The Guest List by Lucy Foley [X]
I really enjoyed this audiobook. A picture perfect high-achieving couple is getting married on a remote Irish island. The bride’s side has complicated family dynamics and everyone is harboring a secret it seems. The groom’s side is comprised of his friends from an intense boarding school they attended as children. Everyone seems happy for the couple, but then something horrifying happens at the wedding. The audiobook was well narrated and I’d love similar recommendations if you have any.

review:
“But it’s all about the moment, a wedding. All about the day. It’s not really about the marriage at all, in spite of what everyone says.”
what the fuck did i just read??? this was so much false advertising?? the blurb made me think that this would be something like and then there were none or glass onion but this was just... a complete snoozefest.
none of the plot twists hit the way the author thought they would. in fact, stephen's is the only plot twist i didn't see coming. everything else, and i mean everything else was insanely predictable. god what a waste.
i was rooting for this book so hard because i desperately wanted to read a fun little mystery. alas...
do me a favour, just read a heavy spoiler-y goodreads review or something instead of reading the actual book. you'll save yourself so much time.

Books I read in January
The Guest List — Lucy Foley
Read: 29/12/23 – 02/01/24
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
This was the first book of this genre I have read, I went into it basically blind only really knowing the what the description on the storygraph gave me but I had heard great things about this author due to having previously had The Paris Apartment recommended to me (which is still on my tbr). I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I was invested in the story the whole way through, I found the writing style and multiple points of view interesting, and thought the descriptiveness, especially of the setting of the book, was very well written. My only thing is that the last few chapters and overall ending of the book felt a little rushed and hastily wrapped up.
Content warnings: self-harm, murder, abortion (mentioned), suicide (mentioned), and child death (mentioned)
Love At First Site — Phoebe MacLeod
Read: 02/01 – 05/01
Rating: ☆☆☆
This book was a fun, lighthearted read. The romance of the book felt a little rushed and really only took up a small fraction of the story, whilst the main focus of the story being the main character finding her way post-breakup and having just lost a job that she loved, and the growth she makes as a result. The cast of characters was very likeable. Overall, the book was enjoyable for what it was.
The Reading List — Sara Nisha Adams
Read: 06/01 – 10/01
Rating: ☆☆☆☆¼
I went into this book completely blind having never heard of either the book itself nor the author as it was in my Kindle recommendations and sounded interesting. This was a very lovely and inspiring book about the power of reading and its ability to be both an escape from the struggles of life and also a way of connecting people. This book covers some tough topics, but it's done in a very careful and compassionate way that reinforces the idea that you never have to go through things alone. With adiverse cast of very lovable characters, I would highly recommend this book.
Content warnings: mental illness, suicide (mentioned), grief, cancer (mentioned)
The Folk of the Air Trilogy — Holly Black
Read: 11/01 — 26/01
Rating:
The Cruel Prince: ☆☆☆☆¾
The Wicked King: ☆☆☆☆½
The Queen Of Nothing: ☆☆☆☆¾
This genre is a comfort genre to me; it's the genre of books that got me into reading originally, though I have never read anything by this particular author before. I very much enjoyed the story of this trilogy, the twists and turns, and a lot of the characters and the way they were developed. I found myself disappointed when I finished the last book wanting more from this world in which the characters lived. I need to try to get back into more fantasy books because I thoroughly enjoyed this series.
Content warning: murder, violence, bullying, very mild sexual content
Never Ever Getting Back Together — Phoebe MacLeod
Read: 27/01 – 28/01
Rating: ☆☆☆½
Again, this was another fun, lighthearted book. The romance was a lot more of the main focus of this book than the last Phoebe MacLeod book I read, and I must say I did enjoy this one a little more. A true rom-com story!
The Cheat Sheet — Sarah Adams
Rating: ☆☆¾
I have read almost all of Sarah Adams books and always really enjoy the lighthearted, cute stories, which this book was no different. This is, however, the first book I've ever listened to as an audiobook, I really enjoyed the dual point of views (and the different voice actors for the audiobook version) and that you could get an insight to what both of the main characters were thinking. There wasn't a lot of depth to this book, and it was very character driven rather than plot driven, but it was a fun little listen for me and kept me entertained throughout.
Content warnings: panic attacks

July 2023 Wrap Up
July was a great month. We had a wonderful weeklong vacation in Gloucester, MA with my in-laws, celebrated the two year anniversary of adopting our cats, and got to spend plenty of time with friends. I certainly can't complain about my summer so far!
Books Read: 15
Look at me go! My favorite new read was The Travelling Cat Chronicles, which is now my favorite book of the year. I also learned upon rereading Mansfield Park that I actually really like it. And of course I had a great time rereading my ultimate comfort books: the All for the Game series. My least favorite was Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law, which I found completely disappointing. I like Rich's prose works a lot, but her poetry doesn't agree with me. Books marked with ® are rereads.
The Autobiography of Margaret Oliphant by Margaret Oliphant - 3.5 stars
Under Two Flags by Ouida - 3.5
Book of Longing by Leonard Cohen - 4 stars
Blush: Faces of Shame by Elspeth Probyn - 3 stars
Thief Liar Lady by D. L. Soria - 5 stars
Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law: Poems 1954-1962 by Adrienne Rich - 2 stars
Cujo by Stephen King - 5 stars
The Shadow in the Glass by JJA Harwood - 4 stars
Mansfield Park by Jane Austen - 5 stars ®
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa - 5 stars
A Memoir of Jane Austen and Other Family Recollections by James Edward Austen-Leigh, edited by Kathryn Sutherland - 4 stars
The Guest List by Lucy Foley - 4 stars
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic - 5 stars ®
The Raven King by Nora Sakavic - 5 stars ®
The King's Men by Nora Sakavic - 5 stars ®
On Tumblr:
Look, I have things here! I've started posting book photos again, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. There are also some lovely pictures of the cats taken at the kennel where they boarded during our vacation. I highly recommend checking them out because my boys are adorable (and clearly I'm not biased at all).

161 by The Guest List
Date: October 9, 2024
Dear Song,
I still remember when I first listened to that song—“161” by The Guest List. It was a rainy afternoon, and I had just returned home after a long day. The sound of raindrops against the window created a perfect backdrop as I settled into my favorite chair, wrapped in a soft blanket.
As the opening notes filled the room, I was immediately transported. The melody had a warmth that felt familiar, almost like a hug. I closed my eyes and let the lyrics wash over me. Each line resonated deeply, evoking memories of late-night conversations with friends, laughter echoing through dimly lit rooms, and moments that felt both fleeting and eternal.
I could picture the faces of those I’ve shared my life with—each smile, each story woven into the fabric of my own experiences. The song became a soundtrack to my nostalgia, reminding me of connections that have shaped me, even when distance pulled us apart.
By the time the final notes faded, I was left in a contemplative silence, filled with gratitude for the memories and the people who made them special. That day marked the beginning of a deep appreciation for the song, a piece of art that captures the essence of longing and connection in a way that feels timeless.
See you, next time.
