Stupid Questions

You’ve always been enamored with Ivlis, a sort of unexplained attraction that always leads you to him despite how much pain it causes you in the end.

You knew it in theory, at the moment of his 200th birthday when he managed to tear the seam of Sirolas’s coat and you took the blame for him, resulting in a harsh lecturing and a brutal punishment from a highly annoyed God, but you never really truly understood the depths of your devotion to him until the day he was banished.

It was almost terrifying to you, the way you could just cast aside all of your other attachments, your friends, your family, your home, all of it you could discard if only you could stay with him. And so you followed him, descending into those unknown depths of fear and flame, letting go of everything for his sake (and maybe in a way, yours too).

Not that he ever really realized it, or at least, maybe it was something he preferred not to think about. He was busy after all, busy seeking his dreams of power, and maybe in some way an attempt to gain back the love that he had lost from his father. And he was always putting on this act, this arrogant, cruel demeanor, one that no one really believed (except maybe Emalf, but he was always a sort of punching bag) but pretended to for his sake.

You loved him. 

So you did everything you could for him, in that calm, gentle way of yours. Listening to him rant, running errands for him, fighting for him, tucking in Poemi for him, cooking for him, always subtly pampering him… all of those things were like a privilege for you. You didn’t really need his acknowledgment, just being around him was enough to satiate you, and he was quite content to ignore whatever feelings might have been obvious to the both of you. 

At least you both were until that purple eyed devil entered your lives.

It was horrifying how quickly things could change, that once confident gleam in his molten eyes dimmed like cooling lava, something depressed and wounded taking over his being. You could see how he was withering away, and yet, you were unable to do anything as a mere demon, aside from doing what you always had done, with the addition of patching him up the best you could when he returned from that Pitch Black world. 

It’s on one of these days that he speaks to you suddenly, a rare occurrence as you usually worked on him in silence, the delicate air between you two broken with a single word.

“Why?”

You look up from your work wiping away the blood on one of his numerous cuts, taking in his somber expression.

“...why what, Lord Ivlis?”

He lets out a small scoff, looking at the ground before looking back at you.

“You know what I mean. Why? Why bother sticking with me? Why bother to help me, to tend to me? To stay?” He asks, a strong sense of self depreciation in his tone.

A small silence lapses.

“...why did you follow me when I fell?” He asks softly.

There are a lot of things you could say, many things that rush to your mind, but none of them seem quite right. Reassurance won’t help when he’s like this, honeyed words rarely do these days, so you just tell him the truth.

“I don’t take you for a fool, Lord Ivlis.” You say resolutely. “You don’t need me to tell you the reason.”

His brow furrows at this.

“That doesn’t answer why. You have no reason to…” He trails off and looks aside.

“...there’s never really a reason, is there?” You ask rhetorically with a wane smile. “If there was a reason for it, no one would ever feel so hurt. The truth is, I feel at peace here, wherever you go is home.”

You continue speaking as you resume cleaning his wounds. 

“Don’t think I have no say in this. I consider myself a faithful servant to you, and I will follow your orders with utmost urgency and dedication… but if you should ever order me to leave, I’ll betray you without question.”

You finish speaking, before looking up at him with a small smile.

It doesn’t really surprise you, the soft red hue on his cheeks as he looks down at you perplexed, but it certainly does make you feel warm inside.

“...whatever, it was a stupid question anyway.” He says with a scoff.

You just laugh internally at his fluster, picking up the roll of bandages from the nightstand.

It was a stupid question after all.
