Happy Birthday to the real Amyntor: Ed Reames
9/11 is a day of mourning in the US. But for me, 9/11 means my father’s birthday. And with Dancing with the Lion: Rise coming out next month--which is dedicated to my father’s memory--I decided I’d post here the tribute to my father that I wrote shortly after his death in February of 2017. My father (and mother) provided the model for Amyntor in the novel. So if you’d like to meet the “real” Amyntor, here he is.
Tumblr media
Calvin Edward Reames, c. 1944
As some of you are already aware, my father’s health—physical and mental—has been failing, especially since autumn. In late January, he caught pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital. He never regained conscious awareness and was placed on palliative care. At 3:15pm, Eastern time, February 10, 2017, he died, almost exactly 92 years and 5 months since he entered this world.
Social media has become the communication currency of our time, and supposedly nothing on the Internet ever really disappears. Ergo I want to tell you about my father so HE won’t disappear. This is my own reflection.  No one’s life can be understood by any single individual in it. We’re too multifaceted. The father I knew wasn't even the father my brother knew, as we were born almost 18 years apart--he at the beginning of the Baby Boom and me at the tail end. Yet my father raised a writer for a daughter, so I feel the need to eulogize him as I knew him. Others will have other stories, more or less flattering.
Born on the now-infamous date of 9/11, 1924, in Gorham, Jackson County, (Southern) Illinois, he survived the Tri-State Tornado at only 6 months of age. With him in her arms, his mother ran for the railroad tracks and got on the opposite side from the mile-wide monster bearing down on them, then laid her own body over his; the tornado leapt the tracks and spared them. Perhaps that was an omen for a charmed life. On the face of if, his life might not seem particularly charmed, but he survived the Depression, a world war, and mostly made good on the American Dream. He even lived long enough to see his Cubbies win the World Series.
Tumblr media
Iva Mae Gregersen Reames & Daddy, 1925
The eldest of 13 children, he grew up in a family who were poor even by Depression-era standards.  It made him generous, occasionally foolishly so. Yet if he decided someone was “his” (family or friend), he saw it as his obligation to help. That conviction stemmed less from abstract ethics than from an innate kindness arising out of his recall of what it meant to be in need. Sometimes people say, “Well, I managed …” and expect others to suffer as they had.  Daddy could do that, too, but mostly he didn't.  If he could prevent someone from suffering, that made him happy.  He just wanted a “Thank you.” When he was in the war, he sent virtually his whole paycheque home to his mother each month to help care for his younger brothers and sisters. He kept $5.  Yes, $5 went much further then, but as an unmarried corporal in the US army, he made about $65 dollars monthly in 1944.  So he kept 1/13th of his income and gave away the rest.

That, perhaps better than anything, exemplifies his fundamental nature. It’s in our actions and choices that, I believe, we reveal our true selves.
He liked to laugh, and kid, but never cruelly. For some families, a disparaging jest is meant as back-handed affection, but that wasn’t heard in the house in which I grew up. When I was younger, I was frequently teased because I walked right into comments with potential double meanings. Perhaps one of the values of getting old(er) is that I’ve aged out of being an easy target. Yet I never learned to hear what others said as an opportunity for ribbing because my parents didn’t find that sort of thing funny. My father's sense of humor was devoid of sarcasm, as he thought it mean-spirited. Some of that owed to his own mother, who—to hear him talk about her—should have been beatified immediately upon her death. But I also believe it owed to having lived through real struggle himself.
To his mind, the world is mean enough. He saw no need to make it meaner via our interactions with people about whom we should care. It's partly for that reason, and a basic aversion to drama, that he was a much-desired member of the pastor-parish relations committee at our church in Lakeland, Florida. His presence tended to tamp down exaggerated crises and occasional bouts of flailing (which is actually a bit funny, given his own tendency to worry).
My father had a will of iron, and a quiet ambition easily overlooked. For instance, when he decided to stop smoking, back before I was born, he’d just received a new carton of cigarettes for Christmas. He threw them in the trash and quit cold turkey because he’d decided he was done. He took up a pipe later (I think largely for image), but decided he didn’t want to do that, either, and just put down the pipe one day. That was it.
Tumblr media
"The Lineman," Normal Rockwell
When Daddy decided to do something, he did it. “Failure is not an option”: Apollo 13’s motto. Well, the men (and women) who got Apollo 13 home are my father’s generation. When he returned from the war, he was one of millions looking for a job. He tried on several, but finally decided to work for the telephone company because communications seemed like the future. Before the war, he’d wanted to be a pharmacist, yet circumstance had curtailed the college degree required. So he began showing up regularly in the hiring offices of General Telephone Electric (GTE), asking for work. He made himself annoying. But squeaky wheel gets the grease, and finally they sent him north as a telephone lineman … in January … during a blizzard. He was a relatively little guy (wiry, but short), and they doubted he’d last 2 days. They figured it was a good way to get rid of his terrier persistence.
Tumblr media
Daddy on right, GTE employee award
He persisted for 40+ years, and retired as a (self-taught) senior engineer in the mid-1980s. Never tell a Reames, "You can’t do that."
The guys who’d worked under him at the end liked him so much, they kept coming to visit him for years after. He had that effect on people, whether at work, at church, or as a ham radio operator ("This is K9RWP calling..."). They sensed he truly cared about them, and responded in kind. He wasn’t a boisterous or especially outgoing person, but he was still an extrovert. He’d strike up conversations with random strangers in lines at store check-outs.
Especially if there was a baby involved.
Tumblr media
Daddy & his great-granddaughter, Leila
See, Daddy loved babies.  And babies loved Daddy. Maybe as a result of being the eldest of 13, but he could burp them, change a diaper pronto, or make them laugh. He so enjoyed watching little kids, especially as he aged; he’d break into a grin just to see them playing at a distance. He was never among the “Children should be seen and not heard” crowd. To his mind, children should be talked to and played with. They would inherit the earth. When my son was born just a few months after my mother's death, Daddy said, “He’s my little replacement.” At the time, I worried his words were fatalistic. But he went on to survive my mother by almost 20 years, and now, I see his words as an expression of continuity. We are our ancestors.
Tumblr media
Daddy, Grandson Ian & Licorice as a kitten
So my son, Ian, is his replacement, in the larger sense. When we look forward, we also look back to where we came from. I tried to insure that Ian got to know his Grandpa, who was there just days after he came home from the hospital after birth, and was there when he graduated from high school, even paid his first bill for books at college. Because that’s who Daddy was. If he didn’t get to attend college himself, he made sure both his kids did, and his grandkids. For him, that was an achievement.
As I said…the success of others, especially friends and family, seemed to Daddy the same as his own.
Yet his generosity and empathy extended beyond just people. Daddy was a cat magnet. We used to joke that if he sat down and there was a cat within 50 feet, pretty soon, that cat would be on his lap. He liked dogs, to be sure, but dogs (and horses) were my mother’s favorites. Daddy liked cats, and they liked him. Dogs are forgiving. They’ll stay with even an abusive owner; but cats leave. They don’t put up with crap. Daddy? Even semi-feral cats trusted him.
Tumblr media
Daddy, me, Ian, and a completely random barn cat who decided to adopt him for the day at my aunt’s farm
So while he was raised in a time when animals were tools and food more than family members, and he certainly went hunting from a young age to help put food on the table, I think he, more than my mother, had a soft spot for animals. I remember in the ‘70s, he decided we were going to raise rabbits for food, and bought a pair of does. Well, it didn’t take long for yours truly to make pets not only of the does, but of the first litter of babies. All of them had to go to homes where they’d be pets, not dinner. And while I’d made the pronouncement, it didn’t take much to convince my father. Shooting a wild squirrel for the stew pot (especially when hungry) was one thing; killing the rabbits one fed regularly and took care of was another. So our venture in home-grown meat failed miserably (to, I’m sure, the rabbits’ collective relief). Yet it wasn’t just due to my agitating. I don’t think Daddy could have killed a one of them, even if I hadn’t protested. They had names, after all.
He wasn’t a saint. None of us are. The cliche applies: we're a mix of vices and virtues, like shadows against the backlight of the sun. Age softened some of his, while exacerbating others due to a failing filter. Among other things he did well, Daddy was a champion worrier. He worried about anything you can imagine (and then some). Perhaps that owed to growing up in such an unstable era as the Depression when it seemed anything could happen, but for instance, he would remind me constantly to hold onto handrails while going up and down stairs. It seems trivial, but he genuinely angsted over me falling at home and hurting myself when nobody might find me for days. So I (mostly) hold onto rails, because I hear his voice in my head, telling me to.
The irony, of course, is that he was in much more danger of falling, yet he didn't tend to worry about himself. Before he moved up to be near my brother, I tried to get him to buy one of those Life Alert systems. I even employed the ultimate weapon: his grandson (Ian), to beg.  He refused. He’d be fine, because he’s of that generation when all a man should need was himself, a gun, a good job, and a driver's license. And oh, boy, getting him to relinquish that driver's license as he went increasingly blind from macular degeneration was quite the battle, one my poor brother largely had to face when Daddy moved north to Kentucky in his last years. Daddy never did let go of the worrying, though.
He could be impatient, and critical, too, sometimes overly so. I never wanted to sing in front of him because he, like many of his siblings, had an excellent ear and I was, well, usually a little flat. He could hear it, and would say so. But the one he was most critical of was himself, if he failed to live up to his (very high) standards of what he thought he ought to do. Some of that, I lay at the feet of his own father, at least as my mother told it to me. Yet in contrast, as noted earlier, he delighted in the success of others. As a child and young woman I wanted to succeed not because I feared his critique (except about my singing), but because I basked in his happiness when I did well. He could be downright embarrassing in his bragging. If failure, especially his, was not an option, he didn't feel the need to build himself up by tearing down others. He was happy to share the spotlight, or even to applaud from the sidelines--and mean it. Again, maybe that owed to being one of 13, but I think it went deeper, back to his fundamental worldview: “You and me,” not, “Me or you.” He was quietly ambitious, but not especially competitive. Except at cards. Then all bets were off (sometimes literally).
Tumblr media
Daddy with Mama, Christmas, c. 1990
One of his most outstanding virtues was his loyalty. For instance, he fell in love with my mother and stayed married to her for 51 years, then never remarried. While it might have been nice for him to remarry, I don't think it was in him; it would have felt like "replacing" her, and to his mind, she had no replacement.
After her death in 1997, I recall going through old pictures of her with him, one from just after the war, which showed them out with friends. Keep in mind that my mother, from childhood until after the birth of my brother, was…pudgy. While on the shorter side, my father was never heavy in his youth. In fact, he got quite buff during WWII: broad-chested and slim-waisted. But as we looked at that picture of my mother next to her friends, he pointed to her with tears in his eyes, and said, "She was the most beautiful of them all." Yup, the "pudgy" girl.
Tumblr media
Idalee Brouillette, c. 1944, the picture my father carried during WWII
But he was right: Mama was a stunner. I know that, now, people say I look a lot like her, and I’m honored it’s so. But I was never as pretty as she was, especially in her youth, and I think my father felt bedazzled that this beautiful, black-haired Brouillette girl decided she was going to marry him, and that was the end of it. Her family was better off financially during the Depression, even with Indian blood; they had a farm with a full section, and a car, and enough money for my grandfather to send my mother and her sisters into town to go to school when he thought the teacher at the school on Buttermilk Hill was unqualified. So I suppose you could say Daddy "married up." But to Mama’s mind, she’d won the deal, getting the determined, smart guy.
See, long before they met in person, Mama had gone with her best friend Annie to Gorham High School for a day, visiting. In math class, the teacher put a problem on the board and asked the class to solve it. Only one student could: my father. He got up and wrote the solution on the blackboard, and Mama was enchanted. She asked Annie, “Who is that guy!?”
Some years later, she married that guy.

In many ways, my parents were quite different people. My mother was progressive in thought beyond her time, naturally empathic and perceptive, a bookworm introvert with a steel spine when she needed it and the amazing ability to keep 5+ people’s business in her head without forgetting anything. Everything I know about organization (and I’m pretty good at it), I learned from my mother. My father was conservative, protective, supportive, more intelligent (in sheer IQ), but less emotionally intelligent (EQ), more driven, but less philosophical. Yet they created a unique alchemy of spirit. They didn’t share common interests—Mama loved reading novels, Daddy never read fiction, Mama loved watching murder mysteries, Daddy preferred ball games or the news. Yet they looked out on the world in the same direction, and that’s what mattered.

In the end, what can I say but that Daddy was the epitome of the Greatest Generation. And now he’s gone. I won’t say we’ll never see their like again, because nobody knows the future. They weren’t perfect—racism was an institutionalized assumption enshrined in segregation, women barely had the vote, LGBTQ wasn’t even talked about—but we, in our current America, could take a page from those who survived abject poverty and economic collapse without government safety nets, then went on to save the world from fascism. They did it not by grand deeds, but by the simple heroism of young men and a few women storming a beach at Normandy or Iwo Jima, a lot of whom never came home. Daddy used to joke that he chased Hitler all over Europe but never caught him.
Daddy, you did catch him. You were part of the men and women who stopped him.
You are my hero.  You are the real Captain America.
I’m privileged and grateful to be your daughter, and I love you, forever.

Get to know me uncomfortably well!
I was tagged by my sis @donaldpiercesbae . Thanks, my dear. I loved your answers!!
1. What’s your middle name?
It rhymes with ‘bae’.
2. How old are you?
Older than a lot of folks around here, I reckon. (Mid-thirties.)

January the 26th
4. What’s your zodiac sign?
Aquarius. I’m stubborn, rebellious, and quirky.

Clover green.
6. What’s your lucky number?
I don’t have one- I’ve never been superstitious in that capacity.
7. Do you have any pets?
I have a cat who’s a bit of an asshole named Oliver, who I love to pieces. And three days from now, I’ll be picking up a puppy. It’ll be almost six months to the day I suddenly lost my Milo.
8. Where are you from?
The United States of Dysfunction
9. How tall are you?
5’6” / 1.68 m
10. What shoe size are you?

Uh… it’s more than two dozen, but less than three dozen, I think.
12. What was your last dream about?
I don’t remember my dreams, unfortunately.

Not in the slightest and I am totally okay with that.
15. Favourite song?
None of Your Business by Salt N Pepa, Alone Together by Fall Out Boy, Broken by Lifehouse, Creep by Clint Mansell/Eliot Sumner

I can’t think of just one at the moment; but if it’s got Batman (or his friends/family) in it, it’s safe to say it’s on my list.
17. Who would be your ideal partner?
Someone I’m comfortable sharing my nerdy hobbies with, who can communicate, and who isn’t content with life as-is. (That means he wants to explore, try new things, strives to be a better person than he was yesterday, etc) To be cheesy, I want a partner in crime.
18. Do you want children?
Yes, but being 35 and having been single for 5+ years, I’m scared I’m running out of time.
19. Do you want a church wedding?
As someone who’s been married (and sadly, is divorced), I’ll be the first to tell you the venue isn’t nearly as important as people like to make you think it is. If I do it again, I’ll probably not do so in a church.

Tumblr media
I can't believe I reached 3k followers!!! Thank you all so much!! When I started this blog, I hoped to reach 100 followers one day, and now here we are!
So to thank you all and mark the date, I'm making a little event! The theme is simple : movies!
What is it all about?
Under the cut are a list of prompts and scenes from different movies. You can choose between two different things that you would like me to write:
-        You can choose between 1 and 5 prompts along with a character and I will write a one-shot based on these prompts for the character you have chosen
-        You can choose one scene in the list and a character, and I will re-write that scene for the character you have chosen
A few rules to follow if you want to send a request.
-        If you request for the prompts :
- You can request up to 5 prompts, not more
- You can add a few details that you would like to be featured in your request if you have precise ideas
 -        If you request a scene :
- I will write a one-shot that is inspired by that scene, not the exact same scene (obviously, otherwise, where is the fun?). The idea is to get the same spirit and some references, or the same situation, but not a simple copy.
- These scenes will require me to turn AU!, so don't be surprised.
- You can request only one scene, so choose wisely ;)
- I will most likely 'erase'  the characters who were in the original scenes, so don't be surprised.
No matter if you request for prompts or for a scene :
- You can request for any character on my masterlist, no matter if I've already written for them or not.
- I have no trouble with anons, if you're a little shy. So don't hesitate to send a request on anon if you feel more comfortable this way.
- Please, send me your request through my askbox and not in a PM. It's much easier for me to manage, and I might forget about your request if you send it to me privately. If you're shy, send an ask on anon.
- Sadly, I will probably not be able to write all the requests that are sent my way. I will write as many as I can, but I'm only human. I'm sorry if I don't get to write your request. But I invite you to send it anyway, because I might write your request! If you don't send it, then you can be sure that I won't though. Again, I'm sorry if I can't write all the requests I receive, but I usually get too many to be able to write them all.
Requests for this event will be up for one week, which means until January 14!
Considering how well this event works, I may change that date along the way.
Thank you all again and I hope you like this event :D

How to Age Gracefully, According to 8 Women Over 40
Tumblr media
How to Age Gracefully, According to 8 Women Over 40 PHOTO: @FABNFITBYCARLA, @PLATINUMPUNK, @SILVERGIRLMX I don't know who needs to hear this, but the youth obsession is played out. As a beauty editor with access to the best everything, I'm certainly tempted to reach for the serums and skin treatments that promise to keep me looking younger, longer. But when I really stop to think about it, the constant messaging that younger is better is damaging, problematic, and simply not true. I call bullshit! Of course, youth has its perks (at 31, I'm now officially a member of the "My Knees Crack When I Sit Down" club), but with every passing year, I become acutely more aware that with age comes wisdom, grace, and a special brand of beauty that you can only earn by living long enough to show a few fine lines and wrinkles. I'm tired of people being shocked when women over 40 are considered among the most gorgeous. Some of the most beautiful humans I know are in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. (My 62-year-old mom and 90-year-old grandma being two of them!) In fact, my Instagram feed is stacked with ladies in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who make achieving those precious years look so insanely good. I decided to slide into some of those ladies' DMs to get their raw, unfiltered thoughts on aging, how they take care of themselves, and what they do to stay feeling their best. And, hey, if glowy skin and shiny hair happen to come along with it, then so be it! Age is just a number, and these eight ladies are proof of that. Ahead, check out the tips and products helping these gorgeous women age gracefully. Norma Alcala, 69, Retired, Mother, Grandmother, and Dog Mom PHOTO: @PLATINUMPUNK Words of wisdom: "I don't believe that you have to do/not do, wear/not wear certain things at certain ages. I think each of us has the right to design our lives according to our individual preferences, including our body and spirit without trying to adhere to parameters established by culture throughout time. If you find a benefit for yourself (physical or mental) you should feel free to try, experiment, invent, and modify. Have fun!" Norma's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Perricone MD Finishing & Firming Moisturizer ($69) "I love skincare products because they protect your skin." SHOP Favorite Sabon NYC Lavender Apple Shower Oil ($32) "I try many different ones, but this is one of my all-time favorites." SHOP Favorite Odacité All-Embracing Serum Watermelon + Hibiscus Crystal Infused Hydration ($98) "I also try to work out and eat healthy. I drink green juice every day! Most importantly, I try to avoid stress as much as possible." Follow Norma on Instagram. Eugenia Russell Hargrove, 65, Senior Pharmaceutical Sales Specialist PHOTO: @THEEAGEOFGRACE Words of wisdom: "My mother and grandmother taught me at an early age, the importance of a regular and consistent skincare regiment. However, I strayed away from self-care as a mom focusing on my children. So I would tell my younger self not to neglect my skincare routine and to go to the dermatologist earlier, in my 30s, instead of 40s once I had adult acne." Eugenia's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Pholk Beauty Daily Detox Face Wash ($20) "Its natural ingredients are cleasining without irritating my oily, blemished prone skin." SHOP Favorite Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen ($35) "Rihanna did a very good thing with this product. It's a light, must-have moisturizer that sinks in and won't pill if I apply makeup after. " SHOP Favorite Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'R Mattifying Primer ($32) "Not that I'm wearing makeup regularly anymore (maskne is real!), but when I did, I often reached for this primer because it's light but packs a punch to fight to shine all-day." SHOP Favorite Black Girl Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($16) "During quarantine, I've been enjoying my patio a bit more, which calls for broad-spectrum SPF. This one is fragrance-free and doesn't make my face ashy. A win-win." Follow Eugenia on Instagram. Lynn Shabinsky, 58, Yoga Teacher, Lifestyle Model PHOTO: @WHITEHAIRWISDOM Words of wisdom: "Every body is different in size, shape, and color. When you find beauty from within, the confidence will radiate out of you. Let go of the need to compare and let your true light shine." Lynn's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Be Well Clean Skincare Graceful Aging Face Kit ($180) "My yoga practice helps me find the balance of strength and ease that I carry throughout my day and my skincare rituals allow me to nourish my skin, creating a radiant glow. Be Well Skincare's Graceful Aging Kit is my favorite nighttime ritual. I love the Avocado Sea Moss Exfoliant and finish with a gentle facial massage with the lavender face cream. Not only do these products leave my skin feeling smooth, but the lavender massage creates the perfect ritual for winding down at the end of the day." SHOP Favorite Tata Harper Illuminating Eye Cream ($115) "This is my favorite eye cream. It works on fine lines and wrinkles while creating an illuminating effect, which distracts from any dark circles." SHOP Favorite Ilia Multi-Stick Cheek & Lip ($34) "I have fallen in love with Ilia Beauty. Their clean makeup makes me feel absolutely radiant on all levels, giving me the confidence to feel truly comfortable in my own skin." Follow Lynn on Instagram. Carla Kemp, 57, Model, Personal Assistant PHOTO: @FABNFITBYCARLA Words of wisdom: "I don't subscribe to the notion that grey hair makes you look older. If your hair is healthy, styled and you exude confidence, people will admire your hair. Having grey hair is on an upswing. Sometimes dying grey hair can make you look older thus defeating the purpose. I think it's beautiful and super sexy!" Carla's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Visit the Maison 276 Store Maison 276 No. 8 Botaniques Dry Oil ($40) "I absolutely love Maison 286 No. 8 Botaniques Rosehip Seed Oil. I use it on my face, body, and hair! The fatty acids and antioxidants in rosehip help reduce fine lines and regenerate my skin. The oils are easily absorbed, leaving my skin with a velvety smooth finish and gorgeous glow." SHOP Favorite SWL Collection Sweetheart Lip Gloss Collection ($47) "Most days, I like a soft and natural look on my lips. These give my lips a glossy luster with just enough color.  Three come in this collection and I adore each one!" SHOP Favorite D'Lashes Luxury Lashes Lash Essentials Kit ($25) "Sometimes, mascara just isn't enough, and I'm not a big fan of crazy-long lash extensions. The D'Lashes lash kit has been perfect! It has everything I need to enhance my natural eyes. It comes with three different strip lashes, tweezers, and an adhesive eyeliner pen." Follow Carla on Instagram. Caroline Labouchere, 56, Model PHOTO: @CAROLINELABOUCHERE Words of wisdom: "Visit a good consultant dermatologist to get a simple, effective lifelong skincare routine. Don't waste money on products that aren't going to work long term and don't put your face in the sun! Learn to listen to your body so that you know when something is not right." Caroline's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Avéne Eau Thermale Avene Cold Cream ($20) "This is my daily moisturizer, and although the texture took some getting used to, it's better than the alternative, Vaseline, for me. It can be used on top of your retinoid at night time, too." SHOP Favorite Blinq I-Lash Lash and Brow Serum ($40) "I have used this for a long time now and cannot imagine not using it. I get many compliments on my brows and lashes. I love them." SHOP Favorite Desavery Dream Oil Cleanser ($50) "This has the perfect relaxing, clean smell for the end of the day." Follow Caroline on Instagram. Sandrine Picard, 53, Teacher PHOTO: @GREY_SO_WHAT Words of wisdom: "Do what you want because whatever you do, people will criticize anyway. So keep doing what you like doing, wear what you like wearing, and show people how wrong they are!" Sandrine's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Filorga Scrub & Mask ($59) "I think it is important to keep a few hours to yourself during the weekend just to take care of your skin, face, and body. It's so relaxing to love yourself for a while. First I'll do the Filorga scrub which is a foam exfoliator. I love the texture, the smell, and my skin is just, like, renewed when I use it once a week on Sundays." SHOP Favorite Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Express Eye Mask ( $80) $68 "These are the best eye patches to look fully awake before photoshoots." SHOP Favorite White Hot Brilliant Shampoo ($21) "The British hair company White Hot keeps my grey hair bright and luminous. I use this once or twice a week." Follow Sandrine on Instagram. Carla Martin, 48, Model, Silver Hair Ambassador PHOTO: @SILVERGIRLMX Words of wisdom: "Enjoy everything, be yourself, embrace your uniqueness and stand out. Care less of what others think about the things that make you happy. Also, use a moisturizer every day and protect your skin from the sun. A tan looks great for a couple of days, but it can damage your skin in the long run." Carla's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser ($18) "I love a face massage. I do it by myself twice a week, sometimes with my hands and others with face cupping or face rollers. I use rose-hip oil, and it only takes five to 10 minutes. I've noticed that it makes my skin glow afterward. But first, I clean my face with Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. It has a great smell and it leaves my face feeling clean without drying it." SHOP Favorite Pai Organic Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil ($44) "Rose-hip oil is light and I love the smell." SHOP Favorite Glossier Priming Moisturizer Balance ($25) "The Glossier Priming moisturizer has a soft smell, it feels lavish, and makes my skin feel soft and moisturized." Follow Carla on Instagram. Trina Albus, 45, Founder of Magenta Agency, 40+ Skincare Creator PHOTO: @TRINAALBUS Words of wisdom: "I don't believe in preventative Botox. My YouTube channel features alternatives to Botox and filler, including skincare and beauty devices like microcurrent and radiofrequency. I don't hate on injectables—I just don't think they should be the first thing you try. So many younger people are getting injectables, and I want everyone to know there are other options! I don't agree that when you reach a certain age or see your first fine line that you need to get injectables. There are so many other things you can do to rejuvenate your skin." Trina's Go-To Products SHOP Favorite CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask ($319) "I like the Current Body LED mask because it's a flexible silicone wrap around mask that is very comfortable and easy to use. In just 10 minutes per session, you get the benefits of anti-aging red and near infra-red light therapy that improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin tone, texture, and firms the skin. I've had my eye on other LED masks that offer more light settings, including the Best Life Company mask and the Arduro mask. In addition to red, these masks offer up to 6 other colors that fight specific aging concerns. There are also LED neck masks that I haven't tried yet!" SHOP Favorite Newa Skin Tightening System ($249) "I've just started using the Newa RF device. Radiofrequency uses heat to penetrate into the deeper layers of your skin to boost collagen, tighten your face and neck, and reduce wrinkles." SHOP Favorite 7e Wellness Myolift Mini Microcurrent Machine ($269) "While there are many wonderful microcurrent devices available, my absolute favorite is the Myolift Mini. This device includes two modes: Erase to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and educate to lift and firm muscles in your face and neck. The Myolift Mini offers a more targeted treatment, and you can reduce to a frequency of one to two times per month after the initial 60-day period. This means I have more free time to test other devices." SHOP Favorite Nira Skincare Laser ($399) "I just received the Nira laser, which I will use for just two minutes per day to tighten my eye area (hopefully lifting up my hooded eyes) and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. I can't wait to get started with this as I've seen impressive results on social media so far. I've read that you can use the device for other areas, like your smile lines, so I'll be looking into all the available options. I am fortunate to have working relationships with many device manufacturers so I can always reach out to ask questions that help me and my community get the most out of our devices." beauty tips: beauty tips : beauty tips : beauty tips: beauty tips: beauty tips : Read the full article

When I Grow Up I Want To Be Like Betty White
There is a wonderful TED Talk by Jane Fonda in which she talks about life’s Third Act in which she, at the age of 80, is now in the midst of (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHyR7p6_hn0). I am in the middle of my Second Act and some of the things that Fonda talks about do resonate with me particularly about the growth of the human spirit as we ascend the staircase of life and how the Third Act can, for women, be a time to blossom. Culturally, we are expected to spend our first 30 years figuring ourselves out and carving a place in the world and if you snooze you lose (this is how people end up stuck in a rut, in a job or career that they hate). As a teenager and then young adult I did what I felt what I was supposed to do and was heavily influenced by the opinions of others. At age 30 I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with myself (or didn’t dare to dream that I could do what I wanted to do!) and by age 40 I did know what I wanted to do with myself but still listened to negative self-talk and outside opinions. At this time I sort of gave up and resigned myself to second best. I remember watching Doctor Who on TV and thinking how I would never again have the chance to be part of the magic of the action on the screen for any TV show or film. What a depressing time!
Why is this? I am sure I haven’t been the only one that has felt this and I blame our society which attempts to dictate how our lives should arc (Fonda describes this in her TED Talk) - simply put we are born, then we go to school, than post-secondary education, then a career, marriage, mortgage, family, empty nest, retirement and death. I feel that in your 20s and 30s it’s almost drilled into us that we should be saving and working towards retirement at age 65 and to establish that career and make sensible decisons and sacrifice in order to do so. Yawn! Our culture idolizes youth and for those of us late bloomers (particularly women, who do end up being caregivers for a good portion of their lives) it is a struggle to make some big changes or start something new, almost frowned upon.
But where is it written in stone that one cannot completely change their lives at any point that they feel ready? Why is it deemed to be a downward spiral towards death from about age 40 onwards?
For me, after an 18 month break, I got my acting mojo back. Looking back I see it as more of a time period when I was getting other parts of my life in order, but at the time if felt like that part of my life was over.
In many ways, things are only just beginning. If life is a two act play, I am at the end of the first act, perhaps just beginning the second.
At lot of my inspiration is garnered from older actors like Fonda. Just look at Betty White for example. Age 96 and still working well into her Third Act (and not because she has too). That’s what I want and will strive to have. (Fingers crossed I have my grandmother’s genes!)
The wonderful thing about being in community theatre is that I am surrounded by people who are on similar paths. I’ve met so many people that have come to the craft later in life (or perhaps returned to it), later than me (my journey began at around age 26), and that’s always awesome to see. Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives and The West Wing) started her acting journey in community theatre at the age of 42, proof that there is no such thing as being too old to start something new. Joosten is proof that you can find your purpose later in life and become successful at it.
We see this all the time with people that start fitness in their 40s and 50s and go on to run marathons and become champion body builders in their Third Act. Harriette Thompson was 92 when she finished the San Diego Rock ‘n Roll Marathon and there are many other examples. Horse riding is one of my chosen fitness activities and I love how many equestrian athletes are competing into their 60s. Even at the age of 92, the Queen celebrated the birth of a great grandchild by a riding her horse in the grounds of Windsor Castle. I hope that I am still riding horses at that age. Better yet if it is for a film or TV show...
I wrap up this post excited with the thought that I have many more things to strive for, particularly as production week starts for The Space with Liffey Players, in which I play a character who is going through some similar emotions.

The Not So Obvious Reasons Why People Want To Achieve Financial Independence
Tumblr media
The Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement is hot! With a bull market since 2009, many people in America and around the world have gotten wealthy by owning stocks, real estate, and other risk assets.
As a result of our massive increase in wealth during a relatively short period, many people are warming up to the FIRE movement where they retire in their 30s, 40s, or 50s to live the good life supported by their investments.
I define being financially independent as having enough investment income to cover your desired life’s living expenses.
Some people go the Lean FIRE route by living relatively frugally. While others strive to go the Fat FIRE route because of their desire to live it up. Only you can decide whether you’re truly comfortable with your finances.
For us, we’re still about $50,000 a year short in passive income to feel completely independent financially. That’s what happens when you have kids. Therefore, our FIRE journey continues.
Instead of glorifying financial independence and those who are financially independent, let’s have a more difficult conversation. I’m sure some of you find it nauseating to read about some FIRE folk’s fabulous lives.
Not all is sunshine and samurai swords in the land of FIRE. In fact, one could argue that most FIRE folks are maladjusted misfits who’ve never been able to fit in.
The Not So Obvious Reasons People Want To Achieve FIRE
Here are my 10 not so obvious reasons why people want to become financially independent. The truth hurts. But the truth also sets us free.
1) Can’t find the right job. Nobody quits a job they love. But only truly fortunate people can find such jobs. Most of us are not smart enough, talented enough, connected enough, or attractive enough to work at a dream job. Instead, we toil around doing something we dislike simply for the money, aching to escape reality.
2) An easier way out. Instead of grinding for decades at a job we hate, it’s easier to just give up and quit. Why keep on going as a cancer research scientist after not coming remotely close to finding a cure after 15 years? We might even love our jobs, but after working for years with no recognition, eventually the love wears out. Early retirement is like the coward’s solution to not having to try our best anymore.
3) The desire for instant gratification. Instead of putting in our dues to get to the corner office, we want to be the big boss now. The internet and social media have made us expect instant success when we all know that it can sometimes take 10 years and 10,000 hours to make true progress. When we don’t get our way, we quit, rather than acknowledge we lacked patience to reach our goals.
4) An excuse for being unemployed. During the last downturn, a large number of people began to write about location independent lifestyles that enabled one to break free from the 9-5 grind and do what you really want. In reality, we all know that what most of these people actually wanted was a good job and to be accepted by society because they got fired. Saying one is financially independent feels better than saying one is unemployed.
5) An inability to get along with others. When you have a difficult time conforming to the rules and being told what to do, it’s much harder to stay employed, let alone be happily employed. FIRE seekers tend not to be very good at collaboration. Most are introverts and very awkward socially. Those with excellent social skills derive energy from being a part of a group. The desire for independence simply isn’t top of mind.
6) Realization that time is precious. With the median lifespan hovering around 80 years old, you only have 15 years of retirement to enjoy your life if you retire at 65. People in this camp have a heightened awareness of time and therefore do everything possible to make sure they are financially stable sooner, rather than later. Nobody wants to the climb the steps of Santorini on a bum knee.
7) Tired of making other people richer. As the wealth gap continues to widen, more people are realizing their time spent in the office is making someone else rich, not so much themselves. It’s not very motivating to hear the CEO makes 1,000X more than the average employee’s wage.
8) Declining physical and mental health. Roughy one billion people in the world, or 15%, have some sort of disability. For some, their disability will get worse over time. As a result, more people are feeling the necessity to live their best lives now.
9) Young children. It’s bad enough if you already dislike your job. Life gets even worse if you have to leave the people you care about the most and must pay strangers to care for your kids so you can work at a place you despise. The desire to FIRE before kids is extremely selfish in comparison. Parental guilt grows internally, especially when you observe some households with a stay at home parent.
10) FIRE FOMO. The more people who have achieved FIRE and write about FIRE, the more people will become aware of this alternative lifestyle. Big media coverage about FIRE has also increased tremendously since Financial Samurai started talking about achieving financial independence sooner, rather than later in 2009. What was once thought possible only for the very rich now seems possible for any working soldier with the right financial framework and mindset.
The Risks Of FIRE
Now that we’ve discussed some of the real reasons why people want to achieve financial independence ASAP, here are some risks of FIRE once you get there.
1) You may look foolish if you change your mind. Imagine retiring at 40 after 18 years of work after college. You spend the next five years traveling the world, living a leisure lifestyle and experiencing new things. At age 45, you suddenly realize the reason why travel and play are so fun is because of work. You want to get back into the game, but who’s going to risk hiring a 45-year-old with a five-year employment gap? The employer logically chooses to hire someone who’s been continuously working.
2) You run out of money. No matter how conservative we are planning for our retirement needs, something unforeseen may happen. Maybe you have a medical disaster, or your house blows down. Maybe your investments tank due to a massive recession. Although I believe the risk of running out of money during FIRE is overblown, there is still the possibility of a negative sequence of events.
3) Friends and family fade away. It’s nice to have all the time in the world to do whatever you want. But, if your friends and loved ones are busy working all day, they can’t join you on your midday hike or adventure to Tahiti. They may also have a family to tend to during the evenings and on weekends. If you’ve ever taken a staycation by yourself, you’ll soon realize how lonely it is when others are busy leading their own lives.
4) It may be difficult to support a family. Unless you have a tremendous amount of after-tax retirement savings, raising children may be too expensive an endeavor to undertake as an early retiree. Loss of day job income plus the additional expense of child raising might simply be too much to bear. Parents regularly underestimate how much they want to provide the best for their kids.
5) You lose your own self-respect and the respect of others. Unless you’re out there saving the world, you might start getting depressed because you’re contributing very little to society. Others may stop respecting you because you may not be doing anything productive either. Traveling the world and writing about how great your life is on social media isn’t helping anybody.
Final Idiosyncrasy Of FIRE
As I strive to fulfill my goal of FIREing a second time around, I’ve come to the realization I’ve been constantly chasing a moving financial target.
In 2012 at age 34, my goal was to achieve $100,000 in retirement income within three years post work. After my wife left her job in 2015, I increased our retirement income goal to $200,000. Then, after our son was born in 2017, our retirement income goal jumped to $300,000.
Does this mean if we are blessed with a second child, our retirement income target would now jump to $400,000? If so, I’m never going to be able to relax and smell the roses because generating $400,000 in non-401(k) income is a Herculean task.
But I can’t even pick up my boy without feeling soreness in my back! Oh no.
This desire to build an ever greater financial buffer in FIRE is one of the biggest inconsistencies I’ve experienced since leaving corporate America.
Wanting more must be part of the human condition. Or perhaps I’m simply too afraid to let my family down.
Until I’m completely satisfied with my finances, I can’t claim to be financially independent. Let the grind continue!
Readers, what is your definition of financial independence? Have you noticed your retirement income goals have changed over the years? If so, how come? What are some other not so obvious reasons why people want to achieve financial independence?
