I think I need to go work with kids for a while. Pick up a couple of shifts. I keep having dreams where I gently guide young children through life and teach them life lessons.
#sure working for a longer period of time is more rewarding because you actually get to know the kids#they get comfortable with you and you'll get all the cuddles and hugs you could ever ask for#they're so GRABBY cry cry cry#i love kids so much#and that blessed moment where all the 20 other kids are playing and having fun on their own#and you get to spend a good 20 mins just having a long chat with your fave kid#when you read them a story and you see in the face of that One Kid you just can't get through to that this story is AWAKENING something#in them. you're making a connection with them through a story#there was this one little girl i still feel bad about#it was absolutely impossible to get through to her. she was cold#rebuffed any emotional connection and relished in negative attention#it wasn't proven as long as i was working there but apparently her dad was beating her mom and siblings and probably her#i felt sorry for her but it was REALLY hard not to hate her because she was SO difficult and intentionally cruel to both other kids and me#& other adults#BUT she loved this one story i read for them. i was reading it for weeks - it was probably a little advanced for them even#you could see her actually getting interested and connecting with this story - something you NEVER saw otherwise#i was always super excited to read this story and i'd place her as close to me as possible during story hour so she could hear#the gd book ended ON A CLIFFHANGER#after it ended i asked the kids questions about how they felt about it#'was it a happy ending or a sad ending?' 'do you think the princess felt happy in the end?'#she got it PERFECTLY#she understood it at an emotional level i wouldn't expect from a kid her age yet along HER out of all people#after story hour ended she came up to me to ask what happened next in the story and that's the most human i ever saw her#i knew there was a continuation so i told her i didn't know but i'd do my best to get the sequel to read#i moved on from that preschool before anyone was able to get the book but i truly genuinely hope she did.#i recommend doing at least a couple of shifts at a daycare or preschool to EVERYONE#you have NO idea what's going on with kids before you do#in the end i didn't work in that business for long but it's left me with so many unforgettable memories#and skills that will be valuable for the rest of my life

What is the worst, most technically inept drama that you secretly love? Tell us of the best badgood drama, the clunkiest dialogue, the most inexplicable casting, the hideously costumed yet most fun dramas, please.
🫥Anonymously yours🫥,
💜Purplehanfu😈💜🍇👾
dear complete stranger (<3),
man i love badgood dramas so much!!! i chose ones that are flatout objectively not good, but i was glued for them all. here's a few that are jumping out
triad princess (taiwan). it ends on a cliffhanger that will never be continued, the relationship building is non-existent, jasper liu basically plays himself yet still acts like he's doing a community service project, but omg it's cute and hit all the right notes for me. fave bonus is that one of the gangster henchmen falls in love with the FL's best friend, a shy boy who works at a mart and makes youtube covers
hold on, my lady (chinese). a bandit is offered a choice when she's caught during a heist: be executed or marry this aloof but beautiful but delicate son of the general. she chooses the latter, and hijinks ensue. made on a budget of pocket lint and just wacky, im going to rewatch this today, actually. fave bonus moment: the FL falls dramatically down and the ML breaks both his arms instantly when he tries to catch her
thumping spike & thumping spike 2 (korean). the two are barely related, but both deal with a competitive men's volleyball team! thumping spike 1 is about a washed up competitive female player going to coach a high school team to glory (just dont...think too critically about the age difference, there) and the second is COLLEGE EDITION with a love quadrangle between two identical twins, one of whom is a cheerleader for the team, the ace volleyball player who's too cool for school, and the WILDCARD volleyball player who gets mad when people call him gorilla. the second one is definitely worse than the first one, but neither are bringing home awards. i still watched them both in one sitting.
my heart twinkle twinkle (korean). this show is actually insane and a parade of toxic that i can never, in good conscience, ever rec to anyone. but gd did i watch the whole fucking thing. look at this fucking poster. this fucking poster looks like it was doused by a fake snow machine.
premise: Noble But Poor family has 3 daughters: the eldest, who is the caretaker; the middle who is Aloof and Ambitious; and the youngest who is A Fucking Menace. they are lead by their single father, who owns a fried chicken store
Rich but Dysfunctional family also has 3 children: the eldest, who is the only son and a fucking piece of work, the middle who is school colleagues with the other family's middle daughter and a hot mess who loves Da Club, and the youngest, who is clingy and gets into a ton of fights with the other family's youngest but is otherwise ok. they run AN EVIL FRIED CHICKEN FRANCHISE that is poisoning people through subpar ingredients!!
there's so much that's so wrong with this, im going to bullet point it from another post i made:
the entire premise is that there’s a fried chicken restaurant rivalry between two families but somehow there’s murder and slush funds and this guy who owns a string of fried chicken franchises named after himself (yeah) has direct access to seoul’s police commissioner at any given moment
one of the main actresses was involved in a scandal a little over halfway through production so they just….vanish her character/entire plotline like it never happened
the main male lead is toxic personified. him and li chengyin from goodbye my princess could co-author a dating strategy/forced-marriage-after-you-kill-your-girlfriend’s-head-of-household book because jesus christ. he literally screams that he hates women and he ends the drama (rightfully!!) in fucking prison
the second female lead disappears/creates a new identity and becomes a chicken chef student of the world. shes later in a love triangle between a single dad chicken shop interior designer and another vanilla guy
that's right, one guy’s job is he’s an architect for chicken restaurant interiors i cant
the main male lead leaves the main female lead’s father to die in a chicken-coop-themed arsony and then cha-cha slides into the son-in-law’s role during the father’s funeral and later MARRIES the female lead
the main male lead tells the female lead’s father’s grave that HE WON AND DAD LOST because the male lead is standing and the father’s in the dirt?!
a friend/almost!love interest of the second female lead dies tragically in a chicken delivery motorcycle chase????
it's the worst drama i've ever seen. i watched all of it.
kakafukaka (japanese)
this one is so gd weird and unappealing it somehow circled back around and became off-puttingly charming to me? so the premise is that there's a 20something year old woman whose life has gone to shit and she ends up in a sharehome with the most sexually dysfunctional bunch of people in the world. one of these is her ex, who tells her that she's the only one he can get a boner with (yeah) and asks her to help him get over his impotence in order to write his novel (yeah). if you read the whole show as kind of an exploration into sex without romance/love, it's as not bad, and there's something weirdly endearing about everyone--i really love the second female lead akari in particular. but it's not a good show, not by a long shot (MDL rating? 6.6), and the ship is dysfunctional at the very best. the ost somehow is great though?
youtube
speaking of trash dramas with great OSTs, love in sadness has some of my favorite songs:
youtube
youtube
okay that's enough for now!!!!

I am absolutely F E R A L FOR THE SECOND BOOK NOW. OH MY GOODNESS. This is the first cliffhanger that has shook me this hard, in *such* a long time. I'm so furious and yet I'm in the gd Milo clowncar STILL 🤡 toot toot here I come.
Btw was he in the process of saying what I think he was, at the end there?
THANKS. k love you xoxo😘
He may have been...
Milo shows love through actions. Saying the words I love you has never been really easy for him. Because he is a big believer in not being able to take back what is said. It's always out there. It will always be remembered. So, he was in the process. Whether he finished it before you blacked out? Up to you.
But you will be able to call him on it in book 2.

July Reads
The Coworker by Freida Mcfadden (8/10) The beginning was slow. I'm not going to completely lie, but the book threw me for multiple loops. First off, I thought Natalie, FMC, was a good person, but turns out, she's a bully? Like who would've thunk. But then all her actions showed me that she might've killed Dawn, the other FMC, but like she didn't remember anything. So I was like eh, but bullying in a workplace. What are we-- 5? PLUS, it was painfully obvious that Dawn has autism and it sucked hearing about how people treat her. It was also weird that she had an unhealthy obsession with turtles. Like I get the similarities of how she feels vs turtles behave, but like gd girl this obsession is so weird. Then Natalie kept acting like Dawn's death had no significance so I was like though she doesn't remember, she suddenly did it. Then it turns out Dawn isn't dead. THEN, CALEB, NATALIE'S "BOYFRIEND" KISSED AND MADE LOVE TO DAWN. I was so confused like this honestly bumped the rating up. Jeez. Then Dawn wants to kill herself to get Natalie in jail. Like dude, that's intense. Anyway, the cliffhanger or the "peak" was that Dawn killed a friend of Natalie's from high school that aided in her best friend's suicide. I still don't think that part was realistic, but this book was pretty good.
Not a Peep by MT Addams (8/10) This was a dark bully romance. The first bully romance book I didn't like that much because the FMC was kinda annoying. But this one, I liked it because she was so much more mature. Like she wasn't stupid and didn't try fighting back knowing nothing will change. I didn't expect the MMM attraction/love story, but I liked it. It made sense as how the three guys were so close. Also, the guys were attractive unlike the ifrst one I read. Although, I would lowkey want to continue to read the other one. And it was HOT. Love it, but at the end, although it was a HFN, I didn't feel led on. The second book feels like a second story and not a continuation. I enjoyed this book more because for some odd reason, I was able to differentiate fantasy/fiction from reality, and when I did that, it made me enjoy the book more. So I'm glad I liked this book sm. I feel bad that I won't be indulging in the second book, but it is what it is. At least they all got engaged at the end.
Scoring the Player by Rebecca Jenshak (8/10) This book was cute and in my personal opinion, non-toxic. I love Rebecca Jenshak's books, and I love the fact that Dahlia is such a non-toxic, mellow girl. I didn't relate to her bc she was a golf girlie, but the fact that this is her first relationship and she doesn't know what to do but isn't freaking out or overthinking makes me want to hug her. Felix is such a sweetie for "taking Dahlia under his wing" to protect her. Along the way, they fell in love, and it was cute. When they "broke up", I was sad, but Dahlia made me realize what a strong woman is. I'm so excited to finish the series.
The Draft by Ana Shay (6.95/10) Lowkey disappointed at how this was. It had all my favorite tropes, but the FMC was actually insufferable. Like babygirl needs to be humbled. I get that she's young and excited to be in college and live the college life, but like why do you push yourself on people? Not only did she push herself on her brother's team, which is understandable honestly, she forced Dash to admit his feelings. And the whole time they were messing around, the misunderstanding was insane and how they both immediately went to extreme circumstances gave me the ick. When Madison misunderstood, she went to the extremes to make Dash jealous like girl grow up and keep your petty feelings to yourself. And Dash being called Dash sarcastically bc he's slow? Bro, that gave me the ick. Idk, there were some good parts though. They were cute together but a part, no. They will not last in the long term.
The Graham Effect (7/10) I enjoyed this one, but I don't think about it often. Gigi Graham is a GRAHAM so I thought I would be obsessed, but I was not. It's just weird seeing Garrett as a dad and just so not understanding, but also, Gigi being all grown up and needing a FWB. I get the connection, but I felt like it was just forced proximity and didn't feel the chemistry as strongly as I thought it would be. Maybe it's just because following up with Garrett and Hannah would be very hard. And how they got married???? I'm like... bro? Idk I didn't feel the connection as much which disappointed me.
Love, Within Reason by Everalda Ocampo (7.5/10) I got this as an ARC read a while ago and never got around to it. Though I'm glad I got to it now. I honestly thought this one was cute. I didn't like Mari, the FMC, at first, which is already a bad sign, but as the story progressed, I thought she was very understandable and her opinions were valid. I thought the close family dynamic was very fun and although very annoying at times, it gave a sense of closeness for me. I liked how fun Marcos, the MMC, was. He was a juxtaposition of Mari and I thought they were super cute together. This was a quick, cute read. Too bad it was very fast paced, but it made sense. It was a perfect in between book.
The Road Less Traveled By by Emily Tudor (8.5/10) I got this as an ARC and lemme tell you how proud I am of Emily and her writing. It seems like she grew into her writing and oh my god I love it. I don't know too much about Taylor Swift and how this book is an album or song or whatever, but this book was chef's kiss. It follows a social media influencer x bodyguard, and it opened my eyes to bodyguards, honestly. I didn't see the appeal in Vince, the MMC, but I am so in love with both of them together. I felt the love radiating from my screen and it made me melt. It was wholesome. I am in absolute love with Bree, the FMC. She had a stalker and now that he's out again, she needs a bodyguard with her. Vince has been her bodyguard before and he came back for her. Okay, first off, swoon. Just the way Bree slowly reclaims herself and Vince watching her proudly just makes me swoon. It's a slow burn, but the spice? JEEEZ. I love u Bree and Emily.
Hooked by Emily McIntire (6.6/10) This was my first step into a real dark romance and let me tell you, I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was just the book, but I was like.... That's it? I get it, it's forbidden and there's unaliving aspects and stuff, but I have read heavier shit. AND, it's also a Peter Pan/Captain Hook retelling so it's also my first in that. I don't know what to say. I was super underwhelmed and didn't care for any of the characters whatsoever. Like it wasn't bad, but it was cringy. And what do you mean she gets off by choking HERSELF? Okay... Anyways...
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (9/10) This was one of my thrifted books so I went into this blindly. Based on the blurb, I was hooked, but I didn't fully know like the tropes and all that. Honestly, reading the back, it seemed like I was about to read The Hating Game over, which isn't bad, but it's just like a book I liked when I first started reading. I don't know if I'd fully love it now. But this one, oh my god. I HAD TO FINISH IT. There were some dumb parts like why Olive, the fmc, just didn't acknowledge her boss on the honeymoon like when they meet in the office, she could've been like 'oh, that was my twin sister.' I get that's why Ethan and Olive get together, but also like that part pissed me off how she was fired for lying off the job. I wanted Ethan to grovel more, but their love story was honestly so cute. I couldn't stop giggling and kicking my feet tbh.

hello! what are your top five (or more) hualian fics? I can't just keep rereading your fics so I desperately need some recs! c:
adsjhlk anonnn ;A; ah okay so some of my faves pulled from my top tier of bookmarks (which is wildly subjective and depends upon the day and mood but oh well. here we are):
(under cut bc this got real long)
you'll know, you'll fall by mme_anxious
Rating: E
Summary:
“We talked about it,” Xie Lian says, hearing the frustration in his voice. “I want to go to the next step.” “It's okay if you don't—” Hua Cheng started. “I do! God, I want it so much. I don't want you thinking that I don't. I—I think about it all the time, San Lang.” Hua Cheng looks pleased, the tops of his cheekbones flushing to match his red shirt, and his thumb strokes the back of Xie Lian's hand. “What do you think about, gege?” -- Xie Lian seeks a lesson in desire. And another. And another.
My notes (apologies for this one it’s drawn straight from my bookmark notes lmao):
INTIMACY IS WORTH THE VULNERABILITY! TRUST IS REAL! LOVE EXISTS! HOLY SHIT!!!
i might be tearing up a little bit bc of the abundance of love and care apparent both between hualian and in the writing of this fic. it's. A Lot.
Animal and Real by etymologyplayground (but also all of EP’s hualian fics because they’re the fics I most reread ^^’)
Rating: T
Summary:
Ling Wen and Shi Qing Xuan establish the communication array, and then Ling Wen leaps into the well and disappears. Shi Qing Xuan walks over and sits in front of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. "So," she says. "Dianxia. Crimson Rain Seeks Flower. Fancy meeting you here."
--
Book 1 ended on a cliffhanger. I fell off.
Alternate summary: "Xie Lian's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" Slowly Animorphs Into "Xie Lian And Hua Cheng Have A Nice Day, Actually"
My notes:
I like...don’t...actually....have words for this LMAO but basically I love, love, love Xie Lian getting to be hurt and hurting and Hua Cheng finding different ways to comfort and help him and actually talking about things (like Xie Lian accidentally hurting Hua Cheng’s feelings and them actually TALKING ABOUT IT) and just hnnnn yeah. this is like my go-to fic haha but I heartily rec all of etymologyplayground’s fics for tgcf (also many mdzs/cql fics but i am apparently behind in reading those orz)

Summary:
If you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others, and hearing it will call me like music out of my burrow. You will understand that the things that are yours are unique in all the world. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.
My notes:
Ah gosh. Hua Cheng equating himself with a starving, injured wild thing that doesn’t deserve care or compassion, Xie Lian telling him he loves him the fox anyway, the nature of dessert and love hnnn it’s a good time
Panopticon by @pengiesama
Rating: M
Summary:
Jun Wu has built a very splendid home for Xie Lian, with gifts and friends and wondrous sights just for him. He will be very happy there.
Xie Lian won't take this house arrest lying down.
(Inspired by the book/movie Coraline, by Neil Gaiman.)
My notes:
Just an absolutely delectable balance of suspense and mild horror and love and aaahhh sometimes I forget that parts of this aren’t canon bc this is basically accepted as my canon of Jun Wu. Also “I was taller than that” will never not be my favorite thing
Tame to Fortune's Blows + Something Foreknown by crowdedcafe
Rating: M and T, respectively
Summaries:
For eight hundred years, Ruoye is Xie Lian’s only companion. It tries its best to ease some of his hardships, to lessen the misery he feels. But Ruoye is only a length of silk, and sometimes its love simply isn’t enough in the face of Xie Lian’s suffering.
Or, Ruoye loves Xie Lian when others don’t know how.
(TFB)
E-ming is born with a hole in his heart and an emptiness in his soul. Through centuries of hearing stories about Hua Cheng's beloved, E-ming grows to love the man he was born missing.
(SF)
My notes:
Just really lovely character studies essentially of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng through the lens of their weapons. personally I think they’re best read together but they are each standalone, canon-compliant fics
ALSO:
Innocence Died Screaming, Honey Ask Me I Should Know by @eponinemylove
Rating: T
Summary:
Hua Cheng puts a finger to his temple thoughtfully. He asks, "Who wants to tell me what the deal is with all these damn petals?"
The communication array goes completely silent, a feat almost in itself. Hua Cheng muses silently that gods can, apparently, shut the fuck up—they just choose not to. How convenient.
It takes a moment before Ling Wen manages to speak up. "Your Highness," she says carefully, "what did you say just now?"
"These white petals? There's got to be a hundred of them. The man just—oh yeah, there was a man—exploded into them. What's up with that?"
There's a long stretch of silence where it feels like all of Heaven is holding its breath.
Finally, Ling Wen responds. Her voice is clipped as she asks, "What do you know about the Four Calamities? Specifically, White Flower Mourns Massacre?"
Alternatively: the one where Hua Cheng is a martial god, Xie Lian is a calamity, and nobody is at all what they seem.
My notes:
AAAAAAHHHHH. GOD. THIS FIC. it would be embarrassing to admit how many times I’ve reread it (also I don’t know. late night decisions are not meant to be recorded in the ledger of memory) but it’s so fucking good. Divergent Trilogy (a mini review)
“I suppose a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last.” ― Veronica Roth, Allegiant
A suitable quote for my thoughts on this series. Throughout my time reading Divergent I was sceptical on whether I should actually write some kind of commentary on it. After all, it took me an unusually long time to finish and process these books (due to points mentioned below) but I also did promise myself that I’ll try and write a review on every piece of literature I read lately so here goes:
Just to make it clear; Did I enjoy the Divergent Trilogy? I can’t give you an exact yes or no, simply because this one has fallen sort of in the middle of things for me. I can’t even pin point exactly why it didn’t touch me half as much as my previous ventures into dystopian and young adult literature but I’ll try to break down my critique into specific points.
The “realism” of it all: Yes, I’m well aware that sci-fi isn’t meant to be realistic, but to me series like this one or eg. “The Hunger Games” are meant to show a kind of parallel with our world and darkly satirical future. This was very clear in Divergent by the way, the factions, the experiments, the GDs and GPs and the serums meant to control the population, all things that the corrupt government effectively created and plotted to destroy. However, I feel like there wasn’t much evidence to suggest that this is in fact a possible future for our world. In some way, Roth appears to have focused so much on the corruption element and metaphor of it all that she barely provided the readers with any sci-fi elements to make the dystopia feel “futuristic”. In what future would our species successfully alter someone’s genetic code, create serums that induce all sorts of hallucinations, force people to tell the truth or erase important memories but NOT have advanced healthcare, means of transportation etc.? It just feels a little too specific.
The romance: Oh my! How oh how could this be a YA novel without a sufficient dose of lovey dovey scenes to keep us going? Now keep in mind that this bit is being commented on by someone who a-d-o-r-e-s romantic (even soppy dare I say!) literature. Once again though, Roth didn’t really satisfy me on this one. First of all, can someone enlighten me as to why all YA dystopia HAS to have some romance in it? Is it done for character development purposes? To make us feel more for the heroes and heroines of the stories when say; their soulmate dies? Whatever the case, it has to either be done right or not at all. Needless to say Tobias and Tris flopped for me. To sum it up, kids, even when your parents tragically sacrificed in the beginning of a major revolution, your friends are dying left and right and the world isn’t what you thought, there’s always a little time for sloppy teenage kisses, fumbling in the dark and cheesy “dauntless” type of dates, right?! There were so many times when all the TrisxTobias stuff would come on at such a cliffhanger or inconvenient moment that I just wanted to throw my book out the window. It didn’t make their characters more likable, just more irritating in comparison to the grand story line.
Character Development: I won’t go too hard on this dot because I think this is just a purely personal observation. The books are generally very well written and manage to communicate feelings and situations very transparently. Most of the main characters have a rich backstory and compelling traits. However even though this trilogy is POV I just couldn’t quite pin point who Tris’ character really is and what she’s on about. Perhaps this was the point, to show the complicated nature of someone divergent? Though I did have the same issue with Tobias at times, even in “Allegiant”. I feel as though many characters where all over the place, not very polished, not like real people, which when combined with some major plot twists didn’t make me want to connect with them, laugh or cry with them like I would in other books in the same genre.
Some positive comments: The main components of the entire trilogy are interesting. Veronica Roth has a grandiose imagination and managed to create a very original concept for all Divergent books. I like the story’s development and admire that she didn’t just broaden on the idea of a world based on “factions” and their revolution but opened up to a much bigger and fuller scenario in the end of the series. The plot twists were excellent and some VERY major, (I won’t spoil any!!) especially in the last quarter of “Allegiant”.
Finally I’ll give this a 3/5. A relative good ground as far as dystopia goes, an interesting trilogy to start your journey into unconventional sci-fi but definitely not a MUST read if you have already engulfed yourself in it!
