when I think about the forkle twins too long I get very sad because their situation is and was fucked up in so many ways

You know what would've been fun? If the elves had indefinite lifespans but not indefinite bodies. and them just like. not talking about it it being sort of an open secret that your parents take you aside to quietly explain, then make sure to say 'never mention this again'

Because just think about it. Elves taking a special elixir that maintains their body in its prime state. Skip a day and the decay is obvious, especially if you're already centuries old.

Some of the older elves obsessing because the elixir isn't perfect, it staves it off but they're not eternally twenty anymore, they look human forty now and forty is too much by elvin standards so they get plastic surgery.

Except elves' surgery consists of more elixirs. And the elixirs are almost perfect, too. They don't have the plastic botox effect that humans' plastic surgery does, that makes their face harder to move. The elves just...have this weird feeling about them. Like there's no obvious plastic surgery effect. It's just that uncanny valley feeling of 'face too perfect, too unreal.'

Elves obsessing over taking their elixirs, because there's a single Wanderling of an elf who was an Ancient. She lived in isolation. One day someone visited her and screamed because all that was left was a pile of ashes on the floor within a dress. She didn't want to live anymore and skipped a single day of her elixirs.

Elves can live forever, but unless they use elixirs to maintain their body then they will die. Except this contradicts itself, doesn't it? The very definition of quasi-immortality is living unless an outside force kills you. Your own body shouldn't qualify. And of course it's Sophie who brings this into question when she first hears it.

So what's happening is that elves aren't actually immortal. They just take elixirs to stop their bodies from aging and decaying to nothing. Otherwise, they have a lifespan just longer than a human.

And the very first elixir one takes to slow their aging, preparing your body for the rest, is Youth.

i still can’t understand why Sophie isn’t a twin especially because of this paragraph, like wouldn’t it help in so many ways

cognates, the ability to get two different people’s opinions on the problems in their world, the chance to watch twins grow up and have their own separate lives, back up in case one turned evil/didn’t join/died, the benefits are endless

plus it’s not like Sophie is treated nicely by those around her, i highly doubt that her having a twin would be any worse

What if when Sophie came to the lost cities the black swan had been overthrown, and their leaders arrested. So by the time she arrived, she doesn’t have that same support. I think it’d take the story in a crazy, but fun new direction.

oh that would be very interesting--not only would she have significantly less guidance at the start of the series, but depending on how the Black Swan were handled, the attitude towards Sophie could be quite different; she'd be the product of known convicted criminals, not just the odd human girl.

She was observed when she first arrived, but I imagine that would've been much more intense in this situation. I wonder when she would've arrived, actually. Because Alden didn't find Sophie by his own work, Mr. Forkle led him to her. So without him, when on earth would Sophie have been brought to their world? Would they have discovered that sort of information through a mind break and located her around the same time, or would years pass?

I'm imagining the Mr. Forkle who posed as her neighbor might've escaped being arrest, which would create an interesting dynamic with her having one singular influence and resource.

But that aside, without the rest of the Black Swan able to work masterfully behind the scenes, there'd be no notes, no clues to prompt hidden memories. It would require a lot more work on Sophie's part to figure things out--which, depending on when she was brought to the lost cities and how (agreeing it was the best decision vs council forcing her, for example), she may or may not be capable of.

I'm also curious how that would impact her morals and sense of right; we see her learning from and guided by the Black Swan for most of the series before she branches out, following their methodology and beliefs on the limits. If they were never there, what's stopping her from going a step further much sooner? Especially if she's being more heavily monitored/judged and in order to make any impact she has to push harder--side note: I feel like in that case she might become similar to Tam in her disdain, she didn't do anything but exist and need help and this is what they did?

Would she be allowed to attend Foxfire with a significant association with a serious criminal organization? Even if she hasn't done anything yet, she might. And if she doesn't go to Foxfire (or is too old when brought), her friend group would be entirely different. She might not even have a friend group and it would instead be her against the world, perhaps a few misfits gathered along the way. Fitz might still be around because he found her, but Biana might stay bratty. She wouldn't meet Marella or Jensi, and she wouldn't have been adopted by the Ruewens (because confirmed huge Black Swan association when he thinks they killed Jolie? no way) so no meeting Dex. If she doesn't go to Foxfire, I could see them sending her to Exillium, in which case she might keep Tam and Linh as friends--but with a very different dynamic, since I think Sophie would be incredibly bitter.

Actually now that I'm thinking about this maybe she'd be picked up by the Neverseen. At least temporarily and in the same way that Rayni was--not that she's for their atrocities, but because they extended a hand when no one else did. Which!! Could then be an interesting exploration on how she wasn't a criminal, but via seeing her as one/as dangerous they limited her options and made her into one. She wouldn't have joined the Neverseen if they'd treated her properly, but they didn't, so now she did. Except they don't see it as their fault, as a consequence of their boxing her in, but instead as confirmation of what they always feared.

indeed, Nonsie, there is a lot of potential for a very different but fascinating story here. I've barely scratched the surface of all the implications and everything you could do with it!

reading the keeper book series for the first time, i‘m 30% into flashback, and…. how come we get less answers the more we are into this book series…….

On the other hand, most characters are extremely endearing to me, my favorite is probably elwin, followed by sophie, tam and keefe, and i‘m very interested in marella and maruca, who are slightly getting more attention now.

Biana screams, her face twisting in pain as she reaches a hand out of the flames, grasping for my hand. I grab onto her and pull, sparks flying in my hair and catching my cape on fire. I shriek as the flames eat at my back, but I keep pulling. After a moment, the smoke chokes me and I let go of Biana’s hand. 

She screams, a long, wordless shriek of agony. Blisters erupt along her bare arm and the side of her neck. I nearly vomit, but there is too much smoke and ash in my throat. I blink rapidly, and when I open my eyes again I have lost sight of Biana. 

Fitz is nearby, attempting to rescue Dex from the boulder he’s caught under. His pant leg is on fire. Dex’s face is bloody and there is a gash on his shoulder, the sleeve ripped. Dex’s leg is caught under the boulder and the fire is creeping closer.

Fitz! I transmit.

He looks up, snapping his head around to meet my eyes.

Use telekinesis!! Fitz nods and turns back to Dex. My bare feet pound on the gry grass beneath me splinters embedding themselves in my toes as I run.

Tam is battling with a figure in a black cloak. Linh is trapped under a force field, and I can see her trying to draw water outside of the glowing dome. Five ogres surround Sandor and Grizel so I turn towards them, flinging goblin-throwing stars from my cape pockets. I knock down two of the ogres, and now I can see Sandor and Grizel back to back with their swords raised. They seem like they can handle it, so I keep running. The fire is at my back now, red-hot and towering over me. 

Nearby, Wylie is battling Gethen, but he seems to be losing. I pull Hope from her sheath and charge into the battle. Wylie is flashing a beam of bright purple light into Gethen’s eyes, so I take advantage of the momentary distraction and stab Gethen’s arm. I wince a little when I see the blood, but I am used to violence by now. 

It’s always there, hiding in the shadows. We’ve been at war with the Neverseen for almost two years, and this is one of our most deadly skirmishes. Fintan sparked the Everblaze while we were all assembled in the Black Swan’s newest hideout. So much for that. 

The hideout is surely burned to the ground by now, and Fintan seems to have escaped. Gethen, Vespera, Trix, Umber, Brnt, Lady Gisella, and dozens of other black-cloaked figures are fighting against the collective and a few other elves I haven’t met yet, about twenty gnomes, fifteen goblins, four trolls, and thirty dwarves are all here fighting with my friends and me. I haven’t seen Mr. Forkle yet, so I decide to look for him. 

I close my eyes, the sounds of screams and shouts and metal against metal clanging together and the fire popping and sparking in the distance. I tune all of that out, concentrating on the sounds of thoughts instead. 

This is it. That’s Tam. I keep searching. 

Where is Dex?! Juline’s panicked thoughts are so clear. Sharp and piercing my brain.

GRIZEL!! Sandor is distraught, the image of Grizle with a deep gash in her side blaring into my mind. I hold back tears, but I can’t give up. Mr. Forkle is so important, he can’t be dead. 

What about Keefe? I shove the thought back. I don’t have time to think about his betrayal right now. Finally, I catch a whisper: I wish my brother was here.

Mr. Forkle had a twin brother, but he died in the collapse of Lumenaria a few years ago. Months later, Keefe disappeared; and the only sign of him was the note I found next to Iggy’s cage. The memory of That Day resurfaces and I am thrown into the past.

I have just gotten home from a particularly awkward meeting with the Black Swan. I burned down the Neverseen’s storehouse, but basically no one was pleased with that. I shove my frustrations aside and grab a ripplefluff before heading upstairs.

When I enter my room, I tense. There are footprints on my flowery rug, and Iggy is a different color. He has stripes of teal and blue and purple and pink now, and –I rush closer to his cage– there is a note held under the corner of the cage. I read it, my worry increasing with every word.

Ugh, I’m already regretting saying this. But this is serious.

 I know that a lot has been happening lately, with your abilities, and my crazy mother. And I’m sorry. But I figured out a way to control myself. I hope you won’t hate me for it.

what’s something about Kotlc that the books/readers gloss over?

(oh this is gonna be long) to preface, i understand why most people gloss over this, and the only reason i notice is because of the adoption in my family, but its just something in kotlc thats so deeply important to me, and its the reason i love the series as much as i do.

kotlc is the only series ive ever read that has realistic, non stereotypical, adoption, where the main focus isn’t on adoption. most stories with a premise that focuses on something other than adoption, would pretend like the main characters biological parents/who raised them, where non existent after the first book. the main character would call their new parents mom and dad quickly and there would be no issues. because obviously adoption is all sunshine and rainbows.

in keeper it takes time for Sophie to even feel comfortable calling Havenfeild home, Eda and Grady struggle with adopting a new child who looks so much like their dead daughter. Sophie struggles with missing her family and feeling like she’s replacing them. it takes multiple books for Sophie to call them mom and dad consistently and for them to properly act like a family. thats how i should be, it takes time to feel like someone is a part of your family

adopting someone into your family is like falling in love, it happens slowly, then all at once, before they become apart of your heart for the rest of your life.

and thats what keeper did, she captured the feeling of adoption perfectly, without making it the main plot, it just happens in the background and i will forever love that

but…Tam, not even go evil, but what if he had been so badly manipulated by the neverseen that he switched sides, what if he actually was a traitor, how would Linh feel, how would Teirgan feel, just imagine the effects that would have on everyone. how hard it would be to fight their friend, their brother in battle.

Kotlc is a series sprinkled with tragedies throughout you just have to look, they’re there, most of them are just hidden in the background.

Hi Anon, no trouble at all, happy to answer more questions. I don’t know exactly what a cognate is in KOTLC, but I know what a cognate is in Linguistics. So I can make an educated guess.

Cognate means two things that are connected, usually used to refer to two words that have the same root or origin. The word “cognate” can also refer to related subjects, and the word has also been used as a legal term to refer to people who are your blood relatives.

So I’m guessing a cognate refers to two people who are bonded, and the first thing that comes to my mind is Rey and Benny Solo’s force dyad bond from Star Wars. But since this is KOTLC, I’m guess the bond is more specifically related to their powers, like a special or unique psychic telepathic connection or a special thing that happens when their powers are combined.

However, what I don’t know is what sorts of characters develop a bond like this, whether it develops in romantic couples by “fate” or “destiny” or is biological and links blood relatives or is something you can create between yourself and another person intentionally.

I do have guesses though. My first is Sophie and Keefe: they’re a romantic couple, they’re both telepaths, and they’re both genetic experiments, it just makes sense. The second is Tam and Lihn? I think that’s her name? His twin sister, or any other pair of twins, like Mr. Forkle and his brother whose name I also forgot (Mr. Spoonle? Mr. Knifele? Idk…). Because the twin telepathy trope could also be a thing.

Thoughts on Nightfall (kotlc) : Ok so Mr. Forkles twin? Sadly I wasn't surprised cause my silly self read ✨spoilers✨. What else.......Oh yeah so wait what happened in this book? (sorry my ADHD). Lihn and Tam have to stop slaying so hard or they'll reach their slay limit. Keefe is..forgiven. Dexiana ❤️ (they're so adorable, but they don't know it). I'm torn between Fitzphie and Sokeefe. Amyyy-slay girl, no triggering memories (:finger-wag:). This Vespera chica, she's kinda giving The Handler from Umbrella Academy (if you've watched seasons 1-2 you might get it). Ughhhh Fintan🤢. Oh wait that reminds me Marella, I mean she didn't do horribly much but still, honorable mention. are we gonna see Damel more? And ofc the marvelous Shannon has gone and had Alvars memories ❤️✨erased✨❤️. Ok so yeah end ramble. Also, I'm now more than halfway through the series 🎉

Favorite book and why?

Lodestar is my favorite KOTLC book of all time!!!

Just. The Keefe betrayal arc is FABULOUS. And the whole outward channeling thing was sick, can we see more of that actually? I sorta feel like Shannon forgot she gave elves the ability to explode things with their minds

But literally the Sokeefe angst? And the Fitz trust issues cause his friend just betrayed them? And the insights into Keefe’s character flaws??? (I LOVE me a good flawed character)

Also the sleepover ahskdjdjsjwjs peak stuff! Absolutely amazing!!

Also Shannon managed to make peace talks interesting to watch?? Like other authors should take notes

And the climax scene in lumanaria? Gethen getting the sword out of the stone?? Forkle dying (FINALLY ANOTHER ACTUAL CHARACTER DEATH even if it only impacts the other twin)??

And the one scene where the black swan shows up to fight the neverseen but KEEFE IS THERE WITH THE NEVERSEEN and they have to confront each other and Sophie has to inflict on Keefe but then helps him through the pain and then afterwards she pleads with Keefe to come back and he steals Alvar AND the alluveterre crystal like YES. I was worried after the beginning that Shannon was going to diminish Keefe’s betrayal by making him just a double agent and the only bad thing he did was take the cache. But NO SHE REALLY LET HIM DO SOME PRETTY DESTRUCTIVE STUFF. Immaculate betrayal arc I tell you. It literally makes me love Keefe’s character even more

What do you think the point of the Black Swan is? They hinted that it is “world peace” or “defeating the Neverseen”, but we don’t even know what the end goal of the Neverseen is.

Based on my understanding of the series, I would say the point of both the Black Swan and the Neverseen is a fair society. They were both formed in response to injustices they saw in their world--e.g. the pyrokinetic ban, the treatment of talentless, the othering of twins, etc.

Boths end goal is a better society that treats people appropriately--the difference is what each group thinks "appropriate" means and how they think that goal should be achieved. The Black Swan is less aggressive, more wanting to work within the system as much as possible. They're go around it out of necessity, but would prefer to fix things from the inside. The Neverseen want to take over and start fresh, raze things to the ground and build up a new system, their system.

I don't think the Black Swan was ever formed with the intention of fighting the Neverseen, so I think they're unprepared for it. It's become a goal recently because of the Neverseen's actions getting in the way of/targeting the Black Swan, but the organization predates this conflict and was formed on a different premise. Their methods aren't intended for violence and fighting the way they're engaging with now, they were meant for systemic, professional change. More diplomatic and peaceful, but still persistent and unyielding.

At least, that's my interpretation and analysis of the two groups. I may very well be wrong, but I think the point of both organization is system wide change to make a more fair and just society. How they go about that change, however, is different. Does that make sense? Hopefully it does!

a KOTLC rewrite

I’ve had this idea, where I rewrite KOTLC. No offence, but there is a lot of problems with the books (still love them) like the shit ton of characters, Sophie feeling like the side character compared to Keefe, Biana is low key useless, and the plot twist that didn’t really make sense (Dex’s mom being squall and forkles being a pair of twins to be example and no the jokes don’t count.) So I’ve been thinking of some alternative plot stuff.

Fitz and Biana looking more like the fanart (aka darker skin just cause they look cooler.)

Tam and Linh being part of the Neverseen the defecting (Joined prob of the stigma and there parent issues)

More of foxfire and Exillium (They are cool)

Making Biana the Pyrotechnic (Let’s be honest vanishes are kinda lame.)

Making the Neverseen more prevalent. (Specially in the newer books, it feels like they were kinda wasted over Gisela’s thing.)

Scraping the Forkle thing.

Make Maruca part of the core group.

Make Wylie closer to the group, being kinda like the voice of reason before they run off.

Make Gisela the leader of the Neverseen!!!Then make them do some fucked up shit, not just Keefe.

Make Sophie’s progress in defeating the Neverseen a bit faster! This is more of a gripe but it feels like they get no where.

make Sophie feel more out of place. Give her hetrochromia or something other than brown eyes, I get they all have blue eyes but like it doesn’t feel as interesting cause the majority of the people reading probably have brown eyes. Heterochromia is a lot more rare, it would make a little more sense! Plus they couldn’t make the weird potion thingy to turn eyes brown.

Another thing, the council should be shrunken.

Fitz deserves to get doted on, so give him his own love triangle with dex and tam. This is more of a me thing, I like the idea that Fitz is floated and Biana isn’t into anyone, like Athena. To busy to be in love.

Just nuke Amy, she isn’t really important. I feel like the Black Swan as there own human informant.

an actual plot thing, I feel like they shouldn’t have introduced Sophia’s parents I think she should’ve had an arc where she understands that she will never really know who they were but she wouldn’t care cause she has a family now. That or just make her human mom her real mom cause how the hell does she have another mom but her human mom gave birth to her.
