💖 Fic Writing Review 2023 💖

I was tagged by @penny00dreadful @rocknrollsalad @cranberrymoons and @unclewaynemunson Thanks everyone! You all smashed it in 2023. Here's to more words wording and fun fandom times with our faves.

Tbh, it took me a good month minute to work out how to do this, seeing as I don't post much to ao3 (something I intend on mending in 2024). I'm very much going with the 'feel free to show whatever stats you like' aspect of the rules.

But before all that, I'd like to use this post as an opportunity to acknowledge everyone who enjoys my writing. I kinda just fell into writing in this fandom and discovered that I love it!

I'm also sending love and appreciation to my beloved moots and everyone in the stwg discord server. Here's to another year of creating, sharing and interacting 💖

This fandom really is my happy place a lot of the time, a much-needed creative outlet and a space where I can talk to people who let me be my silly little old self.

I have so much I want to write in 2024 (including some in-the-works stuff listed below). One goal I know I have in 2024 is to write what I'll temporarily title, 'The Origin of Joanie Munson'. I would really like to knuckle down and write a looonnnggg fic this year that would tell that story.

Wayne and Steve get hearing aids: This post was very much inspired by my pop's ongoing struggle with his hearing aids. HoH Steve is a beloved headcanon of mine so I was happy to receive so much love for a little ficlet that came from a very real place.

I always find myself writing this trope and getting Steve all sad and angsty as a personal coping mechanism/outlet for irl Dad Stuff™. Joanie Munson's First Word: I love my Joanie Munson AU. And one thing I love writing into it is Wayne being a doting Grandpa. LOL. i have started season 6 again because my brother is in the whozone and i want to keep up with him. i think the most interesting part so far has been the sheer tonal whiplash between the last episode of 10 and the first episode of 11. jesus christ. as my brother said it's very "of its time" but oughhh god the tone of moffat's stuff, especially those first few episodes, is so jarring and weird and just not very good! i'm not sure if it gets better as it goes or if you just get used to it because season 6 isn't pinging as bad for it but oof.

angus mcdonald, boy detective. he's not exactly new to the detective business, but he solved a pretty Big case and now ppl respect him more. they give him Special Permissions. specifically, he is given permission to take a crack at some older unsolved cases after solving one that has stumped everyone for Quite Some Time (insert classic spicy murder case here). he's getting to become a pretty Notable Detective and he is Ready For This. and a lot of them really just needed a fresh pair of eyes. like, hello, of course old mrs johnson wasn't murdered by her dog, it was obviously her Goddamn Husband, Holy Shit. that kinda thing, yknow??

so he takes this new case on. missing person, easy peasy. only it is not, in fact, easy peasy. the case goes as followed: elven woman, 300ish years old, has been missing for 10 years, was wearing a red robe, had an umbrella etc etc. it's a very pathetic case, if im being completely honest. angus tries to contact the family but the only stone line they gave is dead and every address they gave comes up fruitless. he thinks that maybe they're like, dead, or they gave up. understandable, considering their case had pretty much been declaimed dead before it started.

(which only makes angus wanna solve it more, ofc ofc)

and try as he might, angus just keeps hitting dead ends. like, so many fucking dead ends. he always feels like he gets close to something, but there's a Mental Block stopping him. not like a "i dont know what to do next" mental block, like a "i cannot physically comprehend what's going on anymore" mental block. he spends a while doing other cases, but he keeps coming back to it because there has never been a case angus mcdonald couldn't solve.

eventually, he finds another lead. or well, another case. the rockseeker family hears word about him and hire him to take a crack at finding cyrus rockseeker. coincidentally, he went missing ten years ago. that in itself is not too unusual- faerun as a whole has a disturbing amount of missing person cases, most dating 10 to 12 years ago. but that's a different thing entirely. the point is is that angus had a lead on where cyrus might have gone. the rockseekers own a mine- wave echo cave- and angus is like, 90% sure that's where he went.

so he gets down there and he doesn't find cyrus- but he does find someone else. red robe, check. umbrella, check. elf… skeleton- not preferable, but check. and angus, of course, does not want to tamper with crime scene evidence but he's gotta take something back with him to get tested, to use as proof so they can send another team down here, etc. so he takes the umbrella. and the ding dang skeleton disintegrates. aw man D:

so now he has an umbrella. a lead one case (angus knows all about the door n the rockseeker blood and all that. he had to sit through 45 mins of the rockseekers explaining this to him. but cyrus has got to be behind that door.), a kind of solved second case. at the very least, he can now inform the family what happened to their elf friend and assure them that he will continue to update them as the rockseeker case progresses.

only he can't find them. at all.

this is where the idea gets a little choppy. bc one one hand, i would Love for him to be able to find them before anything else. bc i like confrontation scenes. i did write a lil ficlet on that that we are ignoring for the sake of this ask meme lsdkfsd.

on the other hand, i have a very very vivid image of angus continuing to work on rockseeker case and trying to find the elf woman's family. when that falls through, he makes the rockseeker case his main priority. except that like- this umbrella does not want to leave him alone. the magic department in goldcliff say that it's an umbrastaff which means it's magic. and while angus does not want to tamper with evidence, it's hard when the thing literally rolls after him. it's his Friend now!! he loves it! it throws flames at his enemies!

anyway lskdfsd eventually it gets to a point where the rockseeker family is called in to help open the door- if they want to know where cyrus went, they're gonna have to get in that room. angus has a very uncomfortable adventure with gundren rockseeker and finally, finally the door is open. inside is, as predicted, is cyrus. except he's all burnt up and there's this Glove on his hand. and, again, angus does not like tampering with evidence but this time he doesnt even get to debate his reasons why by gundren is taking the glove and then he's on fire and, yknow, all of that.

jumpcut to angus in phandalin. end of htbg's style, the city goes up in flames, angus hides in the well with his umbrella friend. by the time he gets out, the entire city is just. Gone. n all that's left is the circle of black glass.

this, ofc, leads to a lot of investigations on what the Fuck happened. angus gives the glove a wide berth as he calls in reinforcements. part of me wants to say the militia takes the glove, somehow, but that seems like a mess. i think it's more of them blocking off the area and trying to figure out what the fuck it is, because they all feel the Weird Vibes about it. several people end up banned from the case because they just- want it so bad.

one morning, angus wakes up (im imagining little tents set up around the glassing) to an alarm blaring. there are People trying to steal the glove. angus isn't the toughest lil guy, but he's determined and he's fast, so he's the first to catch up with them. the thieves have this big silver ship that they are racing back, but Angus somehow manages to cut them off. he points the umbrastaff at them and is like "what the FUCK do you think your doing??"

missing person case, now ft. angus mcdonald as the role of Missing Person. turns out these thieves are not above kidnapping if you've got the umbralla that belonged to their long lost family member.

i could go on. i have imagined this so many different ways. i have so many thoughts. this got so long help sldjfsdf

Sometimes. I go through phases of trying to be better about it, but my brain is also weird and I start to feel conceited if I keep saying thank you😅 I always massively appreciate them though, it makes me so happy!

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I don't think any, except for maybe a couple of galladrabbles like this one

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

They have to end to have a happy ending lol, but basically anything that's done.

7. Do you write crossovers?

I'm never sure what can be classed as a crossover, but I've done 911 (In Case of Emergency), Jurassic Park (Tooth and Claw), sort of X-Men, sort of Star Wars (with ideas for a full fic that may or may not come to be), and probably some I'm forgetting.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Just once I think, and it was just someone who really doesn't like Vee's nickname being spelled with more than one letter.🤣

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, and I'm way too proud of it lol. It's mostly way too wordy and flowery language abounds because that's also the only way I can read it😂 I've got a collection of ficlets here from when I first started to write NSFW by request, and other assorted works.

Not that I'm aware of.

No, but that would be really cool!

I refuse to say I won't finish anything I've started posting lol, but there are a couple things in an old doc that will probably never see the light of day.

I usually say description, but I've been struggling with it lately. Funnily enough, I think dialogue has been working best for me even though I've traditionally been uncomfortable with it.

Overcomplicating things: the plot, the sentence structure, everything. If I can overdo something I will.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I've done it once and I think it worked out ok, but I avoid it in general because I don't want to screw it up.

💖, I read a lot of HP fanfiction and had a lot of really weird ideas that I just decided to start writing. My shop teacher in middle school read one of said fics and complimented me on it (thank you for lying through your teeth, Mr Garcia, I appreciate it) and I've just, kinda been writing ever since? And have since gotten a lot better since then.

👀, upcoming WIP, currently working on the final bit of my "The Suicide Squad but Rick and Harley are already dating" series. It's the Harley/Luna scene that I had to completely retcon to make it work. And next Mandomera prompt is gonna be Omera biting and kissing Din's pulse points and it's gonna get ✨spicy✨ 😏

The first of those that I'm actively writing at the moment is In Hindsight, It's Not So Bad, which is a World Trigger fic revolving around Hyuse and his various teenage shenanigans on Meeden. Inspired by the works of the wonderful @/transcendental_youth, which can be found here!

The second is In Love and War which is a set of sequel one-shots to @/cyberflamingo's fic Tiger and Rabbit (which you should most definitely check out because it is very good). It's a mafia/assassin au with a LOT of spicy Killugon. And... trauma. And death. Look they're in the NGL it's kinda a given. I haven't written anything like it before, so it's a very experimental experience for me.

I also have a wip for my own killugon-focused hxh au in my drafts, so keep an eye out for any updates on that.

On the shelf collecting dust is Peacekeeper, a Tazjec-centric medieval au fic that I originally wrote in 2020 but have since been (very slowly) rewriting, and Tales From Mineral Wells which is a series of ficlets based on Mr. Neil Patrick Harris's book "The Magic Misfits". I do intend to update these... one day... but for now they're just gonna be sitting around.

It always happens like this. Every time they link. They have the time of their life —hang out at the beach, go shopping for new outfits, come up with new and increasingly ridiculous katas. But in the they always end up here. They should know by now not to drink wine around each other, but deep down, Suki knows they’re doing this shit on purpose. The innocent memories on the beach get chased away by their new outfits ending up on the floor, and their katas turn into kisses that smell of rosé. Suki can taste arousal in the space between Ty Lee’s inner thighs, can see it in the way their bodies curve around each other’s as their glasses of wine lay empty besides the bed. Suki can see it all, and what she doesn’t see is any semblance of intoxication. Yet that’s what they blame it on anyway, every time. She never thought her and her best friend would end up being the living lyrics to a song, but in the aftermath of her legs quivering from Ty Lee’s tongue winding her up, she can’t help but think —it started out with a kiss. How did it end up like this?

The very first bottle of wine that led to this (stored on top of her kitchen shelves) holds her answers, but Ty Lee is too warm in Suki’s arms for Suki to bother to look.

It really says something about what your life has become, you think, that you’d hardly blink if you walked through a wormhole that led to a department store, but you’re thoroughly confused by why a relatively innocuous Christmas song is playing in your home.

Yet another side effect of dating a Bat that no one warned you about.

His methods are a bit odd, but you can’t argue with the results…

But seriously tho, he’s not all that big on Christmas despite having celebrated it for the whole of his childhood.

I touched on this a bit back in day 4’s installment, but basically his parents made the holidays feel mass produced and highly impersonal to the point where he’s all but turned off from them.

In the time since he’s been mending his relationship with the holiday, but despite all of Alfie and the rest’s best efforts he’s still kinda shaky on it.

🌟 That was all just my long winded way of saying that if you don’t want to celebrate Christmas, or any other winter holiday for that matter, he gets it.

It should also be said that he’s well aware that his issues are rather minor when set up against those of others, and he’s not out to try and compare things.

But this is all too heavy for this particular HC so let’s move on, shall we?

🌟 Anyways!

🌟 He’s not so soured on the holiday season that celebrating with loved ones is completely off of the table.

He’s down to do whatever it is you’re most comfortable, be it a full out decking of halls or something v. minimalistic and-or obscure like Festivus.

((I was not kidding, he really does have a Pole lmao))

🌟 Like his brothers he’s a knowledge monger—in fact he’s the biggest one of them all—so expect to be asked a thousand and one questions about your holiday of choice/cultural customs/personal traditions.

Given how often he falls into random rabbit holes on the internet when really he should be sleeping, there’s a good chance that he already has at least some passing knowledge about said holiday, but he’s always down to learn more.

Because he does not know how to do things casually, he’ll download damn near every book on the subject that has a four-star or above rating on Amazon lmao.

Also looks at Wikis, but that’s more so because he wants to see how wrong they got things.

((you just know that he’s the kind to edit that site religiously; he finds it relaxing, the lil weirdo lol))

If you celebrate something other than Christmas he’ll probably get more into it by way of it being removed from what he grew up with.

He’s gonna want to know what makes the holiday/season special to you and all the little things that go along with that so that he can provide you with the personally tailored experience that he never got as a small child.

In fact after just one year of this he’ll find that he looks forwards to such things. He may not be able to change the past, but making a such a lovely and beautifully entwined future with you? Yeah, he likes the sound of that…

🌟 All that said he’s not super big on decorating, but that’s only because he hasn’t really given it a proper chance.

Again, he didn’t get to do things like this in the earlier parts of his childhood, and by the time he got to Bruce he’d already been left jaded. Alfie tried to get him to help out with trimming the tree and the like, but by then he was in full on surly teen mode.

Once he got older and moved into his own spot he never had a reason to decorate—especially since Dick would roll around every year and fix his place up whether he wanted him to or not lol.

All that said he’s not actually opposed to the idea, and he loves you besides, so if you want to go all out he’s more than willing to help.

Once you start you’ll both be pleasantly surprised to find that he really gets into it.

🌟 His personal tastes are low-key avant-garde, weirdly enough.

Like he fucks with some really strange shit, but somehow it works??

For example: he’ll get a jet black tree and trim it with those hollow geometric shapes in one metallic hue or another and pure white lights. It doesn’t really look much like a Christmas tree, but it’s still v. pretty. It’s certainly a focal piece if nothing else.

Sometimes it seems like he’s going out of his way to make things as odd as possible, but that’s only because he is lol. He really likes pushing the limits on what can still be considered a Christmas tree.

He also really likes the more traditional, but highly elaborate joints that the mall displays every year, but ain’t nobody got time for that, and he knows that he’d probably never be able to achieve that look himself anyways. Though if you can, please go for it! He’d love to see it.

Another one that’d have multiple trees because he’s got too many Ideas™ lol.

🌟 Trees aside, he really likes sleek, clean lines and monochrome palettes in general, so if left to his own devices expect your home to look like something out of a video game.

Think DBH or even the classier bits of CP2077. Classic silhouettes gone geometric with a slightly futuristic vibe.

Also LED lights. Like a lot of them. He can really give Jay a run for his money in this department lol.

🌟 The general vibe is… interesting while you’re decorating.

By the time you get ready to put everything up he’s already laid out a plan so all there is left to do now is execute it.

Like Dames, he wants to get things done as quickly as possible, because while he does enjoy the process more than he expected to, it’s hardly the most entertaining task in the world.

…it doesn’t help that he’s keyed up on several servings of something caffeinated lol.

This leads to him damn near flying through things for the first half only to slow down drastically once all that sugar starts to kick in. The crash is real, y’all, but he pushes through.

Once he calms the atmosphere gets p. chill, naturally. So much so that he’ll probably end up falling asleep in a really random place/position.

You may or may not have an entire album’s worth of photos of this. One of the cutest has to be the one where he’s curled up around a tangled ball of lights. You had wanted to throw the thing out, but he had insisted that he could undo it, but before he could even get a quarter of a way through it he passed out lmao…

🌟 Overall decorating with Tim turns out to be a lot more enjoyable than either of you thought it would be. And honestly he loves you a little bit more for giving him a new perspective on and appreciation for such things…

The Ends Verses the Means || WC: 700~

“Make my wish come true “All I want for Christmas is you~”

You squint your eyes at the overly familiar tune that blares out from some unknown source before looking around to make sure you haven’t somehow wandered into a Macy’s or something. But no, you are indeed in your living room, but honestly that just makes this whole thing weirder. It really says something about what your life has become, you think, that you’d hardly blink if you walked through a wormhole that led to a department store, but you’re thoroughly confused by why a relatively innocuous Christmas song is playing in your home.

Yet another side effect of dating a Bat that no one warned you about.

You heft the box of decorations that have been collecting dust in your storage closet since last year up higher against your hip as you peer at your man. He certainly looks like the Tim you’d left not even five minutes ago, but there’s still the chance that this is some sort of parallel universe where everything is exactly the same, but he voluntarily listens to “All I Want for Christmas is You”.

When you comment on this he just snorts. “I’m using it as inspiration.”

“For…?”

“Getting this decorating done faster,” he tells you blandly. “No shade to Ms. Carey, but this song’s been playing in stores for nearly two months at this point, never mind the fact that Dick’s been blasting the album in the Cave since Freeze powered the city back in October.” You can’t help but to laugh a bit at the shudder that racks his frame, and though he does glare at you there’s no real heat behind the action.

“Anyway, I figured that putting it on loop would be a good motivator to get through all of this in one go.”

You concede the point with a shrug, before settling down on the couch and placing the box at your feet so you can nose through its contents. We’ve got to start labeling this stuff better, you decide as you find yet another set of lights. At least these are actually wrapped properly around the spool and not a jumbled mess like the last two you’d run across.

“Hey, what color are those?” Tim asks as he tosses a quick glance over his shoulder.

“Looks like a white and blue mix.”

“Excellent. Pass ‘em over, would ya?”

The two of you continue to work in a companionable silence, with the only the breach being your occasional hum of the song’s catchy hook. It isn’t until you find yourself repeating it well over twenty minutes later that you realize that nothing else has played.

“…Tim, baby, when you said you were gonna loop it…?”

He takes in your expression—mildly shell-shocked, underlined by a creeping dread—with a confused furrow of his brow. “What? What were you expecting?”

“The album. I thought you were gonna loop the whole album, not just this song!”

“How would that help? That album’s a bop. I mean not that this song isn’t, it’s just overplayed, yanno?”

Before you can nope out of the room, toned arms are pulling you in to an embrace that you cannot readily escape—not that you want to overmuch, even when the opening notes of the cursed song starting up again. He points out how his plan’s working in between a smattering of kisses, and though you hate to admit it, he is right. You’ve nearly completed your living room, and if you keep this momentum you’ll probably be done with the whole of the house in an hour or so.

Maybe this is the real reason stores keep this in rotation. It imbues its listeners with some type of weird holiday fueled energy, while simultaneously lulling you into a scarily efficient stupor…

You don’t bother with voicing this, choosing instead to meet Tim’s next peck full on. The kiss draws out into something that leaves you breathless and aching, but before it can deepen into something more he breaks away. Your whining pout is met with one last brush of lips before he pulls away completely, a self-satisfied smirk pulling at ruddy, slightly swollen lips.

“Help me get this done, pretty baby, and then we can make some music of our own, yeah?”

“That was cheesy as fuck, Drake.”

“Maybe,” he admits with an easy smile, “but you really trying to get garland up now, ain’t you?”

“…shut up and work.”

“As my love commands…”

🌟 Day 8: Movie Nights with the (Bat)Boys™, Pt. 4 || Watching Holiday Specials

Movie nights with Tim are p. commonplace, but are no less lovely for it. Because really, how can they be anything but wonderful when you’ve got your baby wrapped snug in your arms?

There’s no place he’d rather be and certainly no one else he’d rather be with.

Last movie: the conjuring 3, it was okay even if quite predictable and typical for horrors. I enjoyed pretty scenes and I adore the main couple, so it was light and fun for me, not very challenging

Sweet, Savoury, or Spicy: spicy 🌶 I can’t handle too much sweetness and savoury is a no <3 (vegetarian 🌿)

Currently working on: fjvhbdkv SO MUCH, I have around 30 ideas in drafts and like 10 wips 😭 Among these are poems, fics, and memes. But the most recent things I touched would be a short drabble for one person who followed me and was instantly attacked with a message if they have requests because I felt like it ;D I am so sorry for taking so long, I will get back to it soon T-T Another thing was some fengqing (or more like qingfeng xd) short make-out session lmao. I’m also taking part in mxtx big bang where am beta-ing a fun fic for a fun person 💚 There is also one artist who I asked if I could share their beautiful art here but never actually got to it and it’s been months?? since then. Plus I have so many artists to catch up on here. Also another semester on my uni started and projects are soon due. And at work we’re reaching a deadline for a huge project where I’m leading a big portion of it so I sometimes stay late at work and end up v tired. 

So yeah, I have a lot of responsibilities and promises while my free time is very short, so all of these private and creative things take up whatever tiny bit of strength and time I have and thus take so painfully long :’) I don't remember the last time when I had much time for myself instead of helping someone out or doing responsibilities or just lying mindlessly because of exhaustion xdd so ye that's one of the reasons why I'm significantly less active and not up to date in the fandom recently. But I’ll manage

1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?

Times New Roman. I can't physically write in any other font, it pains me, lmao.

2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil?

I mean, I would do it because—hypothetically—I had no choice, but I'd suck at it, lol. I don't know how people write by hand, it's absolute magic to me. My handwriting is atrocious and my spelling isn't much better, so I think I'd end up giving up.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

Tbh, I will write pretty much anything. I do have my preferences, but I'll try most things once. If I have to choose though, I do struggle with writing m/f. I won't go into detail, but it's something that I really, really have to have spoons for.

On the flip side, I could probably write monsterfucking as easy as breathing, lol. Or anything with a predator/prey vibe.

This is from my ficlet Love Is The Music:

“Shhh,” he whispers as he hooks the boy’s long legs over his shoulders. He kisses his way down from Stiles’s chest, lower and lower, relishing in how each muscle trembles under his lips. He stops at the trail of hair below his navel and rests his forehead against Stiles's belly, exhaling deeply—his own body shivering with it. “You have no idea what you mean to me.”

So, they've been dating for a while, but Peter is very reserved about his feelings and hasn't said "I love you" and probably won't be able to for a while, but that doesn’t mean it's not true. He loves Stiles with all his heart and this is his declaration. I did have it originally that he said the words outright, but it just didn't fit—and wasn't the vibe I was going for with Peter here. I also took inspiration for this whole story for Pretty Woman, I ADORE the piano scene, and I wanted to recreate it vaguely into Steter.

I kinda love this little ficlet, I feel like it says a lot in so few words. Idk.
