Idea by @idfkeatdust
I originally wanted the reader to be a child of Hestia but only to find out she doesn’t really have any kids. (From what I’ve read) So that’s out of the question. Love that for me 😂
Also Luke acting like a big bro to the younger campers lives in my head rent free. This is too long and probably doesn’t make much sense but I was like half asleep whilst writing this and unable to figure out how to end this seamlessly, so blame that and shitty writing.
Luke vividly remembered the exact moment he fell for you as though it were yesterday, how could he not when it was one of the only things that brought him any semblance of happiness and normality within the typically grim life of a demi-god.
It was during your first ever game of capture the flag at camp, you were allied with the blue team and stationed with the flag as a defender, tasked with the important job of stopping the red team from snagging it and claiming victory along with bragging rights. You were hyper vigilant of everything, from your stance, to the way you held your sword and shield like a iron vice, right down to the pace of your breathing and even made a headcount of every time you blinked as to stop yourself from your mind over reacting at every sound the forest made; believing it to be the enemy team making their move ahead of time.
If you were under any other circumstance, Luke would’ve found this kind of thing reaction endearing but it didn’t matter in the end because the blue team ended up winning out against the red team, all thanks to Luke and his excelled talents in swordsmanship and leadership as per usual.
What really sealed the deal for Luke in his feelings for you however was how genuinely happy you seemed upon hearing the news that your team won. You looked towards him with the brightest eyes and sweetest, widest smile he’s ever seen on the face of anyone he had ever met previous to you, and yet he couldn’t help but attempt to imitate your blinding smile but failed as it felt disingenuous; that typically tends to happens when you’ve won at pretty much every capture the flag since arrival, serval times over.
‘We won?’ You asked, still smiling.
‘Are your ears filled with cotton?’ Like asked rhetorically, holding you by the shoulder, smiling back at you. ‘yeah we won. Why? You act like this is your first time winning anything?’ He continued and takes in the way you averted your gaze elsewhere as though pondering whether or not you should admit something to him, only to look back at him and say ‘well I never got to do the winning as I was never given the opportunity to be on the winning team. The winning side.’ You admitted, shrugging your shoulders. ‘Only ever on the losing side. So I tend to treasure the times where I do win, even if it’s small victories, they still mean something in the end.’ You added.
Luke’s smile softened as he hears this, whilst also finding immense respect for you in recognising and taking pride in triumphs in ways that others would consider not worth the effort in obtaining; it truly made him think back on how he had taken his own achievements for granted and instead of celebrating the fact that he even won at all. ‘That’s one hell of a way to look at victory,’ Luke chuckled, ‘but I’ll let you what, stick with me and you’ll always be on the winning side.’ He promised, squeezing your shoulder as he began to drag you back towards the dinning pavilion.
‘You really want me on your team?’ You said incredulously as though you couldn’t believe what you were hearing before adding. ‘I didn’t really do anything other than defend the flag.’
‘Protecting the flag is a pivotal part of the game,’ Luke began, ‘it wouldn’t be called capture the flag if protecting the primary objective of the game wasn’t top priory for maintaining a single teams victory, whilst also attempting to steal the enemies flag that’s being heavily guarded to death.’ He says and you couldn’t help but chuckle at his ending statement, which made him warm inside from that fact that he had obtained his first small victory in making you chuckle; Luke was staring to slowly understand why you choice to savour the smaller victories in life, it definitely had it’s merits. ‘So to answer your question, yes, I would love to have you on my team. A hundred percent.’ He adds and once again your blinding smile was back on him and in that moment Luke felt as though he had finally won at life.
Now all he wanted was for you to stake claim to his heart because it was already yours and will be yours long after; Being yours would be his life’s greatest achievement.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While Luke fell first, you fell harder for him then you thought you would after capture the flag.
He was the first ever friend you made at camp, which he continued to be even after you moved out of the Hermes cabin after being claimed as the child of Erebus, primordial god of darkness and shadows, so it was only natural that you wanted to take up any given opportunity to spend time with Luke and utilise every second of every minute to the fullest.
Yeah, he was conventionally attractive but that was merely a bonus to the perfect personality he had as camp half-bloods’ golden boy. What really sold you on him was how brotherly he acted towards the younger campers; making sure they were okay, giving them an answer to their every question, going out of his way to make sure they were settling in fine all the while being their resinated tour guide through camp and trying out various different activities to determine who their godly parents were based on what they excelled at.
He tried implementing a sense of normality for them, whether it worked or nor didn’t matter, it was the thought that he tried to remind these younger demi-gods that they were allowed to be human, and not the weapons that they were soon going to unfortunately be trained into. You were aware of Luke’s stance of the Greek pantheon of gods and goddesses and their blatant neglect and mistreatment of their children, only bothering to take notice of them when they could be proven useful to go on menial quests that untimely mean nothing, only to then be discarded soon after like a severely damaged toy; never to be played with again by it’s owner.
It was the inevitable fate of all demi-gods in Luke’s eyes, no valour, no glory, no memoriam, only the fact that a burned burial shroud of your godly parent is all to remember you by because in the end it wasn’t you -the demi-god- who was being remembered; it was the weapon you were moulded into by force for your parent’s honour that would be remembered.
However in the moments where you stood a distance away from the archery range, watching as Luke forced the newest addition to camp into crouching to avoid a rouge arrow that flew over their heads and implied itself deep into the trunk of a tree; it was obvious that the kid should be kept far away from from a bow and arrow for the foreseeable future as archery was defiantly not within his skill set, seeing as he could’ve easily just struck somebody with that stray arrow of his but you couldn’t help but smile at how Luke helped the boy up by his arm, checking him over for injuries while also asking if he was okay.
‘You alright there Damien? You’re not hurt anywhere are you?’ You heard Luke ask the younger lad with chestnut hair and wide doe eyes filled with fright, looking him over one more time to be certain that he was indeed injury free.
‘Y-yeah, I don’t think archery is my thing.’ Damien replied and Luke’s face of worry was soon replaced by a relieved expression, followed by a chuckle in disbelief as he raised a brow at the kid, as he then said ‘you don’t say? Now how about we put that down and go somewhere else before you let loose another route arrow, how does that sound?’ Damien was quick to discard the bow and arrow as though it burned him and went to follow Luke but before you could go back to what it was you were doing before you had gotten distracted, you heard Luke’s voice speak up once again, this time it was closely behind you; ‘Quick detour before we move onto the next activity Damien, there’s someone special I want you to meet first.’
Your breath hitched in your throat when you felt a familiar arm drape across your shoulder and pull you into his side, finding yourself on the receiving end of one of Luke’s pretty smiles that had your insides melting like butter, but all you could do was reciprocate his smile with one of your own, unknown of the affects it had on the son of Hermes; though it was apparently obvious to the young lad standing awkwardly off to the side as he innocently asks. ‘Is this the person you couldn’t stop saying had a smile that could outshine the stars?’ Your eyes almost bugged out of your head at the comment as your heart leapt into your throat, even Luke looked a little taken aback by this kids openness and had to cough into his hand in hopes of hiding his flustered expression.
‘Damien this is y/n, child of Erebus. y/n, this is Damien, our newest addition.’ Luke introduce you to one another, clearly avoiding the question Damien made earlier as though he didn’t hear it, but Damien was obviously a smart kid as he saw through this as one would a glass widow.
‘It’s nice to meet you Damien, I hope Luke hasn’t scared you too badly yet.’ You joked, nudging the aforementioned boy playfully in the side, wanting the boy to feel at ease. ‘Accusations!’ Luke cried, nudging you back, causing you to laugh, making him smile in response. ‘These are false accusations being made to tarnish my name and drag it through the mud out of sheer jealously.’
‘Jealously?’ You replied, brow raised as your arms crossed over your chest. ‘Since when and I’m only looking out for Damien’s best interests at heart, being stuck with you is a fate I wouldn’t wish upon my worst of enemies.’ You continued to jest, another thing that you loved about Luke was the fact that you didn’t have to be overly serious with him, that didn’t mean you weren’t against having deep conversations because you’ve had them before down by the lake, but it was moments like there’s where having a bit of a laugh and a banter with one another was enough to make you temporality forget the reality of your lives and act your age for once; It was considered a distraction but a welcomed one indeed.
‘And yet I didn’t hear you voice any of this when I was showing you camp on your first day now did I?’ Luke replied cheekily as he looked over at Damien with a thumb jabbed in your direction, adding, ‘you hear what I have to deal with all the time Damien. Honestly they’re such a nightmare.’ Damien smiled and you could see the look of pride shine within Luke’s eyes at that, as though proud of himself for easing the tension from Damien’s poor shoulders.
You hope that one day you’d get the opportunity to tell him how you felt, whenever that may be because you honestly didn’t know much longer you could make yourself wait, but until then you were more then willing to play the long game.
what's quar
This Quar’s War is a fresh little miniature war game, currently played at the skirmish scale like 40k’s Necromunda or Kill Team, where you’re playing as these cute little anteater fellas called the Quar:
It’s played on in a small space, usually 2x2 or 3x3, with a nice clutter of terrain scattered around to give the little guys a good amount of cover. The core box for Quar, Clash of Rhyfles, comes with two factions:
The Crusaders and the Coftyrans as shown in the picture above. These are more factions slowly being released for the game, but the main concept is the Crusaders (left hand side of the image,) and their allies are trying to flush out nobility and royalty from their world, while the Coftyrans (right hand side of the image) and their allies are safeguarding the old royalist way of life and defending their farmsteads from the invading Crusaders.
The game is played using an action deck, on your turn, your opponent draws a card from the deck and keeps it hidden from you. The card will indicate how many activations you will have in your turn, ranging from 3-5. You know you will always have at least 3, so once you hit your third activation for your turn you ask your opponent “do I have a 4th?” If you do, you get to make one more action… and if you’re lucky, you may even have a 5th! This gives a lot of the action a sense of danger, dread, and a bit of that gambling rush. Once all of your activations are used up, you draw a card for your opponent, keeping it hidden, and they begin their turn.
A round lasts until the deck is drawn out, and usually goes very fast. You reshuffle the deck and start round 2, and keep going until you finish round 3 or 4, depending on the size of your armies. Games usually last around 20-50 minutes in my experience.
Where a lot of the fun for the game comes from is the fact that you don’t know how any action will go. The tests are simple: 3d6 vs. a skill score, usually of 12, with a series of negative modifiers. When shooting at a Ready unit, the target can pick to Dive for Cover or Return Fire, giving negatives to the shooter, but also adding an element of surprise. You can absolutely see your little guy dive for cover and get gobsmacked as he landed badly, or you could see your shooter get shot along with his target if the target was lucky enough to score a hit of their own. When actually hit, a model goes down. Once down, you have no idea if it’s dead or not. You need to move a model into base contact and spend a whole activation checking to see if they’re alive! If you are lucky, they’ll get right back up and start fighting again. If not, well, you got a dead Quar on your hands.
It’s that chaos of not knowing what your opponent will do, not knowing how many activations you have in your turn, not knowing how many of your guys are actually dead and out, all that, that really just makes the game so much fun. I’ve only played a handful of times now, but I can say firmly that a single round of Quar has given me more tension and thrill out of war gaming than most Warhammer games in my 15 years of dipping into all sorts of tabletop games. Blood Bowl and Mordheim are the two I would say match its intensity, and Blood Bowl is far easier to get folks into, but there is such a charm to Quar.
Everyone I’ve brought over to my place to teach how to play it has fallen in love with the game, not just because the rules are fun and exciting, but because the Quar themselves are just so fun to look at! They’re silly little guys, and as you have them fight over a war torn farmstead, you feel so much for your silly little guys, watching them get blown up by a grenade, only to stand back up proud to continue the fight later. It’s fantastic.
tlou episode 8 thoughts!!
- man.... joel had the death rattle and everything...
- ellie trying to sound intimidating, i love her sm 😭 as much as i dearly love the "ditto for buddy boy" line, it felt wrong coming from this version of ellie. similar to how in the podcast they said it would've been strange for pedro's joel to say "you're treading on some mighty thin ice", i thought they would go the same route here. it's still cute though
- i love the addition of david being a christian preacher. i can imagine manyyy people only became religious after the world ended, making them more susceptible to manipulation than people who may have already been religious their whole lives. if you don't know anything about the bible except what your preacher tells you, you'll believe anything he says. you're desperate to find meaning and salvation in this cruel world and this guy is offering it to you on a silver platter (haha). finding out later that he just uses religion as a way to justify his own sick brain is like.... so real
- wow, david revealed himself quick. i knew we wouldn't get a super long fight scene with david as our ally like the game, but i expected at least one infected to be killed to solidify their bond before breaking it. that scene felt rushed to me :/
- the way ellie feels so much more comfortable being affectionate with joel because he's in this vulnerable state 🥺 if joel never got hurt, i truly believe it would've taken them YEARS to get to the point where ellie lays next to him and he rests his cheek on her head. being in danger speeds up the realization of "oh shit, there's no sense in building walls between us because it's already too late -- you feel like family to me and it would hurt me if you were gone"
- my god that kill in the basement was brutal. pedro captured the perfect amount of badass joel still on the verge of death energy lmao
- FUCK YEAH OH MY GOD that interrogation scene was literally perfection, i wouldn't change a single thing. my ass was CLENCHED kfjskfjs
- i like that the cannibalism is (kinda) less cartoonish in this version. i REALLY like (and by that i mean i'm very horrified by) the fact that only a few people know they're eating human meat while everyone else is left in the dark. especially the poor wife and child :(
- i didn't think it was possible to make the scene with david and ellie in the cage any grosser but they managed it ??? it was so visceral oh my god i want to kill that man. ellie is so smart and resourceful and it's devastating :( the way david uses her 'violent side' as a way to manipulate her is sick. it's such a typical abuser thing to do: "if you hurt me in retaliation you're actually just as bad as me" 🤢 it's written masterfully. i know that line will stick with ellie for a long time :( i'm choosing to interpret it this way because i despise the idea that the show-runners are implying that ellie truly does have a violent heart and is somehow kin to david because of that. i refuse to interpret it that way, ew ew ew.
- yooooo he said cunt
- i was worried the whole episode would feel rushed but i actually appreciate how it continues to ramp up as joel becomes more desperate to find ellie
- jesus christ.. they really went there.... i know it was implied in the game too but wow. i was in complete shock until the moment joel called her baby girl and then the floodgates opened. fucking hell man. poor ellie fucks sake
- i am so so so so glad that they still allowed ellie to save herself rather than be saved by joel. that has always been so special to me. although i wish ellie never had to live with the memory of killing david, it's so important that she was able to talk, think, and fight her way out of that situation. joel swoops in at the last second to COMFORT her, not to save her. it's perfection.
10/10 episode wow this one was brutal but easily my favorite?? i was on the edge of my seat for all 53 minutes even though i knew damn well what was about to happen. it was the perfect mix of action scenes compounding the emotional scenes
I did a good thing I think!
A small YouTube channel who does reaction vids and and live play gaming that I actively watch posted a HPL part 1 reaction a few days ago. I rarely comment but I asked that they reconsider posting the vid and continuing the game and suggested they do some research into the major issues people have with the content in game, specifically mentioning it being antisemitic.
I know it's too late and they already paid for the game, but the next day they did thank me for bringing it to their attention. They have stated that they won't be continuing the game and they took down the vid. I truly think they didn't know and that they first heard about it thanks to my comment.
I only got a little push back from others for my comment, mostly that it wasn't worth my time trying to bring up the issues with the content when the game was already purchased but nothing more alarming than that.
I think I did good. But was it enough? I feel I was being kind and level headed. Just giving the information was enough in this case. I did unsubscribe till they responded to my comment.
In your opinion what else could/should I have done?
-trying to be an ally
I don't think there was anything else you could do. This was the perfect way to handle this, in my opinion, which, admittedly, doesn't mean very much, as I am one tiny person.
But the thing is that facts are the best way to tackle this stuff, I think. If we get mad, we get called oversensitive, or too angry, or too woke, you know?
So if you're just like "yo, here's what people are saying about this game/show/etc, maybe promoting it isn't awesome?" it lets people look for themselves, and make the decision for themselves.
And sometimes people will double down, and sometimes they'll think about it. You can't control other people.
In these instances, there really isn't an "enough" because all of us just one single person, and we can only do what we can do. <3
🔴, 🟢, 🔵, 🟣 for taz!! had to narrow it down here this one has some good questions LOL maybe i'll come back one day n ask abt the other guys too......
🔴 Red- What is a trait your OC has that those around them don't see very often? Is it seen by a rare few or completely overlooked?
despite being very in the Now, taz can be pretty reflective. i mentioned in the other ask that G.U.N. scorned her. taz likes to improve on things for the sake of improvement, but she can be very spiteful, and this spite is what motivated her to work as hard as she is on her current project. with G.U.N.'s status now uncertain, it's given her a lot to think about.
the only person who's seen this subtlety is vi, and only because they know how to read taz's idiosyncrasies.
🟢 Green- What is considered a weakness in your OC that is actually a strength? What is a strength in your character that can be twisted into a weakness?
a weakness... taz does not take care of herself, she kinda forgets to? she's hunched over all the time, her hair's a mess, she's got bags under her eyes, you wouldn't think she's really that capable at a first glance. this unassuming appearance is a strength, in the same way that colombo's disheveled appearance benefits him.
one of taz's greatest strengths would definitely be her tenacity; she just won't quit! HOWEVER, this does often lead to tunnel vision. the fact that she places the value of her work so high above everything else creates difficulty forming strong connections, making allies. after leaving G.U.N., she was only able to recruit a handful of her former coworkers to aid in her research. after the events of my story, the only person who continued to follow her was vi.
🔵 Blue- How would your OC spend a single day of interrupted peace? Where would they go or who would they be with?
truth be told, taz would just spend it working on whatever project she's dedicated herself to, that's her idea of a good time. in a rare scenario where she has nothing better to do, she'd probably spend the day flipping through research papers or browsing for scented candles. other than that, she's not really one for going out and doing anything, no keeping company.
vi used to try and convince her to go out and do something else, but has since learned to adjust their suggestions to be more in line with what she's focused on (ex. suggesting they go to the library to browse for old newspaper articles).
🟣 Purple- What is something that your OC could not live without? What keeps them grounded in the worst of times?
scented candles! any but the ones that smell like baked goods/cinnamon. taz keeps a collection of scented candles in her workspace for this reason; they help keep her cool and collected.
✨ ask game ✨
#cosmic chatter#asks#taz nocturn#my ocs#thank you again for sending so many of these waaaa#one day ill figure out how to bring up What Specifically taz is working on#YOU ALREADY KNOW what she's doing (or trying to do) but i feel silly continuously saying “her research” with no way to know What it is#one day... one day
Watched NCT 127 on MMTG with Jaejae. Despite having watched all of the MMTG episodes with Dream, I haven't watched any with Jaejae yet. This'll be the first one, for Fact Check promotions. I like Jaejae so I think it'll be funny.
So Johnny is on hosting duties with Jaejae. I feel like Johnny's done quite a bit of hosting for NCT shows, I wonder if that's in the cards for him in the future.
Jungwoo and Jaejae English conversation lol.
LOL
Omg Jaejae interviewed the Barbie cast? Wow
Is Johnny studying his notes?
Johnny giving Jaejae the intel while Jaejae takes notes
Lol Johnny spilling all of the tea
Mark though Johnny and Jaejae's intro greeting was cute :P I find that guys in kpop in general are more comfortable calling things cute which is nice :3
Jaejae gaslit the guys into calling her their family? X'D
LMAO they found middle school footage of Jaehyun singing but what's hilarious is the conversation between the people who are filming X'D
Aw, Jaehyun got embarrassed
I've seen this clip of Jungwoo dancing to Kick It from the K Star Next Door XD
Aw I understand this viewpoint though, of wanting to catch up to the members who do speak English because it opens a lot of doors. Not just from a career standpoint but just about being able to access more things.
Lol Jungwoo just learns slang XD from his teacher Allie
Jaejae has hosted quite a few NCT events now :P
Doyoung continues to poke at and unmask Jungwoo's impulsiveness and attention-seeking lol
Mark said he was really shocked by Jungwoo showing his abs and Haechan's stroking his head to soothe him lol
LOL theorizing which dating shows suit each member. Doyoung would do the rounds on kpop socmed with lists like these. Johnny: Single's Inferno Taeil: Transit Love Jaehyun: Heart Signal Haechan, Yuta: I Am Solo
Yuta was like "nooo I want to be on Heart Signal too!"
Doyoung said he'd be on the panel instead of any of those shows. I assume that's the people who comment on these variety shows (like in the little bubbles in the corner). And Jaejae was like "he's trying to avoid the question!"
Omggg Haechan your brain is huge. He was like "Jaehyun and Doyoung should go on Heart Signal together and have a love triangle."
Yuta said Doyoung would definitely lose in a love triangle and Doyoung was like "It's not just about looks!" and Jaehyun was like "yes, yes, okay, we know."
Rock star Yuta >3
LMAO Mark was just saying how awesome Yuta's hype up was and Jaejae was like "after 2 years, he still doesn't change. he still speaks without saying anything." No but for real, Mark has this habit of just saying stuff ToT His thoughts aren't so organized when he speaks lol.
Jungwoo still in training for hyping up in crowds with swearing
Aw 127 are not big eaters
Taeyong being like "I got full after having the black raspberry" and Jaejae being like naw that ain't it
Taeyong played Animal Crossing with his fans. I did watch one such video and it was pretty cute :3
Taeyong would hit the fans in-game so they couldn't give him money XD
They were talking about how Doyoung was the only one who stood up during a DoJaeJung performance and the choreographer said that he was right. The second time it happened, it must have been purposeful from Jaehyun and Jungwoo to leave Doyoung hanging XD
Oh here we go again XD This has been Doyoung bullying hours this entire hour. Now they're talking about how Doyoung takes fake-casual boyfriend pictures for Instagram.
Johnny not letting Doyoung live and copying his photo poses XD
Whatever was going on here while Jungwoo was trying to defend his tour guide behaviour to Jaehyun
Jaehyun wears a lot of clothes with holes, both artificial and natural
Yuta doesn't sneeze, fart, or burp (in public)
It was a big moment when Doyoung heard Yuta fart for the first time XD
The fact that the basketball video is of kids makes it so much more amusing X'D
They were getting so serious about doing the basketball challenge and Jaejae was like "Why are you taking this so seriously?"
LOL the way Johnny was like let's do this with the people who know what they're doing so we know what it looks like (though I feel like he'd want to do it just so that they can have the satisfaction of having done it XD). Anyway Johnny was like Jaehyun, Mark, come here let's do this.
Yuta is the weak link
Jaejae being like "Why am I being implicated in this failure" XD
Ahhh MMTG is so much fun <3
I was going to wait until I got off work- but this just can't wait. As a rabid Ravio fan and official Ravio submitter to this poll, I cannot find it in myself to lay here quietly while my boy is neglected.
So let's talk about Ravio! PURPLE Bunny-man merchant extraordinaire!
First off, he's purple. He's a bunny. He's a little overwhelming. These are the first things about him you're likely feeling as you're introduced to him. Right away you're both attached and interested. Even as he moves into your house and kicks aside all of your furniture you can't help but adore this guy as he does the god damn cringiest dance known to date- caramelldansen.
So in the actual game, as any Zelda game, you need special items to activate certain dungeons and to complete certain quests. Typically you need to go through a lot of trouble and strife to get these items. You have to STRUGGLE in finding the correct order of the dungeons to go through. But instead! This absolute Chad of a character! Just rents them to you! He quickly explains he's trying to make a profit in such an unforgiving world and he's realized a gap in the market! To sell to young heroes like yourself! Not only does he sell you these crucial items he's painstakingly made all by himself- he even gives you a bracelet for free that's integral to the games core mechanics. He's even kind enough to send his bird (Sheerow) to check on you should you fall in a dungeon! Absolutely not to just get back his merchandise How sweet and caring is that!
He even continues to support you and gives you a charming nickname when the rest of the town is against you and calls Link a thief! He's just so genuinely jazzed that you're back and alive! Ready to rent more of his deluxe items
Even after all of that you might still be thinking- well all this guy wants is money. But INCORRECT. Because later he even offers to SELL you his one of a kind items! As soon as the option is available he offers every single item he's created for you so far! At a mighty reasonable price might I add- even if the numbers look high, with the sheer amount of rupees you find EVERYWHERE in Hyrule it would only take an hour max to grind enough gems to get all of the buyable items.
Even after all of that. After all the money you have given him and the home you've lent, one would assume he's set right? His role in the game is finished.
BUT ITS NOT. In you final hour- mere moments more and you're sure to perish- this KING appears in all his purple honor and gives back all the rupees he's obtained to help a fallen kingdom. in exchange for the villain of the game to take pity and take their anger on him instead of the Hero he'd been helping the entire game. His best friend and old ally even. He's constantly referring himself to a coward, as nothing at all like the hero type- but in your final moments he throws away everything just to help you, even if it means burning the last bit of twine hold his remaining bridges together, revealing his identity as the hero that failed to save his kingdom. Knowing that in doing this, he's further dooming his own life and family if only to help the kind hero that gave their home to him and the land that hero is trying to protect.
There's even a part where you can find his old decrepit home with his diary stating how he never wanted to be a hero. How he feels he'll never quite live up to the title. So the fact that he does all of this ANYWAY is reason enough for him to have a shot at the title of purplest boy.
So please, I know the cat is cute as hell but Ravio deserves your votes! Just as he's wormed his way into our hearts with both greed and sacrifice.
He's the purplest of men but also the bravest.
Also in Hyrule Warriors he shows up with a hammer and kicks ass while running in the most silliest of ways and I think that's cute as fuck.
VOTE FOR RAVIO! He deserves Affection
Honestly couldn’t care less about the MC’s game proficiency in most cases. So they’re good at games? Good for them, he’s sure they’re happy.
But when they’re playing against him on the other hand…
Well, Lucifer may or may not be skilled at whatever game you set him on (he’s a very quick learner so never underestimate him), but he’s whole new levels of competitive when he wants to be. ESPECIALLY if he already thinks he’s hot shit at something.
Video games? Not his forte. Table top games? One word for you: Chess.
Lucifer believes that he can and will whip pretty much anyone’s ass in chess. That includes Satan, Solomon, Levi, and even Diavolo. He is at grandmaster level.
So imagine his shock, no, his disdain to have lost a game of chess to the MC… The moment they said "Checkmate" he stared at the board in front of them for a solid five minutes trying to work out where he went wrong…
And he wasn’t having that.
He and the MC now have regular chess matches in which he wins some and loses some so the tally stays pretty evenly tied. Really it’s all good fun... (but if they think he’s going to let them go home when he’s on a losing count, they’re Dead. Wrong. He’ll drag them back to down just to play chess with him until the score is right again. He DOES NOT lose, you hear? 🤨).
Mammon
Guess who’s found his gambling buddy??
No, really. He and the MC can make a KILLING at a Poker or Blackjack table! He’s never seen anyone better at poker than they are!! They have nerves of steel and give nothing away, so he’s lost more than a few hands to them before...
Even past the casinos, they’re perfect for making bets on! He once arranged a Devil Cart competition between the MC and Levi and took bets around RAD for who’d win...
Naturally, everybody assumed the Devildom’s resident Super-Otaku would win hands down, but the MC had this insane last minute save with a blue shell and pulled ahead in the last lap!!
He was like, the only person that bet on the MC and he got soooo much money that MC found HIM crying and hugging a bag of Grimm after the match…
Any time they win a game that gets him money, he’ll treat them like royalty for the next week. Man knows not to bite the hand that feeds him!... and creditors at bay... 😬
It may get slightly annoying that Mammon won't stop telling them about gaming competitions where they can get him more prize money, but hey, at least he's supportive, I guess.
Leviathan
Oh they are either his best friend or mortal enemy… Sometimes both in the same day.
Our boy hates losing, can't stand it any better than Lucifer, you KNOW the second he knows there's someone out there who even has a chance of beating him, he gets serious. This is not a "friendly rivalry," MC.
When they’re playing any game against each other, he'll call them by their gamertag/online persona to keep himself focused (yes, even if they’re playing Monopoly). They can't be his MC right now, they gotta be the person he's going to beat...
He's NOT opposed to dirty tactics to win, either. Saying things that will get them mad or flustered mid-match? Check. Using his tail to distract or tease them? Check. Just being a general nuisance/annoyance in game for the hell of it? Guilty as charged!
He's both a sore winner AND a sore loser, so unfortunately MC, you really can't win here... He'll be obnoxious regardless of the outcome.
However… when they’re on the same team, it's really something special. They don't just destroy the competition, they bulldoze over them like an armored tank barreling through rush hour traffic!
These two are legends in the online gaming community and have even started a streaming channel on the side. Sometimes your worst enemies also make the best allies... Who knew? 🤷♀️
Satan
Is surprisingly impressed by their gaming prowess. Are they just supremely skilled or incredibly lucky, you think…?
That being said, he's not the biggest gaming man on the planet so he's not too competitive with them one way or the other.
When Satan plays a video game, he usually goes for story-based, single-person experiences anyway so it's not like he could compete with them even if he wanted to.
That being said, they do share an informal challenge of sorts when it comes to puzzle/detective games (a not so guilty pleasure of his). He likes to try and beat the levels first, so when they start playing a new one they'll both compare time spent and scores.
He even enjoys playing those Devildom-style AR murder mystery games with them! It’s pretty cute to watch Satan get into it, he dips into his inner Levi and cosplays as some of his favorite TV drama detectives for the occasion and insists they dress as his co-star (best just go along with him. It’s not a bad time, even if they have to carry around an old tobacco pipe for a few hours).
Asmodeus
Good at games? That sounds dangerously like they're another Levi… 🙄 What about party games? Oh oh, or drinking games??
Actually scratch that. How about ANY game while drunk? That sounds pretty fun doesn’t it??
Like Drunk Truth or Dare!! Oh that's a favorite of his… 🤭
To be fair to the MC, the booze does diminish their skills somewhat (because that's kind of what it does in general) but not by all that much… It's pretty impressive.
He once challenged them to a game of Drunk Twister figuring that they'd be too unsteady to actually win for once, but no. If anything, the alcohol must have numbed the stretching pains because they bent over him like a pretzel!
Not that he was complaining or anything… 😏
He likes to take the MC to parties where he knows a game or two will be played just to show off to the crowd and brag that they’re HIS lovely, talented human! You go, MC, beat that competition to a pulp! 😌
Beelzebub
Sports count as games too, right? Well, they aren't half bad at those either.
Beel found it surprising that he found a human who could actually keep up with him. His brothers rarely want to play practice games with him anyway so it’s pretty exciting to have a sports partner at home!
He likes to ask the MC to help him train with practice matches or to go over certain moves or maneuvers he’s having trouble with. It’s not uncommon for the brothers to come home and find the two of them tossing a ball around in the front yard or something.
And the both of them on the same team? Forget it. It takes the dream team of Lucifer and Mammon (who aren’t just arguing with each other for once) to even come close to a challenge for them.
He also enjoys playing the occasional video game with them, though he treats it a lot like playing with Levi and just assumes he’ll never win unless he gets lucky - which does happen from time to time.
He doesn’t mind losing that much as long as he’s having fun, and if nothing else he can always win against them in an eating contest… He’s got those on lockdown. Come at’em MC, he’ll pack away an entire fridge before you’re done with your first plate. Try him.
Belphegor
So Belphie enjoys a good game or two - video-based or otherwise - it comes with the lazy-bastard territory. He may not be as skilled as Levi, but he can hold his own in some genres.
But he’s given up on beating the MC looong ago.
Do you know how much practice it would take? How many hours that he would have to use?? The hours where he could be napping instead??? Yeah, no thanks. They can continue to be the reigning Super Smash Devils champion for all he cares.
Buuuut even he has to admit, it’s pretty relaxing to watch the MC play something in the background... There’s a certain sort of satisfaction to watching someone who’s good at a game just play it straight through.
If they’re set up in Levi’s room or the Common area then Belphie may come over, set his pillow up on the floor, and watch them play. He may even throw in a comment or two like, “You missed a health pack,” or “Better save now,” but other than that he likes to just let them do their thing.
The MC has had many an all-nighter with Belphie spectating until about 4am or so. Then he’s dead to the world and they have to work out how to get his not-exactly-light demon ass onto a couch…
Or they can just leave him faceplanted and snoring on the floor. Up to them, really cause he did it to himself. 🤷♀️
Game Recommendations likes Duskwood
I'm sure there are others like myself looking games similar to Duskwood to play. So I thought I'd play some and give you my thoughts. If you have suggestions let me know. I'll update this from time to time. This was last updated on January 28th of 2023.
Completed:
The Healing
Pros:
Players really got to know the core characters, and I felt it was pretty immersive.
I personally am tired of the 'swap and make 3' (aka candy crush) like games, so I liked the minigames used for 'hacking.
Pretty clever puzzles
If you like dark this does get a bit dark
What's scarier than one masked killer? Three.
For premium, I loved breaking the fourth wall and talking to the authors. Great fun.
Multiple endings. I believe there is a good, a neutral, and a bad end.
Your choices matter, even when they may not seem to.
Cons:
So. Many. Characters! It was hard for me to remember who was who and with each character came a lot of info.
Considering so many characters, I felt like only Andreas/Zoe were romanceable.
I was unable to save everyone, which makes me sad. However, that does make the fight more personal.
Would I recommend/Recommend buying premium?
Absolutely recommend playing. If you want 4th wall breaking dialogue yes premium's worth it, if not then I wouldn't recommend buying. I don't recall premium coming up any other time really.
Blue Orchid
Pros:
I like the puzzles and the 'minigames' in this one. They show you a photo and you solve the puzzle based on it, or you find the important things.
If there's a puzzle your struggling to figure out, no worries. The groups on your side and after a bit they'll figure it out. They provide hints too.
Small cast, and I quite liked the characters. There is no romance, but there's very little time for such thing.
There's more I really liked, but I'd spoil too much so I'll say this. I was not expecting the plot twist at the end of chapter 1 and into chapter 2. The game did a great job keeping me on my toes.
As you can imagine I found the plot really engaging, and interesting.
Depending on your preference, the game isn't actually all that long. I got most of it finished in a single evening.
Cons:
Ticket system. Most of your dialogue options require a ticket. So you have the option to pay for more, or watch free ads. Takes about 20 minutes for tickets to refresh.
This one is not a murder mystery situation. So if you're expecting to uncover the identity of a killer, this isn't for you. It's a bit more complicated of a plot to explain without some massive spoilers. Let me just say, it's more science fiction than crime.
First chapter alone would probably make people want to stop, I do recommend continuing. I don't want to spoil too much though.
Personally, I don't like when characters are my allies, then not, then they are, then they're not again. Let me just say, got a few emotions I need to work through on who I should have trusted/liked at the end.
You don't really develop much of a bond with the characters like in the Healing or Duskwood. In fact you really only learn the back story of two characters, and those are the two I'm most confused about.
Would I recommend/Recommend buying premium?
Absolutely recommend playing. I found it very fun, and a decent short game. As for buying premium? I don't think it's worth it. No special dialogue or anything. It's just 10usd for unlimited tickets. I can just "watch" a bunch of ads.
Currently Playing:
Somewhere- The Vault Papers
Thoughts thus far: (I'm not very far in this game)
Unlike the other games, this one doesn't look like a phone interface. It's more monotone in color and blocky.
The game will be put on hold from anywhere from minutes to hours so the characters in it can do something. Can be a bit annoying.
I haven't encountered any minigames yet. Just been directing 'Cat' on how to escape danger.
The term Crop Corp made me laugh.
Then it went downhill again.
I hate Cat. She acts in a way that makes it VERY hard for me to like her.
Honest opinion, I'm annoyed by the waiting only to not have dialogue options. Personally not a huge fan thus far and from what I've read from the developer's replies to bad reviews, not going great.
Scriptic: Interactive Dramas
Thoughts thus far: (Completed one of the first episodes)
Multiple chapters, multiple episodes
Oh my gosh I'm getting Layton Brothers Mystery Room vibes. I'm hyped
I have to pay for the next chapter of a case :,D
You play as a detective who is the 'behind the phone' guy. You contact the on the ground men, the lab, and intelligence.
You can interrogate suspects and decide on if you arrest them or not.
Honestly, very good chapter 1, holy cow I am very tempted to buy the next chapter of the 'redman' case
I have discovered there are free seasons.
Recommended
The Seven, aka The Healing's prequels.
Chick Flick Moments - Sam Winchester Imagine (Supernatural)
Title: Chick Flick Moments
Pairing: Sam Winchester X Reader
Requested: by an anonymous reader
Word Count: 2,363 words
Warning(s): violence, cussing, Sam embarrassing himself, spoilers for any movie/show listed in the author's note
Summary: (Season 11) Gabriel takes a break from hiding to teach (Y/n) and Sam to forgive each other.
Author's Note: I had so much fun putting this request together! Also, if I remember correctly, this reader wanted to remain anonymous.
Here are links to all the scenes that inspired parts of this imagine:
1 (Princess Bride), 2 (8x12 Criminal Minds; can't find just the scene to link), 3 (Moulin Rouge), 4 (The Notebook), 5 (The 10 Things I Hate About You), 6 (Gilmore Girls), 7 (La La Land)
Hey! I did a rewrite of the ending of Supernatural. It took a really long time to complete, so it would mean a lot to me if you check it out. Here’s a link! (it’s on my personal account)
-----------------------------------
I rolled my eyes as I walked through the bunker.
Sam was still ranting about the most recent hunt. I was just tired of listening to it. Dean had long since given up trying to control his brother, who had shown no sign of listening to anyone.
"You can't just throw yourself into every single enemy," Sam yelled. "Fun fact, you're not Superman!"
"Oh my god," I finally, turning around. I had been halfway through the library at this point. Dean continued through the bunker, ignoring us. "I ran up to one extra vamp because you were about to get your throat ripped out! Yes, I put myself in danger but it was to save you!"
"Why are you so desperate to be a hero," he asked.
"Why are you so pissy that I saved you," I shouted back.
I let out a yell before turning and leaving.
"Where are you going?"
"To bed," I shouted from down the hall. "Maybe you'll be nicer in the morning! You're welcome for saving your ass!"
I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut. I changed quickly, throwing my old clothes into the corner before curling up on my bed. My emotions got the better of me. I started crying into my pillow.
Imagine saving the man you secretly loved... and then he got mad at you about it.
I fell asleep crying that night.
--time skip--
I shot awake, cringing at how bright it was.
I looked around, letting my eyes adjust to the light.
I was on a hill. I was on a hill, lying in the grass with the sun shining on my face. This is not good.
I stood up and did a circle to look around the long stretches of grass. Nothing looked even slightly familiar.
"For fuck's sake," I muttered.
I decided that the best option would be to try to climb down and find a person... somewhere.
I was just about to start making my way down the hill when I felt a hand grab me.
Out of pure fear, I grabbed the person and pulled them from behind me. The person went flying down the hill.
"(Y/n)," I heard Sam's voice yell as he rolled down the hill.
I put my hand over my mouth. He soon stopped rolling and then he stood up, scrambling to pull the black mask off of his face. I sighed, dropping my hand when I saw he was alright.
"Sam," I called.
"Your instinct is to throw some down a hill," Sam asked.
"When a masked man tries to grab me, definitely," I replied. "Fun fact, Sam, I can actually defend myself."
He gave me a sarcastic smile. I shot it right back to him.
Sam looked down at his outfit before sighing and shrugging at me. He had just started to move back up the hill when my visions went dark.
I opened my eyes a few moments later.
What had been an open field was now a dark warehouse or factory. I saw Sam across from me, but also a group of people behind him. I recognized them. They were characters from Criminal Minds, a guilty pleasure I watched when we weren't hunting.
I tried to figure out what was happening.
Then, I became all too aware of the barrel of a gun pressing into my neck.
"No," Sam yelled.
It clicked.
Sam was supposed to be Spencer. I was Maeve. This was Zugzwang.
My heart dropped.
"Wait, please, don't," Sam yelled as the gun pressed harder on my neck.
"Sam, shut up," I snapped.
"Me for (Y/n)," he shouted.
"You would do that," Diane- the unsub of that episode- asked.
"Yes," Sam replied.
"No," I yelled. "Sam, shut up."
"You shut up," Diane growled at me.
"One difference between me and her...," I growled back.
I grabbed the gun, pushing it forward, away from my neck. The bullet she tried to fire hit the brick wall. I turned, bringing an elbow down on her arm. Her hand dropped the gun into my grasp. I pointed it toward her.
"...I'm not scared of a simple gun."
The others walked over and arrested her. I looked at Sam.
"If you continued, she would've killed herself, which would've killed me," I explained. He furrowed his eyebrows. "I watch this show when we aren't hunting."
He walks over, going to hug me before the scene changes again.
"Holy...," I trailed off as I looked around.
Around us, we could see the tops of roofs and a beautiful night sky. It was almost a dreamy setting.
"Where are we now," Sam asked.
"Only the great Moulin Rouge," Sam and I both twirled around to face... Gabriel. "I know, I know... I'm not dead, anyway!"
I rolled my eyes.
"You two need to learn a lesson," he pointed at us.
"It's like back in 2010," I mumbled. "Play our roles to get out. Probably why we were pulled out of the last two."
"You'll fall into them naturally, I promise," Gabriel smirked. "And yes. Stop ignoring the plotline."
"Alright... sure, I was gonna get shot for your crappy game," I snapped sarcastically.
Then, he was gone. I rolled my eyes.
"So, what are the roles," Sam asked as I walked around the top of the elephant.
"Well, Christian and Satine," I pointed between us. "Maeve and Spencer. The Princess Bride and Westley. It's all romance."
"Why," Sam scrunched his face up.
"Because Gabe wants to get his rocks off," I said sarcastically, "I don't know, Sam!"
I walked down the stairs of the elephant. It was gorgeous here. It was just as vibrant as the movie made it look.
"Wow," I look back at Sam. "This is awesome."
I chuckled and nodded.
"What seen is it?"
"The Elephant Love Medley," I said. "Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman sing this mash-up of famous love songs as his character tries to convince her that there is nothing more important than love."
"I'm not gonna sing," Sam shook his head.
"I was not gonna ask you too," I chuckled. "I've heard you sing."
"Rude."
I just shrugged.
I looked around at the room, trying to figure out how to play these roles without the singing.
"Wait," I said. "Come on."
I grabbed his hand and pulled him back to the stairs.
"What is it," Sam asked as we made it to the top.
"At the end of the medley, Christian and Satine are dancing and they walk out onto this field of clouds and are held up in the sky."
"What-"
"This whole movie feels like a fever dream the first time you watch it."
"Come on," Sam held a hand out to me.
"Can you dance?"
"Not well," he chuckled. "The role didn't say I needed to be good."
He grabbed my hand and pulled me closer to him.
I tried to lead his steps and laughed as he stumbled into a pattern.
"Come on," I moved back so I could grab only one hand.
I led him a few steps forward and onto- what seemed to be- steps in the clouds. I let out an excited laugh when it worked. Sam looked at me and grinned at my excitement.
As soon as got to the top of the steps... it was gone.
We were in the middle of the street now.
"Aw, that was just mean," I mumbled. I glared at Sam when I heard him laughed.
He held his hands up jokingly before extending one toward me. I furrowed my eyebrows at him.
"I know what movie this is," he shrugged. I motioned for him to continue explaining. He walked over, hand still held out to me, "The Notebook. Noah and Allie dance in the street. So... will you dance with me? Even without the sequence where we dance in the clouds."
I bit my lip as I smiled.
I took his hand and let him pull me into the street. I laughed as I stumbled into his chest.
We fell into the scene naturally.
Sam held one of my hands in his and held my waist with the other. I placed my free hand on his shoulder. I looked up at him. It felt strange that we so casually fell into the scene but I was happy.
Sam jokingly twirled me around before pulling me back to his chest. I closed my eyes and chuckled.
"What," he asked.
"Nothing," I shook my head. "I just never saw you as such a romantic."
"Well, don't tell anyone, you'll ruin my reputation," he said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes.
Sam spun the two of us in a circle before going to dip me. I didn't think I'd ever get to experience something like this. It always just felt like something I should forget about as a hunter. I was starting to forget why I was so angry with Sam in the first place.
I barely noticed that Sam was leaning in before the scene around me changed.
I was on a football field.
I looked around.
There was no sign of Sam.
"Crap," I mumbled, trying to figure out where to look first.
Then, there was a voice going over the field's speakers.
"You're just too good to be true... can't take my eyes off of you..."
I looked around toward the stands to see Sam walking with a mic. Can't sing, my ass.
"You'd be like heaven to touch... I wanna hold you so much"
"Oh my god," I muttered.
"At long last love has arrived... And I thank God I'm alive... You're just too good to be true... Can't take my eyes off of you."
I tried to bite back my laugh. He shrugged at me with an embarrassed smile and stepped into the actual stands.
We both jumped when the marching band started playing. I looked to see Gabriel smirking and leading their march.
Sam and I shrugged at each other. He continued on with the act.
Now, Sam Winchester pretending to be Patrick in "10 Things I Hate About You" was a treat... and was exactly what you imagined it would be.
He was almost stumbling down the steps as he continued on with the act. I was laughing hysterically by the time I saw the security guards starting to run in.
"Sam," I yelled, pointing behind him.
"Crap," I heard through the mic (which made me almost double-over in laughter) as he tried to take off running.
As soon as he was grabbed, the scene changed.
We both took a deep breath when we realized we were sitting together in a car.
"Thank god," Sam mumbled.
"That was a great performance, by the way," I said, still chuckling.
"Shut up," he muttered, laughing along with me. We fell silent after a minute. "So... what scene is this?"
"I have no idea," I replied.
"It's Gilmore Girls, dumbasses," we heard Gabriel's voice but saw no sign of him. "Season 1, Episode 16... absolute idiots."
"Didn't peg him for a Gilmore Girls fan," I said. Sam laughed.
"Me neither."
We fell silent again.
"I'm sorry," Sam said, looking over at me. "You were right. You can defend yourself and you were just trying to help me. I'm sorry for being such a dick about it."
I grinned, "Thanks... I forgive you. I know you were just worried about me."
Sam smiled back.
"I... umm...," Sam looked down for a moment, clearing his throat and collecting his thoughts. "I just... I love you."
My heart leaped up into my throat. I blinked at him a few times and forced a chuckle out. Which was the wrong response but I panicked. Hunters... we could face the devil but emotions were a no-no.
"(Y/n)," Sam's smile dropped slowly when he realized I wasn't responding.
I was just about to respond when the scene changed again.
Sam was gone again and I was on a city street.
"Dammit," I muttered.
I ran down the street, turning the corner. I looked at the wall of the building I was by. Was this a jazz club?
I walked through the door and was guided to a table so I could sit down and watch the performance.
"La La Land," I said.
Sam and I watched this together. Dean had gone to bed. We weren't tired and just turned this movie on because it looked like it was mostly happy.
Big dance numbers, beautiful effects... and the epilogue that made me hide tears from Sam.
I looked at the stage. Sam was sitting there, wearing a suit, looking at the audience nervously. He hesitantly reached toward the piano. It was like it was a prerecorded track. It sounded just like the movie.
I smiled.
I just wanted to talk to him.
Soon the performance ended.
I stood up and started walking over, seeing Sam starting to walk out.
I grinned at him, "Sam-"
He cut me off by cupping the sides of my face and kissing me softly. I touched his sides lightly, smiling against his lips. It was... magic. Absolute magic.
Then, I shot awake, back in my bed in the bunker.
The game was over. Thank God.
"(Y/n)," I heard yell through the bunker hall.
I ran into the hall and ran toward his room.
We stopped as soon as we saw each other.
"Please tell me that wasn't a dream," I said. He shook his head, smiling widely at me.
I ran over, pulling him down to kiss him again. It was softer than our last kiss and I loved it. His arms wrapped around me and pulled me closer. I buried my hands through his hair.
"Woah, what did I miss," we pulled away when we heard Dean.
I could basically feel Sam chuckle against my lips before he moved to look at his brother. I turned around in Sam's arm.
"A chick flick moment," Sam answered.
"Alright," Dean gave us a weird look before leaving without another word.
I looked back at Sam with a smile, "I love you."
"I love you too," he grinned and leaned in to kiss me softly again.
Note
*long ask warning* Just wondering, to what extent is the rtdl novel canon? I get that Kumazaki’s involved and it makes sense that the story doesn’t line up with the games completely one-to-one (you gotta have room for creativity, after all!), but what about the characterization and such? This is a little silly, but as someone who likes Magolor quite a bit I’d be disappointed if this characterization of him turned out to be canon. I’ve always liked the novels as fun little non-canon adaptations, but only that: non-canon. Maybe the rtdl novel isn’t set in the same continuity as the other novels, but his personality seems to be consistent with his other (extremely assholish) novel appearances. I just can’t see this Magolor as being the same guy in the ending of Dream Collection, or the same guy Kumazaki said “wanted to be Kirby’s friend,” y’know?
...Fellow Magolor fan, I feel your pain.
If it helps, here is something from Kumazaki-shi's commentary section:
"However, with respect to people who've played the original game, there's the trouble of how much a new interpretation will be accepted in a media-mix project. I still haven't discovered the answer to that. However, I feel that Takase-sensei's novel could serve as at least one answer."
The novel is ONE interpretation of the game's events. Now, Takase-sensei was allowed in on the good deets for her work on this one, but even with access to design notes and things, Kumazaki-shi doesn't say this is the definitive version of Return to Dream Land, just one version...
Massive Ending Spoilers for a Novel Still Early in Translation
(Also a HUGE rant about my problems with the novel - yes, I have them. And yes, they are all about Magolor’s treatment.)
....Thank goodness this is just one interpretation, because while I was fairly low-key about it in my early impressions, I'm actually pretty disappointed at the treatment of Magolor and his relationship with the gang!
I (like many others) entered this novel hungrily hoping for a really good fight with Magolor Soul. Maybe some POV, even? Magolor’s realization that he actually had people who helped him not because he was so good at manipulating them but because they cared about him. And he wants to care back but...it’s too late. He’s not in control. “Control” wasn’t what he wanted and now he just wants it all to go back to the days when they were galavanting on Popstar.
It didn’t even have to go quite that deep. We never had to hear Magolor’s inner voice. Or his attempts to voice his regret and sadness through the Crown’s twisted form. There’s so much you can do with description alone. Frankly I don’t know how you could write a Magolor Soul battle and somehow MISS EVERY SINGLE INTERESTING THING ABOUT FIGHTING MAGOLOR SOUL BUT THIS NOVEL DID.
I just...I can't even say that what we got in exchange was a plain and simple no frills description of the fight itself with no bells and whistles added because...it left stuff from the real fight OUT. Stuff the fans have picked out for years!
It upsets me a little that Kumazaki-shi brings up the fact that CROWNED is surely playing in the minds of the readers as they get to the chapter with the boss fight because CROWNED is, hands down, my favorite Kirby song. I've listened to it countless times. If that fight scene was supposed to capture the feelings listening to CROWNED evokes, then it failed.
Even if you don't take the harried violins to represent Magolor's inner voice, his confusion and conflict with his desires or his frantic attempts to wrestle himself back from the crown, then at the very least, there's the call back to “Green Greens” in the song - and the novel has no hint of nostalgia toward Dream Land, Popstar, or the group's adventure their during the fight. (Again, how could you NOT see CROWNED as being about Magolor's inner turmoil? I say this because Star Allies has a new mix of it to go along with playable, friendly Magolor and the whole damn tone of the song is different!!)
I'm just going to call in death of the author and say there is a reason that fans for 10 years have had a fairly unified view of that fight. It's directed in game like a tragic affair, but the novel writes it like a run of the mill shonen manga.
"We gotta stop that super tough bad guy from getting his way!"
It's unfair.
Magolor's will is completely absent from the fight. And yeah, he's kind of consumed by that point, but he’s treated as an object, not a character with feelings. The text doesn’t even allow us to sympathize with him!
There’s like, one line, when they come close. Describing that Magolor appears to be smiling and I’m reading it like, “Yes? Yes...??” and then it doesn’t even finish the thought. We’re not just given no emotion. Any emotion Magolor should be allowed to express is cut off. Just like that sentence.
Half the Soul fight is spent with them being worried about Magolor potentially stealing Kirby’s abilities to use against the group.
Like, really.......?
Again, back to taking stuff out, they remove the very explicit depiction in game of Kirby going out of his way to attack the crown and not Magolor. Because game Kirby just wants to get the thing off him to de-power him! The novel treats it as if it that clash is nothing more than a contest of power, one that Magolor loses.
Then, Kirby is described as striking him. HIM! The moment I read that, I knew I wouldn't like how the rest of the fight would go...
And they removed him shouting Kirby's name! It's not even a case of "Well, we don't know IF he called Kirby's name. It could just be a scream that kinda sounds like it." Sure. Okay. And I would buy that. But the sound he does make is absolutely his main story mode scream and not his Soul scream. This is despite them using his Soul form! I almost wonder if Tau and Poto took it upon themselves to draw Magolor Soul in there, because you would barely know it's Magolor Soul from description alone. There's one line about the eye. That's it.
...Sigh... While I'm throwing speculation against the wall, I can't help but feel like Magolor is NOT very high among Takase-sensei's favorite characters. Which is fine. Professionals are people too. Everyone has their biases. She seems pretty biased toward Meta Knight. But yeah, it would have been nice to have a more well-rounded Magolor in the Return to Dream Land novelization!
The thing is, Magolor is no saint. Which is wonderful! We (most of us?) love him for his sketchy comical villainy. (Stroke of UTTER brilliance to make him be the only character to ever ask for Microtransactions in Kirby.) But that depiction works better when there's at least a little bit of conflict there. Shadows are formed because there’s light. If Magolor has zero redeeming qualities and NOTHING good about him, he stops being a character altogether.
And we see all over the place that Magolor has his good parts in addition to his sketchy parts! Dream Collection, Kirby Clash, Star Allies.
This is official art!
This is also official! (Albeit, it’s merch and not story related.)
But the "Find Kirby" books were literally illustrated by the same sisters who illustrate the novels! Post-RtDL Magolor ADORES Kirby! He’s still weird and not always trustworthy, but HE CANONICALLY CARES ABOUT KIRBY!
I wish we could have seen the build up to that in this novel...
Sigh.
...But before I act like the RtDL novel is the worst thing that ever happened to Magolor, it's actually NOT all bad all the time. Yes, we never see him and Kirby forge a bond that is supposed to melt Magolor's heart and be the lead-in to him moving to Popstar, but there ARE a few moments that preserve the tragic conflict of friendship vs power that I always felt RtDL was going for.
For one, when Magolor and Kirby are alone together, right before the fight, Magolor offers to let Kirby help him rule. It's your standard villain speech, yes, but there's a certain earnestness to it. He only makes this offer when he's alone with Kirby and it's WHILE he's got the advantage. He makes the offer kinda mockingly, but that just goes back to Magolor's poor socialization skills. He wants to rule the galaxy, but he doesn't want to do it alone.
And when Kirby refuses? He gets...real quiet, like he's upset. And it's after this that he starts getting really mad at Kirby. Like until now, it was all fun and games. I'm reminded about the only parts I like about (previous) Novel Magolor, which is that he's so messed up in the head, he doesn't (yet) see the difference between play-fighting with Kirby and actually fighting with him.
It makes a delicious amount of sense for someone who grew up on a planet full of constant danger...
"What do you mean daily life-and-death struggles aren't fun? That's, like, literally what we do for entertainment on Halcandra. Speaking of, do you want to play 'Don't burn to death in the lava?' I'm really good at that one!"
Also, the first thing Magolor Soul does is attempt to summon a group of enemies to attack Kirby. Just like Grand Doomer did. But...what comes out are Meta Knight, Bandanna Waddle Dee, and King Dedede instead. Kirby was exhausted. It would have been too easy to defeat him at this point. And Magolor Soul's first act is to send...his friends...? Not more enemies? He does so later, but by that point, the gang is already feeling refreshed!
It may be selfish of me, but seeing as how the novel DOESN'T attribute this act to the Lor (which would have been very easy to do) I like to think it was the last act of the real Magolor, before he was fully submerged, to send Kirby's friends to him. One sole act of goodness that swayed the fight in Kirby's favor.
And speaking of the fight, when the novel goes into a description of how Kirby and the others are winning, they attribute this to teamwork while explicitly spelling out that Magolor is alone. He isn't just the lying wizard, but the lonely wizard. (...Annnnnd an "evil" wizard. A description I could do without. In a series with Dark Matter and Zero and lots of worse stuff, I was a little tired at the number of times Takase-sensei describes EVERYTHING about Magolor as evil. His "evil" influence. "Evil" magic. "Evil" energy. He was a liar! Not satan, okay?!
...Maybe I should be thankful Marx hasn't appeared in a novel yet. I really don't think I want to have to argue against "...But in the novels, Marx is canonically described as an evil psychopath!" constantly. Man, is this what Dedede fans feel like when people keep calling him Kirby's arch-nemesis...?)
Anyway, while the narration is not kind to Magolor in the slightest, there is maybe a hint that he “needed” the darkness beat out of him in that fight?? That maybe he could turn around and be good later, but not right now? He had too much anger to process and it wasn't something that could be done without literally getting it thrashed out of him...?? There ARE phrases in there like, "all the darkness that had been eating at him was destroyed." Soooo...
Also, while I regret that we got no bonding moment between Magolor and Kirby, as soon as Magolor is defeated, Kirby does RUN to check on him. And this is while he's still got the crown on. They had a big, long, tough fight, but there is something in Kirby that inspires him to see if Magolor is still okay.
Then there's the conversation that happens after Magolor disappears. Dedede, who earlier said Magolor deserved what happened to him, speaks with a kind of solemnity when he wonders if Magolor could have died, before deciding he couldn't have. And while Kirby says he'll kick Magolor out if he shows his tail on Popstar again, he says this while laughing. The implication is not that he never wants to see Magolor again, it's that he doesn't want Magolor to come back with another tricky scheme. He's had enough of those, he says.
I'm seriously conflicted about this scene though, because even if this novel is not directly in continuity with the Tsubasa Bunko novels, it feels like it was added in there so as to not contradict Magolor's first Tsubasa Bunko appearance.
It's not a choice I would have made, tbh. (And I wonder what we could have gotten there if they didn’t feel the need to retroactively justify Kirby’s reaction to Magolor in an unconnected book...Sigh...) But hey, the long and short of the scene is that no one on the team sees Magolor as an irredeemable asshole, so there's no reason we should either.
One more scene I want to cover before I end this, because it's getting too long.(I've been talking about the novel more than I've been translating it, and I am really falling behind on RL stuff, so Ch.4 may end up being the week after this, and not this Sunday after all...!)
But I want to touch on what would seem to be one of Magolor's "worst" scenes - the one where he "gaslights" Waddle Dee for his story about hearing the Lor speak to him and then speaks threateningly to the Lor in private. Now, that brief summary alone makes him out to be a total monster, right? But the way that scene plays out, I don't think it's quite that simple...
Because the scene where he's alone with the Lor is played with a kind of weird melancholy. Yes, he tries to hurry the gang out of the ship and tells Bandanna Waddle Dee what he heard must have been his imagination and that ships talking is totally strange! But...the moment he's alone, he says to the Lor...
"...Could it REALLY have been you.....?" as if he really doesn't believe the ship could have talked. And the reason for this is because it has NEVER once talked to him. Not even.once. Not even when he woke it up and repaired it from the depths of the volcano. After questioning the Lor, he tries to assert his dominance over it, but not with a harsh, abusive "I AM your master" but with a frail, self-conscious sounding, "...I'm your master, you know... Me, Magolor..."
Magolor is upset and he feels slighted. Obviously, he had aims on the crown the moment he first found the Lor, which is probably WHY it never spoke to him...
I get the feeling that Magolor just doesn't see what's wrong with him getting the things he wants. And yet, everywhere he goes, he's surrounded by people who are judging his choices and shutting him down - but no one is informing him exactly what's wrong, as if he should just know instinctively.
And yes - he probably SHOULD know very basic things like "Don't lie," "Don't manipulate people," "Be good to your friends" but again, Magolor is very likely to have been someone who grew up somewhat isolated on a hell planet. Did he have anyone to teach him better?
I kind of wish they’d given us confirmation on that, but at this point, I have to cycle back around to Kumazaki-shi's response up top and say that is MY “answer” for Magolor's behavior. The Magolor that I love. Villainous, yes, megalomaniacal, yes, but weirdly sympathetic.
If you also like Magolor, a presently-redeemed character with good sides, ones who cares about his newly made friends despite the mix-up they got into in the past, then surely you’ve done some thinking about his reasons and his desires, right?
Let those be your canon.
They are just as valid as the novel.
Idk if ur still taking requests but I need more Sanzu and Kazutora general headcanons dhsnnwkwj
- yess bby, when you sent this is in was still taking requests dw !! and here you go ♡ some more sanzu content, especially after yesterday's chapter omgkdks
Sanzu and Kazutora general headcanons
characters: sanzu + kazutora hanemiya
genre: fluff
warnings: none
Sanzu
so we all now know that sanzu is a loyal person, but can also easily slip into lying to others. and he's good at keeping this facade for as long as he deems necessary
he's most likely someone who won't trust another easily, and as a result, won't feel much remorse if he must go against someone he seemingly knows or gets along with
it's probably a mechanism he goes with to prevent any feelings to get involved when it came down to facing the truth of the situation
it just makes things easier at the end of the day
much unlike the other toman members, this won't affect the way he acts. he's a cocky person, and will display a smile as often as he likes
he doesn't let stupid little gang troubles get to him, and will keep himself by the sidelines as long as he can before jumping into any situation
it's not recommendable to get on the wrong side of this guy. he will act as an ally, if you happen to be on the same side of the coin as he is, or show you no interest right before he makes a move that will undoubtedly leave you losing the game
he's stealthy, that's probably the most fitting word for him
now, to weave all of this into his interactions with a possible s/o, it's a complicated situation
he will express his liking towards you in an openly manner, in the sense that he will always praise you for any little thing you'd do, if you worked with him, or simply linger around you more than he'd do with others
but don't expect him to start confessing out of the blue
no, he will take his time
he doesn't need you to turn on him upon learning that he held a certain fondness towards you and use it against him, so he'd make sure you weren't involved with any sketchy outsiders first
this could take him months, so if you also happen to grow a feeling towards him, don't expect to get anything out of him other than the frequent compliments
when he eventually convinces himself that you pose no threat, he will, of course, approach you
not a single sense of nerves when he told you about it, and it would pay off when he received a mutual response
when the two of you establish the relationship, his attitude around you won't change much if you are around others
he will continue to hold his doubts surrounding certain members, so he wouldn't want to leave you open as a possible target for them to use against him
even less if you were a simple citizen, with no ties with the delinquent world
behind closed doors, this matter would change. sanzu's not an overly affectionate person, but if you happen to want a hug here and there, he will warm up enough for that
that's at the beginning of the relationship. you'll have to leave this guy some space before he starts approaching you for any sort of closeness
he loves you, that will be of certainty after all the deliberations he had had with himself before confessing
he was just always wary of himself in case he did or said something out of pocket and potentially scare you off
it's not always simple to drop the rigid act he'd put up all the time, so you'd have to slowly ease him out of it, reassuring him that you trusted him to not cause you any harm
when he's finally sure enough of himself, he will show a much more vulnerable side of him to you. of course
his cockiness will have always been there whenever you got together, but it will be a nice change to have a sleeping sanzu laying on you instead of the attentive toman member everyone else would see
you will be the one - though, he may not openly tell you the - that will slowly bring him out of his insecurities
the way you'd hold his face whenever you cooed at him would only give you a smile as response
but in reality, he felt over the moon to know that someone could ever look at him with such a loving gaze
it would make him realise just how much the wait had been worth it to be with you
expressing the same love to you will be an easier task as time goes on, and before you know it, you'd be greeted with a kiss on your forehead whenever he'd show up at your place
for every little thing he'd do with affection, know that he would be trying his best to be able to do so
he was still learning, but he was more than willing to put his elbows into it if it meant bringing that bright smile onto your face that he loved so much
Kazutora
the initial appearance of kazutora is that of a relatively serene person. he never has been one to stand tall like other delinquents, it just isn't how he is.
unfortunately, this would sometimes lead him to believe he was weaker than the others. whenever he's alone, his thoughts will almost drown him with such negativity, but it would all blow over once he was confronted by anyone
it's a tricky situation. on one hand, he doesn't really want to come off as a bulky, almost scary guy, like the eldest shiba sibling from the black dragons
but he figured if he did, then perhaps he wouldn't be so undervalued
he's got one hell of a past record that he carries on his shoulders, but he's far from eager to get over it
he knows the weight that his previous actions hold, and he wasn't going to run away from them in a cowardly manner
kazutora is someone that won't back down from anything, as much as that would throw him into unlucky situations
he also has a habit of feeling remorse towards those who most definitely don't deserve it
because, at the end of the day, he has a big heart
for better or for worse, and despite the countless times this has been used against him, he doesn't see him capable of showing true hatred; it would simply be a facade he'd put on to ensure he wasn't seen as weak
this is a key point to have in mind when he finds someone he holds a certain liking towards
unlike others that would try their best to not let themselves look vulnerable, he would actually approach you more often and try to get to know you better
the people around him would notice his increase of kindness whenever you were around, and they'd just let him go with it
he didn't want to come past as someone unapproachable, especially to the person who he had found an interest in
he will be the one to, eventually, confess
it would take him some self convincing to push himself and tell you, because he's afraid of rejection, in any situation
when you tell him that you feel the same way, this guy will be on cloud 9, and won't be able to hold back the enthusiastic smile on his face as he felt a rush of joy
he's really just in need of some love
know that most members will be aware that the two of you were now in a relationship
the way kazutora would never be far from your side will be a clear sign, and the occasional hand holding with be the cherry on top
when dating this sweetheart, know that you won't go without enough affection
hugs, kisses, pecks and wrapping his arms around you will just be some of the things he'll do, even in public
he loves being around you, so he'd make the most of it and intertwined his fingers with yours, even if he was talking with other members
he's shameless, really. and even less so when the two of you are alone
he will always slide you over into his arms if you were spending the afternoon on your couch or bed
and he just wouldn't move for a good hour, as much as you'd try to wriggle out from his hold
showering you with kisses even if you were working on something. he'd always be lingering nearby if he happened to catch you finishing up on some business
but, as much as he loves the feeling of holding you, it will also be of much comfort for him to know that you won't see him as weak or even unmanly when doing so
when he tells you about his insecurity, be sure you reassure him that he's far from a weak person
with time, he will start to believe more in this fact, with the help of your comforting words and caring touches
know that he will consider you a very important person in his life, and therefore, will be very cautious whenever it came to topics related to the gangs
since everyone knew about the two of you, he would always try and accompany you if ever you had to go out alone at night
aside from this, kazutora is someone who will be very calm whenever the two of you go out
on dates, for example, it won't even seem like your boyfriend was actually involved with delinquents
his smile will be so bright, and he would be himself around you, taking a rest from his usual persona around the members
truly, it's a wonderful sight to see him enjoy a regular life, and you'd always try and get him to spend time like this as often as he could
happy kazutora is by far the best kazutora
Soulmate AU, part 1
masterpost next
Huge thanks to the Maribat Fandom tumblr chat, without whom I wouldn’t have made this blog or posted this piece (or probably written this at all given that it’s a maribat fanfic)! @the-fusionist and @rebecarojas07 specifically for encouraging me!
*****
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
Damian is a week shy of fourteen the day the names appear inked on people’s skin, when he wakes up to ink that doesn’t wash off and the news reports that all around the world people have woken up to find the same phenomenon.
The world accepts it readily enough.
Soulmates.
There are tales of it happening before, every mythology and history and folklore delved into and the proof brought forward, but no one actually can say what triggered it, or why now.
In Paris, Marinette wakes up the day after she becomes Ladybug, a dark inked name of her own blooming vivid across her skin.
“It’s because you’re a true holder, Marinette,” Tikki says almost bouncing in midair. “People can use the Miraculous without being as in tune with them, but when we land in the hands of someone who is not just attuned, but truly meant for us- interesting things happen! Especially with the Ladybug Miraculous! These markings reveal who your Soulmate is!”
Her eyes still skim over the writing, and she has to hold in her almost immediate disappointment when she doesn’t see the two swirling A’s she wanted.
“Damian Wayne.”
*****
Marinette doesn’t let it get to her most days, the fact that the name across the front of her shoulder and the name of the boy she feels she’s lost her heart to aren’t the same.
Adrien, for his part, says nothing about what name he has, and it isn’t visible for anyone to find out.
Marinette keeps her designs modest in the neckline, always layers with her favorite jacket and does not say hers either.
The world divides into those who show them proudly, who build forums and websites and apps where people try desperately to connect with their soulmate, and those who decide that to seek it out would ruin the- destiny of it all.
Marinette doesn’t even google him.
She doesn’t want to think about destiny any more than she has to.
*****
Damian keeps it hidden from his family. Grayson has Kori’s name running down his neck, and though they don’t show them off, he’s aware that Todd and Drake have their own as well. Father’s got “Selina Kyle” trailing from his wrist down to the side of his left thumb.
Grayson asks him, once. He shuts it down immediately, and he doesn’t get asked again.
*****
Lila claims her soulmate is someone rich, reclusive, and far away. She doesn’t give details about who they are, but she can tell you millions of stories about how they met as children, grew up knowing each other, how he’d begged for her to stay by his side but she had sighed and told him she must be free to live her own life! And how he waited for her even now to return once she’d graduated and they could marry and be fabulously wealthy and beautiful and happy together.
The class fawns over it. Each time the elusive soulmate is mentioned, Marinette locks eyes with Adrien and Chloé, unable to voice her annoyance but perfectly able to share it with them.
Alya sneers under her breath sometimes, when Lila is being particularly mouthy with her lies, that Marinette has always refused to show or even talk about her mark. That perhaps she doesn’t have one at all.
Marinette doesn’t ever respond.
Adrien tried his hardest to shut them down when they start moving in towards her or Chloé like sharks. She’d lost her crush on him when he’d told her to let Lila lie, that she wasn’t hurting anyone. And then Chloé had knocked on her door one day and- apologized.
Marinette had accepted.
And then when Chloé found out that Adrien not only knew but had actually allowed Lila to continue spinning her lies, she’d taken the boy to task and explained very clearly that Lila could not be treated the same way as his Father, where staying quiet and giving in was the only way to weather his unsavory bad moods. And while his Father demanded he still associate with Lila and keep her placated, that shouldn’t stop him from standing up and doing something when she started actively going after people the way she’d gone for Marinette.
He’d very quickly apologized to Marinette and started, if not scolding Lila when she targeted Marinette, at least trying to guide her and the rest of the class away from any interactions they might have initiated because of Lila’s words.
And now, even if the hours spent at Francois DuPont were chilly and quietly isolated for the three of them, they could meet up at the bakery for lunch, and more often than not now, they would spend evenings hanging out in either Chloé’s room or Marinette’s and it almost made up for it.
*****
Damian has been dead before.
He watches a girl in his class start screaming as the name splayed across her palm withers, it almost looks like it dissolved into her veins, the ink shrinking and bleeding into normal, unmarked skin.
He goes home and he looks at the long curling script that circles the right side of his chest, sweeping across his ribs. Marinette Dupain-Cheng exists somewhere and he wonders if dying once is enough that his name never showed up on her.
He searches the last names. He finds a small but well known and very well loved bakery in Paris, France, with mentions of the owners, Tom and Sabine, and one daughter.
He closes it out.
*****
Marinette turns 16.
It’s not momentous, as she once thought it would be. It’s another day facing the cold sneers of her classmates, catching Adrien and Chloé’s eyes and waiting until the end of the day when she can go home where her parents will have a cake waiting for her, Chloé, Adrien, Kagami, and Luka over, visits from Nadja and Manon, and hopefully some calls from her great uncle Wang and her pseudo uncle Jagged with Penny. Birthdays in this class used to be extravagant, and they still are- for everyone who Lila allowed it.
But Marinette’s birthday will be a quiet affair, at home with her family and her truest friends, her team, and she can’t help but prefer that.
*****
Damian turns 17. Dick marries Kori. Father and Catwoman continue their game of cat and mouse (who is what in this scenario?) and Todd keeps leaving and coming back, and Drake says nothing but acts as if he still knows everything. Damian is, in almost all ways, more capable than most of the old men that do business with Wayne Enterprises and he still has to sit through school and act like birthday parties matter or mean anything to him.
(They do. They do. He can count on one hand how many birthdays he’s ever actually celebrated.)
He’d like to know why he feels so unsatisfied.
*****
Ms. Bustier calls her aside when they break for lunch.
“Marinette,” she begins, and Marinette sighs internally, bracing for another round of upbeat admonishments.
“As class representative, I need you to start staying after class with me for the next few weeks at least- perhaps we can start tomorrow. The submission you made to the Wayne Enterprises Community Awareness and Support Program won, and we have to start planning for the trip in July.”
Marinette stops short. “Wait, trip?”
Mme. Bustier straightens her papers and selects one, handing it to Marinette. On it is a very formal letter from representatives of Wayne Enterprises, congratulating her and her class on their community outreach and outlining the award money they have been offered to plan their trip to visit Wayne Enterprises in person.
Marinette struggles not to sit there with her jaw dropped to the floor. “I didn’t realize there was any actual- reward. I thought it was just an award or recognition?”
Mme. Bustier gives her the smile she used to give her on a daily basis, back when Marinette had cared about making her teacher that happy with every success their class had. “Well, then it’s just as happy a surprise for you as for the rest of the class! I’ll send a note home with you tonight explaining why you’ll be staying after school for the foreseeable future. I won’t ever keep you longer than an hour.”
Marinette knew that would not be true, but it wasn’t as if she couldn’t make up an excuse to leave when necessary. “Yes. We’ll want the trip to be planned perfectly, especially if we’re going to Gotham. Thank you, Mme. Bustier!”
She skips out to lunch, runs across the street to the bakery to meet her friends and tells them the news.
*****
Damian thinks about her often, even if he doesn’t want to. Marinette Dupain-Cheng, the baker’s daughter somewhere in Paris, presumably, who may or may not have his name somewhere scrawled on her body.
He doesn’t search anything about her again. Even that single search that led him to her parents’ patisserie was risky.
Jon can tell him everything he wants to about the happiness between himself and his soulmate. His siblings can tiptoe around the subject, happy themselves and never bringing it up to him again. He watches people at school, wondering which of the couples are bound by the words inked into their skin and which are the ones who decided to forego fate. It takes him a very long time to figure out that despite himself, despite his brothers and his allies and his few friends, he is lonely.
*****
Seven weeks before the trip to Gotham, Marinette’s mother finds the Miracle Box.
Marinette hasn’t had Master Fu to guide her in a very long time. She is, in name and deed, the true Guardian of the Miraculous now.
Marinette breaks down on her mother’s shoulder for the first time in four years, since Hawkmoth started terrorizing Paris. Sabine, terrified and proud and angry, soothes her daughter, holds her and runs her hand over her hair, and asks her daughter what she can do.
Marinette has an idea.
It’s here, Virgil’s FabFiveFeb
A nice little bit of Virg fluff for @gumnut-logic
"I think he'd like someone that has an interest in creative pursuits," Gordon mused, poking one of the boxes to tick it.
"And someone that likes to go for walks, you know what he's like for wanting to wander and take in the scenery, maybe even snap some pictures to paint later," Scott added, touching another box to tick it.
"More of a home body than an adventurer, he gets enough of that with work," Gordon added it to the list. "And they definitely have to believe that family is important, he can't have someone that won't understand his commitments."
"OK, next, all about him," Scott scrolled down to the next section. "His interests…"
"Classical music, obviously."
"Enjoys visiting art galleries and concerts."
"And eating out."
"Don't we all?"
Gordon nodded at that, there was nothing they liked more than picking up some tasty food.
"Ideal date? What's that movie he likes? The one with the lake house?"
"Oh, I know the one you mean, with the…the…" Scott's brain failed to make the connection, romantic comedies were not his thing, that was what Virgil watched with Selene, not him.
"Doesn't matter," Gordon assured him, brushing it aside. "He liked the date so I'm putting it down. A relaxed stroll along a lake side at sunset," he murmured to himself as he quickly typed it out.
"That's the one," Scott nodded. "He-"
"Allie! Have you seen Scott?" The sound of Virgil's voice floating up from the kitchen made them both jump guilty.
"I think he's in the lounge," Alan shouted back.
"Shit!"
"He's coming!"
"Quick, submit it, submit it!" Gordon smacked at the submit button, growling in frustration when a flashing red 'incomplete field' warning mocked them.
The sound of steel capped boots thumping up stairs spurred them on.
"Just tick anything!" Scott yelped, fingers flying as he randomly poked boxes in between Gordon whacking the submit button like it had personally offended him.
"Yes!" Gordon sighed as the 'congratulations' sign appeared in green. "Done!"
Scott just had time to hit the x and pull up a report before Virgil strolled his way in.
"What are you two doing?" he asked suspiciously, stopping dead in the doorway when he was greeted by the sight of the two brothers least likely to be discussing a report seeming to be doing just that.
"Nothing!" Gordon yelped just as Scott yelled "Reports" which was definitely upping the suspicion levels. He didn't believe them.
"I don't believe you," Virgil told them firmly, attempting to give them the kind of 'don't lie to me' eyebrow raise that Selene or John managed to pull off but knew he had failed. Damn the fact that he was the nice one and they both knew that any and all threats he might issue would go unfulfilled.
"You doubt me?" Scott gasped in mock outrage. "Me? Your big brother? The one that always has your back?"
"And me, your wingman? The one that always fixes your hairdryer fuse?"
"One time Gordon! That was one time! And it wasn't my hairdryer!"
"I don't know, you bought it, you keep it in your bathroom and you warned us all that we couldn't borrow it on pain of death, so that evidence all points to it being your hairdryer…"
"I won't stay here to be insulted," Virgil sniffed indignantly, "I'm gonna go find Kayo and see if she'll help me with the inlet manifold, at least she can take instructions and won't lie to me."
They watched him stomp away in a huff, breathing a sigh of relief when the sound of his boots faded into nothing.
"Damn, that was close," Scott gulped, clicking back onto the dating website to check it had worked. His eyes widened when he looked at the screen.
"What? What's wrong?"
"He's got three inboxes already."
"Seriously? Already, it's been what, five minutes?"
"Yep."
"We’re gonna be spoilt for choice."
"I guess that just means we have more chance of picking him a good one, he needs to get out more."
"He'll thank us for it in the end."
***
"I don't understand, why do I have to dress up?" Virgil groaned. "I'm tired, I've had a long day, why do we need to go to the mainland just to pick up pizza?"
Gordon glanced at Scott for help. None was forthcoming. He nudged him for emphasis.
"Fine," Scott sighed, admitting defeat. Honesty was always the best policy anyway. "We arranged a blind date for you."
"You did what?" Virgil exploded. "Why the hell would you do that?"
"We thought you needed to get out more," Gordon shrugged. "We were trying to help."
"I don't need your help, I didn't ask for it."
"Not like you were going to meet anyone on your own, was it?" Gordon continued to needle.
"John did! So did Scott. I am perfectly capable of getting my own dates."
"John is an enigma that none of us understand and Cat's my ex, I was recycling, that doesn't count."
"Do not let her hear you say that," Gordon laughed.
"My point still stands," Scott insisted waving away the worry about his girlfriend, "we don't have a normal job or the chance to socialise much, and unless fate decides to be nice and throw someone at you like it did for John or you have an ex hidden away somewhere, you can't use us as an example."
"You don't want to let her down, do you?" Gordon tossed in, knowing that his softie brother would feel guilty as hell if he upset anyone. "How would you feel if you got dumped before you'd even met the person?"
Virgil wanted to argue the point some more, but honesty and his vow never to lie to himself stopped him. They did have a point, a small one, but still pointy and therefore he was unable to ignore their logic. He decided to give in, although he refused to do so gracefully or with any forgiveness of their plotting. Plus, they were right, he wouldn't want to be responsible for anyone feeling like they weren't good enough in any way, shape or form.
"Looks like I don't have much of a choice…" he started only to be interrupted by the victorious cheers of his brothers. "Do you have a picture of her?"
"Nope," Scott grinned. "We signed you up with that new site where pictures aren't allowed, you pick based on shared interests and compatibility, not looks."
"That's…actually a nice idea," Virgil acknowledged reluctantly. He wasn't one to judge people on looks, he cared more about personality and morals.
"See, we knew you'd approve," Gordon grinned, slapping him on the back.
"I didn't say I approved of this-"
"Come on, hurry up, you don't want to be late for your date!"
***
Virgil waited nervously on the picnic bench, clutching the single sunflower Scott had thrust at him like it was a weapon, ready to fend off anything if his blind date turned out to be some kind of psycho.
They couldn't be too careful, they were far too used to people trying to find out details about them or to trick them in some way. No one was ever as they seemed.
Scott had assured him that they hadn't used his real name and that no one would associate it with him but he couldn't help the little nagging doubts that gnawed away at the back of his mind.
Plus he still hadn't forgiven them for pulling this stunt on him. Did they really think he was that bad at dating that he needed such help? He wasn't bad at dating, he got plenty of offers for a hook up, they all did. Well, not John but he was hardly ever out on rescues and Selene was common knowledge now but, to the rest of the world, him and his "single" brothers were all fair game.
Butt gropes and comments about their hard muscles were a common occurrence, so much so that he often felt like a piece of meat being squished and tested before purchase. Another reason why he rarely managed to meet anyone that he could actually see himself wanting to date.
Maybe their idea, while badly executed and heavy in trickery and taken liberties, hadn't come from a bad place. He'd worried the whole way to the meeting spot that they might have picked the worst candidate they could, but he firmly forced the thought out of his head. His brothers might like to indulge in mutual pranking and to push the limits sometimes but they would never do anything to hurt or embarrass someone, especially not a stranger. The thought had calmed him down enough that he hadn't had to make use of Two's on board bathroom facilities for an emergency freshen up because he'd stress sweated through the nice shirt and jacket they had forced him into.
He'd managed to relax a little but, now that he was sitting here alone, waiting and looking out for someone he had no clue about, he was starting to worry again.
Seeing an abandoned pen on the picnic table he snatched a few napkins from the dispenser and let his eyes roam the scenery.
It really was a gorgeous place, something often referred to as a little slice of heaven in the city. The urban park, man made in the center of the mass of concrete and steel, sported a carefully constructed lake that was home to a teeming ecosystem of endangered species that exhaustive conservation efforts had made possible.
The sun was just beginning to lower towards the horizon, painting the sky and the surface of the lake with the most beautiful colours. Virgil's fingers itched to paint them but he settled for snapping a couple of pictures on his phone.
Trees of all types surrounded the lake, creating an attractive backdrop to the whole scene and before he even realised he was doing it he was deep in concentration as he sketched the lake area on the napkin.
The process was calming, helping to soothe his nerves and slow his thumping heart, allowing him to stop and breathe for a second, helping him to resist the urge to cut and run.
"Are you Virgil Grant? You have a sunflower."
The voice behind him made him jump and drop his pen.
"Yes, yes I am," he admitted as he turned around to face his date.
***
"So, how did it go?" Scott asked when they arrived to pick Virgil up, less than half an hour after he'd text for a ride. "Did you have a good time?"
"I had a great time," Virgil smiled.
"You were gone a long time," Gordon grinned, nudging his older brother playfully with his elbow. "Did you go back to her place or something?"
"Yeah, we did."
"You did? You dog you!" Gordon leered with an exaggerated wink. Virgil just smiled, taking the teasing with his usual good grace.
"You gonna see her again?" Scott asked, pleased that their plan seemed to have gone so well.
Virgil nodded. "I told her I'd drop in as soon as I'm free."
"Come on, give us all the juicy details, tell us all about, Emma, wasn't it?" Gordon pushed, desperate for gossip.
"Nothing much to tell," Virgil shrugged. "She's sweet, we had a nice time hanging out, she gave me her number."
"That's it? That's all you can tell us?" Gordon groaned, disappointment evident in his voice.
"No, that's all I'm going to tell you," Virgil corrected. "You've interfered in my private life enough already, thank you."
"Oh, come on, Virg," Scott pleaded. But the big guy wouldn't budge, staying smugly silent the entire journey home.
Gordon and Scott had given up by the time they eased the little jet back into the hangar, going off to do their own thing, hopefully to remove his dating profile, leaving Virgil alone.
Selene and John were cuddled up together on one of the couches, watching something on the holoscreen when he made his way into the lounge.
He hadn't meant to disturb them, especially when they were actually getting some time alone for once, and was about to make his excuses but Selene had other ideas. She patted the couch beside her, shifting over to make room for him.
He accepted the offer, sitting down and getting comfortable. He didn't know what they were watching, possibly some kind of documentary.
"Cookie?" he offered, pulling a baggie of what looked to be pretty decent cookies out of his jacket pocket.
Selene glanced up from the screen, looking first at the bag of cookies and then at Virgil, her eyes widening in surprise.
"You're all dressed up."
This got John's attention as he reached for a cookie. "Have you been somewhere?"
Selene selected a cookie and took a big bite. "Oh, damn, these are so good, where did you get them?"
"My date made them for me," Virgil grinned, consuming almost half a cookie in one bite.
"Wait, wait, back up, date?" Selene actually paused the documentary, something about William Shakespeare by the looks of it.
"You had a date? That wasn't on the calendar?" John frowned. "Were they cleared by security?"
"The romance is strong in this family," Selene drawled, rolling her eyes.
"Scott and Gordon decided that signing me up to dating sites is their new hobby," Virgil sighed.
"They arrange the date? What were they like? Did you have a good time? Witchy needs details," Selene gently shoved John's face away from her as he chewed loudly in her ear and leant closer to Virgil.
"We actually had a nice time. Emma, my date, is a local, lived there all her life. She's been a bit lonely so her friend set her up on the site. We wandered around a lake for a bit and then we went back to her place."
"Awww, so romantic," Selene sighed dreamily before mock glaring at her husband. "Why don't you take me on dates any more?"
"Because we only got back off our honeymoon a few weeks ago and we live on an island?"
"No excuse."
"Dinner on the mainland next week?"
"Thought you'd never ask," she stole a quick kiss as he rolled his eyes in defeat. "Got any pictures?"
"Of the restaurant? Are you needing to inspect my reservation making skills now?"
"I was talking to Virgil."
"Oh, then carry on."
"Virg, pictures?"
"I did take one, yes," he pulled out his phone, scrolled through for a couple of seconds then turned the phone to show them the screen. "I took a selfie of us at the lake."
Selene and John blinked, unsure if they were seeing the right picture.
"Erm… not to be a judgey judgerson or anything but…" Selene trailed off.
"But she has to be older than Grandma," John finished for her, blunt and to the point as always.
They both looked at the picture again, showing a goofily grinning Virgil next to a sweet older lady, her blue rinsed hair set in a helmet of curls, her half moon glasses perched on her nose.
"Again, not with the judging, you do you, but does she have to watch her heart? She needs to be careful if she's going out picking up handsome young men."
"Stop, please stop," Virgil groaned. "She didn't know how old I was. Gordon and Scott set it up and apparently they somehow, and I choose to believe it was unintentional, managed to upload my profile to the over 60s side."
"And you didn't correct her?" John had to ask. He knew his brother was the nice one of the family but that was a little ridiculous.
"Of course I did, but we were there and she hadn't been out in a few weeks. Her grandson moved away for work and her husband died a few years ago so I bought her dinner and we had a nice walk around the park. She wasn't actually looking for a romantic date, she just wanted a companion, someone to chat to, go for a walk with and maybe see an exhibition or two. Her friend at the widows club set it up for her."
"So you were both set up by others?"
"Yep. She's a really nice lady."
"And that walk around the park turned into cookies at her place?" John's fingers snuck into the bag again to take another.
"And banana bread. She mentioned that she was going to hire a handyman to fix her sink because her daughter was too busy and she didn't have any help now."
"Ahhh," Selene could see exactly where this was going.
"And so I offered to unblock her sink for her."
"Of course you did," John sighed, hiding his smile against Selene's shoulder.
"And while I was there I put up some new shelves for her and took her trash cans out to the kerb and retuned her TV. She made me cookies to say thank you."
"She sounds lovely," Selene cooed, already in love with the thought of her. She could take or leave it when it came to little kids, usually leave if she was being honest, but she was a complete suckee when it came to the elderly.
"She is, smart too. I complimented some of the paintings she had on her walls and she told me she'd painted them, her and her husband met at art school and used to go on vacation to different countries to visit galleries and take classes. I showed her a few pictures of some of my pieces and it turned out she'd seen one of mine in a gallery in New York, you know that one of the Sphinx I did from that picture I took after that rescue?"
"Do I take it that our darling brothers don't know any of this?"
"Nope," Virgil grinned. "I'm letting them stay curious, they asked me all sorts of questions on the way back but I stayed quiet. I'll tell them eventually, once all the cookies are gone." He picked another out of the rapidly depleting stash.
"I have never heard a more Virgil story in my entire life," Selene laughed, shaking her head. "So when are you seeing her again?"
"Gonna try and visit next week to mow her lawn," Virgil admitted, looking somewhat sheepish.
"Hey, no," Selene grabbed his hand, squeezing it tight. "No looking embarrassed. You're amazing, it's a totally you thing to go on a date, not get what you were expecting and still come away with an old lady best friend and having had a great time. That's one of the many reasons I love you, because you're just so you."
"She's right," John added, patting his brother's shoulder. "One thing I've learnt the last few years is that you shouldn't make excuses for who you are or try to change. Don't belittle the fact that you have probably made her happier than she has been in months just by giving her some time and treating her with respect. Don't undervalue that."
"Yeah," Virgil acknowledged. "I know I did the right thing, it doesn't hurt to help someone and I had fun too."
"And that's all that matters," Selene said, patting his hand one last time before she let it go.
"Yep," he smiled, settling back against the cushions, munching on his cookie, his cheeks bulging like a hamster's, muffling his words. "That and the fact that her granddaughter is a nurse and she's going to introduce us next month."
Bayverse TMNT: a love confessing wedding (Leo x reader)
Summary: you meet the turtles and Leo falls in love with you, but never told you how he felt. you tell him the exciting news of the engagement, and he finds out who the groom really is. how will Leo stop all this and confess his love to you? read and find out!
Leo was in his room sharpening his katanas. he always thought about you every single day. he really wanted to tell you that he really loves you. the only problem is, he couldn’t say it due to the feeling of being rejected. he continues to sharpen his weapons, until he got a text. it was from you. it said: “could you meet me by an ally way? I have something exciting to tell you.” he smiles and heads out. as he got to the place you told him to meet you at, you finally made it and he smiles. “hey (Y/N). did April take you here?” you shook your head, and replied. “no. I walked. but I’m glad you came though.” you smiled and he smiles back. “um...so. you said you wanted to tell me something. what is it?” he was hoping it was about you telling him that you like him and such, but instead he got a different response that made him frown a bit. “I’m getting married. it’s next month. I’m sorry if I didn’t tell you earlier a year back. my fiance and I already have everything ready for it. it’s taking place in a large local church.” Leo stares at you frowning a bit with disappointment, but eventually shook it off acting like he is happy to hear about it. “oh! um...that’s wonderful to hear. I’m so happy for you.” he smiles a bit and you look at him smiling. “yeah. here’s the invitation if you’d like to come.” you give to him, and he nods thanking you. “well. I better go. I have ceremony practice to go to.” you say goodbye to him, but Leo stops you for a split minute, and he takes out a gift. “here. I made this for you. it’s not much, but....it’s something for you to remember me by.” you unwrap the gift which was wrapped in old newspapers, it reveals a rose origami. you stare at it, and you smile at him giving his gentle hug. “ thank you Leo. It’s lovely.” he hugs back and he feels like he doesn’t wanna let go. but still. he was still too nervous to tell you. you both say goodbye to each other, and Leo heads back home to the lair. his brothers notice how disappointed he looked. he sits down and sighs shaking his head thinking to himself that he should’ve told his confession earlier. but it may be a bit too late for that now. a month has finally passed, and it was the wedding day. Leo was putting on a tux that is big enough for him to fit into. it was a good thing Casey and April got the tuxedos for him and his brothers to wear. April walks up to him and notices how unhappy he looked. “Leo. are you okay? you should be happy about (Y/N)’s big day.” he sighs and responds. “I know I’m supposed to but....I just....I can’t...I love her...she means everything to me. I should’ve told her how I felt earlier before any of this.” April pats him on the arm and looks up at him. “you’ll find someone one day. don’t worry.” Leo nods, and everyone leaves to head to the church. Leo waits for April and Casey while his brothers wait in the shell raiser, until he hears a voice from a nearby window. he looks into it, and it was the groom yelling on the phone talking to someone. “I will make sure the wedding is a success. once I marry this woman, nothing will stop us! it’s not just for the money, but to also kill those damn turtles! I will not have our men blow their cover!!....No! I will not let them escape! I promise you that!.....yes, yes! I will take out the leader first! he is the most obvious easy target. okay look. the wedding is starting in a few minutes. I’ll see you after the ceremony.” the groom hangs up, Leo was in complete shock. this guy is up to no good. he rushes back to the shell raiser where his brothers are at. he takes off his tux and grabs his katanas. “guys! head on home! there will be no ceremony! I gotta stop this thing!!” his brothers were confused. but Leo didn’t want any long arguments about it for right now. “no more talking! I got a wedding to stop!” the wedding finally starts, and the priest start speaking. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of this man, and this woman in holy matrimony, before the presents of god. before we start, is there anyone here present who objects this ceremony, and wishes that these two shall not be-” Leo opens the doors, and yells out. “I object! stop the ceremony! I have something to say! it’s very important! I beg of you! just listen!” everyone gasped as they see him, (Y/N) stands there baffled. “Leo....why are you doing this?” Leo walks up to you, and takes a deep breath. the groom tries to push Leo away, but then he pushes the guy back. “please. let me say my peace.” the guy stops and stares angry at the turtle. Leo turns to you, “don’t marry this guy. he’s not a good guy for you. you deserve better than this. and....I...*clears throat* um....I-I wanted to say that....I love you (Y/N). I always have. I can’t spend another day without you....and I mean that.” you stare at him as you start to tear up a bit. “Leo...why didn’t you tell me?....” Leo sighs deeply, and responds softly. “it’s because of me being a mutant. I thought you wouldn’t like me back because of it....now you know....” you both smile at each other and you both slowly lean into each other about to kiss, but then the groom snatches you away from him. “enough games!!” Leo takes out of his katanas, and starts to threaten him. “let her go!! I know what you’re trying to do! I heard everything!! so who are you!!?” The groom looks at everyone, and back at Leo. “you wanna know?....” then there was silence. that is when the groom takes out a microphone and talks into it. “it is time boys. we got him now.” suddenly, a bunch of foot clan soldiers uncovered themselves from their fancy attire, and surrounds Leo. “that’s right! I am the son of the infamous Shredder! I had to do something so I can make him proud to kill you! I will bring your head to him once I am done with you!! you think you call yourself a man? than why don’t you come and face me!?” Leo’s eyes turn from subtle to seriousness and rage. “with pleasure!” and so the foot clan attacks and Leo takes them out single handedly, and the son of shredder attacks Leo in the face. it was an endless sword fight, and Leo at first was winning, but then his katanas get knocked down. he never knew how strong and very skillful this guy’s fighting style was. Leo was trying his best to defend himself, but from every cut and blow lead him to being vulnerable. you couldn’t help but stop watching the horror. Leo was on the verge to passing out of exhaustion and defeat trying to keep himself up. you try to stop your fiance from killing poor Leo, but then you get hurt yourself as you get hit back hard from the bastard. Leo witnesses it, and then he becomes very angry and literally beats the living shit out of the guy, and almost killed him. but thankfully, he stopped since he knows that being a ninja doesn’t mean he has to kill others for justice. he runs up to you although injured, he doesn’t care at all. all he ever cared was you being okay. “Leo!” you both hugged each other, and Leo apologizes many times but, then you stopped him by kissing him on the lips. “you know, I kinda need that.” he smiles and slowly gets up as they hear the echoes of sirens from a distance. “let’s go home. I really some medical attention. I know for a fact Donnie will help out with that.” you all head to the lair. thankfully, at least the wedding is over....in a disastrously way actually. a year later, you and Leo go out on dates, had your ups and downs during the relationship, but now, you finally decided to tie the knot. Leo was nervous of course. Donnie was chosen to be best man, and Mikey was getting a bit bored since he just wanted to eat the cake already. as you walked down the aisle, Leo couldn’t help but just stare. the ceremony was going well. and it was time to say the vows. Leo was trying to fight the tears. as he says his. “(Y/N), I have so many things to share with you that I couldn’t express. we may be different, and we may be judged by others in the outside world, but I will promise myself that I will never let anything get in between us. I will honor and cherish you, and spend our days together in our eternal lifetimes. I love you. and I hope our happiness will show that humans and mutants can live in peace and.....bring a new society that we all deserve.” you smile at him, and you say your own vows. “Leo. ever since we met, you were the turtle who never wanted to give up hope and take on the big responsibility as leader of your family. we always had great times spending our days getting to know each other and knowing we are different, we deserve a happy life. and I realize, we can’t live without each other. I will honor and cherish you, and I am happy that today, I call you my husband. I love you, and no matter who you decide to be, you are always human in my eyes.” you start to tear up, and the moment he wipes away your tears, he finally kisses you in the end. everyone cheered, and Mikey starts throwing a bunch of flower petals like a child “wooo! that’s my big bro right there!!” Raph rolls his eyes at him. “oh brother.” and so, you and Leo are finally happy being husband and wife and plus, hopefully mutants and humans may actually live happily together in peace. THE END (okay! and that was that! who should I do this next? Mikey, Raph or Donnie? I’d be happy to do more. had a lot fun doing this.) :)
