Top 10 WORST Movies of 2023
For every good movie there’s always a dozen stinkers, and 2023 brought out a lot of turkeys, and I’m not referring to all the poor birds that ended up in our bellies this Christmas season. It’s become a tradition for me every year to do a top 10 best and worst movies of the year list, and I tend to leave the top 10 best list till later as I catch up will the awards potentials, however with the bad list I get right on into it. There are of course many bad movies this year I didn’t see, as I don’t actively seek out to watch the bad ones, but I have heard that these following haven’t been the best: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Marvels, Indiana Jones 5, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Expend4bles, Children of the Corn, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey…… damn, a lot of films got a bad rep this year. Yet I have 10 other ones that I’ve seen that I thought were crap. Don’t worry if a film you loved ends up on this list, it will simply mean your opinion is wrong and your have to live with that. With that in mind, here’s my humble list of the shit-fest Hollywood had to offer in 2023…
10) ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA - Everything that is wrong with the current state of Marvel is exhibited on full display here. Lacking a sense of direction and exploiting the idea of the multiverse just for the sake of it, the movie is a dud. It feels like whilst trying to focus on going bigger and bolder, the movie lost the sense of fun that elevated the earlier instalments in the tiny hero’s franchise. Paul Rudd is still as charming and likeable as ever, however the introduction of Kang as the next MCU Big Bad is pointless seeing as this big baddie can be defeated by a bunch of ants. Don’t make no difference now anyway with Jonathan Majors losing the court case, but who in the first place thought “oh yeah, Kang is a badass who killed many Avengers, but a giant head of Corey Stoll should weaken him no problem”. Look, there’s no sugarcoating it - this movie is bad. Also, Bill Murray appears in this because…?
9) THE BEANIE BUBBLE - Zack Galifianakis without any facial hair is truly a sight to behold, but that’s not enough to make this fluffy yet bland behind-the-scenes look at the famous Beanie Babies toys even remotely interesting. It’s as if this film can’t bear (thank you) to show the creepier side of these toys, as this should have been a more darker and messed up tale, especially with the lightly implied institutional sexism. Oh well, that’s that then.
8) WE HAVE A GHOST - If ever there was a movie that fit more to the phrase “Netflix & Chill” then this is it, as you will be too busy banging your partner or your sock than caring about a silent speechless David Harbour creeping about Casper-like and being all quiet and mysterious. To be fair he’s the only redeemable quality as the rest of the movie is a mishmash hodgepodge of genres that is neither funny, nor effective in its family drama dynamic. At least seeing Jennifer Coolidge jump out a window was mildly amusing. Mildly. Anyway, where’s that sock?
7) THE OLD WAY - It is truly fascinating that after starring in over 100 films, this is Nicolas Cage’s first ever western. Aside from that mind boggling revelation, this movie comes out with less than a bang. I don’t know, I was hoping for something a bit more mad, especially with Cage’s involvement. Heck, in the movie’s opening sequence Nicolas Cage is introduced with a sprawling Poirot-like moustache, and immediately I assumed that I am in for something ridiculous. However following that scene the movie cuts to 20 years later, and with that both the moustache and the hope for something exciting or weird is diminished to singular unseen atoms.
6) FOOL’S PARADISE - The directorial debut from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day (who also writes and stars), misfiring Hollywood satire Fool’s Paradise wastes a strong ensemble cast that also includes Adrien Brody, Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, Kate Beckinsale, Ken Jeong, Common, John Malkovich and the late Ray Liotta. Look, in a way I feel bad about including this film on this list, as you can tell this is a true passion project for Day and one that has good intentions by attempting to go back to the old-school slapstick Charlie Chaplin-era of comedy, with a lighthearted satire on the way the film industry works. In this case the result is neither sweet nor funny enough, and as such it’s an unfortunate misfire, but easily the most disappointing inclusion on this list.
5) GHOSTED - Adrien Brody’s crappy French accent in this movie I could have forgiven, if only I have not seen John Wick: Chapter 4 a couple of weeks prior where I experienced the most delightful Parisian mouthing of Bill Skarsgard’s villain, so now Brody’s French-ish slur sticks out like a sore thumb. What else sticks out is that Ghosted feels like a film from the early 2000s, featuring every cliche of the genre and with a romantic pairing of Chris Evans and Ana de Armas whom share zero chemistry. Their kissing scenes reminded me of that Andrew Garfield/Emma Stone SNL sketch where they don’t know how to kiss on camera, only in this case it’s unintentional. Also featuring a slew of pointless cameos, and I do mean pointless, this is a throwaway campy spy-action flick that is destined to be forgotten.
4) THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER - Billed as the true sequel to William Friedkin’s original horror masterpiece, it really shouldn’t have strived for that. Ellen Burstyn’s return is a waste. For those excited to see her, she’s only in 3 or 4 scenes total, and the creative choices made with her character are such a disservice to the original movie. Without spoiling, it’s a choice that seems to be inspired by the modern woke culture, with Burstyn’s Chris having being studying the art of exorcism ever since the events that transpired with her daughter, and then when questioned about why she herself did not partake in her daughter’s exorcism she blames the patriarchy. The choice of bringing her into this narrative and then what happens to her…it’s basically taking a classic character and making them dumb. I must say though that the only actual shocking moment in the movie comes in a scene involving her character, and though that moment itself is memorable, the build up towards it is so stupid. Also, with the return of Burstyn it comes as no surprise within the movie when a certain other character pops in for a cameo. Does it add anything to the movie’s story? No, it’s just there for cheap fan service. As for the movie itself, the horror hardly works. It’s not scary at all and you really shouldn’t believe in this one.
3) THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE - Yeah, I know, my inclusion of this film on the list will rattle some feathers, but I don’t care, as for any of you pricks out there thinking that stupid “Peaches” song deserves an Academy Award nomination, you guys are stupid and must be high on some very powerful shrooms. If so, I hope you’re having a great trip, but the fact stands that this movie is bad. Simply doing fan service for the sake of fan service don’t make for a good narrative. Me and my friend were bored throughout, as this movie is 100% for kids. There are nostalgic elements to it all, but I do believe that Illumination and Nintendo should have followed more in The Lego Movie’s footsteps and targeted the film for audiences of all ages, due to the fact that many who grew up with Mario are now adults themselves.
2) LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND - So much wasted potential. A long drawn-out slow shuffle to Nowheresville. A movie that offers so many ideas, plot points, and thread lines that are never answered or go anywhere. In Leave the World Behind things are truly happening under the motto “just because” and “why the hell not” and it makes the viewing experience immensely frustrating. Especially when the movie is nearly 2 and a half hours long and the anticlimactic abrupt ending is a slap to your face for wasting your time. Oh, and if I weren’t a fan of the Friends show before, now more so than ever.
1) 65 - Right ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to ask you all so kindly to rise up from your seats and give a humongous round of applause to 65 - the 2023 film to exhibit qualities of a top contender of the worst movie of this year. Look, I’m disappointed as you are. Adam Driver fighting dino-dinos’?! You’d be a madman to not want to see that! However here’s 65′s first mistake: there actually aren’t that many dinosaurs, let alone fights with them. I know right, I can sense the resounding aura of you, my kind audience, in unison thinking “what the f***?”. Exactly, what the fudge indeed. No, instead what we get is a couple of somewhat thrilling dinosaurs interactions, but overall the movie is just Adam Driver and this little girl walking. Just walking. Walking and whistling. Bunch of jackasses.
That’s it - we did it! Now I can happily forget I ever watched any of these and mentally prepare for what wonders of stupidity 2024 will bring to the big screen. As for my Best Movies of 2023 list, don’t worry, it’s a-coming. Still need to watch The Boy and the Heron and Poor Things and then all will be revealed…

I watched Exorcist: Believer so that you don't waste your time...
As always my friends spoilers under the cut! ✝️
This movie....yeesh where do you start? It has none of the charm of the original. Relies heavily on cheap jump scares and feels personally like a generic exorcism movie with a weird abortion message and the exorcist legacy haphazardly stitched onto the ends. Angela and her father are fairly likeable, their story is tragic, dead mom and all. However they seem like a decent family. Katherine the possessed little girl who looked a bit like little Regan, her family in my opinion is less likeable. They're your typical white overtly religious babtist family which I've had my fill of in my life time.
The girls go to do a "ritual" in the woods, if you can call a pendulum reading a ritual. They light a candle and swing the pendulum and ask spirits to speak through them, particularly Angela's dead mom. Somehow this summons pazuzu? Umm well we aren't really sure it's pazuzu...it's never called by name in the movie. It seems to recognize Chris MacNeil when she joins the movie in the tail half buttttt in the first exorcist pazuzu seems to know karras and his mother without having met the two.
Speaking of the original, how can I not? All of the things related to the original are in the second half. We don't see Regan the entire movie except for a photo cameo and a very brief hospital visit at the end of the movie. Chris in the meantime has become an expert on exorcism from multiple religions for some reason....I suppose she didn't want to move on from the events of her daughter's possession. There are no priests connected to the original and when a priest finally steps into the spotlight to perform an exorcism he's killed pretty much immediately.
The girls chastise two characters harshly while possessed. Angela's father and her nurse neighbor. It's this weird anti abortion rhetoric we've all heard and maybe you're into that but I'm not...also if you're anti abortion maybe get off my blog...thanks. Anyways, they criticize the two for two separate events. The nurse had an abortion while trying to become a nun and hey remember when I said Angela's mom died before? Well it was while she was pregnant. Angela's father had the choice between saving his wife or his unborn baby and of course he chose his wife. However in a twist of fate his wife didn't make it regardless and they cut Angela out of her early.
Katherine really doesn't have a lot going on besides having a turbo religious family and doing this ritual. Ultimately she dies and Angela is saved which was really odd to me. I liked the twist they did, the demon said they could only choose one child to live. Katherine's father chose her, but the twist was they were choosing who to die. The only thing I didn't get was why the demon just....magically chose to be honorable to its word. Because as soon as Katherine is down for the count Angela is released and ok like nothing is wrong!
And life just...goes back to normal. Big whoop roll credits.
I didn't really care for this movie if you couldn't tell. As a standalone exorcism movie.... I'd maybe rank it higher but I'd say with confidence that I rate this 2/5 for the two eyes Chris MacNeil lost during this snoozefest

This movie was just mid honestly.
I think the actors did a pretty good job, especially the two young girls. I loved the exorcism scene! I also like that they brought in multiple faiths to do the exorcism. I thought that was an interesting and unique idea.
Unfortunately, those were the only things I really like about the film. Random "scary" images would pop up on screen like a carnival ride. Character logic was all over the place, like Angela's dad going from skeptic to total believer in two seconds. The ending didn't resolve anything.
And what was with the anti-abortion theme in this film?

31 Nights of Halloween Horror: day 25
My choice for last night was the sequel to what some say is one of the best horror movies ever made. My pick was The Exorcist: Believer
I rated this 6/10. I was so excited for this one, and while it was fine it was a bit of a letdown. Good acting from everyone in their roles, good effects, fine plot. Idk, something was missing though. I liked that they brought back Regan's mom from the original, and I don't want to spoil a scene near the end, but I really liked that too, even though the scene was so short. I wish she'd been included more in the movie than that, but it's fineeee. I also liked the conclusion with the girls. Once a certain scene happened, I knew how that was going to end, but it was still good. I really wanted to like this movie more, but like I said, I'm not sure what it was lacking but it was certainly lacking something.

Do yourself a favor and don't watch the new Exorcist: Believer. The trailer had potential, but the movie was a let down - unfortunately. What was I expecting from someone who completely trashed the Halloween movies? (still ignoring the existence of Halloween Ends a year later).
So many things didn't make sense. What did the two girls do during these three days? Hang out with the horses?
I wish they had pushed more and made connections to the original instead of focussing so much on the gore - that's not what The Exorcist is about. Some parts of the possession were good, but it was nowhere nearly enough to rival the iconic moments of the original. No head turning? No cross…utilisation? No green puke?! I also feel like they were afraid to shock the public like they did in 1973.
The only good thing was seeing old faces (Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair)

THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures
SYNOPSIS: Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 13 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela on his own. When Angela and her friend Katherine disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil. -Universal Pictures
REVIEW: William Peter Blatty’s novel, “The Exorcist,” spawned four feature films and a tv series. This forth film is helmed by director/executive producer David Gordon Green and co-story contributor and executive producer Danny McBride (yes, that Danny McBride). This is the same team who worked with Blumhouse Productions to breathe new life into the Halloween franchise with 2021’s “Halloween Kills” and 2022’s “Halloween Ends.” A bit out of their league here, the story disregards many important rules of myths and religious belief system for derivative elements of genre films and franchise films.
Let me address the film's positive portions first. I enjoyed Amman Abbasi and David Wingo’s score that incorporates movements based on Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield used in the original film. I enjoyed Cinematographer Michael Simmonds’ work in capturing moments that were reminiscent of the original film, especially the opening sequence similarities, and clearly his work with Green on “Halloween Kills” and “Halloween Ends.” The special effects makeup is good, but not great. In an area where special and visual effects can work in tandem there is nothing here that feels fresh or original, or even transcends what has gone before.
The cast is fantastic, with the amazing talents of Leslie Odom, Jr., Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn. Leslie Odom, Jr. does the best he can with the material that never allowed me, especially as a father, to connect and empathize with the character. Ann Dowd is riveting as a former nun, now a nurse, with skeletons in her closet and is left to sum up their experiences. I liked her character, but, again, never fully connected with her. Then there is Ellen Burstyn. When she is on screen she is 100% and commands the scene. However, her screen time is limited and it clearly feels like an appearance that serves more as a franchise hook than an honest integration into the plot.
Okay, so the story… Clearly they were following a formula that they constructed from watching the films and not any other literary sources or Joseph Campbell. William Friedkin even sought out one of the people who influenced Blatty’s novel, Father Amorth, and later made a film about the exorcist. There are set pieces, including the exorcism, that feel like separate pieces that they attempt to fit together. There are parts of the story that feel like they are simply checking off boxes and don’t feel centric to this particular story. As someone who has studied world religions, I loved the idea of who these people of different faiths were going to come together to save these girls, but it simply fell apart. There are rules, many similarities between beliefs, that are discarded for genre film cliches and shock value. There are setups that lead to expected outcomes and some things that make no sense. There are a lot of assumptions and things not explained that one might think would be revealed in the next installment. By the end, actress Ann Dowd’s character sits at a table delivering a monologue about evil, the devil and hope as a montage shows the audience where this experience has left these characters. One scene in particular feels like it is the purpose of this entire film, in a way detracting from everything that has gone before or any message the film tries to make.
THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER feels more about creating a franchise and an attraction at 2024 Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. It’s one of the better Blumhouse Production films, but the material is beyond the grasp of the writers. Strong performances are wasted in service of a superficial screenplay that weaves in several lines that are written for laughs, and they get them, but don’t really belong here or uttered by the characters that do. The central idea never fully gells and the question of innocence feels to fall by the wayside. As a colleague pointed out, the trailer makes the film look better than it actually is. One can only hope that this is not the first in an attempt to “exorcize” the material in hopes a franchise.
CAST: Leslie Odom, Jr., Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, E.J. Bonilla, Raphael Sbarge and Ellen Burstyn. CREW: Director - David Gordon Green; Screenplay - Peter Sattler and David Gordon Green; Based on characters created by William Peter Blatty; Producers - Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James G. Robinson; Cinematographer - Michael Simmonds; Score - Amman Abbasi & David Wingo; Editor - Timothy Alverson; Production Designer - Brandon Tonner-Connolly; Special Make-up FX Designer - Christopher Allen Nelson; Special Effects Supervisor - Heath Hood; Visual Effects Producer - Andre Coutu.

well, congratulations David Gordon Green, you did bring everybody together in realizing just how much of a fucking hack you are, how vapid your storytelling instincts are, and how nobody should ever allow you within 10,000,000,000 feet of another franchise ever again. somehow 10 times worse than i imagined it would be, and i was already expecting rock bottom. all the shallow ideas and awful execution of Halloween (2018), combined with a dull cast, and an awful script which is largely just a shitty repetition of the beats of Friedkin's original, rushed through to get to a climax that is even more repulsive to experience than it sounds — a combination of a poor understanding of the themes and ideas of the original, with an inert climax out of the worst Blumhouse possession movie you've seen. had me begging for it to be over, almost considered DNFing it, and you have no idea the toll it took on my soul to get through this. made me experience the same kind of despair and crisis of faith in art watching it as i did watching The Rise of Skywalker. yes, it is THAT bad. feels calculated to spit on the original more than it tries to build off anything it was doing. worst Exorcist movie and it is not even remotely close. not only has no respect for its source material, doesn't even have any respect for its audience. i honestly don't think Green liked the original at all, or even that he likes movies and stories. even The Beginning was doing something more fun and interesting and actually trying to engage with the audience. i cannot wait until the reins to this franchise are in Mike Flanagan's hands and i can forget this movie ever existed.

Movie Review | The Exorcist: Believer (Green, 2023)
This is better than DGG’s Halloween movies in some ways because he doesn’t see the source material for this as something base he needs to elevate or deconstruct, so you get people having conversations like actual human beings instead of shouting in themespeak. No “the more Pazuzu kills, the more he transcends into something else impossible to defeat: fear” or any of that bullshit.
But this is worse than DGG’s Halloween movies in other ways because he at least had a decent feel for blunt, punishing violence in those, while he has absolutely no handle on the scares here. This honestly looks like an SNL horror parody sketch at times. Also unforgivable that it takes like forty minutes to reach the first real scare.
I do think we’ve reached the point where elevated horror is no longer a sure bet, because even five years ago, audiences and critics would not have rejected an alleged horror movie that traded actual scares for dourness as firmly as they did this one.
Also, it’s so funny that they made such a big deal of bringing back Ellen Burstyn and then dropped her from the movie after like five minutes. I nearly went to see this in theatres for her role, but I’m now glad I waited for streaming. Anyway, at the risk of sounding mean, the bit at the end reminded of that Onion article “Old Man’s Son Also Old Man.”
