Long answer is "I absolutely want to and have been scribbling down notes for a personal take on this concept ever since I joined the fandom months before the movie even came out, the idea is very much there but I can't seem to narrow it down to a feasible format that wouldn't take me forever to make and there's so much context needed to reach that point it admittedly feels a little overwhelming, so I honestly have no idea whether I'll actually draw it someday or not, BUT the inspiration for it has remained constant and I think about it on a fairly regular basis, so... That's good. I think?" 😅

If anything, the 1-UP mushroom will definitely at least be mentioned in my art eventually, but I can't offer any guarantee other than that. ><

keith! the throwaway name in tdpi to you; but to me he's an actual character

younger me is screaming rn, ever since i watched tdpi when it came out, i was super interested in keith as a character (and his dynamics with sky, and with dave)!! finally here we are, some picrews of what i think he looks like & some basic info! (cant do the 16-slide presentation with him rn like i did with gabriel 😔 but maybe i will in the future!)

here's a fic abt him! (plus i do have an rr au idea with him in my drafts)

below the cut are gonna be some keith (and keith & sky) hcs:

-> keith is exceptional in almost any sport he puts his mind to! his favorites are baseball and basketball though. he met sky through a school game and they bonded over their love of athletics!

-> keith never rlly considered sports as a career, he's always default thought of it as a hobby. sky was the one who wanted to take her skills farther, and he did support her for it

-> their shakiness started when sky brought up auditioning for tdpi. keith has heard the shit that happens in many reality shows and worried for her, saying they could try another solution. they argued, sky signed up for tdpi (she said she'll miss him in the audition bc he was filming and it was sort of as a 'im sorry for the fights pls try to understand' thing). however, despite keith trying to understand, he didn't watch any of tdpi until the finale episode

-> as a loyal person in relationships, keith was extremely hurt and upset by sky kissing dave and then leading him on. it made him feel quite worthless, and despite any reconciliations, he knows he can't ever trust her again

-> he doesnt like dave bc the guy went ballistic and put sky's life in harm's way, he considers that a bit of an overreaction on dave's end and he does resent him for believing he played a part in sky falling for him

-> this guy places trust to a high degree, if you break it, you're seeing a different keith

-> he's the type to maybe be good/proficient at chess. might have him be good at it actually!

-> he and sky are both bisexual. sky is bi with a preference for women; keith is bi but used to pretend he was straight due to the environment he lived in

-> sky and keith's relationship tropes: friends to lovers, mutual respect for each other, relationship for convenience

-> in actuality, sky & keith's relationship is more of a friendship. they only made it like they're dating bc of their families, and when their individual sexuality crisis came up, that caused some issues. prior to tdpi, sky already had a feeling she liked women, but she kept it to herself; keith, for his part, already was aware of his bisexuality when he and sky started dating but he thought their relationship would "get rid of it". in the end, sky got the courage to push aside the veil in front of their relationship first (hence the dave moments), and keith tried to hide behind their relationship bc he didn't know if he had the guts to confront the implications

-> keith's fully ready to confront/fight anyone who gives him bad vibes and isn't afraid to show that--all except for his father (the man gave this guy too much trauma for that)

-> he got his piercings as a nonverbal 'eff you' to the old keith he used to be. back when he was worried abt his parents judgements and his friends. before tdpi, before sky and his breakup, before he made an effort to come into his real self

-> his mum and he have a complicated relationship. she's low-key homophobic at times that he cant get a proper read on her. but he does love her (def more than he does his dad), and he hopes she's willing to accept him

-> has heterochromia; one eye is dark blue, the other is light hazel (he tends to wear contacts, making it seem like he has two blue eyes)

-> he shaved part of the side of his head in a fit of impulsiveness at a concert with several friends, but then he realized he looks good in it and he likes the style, so he kept it that way

-> the type to wear sweatshirts/shirts/hoodies with lowkey memes on them (as shown in the pics with him wearing the orange hoodie with the two fingers almost touching)

-> he and sky were the epitome of 'what we have is better off as a wonderful friendship than a romantic relationship'

-> he and sky tended to help each other sports-wise in various ways; like she'd play scrimmages with him, and he'd race hurdles with her. this helps both of them grow and bond at the same time. it's a fun pastime they both enjoyed and feel nostalgic for now

-> clothing style: the stuff in the pics, along with jeans (not rlly baggy jeans though) along with sports sneakers or light brown hiking boots

-> one time sky twisted her ankle and refused to get help, and keith had to literally piggy-back her to his car bc she said she "can just walk it of, its fine!"

-> strong emotionally/mentally/physically. more so abt the first two, he's good at hiding his feelings bc of the environment he grew up in and his family (his dad more so). if he and dave ever have a heart-to-heart they can discuss their shitty father figures and how that lack impacted them lmao (the dave in my head has a shitty and distant father)

-> this also makes him more suppressed emotionally and more uncommunicative

Neat concept to consider: a Dark Urge origin character could technically regain their memory if they had Regenerate cast on them.

I say could because if someone wanted to be a stickler for wording, it can be validly ruled that Regeneration doesn't apply to internal/organ damage as it specifically only details regrowth of "severed body members". However, also equally valid ruling to say that it would make sense it would recover significant internal damage.

I think it's pretty sensible to say that Regenerate would restore it, as it has been firmly established in-game that the majority of the memories lost for the Dark Urge are explicitly due to physical trauma to the brain. Since Heal is described as having healed a sliver of the permanent damage which then caused immediate memory recollection, safe to say that complete restoration of the brain would come with total or almost total memory recollection.

Which leads to the most interesting character building point of this which is: how would regaining their memories affect the Dark Urge, especially if the identity they developed post-amnesia is fundamentally different from who they originally were? Would the reclamation of memory be processed as gaining their prior sense of identity in some way, or would it get processed more like witnessing the memories of an entirely separate person from their POV?

I think it's only a given that the answers to these questions heavily relies on whatever path the new Dark Urge has chosen, as well as whether or not the Dark Urge still has Bhaal's blood. Even more intriguing character development musings that the fraction of one's Dark Urge interpretation is influenced by where in the timeline memories are regained. Further expanded upon, another question is if the return of their memory would drive the Dark Urge back to the ambitions of their old self or if it would only serve to fuel atonement more than they were already motivated to.

I try not to read into the politics of a story too much (<-lying) because doing so relies on some level of auteurism which a) isn't how a lotta major IPs are made anymore and b) assumes the writing is good, lol

But all that said, cartoonish awkwardness in fiction is remaining a personal pet peeve. In and of itself, awkwardness is not a character flaw! Awkwardness has no hubris, no moral upsides nor downsides. So at best, depicting it is emotionally cheap #relatable things wasting word count ("wOw u guys, sometimes my hair is super messy! And I eat chocolate lol I'm such a slob" etc) or it's just moe shit. Which is patronizing when the character isn't a child and a spectrum of un-ideal to exploitative when the character is one lol.

Im not saying the writers at, say, bamco are evil for having suletta stutter or anything, (the company is evil for other things, lol) the intent is clearly just to add flavortext and an endearing child lead (and it works!) But playing that primarily for laughs/cute factor undercuts any relevant story element from being serious.

Like, pretty clearly, a child that awkward and isolated is emotionally underdeveloped, from neglect or isolation or both. And realistically her literacy would be under par, further weakening her communication skills and autonomy. That's bleak! That's cyclical abuse, even without an Evil Mom™! Gwitch is a show for teens, so i wasn't expecting or needing it to go to the depths of despair but depth is good lol, teens aren't idiots.

Most of all, my heart goes out to awkward children who see themselves reflected in awkward characters, only to realize that that commonality exists as a marketable trope, not a meaningful exploration of the topic. It's not depicted to show HOW a character can be/become that way, nor how it affects their place in the world, what they can do abt that etc but just a trait with no cause n effect in this fictional world.

Why? The short answer is 'its just bad writing' but more specifically I think atomizing traits like that can belie writers' disinterest in realism, or even a disinterest in grappling with the status quo. It's very 'apolitical' to just say hey heres a character trait. It's just sort of there, don't think about it too hard if you don't want to.

look i’ve done plenty of bitching and whining myself about the ancient gene bloat and how long it’s taking them to implement solutions to handle that (and complaining about them continuing to add ancients/ancient genes in the meantime bc i hate the damn things anyway lol)

but it is getting so exhausting watching people flip their fucking lids about how “site activities were fine we didn’t need THIS part updated, why did they do this part first, why didn’t they address the MP first, staff won’t fix the parts that actually need fixing omg!!!!!!” they are getting to it. further updates are coming. they have repeatedly told us there will be further updates to deal with the gene bloat, this one new exchange shop is not in any way the end of it. how many times does staff have to say other parts of the site will be fixed before people stop acting like they don’t care and won’t fix anything.

yes it’s taking them an agonizingly slow time that they’ve just been making worse in the meantime but good lord the amount of people acting like they’re just outright refusing to deal with the gene bloat at all is absurd. like why even pitch such a fit about the site activity genes getting a new system first as if staff can go back in time to cater to your desires instead?

and it’s like almost always people claiming gene bloat is at its worse in the MP despite the fact that the MP has filters already and the problem is… honestly barely a real problem there at all. can you please figure out how the site works and what the actual issues are before whining. thanks
