Quick context for you:

Someone brought their Logan alt to pride, and occasionally said in map chat ‘Seraph pride’ along with the slew of other things people said (she later acknowledged that it was in poor taste, she wasn’t thinking about any connotations just having fun shouting about her favorite character)

The person then received bullying and harassment at pride, and got death threats and suicide bait in her dms. She was effectively ran out of pride and off of tumblr.

It was a lot to see happen, especially when no one cares when people being Rama, Joko, Caudecus, and a whole slew of other characters to pride

yeah i'm buddies with someone who regularly goes as joko, which like. yeah people are allowed to like what they like. i've seen folks act perfectly normal in cosplay. by all means if you want to bring up these other character cosplays, have an actual conversation about it, but don't just use it as a 'gotcha' to excuse someone else's behavior.

and yelling out 'seraph pride' is more than just cosplaying a character you like, y'all. if you're making statements with actual implications like that...would you want the caudecus you mentioned to go around saying 'white mantle pride'? like even if not for the very unfortunate and on the nose phrasing there, its still at best a really weird thing to be saying!

not necessarily saying they deserved full blown death threats but like. they shoulda fucking stopped the moment people were uncomfortable with it, and if you continue to be a dickwad, even unintentionally, people are allowed to continue to be upset. i'm not gonna 'both sides' this.

and like, time and time again fans of color have expressed discomfort in shit that goes down here, and they get ignored or berated and chased off gw2blr. hell, when i was trying to dig up the posts on the boneskinner, all the blogs i had reblogged stuff from, namely indigenous bloggers, had been deleted. all of them. that still haunts me. several others i've gotten to see leave after being uncomfortable with how the game itself treats norn and the enemy factions like the grawl, not to mention how the fans act. and this isn't even getting into where all the latine and black gw2 fans are -- i've got a friend who's very happy with the textured hair and face options for black humans, but they definitely haven't gotten far enough to have further commentary and i don't know the extent of what i might have to warn them about.

i didn't mean to sound like a 'fiction doesn't affect reality' person earlier. bc it does! if you have the privilege to not have a direct affect from fiction then you should consider yourself lucky it doesn't reopen wounds. not everyone gets to escape reality in fiction. just look at how people get when you mention braham, i had someone lose their shit bc of a tag i wrote on someone else's post! if people can be racist over a guy who doesn't exist, you can also be racist to real people by using the fantasy version of very real violent and racist institutions.

As a multicultural person who feels alienated from both of my cultures, I can understand this bias. Also (tho I haven't played SotO or JW yet) the GW2 fandom is FAMOUSLY bad at being normal about people who are mildly mean, specialer than they are, annoying, or insult them, just in general. (Cough cough Braham). For the record, I don't know what Isgarren has done or if he deserves the hate, but I am not going to trust the fandom that killed Trahearne and wants to kill Taimi and would rejoice if Braham died. Just no. I will play it and make my own opinion.

Also, a majority of Tumblr GW2 fandom specifically being queer might also contribute: we're used to people being mean to us for things we can't control (or for being open about them), in environments where we worry about retaliating for fear of backlash, isn't fun. So a guy who does it in a video game? It makes sense that some people choose to take out their frustration on him, and feel seen and validated and like the Commander really is themselves when the Comm acts the same way. I know really loved the WLB/WLW stories because it felt like actual bonding between Comm and the new EoD people, plus the Comm getting to actually feel the trauma for once.

(I've seen people comparing it to All The Other Times Comm Has Fought The Ghosts Of Their Past, but that was all "Hey. Heres the ghosts of ur past. Do some combat skills at them that may or may not be designed to represent emotions" whereas WLB/WLW was full of Actual Emotion. Emotional voice lines (at least on human female), behaviors like avoiding eye contact (I love you Gorrik) and being unsure/afraid, actually yelling, legitimately passing out, and discussing the deaths of close friends for possibly the first time...? That's new and different folks. I LOVED that. And the validation from getting Trahearne's ghost/memory to ACTUALLY SHOW UP??? I'm not crying you're crying).

All to say, I get why people are happy when the Comm represents and validates their view. Esp since I heard complaints that SotO felt really bland from a characterization standpoint.also I really like... the ORIGINAL Flame Legion characters and have several XDDD. (Despite being a cis woman, I'm not triggered by the sexism and I really like exploring it in more nuance. Which I will get to in my fic... someday lol.)

you all want mordrem good guys and rehabilitated sons of svanir and new wave flame legion characters, but literally cant handle when the leader of an organization that is actively protecting the entire planet like... is sassy to you? but you can just look the other way if it means you can make an edgy little guy. idk it just feels like the willingness to forgive people for horrible inhumanities is being given out a little selectively if it is to be given out at all, when Isgarren has literally ruined his entire life trying to handle everything on his own because everyone is too intimidated by him to stay when he tries to shut them out. except Mabon who, well, yeah

So I've read through a lot of the responses and it is a lot of this. I only got into this game because of my best friend trying out from one of her friends as I was starting out in the DA fandom.

This was around fall of 2014. I remember there being general tumblr drama that fell over into this area. That's nothing new. It's tumblr, that happens.

Honestly I won't even say the pandemic or playing final fantasy was the reason (because I didn't grow up playing that game so I'm not going to count it). I will count the fact that because tumblr fucked up art and porn and shit on here is why a LOT of people left.

Number 1: Tumblr is dead. Period. It's Tumblr. It's really not anything else other than tumblr. We are all holding on for the next tumblr to come around. I only foow like maybe 6 GW2 folks on Twitter and the art scene is dead there too. Twitter too hostile though 😂

Number 2: It was the imbalance of it all.

I came in when LSS2 finished and HoT was going on for at least six months. I played personal story and was damn near individually introduced to a variety of characters depending on which race I played.

I went into Living Story Season Two and THAT is where the confusion and fustration started.

The fact that I came in too late to play the first living story and going through all of these flashbacks of old lions arch and new lions arch just looked incomplete. So much damn space and no character.

Then Heart of Thorns happened and my god the stress. I ain't never cried over the loss of characters and storyline like I did with HoT. Having to learn about new characters who I was never properly introduced to and then expected to care about them and play with them while my favs just died and suffered. Like that was torture porn. I didn't ask for that. Plus the amount of people who randomly hated Sylvari.....was....um...interesting.

Then we go into Living Story Season Three which is all over the place with stuff coming from the first Guild Wars game (which god can people go back over there I need help in both prophecies and nightfall 😂) and it just seemed forced why trying to implement this new team of characters that I still wasn't fond of because I never built a relationship with them through story and gameplay. Just like that, the storyline started dying.

Path of Fire came and I was excited because yay Black characters for me! And then the issue around that between non black players and black players who been in the game since it started...🥴 And folks thinking that we're bringing "politics" into it honestly scared off some of the racists in the tumblr fandom away. Now about the gameplay.....chile I still haven't finish PoF because it's just a lot and not a lot of people are online on my server...

Then Living Story Season Four happened and I just disconnected from the game because I'm already struggling to get mounts, then you add like 3 more mounts and then we randomly beat Joko and Kralkatorik and I'm just overwhelmed at this point.

Now we on the Icebrood saga that don't have shit to do with Norn and it's seems like it's all Charr stuff and I was expecting a mini Skyrim story so I can Kiki and cackle and have fun with and it's just gotten depressing. I don't know what's going on. When did Braham become one with Primordus and why and I don't like that, what does that mean....I worry about that child. Like where is the imagination for the Norn and Charr players?

Ain't we going to Cantha or something? And I sure as fuck don't know shit about Cantha because I'm still struggling to get through prophecies and nightfall, ain't no way I'll be dealing with factions anytime soon.

Like what happened to half the characters? Like I'm just fustrated. I miss all of the characters. I really do....half the factions in the game done fell off after HoT.....

It's like some of us want to see some ideas from other MMORPGs brought into this game. This game has so much potential to be great but it's like NCSoft fucking up. ArenaNet fucking up.

Lastly, I think also we are all old farts and don't wanna be bothered with anything anymore. Hell, even the Sims is trash.

What Killed The GW2 Tumblr Fandom?

(And I do just mean the tumblr fandom. I’ve not really noticed the fandom as a whole having this problem.)

So full disclosure before I talk about what I’ve noticed personally and why I think this jazz is happening: I’ve never been the most active in this fandom. I’ve tried to be in the past but even at my peak I’ve always felt a lil outside of everything? I’ve been playing GW2 since launch and I’ve been making a Gw2 comic at @torasteals for the fandom for almost 5 years at this point. For most of that time I’ve felt like some weirdo tossing shit into the void and only vaguely being aware of what else was going on in the tumblr fandom beyond the few blogs I followed. I want y’all to keep this in mind cause it does paint my perception of what I’ve seen as different from someone who may have been far more involved in the fandom than me.

Okay with that in mind…

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

The death of engagement within the GW2 fandom as I’ve noticed it seems tied to at least three things: Tumblrpocalypse of 2018, the migration to FFXIV, and the Pandemic of 2020.

Tumblrpocalypse of 2018

Does anyone else remember this shit? Tumblr had that change of policy around nsfw art and changed how they treat links that basically murdered a bunch of creators on tumblr? Everyone remember the mass exodus of artists and creators leaving tumblr for twitter? Yeah tumblr has definitely chugged along alive since, somehow miraculously, but the effects of this can still be felt to this day. We lost a large chunk of creators for the fandom during this. I wouldn’t be surprised if a large chunk of fans, who don’t create fan works, left for this reason as well.

Personally, tumblr’s changes in policy and algorithm during this time nearly killed my comic. I lost a lot of readers and a lot of engagement with my work. I wouldn’t be surprised if other artists went through something similar here.

Even so, I do recall there still being a lot of creators that held on during this time and who persisted to create works on tumblr. But then…

The Migration to FFXIV

From what I’ve seen, a lot of people, creators and just fans alike, have simply moved on from GW2 to FFXIV. Like, a LOT of them. Nearly every artist that I used to follow for GW2 content just doesn’t do that anymore. Nearly all of them have moved onto FFXIV (and sometimes some other game entirely, but it’s usually FFXIV). I don’t know what this says about the state of the game itself right now, but I’m not sure we’re getting as many new fans as we’re losing right now. That might change when End of Dragons is released, since expansions have always historically brought in an influx of new blood, but I’m no fortune-teller.

As it currently stands, I legitimately don’t know how many of us are left in this fandom. Hell, I still regularly make content for this fandom weekly and I can tell you I’ve been burned out on the game and needing a break from it for awhile now. I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t a common feeling.

Pandemic of 2020

I would honestly argue that this is what put the nails in the coffin for the fandom at present. I couldn’t begin to tell you exact reasons why, but I can tell you that as soon as shit really hit the fan last year, engagement in this fandom basically died. My posts that used to get a handful of reblogs, have turned to nearly zero over the course of this crisis.

My dashboard used to be littered in GW2 posts. So much so that even if I didn’t directly follow them, I could tell you who the big names in the tumblr fandom were. I can’t do that anymore. I have no idea who is big and popular on here anymore. It’s not just that people have stopped engaging, it’s that people have stopped creating as well. I’ve seen honest to god radio silence from creators who used to dominate the GW2 tag.

Again I’ve got nothing but guesses as to why this is? COVID has done a number on all of us I think. It’s harder to create and it’s harder to engage. It’s incredibly depressing on a number of fronts.

So is this it then?

I’d like to hope it isn’t?

I don’t really want to end this on such a doom and gloom note, and I’m sorry for that. I don’t think the fandom will straight up die forever but I do think we’re havin’ it rough right now. And there’s no guarantee of when shit’ll pick back up again as far as I’m aware.

If anyone else has thoughts on this, I’d love to hear it. I’m sure my picture of what I’ve been seeing is incomplete, so if anyone has stuff to add or has noticed things I’ve straight up been blind to, I’d be very curious to know.

EarHazard : formerly an Engineer, died and re-animated by Lunna as a risen-warrior, only to be broguht back to life again as a revenant no fighting for control over his own body against the other legends and the legal husband to Lunna, Doctor and a Necromancer.

Lunna, lone wolf Doctor , completly shut herself out in an attempt to bring her husband and best friend in all of tyria back to life, only to get an empty husk.

Nevertheless she took care of him just as much, and was all the more frightened to one day discover that his soul randomly found it's way back into his body, but it was not the only one that did.

After years, they've found a way to keep him tethered to his own mind's throne, most of the time. And thus they can return to having the life that was taken from them prematurely.

I’m not coming back to Tumblr, but as someone who is finally playing through all the GW2 story I quit out of back in 2015 (and actually playing GW2 again and thinking of fic ideas, although the chance of writing them is small...but maybe; triannoc in 2022?), man, they did Trahearne dirty. I’m still sad and mad. I still love this salad.

Closure (Master-ish Post)

Hi friends,

You delightful goobers digging up four year old comics of mine reminded me that I never actually made a master post collecting every page of Closure like I promised repeatedly. Now Tumblr has hidden several pages of it pending appeals, so I thought it might be easier to just compile it into an imgur album until/unless I find a better way to host it.

For the uninitiated, Closure is a 57-page GW2 fan comic that I wrote and uploaded serially about two years ago - the first half was written shortly after HoT but never finished, but was resurrected as part of this project when the Caladbolg reconstruction quest was added to GW2 and more feels ensued. Closure details the history between Trahearne and my little goofball Commander Ivaris Dalmora, the fallout from Trahearne’s death, and Ive’s healing process.

The art is old, there’s plenty of mistakes and a lot of questionable design decisions, but as a hobbyist artist and not a particularly effective comic creator, Closure was my pet project for several months and despite its many flaws, I’m still quite fond of it.

I suppose: Trahearne x Commander, at least PG rating due to language and implied jokes, and a train full of feels.
