We're back!

After almost a year, the Touhou Crack Month is back for a second edition, hopefully filled with many more fun pairings and fun fics, and for this second edition, artworks as well!

What is this event?

This is a month-long AO3/Tumblr event where artists are given randomly-generated crackships, and have to desperately wrangle with whatever absurdity the RNG has wrought upon them. This event is meant to celebrate creativity, originality and adaptability in shipping.

If you're looking for a challenge, something to break your routine, a breath of fresh air, or want to experience with never-before-seen interactions and dynamics, look no further!

Proceedings

The event lasts the whole month of March 2025, starting on March 1st at 00:01 and ending on April 1st at midnight (both CET), ideally all works should be published before that deadline (not that it's a huge deal if they aren't). Each participant will receive their pairings on March 1st, each distinct from everyone else's.

You are only expected to make a single fic or artwork, but if you are really determined, nothing stops you from making even more than that, of either kind! There are never enough crackships.

Guide for potential participants (keep reading)

To participate, simply sign up using the form provided at the end of this post. In there, you can select different options to customize your experience. First is a 'difficulty' setting:

Easy: 4 randomly-generated pairings, with one to choose from for your fic.

Normal: 3 pairings.

Hard: 2 pairings.

Lunatic: only 1 pairing, so no choice!

You also have options to exclude some characters, for instance if you know them too little, or if you don't want to make ship content involving them.

For writers

Completed fics are to be published to the official AO3 Touhou Crack Month 2025 collection.

For visual artists

Completed artworks are to be published on Tumblr, under the #thcrackmonth2025 tag.

Eligible pairings

There are some restrictions put on the pairings, both to avoid uncomfortable ones, and to ensure the "crack" in the name isn't cosmetic.

Generally, eligible pairings are those where the two characters have no significant canon dialogue, interactions or strong backstory links (the latter case covers pairings such as Miko/Saki). Generic, one-off fight banter generally doesn't count (especially relevant for playable characters), nor does VS mode-exclusive dialogue (not counted as canon), nor do very brief manga/print work scenes (e.g. the big banquet of Silent Sinner in Blue).

Also excluded will be ships with strong fanon presence despite little canon basis, such as "successive bosses" ships (e.g. Wriggle/Mystia, Doremy/Sagume).

This event is yuri only, so male characters are excluded. Non-humanoid characters are also excluded unless otherwise specified by individual participants.

Note that these rules aren't exhaustive and I may exclude some other pairings in keeping with the general spirit of the rules above.

General rules

No NSFW, no intense depictions of abuse be it sexual or not (e.g. pedophilia, child abuse, etc), no incest (though all such pairings are already ineligible). Beyond that, there is no issue with delving into more mature themes, as long as they are tagged properly.

What tropes DO you like to see in hellcheer fanfics? Now I'm worried that I've been incorporating things that are harmful without even realizing it and I want to write things that won't accidentally trigger or upset a reader. Our fandom is small but strong and I don't want to contribute to any discomfort.

Oh boy. Firstly, it’s really lovely to know someone takes reader discomfort seriously and wants to ensure they’re not causing harm. 

But secondly, don’t avoid writing anything out of fear of reader reaction. That’s what tags are for! Here’s the thing: I wish more people would use too many tags rather than too little just to be safe. Or give a much better idea of what a fic will entail in the description. If they don’t want to spoil readers, one thing I’ve done in the past has been stating in my authors note that I would put a detailed description of any potentially triggering content in the end notes on AO3 and they can choose whether to read or not. Just something, you know? 

I hold myself totally responsible for what I choose to read, which means I have chosen to limit my fic reading much more than I originally thought I would out of an overabundance of caution. I think tags can only go so far if the writers themselves don’t seem to be fully conscious of what they’re putting out there with their writing. 

Which I guess leads to a thing I’ve been biting my tongue on cause my thoughts on it are still so unformed and I’m always scared of provoking hatefulness.. there is a pattern across fic in general (not just Hellcheer) of power dynamics being written naturally into all ship interactions without proper tagging. Sometimes BDSM is tagged, but nothing to specify non-sexual power dynamics, which in my perspective can often be MORE important to warn for. It seems like a lot of writers have sort of internalized this idea that there always has to be a dominant partner and a submissive partner in any pairing, and of course it almost always means the male or more masculine-presenting partner is the dominant one.

I think in normalizing this, some people started missing the fact that this is, in fact, a kink and something that HAS to be warned for. Readers should always be aware of any type of unequal power dynamic before reading a fic. 

A lot of writers are aiming for the sub partner as a fully-empowered character with their own autonomy who chooses to be submissive, but tbh, not all writers are successful at demonstrating this and instead recreate pretty fucked up dynamics that can lead to otherwise fine content being distressing for readers. 

An unrelated issue I’ve run into that a lot of people aren’t gonna wanna hear: B*lly showing up in fics without being tagged. Fucking ALWAYS tag this character. You KNOW he’s upsetting/triggering for people due to his canon behaviour, regardless of how much you personally like/relate to him. I recently read a Hellcheer fic where he showed up out of nowhere, played a prominent role in several chapters AND was in a relationship that made me super uncomfortable. If it had been in the tags, I could have at least made an informed choice about reading it without being completely fucking blindsided. 

Like I said above, I don’t think anyone should not write something cause of the way readers might react. I fully believe there is room for all types of fic– I dabble in writing pretty taboo stuff privately, and I really love darkfic. Obviously I am fine with simply not reading things that don’t interest me based on what the tags and synopsis tell me. I guess I just wish the fandom was a little more united and therefore friendlier, and had more of the kind of environment that welcomed sticky conversations like this, but it’s not and it doesn’t, so being cautious feels like my best option. 

To speak to your concern about your own writing and possible harm.. honestly, I have only seen a single other person express discomfort with some of the things I described above, and I’ve never felt comfortable discussing it one on one with anyone to see if anyone else experiences anything similar. Fandom friendships are so precarious as it is–often just expressing an opinion a mutual doesn’t like can lead to them no longer engaging with you, so the risk doesn’t feel worth it. 

I genuinely worry this is only a me problem, and other people simply don’t care and think anyone who does should just toughen up, or be less uptight or something. Maybe I’m just bitter or cynical about this fandom though. 

As for tropes I do like reading.. hmm. I feel like if I list anything right now, it’s just going to be a bunch of things that are the opposite of everything I talked about above. Is there anything in particular that sparked your message you wanted to discuss? I'm happy to chat more.

PLOTTING AND THREADS.

I try not to drop any threads and will respond to them all even if it's been awhile. never feel pressured to respond back if it has been too long, but I will try my best to always write back. I have no cap for threads, and I am so happy to leave anything if we lose the vibe for it! it will always be etched into my character's canon even if the thread isn't complete. I wing a lot of threads to see what my character does, but I am also open to plotting scenarios and bonds! I struggle to put my thoughts down so bear with me on that, or I just ramble and scream random things.

SHIPPING.

I am always very receptive to the idea of shipping. that doesn't specifically mean romantic either, because there's so many different kinds of bonds. romantic shipping I do enjoy if our characters mix - I also like the entire build, which means it's not always just soft and fluff, because we as humans we be build different. and often it's not about saying I love you, but showing it in characters own unique ways. I won't ship anything romantic with vets and 104th etc. don't force ship. even if our muses are interested in each other in canon I prefer to build towards that (this won't apply so much to characters who are married in canon). that being said please feel free to reach out! I am super friendly and happy to see if our muses end up vibing. shipping with ocs is the same. if our muses are vibing that way then absolutely open to discussing! I don't consider flirting forced shipping, or someone having a one-sided crush. as long as the mun themselves aren't trying to force something with that, then I actually have a lot of fun with that kind of dynamic!

DARK THEMES & NSFW.

the series is full of dark themes ranging from war, violence, gore, death, abuse, mental health, etc. and they won't be ignored. I do my best to tag the heavier content. things I won't touch are incest, noncon, etc. you know the drill. NSFW content is written given all my current muses are of age (if I add minor characters, this definitely does not apply to them) and found on my sideblog listed in my pinned post.

DRAMA.

I'm not going into heavy details but I just won't have that behaviour on my dash. what people write vs. their actual beliefs, the best fictional works in our current day have so much cancellable shit that if you condemn an rper then I better see you going after actors and authors too; but also if you do that then you can't tell the difference between fiction and reality and that worries me more then what people decide to write. people have triggers and content they don't want to see and that's so damn valid yes! use the block button and blocklist those tags because you also deserve to feel comfortable. you don't have to see that kind of media, so don't try and hunt for it. on that note, 2% of people will be weird, but its not the majority in the slightest, assess them vibes and keep yourself well. if mun is genuinely sus, block! block! its on sight.

FOLLOWING / UNFOLLOWING.

if we haven't interacted over a decent period of time I usually do a little blog sweep to keep my dash for my rp partners - I am also not strict about this because I do know we have lives outside rp, and often make a little post before I do anything. I usually base my follows of who my mutuals interact with and if the mun seems chill. again if you are someone that vague posts or starts drama then I don't follow / I unfollow.

This ship war discourse is so weird, why don't people just unfollow, mute, block each other and move on? Maybe someone wants to have fanons as canon for now, so what of it? Unless they are bothering people, it's just fine, if they're bothering people and being rude - report or block them. Maybe someone wants Alys to be a Harley to Aemond's Joker, or maybe someone wants Aemond to be her boytoy, canon doesn't specify anything. I don't ship it, but some people are so insistent on making Alys into a victim and Aemond into a rapist, I understand why people who actually love Aemond don't want to see it. Especially given how Aemond in the show is different from his book counterpart. I also can understand when shippers don't want to see criticism of their ship in the tag when there are so few posts about their ship. When it will hit big, they will have bigger problems but also more shippers to interact with and more content, but when you go into the tag and find criticizing posts only, it can be sad and lonely and fandoms are supposed to be for fun.

i can never condone others choosing to be so awful with one another over fiction of all things, but i wish the spaces around these two contentious ships could allow for normal conversations between users who highlight their different preferences, but manage to keep it civil and don't take every little thing personally. but it doesn't really go like that, does it? very often insults are involved and it degenerates into a bizarre moral call-out. which i think is the main aspect people are bothered about. there's a massive amount of insincerity and dissimulation that's just weird and sometimes 1984-ish.

similarly, i get how only reading criticism can get tiring when you just want to have fun with your goth barbies without getting dragged all the time. but, what i wanted to say, actually, was that this goes beyond criticism. exploring the dark aspects of a very dark ship is not definitionally equivalent to criticism. but, similarly, it seems to be something alysmonds are averse to?

re: Alys being a POW or there being a huge, problematic age gap between them. it's legit like shipping hannigram but hannibal is not allowed to be a cannibal and any mention of cannibalism leads to a meltdown. like, it removes such a fundamental aspect of that dynamic that you end up with something unrecognisably different from the starting point. which, again, fine, people are allowed to ship it like that even, if they so want, but then they should acknowledge it's a very niche and peculiar interpretation and treat it as such. not claim ownership of an entire tag and try to impose their niche interpretation on the rest of the people interested in that ship. i dunno if this makes any sense but it's late, so. :)
