Yuri!!! on Ice post-canon headcanons - Part 1

-Yuuri becomes the first skater to ratify the quad flip in-combination, with a triple toe-loop. When he lands the combo at the 2018 Winter Olympics, it predictably breaks the internet and becomes known as the Katsuki Combo. Phichit becomes the second person to cleanly land it

-Minako bartends at the Viktuuri wedding reception in Hasetsu, and is single-handedly responsible for getting everyone trashed on their 'Stammi Vicino' signature cocktail. Things get pretty risque towards the end of the night when the new grooms begin to make exceedingly over-the-top declarations of love for one another. Neither Hiroko nor Toshiya bat an eye at any of this

-The first 'Viktor and Friends' ice show -- even with the Chihoko drama -- was such an incredible success that the Katsuki-Nikiforovs make it an annual excuse for all of their friends to get together in the off-season. The Hasetsu City Council becomes so fearful over liability issues when they notice how many tourists try to scale Hasetsu Castle to get pics in 'Shining Chihoko' pose, that they permanently install guardrails on the top of the Castle

-Viktor begins learning how to pole-dance under Yuuri's instruction. It's a 50-50 in terms of whether their lessons are actually productive versus them just ending up having sex, lol. B/c they are the most extra ppl imaginable, they work with Christophe to come up with a routine to perform at the 2022 Beijing Games banquet. This is their "last hurrah" in terms of banquet shenanigans, as the 2022 Olympics marks Yuuri's last competition before retiring

-Mila and Sara begin dating during the 2019 off-season, and Sara eventually moves to St. Petersburg so they can live together. Mila has Viktor choreograph a gala skate proposal routine, and when she performs it for Sara, everyone thinks it's amazing/adorable that she caps it off with her new fiance's damnably difficult signature jump combo (the triple lutz-triple loop)

-After a few years in St. Petersburg, Viktor and Yuuri move permanently to Fukuoka, Japan, where they coach/train at the same rink as Kenjirou (who never quite gets over his Yuuri hero worship, but does learn to tone it down...somehow). The move to Japan allows the Katsuki-Nikiforovs to begin working with the Nishigoris on long-term plans to expand Ice Castle Hasetsu into a top-tier training center

-Once Yakov retires, Yurio "follows" Viktor/Yuuri to Fukuoka and becomes Viktor's second student. This "works" in some respects, and is a disaster in others. With his ample free time upon retirement, Yakov attempts to repair things with Lilia

If any of the above headcanons sound interesting to you, you might be interested in my 2018/2022 Olympic Games fic series, which is currently comprised of 7 different parts! When I first began posting part 1 (currently at 212K words and counting) last November, I didn't do a great job of promoting it. So, as it (and the overall series) gets closer to completion, I'm striving to do better around that!

I originally set out to write an in-depth, post-canon series for two main reasons:

1) I find the politics of competitive sport really interesting and, obviously, canon Yuri!!! on Ice doesn't really touch on this in just 12 episodes. But politics/bureaucracy truly do weave into just about every aspect of an athlete's career, and particularly with such a talented/prominent Japanese skater moving to St. Petersburg to live and train alongside the sport's "Living Legend", I found myself ideating around what the implications of that would mean in-universe, particularly for the Winter Olympics

and 2) I wanted to see more of the "give and take" that we know to be true of Viktor and Yuuri's relationship. Naturally, as Viktor grows into his role as Yuuri's coach in canon, the narrative is largely about how he supports Yuuri, and I wanted to be able to explore more of the opposite (Yuuri learning to support Viktor in a more overt way than is implied).

Part 1 of the series is centered around the 2022 Olympic Games, but jumps back and forth in time so that you are able to get glimpses of how their relationship has evolved from their earlier days, as well as to see the ripple effect of a big event that took place at the PyeongChang Games.

Last but not least, if you like reading post-canon Yuri!!! on Ice but don't have energy/interest in reading a very long WIP, I have lot of other stories up on ao3, which you can find here

Woahh, first of all thank you for answering so honestly and sharing a bit of your personal experiences, I am completely glad that you are now where you feel good and in a place that you can call home and your safe place 💖 Speaking of history and real world comparisons, I think that's why we end up with some people or other, the choices we make and the struggles each of us has. I think something I love about viktuuri is the answer to "why yuuri?" or "why viktor, why with viktor and not with other people?", and I think it's something precious. In other scenarios, as I've seen in another of your stories (or even in the NLA itself), I share the thought I had; otherwise chris might have had a real chance with viktor, he was patient, protective, he really cared for him, he really loved vitya and he saw and accepted him for who he was so why yuuri? and I think that's something that happens in the real world, Vitya wasn't ready at the time and the only one who managed to awaken all those feelings in him and help him heal was Yuuri, because they were what the other needed and that's beautiful. , because neither of them was perfect but as you say they complemented each other and it worked because they were compatible and because they WANTED to work for the good of the other when one of them was not perfect. Life just happened that way and that's where it felt right, we all have flaws and virtues.

As you say, no one is just bad or just good, and I believe that sometimes one can be good for someone and bad for someone, in the sense that we are experiencing different things that are sometimes not compatible with what the other person is experiencing , especially when you're not ready to make a change or improve or work on it, and it causes "isn't here"... things to happen in life.

That's what I love so much about NLA, that it's so simple and at the same time so wonderful, because that's life, it's not always fair, not always everything is joy or sadness, and sometimes love is not always where you thought or where "it is easier" to get to, the decisions we make and how we fight our own problems and traumas are ultimately what also builds love, and the support and compatibility that someone has with you to grow together.

I'm happy that that was the essence of what you wanted to show and that it's not just "he's bad and good by nature" or "he's better" "he's worse" (for example with characters like chris, as possible romantic interest of viktor, AND I love victuuri with all I mean..but amazing guy and totally worth it, of course! ). And I love that the victuuri is about that. Love in pure essence and the decisions we make.

I'm very happy to be able to comment more in depth on all this that I thought and of your process as a writer and co-creator of NLA.

Sometimes I look at the way I met my partner and my good friends, and how the circumstances of us all coming together were so precarious and crazy... It ended up being meant to be because we made it so with our own choices and experiences.

Like Viktor said in the 1st stage drama (the Chihoko affair): "It's because of his past that Yuuri is who he is now."

He does speak Saga-ben, the dialect from Saga prefecture, when he's drunk (not just in ep. 10, in Chihoko drama eg., too). In this case, it's not too difficult to understand anyway, because the sentences are simple.

The only exception is "~to yaro?" in the sentence about dance battle. It's "desho?", so "you'll do it, right?", "you'll be my coach if I win, right?", but there was some confusion in the Jp fandom, as to what that means years ago - some people thought that it could mean that Victor first said that he will, and the whole sentence is supposed to mean "you said that you would be my coach if I won the dance battle", probably because of the "to" particle, which can mean "X said that". But if you look "to yaro?" up in a dialect dictionary, it is indeed "desho?".

The rest is understandable for a Japanese speaker, no problem. But if somebody, who isn't used to hearing Japanese pronunciation of English words, would be able to understand "shiizun" as "season" or "koochi" as "coach", I'm not sure 😂 I think, that's why the "Be my coach!" in proper English is there - that part Victor understood for sure 😂

I need someone who can understand spoken Japanese for this one, please:

I'm pretty sure some of what Yuuri says in the banquet flashback in the ep 10 credits is difficult to pick out due to drunk-boy accent. and fanfic tells me he's speaking in a more distinctly Kyushu accent than he does when sober. how much of that is true?

I'm certain someone close enough to overhear him could pick out "Victor", "season", "onsen", "dance battle", and "coach", and of course "Be my coach, Victor!" (and not "Hasetsu", no matter what the English dub says.) but of those, only "onsen" is something Victor wouldn't have understood perfectly well himself. and there's undoubtedly grammar stuff that I haven't a chance of catching but that would be as obvious to someone who knows the language as, say, "after" and "should" are to English-speakers.

so, other than the English words and "onsen", are there any parts of what he's saying that a Japanese-speaking listener who didn't catch the whole sentence would still be certain he said? or anything he's saying that said listener might be unsure which of a couple similar-sounding things he said?

and what exactly does he say about the onsen? just that his parents run it and Victor should visit after the season ends?
