Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: The Bad Guys
So this is yet another Dreamworks movie I've heard nothing but good things about but just never got around to watching for some reason or another. And now that I have watched it, all I can say is what the fuck how did I sleep on this absolute gem of a film for so long???? Its so good, ya'll, SO damn good! So let's get into all of the many reasons why!
The Bad Guys are a group of infamous criminals, made up of the cunning Snake, master of disguise Shark, loose-canon Piranha, hacker Tarantula, and the leader of the pack, Wolf. After getting caught attempting to pull of a daring heist, the Bad Guys pretend to work on going good to pull off an even greater heist... until Wolf begins to wonder if being good might not be so bad after all.
So let me just say, the plot here is brilliant. Like seriously, there were some twists and turns here (especially toward the end) that had me YELLING over how genuis they were. It's extremely tightly crafted, sharply written, and pulled together by an incredibly charming cast that you just love to watch. It's a thrilling ride from start to end and I was excited to see where it would go next with every new scene.
The characters, like I said, are really great! Wolf is a really well-developed lead who goes through a pretty compelling arc, same with Snake (seriously, the fakeout with him toward the end had me in awe, what a total pro) and a good deal of the drama in the film lies between those two. The other Bad Guys are a bit less in focus, but they're still really fun and all play off each other really well too. Also, Diane, the governor??? Holy shit ya'll? She's AMAZING. Not gonna spoil the twist involving her but let me just say she is so damn COOL like oh my god.
This movie does attempt a twist villain but like... idk Marmalade isn't really that much of a twist villain? From the moment he showed up I said to myself "oh, he's the villain isn't he?" and I was proven right, but like... the reveal of how he set the Bag Guys up from the very start was so clever that I couldn't even be upset about it. This tiny motherfucker played them up until the very end where he finally got his comeuppance. Good villain. Not the best, but still, pretty good.
The humor here is pretty fun, with some jokes that genuinely had me laughing out loud. Of course, it couldn't quite help itself with a few fart jokes here and there, which... ermmm aren't quite my up of tea. Still, it balances that humor out well with some pretty compelling drama and a lot of heart that really helps to engage you in the story they're telling here.
Also the animation??? Oh my GOD the way this movie looks is INSANE. Like, just the character designs alone are so fresh and interesting compared to what Dreamworks has done in the past. There's this overall stylization to this movie that's very sharp and unique, and it just makes it a feast for the eyes. The way the characters move too, very fast and snappy, as if they're 2-d characters instead of 3-d. Lots of exagerrated motions and facial expressions, it's all very silly, yes, but it works so well with the tone this movie is trying to pull off.
So yeah, I hella loved this one. I'm so mad at myself for not watching this when it first came out, because its such a joy ride from start to finish. So stylish, so witty, so engaging, and so fun! I had a great time with The Bad Guys, and if you haven't seen it yet, you should, because chances are, you will too.
Rating: 9/10
Verdict: IS THAT FUCKING KINGDOM HEARTS????

Looks like Eddie Murphy has some muscle when it comes to these sorts of things, because DreamWorks is apparently at work on a DONKEY movie, set for release sometime after SHREK 5 comes out.
Murphy did say in a recent interview that he "thinks" SHREK 5 is going to be out next year, but with DreamWorks having three films slotted for 2025 - DOG MAN, BAD GUYS 2, and GABBY'S DOLLHOUSE... I don't think so.
2026 seems right still, plus the first movie turns 25 that year. But Murphy has recorded some lines for it for a few months, so it's closer than not.
Given how well both PUSS IN BOOTS movies did (I get the sense that the first one is kinda-sorta forgotten? It actually did very well way back in 2011), and the sequel was a leggy phenomenon, so I'm not surprised that there'd be some traction on a Donkey movie. The SHREK franchise is as alive as ever some two decades after SHREK came out, and some three decades after the original book by William Steig was published.
I'm wondering if it's going to be more than just "Donkey yuks it up for 90 minutes", but that would still be fun anyhow. After THE LAST WISH, I think it'd be cool to see a Donkey movie be told through his perspective in a way animation can really pull off. And not in the more expected way CG movies, including the SHREKs, often do. THE LAST WISH goes hard on a storybook/fairy tale look and tone, and retains the very Three Musketeers/Spaghetti Western-informed vibe of the first PUSS IN BOOTS. When action happens, there are those little flourishes and such that - to me - make you experience the story the way the character is feeling it. Very much like classic Disney animated films, ironically. Maybe a Donkey movie could do the same, but in a way that really puts you in the head of this wisecracking ass.
Also, is it theatrical? Or something that'll be sent to a streamer? (Either ORION AND THE DARK-style where it's a full-on DWA picture that for whatever reason didn't go to theaters, or MEGAMIND TV Pilot-style where it's made somewhere else w/ a wholly different team and was never meant for the big screen or potential awards.)
If it's a theatrical movie, that would make it, I think, one of the first big-time Western animated movie to spawn theatrical spin-offs based on two separate characters. Theatrical, that is. If any Disney animated feature got a spin-off, it was largely through direct-to-video stuff and that's a whole other clustercuss of its own. ICE AGE recently had that Disney+ Buck Wild thing made at some other studio, as well.
But no, I'm referring to theatrical... Especially if made by the same studio.
I think THE LEGO MOVIE got there first. As pretty much everyone knows, Batman was a character in that movie... And he got his own theatrical movie in 2017 featuring tons of other DC and WB-owned characters, it's the second-ever release in the LEGO MOVIE series. An unusual move in retrospective, LEGO MOVIE 2 probably should've been next, *then* LEGO BATMAN. Warner Bros. made an equally unusual decision to follow that up with THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE towards the end of 2017, which featured *no one* from the previous two movies. It was all characters from the Ninjago line and assorted new faces. It lost money on its release, too... I think doing two spin-off movies about two separate sets of characters before a proper LEGO MOVIE sequel helped hurt that film when it finally came out in 2019... Five years after the first movie. It didn't enjoy any of the success of the original, and Warner Bros. offloaded the franchise - probably sans Batman and such - to Universal... Who, as I understand, are still deep at work on a LEGO MOVIE 3 of sorts.
Worth noting that Warner also had other LEGO MOVIE spin-offs in development before LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART released. A Jorge R. Gutierrez-directed pic called THE BILLION BRICK RACE was one of them. Warners really though they had a whole expanded LEGO MOVIE-verse going on there, and perhaps got lost in that before building a solid base with Emmet Brickowski and friends.
DreamWorks, of course, is making a DOG MAN movie. The DOG MAN books are a spin-off of Dav Pilkey's CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, which DreamWorks adapted into a movie in 2017. DOG MAN may or may not feature the Captain himself.
Illumination's DESPICABLE ME has two MINIONS movies, which cover... Well... The Minions, a whole group. A character unit itself, and young Gru appears in both movies, having a much larger role in the second one. Kinda spin-off/prequel-ish movies... But there's no movie that's just about, say, Lucy or younger Vector or anyone like that. So, that's just one for DESPICABLE ME.
Pixar... TOY STORY has one character-centric spin-off movie in LIGHTYEAR, though that was a wholly different take on Buzz. CARS has one in two PLANES movies about a character who doesn't appear in any of the CARS movies. The PLANES movies were made at Disneytoon Studios by crews who mostly weren't on the CARS movies. John Lasseter is exec producer of them, and wrote the story for the first one. They're by all means direct-to-video type movies made elsewhere, much like the Disney ones of the '90s and '00s, but they got theatrical releases. We almost got a third one that was all about spacecraft, and a fourth one about city transit. We almost had a whole CARS cinematic universe there, with 3/4 of it not being made by Pixar.
So yeah... DreamWorks finally having two separate characters headlining their own movies apart from the larger franchise they come from... Interesting development. Luckily for them, they were four movies into SHREK when PUSS IN BOOTS came out, and they'll be five movies in if DONKEY happens.

WHAT
There is absolutely NO REASON that a sequel to a movie from over a decade ago, which itself was a spin-off of the Shrek movies, should be THIS GOOD, and yet…???
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish goes like this: Puss in Boots, the outlaw hero, is happy to celebrate his skillz and invincibility after once again winning. However, he gets killed in the ensuing revelry. Not a problem! He’s a cat, after all, and he’s got nine lives. Except it turns out that right now he’s on his last life after blowing through his previous eight, and after a close brush with a seemingly invincible enemy, he decides to lay low and give up the life of an adventurer. Until he hears about a quest for the Wishing Star, which will grant a wish to whoever claims it. Puss plans to use the Star to get his lives back. But he’s far from the only one who is after the Wishing Star: along with his old flame Kitty Softpaws, Big Jack Horner, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears are after it for their own reasons.
Also, he’s joined by a therapy dog.
Like many others, I had absolutely no intention of seeing this film when the trailer was released online. I have seen only the first Shrek all the way through (though I have seen lots of the second and third one on TV), and never seen the first Puss in Boots. Dreamworks also hasn’t been at the top of its game in the past few years. Look, How to Train Your Dragon 3 wasn’t *bad* but it was also lacking in that spark, in part because the whole ‘The thing you liked about this series has to go away now’ was a running theme in animated movies for a couple of years and it was old. I didn’t bother with The Boss Baby. I hadn’t seen The Bad Guys but it didn’t particularly interest me, though it seemed like it did fine enough. I saw this one getting good reviews and was confused, but moved on. It wasn’t until I kept seeing rave reviews, and people I knew telling me it was fantastic, that I said, “Okay, let me look into this.”
What. The actual fudge.
This is one of the best things I’ve seen from Dreamworks. This movie is an absolute triumph. This is, in fact, astonishing in its storybook imagery animation, its thrilling action sequences, its complex character development, and dark themes. It’s amazing.
The Shrek spin-off did a story about a hero coming to terms with his own mortality.
[throws up hands in confused but impressed gestures]
HOW???
Aiding this movie is its amazing animation. In the days when Disney has sort of settled on an animation style in their CGI films, and yet is still dominating the market, it’s really cool to see a movie that is playing with how animation. The style of this movie is meant to look much more like the art you’d find in a storybook. It reminds me (and I’m far from the only one to remark this) of Into the Spider-Verse in that it’s trying to copy a specific type of artwork, and there are interesting little tidbits that are really cool if you pay close attention. Puss’s sword has a little impact mark when it hits against other blades, for instance. It feels as if someone has taken colorful pieces of concept art and brought them to life, and given how much I love concept art, I very much enjoyed this animation style.
Building on that animation point: the action scenes in this film are top-notch? The final duel between Puss and the Wolf is one of the best sword fight scenes I’ve seen in years, especially out of a new movie. Many movies don’t seem to know or care how to do a great, fast-paced sword fight, and it’s rare to see it in an animated movie either. This movie somehow managed it. In fact just about ALL the fight scenes are fantastic to watch, with the sheer amount of energy they have in them.
The performances in the film are pretty great? Antonio Banderas is playing a cartoon cat, and yet he still manages to imbue him with a lot of character? Not only is Puss in Boots an arrogant braggart at the beginning of the story, but he’s forcibly humbled, and he goes through the wringer, and Banderas’s performance reflects that pretty well. When Puss is having panic attacks at the sound of the Wolf’s creepy whistle, it’s surprisingly effective how much you feel his terror.
I also don’t think that a couple of the other performers sounded like themselves? That sounds like a dumb thing to say, but with celebrity voice actors, they’re sometimes directed to just talk into the microphone without doing anything with their voices. But I didn’t find that Kitty Softpaws sounded too much like normal Salma Hayek or that Goldilocks sounded much like Florence Pugh. Then again, I’m not overly familiar with their voices so maybe I’m wrong on that count.
That being said, I ‘ve see quite a lot of people claiming that John Mulaney’s turn as the villain Big Jack Horner was especially amazing, and while he does well, and he makes an entertaining villain, I didn’t find his work to be something particularly incredible. I wasn’t blown out of the water by his performance, is all I’m saying.
Also this movie’s hilarious. I haven’t emphasized that enough, but it is a really funny movie. Some of the humor in the film was surprisingly dark? I know that animated films sometimes can have dark humor, but there’s a lot of it here, and most of it lands. The humor fits the tone of the movie, I suppose, but it threw me off how many of the gags in the film involved things like murder and casual violence.
I fully expected Dreamworks to crank out a cookie-cutter sequel, and I should have known better. When Dreamworks is trying, really trying, they knock it out of the park. They probably knew they had to if they wanted to release a sequel to a movie from over a decade ago and make it land with audiences. It would probably have been better had I seen the previous Shrek and Puss in Boots movies, but it’s not strictly necessary, as this entry has enough explanation of past events that you won’t need it.

Oh, that ask thingy I was so happy I got tagged in and never got to fill in!
You thought. Well guess what! Today imma gonna fill in the ask questions I got from @advena87 (thank you again for challenging me!) But since I’m a book reader - and I also think my follows and followers should be more encouraged to post book stuff - I’m gonna try and fill in as book content-y as I can. Here we go! Skellige Isles or the continent?
I love the continent, especially Lyria, Rivia & Dol Blathana, but this is definitely gonna be Skellige for me. I love how raw and unbiased people are over there. They also provide equal rights to women. Which I think is far more developed than one would think when it comes to the Skellige Isles.
Velen or Toussaint?
This is going to be Toussaint for me. Not because of the visionairy (which is, btw, flawless in TW3-B&W) but because in the books we spend a good chunk of the story there, and we really get to know how society and the monarch works.
Novigrad or Beauclair?
I would definitely say “the centre of the world” Novigrad. The “free city” Novigrad. It’s so lively there, everyone finds the business they need. But I also like the dark side of it. The beggars, the sewers, the crying Eternal Fire zealots.
Sleeping at Corvo Bianco or meditating under a tree?
This is gonna be meditating & sleeping under a tree, simply because there’s no “Corvo Bianco” in the books. I really loved that ending, for me though Geralt stayed on the path.
Inns or Brothels?
Inns have such nicer ahmosphere. I love the candlelit chandeliers, the cheap beer, the people giving you various looks. Music! Geralt always has a nice meal whenever he goes to an inn. I wish that for him.
Caves or Ruins?
There’s not much caves in the books, ruins however, plenty. Ruins.
High or low difficulty?
I guess noone prepared me for the emotional trauma that was the battle at Stygga, so high?
Going back to old save: yay or nay?
I have a bookmark.
Mods: yay or nay?
Sadly I can’t apply any filters to books, but the good thing is I don’t have to! I have imagination to help me.
Mini-map or no mini-map?
I did actually use a map of the continent while I was reading. I marked the route each of the main characters took.
Roach or Fast travel?
Roach, because she’s the best friend to Geralt when there’s no Jaskier/Dandelion(/Kökörcsin) around.
Roads or Boats?
There was always something bad going on when Geralt got on a boat, so... Roads.
Specters or Relicts?
Ooh, I love an old type leshen. And godlings. And dopplers. And czorts. Definitely a relict girl here! o/
Beasts or Hybrids?
I would say hybrids. Especially sirens and succubi.
Necrophages or Vampires?
Vampires all the way! You didn’t think I would forget about our best boy Regis, ya? (B&W vampires are awesome too, Orianna is an all-time favourite of mine)
Orgroids or Elementa?
Since there’s not much ogroid in the books, I would definitely go with the elementa, because of djinns & genies.
Draconids or Cursed Ones?
Draconids! At least we get quite a few in the books! The cursed ones Geralt meet in the saga he doesn’t kill, rather turn them back to normal.
The Caretaker or the Crones?
I loved the Crones! Chilling & ruthless, but very well written characters. And their boss theme is absolute bop.
Botchlings or spotted Wights?
Spotted wights, I guess.
Godlings or Trolls?
Godlings are kind of adorable.
Sirens or Harpies?
Sirens, please and thank you.
Killing or sparing?
Depends on the situation. With Vilgefortz? Kill any day. Renfri? Protect at all costs.
Dijkstra or Roche?
As much as I love Vernon Roche, I must aknowledge the fact he’s not a book character so Dijkstra all the way.
Vesemir or Crach an Craite?
I really loved Crach even in the books, from a young chap (at Pavetta’s 15th birthday) to someone who even woo’d Yen xD I think the Witcher 3 gave him a worthy-mighty route to embrace. Shame he had to go so early.
Eskel or Lambert?
I was always more fond of Eskel’s quiet and composed manner. He’s like a true brother to Geralt.
Keira or Philippa?
Philippa all the way. I just really love characters involved in intrigues by choice, and when it comes to the Lady Owl, she’s like the absolute queen.
Cerys or Hjalmar?
Ok so, this is difficult, because Cerys was not in the books, unlike Hjalmar. But I really liked what they did with them in TW3 and how they did it, and I don’t even feel like they’ve overwritten the canon or anything. I always felt like Cerys’ calm composed manner and playing on the safe side attitude would ensure Skellige would survive. Even if they’re not going down in history as great invaders or warriors.
Syanna or Anarietta?
Since Syanna was not in the books, but even if she was, I wouldn’t like her, I have to go with Annarietta who’s been the brattiest, sassiest and most spoiled young princess in the books. But that didn’t stop me from liking her. Yen or Triss?
Yennefer is the queen of this story. I get where the game Triss likers are coming from, but since I’m here to spread book awesomeness, where she’s been the absolute worst (and not even a proper love interest to Geralt [even Fringilla was a longer relationship to him!]) this wasn’t a hard choice at all. Yennefer is the best for Geralt.
Ciri or Geralt?
I’ve always been genuinely more immersed in Geralt’s side of the story, talking strictly about books, than Ciri’s.
Regis or Dettlaff?
Regis. Never gonna com a time when I don’t pick Regis.
Olgierd von Everec or Gaunter O’Dimm?
Olgierd, I guess. I can definitely see someone like him in the books.
Olgierd von Everec or Iris von Everec?
Iris deserved better.
Shani or Dandelion?
Ok so, there’s no witcher without Dandelion/Jaskier/Kökörcsin, and I absolutely love this bloody Casanova, but, strictly speaking in book context, Shani doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. She’s really complex and been through a lot. Our bard has too, true, but he’s more like the comic relief of the saga.
Johnny or Sarah?
Sarah!
Sorceresses or Witchers?
Sorceresses. I guess. Life is much more easier if you’re a sorceress.
Druids or the local holy man?
Druids all the way! Especially those of Skellige! My king Mousesack . I love him.
Food or Swallow?
Swallow. Not gonna use it though, but this one’s closer to the book canon.
Decoctions or Potions?
Potions is on the canon side.
Hunting for diagrams or finding them per chance?
Finding them by chance, I guess. Book Geralt has no time to hunt diagrams amidst all this canon shitstorm xD
Saving coin or spending coin?
Saving.
Looting or buying?
I guess looting is more on the canon side here.
Upsetting the guards or following the rules?
Never upset the guards.
Igni or Axii?
Axii!
Yrden or Aard?
Yrden!
Signs or blade oils?
Signs!
Crossbow or fists?
Crossbow is more book canon I guess.
Settling down or staying on the path?
Book Geralt doesn’t like staying put, so staying on the path.
Gwent Cards or Swords?
Gwent cards.
Beard or no beard?
No beard. It’s canon. “Puss Peepers” or “Mutant”?
I have never in my book reading journey read Puss Peepers. Mutant, however... Hey! Thank you very much again for the callout, @advena87 and I hope everyone who actually read through that abominatin enjoyed my answers. And that they weren’t too book-posh. If yes, I’d say I’m sorry, but really I’m not. K BYE

11 Questions
I got tagged by @not-actually-ur-sassygayfriend so here it goes!
Rules:
Copy the rules.
Answer the questions given to you
Create 11 more for the next person to answer; tag 11 people
Questions asked of me:
1. What other languages do you wish you knew? What other countries do you wish you could visit or live in?
That’s two questions Warren ;P But anyway: I wish my Spanish was better, and I wish I knew Italian (because I love the sound of it) and sign language (it’d be practical). I’d like to live in Jamaica for a time and learn about my heritage more, and I’d like to visit England, Spain, and Italy. And Canada! I really want to visit Canada someday! ;P
2. What sport/art do you do for therapy?
I pace sometimes when I’m anxious, and I often put my emotions into my writing. It’s probably why I’m so inconsistent with my writing habits, because I have to wait for the right mood to be upon me sometimes ^^’
3. I’ve been asking this around a lot. What kind of hands do you have? Answer with a short story about a scar, callus, etc.
I like to think I have writer’s hands. They’re quick and nimble on a keyboard. I’m the fastest typer in my family, and if given the right pen or pencil, I take a lot of delight in writing (on a side note, my favorite pen currently is the Precise V5 rolling ball extra fine ink pen, which you can get at Target for like $5 for a pack of 3. They don’t look like much, but they’re beautiful to write with!). As for scars, I have a large scar on my right wrist that’s shaped sort of like a backwards letter “L” written in a bubble font. I’m actually really fond of the scar, and there is a small story behind it. I got it after school on the second-to-last day of fifth grade. A bunch of girls from my girl scout troop were racing in front of the school. I thought I’d be fastest if I ran on the grass. I ended up tripping in a pothole that was hidden under the grass and ended up falling onto the pavement. I scraped that wrist pretty bad, but I thought nothing of it. The scrape though became infected (or nearly infected? It wasn’t healing well and the surrounding skin was all white and puss-y, and the doctor did stress the possibility of infection. All I remember was worrying that my hand was going to be amputated). It eventually healed, but we had to clean it daily including pouring rubbing alcohol over it every night and letting it dry out unbandaged. I hated that part >.<
4. When you get involved with a story, what’s the most important thing to you? (Story? Character development? Setting? etc...)
I’d say description and detail. That can apply to all of those aspects, but I love stories that are so vivid with description that they just leap off the page at you. I like to immerse myself in the story, so the more descriptive and detailed, the better!
5. Boom. You have powers. Are they magic or science? What kind and why?
I was literally just thinking about this 2 days ago! Ok, so I would have the power to make myself look any way I want. My main thought for this is that I can make myself look tough and intimidating if I’m in a situation that would normally make me, a tiny, unimposing girl, feel unsafe and insecure, but let’s face it: I’m pretty much going to use this power to give myself a big, fluffy tail when I’m in the comfort of my own home!
6. Into the Beautiful Grim. It’s a painting by Mike Lim, a.k.a. Daarken. I get a lot of judgy looks when I say it’s one of my favorites before I explain the backstory behind the piece. Short version, it was the centerpiece of an auction to raise money for his wife’s cancer treatment. The woman in the frame is (supposedly?) his wife, and the blue wisps (butterflies? flowers?) are the unknown hopes in the future. Do you have a piece of work that you love and adore but have to explain the backstory to people when you show them?
I can’t really say so, no. :/
7. Look in the mirror or take a selfie. What’s your favorite thing about yourself in this image?
I’ve really started to love my natural hairstyle and my eyebrows within the last couple years. See, my family taught me to hate my hair and my brows because they think my hair is wild and under groomed (it’s not; it’s just really prone to being mussed by the wind, but it has lovely curls and volume) and my eyebrows are too thick (my family is notorious for really thick eyebrows, but they prefer thin eyebrows; I think they’re bold and eye-catching and just need a bit of cleaning around the edges to make them pop more). I’ve just really started to value my own natural features more, and everything I love about myself is something that my family hates.
8. As some people know, I get lost staring in people’s eyes. What color are your eyes, and what kind of story do they tell?
You know what color my eyes are! ;P But for the sake of people who don’t: they’re dark brown, and I like to imagine they tell a story of strength and self-reliance tempered through pain and fear.
9. Do you have a favorite quote? What is it? Does it remind you of a person or place? And would you consider getting a tattoo of it?
“If you are a dreamer come in If you are a dreamer a wisher a liar A hoper a pray-er a magic-bean-buyer If youre a pretender com sit by my fire For we have some flax golden tales to spin Come in! Come in!” - Shel Silverstein
This quote is my favorite. It inspires me and makes me think of imagination and creativity, particularly when it comes to writing. For all that, I don’t think I would ever get a tattoo of it. I’m very reluctant to consider tattooing myself, though I find tattoos to be beautiful and admire them on others.
10. Go tell somebody who’s made a difference in your life that you love them. Post their response.
He’s my boyfriend, so of course he said he loves me back ;P
11. This might be feeding my ego, and you can just send an answer to me in an ask instead. What’s your favorite interaction with me or with somebody else here on this website?
I really loved all the times we went out together back in senior year. You helped me keep going at some of my lowest times.
My Questions for Others:
1. They say there’s two sides to every story, so what’s your side of the story of how we met?
2. What’s the most useful life hack that you’ve ever come across?
3. If you could make one fictional character real, who would you choose and why?
4. What song are you currently or most recently obsessed with? Bonus: what song makes you think of your OTP?
5. What is your favorite kind of weather? Why?
6. Brag a little! What’s an achievement you’re proud of?
7. What do you think is your best quality? What’s one quality you wish you could improve?
8. What’s the kindest thing someone’s ever done for you?
9. Think about the best fictional villain you’ve ever seen. What made them the best at being a villain?
10. Pick one of the questions I answered above to answer yourself!
11. Pick one of the questions I asked to ask me!
I tag:
@blackwaterbbq, @arianwen44, @blissfullyintoxicated, @not-actually-ur-sassygayfriend (yes I know you tagged me to begin with, so you don’t have to come up with more questions or tag anyone else ;P), and anyone else who would like to answer my questions!

So, I got tagged by @everyonenods to do this, so here goes!
1. What is mostly hated show/movie you actually like?
Had to think a lot about this and..I would actually have to go with the Netflix series All Hail King Julien/King Julien Exiled. (I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out people) I know it’s clearly a spin off for a franchise that has like three sequels and such, but..it’s actually a good series. The first season is rather episodic, and goodness some episode feel like a crack fic.
But it does have a bunch of fun characters, Clover (an original female character in the series) being one of the best, and there’s actually a plot that does appear and really takes off in the last few seasons. Heck, there series has quite a few fun references to other dreamworks movies/shows, The HTTYD2 being a big one for me.
If you don’t like Madagascar or King Julien, then yeah you’ll probably won’t enjoy it, but for me I found it to be an enjoyable series to watch, especially if you need something silly to take your mind off of things for a bit.
2. What is your favorite anime?
I have quite a few, but an all time forever favorite would have to be Slayers. My older brother got me into the series when I was 16 and it was really the first fandom that I wrote fanfic for (and boy did I learn a lot about writing/storytelling while doing so.) and lead me to meeting some lifelong friends (waves to them you guys know you who are. ^_~)
I had enjoyed Sailor Moon, Pokemon and Digimon growing up, but Slayers was the first anime that REALLY exposed me more to what anime was in general.
3. Is there a show or movie you somehow can’t stop recommending?
Okay, another netflix show The Adventures of Puss in Boots. Again, at first glance it looks like a cheap spin off show and the first season really doesn’t have too much going on, but boy at the end of the second season does it end on a cliff hanger and then the plot just keeps going on there.
Also, since Puss is the only canon character in the show, it leaves the budget free for more original characters and it has a high number of female characters. It has Dulcinea who is probably my favorite character in the show and arguably goes through the most character development, but then there’s also the cow barkeeper with a very questionable past, female goblins (and they’re not badguys either which is rare), the Spinx and heck the latest season we see the Nether Realm which is basically run by women (army of female cyclops, a fairy queen, a female wizard, oh AND WE HAVE BOTH WITCHES AND FEMALE WIZARDS! IT’S NOT EVEN QUESTIONED).
There is actually an interesting plot, cool villains like the Blood Wolf who appears later, lots of mythology references, it’s honestly a show that I think deserves more credit than it gets. It’s far from perfect, and like I said first season doesn’t have much going for it, but I would recommend it to fantasy fans.
4. What fictional character you would defend to death?
I have too many to list them all, but let’s go with the space mice. They nearly don’t get as much love and attention as they deserve. I loved them as a kid in the original show, and I was just gleeful to see them in VLD.
5. What actor or actress are you attracted to?
Hmm...none really? There are characters some actors play that I get attached to, but I never really thought too much about that. (This is probably because I’m demi-sexual and thus, I don’t put too much thought into that in general)
6. What is your favorite character design?
I am loving the fun designs from Kirakira PreCure a la Mode they fuse magical girl outfits with animals. I saw like the first two episodes of this series and I really need to get around to checking out more.
7. What is the worst fictional character you’ve ever seen?
There are characters I’ve certainly hated, but the top worst...I would probably say Naraku or at least that villain type. The kind of villain that is all knowing and always wins, and not in the fun Xanatos from Gargoyles style. They just annoy me like crazy.
8. What is the worst fandom in your opinion?
I think all fandoms have good points and bad points honestly. So, I can’t really say there’s a worst fandom.
9. Where would you like to live the most?
In Canada where I currently am with @gullwhacker. We’re pretty content in our house in the woods. LOL
10. What kind of people do you like the most?
People who are friendly, creative, compassionate, kind and willing to lend an ear when you want it.
11. What kind of people you hate the most?
Narcissistic. I’ve had friends like that before and I just can’t click with them very well for various reasons.
Now for my questions:
1. Do you have a toy that you’ve kept from your childhood?
2. What is your favorite dessert flavor?
3. What’s the best way to get you interested in a movie/tv show?
4. What is your first memory?
5. What would be your dream job?
6. Is there a book you wish to see made into a movie/tv show?
7. What is the worst adaptation of a book you’ve seen done in a movie/tv show?
8. What is the worst advice you can give for telling a story?
9. What mythical animal would you like for a pet?
10. If money wasn’t an issue, where would you go for a vacation?
11. What fantasy world would you like to visit?
@mercy-angel-09 @blacklionshiro @cutekittenlady @isabeau25 @ladydouji @inchoatewaffle @ickaimp @maychorian @asatira @savvyliterate @nissasjackolantern

25 Negative Effects of Technology
Here are 25 negative effects technology can have:
1. Isolation
Social isolation is characterized by a lack of contact with other people in normal daily living, such as, the workplace, with friends and in social activities. We isolate ourselves by walking around in our own little world, listening to our iPods or staring at the screen of the latest mobile device even when we are around other people. Studies have shown that people who are socially isolated will live shorter lives.
2. Lack of Social Skills
The use of online social media outlets causes us to meet face-to-face with much less frequency resulting in a lack of much needed social skills. We lose the ability to read body language and social cues in other people.
3. Obesity
The more time people are spending engrossed in video games, talking to friends online and watching funny cat videos on YouTube, they are spending less time being active or exercising. Also the likelihood of mindlessly eating unhealthy food increases as people are hypnotized by the latest episode of Honey Boo Boo.
4. Depression
Technology creates the perfect recipe for depression with the lack of human contact, overeating and lack of exercise. There is a reason the use of antidepressants are on the rise and the blame can’t be completely dumped on the pharmaceutical companies. They aren’t carting people into the doctor’s office and force feeding them the pills. This isn’t to say that depression isn’t a real problem, but some people could cure their depression by living a healthier lifestyle.
5. Poor Sleep Habits
Some of the negative effects of technology can be linked to the effect it has on sleep habits. We get sucked into online activities that keep us up too late and the constant stream of information can make it difficult to turn off our brains. Also, the ambient glow from screens can affect the release of melatonin, the sleep chemical. Keeping technology out of the bedroom would be a very healthy habit to acquire.
6. Pollution
With the rapid-changing world of electronics and technology, the turnover rate for upgrades is staggering. This constant stream of out with the old, in with the new is adding to the levels of toxicity in our air and land. E-waste is not always disposed of properly, causing deadly chemicals to leach into the ground. Plants that manufacture the electronics are emitting toxic fumes into the air. Plus there is little to no regulations on the disposal of personal E-waste.
7. Increased Bullying
The use of technology has caused an increase in bullying and escalated the degree of severity. Kids are no longer able to escape their tormentors once they reach the safety of their own homes. Bullies infiltrate the security of their victims’ homes through online avenues. It is also easier to get more kids involved in bullying because people are more likely to say things online that they wouldn’t say in person. The increase in cyber-bullying has also led to an increase in teen suicides.
8. Lack of Privacy
The internet has stripped the world of privacy. Long gone are the days of having an unlisted telephone number and staying offline to keep your information safe from prying eyes. With a few flicks on a keyboard the average person can find anyone’s address and contact information. For those with more sinister intentions, the use of phishing, viruses and hacking helps to find any information they wish to obtain. Plus, people have no sense of privacy online. They don’t think twice about tweeting every move they make, freely giving out their location on Google Map and putting their entire life story on Facebook.
9. Higher Level of Deceit
On the flip side of having no privacy, people use the internet to deceive others. Most people don’t dig too deeply when doing a search on someone to check them out. By creating a few false profiles, people are able to pretend to be whomever they want. People are being “catfished” on dating sites. Hell, you could be talking to someone on the FBI’s top ten most wanted list and not realize it until you see them getting arrested on the news.
10. Warped Sense of Reality
Using the internet as an escape from real life is very easy to do. In real life you only speak to a few people each day, there’s no Photoshop or avatar for the reflection in your mirror, bills must be paid and saying smartass things is frowned upon. However, online you are a freaking rock star! You have enough “friends” to form a small country, you look great in your pics or you have a kickass avatar, plus you get rewards or points for saying clever things (more if the clever thing is also mean-spirited). Unfortunately we must live in the real world whether we like it or not.
11. Stress
Constantly being “plugged in” and “connected” causes an extra layer of stress that wasn’t present before the overuse of technology.
12. Blackberry/iPhone Thumb
Tendonitis in the thumb, a.k.a. Blackberry/iPhone Thumb, is a form of repetitive strain injury caused by the frequent use of thumbs to press buttons on mobile devices. The same injury can also be obtained from playing too many video games.
13. Lack of Social Boundaries
Much in the same way that people over share on social media sites, there is an increasing tendency to cross social boundaries. Cyber stalking someone or sending unsolicited nude photos are examples of grossly crossing social boundaries.
14. Lack of Sexual Boundaries
Exposure to sexual content is more likely to happen at a much younger age. Before the internet the only chance a child had of being exposed to pornography was if their dad didn’t hide his Playboy magazine well enough. Now, well, let’s just say you pray your filters are doing their job when your kid searches for “Puss and Donkey” from Shrek.
Sexting is also a concern with technology being used at such a young age. There is no way in hell a girl would have taken a nude photo of herself and handed it to a guy before the popularity of texting. Yet, using your phone to snap a quick boob shot and texting it to your boyfriend seems to be no big deal. If you wouldn’t print the picture out and hand it to the guy, then you shouldn’t text it. And guys — girls do not want pictures of your penis. So stop sending them.
15. Lack of Social Bonds
Creating a lasting bond with other people requires face-to-face interaction. The more we isolate ourselves with technology the fewer bonds we will form. People are expected to do more work at home which takes away time they would be spending with their families. Also, younger people prefer communicating online versus face-to-face. When people are in the same room and communicating via text or instant messaging instead of speaking to each other, there’s a problem.
16. Constant Distraction
When we are focused on a device instead of what’s going on around us we miss a great deal. Think of the number of times you have been texting or talking to a friend and missed the opportunity to flirt with the hot guy standing beside you. There is also a rise in the number of injuries incurred by people texting while walking.
17. Neck and Head Pain
Constantly looking down at devices can cause neck pain and over time will cause the neck to lose its natural curve. Eyestrain can also cause headaches, blurred vision and migraines.
18. Shortened Attention Span
The use of social media has shortened our attention span from 12 minutes to 5 minutes. Constant news feeds, getting information in 140 characters and videos that are 10 minutes or less has literally rewired our brains. People who are online an average of 5 hours a day have trouble remembering people’s names, forget pots on the stove and even their own birthday.
19. Addiction
People are not only dependent on technology they are also addicted to it. Studies have shown that when cell phones are taken away subjects heard or felt fathom vibrations, continuously reached for phones that weren’t there and became fidgety and restless. These are some of the same withdrawal symptoms you would expect from doing drugs.
20. Lack of Empathy
The constant stream of violent scenes on video games, TV, movies and YouTube causes people to become desensitized to destruction of any kind. The normalizing of bad things happening and the culture of narcissism created by social media creates a society of people who lack empathy. When people stop caring, the world goes to hell in a hand basket.
21. More Violence
After people lose empathy and are accustomed to violence, it becomes the social norm. Teenage girls are videoing themselves violently beating another girl; the number of school shootings are rising and videos of people attacking homeless people are a few examples of violent behavior caused by media.
22. Higher Energy Consumption
Although individual devices are becoming more energy efficient, the increased overall use is causing a higher consumption of energy. People don’t turn their devices off; they keep computers on or plugged in, mobile devices charging and televisions plugged in. Also manufacturing all of these high tech toys causes an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
23. Developmental Issues in Children
Children are using more technology now than they have ever used in the past. All of the negative effects that social media and television is having on adults are far greater when it comes to the developing minds of children. There is no way to know what long term effect technology will have on our children because this is the first generation to have unlimited access.
24. Neurosis
Technology causes people to suffer from mental and emotional disturbances, such as anxiety, phobias and delusions, which are all symptoms of neurosis. Being convinced you’re very ill after looking up strange diseases on WebMD or thinking you are famous because you have had a viral video are a couple of ways technology neurosis manifests itself.
25. Loss of Hearing and Eyesight
Using headphones and ear buds can cause people to lose their hearing over time. Likewise, straining your eyes looking at computer and device screens can cause people to need glasses much earlier in life.
Be more mindful of the time you spend using technology. If you have longer conversations with Siri than you do with real people, it’s probably time to put the phone down. Force yourself to have an electronic-free day or weekend. When you go on vacation, don’t take your phone or at least put it on “do not disturb”. Creating balance will help you enjoy the benefits of technology without becoming a mindless internet zombie.

Trollhunters Book Review
I did not like this thing. I can see the parts that remained in the animated show, but they improved on so much and for that I am grateful. Because if the show had been anything remotely like the book it would have been vile but even more tragically - BORING.
It goes without saying that everything under the cut will have spoilers.
The Writing Style
First of all, it’s written in first person and it really shouldn’t be. Like most YA novels written in FP it is done incredibly poorly and cheats that narrative several times. This is Third Person Perspective with First Person Pronouns and it’s really REALLY bad at times. The style itself is inconsistent and its hard to follow what’s going on sometimes because characters just drop out of existence/the scene when the author doesn’t have anything for them to contribute.
It is also gross for the sake of being gross. In the show the “Biology” of the trolls is at least consistent. They’re stone creatures. In this? They’re sacs of puss and goo that vomit up their own internal organs in order to be more sneaky. There’s shit, vomit, blood and guts everywhere in this book.
There were several points in this book where I could tell that it was both written by a man and for a male audience. It was very distracting, but that may just be personal preference. I prefer a more neutral narrative voice, I guess. (Think of it like a movie where the camera suddenly pans across the female character’s ass. It’s like that male gaze, in written form, but toned down because it’s YA)
The Characters
Man, you know all those characters in the show and how you love them and want to keep seeing them grow or have redemptive arcs? *bitter laughter* There is none of that here. Absolutely none, and it’s both frustrating and depressing
Jim
This guy has nothing on Jim Lake. He has no hobbies, no interests, he labels himself as a loser and is quite content to remain that way up until he finds his Magical Calling and suddenly for the first time something is easy and so he loves it. He’s a Gary-Stu, essentially. He is a blank slate for the reader to project themselves onto.
AND HE DOES NOTHING BUT WHINGE!! There is a difference between a character having a realistic reaction to dark circumstances and Whinging. Jim reaches Bad Batman Angst Fic levels about how NOBODY Understands him and he has NOBODY and he must GIVE HIMSELF UP TO THE NIGHT!
That is up until 3/4 of the way through the book when he suddenly starts deciding that being a Trollhunter is amazing (They start winning - that’s what causes his attitude shift), but even then he continues to WHIIIIIINE.
Toby
Toby at least had some redeeming qualities in the show. And you bought that he and Jim were friends in the show. Here? They’re friends because they’re both losers and Jim really isn’t that great a friend to Toby. And since this book is written in Fake First Person, he often gets ignored. Out of Sight, Out of Mind and all that.
Blinky
Oh Fraser Book Troll Dad you certainly came a long way. Blinky in the books is a (mostly) blind Troll that is a tentacle monster. When he starts talking it’s similar to how he does in the show - intellectual - but instead of being gentle, supportive, protective and instructive he....well he’s a condescending asshat. He also drones on and on and on (usually about himself/his dissertation) and there is no sense of companionship between him and Jim, because, well, he doesn’t know him! He’s also more of a fighter than just a scholar in this.
AAARRRGH!!!
AAARRRGH!! is actually female in this. Actually, it mentions that most Troll Warriors are female because they’re more built for it than males. She also has brain damage which was interesting until the book shat itself at the end (Her Brain Damage was caused in her fight with Gunmar when he slammed a boulder into her skull and the remnant remains. And then at the end the remnant is removed and suddenly she can talk “intelligently” again - to quote the book). In place of moments where AAARRRGH!! goes berserk we have her being possessed by Gunmar’s eye, which she ripped out of his head during their battle 45 years ago. Oh, and she eats several of Toby’s cats. Like at least 15 of them (”Three square meals of cat”). And it’s treated as a joke both times it comes up (FUCK YOU BOOK)
Claire
Claire was barely in this except as a love interest (and one other very stupid “surprise” at the end, but we’ll get to that). In this she is Scottish (Not British, as Jim assumed at the beginning of the book). She has wild hair, isn’t stick-thin, is “weird” but still makes friends and is fairly popular. But it turns out she’s living a double life - pretending to be a different person for her parents who want her to be an upstanding, rich, ideal young lady. But her true calling is to be a Trollhunter because like Jim she is from a magical human family of Trollhunters!!! (At least she had training in swordplay/fencing. Unlike Jim who pulled the skills out of his hobbyless and inathletic ass)
Jack
Jack should have been the main character of this book. Period. This story should have nixed Jim in it’s entirety because he was ultimately pointless. Jack meanwhile actually had stakes in the war going on, especially after being involved in it for 45 years. He unwillingly gave up his life as a normal kid to help in putting an end to the murders of nearly two hundred children. He’s frozen in time - a 68 year old man trapped in a 13 year old body - because living with the trolls stopped his aging (It was never properly explained why - it’s just what happened). It’s also his fault for Gunmar being back since instead of striking the killing blow 45 years ago Jack sealed him away. That’s why he stuck around for 45 years, out of a sense of responsibility.
The Major Differences
Jim isn’t the first Human Trollhunter. In fact Human Trollhunters have been around since ancient times and always have been the PRIMARY Trollhunters because up until around 300 years ago ALL Trolls were Gumm-Gumms. No joke. In fact, all of the Trolls in Europe and Asia are STILL Gumm-Gumms and only a group of separatist Trolls and their descendants (Trolls live a long time - 300 years is nothing) who traveled to the Americas are “Good Trolls” who think eating people is bad. And yet they relapse into eating people sometimes too.
Trollhunters are mythical lines of humans whom always historically heeded the call to protect people from Trolls who consider them a nice snack or meal if they take several at a go. One of these families is the Sturges, but since Trollhunting was basically non-existent in America they didn’t uphold any of the history, training, anything. So after tracking down one of the legendary families Blinky and AAARRRGH!! kidnap one kid (they tried for two, but the second one got away) in order to help them fight off Gunmar since the pacifist trolls had forgotten how to fight....Except they had an army and FWHFLIEHGF- IT’S STUPID, MOVING ON!!
And for anybody who likes the Changelings, they are completely different in this and not sympathetic, tragic, or interesting at all. How are they made in the book? By Nullhullers vomiting on the target to create a cast of them which then develops into a copy of that person (Baby) from the vomit and viscera. And then they carry the baby off...to be eaten. Yeah, I hold no notions that those babies weren’t tortured then devoured after being fattened up. Not in this book.
Jim isn’t living with his single mother, he’s living with his single dad. His dad who is a paranoid control-freak who turned their house into a bunker basically. There is a reason for this, his brother - Jack - disappeared when he was young, but it’s spiraled so far out of control it’s really NOT. OKAY. He also only starts coming around after a troll parasite makes him “feel better.” And after all these years when he discovers his brother is still alive he gets very creepy about it. Jim Sr. is no Barbara Lake that’s for sure.
There is no training, not really. Training consists of Jack demonstrating sword moves to Jim Once. ONCE. But that’s enough because magic inherent Trollhunter genes means he memorizes and knows how to perform all of those moves after being shown by someone else doing them once. THAT’S HOW INSTINCT WORKS!!
The Annoying Shit AKA The stuff that made me lose my suspension of disbelief
The Milk Carton Epidemic.
Troll Market is not accessed by magic (except when it is) and it is literally underneath the city. HOW HAS IT NOT BEEN FOUND WHEN IT IS LITERALLY CONNECTED TO THE SEWERS AND YOU CAN HEAR CARS DRIVING OVERHEAD??!! WE DO GO INTO SEWERS! WE MAINTAIN THEM! AS WELL AS ROADS WHICH SOMETIMES REQUIRE CONSTRUCTION!!
Trolls can fully regenerate within a day if their gall bladder is not destroyed (Thank you for getting rid of this, Dreamworks/ Del Toro/ Whoever)
There’s no Magic Armour or Weapons. The only armour anyone wears is by the character Jack and it’s made of scraps like tacs, boom box speakers, book coils, etc. And the “Medallion” is just a trinket that allows the wearer to understand what the Trolls are saying. Because, yeah, they don’t speak a Human sounding language. (That doesn’t get annoying with how it alienates Toby or anything. No siree)
Gunmar the Black was sealed away and Killaheed Bridge will release him....Except how, like I said, Troll Territories are literally underground and they walk through the sewers and old mines(???) to get to where he’s “Stuck.” (Again, THANK YOU for changing this to the Darklands because another dimension I can understand not being able to WALK OUT OF for 45 years)
Steve. STEEEEEEEEVE!!! I hate generic bully characters, but this one takes the cake. He abuses other students in front of teachers and they accommodate him to the point where he is disruptive to other students IN CLASS but they do nothing. He has even less personality here than in the show. And Jim doesn’t stand up to him until near the end because he’s a self-admitted coward, but even THEN He isn’t the one who gives him a verbal smack-down - IT’S CLAIRE. Oh, and turns out he’s a Changeling. So they can kill him at the end. *cough* Male Revenge Fantasy *cough*
THAT ENDING THO
I mean it when I say the ending was a fusion of Chekov’s Guns and Ass Pulls. You remember this thing that was mentioned back at the beginning? How about seventeen different things??? WELL SEE! THEY’RE ALL IMPORTANT TO THE FINALE!! But, Oh, WAIT that isn’t fun enough so here’s a bunch of stuff that wasn’t forshadowed at all (Pulled straight from my ass) but I’m gonna act like makes perfect sense!!!
And then they kiss while covered in and surrounded by blood and gore while Steve is casually killed in the background because I’M Special and SHE’S SPECIAL and that means we’re PERFECT for each other.
Oh what’s that? Did we actually save the day? What happened to the weird guy? AH WELL WHO CARES KISSING DREAM GIRL
No seriously was that half-asses sequel bait because it was just dumb

Rise of the Tomb Raider, a review
(Disclaimer: The following is a non-profit unprofessional blog post written by an unprofessional blog poster. All purported facts and statement are little more than the subjective, biased opinion of said blog poster. In other words, don’t take anything I say too seriously.)
Just the facts, cause you're in a hurry.
Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): 59.99 USD
How much I paid: 29.99 USD (Steam Sale)
Rated: Rated M for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language
How long I played: 7 Hours and some odd minutes completing the main story on Adventurer/Easiest mode.
Microtransactions: Yes. Season Pass available for purchase. Expedition cards that offer bonuses (such as reduced damage or cosmetic changes) can be purchased with in-game credits by completing challenges or with real currency.
What I played on: PC.
Performance Issues: At times, Rise of the Tomb Raider is gorgeous to look at. With a high performing graphics card, there are moments of sweeping beauty from the snow on the ground to Lara's flowing hair. It's too bad that optimization can't stack up. The frame rate goes all over the place. At one point, it's running at a smooth 60 FPS. The next an in-game cutscene occurs and it drops to 30. I got an average of about 45 FPS, depending on the circumstances. One moment the game slowed down and I was forced to restart the checkpoint to get it back to normal speed.
My Personal Biases: I never played the original Tomb Raider games. They didn't seem my cup of tea. But with the reboot occuring, I decided to give this a try after watching the Tomb Raider reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider on Youtube.
My Verdict: It feels like whatever Rise of the Tomb Raider does right, it does so at the cost of what made the franchise so unique. Doing little from the new Tomb Raider reboot, the new franchise is content on taking the archeology genre seriously. Worse still, Lara is stuck being a sour puss and serious individual. I get that the developers want to get away from the funny satire, but Lara's new motivation is so thin, you'd think it was in Anorexics Anonymous. How is it that a franchise so focused on having a female lead, it ends up making Lara Croft, one of the famous video game icons, into the blandest character in this story? With a short campaign and a few modes, Rise of the Tomb Raider is better off as a rental or something you'd get on sale.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, a review
And so, we return to Tomb Raider. In her last adventure, Lara Croft, attempted to escape an island of crazed cultists and mercenaries while finding her inner strength to survive. Now, the sequel takes place one year later with a more proactive Lara, dedicated to restoring her father's besmirched name. But, when a rival faction called the Order of Trinity is led by a madman named Konstantin (Because spelling Constantine correctly is for CONFORMISTS, MAN! Let's show up the establishment by spelling it with a K!), Lara must use her survival instincts to ensure this next adventure isn't her last.
Not much has changed since the last time Lara went on an adventure. She platforms, trudges through environments, crafts new weapons with whatever resources she can find and depopulates the nearest area of wildlife and/or mercenaries. It's your average 3rd person shooter with a bit of platforming and scaling for good measure.
Just like the last game, completing challenges (such as performing a number of stealth skills) will cause Lara to level up, unlock new skills and scavenging parts may unlock a weapon upgrade such as reducing reload time or doing more damage.
The game also has its share of puzzles, but most of them are fairly straightfoward. I usually need a guide to get through puzzles, but in this game, I only needed them once.
But while the gameplay is solid, I found myself getting bored whenever the cutscenes started showing up.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is gorgeous at times. Just staring at the blowing show while Lara trudges through is at times awe inspiring and beautiful. It's too bad the framerate sometimes dips while playing it. (I think when Lara and her NVIDAworks hair is on the screen, the framerate drops). While it's stable at times, I noticed the framerate dip when there's multiple enemies or weather effects on screen. Other times, when transitioning from gameplay to cutscene, it drops to 30 frames per second.
I got the season pass version of this, which included all the DLC, such as an extended adventure where Lara faces Baba Yaga. One of the adventures, Blood Ties, involves Lara rumaging around her estate in an attempt to find a will so she can claim possession from the house before her uncle kicks her out. (Riveting. What's the next DLC? Lara getting audited and she has to find that one W-2 form before the bank forcloses on the house?) The other is Lara's Nightmare, a survival mode in which Lara has limited resources and has to fight through hordes of zombies to get better weapons and survive. Throughout the game, the player can unlock 'cards' which can give Lara more advantages or disadvantages to survive teh challenge.
You can do a lot worse than Rise of the Tomb Raider at the price I got. But even putting aside the technical missteps, it feels like Lara is the least interesting person in this game. The old Lara Croft might have been sexist and problematic, but at least she was interesting, at least she was alive. What exactly is keeping this Lara Croft from being another Katniss Everdeen?
It's funny. In an attempt to make Lara the strongest character in the game, she instead becomes the blandest character in the franchise. Not sure that's a worth while trade off.
