HELLO please tell me about your cd collection?? i would love to hear about it genuinely
HAIII BELL!!! i am more than happy to talk about my cds!!!
i included pics of my current collection 🕺!
i’ve been collecting them most of my life. i got given a cd player at a young age which is why i started collecting. as a kid it was mostly so fresh & now hits of summer cds that are still somewhere in the house (also alvin & the chipmunks).
these days i collect them because my car is old and doesn’t have aux or bluetooth so cds and the radio get me through. i’ve included pics of my glovebox, the ones that live in a bag cause i have too many to fit in said glovebox & my current listen. i’ll just list them as they appear and where i got them from!!
gorillaz, the now now- bought first hand. at the time i was listening to it almost daily
gorillaz, demon days- actually belongs to my sister. she doesn’t have a cd player so it judt lives in my car for when we go on drives
twenty one pilots, trench- a gift for my birthday last year. i have most of tøps discography and i was obsessed with it when it released (saw them in concert & everything)
my chemical romance, the black parade- found this one in an op shop. there’s a few i got at the same time, some emo must’ve donated their collection in one go. love this album its one i listen to a lot
panic! at the disco, a fever you cant sweat out- also found in the op shop haul!
panic! at the disco, pretty odd- another op shop haul find. i didn’t listen to this album a load back then compared to the rest of their stuff but its one of my faves now
my chemical romance, three cheers for sweet revenge- shocking news, found this in the op shop haul!
bastille, all this bad blood- at some point during my teens i spend my pocket money on this. definitely glad i still have it, there’s so much music on that album & i still love bastille
twenty one pilots, blurryface- another one i spent my pocket money on!!
twenty one pilots, vessel- another pocket money purchase
fall out boy, folie à deux- found in the op shop haul. didn’t even listen to this album at the time & i forgot i had it until way after i fixated on it and then went through my collection again
fall out boy, infinity on high- another op shop find, very fun find!! was a fave at the time
fall out boy, american beauty/american psycho- op shop haul find!!
fall out boy, save rock and roll- op shop haul find!!!
my chemical romance, danger days- my brother found this one in an op shop for me
will wood and the tapeworms, everything is a lot- bought this one online when he dropped the last of the original pressings a few years back. its signed but the signature is rubbing off a bit
will wood, in case i make it- i got this one when i backed the album when he was fundraising for it
the libertines, up the bracket- i think my mum gave this to me, i’ve never listened to it lol
janelle monáe, the archandroid- dad gave this to me. one of my favourite albums of all time
sara bareilles, whats inside: songs from waitress- this was a pocket money buy. i think i bought this before i actually listened to the waitress musical? so it was my introduction to it and then waitress was what made me fall in love with musical theatre
the hush sound, like vines- found this in a record shop. was very excited, i was playing one of their songs on repeat at the time
pulp, different class- mum gave me this one as well
the breeders, cannonball- my dad got it for my brother who didn’t want it and i slid in like hi, yes i love the breeders, this is mine bye.
troye sivan, wild- a pocket money buy. i really wanted blue neighbourhood but they only had this ep so its what i got
sara bareilles, the blessed unrest- another pocket money buy, i had a huge sara bareilles phase at some point in highschool
the scary jokes, retinal bloom- bought this one in one of the packs when the album was about to be dropped. gawd i love the scary jokes
the scary jokes, burn pygmion!!! a better guide to romance- what i listened to todayyy. probably my number one album ever this was a christmas gift!!
theres two fob cds i skipped cause they’re just a compilation & cd that all the songs on are on my other cds.
theres so many more that have come and left my collection but this is where its at now and i can’t waiiiit to find more!! especially w my damn car. NOW TELL ME ABOUT YOURS (please ^3^!)

excerpt from The Libertines (2019)
2012
Marcelle Trahern was raised by two cunts with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a term derived from the original Munchausen syndrome itself. If one has Munchausen syndrome by proxy, it means a caregiver (in this case, the godmother of Marcelle), chooses to refrain from giving their charges the right health, supplements and nutrients to keep them alive. In fact, they make them worsen with sickness and degradation. Subtly, so the good doctor won’t notice they’re causing the illness for their charges. The first bitch had decided to poison her subtly instead. Marcelle’s godmother favored ipecac. In their small village, church was a mandatory service where all girls had to see the Lord Jesus Christ be praised or crucified on film. A montage of filmy sunlight and a golden cross shone from an array of manipulative Christian imagery, perceived on an overhead projector.
Marcelle went every Wednesday and Sunday in a grey stone building with elaborate brick arcs painted black outlining the stained glass windows. The broadcast room was like an insidious revelation opening up a nightmare to the eyes of sensitive Marcelle, without the abrasive steel to pry a pair of eyes open. Especially when the topic was eternal damnation or the crucifixion of Jesus. It was like a metaphorical film lobotomy. They just stayed peeled open, unable to shut or fall asleep for any reason. Nanny Cravat insisted she stay awake. She favored those antiquated neckbands.
The girls sat around her in stiff, ungraceful lines, backs upright or slouching depending on the girls’ preference to posture. Ms. Winifred Scarlet, who had been killing off children in her home for three years, took Marcelle in at eleven years old the year her mother died and Marcelle was never able to know the woman by heart in a way her memory could rely upon. Winifred was a registered foster mother and she was ailing. Marcelle killed her foster mother (and made the police and medical examiner rule the death as a suicide). She sang “Don’t Fear the Reaper” in her choir voice while spoon-feeding Winifred. “A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down,” Marcelle sang. She gagged on the Drano and no longer said the words Marcelle needed to hear: “You should be ashamed of yourself,” “You should be grateful,” “Why didn’t you try harder?” Winifred was involved in a canned-laughter filled television broadcast again for that last comment, a boring, banal comedy Winifred needed to have Marcelle watch with her before bed.
On March 24, a clear, shiny spring morning, Marcelle knew that she had no one to rely upon any better by the time the next foster mother came around to raise her. She was a distant harridan of a woman with a thin, pert mouth shut tight at church and open like a wrathful shrew to chastise Marcelle at home.
“See that window?” said Nanny Cravat, her second godmother: a malevolent, Puritan woman with brown hair in a frizz and vacant eyes.
“You’ll be lucky if God saves you when you fall out of it. It’s all shit. God’s for nothing. But I fear hell just as much as you do. All we can do is try to believe and see if God listens.“
In her dress made for church, the stiff lace a cascade of black and white. A knee-length skirt and pilgrim collar. Church uniform. The telepathy Marcelle heard: “devout truths”, “deep breaths,” “if you need to console yourself, use these coping skills.”
All the things Marcelle picked up on by reading minds that she could never express piled up in her head and she was crazy.
“Marcelle may be crazy,” said a soft-voiced man about to make an assumption based on what he saw in elaborate artwork in a journal: a drawing in Bic pen, of a realistic-looking Nanny Cravat swallowing a spoonful of something, reminding him of milk poisoning and a scary story his mom sometimes read to him at night in his portentous childhood. Marcelle’s self-portrait was accurate. She overheard the bell ringing in the distance beyond her thoughts of his voice by the cathedral  bells that rang with worship, clanging vehemently. When Marcelle got home after spring choir ended, she planned the Drano death. It was under the kitchen sink, meant to mingle with Nanny Cravat’s cup of milk.
“Nanny, I  hope you enjoy your milk,”
“Come, have a sit-down,” said Nanny to Marcelle. She set the glass of milk  in front of Nanny Cravat, who was wearing her red velvet blouse and white cravat.
“Put that milk on the table carefully. Don’t spill it.”
Time to die, Marcelle wished. Down the throat went that blue liquid permeating Nanny Cravat’s esophagus as she choked. The only number Marcelle knew to call wasn’t an option, and she had to make her own way in the world feeling like humans weren’t worth anything and we’re all just partially alien. Meretricious, cheap people.
Marcelle wanted to die in outer space. She left the raw death and agony of Nanny Cravat slumped over on the table after she choked. Marcelle became the third eye, the third shrew, the ultimate survivor of destiny and doom.

Puzzles in Pop Culture: The Golden Girls
In today's blog post, we discuss a classic episode of The Golden Girls and solve a murder mystery weekend in our latest edition of Puzzles in Pop Culture!
In our Puzzles in Pop Culture series, we’ve featured shows as diverse as Gilmore Girls, NCIS: New Orleans, The West Wing, and Hell’s Kitchen. Strangely enough, we seem to find more puzzly content in sitcoms than any other TV genre. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, M*A*S*H, Parks and Recreation, and more have featured scavenger hunts, escape rooms, and other puzzly activities. And that’s true of today’s…

liv, i'm all out of period dramas! if you're inclined, i'd love to hear your favorites or more obscure suggestions in case i've missed some (and i'm sure i have--i recently realized the fabulous moll flanders w alex kingston exists and watched it for the first time!). ty ty
I have a few recommendations that come to mind (also, glad you enjoyed Moll Flanders bc I really love that adaptation)
• Mademoiselle Paradis (also called Licht in Germany/Austria) - This is a film about an 18th century composer/musician called Maria Theresia von Paradis. She was a contemporary of Mozart and was Austrian like him, and just as talented. She started to lose her sight at a young age and the film focuses on the period of her life where her parents had her treated by Franz Anton Mesmer (who actually managed to bring her sight back somewhat). I had lots of thoughts about this film, but I definitely think it is worth a watch, especially as there are literally zero films about disabled people from history, and I think it explores the way in which disabled people (especially disabled people like Maria, who was talented in the face of people who believed she could not be) were treated by those around them in the 18th century. It's in German but there are English subtitles!
• Vanity Fair (2004) - You might have seen this adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, starring Reese Witherspoon and Romola Garai amongst others, but if you haven't, you must. The director is an Indian woman and so, she really draws out Thackeray's exploration of Britain's colonisation of India (and the West Indies re: slavery) during the Regency era in this particular adaptation, and she drew it out in a way that I thought was super interesting. Also, I think Vanity Fair is such a good story, Becky Sharpe is such a polarising character and the film retains that aspect of the novel too. A really good period piece, imo, one that appears to tap into the political, gender, race etc. issues of Britain in the early 19th century.
• Lady J (also known as Mademoiselle de Joncquières in French) - This is a Netflix adaptation of a short story by the Enlightenment philosopher, Denis Diderot. At the beginning, it feels like a revenge drama set in pre-Revolutionary France, akin to something like Dangerous Liaisons. You support the main female protagonist in her early attempts to punish the libertine who broke her heart. However, she becomes increasingly more cruel, particularly when she draws a young working class sex worker and her mother into her schemes, and you start to question whether the punishment actually fits the crime, as it were. I think the film wants us to consider whether punishing the people who hurt us is ALWAYS a good thing, especially in this case where a privileged woman uses and abuses a poor teenage girl to do so. Really interesting film, made me think (and it is visually stunning too). It's in French with English subtitles!
• A United Kingdom - This film is set in the 1950s-60s and is about the relationship between Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana and a white English woman called Ruth Williams (who eventually married him). He meets Ruth whilst he is studying in the UK and their relationship immediately stirs up opposition, particularly within the British government: the government saw an interracial relationship between a black African man (one who had a prominent position, too) and a white English woman as increasingly threatening to their support of apartheid in South Africa AND their hold on the countries in Africa they still controlled at this point. It's a moment in history I knew nothing about before I saw this movie and I could not believe that a relationship between two people literally riled up a WHOLE GOVERNMENT (I was naive!!!)....it was directed by Amma Asante, who is responsible for 'Belle,' which you've undoubtedly seen!!!

“A genius . . . a writer who spent his lifetime decrying the onward march of the Machine.” — The New Yorker First published in 1936--and hailed as his best work--EYELESS IN GAZA is Aldous Huxley's loosely autobiographical novel of one man’s search for an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world. Anthony Beavis, a cynical libertine Oxford graduate, comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. His life, loves, and foreign adventures leave him unfulfilled, until. [...] EYELESS IN GAZA remains one of Huxley’s most enduring novels, a testament to the challenges and rewards of bold, vigorous thinking.
EXCERPTS / QUOTES / NOTES FROM MY READING:
[F]ashion is a topiary art. Those swan-life loins! That long slanting cascade of bosom - without any apparent relation to the naked body beneath! And all that hair, like an ornamental deformity of the skull! Oddly hideous and repellent it seemed in 1933. It was the same with these snapshots of Mary Amberley, taken ten years later. The skirt was long as ever, and within her narrower bell of drapery woman still glided footless, as though on castors. The breasts, it was true, had been pushed up a bit, the redundant posterior pulled in. But the general shape of the clothed body was still strangely improbable. A crab shelled in whalebone. And this huge plumed hat of 1911 was simply a French funeral of the first class. How could any man in his senses have been attracted by so profoundly anti-aphoridisiac an appearance? And yet, in spite of the snapshots, he could remember her the very embodiment of desirability. At the sight of that feathered crab on wheels his heart had beaten faster, his breathing had become oppressed.
...as Bubbles, in grass-green velveteen and ruffles...
...Anthony found himself reflecting impersonally, as he examined the top-hatted and tail-coated image of himself at Eton, a proof that progress can only be recorded, never experienced. He reached out for his note-bok, opened it and wrote: ‘Progress may, perhaps, be perceived by historians; it can never be felt by those actually involved in the supposed advance. The young are born into the advancing circumstances, the old take them for granted within a few months or years, advances aren’t felt as advances. There is no gratitude -- only irritation if, for any reason, the newly invented conveniences break down. Men don’t spend their time thanking God for cars; they only curse when the carburetor is choked.’       He closed the book and returned to the top-hat of 1907.
There was a sound of footsteps and, looking up, he saw Helen Ledwidge approaching with those long springing strides of hers... Under the wide hat her face was bright with the reflection from her flame-coloured beach pyjamas. As though she were in hell. And in fact, he went on to think, she was there. The mind is its own place; she carried her hell about with her. The hell of her grotesque marriage; other hells, too, perhaps. But he had always refrained from enquiring too closely into their nature, had always pretended not to notice when she herself offered to be his guide through their intricacies. Enquiry and exploration would land him in heaven-knew-what quagmire of emotion, what sense of responsibility. And he had no time, no energy for emotions and responsibilities. His work came first. Suppressing his curiosity, he went on stubbornly playing the part he had long since assigned himself - the part of the detached philosopher, of the preoccupied man of science who doesn’t seen the things that to everyone else are obvious. He acted as if he could detect in her face nothing but its external beauties of form and texture. Whereas, of course, flesh is never wholly opaque; the soul shows through the walls of its receptacle. Those clear grey eyes of hers, that mouth with its delicately lifted upper lip, were hard and almost ugly with a resentful sadness.
There was a convention between them that there should never be any fuss; not even the fuss of saying good-morning. No fuss at all.
... “Not working?” she asked in surprise. It was so rare to find him otherwise than immersed in books and papers.       He shook his head. "No sociology today.”      “What are you looking at?” Standing by his chair, she bent over the scattered snapshots.      “At my old corpses.” He handed her the ghost of the dead Etonian.       After studying it for a moment in silence, “You looked nice then.” she commented. ... “[Y]ou looked really sweet then. Touching.      “But I still am,” Anthony protested, smiling up at her.       She looked at him for a moment in silence.      Under the thick dark hair the forehead was beautifully smooth and serene, like the forehead of a meditative child. Childish too, in a more comical way, was the short short, slightly tilted nose. Between their narrowed lids the eyes were alive with inner laughter, and there was a smile also about the corners of the lips - a faint ironic smile that in some sort contradicted what the lips seemed in their form to express. They were full lips, finely cut; voluptuous and at the same time grave, sad, alwmost tremulously sensitive. Lips as though naked in their brooding sensuality; without defence of their own and abandoned to their helplessness by the small, unaggressive chin beneath.       “The worst of it is,” Helen said at last, “that you’r eright. You are sweet, you are touching. God knows why. Beautiful you oughtn’t to be. It’s all a swindle really, a trick for getting people to like you on false pretences.”       “Come!      “You make them give you something for nothing.”      “But at least I’m always perfectly frank about its being nothing. I never pretend it’s a Grand Passion.” He rolled the ri and opened the as grotesquely. “Not even a Wahlverwandschaft,” he added, dropping into German, so as to make all this romantic business of affinities and violent emotions sound particularly ridiculous. “Just a bit of fun.”       “Jus ta bit of fun,” helen echoed ironically, thinking, as she spoke, of that period at the beginning of the affair, when she had stood, so to speak on the threshold of being in love with him - on the threshold, waiting to be called in. But how firmly (for all his silence and studied gentleness), how definitely and decidedly he had shut the door against her! He didn’t want to be loved. For a moment she had been on the verge of rebellion; then, in that spirit of embittered and sarcastic resignation with which she had learned to face the world, she accepted his conditions. They were the more acceptable since there was no better alternative in sight; since, after all, he was a remarkable man and, after all, she was very fond of him; since, also he knew how to give her at least a physical satisfaction. “Just a bit of fun,” she repeated, and gave a little snort of laughter.       Anthony shot a glance at her, wondering uncomfortably whether she meant to break the tacitly accepted agreement between them and refer to some forbidden topic. But his fears were unjustified.       “Yes, I admit it,” she went on after a little silence. “You’re honest all right. But that doesn’t alter the fact that you’re always getting something for nothing. Call it an unintentional swindle. Your face is your fortune, I suppose. Handsome is as handsome doesn’t, in your case.”
“There ought to be some way of getting rid of one’s superfluous memories. How I hate old Proust! Really detest him.” And with a richly comic eloquence he proceeded to evoke the vision of that asthmatic seeker of lost time squatting, horribly white and flabby, with breasts almost female but fledged with long black hairs, for ever squatting in the tepid bath of his remembered past. And all the stale soapsuds of countless previous washings floated around im, all the accumulated dirty of yeras lay crusty on the sides of the tub or hung in dark suspension in the water. And there he sat, a pale repellent invalid, taking up spongefuls of his own thick soup and squeezing it over his face, scooping up cupfuls of it and appreciatively rolling the grey and gritty liquor round his mouth, gargling, rinsing his nostrils with it, like a pious Hindu in the Ganges...       “You talk about him,” said Helen, “as if he were a personal enemy.”
