Publishers’ Binding Thursday

This Publishers’ Binding Thursday I’m happy to share A New Book of the Fairies by British writer and suffragette Beatrice Harraden (1864-1936). Harraden was a founder of the Women’s Social and Political Union, and a leading member of the Women Writers’ Suffrage League. Published in 1897 by Griffith, Farran, Browne & Co. in London, the book features 44 illustrations by British designer Edith Lupton, who worked for Doulton & Co. (now Royal Doulton) designing ceramics from 1875-1890.

The cover features a lovely gold design on a dark blue book cloth. A child with a sunflower around its head collects flowers in their apron in a field while three cherubic fairies with flowers for hats play among the stems above. All of the edges of the pages are gilded.

4. a poetry book that reads like a story

I'll give you four book recs, because I can't decide which one I want to talk about.

The Ballad of the White Horse by G.K. Chesterton is an epic poem that tells an entire book's worth of story--war and glory and faith and sacrifice.

Borrowed Names: Poems About Laura Ingalls Wilder, C.J. Walker, Madame Curie and Their Daughters by Jeannine Atkins provides three different stories-in-verse about these historical figures.

The Seventh Raven by David Elliot retells "The Seven Ravens" in verse, with different poetic styles for each character's POV.

Sonnets from the Porteguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning reads like a narrative of the development of her romance with her husband.
