I stumbled upon this post of mine while going through this blog's archive and I remembered there's one thing on a similar note that I never shared so here it is.

The name Ivan is the Russian version of the name John, while Pavel is the Russian version of the name Paul.

There's two Christian saints that are always venerated together and are celebrated as one on the same day due to having lived and been martyred together in the fourth century, and those saints happen to be Saint John and Saint Paul. Which could of course mean nothing.

Father Zossima’s life’s doctrine being to treat servants as family, to be the servant to all men, BRINGING UP IN HIS DYING WORDS THE STORY OF JOSEPH BEING SOLD INTO SLAVERY BY HIS OWN BROTHERS, treating children with love and kindness in order to break the cycle of abuse and spending his life secretly praying for the suicides even though it is a sin to do so. Both Smerdyakov and Zossima, complete opposites to one another, being rejected by polite society offhand and dismissed entirely based on the fallacy of wisdom of repugnance and the stench of moral decay.
