oh ho ho i have looked up the massachusetts ballot questions and i am so personally excited to vote against the MCAS, the high school standardized test students must pass to graduate. it never impacted my own education because i was in the very last class not to have to take it (late 90s), but i was selected for the pool of beta testers the year before it was universally implemented.

i had a great time actually—get out of class for two days for a test that doesn’t even matter? i enjoyed the process of taking standardized tests (when they didn’t matter) because i had spent most of my pre-high-school days in a homeschool environment without grades, so they reminded of the trivia workbook pages that were rationed out and treated as rewards (in a one room schoolhouse with 5 kids, you take the thrills you could get—public school education was pretty amazing after that).

the most memorable part of it for me was that we got little boxes of raisins as a snack and mine had an inchworm in it. but even then as a dumbass teenager i remember giving feedback that this would be demoralizing and unfair if imposed on everyone. schools chose who would put in the test group, and every one was an A student! what kind of sample was that?

the MCAS wouldn’t become a compulsory requirement for graduation until no child left behind, but it still immediately changed things. my sister was one year behind me, and her experience in the same classes i had taken the year before was so much less inspiring. history and civics teachers who had been painstakingly gathering copies of real articles for decades about historical events had to teach from state approved textbooks. the cross-disciplinary fun projects for multiple subjects were cancelled. older teachers started phoning it in and planned their retirement.

anyway, one of the things i have always felt most grateful for in my life is that i squeaked through my public education before state testing choked it. it was a small rural public school (pretty well funded though, there are a lot of fancy summer homes in property taxing distance), and had very passionate teachers who were having extra creative fun squeezing out the last of their independence, knowing that testing was coming. i was one of the canaries in the coal mine and i will take great pleasure if my vote helps shut it down.

One of the strongest points of Mass Effect, if not the strongest, is just how well written the characters are. From Shepard, to the squad, to the side characters like Anderson and Bakara, to barely-there NPCs like Ereba and Charr the lovers, Etarn Tiro the enthusiastic turian merchant, Kargesh the krogan who wanted a fish, Lia'Vael, the quarian who gets falsely accused of theft, and the Salarian who wants to buy a memento to his asari lover to remember him by once he's dead.

I feel like so many of them are memorable, and they all serve a purpose to the overall world building. The krogan show that they are not the violent thugs the galaxy has made them out to be. The salarian shows the struggle born out of building relationships with people of a species with a life expectancy so beyond your own. Lia'Vael illustrates what Tali says about the quarians being treated like second class citizens. Those small little side quests have a meaning and a purpose, it doesnt feel like they are Just There, and they add more to the lore of them game to those who care about that stuff.

i know it’s been a year since my last hc post, but here are my Floyd hcs lol.

he was a notorious baby hog; very excited to be an older brother. He also spent hours dressing up and doing his makeup, but he doesn’t care much about that anymore.

I think he made some bad decisions, and had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way. During that time he had many on and off gray episodes, leading to his downturned ears and darker complexion.

Xavier is an extremely jealous person, as you’ve seen countless times- especially when Lumiere is brought up. Wanting you to praise nobody but himself- not even your other coworkers or actors on TV. Wanting your eyes and heart to see him and him alone

Swooping to your side every time some potentially strange man approaches you, even if they were just trying to get directions. It warms your heart every single time. You always feel safe with him around, knowing your very own prince charming is there for you at all times

He will never admit why he particularly dislikes any positivity for Lumiere- sure it’s actually him under the mask, but at the same time they're nothing alike. Lumiere is up on a pedestal being the perfect hero. How can he possibly hold a candle to that? Especially when the him of today is the only version of him that you know

You love seeing the fun expressions he makes and swoon every time you see the affection in his eyes, and he loves to hear you say sweet nothings to him with the goofiest smile on your face. There's no way either of could second guess your feelings for one another, but that won’t stop the jealousy from him or the lighthearted teasing from you

He yearns for the day you can remember the him of yesteryear- from when you first got tangled up in fate and he lost you for the first time. Every time you call his name his heart sings just like back then, and he will hold on to every bit of that time he possibly can even if neither of you are the same person anymore
