I see a lot of love everywhere for the Muppet version of A Christmas Carol. Lots.

I didn’t see that version until a long time after it came out, maybe 2006? Something like that. I was out of university. So I don’t really have a nostalgic fondness for it.

I grew up watching the Alistair Sim version from 1959, my mom loved the classics. But we have seen every version out there. Name it and I have probably seen it at least once.

But then… the best version came around as a made-for-tv special, starring Patrick Stewart as Scrooge. This one came out in 1999 (i must have been in grade 8), and it is so good. He plays a great Scrooge, with Richard E Grant as Bob Cratchit, who is also marvelous. We made an effort to watch this one at least once a year.

So while I respect the Muppets, my favourite adaptation is with Patrick Stewart.

While I’m at it, this is my absolute fave Christmas movie ever. I love Cary grant movies, and this is him at his charmingest.

Movies I’ve Watched - 2024

122/?: The Bishop’s Wife (1947) - watched 4/29/24

This movie is pretty sentimental, but effectively so. It could not work with anyone but Cary Grant in the lead — his easy charm makes it believable that everyone is enchanted by him instead of finding him creepy (and Dudley could very easily go creepy). James Gleason is also a fun time, as always. The movie could do a better job of making Dudley’s intentions clear, but overall I appreciated that it was “religious” without being preachy or even too specifically Christian.
