If there’s one amazing thing about all YinWar series is that their pre-relationship stage will never even hover around the “I can’t like a boy” trope.

Maybe there’ll be some contemplation. But that contemplation will always be all about “holy shit I’m feeling things I wanna kiss him so bad” and none about “what the fuck what am I even feeling he is a boy”

and it’ll always be short lived, before they go all out and straight for the flirting/dancing around each other stage.

and we all know what happens after that.

But you know what else?

In every single universe, no matter what, they are both undeniably crazy about each other. Yin’s character is simply always gone for his partner. (Not talking about the actors!!!!)

There’s no question that Vee is head over heels for Mark, that Dew is absolutely smitten with Best, and that Jack is crazy about Joke.

There’s no confusion stage. There’s no questioning stage. And if there is, it’s practically non-existent.

There’s not a point at their series in which you wonder if they like each other or not, it’s always a given, from the moment their eyes meet.

And it never gets old. NEVER.

Valentine's Day heart stickers and school graduation shirt-signing in Thai series

Tomorrow is Friday 14th February, which is the date where the real-life inspiration of these two tropes come to perfectly coincide. Watchers of Thai series will probably have seen them played out, but non-Thai viewers might not realize this is actually two separate real-life traditions in Thai schools.

The heart stickers thing is pretty self-explanatory. Students will give heart stickers and put them on others' shirts on Valentine's Day. It's mainly just for fun, but can also serve as a popularity contest of sorts. Series will lean on this and show popular kids with shirts all covered in hearts, while someone with no hearts at all would be a complete nobody (or a stickler for discipline who refuses to engage in such nonsense, as with Akk in The Eclipse).

The shirt signing, on the other hand, is a tradition associated with the last day of school for graduating students. People will sign just about anything, from silly quotes to sentimental goodbyes. IRL some people will bring a different shirt from the one they're wearing, cause that ink is gonna run off if you put it in the wash, and you won't want a memento that stinks. But series never show this, because there's something special about writing your deepest feelings down against that special person's back, without them immediately discovering what you just said.

What's interesting is that in Thailand, the school year ends in February, so making space for exams afterwards, there's a good chance the last day of school will fall on Valentine's Day. (Well, it's actually 1 in 7 if you have the right week, but you'd also celebrate in advance if the 14th falls on the coming weekend).

And creators love these visuals, either separately or combined for greater effect. For series revolving around high school life, shirt-signing days are especially powerful in evoking the poignancy of saying goodbye, going all the way back to Hormones. The scenes here in My School President, The Best Story, and Nha Harn all play strongly on this. For others, it's used to illustrate the passage of time. And for those who aren't graduating, there's always the sticker-giving opportunity.

"By about four-thirty a.m. Mike (Hawthorn) and I had negotiated the stairs and had finally reached our landing. We were debating whether to tip Peter Collins out of bed or not when Sculati, our team manager, came along carrying a suitcase: he was on his way to the airport to fly home to Italy. As he went by he splashed us with some water out of the fire bucket. This gesture gave Mike a foul idea; he picked up the bucket, emptied it over my head, and then ran to his room laughing in a rather idiotic way. I stood quite still for a moment or two while the water formed a pool on the carpet beneath me. Then I saw that just above where the bucket had hung was a fire hose, and a little further down the corridor a large wheel, the turning of which would send water rushing through the hose. I felt positively evil. Carefully I connected the hose to the main. Then I unrolled it down the corridor as far as the door of Mike's room. I noticed with satisfaction that the door was not quite shut. He was still laughing. I nipped back to the wheel and turned it. My surprise at what happened next was only exceeded by Mike's. The hose became alive, and snaked off down the corridor like a great cobra. The nozzle banged on the door as if demanding entry and then thrust everything aside and shot into Mike's room. He was about to put on his pyjama legs and had paused for a moment when he heard the knock on his door. The next moment his pyjama legs were up against the wall and he was flat on his back, bowled over by the jet of water that had suddenly entered his room. The hose went quite mad as the pressure built up and the nozzle whizzed round the room like an enraged hornet. It shot the pictures off the wall, the blankets off the bed, and managed to give Mike a couple of fourpenny ones as well. He scrambled out of the room and ran out nude down the corridor to the wheel and, using all his strength, he was a big fellow, jammed it full on. By now everything was out of hand: water was running from his room both up and down the corridor, and angry voices were demanding what was going on. 'We must put the nozzle out of a window, I said. He nodded and, our feud forgotten for the moment, we raced back to his bedroom. He managed to get hold of the nozzle but could not control it and found himself in the corridor with water shooting everywhere.

I could see that he would not be able to get back into his room so I tried the door of another bedroom hoping the window would be open. Unfortunately the maiden lady who was in occupation had not expected to be awakened by a nude man carrying a firehose, and she screamed so much Mike had to come out. I opened another door which turned out to be the bedroom of a friend of ours. As it happened he was not alone; neither were he and his friend sleeping. They were quite unprepared for the onslaught that followed. Mike charged in, desperately trying to control the nozzle. A jet of water whipped the bedclothes off the bed and deposited its occupants on the floor. Mike pressed on and finally dropped the nozzle out of the window. He then picked up a sheet, wrapped it round his body, and, looking rather like a Roman senator, walked majestically back to his room." - p241/2
