i have a TON of domestic burs headcanons to share omg 🙏🙏 they live in my head rent free
- whenever soot wakes up throughout the night and isnt able to get back to sleep, sometimes he'll get up and make breakfast and coffee as a nice surprise for his general
- general started keeping a sketchbook and will occasionally sketch soot whenever the other isnt paying attention. theres drawings of him cooking, singing, relaxing-- soot eventually found the sketchbook and thought it was the sweetest thing in the world. he'll occasionally take it and add his own drawings of the general for wil to find later
- general found a stray cat outside their cottage and started feeding it and got WAY too attached and ended up begging soot for them to keep it as a pet. he said yes (of course) bc he saw how happy it made the general and because he's always wanted a cat but never had the time to keep one
- this one is a little self indulgent but i like to think that the burs have a guest room in the governor's mansion OR some sort of penthouse in the capital whenever they want to visit the city + tommy for longer than a day. everyone loves them of course and it can be a little overwhelming at times, but it's nice to visit everyone
- whenever they do visit the capital, soot likes to take general around and show him all the best shops and restaurants and cafes-- (soot thinks that his general has never seen lmanburg post-independence, general is technically experiencing the beauty of lmanburg for the first time) and they just have so much fun together
sorry this was so long but i hope u enjoy!!! <3 i love ur works more than anything, atol is probably my all time favorite fic and one of the best fics ive ever read :) so happy that they all got a happy ending
You don't need to apologize! I like your head anons very much and they are so sweet!! Made me go 'aww', and it also pretty much fits with the Burs they are very sweet with each other.
And I really like the cat one!(Cause I love cats and I find the idea of them having a cat very cute)
I'm glad to hear you enjoy my works so much!! It means a lot to me. And I'm glad you liked the ending of their story(I hope you'll like the epilogue too ^^)
Thank you for sharing your headcanons with me ^_^

Hi, i’m from liverpool and saying governor is seriously taboo LOL Idek if people know this, but with the cultural widespread of the Beatles- pete best (a member of the beatles who left shortly before Beatlemania) is a bit of a sad topic, especially the closer you get to the city centre.
This is why his phrase “Up the Govvy” (as featured in one of his first dolo drumming tracks) is used as a way to commemorate him, and casual usage is really looked down on especially
The people of Liverpool(including myself as a big beetles fan) really wish that pete best had another opportunity, but the forgotten beatle ended up an afterthough in the worlds mind. Its soul crushing even now to see love me do trend, when he isnt even mentioned!!!! I donmt know Peter, yes, but as a Liverpool resident he is truly a part of my heritage.
I hope this spreads awareness, Up the Govvy everyone, and up Pete

TFP WEREWOLF AU!!
It focuses mainly on humans because Yeah,,theyre very dear to me :-))
I made the orginal designs back at the beginning of 2021 but i thought i should remake them
HOW DO WEREWOLVES WORK IN THIS AU?
werewolves turn into their wolf forms during full Moon,however if they practice enough they can do it on Will (except for during full moon).
Werewolves have a society like dynamic, they have special doctors in medical facilities and a bunch of governors people knows about them. They’re like,, if you do the bare minimum to hide you won’t be found.
The alpha/beta/omega dynamics don’t really exist (because they don’t exist anywhere,even for real wolves lol) but werewolves from one territory create packs so they can function better.
For werewolves it’s illegal to turn other normal people into werewolves.
I have much more useless info about them which I’ll probably write about someday…
WHO IS AND WHO ISNT A WEREWOLF IN THIS AU
As I have mentioned before,this au focuses on tfp humans. To be more specific; adults in tfp.
In this au June,Fowler and Silas are werewolves.
Jack isn’t a werewolf because jun was turned into one after he was born. Fowler was born as a werewolf and Silas forced some poor guy to turn him into one. Also,Sierra is a werewolf.
WEREWOLF DESIGNS
June!
In her werewolf form,June is 2x bigger than as a human. She’s a nurse assigned to working with werewolves and she assists anyone who has problems with transforming/got hurt during full moon. She’s a kind of a healer
Her skin is more greyish than when she’s a human because it’s stronger and kinda less visible during the night. (Also it’s just a design choice lmao)
She’s got a bite mark on her forearm from when she was bitten. She got turned into a werewolf when she was assisting a patient in the ER
She’s a rather strong werewolf and is pretty muscular in here werewolf form despite it being much bigger than her normal body .
FOWLER!!
He’s also much bigger than in his human form. His skin is also more greyish than his normal one.
And he’s got longer hair because he’s my favouri character and all my blorbos get long hair privileges ™️
He’s very strong and he’s the best at fighting from the three of humans in this au,because unlike them,he was born as a werewolf. He’s got no problem with transformations and it’s not as painful for him. Since his body has always been used to such changes, he’s the most “healthy looking” from the three (I mean,,he doesn’t have pointy bones,his skin doesn’t rip apart and his bones don’t break that bad)
SILAS!!!
Silas forced some poor guy to make him into a werewolf to be stronger etc. BUT his plan didn’t work- the guy really didn’t want to do that and it wasn’t done at the right time.
Silas is the smallest of the three. His transformations are long and painful and he can’t control them at all. Since his “becoming a werewolf “ didn’t quite work out,his body isn’t prepared for the overall changes; his bones grow and reshape but that could not be said about the muscles and body fat. He looks rather unhealthy. His skin stays the same as his human one and it often tears and is more likely to be bruised etc.
He also has the most human like proportions

Also! Firstly I just wanted to say that i really like your writing and slow pace in the Empress series! Its really poggers. Secondly if you're taking request: could you maybe write something where Phil helps Techno ask out (y/n)? I just think that Phil would be such a great wingman (pun maybe intended lmao). I really like the way you write your Empress series' setting and characters so maybe you could do some sort of royal au similar to it? Not cannon to the series of course. If not then the dsmp still works :D (sorry if i sent the ask twice! My internet's shit lol) ~🌻
Awh! Your all good!!🖤 and thank you!! one Prince Techno comin up! (Im so sorry i got this out late, and that its poor, I was stumped hard on this for what to put!
My darling- Technoblade
Warnings: none
Techno was a pretty well known and loved Prince. He was elegant, kind, gentle, sarcastic, funny, talented. He was just perfect. To Techno you were perfect. You were one of the servants sure, but he didn't mind that. You had the most gentle outset he had ever seen on someone. You could just walk into a room and somehow everyone was in love with you.
Techno had feelings for you for a awfully long time however, no matter what he did he couldn't push himself to tell you. Far to afraid of what you would say to him in response. He rather sit suffering in silence as your friend, than risk loosing you completely.
You felt the same way. Techno was always so gentle with you. always asking if you were comfortable, if you felt safe, he would even make sure that you wouldn't be over worked. You couldn't count the nights that he read you to sleep in the library. Everyone found you two utterly adorable with your hesitance towards each other, they couldn't wait for the day one of you slipped up and confessed.
Phil on the other hand? Oh, oh he found this scenario hilarious. See Phil was often the one that helped get you two alone together. Ranging from distracting advisors, governors, consorts, you name it and Phil probably has diverted them at least once. Phil would go as far to joke that he was the one that had set you and Techno up originally.
Although Phil found this whole situation hilarious, he did feel bad for his friend. Techno was a hard worker, he often put a lot of time into his country and his people. but, sadly techno would rarely take care of himself. Now Phil wasn't setting you up with techno so you would become his care taker. Rather he knew with you around, Techno would be more conscious of himself as to not worry you. like always, Phil was right too.
It was a off day. Techno had himself rested in one of the lounge chairs that resided in the library. Lately his feelings had become painful to hold back. Even the voices started banding together, telling him he had to confess.
Phil had to return some books so when he walked into the library and saw techno, he wouldn't have said he was suprised. "What's on your mind now?" Phil mused. Placing the books back on there specific shelf. He earned a sigh and groan from Techno. "Its (y/n) isnt it" he mused. "Mate you should just tell her. Get it over with. You know she'll like you back"
"Phil I.. I can't- she's- shes just so perfect" Techno's heart melted at the thought of you. He rested the crook of his elbow over his eyes. "I.. i dont even know how or where to ask her.." Techno started sounded almost defeated. Phil couldn't bare to watch his friend mope about anymore. He knew somthing had to be done.
Phil didn't waist time on his new plan. He was determined to see you together by the end of the night. He found you outside hanging the laundry. When you saw Phil you smiled brightly.
"Hello Philza" you said, folding a sheet in your arms. Phil leaned on the post well he watched you. Amusement lacing his lips.
"Hello, (y/n) i was talking to Techno the other day. He mentioned you quite alot" you felt your cheeks heat up as you looked to him. Hearing that he talked about you made your heart beat faster.
"H-he was? W..what did he say?" You asked, now fully invested in him more than your work.
"Oh he was just rambling off, you know how he can be. However, he uh, did mention that you were quite beautiful. Smart, funny. You know all that fun stuff" he said casually. If your heart could have did a leap it would have. The idea of Techno call you beautiful was beyond you.
You moved closer to Phil, "w..was that all he said?.." you hoped there was more than he was telling you.
Phil pondered a moment and smiled. "Well he was curious if you would meet him at the stables for a date. You know, let him take you for a ride in the country side" you were speechless, but filled with utter excitement at the idea of a date with him. "Want me to tell him you'll be there?" You nodded fast.
"Please, ill take off early to meet him there even" you said with the widest smile. This warmed Phil's heart to see how in love you were with his best friend.
"Alright' ill tell him you'll be there" Phil said smiling. His plan falling into motion. Now he had to corral the stubborn bull named Technoblade.
"You should take (y/n) for a horseback ride" Phil said upon entering his friends office. Techno's brow furrowed, causing him to look up from his papers.
"Take her for a... why?" Techno said mid confusion. Phil shrugged casually.
"Well I was just talking to (y/n) and you know she had off-hand mentioned it that she really liked fhe horse rides with you." At this statement techno blinked a bit. He pressed his lips and thought breifly.
"Well i uh.. I mean if she wants to, i'll glady take her". Techno said. Moving his few papers asside. Looking at Phil. "When does she want to leave?"
Phil hummed and looked at the clock. Mentally assuming your work schedule. "What about four-ish? Get there early for her?
Techno nodded. "Dosnt she work until five?" Techno knew your schedule mostly because he was the one that would meet you after it for casual walks.
"Normally. But she said she would take it off early to go with you" Phil wanted to keep semi to the truth. But he knew as soon as you two were alone talking, it would be over. The two of you would quickly discover that Phil was behind this.
When you waked up to the stables you smiled happily. Waiting with a horse in hand was Techno. He gave you a kind smile. Happy to see you in such a joyful mood.
"Ready to go?" He asked gently. You nodded fast, excited to spend the evening with him. He offered his hand to you. When you took it he gently pulled you close. Lifting you up onto his horse. After you were situated on the sattle he climbed on behind you. Wrapping his arm around your waist securely, wanting to assure you wouldn't fall off eather way.
You relaxed into him like you always did. Content with his company. With the nudge of his heel's you both were off on your way.
Well you two toured the country side casually. You decided to thank him for the date. Seeing as you felt it was the beginning of somthing great. "Thank you for taking me on this date Techno... It really means alot to me..." you herd techno give a 'heh?'.
"Princess I adore your company. But what on earth are you talking about?" This was your turn to be confused. You looked up at him to see if he was joking.
"Phil said you wanted to take me on a date..." your eyes grew saddened. "W...was this a lie?..." Techno's heart weighed heavier at the sight of your sad eyes.
Techno felt like he hit a wall. Does he explain he wants to take you for a date more than anything? Or keep quiet. After seeing your eyes, he knew he couldn't break your heart more.
"I... I do want to take you for a date... I've wanted a date with you more than you realize... However, I didnt ask you... Im assuming Phil actually set us up..." he said, looking away a light red. You gave a soft gentle smile.
"Hey..." you tilted his head to look down at you. "Even if he set us up... I'm glad he did" Techno looked down into your eyes. His going gentle.
"You are?..." you nodded gently. Giving a gentle kiss to his cheek.
"I got a date out of it with you"

Hey! Would it be okay if you wrote yandere headcanons for Jafar, Captain Hook, Ratcliffe, and Maleficent? Thank you!
No problem! ^^ Sorry for the wait! Ratcliffe posed a challenge, but I'm so happy to get a request about him and his and Mal's turned out my favourites- I hope you like them too!
~~~
Captain Hook:
Hook has no problema’s with kidnapping people in the first place; He’s done it twice (More?? I remember twice off the top of my head) already, and you being in the real world would be absolutely no issue because he’s done that before too (Jane). So, he’s definitely going to take you when he’s yandere for you.
He’s not violent with you, but he is cruel. Ties you up and keeps you in the belly of the ship, with all the supplies and stuff. Not even his crew are allowed to sleep down there, safe from the elements. Just you. Occasionally someone other than your kidnapper comes down to get food / other supplies or to bring you food (Its always Smee, as he is the one Hook trusts the most) and you ‘enjoy’ your only human contact with someone apart from Hook, someone other then the one person you’re exposed to every single day, who you hate.
He also likes to keep you gagged though sometimes if he remembers, so their will likely be no talking between you and Smee.
And don’t doubt Hook’s strength against you. I don’t know how, you don’t know how, no one knows how, but Captain Hook is freakishly strong. I’ll let your mind run wild with that knowledge, of Hook’s physical strength…
And don’t start thinking you get a break where the heroes of this movie are involved! As soon as Peter finds out about you, you’re in for even more pain. He see’s that you’re important to Hook, so of course he’s going to target you a lot. Really, this is just not a nice situation to be in. You get no rest.
Hook is also devious and cunning, so he’s very kind and lovely to you (Apart from kidnapping, tying you up, gagging and keeping you hostage from sunlight and freedom of course). Treats you so well. Gives you pet names, comforts you when you’re despairing, gives you the best of the food they have, etc. This is all in order to make you love him, so if you ever get the chance to escape, you’ll be fucked up in the mind and heart and you won’t know what to do; Leave, or stay?
Governor Ratcliffe:
Ratcliffe is a cruel, selfish man but… he doesn’t really do anything on his own? He persuades and manipulates people with his words (And SONG!), but he doesn’t even dig for his own gold, my man. So, this may be a slow burn kind of deal.
If you’re one of the natives in a land he’s ‘exploring’, he will most definitely take you back to England and integrate you into European society- whether you like it or not (Most likely not). It’s like what John Rolfe tried to do with Pocahontas, except she was willing. It was her idea to go. You, did not get a choice.
If you’re an British person living in England (Whether you’re a courtier, noble, middle class or servant), then he doesn’t keep you hostage because he’s always out on exhibitions and he doesn’t want his precious to die in his home from starvation while he’s away. Its not like he can ask a neighbour to come by and feed his prisoner every day!
But he does make it clear to you that while he’s gone, if you so much as look at another man then he will find out, and they will disappear the next day. You assume he has spies, but really he just wants you to think that. But he’s so scary and straight faced and stern, that you believe him 100 percent. You unconditionally believe that this powerful (Much more powerful then you), influential, intimidating man who clearly has an unhealthy obsession with you, has spies watching you the whole time he’s away.
Its worse though when he is home in England, and he is the one watching you. His gaze feels like gristle and you’re afraid and get a sick taste in your mouth every time you’re alone because he will follow you and you’re afraid he’ll come.
He manipulates people into thinking you two are a couple.
In other words: He operates in plain sight. He is showing his feelings for you and possessiveness over you in plain sight… so it’d be very, very hard for you to escape.
Jafar:
Never. Stops. Cornering you alone. It’s like he has some kind of ‘Y/N senses’ that alert him when you’re alone in the palace and he’ll come a running.
It’s very creepy and very dangerous, with him. And, I don’t want to say you should carry around a weapon… but… have a get-away strategy, at least. Our man’s a creeper. I mean, usually not quite as bad as Frollo, but that’s just because he has other priorities like power and revenge in the movies, but as he is yandere here… you are his number 1 priority.
Jafar is different o other Yanderes in that he genuinly enjoys scaring you. This isnt all just an elaborate scheme to have you for himself and all that, no. Although that is part of it. He also just loooooves messing with you in this way.
For a while you’re pretty safe, because he gets such a kick out of turning up around you and creeping you out a bit with off compliments that are a little bit too vulgar for public and a decibel too loud and lightly touching you so spiders creep up your spine. Not in any inappropriate spots, not that that matters when you don’t want to be touched, but it’s not like he’s trying to cop a feel, you know? He just likes seeing you flustered and making sure you know that he could do whatever he liked, whenever he wants.
Eventually he’ll get bored of that though, because the more you talk to him or look at him, or respond at all to his presence, the more he wants you. To be around you, as often as possible.
And, more importantly, alone. He doesn’t like other people getting to be around you. That’s a gift for him, alone. He wants to be in a relationship with you in every sense of the word, but he wants it so you have a relationship with no one but him.
So, yeah… A sprinkle of kidnapping...
He will always like to see you a little scared of him every now and then. Throughout this whole ordeal, man, you will be on your toes.
Maleficent:
She starts out pretty nicely, actually! Just, after you meet, she starts visiting you every week and having lunches or teas with you and chatting! It’s nice! She’s smart, and clever, and surprisingly funny in that devious dark way that that makes you wonder how serious she actually is.
And as it turns out, surprising both of you actually (You more than her obviously, because she is the Mistress of All Evil. She’s just like ‘Oh’, and you’re like ‘Oh fuck’), she’s deadly serious.
Because one day, she’s leaving your forest cottage al happy with that nice, warm, gooey, lovely feeling in her chest and tiny foreign smile on her face and she looks back one last time as you close the door and get back to the rest of your life, and suddenly feels a horrible tightness in her chest. Begging her to go back to you and stay there. Like when you watch your parent drive off after leaving you at school and you have the sudden urge to call them back because now you’re stuck in this awful place.
Because, now everywhere is an awful place when you aren’t with her.
And this will not do.
Her very next visit is when things get turbulent, because she isn’t a procrastinator.
You have your tea and your bickies and your chat, and its wonderful- because like hell Mal’s gonna miss out on her chat with you! No, the stealing you can wait until after. But then, when it is over, she reveals her true intentions and your lovely friendship is destroyed. Now she is the evil villain who kidnapped you and won’t let you leave her scary castle.
She’s happy, though. And that’s what matters to her.
Heads up long slightly incoherant post about the walking dead lol so prepare to scroll if ya dont feel like reading
yknow, merle is prob one kf the best written characters/antagonists ive ever seen, like hes a racist disgusting horrible piece of shit, but fuck if he aint a character with layers, like when you first meet him in season 1 hes a flat character whos there to cause conflict by ykno being racist and skeevy, not a monster by any means but still not anyone ud wanna hang around with. the last time you see him, handcuffed on the roof, we see this brief moment of desperation begging for life before he turns on a dime cursing god and saying how hes never begged before before he saws off his own hand, and like you go from really disliking him to feeling bad for him and tbat i feel is the definition about how the viewers gonna feel about merle throught his time in the show.
we see him go back to more dislike for him as we learn more about merle through daryl and his relationship with merle. at tbe very least darlys perception when hes halucinating is a sort of backhanded encouragement and bullying that feels more cruel than a typical playful meanness syblings can have, so the viewer goes back to feeling more negativety towards merle than anything else.
Then you see him again in season 3. and he does drastically worse things than weve seen him do before all for the governor and that is the crux of his character development, which is rather plainly laid out for us by michonne right before merle tries to kill the governor. Throught out the season you see that loyalty, especially to your family, is a big thing for merle, something he shares with daryl, through his wanting to find daryl as soon as he finds out hes alive and then choosing to try to escape with his brother rather than kill him to stay alive like a character similar to merle mightve. but i feel loyalty to merle also is shown by how much hes willing to do for the governor after having been saved by him, hes willing to wait to find his brother when the governor says to, though of course this isnt without the beginnings of degredation of merles loyalty to the governor i feel.
you also see how merle views himself as a bad guy, a loner, and almost a tool i would say as well, at least part of it could have come from his upbringing and culture incomparison to others, but i feel a whole lot of it probably come from his feelings on what hes done for the governor, every human hes ever killed has been for the governor, so he forces himself to be the outsider, and you feel bad for him, you dont like him but you feel for him, hes take michonne becuase hes the shitty guy who does the dirty work for whoever hes loyal to, first its the governor and this time its for his brother, but as soon as hes faced with what hes doing and talked down by michonne he goes off to fucking kill the governor the fucking balls, and hes damn clever about it too, and finally right as hes about to die for the second time we see, it comes down to him not begging for his life, thats not what hes about and its even sadder becuase he just stands there, he knows hes been beat and you. feel. bad. its hurts. even tho uve never liked him hes been the bad guy hes brought glenn and maggie to the governor he tried to kill michonne he killed that kid. hes objecticely a shitty guy but you feel bad for him and his actions lead to the downfall of the governor, he did a good thing, and it doesnt erase his action the show doesn try to do that, hes not treated as "the rough guy with a heart of gold" becuase the show knows hes not that, hes selfish and only truly loyal to his brother.
his chadacter arc isnt unique, "shitty guy antagonist joins the protag team and self sacrifices to help defeat the bbeg" has been done before quite a few times in other medias ive seen, but merles treated alot more different than others. it feels like most times this character type is always "redeemed" for what they did, but merle really isnt. and i apprecitae that. i appreciate merles whole character and how it both cements him as a character you dislike maybe even hate, but also a character you feel bad for and almost admire some of his priciples if you stretch, but you arent forced to accept him as a good guy becuase he did one good thing. i dunno, ive just had sum thots about merle
#iwillspeakincessantly#when i first watched this show i celebrated when he died lol and only felt bad when darry was sad lol#but rewatching it now i feel way diff lol#prob me havign more developed crital thinking lol#anyways id say im sorry for the long post but im kinda not#this is my house lol but also kidna sorry lol
this is for when you wake up tomorrow, but can you please talk about galos superb emotional awareness?? he's got some serious emotional skills!
yeah of course!! i think its important to mention first and foremost that promare is built around compassion and willingness to listen and understand people you think are different from you just bc you dont have the exact same experiences. but in the words of nexus, we’re not so different. galo represents that! him and lio are literally the bridge of understanding and empathy. and because of this, both their characters hinge on love! love for other people and love for the earth. that’s why people misinterpreting characters like lio to be mean is so upsetting, because its missing the point of the movie. but anyway we’re talking about galo and his epic emotional intelligence so lets DO THAT.
so we gotta start with the obligatory “people think galos an idiot BUT ACTUALLY-” because its true! he may be oblivious about some things but he has an ability to look at a situation and know what to say and do to fix it; he’s passionate and has a solid belief in himself so whether or not he’s wording something perfectly people FEEL that hes being genuine. when you’re unapologetically yourself, people respond to that!
more than any other character it was galo that was the one who knew that lio needed help and was the only one who knew how to help him. and galo proves this isnt lio-exclusive (tho it definitely shows a lot with lio, and that’s for a reason lol). he knows what to say to reassure aina at the lake, he knows what to say to get heris to question her decision with helping kray, he knows what to do to get his teammates on his side to help, he saves lio and inspires him to save the earth. you could write an entire essay on any scene he surprises people and gets them thinking, he does this so much! i dont think this is something he’s totally aware of and uses to his advantage as much as its just people responding to how earnest he is about wanting to help others.
the scene with lio as a dragon is brought up a lot when talking abt galo because its through his pov that the movie tells us that galo noticed lio was crying. we, the viewer, know what happened at the burnish camp. we saw lio lose his people and his best friends to freeze force, we know why he feels he’s lost everything. WE know why it isnt just rage, but its grief and pain as well thats fueling him, but galo doesnt know that. he sees the dragon, he knows its lio, and he notices right away that hes crying. he met lio a couple times and he’s kept in mind what lio’s said about burnish not killing- so he knows something is very wrong. something must have spurred lio to react like this. something must be hurting him. so now he knows that lio’s hurting and he has to do something to help, both for lio and to stop the fire in the city. no one else noticed or cared that lio was in pain. but galo’s whole thing is figuring out what people need and saving them! so of course he noticed.
galo and lio save each other, MULTIPLE times. its through their differences they find strength! galo and lio are both passionate, emotional people, though they show that in different ways. its really lucky that galo and lio found each other; they work so well together, well enough to save the world! they’re both written with each other in mind, to draw out the best in each other and do together what they can’t do alone. they find strength through each other. that’s really important.
to get back on track cuz i kinda went off on a side note there, i think it’s important to mention that galo being emotionally perceptive goes both ways. he notices whats going on with other people and notices how they feel and what he can do to help, but that also means he notices how people feel about him. people tend to assume galo just doesn’t notice when people get frustrated with him or when they’re rude to him, but i dont think thats true. its not that he doesnt notice, its that he’s used to it. he chooses to let a lot go. but when he snaps at lio for calling the matoi stupid, its from a buildup from ppl, whether jokingly or not, calling him or his interests stupid. u cant talk abt how galo perceives how ppl feel and acts accordingly without acknowledging that that also means he is aware of how ppl feel about HIM. another reason why him and lio work well together, with lio listening to him and taking what he says seriously, just like galo does for him.
anyway, the movie itself is all such a good example of galo showing rly good emotional awareness, and part of that also comes from him being open to trying to do better when he messes up. he apologizes when he does something wrong, he LISTENS, and he CARES about making things right. he cares about how lio feels and he cares about how the burnish feel. he cares a lot about making sure people are safe and happy, that they know he’s listening and is trying to help.
there’s a small line that i’ve always appreciated when galo is explaining the spaceship to lio. he says that the ship is human powered first, only adding that its the burnish specifically powering it afterward. this is an important line because its galo showing lio that he listened to lio earlier when he said the burnish were human beings just as much as galo. that small word choice means a lot, bringing the interaction in the cave back- galo said something insensitive, lio told him why that was wrong, and galo apologized and learned from it. the movie does a good job of showing you that galo has no problem with owning up to his mistakes and learning from them. that’s pretty good emotional awareness lol
also, at the end i will mention that galo’s pretty good at understanding his own emotions and knowing what to do about them, like when he goes to the lake to clear his head and work out his emotions bc he knows him being in the public eye and ppl associated him w the governor means he needs to be in control for his sake. he has trouble with this sometimes, not always making smart moves bc he is so emotionally driven, but he does acknowledge his emotions and try to deal with them in the best way he can. he could do this better if he went to THERAPY which he NEEDS -_- but that. is another topic. promare 2: everyone gets therapy
this got very all over the place, there’s so much you can talk about with it, but!! galo is a really good character thats a lot smarter- and more importantly, kinder- than people give him credit for, and i like talking about him :]
#SRY THIS IS SO LONG I WOULDVE PUT IT UNDER A READMORE BUT THOSE DONT LIKE.. STAY IF UR BLOG KICKS THE BUCKET..#anon#fess replies#long post#promare
biography
rebecca diana stevens wasn’t born out of love or sincerity, she was born to fulfill a a status quo. althea and joseph stevens had but one child before becca, one conceived out of wedlock and to a different woman. joseph stevens hailed from a political dynasty, his past ancestors holding powerful positions in government, and a son born from a college relationship with a woman of much lower status would only tarnish the political standing of the future governor of connecticut, mr. joseph stevens himself. so the family did what they knew best, and threw the entire possibility of a scandal under the rug, paying off joseph’s girlfriend to grant sole custody to him. it was only within a few short months that joseph’s mother set him up with the daughter of a fortune 500 ceo, althea santos. the two were attending yates university at the time, both in their senior year of school. the manufactured relationship quickly became a marriage within the next few years, althea claiming her stepson as one of her own, at least in front of the public eye. and within a years, rebecca diana stevens was brought into the world, her middle name inspired by the late princess diana, who althea had been fond of.
in the public eye, the stevens were a loving, wholesome family, deplete of any controversy. it was what led joseph to his government title. but underneath it, the stevens mirrored any family with exorbitant wealth and a powerful status.
growing up, becca had often felt like a robot. she simply smiled and waved to the cameras whenever asked, which was perhaps the slightest bit of emotion anyone saw out of her from a young age. but beyond that, she felt completely, and utterly empty, even as a child. she didn’t have a naturally friendly or kind bone in her body, unless told to have one. she destroyed things, threw tantrums erratically, and refused to speak unless it was necessary. because once the cameras and watching eyes were gone, becca’s parents didn’t treat her like how they did in front of a camera. it wasn’t that she was abused, it was that her parents didn’t care about her. she could scream bloody murder in the middle of the night, and they’d only send a nanny to her in hopes of shutting her up. it was clearly possible that young becca had used anger as a tool to get the attention of her careless parents, but after a while, a part of her had realized that there was nothing that could be done to get there attention. and as more time past, the less she wanted any.
as becca grew into her teens, the easiest term used to describe her would’ve been ‘loner.’ she hated any attention, almost as much as she began to hate people. she’d continued to listen to her parents, smile for the cameras, wear something that wasn’t black when dinner party season began, but underneath it all, she despised her parents. she dreamt that she was a witch, able to cast a hex on them and for the world to see how awful they really were. the only emotion becca seemed to ever feel was anger, and even that faded away with the use of antidepressants.
to those who met her, she was cold, and blunt, and if there wasn’t a camera to her face or a public official to wow, she had absolutely no filter. in high school, more often than not, you’d find her in the library with a black hoodie on reading a book, not because she cared an awful lot at school (despite ironically excelling at it), but because she knew it was a place no one would bother her. she was rich, and beautiful, and had every chance of being the queen bee of her boarding school. but she didn’t care to, she didn’t care about anything. after graduating, she chose to go to yates, her parent’s alma mater, instead of yale university, in the town she’d grown up in.
she’d joined calloway, even if a part of her felt that she’d fit into any society at yates. and by fit in, she meant ignore everyone’s presence. but being in yates was different. at least in high school, everyone had already known to leave her alone. there wasn’t an opportunity for her to be liked, because she’d already spent years cultivating an awful reputation. somehow, somewhere along the way, becca found herself caring about a few select people, as awful and wrong as it felt at the time. she still hated the majority of her peers, but some had managed to crack her dead heart. and she definitely hated that.
despite never admitting it, becca had come to yates as a virgin. she hadn’t ever been in a relationship, or even a casual hookup before. she hadn’t done much in her freshman year, but just as her 2nd year started, the relationship that gave her everything, only to take it all away begun. he was easy on the eyes, and she remembered him saying all the right words. he hadn’t cared that she was a bit meaner than most, and that she mostly had the emotional capacity of a rock. he’d tried, and tried, and eventually, becca let him in. she let herself believe that someone was capable of caring about her. everything was perfect in the beginning. she smiled, and laughed, and acted like one of the lovesick people she’d silently judged at one point. she was truly, and hopelessly, in love. until he cheated on her, that is. and then it was as if everything came crashing down. maybe if she hadn’t caught him sitting a little too close to a girl, running from the door instead of asking questions, they’d still be together. she didn’t have proof, but at the same time, she didn’t need any for her heart to feel completely shattered.
after crying for an hour and a half in the parking lot of a taco bell, becca was reminded of what she went through as a child, regressing into an old mentality, that showing emotion was pointless, that she wasn’t capable of being loved. she ignored him, and everyone after that. people checked in on her, and she acted as if it never even happened, still caring about those few select people, but always keeping her guard up.
headcanons
comes off as mean, and standoffish. can’t stand majority of people but will fake it until she makes it just to get through the day. if she does care about you, she’s still kinda guarded and never lets people know what shes really thinking, but she does care (deep down)
always wears black, and for some odd reason, always has an ominous black book at her side that’s contents are unknown.
is a polysci major because it just makes sense though it isnt really what she wants to do with her life (tuition ain’t free), she’d love to be an author and write fiction novels
can be very odd and dark at times like you’d think shes a vampire
has major insomnia and will usually be found at 7/11 or roaming the streets at 2am
plays obnoxiously loud music in her wired earphones because she doesn’t care
wanted connections
okay obviously i really want becca’s ex connection. she’s only had one boyfriend and he’s the only man who could break her heart. i’d love to plot this out because maybe he wasn’t even cheating??? lets give men a few rights okay, but this is definitely my biggest one
a best friend!! someone who gets her, probably understands how she’s feeling without her saying anything. she’s not really like the girl gang kinda girl but whatever
her half-brother is one of my wcs on the main but yes <3 i’d love to see their dynamic and what he’d be like
honestly anything!! friends, enemies, acquaintances, hookups, fwb !!!
i didnt realize it was 1972 again in the Philippines but with a fucking pandemic
the Philippine government just shut down a major news media company (ABS-CBN) because of its ‘expired franchise’ further cementing the fact that our country is going to live through another Martial Law soon.
let it be known that this comes after this administration’s constant attacking of the press and press freedom. the first major red flag was when the CEO of another news outlet (Rappler), Maria Ressa was imprisoned after the outlet’s continuous calling out of the administration’s many many bullshit.
since the beginning this pandemic has been used as an excuse to strengthen the military presence, including but not limited to: arresting people for violating guidelines, the president himself giving a shoot to kill order during a press conference when talking about violators or those resisting arrest or “disrespecting” officers (hence the rise of the slogan: Solusyong Medikal Hindi Militar [trans. “Medical solutions, not military”]). not once have they done anything to flatten the curve, provide aid for our frontliners - and in fact, in another (or the same tbh all his presscons happen at midnight or later bc theyre prerecorded but announced as “live” and sound like that drunk uncle at a party) press conference said that medical workers should be proud to die protecting the country.
this entire pandemic was painted as a battle, with
President Rodrigo Duterte saying that the medical workers and frontliners are “heroes” and “should be glad to die for our country”
military personnel being deployed and the strongest police presence in civilian community in what is already a very aggressive military-heavy administration
Salvador Panelo (chief legal counsel of the president) literally saying a day ago “the invasion of the COVID19 may be grounds for declaring Martial Law”
As all this is happening, according to the Department of Health only 0.1% of the population has been tested because we’re still not receiving mass testing on a national scale. any mass testing done has been because of the work of Local Government Units (LGUs) and often funded by the personal pockets of the governors or mayors because the national government isnt doing shit besides threatening violence.
This shutting down of one of the two biggest news outlets in the country is a major red flag. not only is this blatant silencing of press freedom and the freedom of speech, the last time this same news outlet was shut down was in 1972 right before then president Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law bringing in years of human rights abuses, “disappearances” and silencing, and torture. my father - someone who has never really spoken about local politics - heard the news and immediately told me that Martial Law is gonna happen soon because he was there the first time, so many survivors - people that still go through the trauma of being captured and tortured are witnessing the same thing happen today because another monster is in office.
protesters and activists have been at risk this whole administration with them often “disappearing” or suddenly and this honestly scares me more than the pandemic. so many of my friends have been a part of rallies, so many of us are is groups and so many of us have been red-tagged as a “communist rebel”. this is the final straw that we hoped would never actually come to pass.
idk what this post would rly do but please spread awareness of whats happening here.
ive said a bunch of times that i hate living through a historical event - but that was about a plague. and now the sentiment stands even stronger bc this has all happened before.
But we fought for our freedom from a dictator once before then we can do it again.
Broken Car, Lemon Bar by inhystereks | 27.8K
Stiles got out of his car so whoever was coming wouldn't think he was just being an asshole and stopped in the middle of the road on purpose. He almost laughed when he caught sight of the approaching car. A black Camaro. Which meant Derek Hale was the one slowing down to pull up behind him. The town mechanic and also the scariest fucker around.
Oh, sweet irony.
He was exactly the person Stiles desperately needed and was also terrified of.
Perfect.
Yes, well, you see . . .” Deucalion cleared his throat again. “In an effort for authenticity, the writer used an actual binding ceremony in the script. The casting director, wanting to make sure it was pronounced correctly, found an actual shaman to perform it. He did so.”
“You – you mean – are you saying that Derek and I are actually married?” Stiles managed to squeeze out of his rapidly closing throat.
The first Alpha werewolf to marry one of the recently deposed aristocracy.
It’s for the good of their people.
It’s an arrangement, one Stiles loathes.
But as Stiles learns more about werewolves and his grumpy husband. As Derek watches his proud, clumsy prince--
Maybe an arrangement isn’t all it can be.
Maybe what’s good for the people can be exactly what both of them need.
Bittersweet and Strange, Finding You Can Change (Learning You Were Wrong) by WithMyTeeth (Ylith) | 49.9K
When perpetual loner and failwolf extraordinaire Derek Hale finally loses patience with his meddling family, he grabs a confused Stiles Stilinski, unsuspecting diner patron and herbal medicine student, off the street to pose as his new boyfriend. Hijinks ensue.
Why Republicans Are Wrong About Everything
New Post has been published on https://www.patriotsnet.com/why-republicans-are-wrong-about-everything/
Why Republicans Are Wrong About Everything
Why So Many Republicans Cling To Trump
Saagar Enjeti: Trump, GOP, On Wrong Side Of EVERYTHING Since Coronavirus Began
Ben Shapiro got part of it right. A toxic mix of status anxiety, persecution fears, and echoes of the Civil War helps explain why they follow Trump into the abyss.
On September 17, 1862, over 10,000 Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing in a single day at the Battle of Antietam. Very few of them came from slave-owning families, so why did they agree to give their lives in defense of human bondage?
I was reminded of this question when I noticed that Politico Playbook had recruited conservative celebrity and author Ben Shapiro;to explain why the vast majority of House Republicans voted not to impeach President Trump on Wednesday for sending a murderous mob after them on January 6. Politico was slammed by liberals for opening its best-known section to a conservative whos been charged with being bigoted and intolerant. But Shapiros explanation of the rallying around Trump during his final days wasnt totally off base. He was on to something about how Republicans see the world.
With Trump leaving office within a week, defending his incitement of an insurrection doesnt seem to be in the long-term self-interest of Republican officeholders.;But the Civil War example helps explain why people sometimes do very self-destructive things out of spite or insecurity.
White supremacy was such a consensus view at the time that Lincoln felt compelled to defend it.
Like the rebels at Antietam, no one wants to die for nothing.
Why Are Republicans So Mean
Let’s state right off-the-bat that conservatives indeed have much to offer. In fact, the very notion of conservatism itself keeps us grounded in tradition and prevents our society from spinning into the chaos of constant flux that would surely result if we were to impetuously pursue every new liberal idea to spring forth from our fertile minds. And conservatives admirably believe in America, established order, family, freedom, and success. This all sounds wonderful.
But when it comes to other people who happen to be different from the establishment, Republicans seem to be downright mean and nasty.
We are constantly reminded of the meanness of Republicans over and over again. One recent example is evident in the xenophobic remarks of the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, who recently referred to Mexican and other immigrants as rapists and murderers.
Basic common sense, however, tells us that human beings are not any more or less violent based upon where on a map they happened to have been born. And the evidence in studies bears this out as well by indicating that immigrants are no more likely to be violent than members of the overall population. Makes sense.
But Republicans seem to harbor some sort of a fear of foreigners and an aversion against other kinds of people who are not part of the established in-group. Their view seems to be that these other people are not like us, they pose a threat to us , and thus automatically they should be regarded as enemies.
There Arent Real Forces Within The Gop Leading Change
There is some appetite for change within the GOP. In those 2024 polls, at least a third of Republicans either were supporting a GOP presidential candidate other than Trump or were undecided.;
In YouGov Blues polling, only about 40 percent of Republicans identified themselves as Trump Republicans. A recent survey from Fabrizio, Lee and Associates, a GOP-leaning firm that worked on Trumps presidential campaigns, found that about 40 percent of Republican voters didnt want Trump to continue to be a leader in the party. Those numbers dont necessarily mean that those voters want the GOP to change drastically. But there is a substantial number of Trump-skeptical/ready-to-move-on-from-Trump Republican voters. But that sentiment isnt really showing up in the Republican Partys actions during the last three months basically everything GOP officials in states and in Washington are doing lines up with the Trumpian approach. So what gives?;
It is hard to see Republicans changing course, even if a meaningful minority of voters in the party wants changes, without some elite institutions and powerful people in the party pushing a new vision. And its hard to see real anti-Trumpism forces emerging in the GOP right now.;
Reality Check : Biden Cant Be Fdr
Theres no question that Biden is swinging for the fences. Beyond the emerging bipartisan infrastructure bill, he has proposed a far-reaching series of programs that would collectively move the United States several steps closer to the kind of social democracy prevalent in most industrialized nations: free community college, big support for childcare and homebound seniors, a sharp increase in Medicaid, more people eligible for Medicare, a reinvigorated labor movement. It is why 100 days into the administration, NPR was asking a commonly heard question: Can Biden Join FDR and LBJ In The Democratic Party’s Pantheon?
But the FDR and LBJ examples show conclusively why visions of a transformational Biden agenda are so hard to turn into reality. In 1933, FDR had won a huge popular and electoral landslide, after which he had a three-to-one Democratic majority in the House and a 59-vote majority in the Senate. Similarly, LBJ in 1964 had won a massive popular and electoral vote landslide, along with a Senate with 69 Democrats and a House with 295. Last November, on the other hand, only 42,000 votes in three key states kept Trump from winning re-election. Democrats losses in the House whittled their margin down to mid-single digits. The Senate is 50-50.
Most Republicans Said That President Obama Should Be Impeached Because Of The 2012 Attack On The Us Consulate In Benghazi
Their own investigations, however, proved them wrong. Every Congressional inquiry, including those by the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee, concluded that the Obama administration did nothing wrong regarding Benghazi, that there was no stand down order given, and that neither the President nor anyone in his administration lied about it. Each and every Republican investigation has reached this same conclusion, but Republicans continue to exploit this tragedy for political gain.
Nominating Mitt Romney For President
Despite the failure to grab the Senate, the GOP was still riding strong anti-Obamacare sentiment and voter frustration over the slow recovery from the Great Recession. Much of this was fueled by the Tea Party movement, which added a rare Republican grassroots element to the GOP.
When you think about it now, all of that made former Mitt Romney an extremely odd choice for the Republican nomination for president in 2012. He embodied the establishment GOP in almost every way. Romney had years as a hedge fund manager at Bain Capital on his resume at a time when most Americans were still blaming Wall Street for the nation’s economic woes. Worst of all, his universal health coverage plan enacted while he was governor of Massachusetts looked eerily like Obamacare. In fact, “Romneycare” was seen as one of the models the crafters of the Affordable Care Act used when they wrote the law. If the GOP wanted to put up a candidate who invigorated its anti-Obamacare and increasingly anti-establishment base, they couldn’t have missed the mark much more than they did with Mitt Romney.
Bidens Bill Is More Popular
We live in the middle of an era of tremendous polarization, yet Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan is shockingly popular. Its one of the most popular, least polarizing pieces of legislation in recent memory. According to a recent Politico/Morning Consultpoll, 76 percent of voters support Bidens plan, including a majority of Republicans.
Its worth noting that most polls show that 70 percent or so of Republicans believe Joe Biden is an illegitimate president. Therefore, a large segment of people who think Biden stole the election also supports his COVID and economic recovery plans.
Obamas Recovery Act was never this popular. A January 2009 Gallup poll found that the public favored Obamas plan 52 percent to 38 percent.
These are good numbers but nowhere near the sky-high popularity of the Biden plan. At the time of this poll, Obamas approval rating was hovering around 70 percent. Bidens plan is more popular than he is Bidens job approval is 52.8 per FiveThirtyEight. That disparity is evidence of Bidens COVID plan’s political durability and the dangerous game Republicans are playing by opposing it. People who dont like Biden but like his plan are the exact people who the Republicans need to win over to take back Congress.
Times Republicans Were Wrong
It’s no secret that politicians tend to use exaggerated political rhetoric to get people to vote for them. In recent decades, Republicans have repeatedly made very ominous predictions about the horrors that will result from Democratic policies while painting a rosy picture of what will result from Republican policies. Now we have the luxury of looking back over the years to examine those predictions and policies. Below, you will find twenty-one examples of times Republicans were blatantly wrong.
Taking The Perspective Of Others Proved To Be Really Hard
Why both Democrats and Republicans are wrong on inflation
The divide in the United States is wide, and one indication of that is how difficult our question proved for many thoughtful citizens. A 77-year-old Republican woman from Pennsylvania was typical of the voters who struggled with this question, telling us, This is really hard for me to even try to think like a devilcrat!, I am sorry but I in all honesty cannot answer this question. I cannot even wrap my mind around any reason they would be good for this country.
Similarly, a 53-year-old Republican from Virginia said, I honestly cannot even pretend to be a Democrat and try to come up with anything positive at all, but, I guess they would vote Democrat because they are illegal immigrants and they are promised many benefits to voting for that party. Also, just to follow what others are doing. And third would be just because they hate Trump so much. The picture she paints of the typical Democratic voter being an immigrant, who goes along with their party or simply hates Trump will seem like a strange caricature to most Democratic voters. But her answer seems to lack the animus of many.;;
Democrats struggled just as much as Republicans. A 33-year-old woman from California told said, i really am going to have a hard time doing this but then offered that Republicans are morally right as in values, going to protect us from terrorest and immigrants, going to create jobs.
Don’t Miss: What Color Ties Do Republicans Wear
Reality Check #: The Electoral College And The Senate Are Profoundly Undemocraticand Were Stuck With Them
Because the Constitution set up a state-by-state system for picking presidents, the massive Democratic majorities we now see in California and New York often mislead us about the partys national electoral prospects. In 2016, Hillary Clintons 3-million-vote plurality came entirely from California. In 2020, Bidens 7-million-vote edge came entirely from California and New York. These are largely what election experts call wasted votesDemocratic votes that dont, ultimately, help the Democrat to win. That imbalance explains why Trump won the Electoral College in 2016 and came within a handful of votes in three states from doing the same last November, despite his decisive popular-vote losses.
The response from aggrieved Democrats? Abolish the Electoral College! In practice, theyd need to get two-thirds of the House and Senate, and three-fourths of the state legislatures, to ditch the process that gives Republicans their only plausible chance these days to win the White House. Shortly after the 2016 election, Gallup found that Republican support for abolishing the electoral college had dropped to 19 percent. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a state-by-state scheme to effectively abolish the Electoral College without changing the Constitution, hasnt seen support from a single red or purple state.
Surrendering Before The Battle
The midterm elections of 2014 gave the Republicans control of the Senate that they should have won in 2010. But even before the new members took their oaths of office, then-Senate Majority Leader-elect Mitch McConnell promised never to trigger a government shutdown. That effectively took the sharpest arrow out of the GOP’s congressional quiver, and again relieved the greatest pressure the Republicans could have exercised against Obama.
Don’t Miss: Did Donald Trump Say Republicans Are The Dumbest Group Of Voters
Unified Republican Opposition To Obama’s Policies Helped Them Retake Congress In 2010 Here’s Why It May Not Work Again
When the House of Representatives passed President Bidens COVID-relief plan last weekend, every single Republican voted against it. Earlier this week, Senator John Thune, Mitch McConnells deputy, predicted that every Republican Senator would vote against the Biden plan. Thunes reasoning was typically cynical. He said the Republicans wanted to:
make the Democrats own a piece of legislation that I think is going to have long-term adverse consequences.
This was the latest example of Republicans saying the quiet part out loud. Thune is admitting they are making a bet that the Biden plan wont work, and Republicans can reap the political rewards of a sub-standard economy in 2022. This is the same bet the Republicans made in 2009 when they decided to oppose Barack Obamas efforts to address the financial crisis.
Politically, the 2009 bet paid off. The Republicans rode a wave of economic discontent to control of the House and a massive set of wins down-ballot that would impact politics for more than a decade. But just because it worked then doesnt mean it will work now. The Republicans may be making a massive miscalculation by re-fighting the last war.
Republicans Said President Obama Would Raise Taxes Sky High
It never happened. Income taxes for over 95% of Americans remained the same or lower than they were before Obama was elected. The only people whose income taxes increased were those who make more than $400,000 per year, and their taxes rose only 3%. For most Americans, taxes are still lower now than they were under Reagan.
Blowing The Midterm Elections
The 2008 elections gave Barack Obama a clear win in the presidential election and the Democrats a filibuster-proof supermajority in Congress. They proceeded to spend that political capital almost entirely on passing Obamacare in a lengthy process that included a number of unusual compromises with their own party members, like the “Cornhusker Kickback” and controversial legislative tricks like the “deemed as passed” maneuver. All of this took place even as the Affordable Care Act failed to gain majority support in the polls.
That set the stage for a strong Republican advantage going into the 2010 midterm elections. On paper, the GOP did score a resounding victory, picking up 63 seats in the House of Representatives and a net gain of six seats in the Senate.
But Republicans blew a solid chance to retake the Senate. They put up weak candidates in several winnable races. They included Sharon Angle in Nevada, who was seen as too radical and managed to lose to then-incumbent Harry Reid despite his very weak approval ratings in his home state. Arch-abortion opponent Ken Buck won the GOP nomination in Colorado, . The biggest mistake of all was Christine O’Donnell in Delaware. O’Donnell lost after she became infamous for her revelation that she had once experimented with witchcraft.
As a result, the Democrats kept control of the Senate and the Republicans lost a chance to force Obama into what could have been a series of advantageous compromises over the next six years.
The Gop Is A Grave Threat To American Democracy
Unless and until Republicans summon the wit and the will to salvage the party, ruin will follow.
The hope of many conservative critics of Donald Trump was that soon after his defeat, and especially in the aftermath of the January 6 insurrection, the Republican Party would snap back into its former shape. The Trump presidency would end up being no more than an ugly parenthesis. The GOP would distance itself from Trump and Trumpism, and become a normal party once again.
But that dream soon died. The Trump presidency might have been the first act in a longer and even darker political drama, in which the Republican Party is becoming more radicalized. How long this will last is an open question; whether it is happening is not.
To better grasp whats happening among 2020 Trump voters, I spoke with Sarah Longwell, a lifelong conservative and political strategist who is now the publisher of The Bulwark, a news and opinion website that is home to anti-Trump conservatives. She is also the founder of Republican Voters Against Trump, now the Republican Accountability Project.
Prior To Going To War In Iraq Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Optimistically Predicted The Iraq War Might Last Six Days Six Weeks I Doubt Six Months
What’s more, Vice-President Dick Cheney said we would be greeted as liberators by the Iraqi people after we overthrow Saddam.
They were both horribly wrong. Instead of six weeks or six months, the Iraq war lasted eight long and bloody years costing thousands of American lives. It led to an Iraqi civil war between the Sunnis and the Shiites that took hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives. Many Iraqi militia groups were formed to fight against the U.S. forces that occupied Iraq. Whats more, Al Qaeda, which did not exist in Iraq before the war, used the turmoil in Iraq to establish a new foothold in that country.
The Iraq war was arguably the most tragic foreign policy blunder in US history.
Did Republicans And Democrats Switch Names
The Party Of Kennedy V The Party Of Nixon In The Civil Rights Era
youtube
Two things started happening at the same time:
Racist Democrats were getting antsy
Neither party could afford to ignore civil rights anymore
In 1960 Kennedy defeated Nixon. At the time of his election, the both parties unevenly supported civil rights. But President Kennedy decided to move forward.
After Kennedys assassination in 1963, Johnson continued Kennedys civil rights focus.
As you can imagine, that did not sit particularly well with most Southern Democrats. This is when Strom Thurmond flew the coop for good.
In fact, a greater percentage of Congressional Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than did Democrats. Support for the Act followed geographic, not party, lines.
Soon after, the Republicans came up with their Southern Strategy a plan to woo white Southern voters to the party for the 1968 election.
The Kennedy and Johnson administrations had advanced civil rights, largely through national legislation and direct executive actions. So, the Southern Strategy was the opposite states rights and no integration.
As in the Civil War, the concepts of states rights and tradition, were codes for maintaining white supremacy.
Starting with Thurmond in 1964, and continuing throughout the Johnson and Nixon administrations, Dixiecrats left the Democrats for the Republicans.
The Parties Change Course
After the war, the Republican Party became more and more oriented towards economic growth, industry, and big business in Northern states, and in the beginning of the 20th century it had reached a general status as a party for the more wealthy classes in society. Many Republicans therefore gained financial success in the prosperous 1920s until the stock market crashed in 1929 initiating the era of the Great Depression.
Now, many Americans blamed Republican President Herbert Hoover for the financial damages brought by the crisis. In 1932 the country therefore instead elected Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt to be president.
The Democratic Party largely stayed in power until 1980, when Republican Ronald Reagan was elected as president. Reagans social conservative politics and emphasis on cutting taxes, preserving family values, and increasing military funding were important steps in defining the modern Republican Party platform.
Chuck Cooper Becomes First African American Selected In Nba Draft
The Dixie Democrats seceding from the Democratic Party. The rump convention, called after the Democrats had attached President Trumans civil rights program to the party platform, placed Governor Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and Governor Fielding L. Wright of Mississippi in nomination.
Up until the post-World War II period, the partys hold on the region was so entrenched that Southern politicians usually couldnt get elected unless they were Democrats. But when President Harry S. Truman, a Democratic Southerner, introduced a pro-civil rights platform at the partys 1948 convention, a faction walked out.
These defectors, known as the Dixiecrats, held a separate convention in Birmingham, Alabama. There, they nominated South Carolina Governor Strom Thurmond, a staunch opposer of civil rights, to run for president on their States Rights ticket. Although Thurmond lost the election to Truman, he still won over a million popular votes.
It was the first time since before the Civil War that the South was not solidly Democratic, Goldfield says. And that began the erosion of the southern influence in the Democratic party.
After that, the majority of the South still continued to vote Democratic because it thought of the Republican party as the party of Abraham Lincoln and Reconstruction. The big break didnt come until President Johnson, another Southern Democrat, signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
The Parties Did Not Switch Platforms
From a business perspective, Rauchway pointed out, the loyalties of the parties did not really switch. Although the rhetoric and to a degree the policies of the parties do switch places, he wrote, their core supporters dont which is to say, the Republicans remain, throughout, the party of bigger businesses; its just that in the earlier era bigger businesses want bigger government and in the later era they dont.
In other words, businesses needed things that a bigger government could provide, such as infrastructure. Once these things were in place, a small, hands-off government became better for business. The parties did not switch in the 1960s either. The changes started decades earlier.
When Did The Democratic And Republican Platforms Switch
As noted above, the planks, platforms, ideologies and even the names of the American political parties switched often, and at many different points. We call these changes: the first party system, second party system, third party system, fourth party system, and todays fifth party system .
Some changes stick out like a sore thumb, but most of the changes between party systems happened slowly over time. Its hard to summarize or detail every issue, but the keys are names like Free Soil, Free Silver, Bourbon Democrats, anti-slavery Republicans, Stalwarts, Half-Breeds, American Independent, and other telling titles of factions or third parties whose members inevitably have gravitated toward a major party over time.
When we cant cut through the rhetoric, we can look at voting records to see which party favored what.
Its important to note, that the current parties werent established until the 1850s . From this point forward is when the major switching happens, but it is also when issues we consider important today take center stage for the first time. When Lincoln takes office, the Republican party is only a few years old, prior to this the ideology is roughly the same and they are called Federalists, and then Whigs. The same is true for anti-Federalists, Democratic-Republicans, and Jacksonian Democrats.
Perhaps the best answer to, when did the platforms switch, is: under Lincoln, the Roosevelts, and LBJ.
An Overview Of Platform Switching Between Republicans And Democrats
Above we gave a summary of the party systems, below we will look at key changes, key voter issues, and provide more details and justifications .
With the above said, there isnt one change that results in the political realignments and platform switches that define the Party Systems; instead, there are many.
Below is an overview of the most important changes alongside a quick history of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
Why Did Parties Switch Platforms And Members
The common thread of each major switch, aside from war, was civil rights. Or maybe we could more fairly say, state-enforced social and economic justice versus individual liberty as is illustrated by the charts on this page.
Civil rights aside, since before the first party was formed, our founding fathers have fought each other tooth and nail over the direction of the country. The biggest issues have been: big business versus small business, big government versus small government , big government versus small government , whether or not to have a central bank, and how much local and foreign credit and debt was the right amount.
We can see how some of the above values are consistent for a given quadrant of the political sphere, but not for a specific party in a two party system or even a faction or member of a party at a given time! We can also see how specific groups have shifted their interpretation of these things over time, and how some groups simply pay lip-service to the overarching ideals.
The planks and platforms of each opposing group have changed over time, as specific stances on these issues were taken, and as public opinion changed with the times.
A Response To The Claim Welfare Is Equatable To Slavery
In the 1850s, inequality in the Northern big government cities, northern immigration in the big cities , and African slavery in the small government south all existed side-by-side. and in ways, so it is today . Northern cities still favor bigger government, and they still have problems of racism and inequality, Rural South still favors small government . This does not make the North of today equatable to the slave economy of the South of yesterday however.
There is this idea that welfare is equatable to slavery in this respect, as in both cases a societal structure is providing basic essentials for a class of people . This argument, often presented in tandem with the claim the parties didnt switch/change is essentially a red herring that misses the nuances we describe on this page .
The southern conservatives who held slaves and fought for the Confederacy essentially switched out of the Democratic party starting in the 1960s, and even continuing to the modern day , in response to LBJs welfare programs . In other words, if the southern conservative had wanted to oppress a class of people with welfare, one would logically assume they wouldnt have switched out of the Democratic party over time in response to welfare programs.
Today it is a Southern Republican who flies to Confederate flag, today it is a Republican who champions small government in America. Yesterday, it was a Southern Democrat.
The Third Party System: Reconstruction And The Gilded Age
youtube
Post-Civil War era politics in the United States can be understood by examining the Third Party System factions of Reconstruction and the Gilded Age.
In the Gilded Age things change in a major way due to both parties embracing cronyism but before we get there we need to understand Reconstruction.
The changes in the Republican party in this era are best explained by looking at the conservative, moderate, and radical Republicans of Reconstruction . Meanwhile factions like carpet baggers and ex-Southern Unionist scallywags are illustrative of different reconstruction Democrats.
Here it is vital to note one of the hardest things to talk about in American history, but Ill say it plain. The South didnt want to lose the war, they wanted to win, they didnt want to stop slavery, they wanted to continue it. They did not respond well to losing the war. Lincoln was immediately executed, Andrew Johnson took over, he was impeached, and the military had to occupy the south while the KKK committed what was frankly genocide against Freedmen.
As noted above, Reconstruction was part rebuilding, part Civil Rights , part enforcing actual law and order and preventing forced slavery under different names and murder , and part .
The Redeemers completely changed the Democratic party by unifying the non-racist factions and moving the Democratic party toward business interests .
What Year Did The Democrats And Republicans Switch Platforms
4.4/5DemocraticRepublicansRepublicansDemocratsDemocrats
After the end of Reconstruction the Republican Party generally dominated the North while a resurgent Democratic Party dominated the South. By the late 19th century, as the Democratic and Republican parties became more established, party switching became less frequent.
Beside above, when did the South become Republican? Via the “Republican Revolution” in the 1994 elections, Republicans captured a majority of Southern House seats for the first time. Today, the South is considered a Republican stronghold at the state and federal levels, with Republicans holding majorities in every Southern state after the 2014 elections.
Similarly one may ask, when did Republicans and Democrats switch colors?
Since the 1984 election, CBS has used the opposite scheme: blue for Democrats, red for Republicans. ABC used yellow for Republicans and blue for Democrats in 1976, then red for Republicans and blue for Democrats in 1980 and 1984, and 1988.
What were the views of the Democratic Republican Party?
Democratic–Republicans were deeply committed to the principles of republicanism, which they feared were threatened by the supposed monarchical tendencies of the Federalists. During the 1790s, the party strongly opposed Federalist programs, including the national bank.
How Republicans Gave Up On Reforming The South
University of North Carolina
As mentioned above, Republicans had done a lot to help former slaves in the South, but many of the gains they had made existed more on paper than in practice, and others were in danger of being rolled back.
And indeed, the backlash soon arrived. In the South, whites were dead set against what Radicals had done, and were willing to use violence to fight it.
In the North, whites essentially thought theyd done more than enough for black Southerners at this point. Businessmen wanted their own interests to take center stage. Some intellectuals worried about the federal government squelching states rights.
And public opinion turned there was little appetite among white Northerners for an indefinite violent federal occupation of the South.
But most Republicans no longer cared. The party had achieved its founding aim and had gone quite a bit further, since the Slave Power was now a thing of the past, and that provided a handy rationalization for not doing more. The cause of equal rights for black citizens would now essentially vanish from national American politics for decades.
How The Democrats Became Socially Liberal
The Third Party Democrats began to change from social conservative to social progressive in the 1890s at the end of the Gilded Age under the progressive populist Democrat William Jennings Bryan. Under Bryan, the Democratic Party became increasingly socially progressive and necessarily authoritative. From Bryan to Wilson, to LBJ, to Clinton the Democratic Party increasingly favored progressive social liberalism regarding government enforced social justice and economic intervention over governance, this attracted progressive Republicans and drove social conservatives from the party over time.
TIP: See History of the United States Democratic Party.
Third Party System: Republicans Versus Democrats The Battle Begins 1854
The Democrats of this era were against big government telling states whether or not they can own slaves, and they dont want big banks. See the Democratic Party Platform of 1856. The Democrats still saw themselves as the Liberal party of Jefferson and Jackson, the small business farm owning libertarians. Meanwhile, the Republicans were a new iteration of the parties of Hamilton and Clay, but with different factions supporting them then when they were Whigs.
The Republicans are for modernization. They are against slavery, for central banks, and for bigger industrialized business. They embrace ideas of taxes, credits, and debts in the interest of prosperity and social justice. They embrace many of the economic policies of the Whigs, such as national banks, railroads, high tariffs, homesteads, and aid to land grant colleges .
The Republicans also become known as a pro-business party at the time . The Republican coalition consisted of businesspeople, shop owners, skilled craftsmen, clerks, and professionals who were attracted to the partys modernization policies.
Meanwhile, the race issue pulled the great majority of white southerners into the Democratic Party as . The Republicans want a more northern style of commerce and banks, and Democrats want a smaller farmer-based economy, with less government and no central bank. See the Republican Party Platform of 1856 here
The Switch that Starts With Civil War
The Republican Sixth Party Strategy Where The Tea Party And Alt
Everything noted so far leads up to one other thing that needs to be discussed on its own .
After Voting Rights 1965 it wasnt just a matter of switching the South, it was a matter of taking that 1930s conservative coalition to the next level and the Republicans switching themselves .
No social conservative faction was strong enough on its own to win an election, not after Voting Rights, but together, under a strategically planned big tent, the social conservatives and establishment conservatives could create a siren-like Frankensteins monster to push for free-enterprise and socially conservative values against the progressive state an increasingly progressive Democratic Party .
This story involves:
The Powell memo, the southern strategy, the John Birch Society, the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine, Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan, Norquist, Roger Aisle, Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, Fox News, Reagan, Right-Wing Radio, Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, and a vast right-wing conspiracy aimed at getting the many different social conservative and establishment conservative factions to adopt each others ideology .
Essentially, the Conservative Coalition in their fight against Communism and liberal democrats since WWI, but especially when their hand was forced post 1965, have created the modern right-wing populist political machine to counter the lefts own political machine .
Neither Party Is Completely Blameless
The political history of African-Americans is often proved Douglas right. Yet, no one from any background whether a political, religious, or racial background should ever love any political party above principle. Although, history is clear that there have been major differences in how political parties treated black Americans. Neither party is completely blameless in all of its actions, nor have all the leaders in a party always been good or always been bad.
Understanding this truth, Representative Robert Brown Elliot, even though he was a strong Republican leader in his day, wisely advised, I am a slave to principles. I call no political party master. I have ever most sincerely embraced the democratic and representative ideal. Not indeed, as represented or professed by any political party but by its true significance, as transfigured in the Declaration of Independence and in the injunctions of Christianity.
Elliots admonition is wise. A line with political candidates that conform to what he called, The Injunctions of Christianity.
Those Racist Dixiecrats Create Mainstream Republican Policy
But their ideas formed modern GOPs core platform.
In a campaign ad, Democrat-turned-Republican Jesse Helms said racial quotas prevented white people from getting jobs. The lie of racial quotas persists in the GOPs rejection of affirmative action. Racial quotas are illegal.
Take the idea of special interests. Heres Helms view, as a Republican:
Are civil rights only for Negroes? While women in Washington who have been raped and mugged on the streets in broad daylight have experienced the most revolting sort of violation of their civil rights. The hundreds of others who have had their purses snatched by Negro hoodlums may understandably insist that their right to walk the street unmolested was violated. Television commentary, 1963, quoted in The Charlotte Observer.
But you would think that Ted Cruz would have a clearer understanding of the connections between the Dixiecrats and the Republican Party.
He loves Jesse Helms.
The Myth Of The Republican
youtube
When faced with the sobering reality that Democrats supported slavery, started the Civil War when the abolitionist Republican Party won the Presidency, established the Ku Klux Klan to brutalize newly freed slaves and keep them from voting, opposed the Civil Rights Movement, modern-day liberals reflexively perpetuate rather pernicious myth–that the racist southern Democrats of the 1950s and 1960s became Republicans, leading to the so-called “switch” of the parties.
This is as ridiculous as it is easily debunked.
The Republican Party, of course, was founded in 1848 with the abolition of slavery as its core mission. Almost immediately after its second presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln, won the 1860 election, Democrat-controlled southern states seceded on the assumption that Lincoln would destroy their slave-based economies.
Once the Civil War ended, the newly freed slaves as expected flocked to the Republican Party, but Democrat control of the South from Reconstruction until the Civil Rights Era was near total. In 1960, Democrats held every Senate seat south of the Mason-Dixon line. In the 13 states that made up the Confederacy a century earlier, Democrats held a staggering 117-8 advantage in the House of Representatives. The Democratic Party was so strong in the south that those 117 House members made up a full 41% of Democrats’ 283-153 advantage in the Chamber.
So how did this myth of a sudden “switch” get started?
It would not be the last time they used it.
Did The Democrats And Republicans Switch Parties
The US political parties, now called and , switched platform planks, , and many times in American history. These switches were typically spurred on by major legislative changes and events, such as the Civil War in the 1860s, and Civil Rights in the 1960s. The changes then unfolded over the course of decades to create what historians call the Party Systems.
What Does Democratic Mean
Starting alphabetically, the word means pertaining to or of the nature of democracy or a democracy.
Simply put, the lowercase democratic is a word used to refer to anything that resembles or has to do with a , a form of in which the supreme power rests with the people and is exercised by them directly or by politicians that they elect to them. In practice, this is usually accomplished through a fair, organized system of voting, in which or cast votes in support of political or societal issues .
So, the word democratic is used to describe government systems that are or resemble democracies and the people that run these types of governments. The United States of America is a representative democracy in which the people elect representatives to perform the demands of politics on their behalf. This is why we say that the US is a democratic country or that we have a democratic form of government.
The English word democratic dates all the way back to the late 1500 and early 1600s. It is derived from the Greek word dmokratía . The government system of the ancient Greek of Athens, in which the people held the power , is considered the worlds first democracy. Considering that Athens was a slave-owning society, its form of democracy was much different than the democratic governments of today.
The South And The House Go Republican
Jonathan Davis, Arizona State University
I think we just delivered the South to the Republican Party for a long time to come, President Johnson said shortly after signing the Civil Rights Act, according to his aide . And indeed, Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina switched his party affiliation from Democratic to Republican specifically for this reason.
Yet party loyalties take a long time to shake off, and the shift of white Southerners from being solid Democrats to solid Republicans was in reality more gradual.
And while race played an important role in this shift, other issues played roles too. White evangelical Christians became newly mobilized to oppose abortion and take stands on other culture war issues, and felt more at home with the conservative party. There was that suspicion of big government and lack of union organization that permeated the region. And talented politicians like Ronald Reagan promised to defend traditional values.
Still, Democrats continued to maintain control of the House of Representatives for some time, in large part because of continued support from Southerners, as shown in this map by Jonathan Davis at Arizona State University. But in 1994, the revolution finally arrived, as Republicans took the House for the first time since 1955. And many of the crucial pickups that made that possible came in the South.
Understanding The Basics: How The Parties Changed General Us Party History And Why The Big Switch Isnt A Myth
Above we did an introduction, this next section takes a very general look at how the major parties changed and how factions changed parties.
To sum things up before we get started discussing specific switches, both major U.S. parties used to have notable progressive socially liberal left-wing and socially conservative right-wing , and now they dont.
Originally, like today, one party was for big government and one party was for small government .
However, unlike today, party lines were originally drawn over elitism and populism and preferred government type more than by the left-right social issues that define the parties today, as the namesake of the parties themselves imply .
In those days both parties had progressive and conservative wings, but the Southern Anti-Federalist, Democratic-Republican, and then Democratic Party was populist and favored small government, and the Northern Federalist, Whig, and then Republican Party was elite and favored bigger central government.
However, from the lines drawn during the Civil War, to Bryan in the Gilded Age, to Teddy Roosevelt leaving the Republican Party to form the Progressive Party in 1912, to FDRs New Deal, to LBJs Civil Rights, to the Clinton and Bush era, the above became less and less true.
Instead, today the parties are polarized by left-right social issues, and each party has a notable populist and elitist wing.
