Al Pacino Cracks Up 'Tonight Show' With Story About His Most Engaged Audience
Al Pacino Cracks Up ‘Tonight Show’ With Story About His Most Engaged Audience
Actor Al Pacino said Monday he had never performed before a more rapt theater audience than one night in Boston. Then he revealed the surprising reason why. (Watch the video below.) In an appearance on “The Tonight Show” to promote the second season of “Hunters” on Prime Video, Pacino took viewers back to the 1970s when he appeared in “The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel,” for which he would…

“It's hard for people to believe that actors can be shy, but Al is shy. In his acting, his instrument is himself, his emotional nakedness. So other than acting, he tries his damnedest not to bare himself." — Sidney Lumet in the September 1992 issue of GQ. (I haven't decided if this pic is a 1971 shot by Joe Wlodarz or a 1972 Pavlo Hummel pic by Cameron Forbes, so I'll credit both and hope one is correct.)

He gained favorable notice for his first lead role as a heroin addict in The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Wide acclaim and recognition came with his breakthrough role as Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), for which he received his first Oscar nomination, and he would reprise the role in the sequels The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990).
Pacino received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Serpico (1973), The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and ...And Justice for All (1979), ultimately winning it for playing a blind military veteran in Scent of a Woman (1992). Your Fave MIGHT Be Catholic: Al Pacino
Known for: Academy Award winning, Tony Award winning, Emmy Award winning, & Golden Globe winning actor & filmmaker of film & stage, he is considered one of the greatest actors of all time, & has starred in several of the most iconic & acclaimed films ever made. He grew up in New York City, & when he was young he was a student of both HB Studio & the Actors Studio, & years later he would become one of the presidents of the latter studio. He started his career as a stage actor in the 1960s, until eventually he transitioned into film, & soon he became the icon that he is today. To this day, he continues acting in both theater & film, & has several awards to boot (being one of the few actors to receive what is called the “Triple Crown”). Notable theater shows he has done over the years include Awake & Sing!, America, Hurrah, The Indian Wants The Bronx, Does A Tiger Wear A Necktie?, Camino Real, The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Richard III, American Buffalo, Julius Caesar, Chinese Coffee, Salome, Hughie, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Orphans, The Merchant of Venice, Glengarry Glen Ross, & China Doll. His film career includes Me, Natalie, The Panic in Needle Park, The Godfather, Serpico, Scarecrow, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, Bobby Deerfield, ...And Justice For All, Author! Author!, Scarface, Revolution, Dick Tracy, The Godfather Part III, Frankie & Johnny, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Woman, Heat, City Hall, Looking for Richard, Donnie Brasco, The Devil’s Advocate, The Insider, Any Given Sunday, Insomnia, The Recruit, Angels in America, 88 Minutes, Ocean’s Thirteen, Righteous Kill, Stand Up Guys, Manglehorn, The Humbling, Danny Collins, Misconduct, The Pirates of Somalia, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, & the upcoming The Irishman. In short, he’s one of the most beloved & acclaimed actors in Hollywood who still acts to this day!
Why I say MIGHT as opposed to IS: The truth of the matter is, Al is very good at keeping a lot of personal information to himself, & thus there aren’t any reliable sources that state what his religious beliefs are. What makes things more complicated is that many websites state things that are very contradictory, & thus it’s hard to figure out what’s true & what isn’t. On the one hand, Ranker.com features Al on their list of Catholic celebrities, & even mentions that growing up he was born & raised Catholic (which is certainly believable, given his family is entirely Italian & raised him up as such). On the other hand, many other websites, including Who’s Dated Who, have Al listed as Agnostic. Then there was another site that’s been lost that states that Al converted to Islam. In short, it seems that Al likes to keep his life very mysterious, & thus we don’t know for sure what his beliefs truly are. But it’s still entirely possible that he’s Catholic.
If this post is wrong: If this post is incorrect & Al has stated in a reliable source that he practices a different religion entirely or no religion at all, then please politely inform me in an ask & I’ll have this changed right away!

Performers bring the heat to Chamber Theatre's "Strange Snow"
Performers bring the heat to Chamber Theatre’s “Strange Snow”

For decades audiences have been revisiting the pain of America’s participation in the Vietnam War, and the fraught return home by many of its veterans. From David Rabe’s trilogy of plays, including “Streamers” and “The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel,” to the docudramas “A Piece of My Heart” and “Tracers,” to the current touring favorite “Miss…

David Rabe's Cosmologies, expertly produced by the Gift, keeps you guessing
David Rabe has spent a lifetime honing his craft. And it shows in Cosmologies, a remarkably well-written play receiving its midwest premiere at the Gift Theatre (which counts him as an ensemble member). Rabe first made his name in the 1970s writing savage, dark comedies about his experiences in Vietnam (Streamers, The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, and Sticks and Bones, which won him a Tony) and later in the cocaine-addled world of Hollywood in the 1980s (Hurly-Burly).
As in his earlier plays, Rabe spends a lot of stage time in Cosmologies messing with the audience's mind, defying expectations with lots of sudden, unexpected twists and rambling poetic-philosophical discussions. The story begins simply enough, with a pair of earnest, nerdy high school students who decide to flee to Chicago, but it all goes off the rails when the protagonist, an honors student named Eric, is stabbed by a sadistic pimp and experiences what is either a long, two-act hallucination or an abduction by aliens.
The result is a wild, fever dream of a play that keeps the audience guessing, and then, in the end, refuses to wrap things up neatly. This sounds like a mess, but Rabe somehow pulls it off. Or, I should say Rabe and the folks at Gift Theatre, under the direction of Michael Patrick Thornton, pull it off. Because this is the kind of play only an accomplished playwright in full control of his craft and a tight ensemble in full control of their instruments could make work. The production is full of fine performances, as we have come to expect from the Gift, led by Kenny Mihlfried as the Alice-like Eric, struggling to find his way out of Wonderland.   v

Dan Hedaya is a common face from his work in films and on TV, where he typically plays a villain (although he had a good comic turn as the charmingly sleazy Nick Tortelli, Carla’s ex-husband, in “Cheers” (1982) and its quick-lived spin-off “The Tortellis” (1987)). He has way too accomplished considerably phase work, appearing opposite Alien: Resurrection (1997) star Sigourney Weaver in “The Conjuring an Event” at the American Place Theater. Other stage performances contain Broadway roles such as “The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel” and numerous New York Shakespeare Festival productions.
