This is what you Sharpe's Rifles people are reading, right??
This was my light reading last night, and I enjoyed it very much, despite being written for children people of all ages. Foundling George Milton escapes the workhouse where he is cruelly mistreated and becomes a bugler for the 95th Rifle Regiment in 1809, after he is rescued and adopted by a Regimental Sargent Major. Awwww!
Tumblr media
As a piece of historical fiction, it's put together with great care, with a lovely emphasis on the day to day life of a Napoleonic era soldier. The forward by Bernard Cornwall states that Richard Sharpe would approve of George Milton and even seems to hint that Sharpe could make a cameo appearance in a future volume.
But alas, volume 1 was published in 2020, and there are no signs of any sequels? I can't find any information about this series being continued.

HELLO!! YOUR BAIZHU WITH CHRONICALLY ILL READER IS THE BEST THING THAT'S EVERY HAPPENED!!! I've never seen a blog that does only platonic things, and as an aroace person, IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY! I wasn't too sure if you requests were open or not, but I was wondering if you could make either some headcanons or a fic where the reader (from that series) has a flare up or gets sick and Baizhu takes care of them? I'm unfortunately sick right now (just in time for when my final school assignments are due, slay 😍) but found family and hurt/comfort are literally the best thing ever, and, if put together, I'm pretty sure will cure me /j. If you requests aren't open, then please disregard this message!
Anyway, I gotta go sleep before the fever messes up my brain (if it hasn't already); so good bye, and thank you again!!
a slip of the tongue.
summary. how does baizhu care for his junior herbalist when they fall ill?
trigger & content warnings. flu-like sickness, lighthearted mentions of death.
tropes, pairings, fic length, & other notes. hurt/comfort-ish. baizhu & reader. 1.1k words. they/them pronouns for reader. this post is an expansion of invisible disability? it's rather visible to me & contains vaguely implied spoilers for baizhu's story quest.
author's thoughts. hello lovely!!! thank youu <3 i am slowly collecting people that like this series like how i collect shiny rocks. its great to get a request related to it. i hold this series very dearly, so please (and this goes for everyone reading this!) never be shy to send thoughts about it or requests related to it. anyway, i love catering to aroace folk, you all are so special to me. im on the aro spectrum myself, so i get it. i know from experience that it can be super frustrating looking for fanfic content that's non-romantic. please remember to take care of yourself! i totally understand the feeling of needing to finish final assignments while being sick. me and you are in the exact same boat LMAO... my requests are always open btw! ive no intention of ever closing them. in the end, i went with our poor reader being sick rather than having flare ups, since i already briefly touched on that idea in employee benefits.
Tumblr media
how does baizhu care for his junior herbalist when they're sick and out of commission?
baizhu is most often the first to know when they're sick or otherwise unwell. he's so impossibly attentive to their bodily condition, simply because their health is partially his responsibility. he's their teacher. what kind of mentor would neglect to take care of their apprentice? a bad one, that's what kind.
(he also feels somewhat indebted to them—even though they're chronically ill, they're always doing anything they can to help him recover after his "secret art" treatments. even though he's the doctor, they've helped care for him on more than one occasion. he has to return the favor whenever he can. just because he's older doesn't mean he gets to freely take advantage of their kindness.)
if he's not the first to know, he's the second, because the only instance where he wouldn't know first is if they woke up ill at home.
he'll always end up being the second to know, at the very least. someone will inform him of their condition, whether that be a parent or a sibling or another family member. sometimes a friend of theirs may tell him, such as xingqiu, chongyun, hu tao, or xiangling.
in hu tao's case... she may be distrustful of him, but she does tell him when they aren't well. [name] is a childhood friend of hers. she cares about their health and, surprisingly, doesn't want to put them in the ground just yet!
even though she dreads the path they've chosen to walk down... she still cares for them, very much so.
(junior herbalist!reader's lore drop is finally here?!?!?)
regardless of how baizhu finds out, they'll end up being cared for at the pharmacy.
though he could prescribe them medication and let them be taken care of at home...
he often wants to care for them himself.
gui has asked why in the past, and baizhu really has never had a good answer for him.
he's really not sure why he wants to be the one to monitor them. perhaps it's because it gives him a sense of calmness and reassures him that they're recovering well.
after all, if their condition were to rapidly decline for any reason... he could fix it.
(to some others, his concern might seem overprotective. unnecessary. however, something as simple as the flu has been known to take lives. he worries that, because of their chronic illness, they may be more susceptible to a severe case than others are.)
he has the means to save them if something like that were to happen, and undoubtedly, the life of his sweet and kind apprentice is one that deserves to be saved and protected.
perhaps it's also because it seems to put qiqi at ease; baizhu's noticed that she gets fidgety in [name]'s absence during work hours, but when they're ill and being cared for at the pharmacy, she functions very well and often even remembers to check on them herself.
sometimes when they have a fever, qiqi may sit by their side for minutes at a time and just press her little cold hands on their forehead to cool them off. she also ensures that they stay hydrated.
both baizhu and gui find this behavior very endearing. qiqi cares deeply for her big sibling (despite the fact that she's technically older...). her bond with them is something very special and sweet to bear witness to.
bubu pharmacy's work environment is familial and tightly knit by nature, so it isn't too hard to imagine that something would feel wrong if one of the four herbalists were gone for whatever reason. even those who don't work there are affected by the absence of one or more of the pharmacists.
overall, baizhu takes very good care of them when they fall ill.
he monitors them closely, hand-crafts their medicine depending on what they need, makes sure that their fluid intake is maintained...
he dotes on them tbh.
"Ugh..." they groaned, blearily blinking up at their mentor. Baizhu's hand against the feverish skin of their forehead was cold; they couldn't help but lean into the gentle touch. "Bàba?"
He didn't point it out. He hardly even acknowledged their words, as if he were somehow used to it. He only smiled, hand stroking tenderly over their disheveled hair, taming the defiant strands no doubt caused by restless sleep. "So sorry to wake you, dear."
Even Changsheng was quiet—she only hummed thoughtfully from her place around Baizhu's neck. Normally, she'd find something to tease them about (usually because they started it!), but now... she seemed to know that it just wasn't right to tease them in their hazy state of mind.
Gui was quiet, too. He was surprised. He had never heard them address their mentor such an... informal way, let alone with familial terms. He did once briefly think that the dynamic they had with Baizhu was awfully family-like, but...
It was still unexpected.
"Come, now. It's time to take your medicine again, and then you can go back to sleep, okay?"
Gui watched, still silent, as they hummed in absentminded acknowledgement, rubbing their eyes ever so slightly. It didn't seem to help them come to at all; their gaze was still distant and unfocused and they didn't even realize how they addressed the doctor. If they did... they'd probably apologize, embarrassed, but they showed no such emotion. Baizhu gently guided them into a sitting position, rubbing small circles on their back.
Gui handed the cup filled about halfway with herbal medication off to the doctor. Baizhu gingerly guided it to their lips, knowing very well that the guidance was needed; they looked half-asleep sitting up. Archons know they were in no condition to successfully do it themselves. They took the medicine without so much as a whine about its bitterness—they only grimaced slightly after swallowing. Gui supposed that they never really were one to complain about it, even when fully coherent. 'I think it would set a bad example for others if I complained,' they once told him. 'Plus, it's not like Dr. Baizhu gets some kind of sadistic pleasure from giving medication to me, so there's no reason to complain. It's herbal. There's nothing to be done about the taste... I know he doesn't like taking it either. Hehe. It's kind of funny, actually, like we're hiding some kind of company secret. Herbalists who don't like the taste of herbal medicine.'
It was only after he left the room with the doctor that he pointed it out:
"They called you bàba."
"Hm?" Baizhu hummed, turning to Gui. "Oh. Yes... [Name] has done it quite a few times, actually, whether that be because of fever delirium or a slip of the tongue. I don't mind it. It only means that they feel safe enough to be vulnerable here. Qiqi has done it a few times, as well. Those two are only children, so... it is to be expected."
Gui then smiled, nodding. "It's cute."
Baizhu couldn't help but agree, his lips tilting upwards into a little smile himself. "It is."
please consider reblogging, it helps me out quite a lot!

hello cas! how are you?
i just wanted to ask something, i dont know, maybe have a little validation? im not sure
i have and regularly use a tumblr blog, and im an active ao3 author who will often project onto characters, both because its easier to write what i know and also because it makes for good storytelling. theres one thing though that i never talk about, not on my blog and not in my writing, but i feel like i should be?
i dont remember the silly medical word for it, but theres some condition on my dad's side of the family where weve got a higher chance of going blind, and usually earlier in life than most. my aunt has it, my grandfather had it, my older brother has it, and i have it. i didnt know my grandfather bc he died before i was born, but i know it only started affecting my aunt a little into her 50s, though it was much earlier for me and my brother (hes 27 and has about 50% of his vision, and im 20 and have about 70%, and for both of us what we have is also very blurred)
again, its not really something i talk about. ive been learning braille for when the inevitable comes (so far ive learned the alphabet and common conjunctions i can expect, so now im moving onto becoming more comfortable and confident feeling it all out) and honestly im pretty okay about it. its not that ive given up, im just... neutral? i have my peace with it. im working with what ive got or whatever, i dunno
but i feel like i should be... doing something with it? like, sharing my experience or using my writing to create representation. im always reading about people projecting their disabilities onto characters (especially remus, in place of his lycanthropy in muggle aus) like deafness, or epilepsy, or chronic pain, or migraines, but i rarely read about blind characters/sight impaired characters, and i just wonder like... should i be writing that? should i be doing something?
i dont know if this even makes sense haha. i just feel some sort of obligation to talk about it, but especially because i already project onto my characters with my mental health issues etc it almost feels like id also be writing about myself *too* much? it feels like theres no winning
im also sort of nervous that if i *did* bring it up on my blog now, that people might think im just making it up or something because ive never mentioned it before. i also dont know everything about it, and if people asked me something i didnt have an answer to, im afraid of that too. as though just because im losing my vision i should know every single thing there is to know about blindness. its silly and i know that, but it still makes me nervous to talk about it after all this time
Hi! <3
I understand why you feel this way, but please know that you don't owe anyone anything just because you have a disability. You're not obligated to be an activist or educator, in any way, shape, or form. There are plenty of aspects of my life I choose not to talk about and boundaries I draw when it comes to talking about my life on tumblr, and that's okay! Nobody who is part of a group that needs representation has to be the person to create that representation. For example, while I work to create trans representation in my writing, I choose not to address a lot of my childhood trauma. Sure, I could write about having a parent who is an addict, but I choose not to, and that's a choice I'm allowed to make, just as you are!
However, if you DO choose to talk about it and someone accuses you of faking? 1. Ew. Block them. 2. Send them to me. That's horrible and they need to be yelled at.
Naming you validation anon

Five people have developed Legionnaires' disease following possible exposure to contaminated water droplets from a cooling tower in downtown Lincoln, New Hampshire, state health officials say.
The five people developed the disease —  a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria — in June and July, New Hampshire’s Department of Health and Human Services said in a news release Monday.
They “may have been exposed” at a cooling tower located behind the RiverWalk Resort, a hotel in a bustling tourist area in downtown Lincoln, authorities said.
Testing by the DHHS and the state Department of Environmental Services confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria contaminating the cooling tower.
The five individuals didn’t share specific location of exposure but had reported visiting various areas of downtown Lincoln, the DHHS said.
Four of the five people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease were initially hospitalized and later discharged. All five have recovered from their illnesses, state health officials told NBC News Tuesday.
“RiverWalk is partnering with DHHS to address the contamination, with additional test results for the cooling tower expected next week,” the release said.
As the cooling tower is still operating amid remediation, “there may continue to be some risk of exposure to the public, especially for people within a half-mile of the cooling tower’s location,” officials warned, sharing a photo of the radius of potential Legionella exposure. The remediation work includes mechanical cleaning and disinfection of the entire cooling system, and long-term cleaning and water management plans.
RiverWalk Resort told NBC Boston on Monday that remediation work, including a complete sanitation, at the cooling tower was completed after starting Friday morning.
“We have been and will continue to partner with DHHS and DES to ensure the safety and protection of our guests and community,” Vice President Renee Blood said in a statement.
Legionella bacteria exists naturally in bodies of fresh water but can be a threat to people when it grows and spreads in building water systems like cooling towers or water tanks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Most people catch Legionnaires' disease by inhaling the bacteria from water in the form of small water droplets or mist, the CDC said. Infections generally don’t spread from person to person.
While most healthy people exposed to Legionella don’t get sick, those who are older, current or former smokers, those with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions including chronic lung disease and diabetes are at higher risk for developing the disease, state health officials said.
Many exposed to the bacteria develop mild symptoms or none at all. However, it can cause a more serious pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, “which can be fatal if left untreated,” the release said. Symptoms, such as fever, cough and shortness of breath, usually appear two to 14 days after exposure.
Dr. Benjamin Chan, New Hampshire's state epidemiologist, warned: “Anybody who has visited the area near the contaminated cooling tower should monitor themselves for symptoms.”
“People who develop fever or other symptoms of pneumonia within 14 days after spending time in this area should talk to their healthcare provider about testing for Legionella infection,” he said.

Supergirl - Missing for a Decade Part 5
Tumblr media
Trigger Warning: This one-shot includes the topic of abduction and mentions of abuse. These plots are presented. If this triggers you too easily or you just can´t handle those subjects, I urge you NOT to read this work. I am NOT embellishing this topic under any circumstance. Read at your own risk.
Authors Note: Here you have a new chapter ♥ I'm going to edit the older chapters again since I don't like them and they seem a bit inconsistent when I look at this current chapter
ᕚ---ᕘ
"You came to talk to me about your sister and niece before you take them home?" the older gentleman asked, clearing his throat and turning completely to the women who had entered his office. "Yes,"
"I have treated more than hundred kidnapping victims, but none like your sister. Despite her captivity, she is open to other people and hardly scared which fascinates me. She is very strong," The doctor folded the remaining files on his desk and clasped his hands on the table in front of his torso, fingers locked tightly together. "You know, every victim presents a new challenge and it is like reading a map of battered bodies that have been unjustly violated"
Both Alex and Kara interestingly pulled a chair from the corner and listened to the doctor go into more details about your health, the various tests and examinations that they did on you.
"She is chronically underweight, physically atrophied. She has anemia, vitamin D and iron deficiencies, and some skin lesions and inflammation from the lack of natural light." he unbuttons the cuffs of his shirt sleeves and rolled them up. "Y/n Danvers shows signs of severe violence over the last few years. Broken bones that healed incorrectly and scars all over her body"
The grey-haired hesitates with another answer and bows his head down, wanting to give Kara and Alex a moment to digest the information. The office is suddenly quieter than it was at the beginning of the conversation. "What about Gracie?"
The man in front of them started to smile and looked at the two older Danvers with glittering eyes. "Despite the circumstances, your sister did a good job. Grace Danvers is a bright little girl with particularly good language skills despite her young age"
"Any signs of injury? Does she have bruises or healed broken bones?
He shook his head violently and took away all their fears with immediate effect. "No, she is a perfectly healthy girl. No vitamin deficiencies or signs of violence. No evidence of past fractures or other medical conditions. If I did not know better, I would say that her mother endured all of the abuse to protect her daughter"
The Danvers sisters nodded in unison and thanked your doctor for treating you so lavishly. Kara put one foot in front of the other as she left the office and waited for Alex to join in step. Together they walked back to your hospital room while going over the details of the injuries you had sustained in their minds.
ᕚ---ᕘ
A week had passed in which you slowly regained your strength in the hospital, slowly got used to your sisters around you and were able to get closer with them. While you were still adjusting to your new, free life, your little daughter explored everything she could get her hands on; running around the hospital with either Kara or Alex always by her side, having her aunts wrapped around her little finger since day one.
You stood nervously with your back to one of your older siblings, staring longingly out the window while your bony hand rested on the pane of glass. A sinister life stretched out behind it; a life you no longer knew. "I do not know if I am ready yet.." you replied to Kara, who sat on your bed and waited for you to take the first step outside. The first step to freedom and into a new life.
"There will never be a perfect moment, sweetheart. Nobody wants to imagine what you went through, but Alex and I will be by your side and support you. No matter how long it takes"
You nodded, saw her soft smile in the reflection and turned to her. The blonde extended her hand. You walked the last few inches that separated you, grabbed her hand so she could pull you into her arms. "Grace is already at the car with Alex and Maggie, trying out the new Nemo seat we bought for her"
You laughed briefly at the thought of how long and in how many stores the redhead must had been, desperate to find a car seat with your daughters favorite fish on it. She had wished for this one and, at the tender age of four, had already threatened not to sit in anything else but this one.
"We can go as soon as you are ready," softly, she kissed your dry and straggly hair, wrapped her arms tightly around you and savored the closeness she had missed so badly. You too snuggled up to her chest like a cat, took a deep breath of her perfume, which she still wore after all these years and let the moment sink in.
Kara´s heartbeat accelerated in your ears and her grip on you became tighter. A slight tremor emanated her body and her swallowing became stronger and heavier.
The sadness that overcame her was like an old friend who had accompanied her on the journey over the past few years. Not intrusive, but always in the foreground; always aiming to get her attention and cause deep pain where your love and closeness once found its place.
It stroked her hair every time she walked into your old room, whispered softly in her ear as in silent moments, she slid down the wall and broke down crying. Never leaving her side and always staying with her. The crushing feeling of never seeing you again, never hearing your footsteps creaking on the floor and never catching the sound of your voice ever again.
Your disappearance painted her world gray, pouring concrete over the once colorful rainbows of your being. You were the biggest concern between all the others. Your sisters were worn down by this eternal struggle - the circle of cause and effect, crime and punishment, guilt and innocence, victim and perpetrator. She had not stopped fighting this fight, but she wished she could.
And now she could finally feel the sun and see the colors again, the warmth she longed for and the soft melody of your voice that returned. "I have missed you so much," she said carefully, rocking you gently in her arms. Kara did not want to let go of you, she had been longingly waiting for this moment for too long.
"After all these years, have you stopped looking for me?"
"Yes, we did," she whispered into your hair, the pain in her voice clearly audible as salty tears strayed onto them. The blonde rested her trembling chin on the top of your head, gently stroking your shoulder while her other hand nervously played with your fingers. It was not until she composed herself that she pulled away from you just inches to look into your eyes. "We all spread out across National City and knocked on every door. We questioned alleged witnesses. But nobody had seen you or knew where you were."
Tears rolled quietly down your face, which Kara caught with the soft pads of her thumbs. Although you had asked the question yourself, your stomach still cramped completely when receiving the given information. Your family had fought through the struggle of your disappearance and given themselves up in the process. They had long since lost hope.
"I am sorry I caused you such pain," you looked at your hands and waved them around as if seeing them for the first time before closing your eyes for a brief moment. Shortly after, you opened them up again and stared at your sister with blank eyes. Kara´s on the other hand were blood red and swam behind thick glasses.
She quickly fell to the ground and knelt in front of you. Her warm hands were placed on your cheeks, her thumbs inevitably caressing them. "You are not to blame for what happened to you and you are not guilty for surviving it. Sure, we suffered pain because we thought we lost you forever, but you know what outweighs that pain?"
You shook your head and cocked it to the side, her hand now clasped between your shoulder and ear. She smiled at you briefly and pulled you to the front so your face was buried in her shoulder. "You are back and our hearts are whole again. You are so strong, a fighter and fought your way through everything that came your way. You do not have to be sorry. It. is. not. your. fault."

How to Build a Medical App Like MyChart
Building a medical app like MyChart that connects patients, healthcare providers, and medical records seamlessly involves integrating specific features, ensuring data privacy, and enhancing user engagement. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of essential factors in developing a successful medical app.
Tumblr media
1. Core Features for Patient-Cantered Care
When building an app like MyChart, prioritize features that empower patients to manage their healthcare effectively. These include:
Patient Portal Access: Give patients secure access to view their health records, including lab results, doctor’s notes, and prescription details.
Appointment Scheduling and Reminders: Enable users to schedule, reschedule, and receive reminders for their appointments.
Telemedicine Capabilities: Integrate options for virtual visits, allowing patients to consult with healthcare providers via video calls.
Prescription Management: Allow patients to view their prescriptions, request refills, and receive notifications for renewals.
2. Prioritize Data Security and Regulatory Compliance
Handling sensitive medical information means adhering to stringent data security standards. Compliance with regulations like HIPAA in the United States or GDPR in the EU is essential.
Encryption: Use end-to-end encryption for all data transmitted through the app.
User Authentication: Integrate multi-factor authentication (MFA) to ensure only authorized users can access sensitive information.
Regular Security Audits: Perform audits to identify vulnerabilities and ensure the app meets the latest security standards.
3. Focus on Interoperability with Healthcare Systems
A medical app must integrate seamlessly with Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and other healthcare systems for efficient data exchange.
API Integrations: Use standardized APIs to connect with existing EHR systems, enabling the app to fetch and update patient information in real-time.
HL7 and FHIR Standards: Adopting health data exchange standards like HL7 and FHIR ensures compatibility with other healthcare platforms.
4. Design a User-Friendly Interface
A medical app should be easy to navigate, particularly for older adults or those not familiar with technology. Important UI/UX considerations include:

Fluarix Tetra is a quadrivalent flu vaccine that protects against four different strains of the influenza virus, including two strains of influenza A and two strains of influenza B. The vaccine is updated annually to match the circulating strains, which makes it essential to receive it every flu season. Here’s why it is important to get vaccinated each year:
1. Annual flu strain changes
Influenza viruses mutate regularly. Each year, the flu strains circulating in the population can differ from previous years. Fluarix Tetra is reformulated annually to cover the most recent and prevalent flu strains. Getting vaccinated each season ensures that your immune system is primed to fight off the most current strains.
2. Weakened Immunity Over Time
The protection provided by flu vaccines, including Fluarix Tetra, wanes over time, usually within 6 to 12 months. Annual vaccination boosts the immune response and restores protection, especially for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.
3. Broader Protection
Fluarix Tetra covers four strains, providing broader protection compared to trivalent vaccines that cover only three strains. This wider protection is particularly important as different influenza B strains often circulate simultaneously, increasing the risk of infection.
4. Protection Against Severe Complications
For high-risk groups like pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, the flu can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, hospitalization, or even death. The vaccine reduces the severity of symptoms and prevents complications even in cases where it does not completely prevent infection.
5. Community Immunity
Vaccination helps build herd immunity and reduces the overall circulation of the flu virus in the community. This is especially important to protect individuals who cannot receive the vaccine, such as newborns or people with certain medical conditions.
6. Public Health Recommendations
Health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone six months and older. This recommendation highlights the importance of maintaining widespread immunity in the population.
What Makes Fluarix Tetra the Best Choice for Flu Vaccination?
Fluarix Tetra is widely regarded as one of the top choices for flu vaccination, and here are several key reasons why it stands out:
1. Quadrivalent Protection
Broader Coverage: Fluarix Tetra is a quadrivalent vaccine, meaning it protects against four flu virus strains: two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains. This broader protection is especially important because influenza B strains can circulate alongside influenza A, and having both types in the vaccine ensures you’re better shielded from circulating viruses.
2. Updated Formula Every Year
Tailored for the Season: Each year, health authorities like the World Health Organization (WHO) monitor flu trends and select strains that are most likely to circulate in the upcoming season. Fluarix Tetra is updated annually to reflect these recommendations, ensuring it targets the most current strains of the flu virus.
3. Suitable for a Wide Range of Age Groups
Approved for ages 6 months and older: Fluarix Tetra is safe and effective for both children and adults, making it a versatile option for families. Its safety profile has been thoroughly tested across various age groups, and it’s particularly beneficial for protecting vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.
4. Well-tolerated with a Strong Safety Profile
Minimal Side Effects: Fluarix Tetra has a strong safety record, with most side effects being mild and temporary, such as soreness at the injection site or mild fever. This makes it a reliable option for those concerned about adverse reactions.
Thimerosal-Free: The vaccine does not contain thimerosal (a mercury-based preservative), which is reassuring for individuals with concerns about preservatives in vaccines.
5. Proven Efficacy
High Effectiveness: Clinical studies show that Fluarix Tetra provides strong protection against the flu, reducing the risk of illness, complications, hospitalization, and death, especially in high-risk populations like children and seniors. Even if you do get infected after vaccination, the symptoms tend to be milder, reducing the chances of severe illness.
6. Prevents severe complications
Reduces Risk of Flu-Related Complications: The vaccine significantly reduces the chances of developing severe flu-related complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or sinus infections. It is especially beneficial for individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases.
7. Convenient and accessible
Widely Available: Fluarix Tetra is available in many clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies, making it convenient for people to access flu protection during the annual flu season.
Single-Dose Convenience: For many people, a single dose of Fluarix Tetra provides sufficient protection for the entire flu season.
8. Trusted by healthcare providers
Recommended by Global Health Authorities: Leading health organizations, including the CDC and WHO, recommend quadrivalent vaccines like Fluarix Tetra for seasonal flu protection. Its widespread use and endorsement by medical professionals worldwide further solidify its reputation as a top flu vaccine choice.
Fluarix Tetra: The Flu Vaccine That Covers Four Strains in One Shot
Fluarix Tetra is a quadrivalent influenza vaccine that protects against four flu virus strains in a single shot. Here’s why it is an excellent choice for flu protection:
1. Quadrivalent Coverage
Four Strains, One Vaccine: Unlike trivalent flu vaccines that protect against three strains, Fluarix Tetra is designed to cover two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B strains. This broader protection ensures you are covered against the main circulating flu viruses each season.
2. Annual Strain Updates
Tailored for Each Flu Season: Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) monitors flu activity globally to predict which strains will be most prevalent. Fluarix Tetra is reformulated annually based on these recommendations to ensure the vaccine targets the most current and likely-to-spread strains.
3. Wide Age Range
For Children and Adults: Fluarix Tetra is approved for use in people aged six months and older, making it a convenient option for families, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals. Its wide safety margin across different age groups makes it a go-to vaccine for preventing the flu in high-risk populations.
4. Strong Safety Profile
Proven Safety: Fluarix Tetra has been tested in multiple clinical trials and shown to be safe and well-tolerated. Most side effects are mild and temporary, such as soreness at the injection site or a slight fever. This makes it a reliable option for individuals concerned about vaccine side effects.
5. Effective Flu Protection
Reduces Flu Risk: By targeting four strains of the flu virus, Fluarix Tetra significantly reduces the risk of contracting the flu. Even in cases where it does not completely prevent infection, the vaccine helps reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, preventing serious complications like pneumonia.
6. Community Immunity
Herd Protection: When more people get vaccinated, it reduces the overall circulation of flu viruses in the community. This helps protect those who cannot receive the vaccine, such as individuals with certain medical conditions, creating a stronger collective defense against seasonal flu outbreaks.
Fluarix Tetra: How It Protects You from Both A and B Flu Strains
Fluarix Tetra is a quadrivalent flu vaccine that offers protection against both Influenza A and Influenza B strains. Here's how it works to shield you from seasonal flu:
1. Protection Against Two Influenza A Strains
Influenza A virus is known to cause the most severe flu outbreaks. and pandemics.   Fluarix tetra targets two key strains of Influenza A:
H1N1: This strain includes viruses similar to the 2009 pandemic flu and has continued to circulate since then.
H3N2: Known to cause more severe illness, particularly in the elderly, H3N2 is another prominent strain that often dominates flu seasons. By covering both these strains, Fluarix tetra reduces the risk of contracting some of the most aggressive forms of the flu virus.
2. Protection Against Two Influenza B Strains
While Influenza B viruses typically cause milder flu seasons than Influenza A, they can still lead to serious illness, particularly in children. Fluarix tetra includes two Influenza B lineages:
Victoria Lineage: One of the major subtypes of Influenza B, this strain often circulates during flu seasons.
Yamagata Lineage: The second major Influenza B strain, which can co-circulate with the Victoria strain during the flu season. With both of these lineages covered, the vaccine ensures you are fully protected against any strain of Influenza B that might be circulating.
3. How It Works
Stimulating the Immune System: Fluarix tetra contains inactivated (killed) forms of the four flu strains, which cannot cause illness. Once administered, the body recognizes these inactivated virus particles and triggers an immune response by producing antibodies.
Antibodies for Each Strain: The body generates specific antibodies for all four strains (two A and two B). If you are exposed to any of these strains later during the flu season, your immune system is already prepared to fight them off, preventing infection or significantly reducing the severity of symptoms.
4. Why Dual Coverage is Important
Simultaneous Circulation: Both Influenza A and B strains often circulate at the same time during flu season, and having protection against both ensures you are less likely to get infected by either type. In previous years, vaccines that covered only one lineage of Influenza B were insufficient when the other lineage was more prevalent.
Broader, Balanced Protection: Influenza B strains can disproportionately affect children, while Influenza A tends to cause more severe illness in the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Fluarix Tetra provides balanced protection for everyone, from the very young to the elderly.
5. Annual Updates to Match Circulating Strains
Each flu season is different, and the circulating strains of both Influenza A and B can change. Fluarix Tetra is updated annually to target the strains predicted to be the most common and dangerous during the upcoming flu season, giving you the best chance of avoiding illness.
Conclusion
Fluarix tetra protects against the two most common and dangerous strains of both influenza A and influenza B viruses. This broad, quadrivalent coverage ensures that you are protected against a wide range of flu viruses, minimizing your risk of infection and serious complications. By triggering an immune response to all four strains, it prepares your body to fight off the flu before it takes hold.

Traveling in your golden years can be one of the most rewarding experiences, offering opportunities to explore new cultures, revisit cherished destinations, or even reconnect with family abroad. For Indian travelers over 80, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey means securing comprehensive travel insurance tailored to their specific needs. With approximately 11% of India’s population aged 60 and above—over 140 million people—there’s a growing demand for specialized insurance products. The travel insurance market in India is projected to reach ₹16,200 crore by 2025, highlighting the importance of finding the right coverage, especially for older adults who may face unique health challenges.
Key Considerations for Over 80s
Health Conditions: According to a 2020 study by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, about 69% of elderly Indians have at least one chronic condition, such as hypertension or diabetes. It’s essential to find insurance that covers pre-existing conditions, which can significantly impact your policy options and premiums.
Coverage Limits: Policies for seniors often come with higher premiums due to increased health risks. Many insurers provide coverage limits ranging from ₹5 lakhs to ₹1 crore, but it's crucial to assess the adequacy based on your health status and travel plans.
Emergency Medical Assistance: Given that older travelers may require immediate medical attention, look for plans that include 24/7 emergency assistance services. Many policies also offer coverage for medical evacuations, which can cost upwards of ₹5 lakhs, depending on the destination.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption: According to a 2021 survey by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), around 20% of travelers faced cancellations or interruptions. Insurance covering these events can save significant financial loss, typically ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh depending on the trip costs.
Age Limits: Many insurers impose age limits, with most policies available up to 85 years old. However, companies like HDFC ERGO and New India Assurance cater specifically to travelers over 80, offering customized plans that consider age-related risks.
Best Coverage Options
HDFC ERGO: Offers travel insurance for senior citizens up to 85 years. Key features include coverage for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and even repatriation. The plan offers coverage up to ₹1 crore.
Star Health and Allied Insurance: Their Senior Citizens Travel Insurance plan is tailored for those above 60 and includes benefits for pre-existing diseases after a waiting period. The maximum sum insured is ₹10 lakhs.
New India Assurance: Their Overseas Mediclaim Policy for senior citizens covers travelers up to 85 years and includes emergency medical expenses, personal accident coverage, and trip cancellations.
Religare Health Insurance: Offers plans for seniors, focusing on comprehensive medical coverage, with options for trip interruption and lost luggage.
Statistical Overview
Travel Patterns: A 2022 report indicated that approximately 45% of senior citizens prefer international travel, with popular destinations including the USA, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Insurance Penetration: Only 3% of Indians aged 60+ are covered by travel insurance, emphasizing a significant gap in protection for this demographic.
Market Growth: The travel insurance sector in India has grown at a CAGR of 15% over the past five years, driven largely by increased awareness among older travelers regarding the importance of insurance.
Conclusion
For senior citizens in India, travel insurance is not just a precaution; it’s a necessity that can enhance the joy of travel by providing peace of mind. As more over 80s embark on their travel adventures, choosing the right coverage can protect against unforeseen circumstances, ensuring that the focus remains on making memories rather than managing risks. Always compare policies, read the fine print, and consult with experts to find the best fit for your travel needs. With the right travel insurance, the world truly becomes your oyster, no matter your age. For more information and comparisons of travel insurance options, visit Travel Insurance Info.

Asbestos in Construction
Asbestos and the Construction Industry in the UK
Historical Use of Asbestos in UK Construction
Asbestos was widely used in the UK construction industry from the 1950s to the late 1970s, prized for its fire-resistant properties, durability, and insulating capabilities. It found applications in various building materials, including roofing sheets, pipe insulation, floor tiles, and spray coatings for fire protection. The mineral's versatility made it a popular choice for both residential and commercial construction projects. Notable buildings such as schools, hospitals, and government offices incorporated asbestos-containing materials extensively. The peak of asbestos use coincided with the post-war building boom, where its properties aligned perfectly with the rapid construction needs of the time. However, as health concerns began to emerge in the 1970s, its use gradually declined. The UK banned the use of blue and brown asbestos in 1985, with white asbestos finally prohibited in 1999. This historical usage has left a legacy of asbestos-containing materials in many buildings constructed or refurbished before 2000, presenting ongoing challenges for the modern construction industry in terms of identification, management, and safe removal.
Health Risks for UK Construction Workers
UK construction workers face significant health risks from asbestos exposure, particularly those involved in renovation, demolition, or maintenance of older buildings. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that asbestos-related diseases claim approximately 5,000 lives annually in the UK, with a significant portion attributed to the construction sector. The primary health risks include mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen; asbestosis, a chronic lung condition; and lung cancer. These diseases typically have a long latency period, often manifesting 20-50 years after exposure. According to HSE statistics, there were 2,369 mesothelioma deaths in 2019, with many cases linked to historical occupational exposure in construction. Asbestos-related lung cancer is estimated to cause a similar number of deaths. The risk is particularly high for trades such as carpenters, electricians, and plumbers who may inadvertently disturb asbestos-containing materials. Despite improved regulations and awareness, the legacy of past asbestos use continues to pose a threat, with the HSE projecting that asbestos-related deaths will continue at a similar level for the rest of the decade before starting to decline.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 significantly impacted the UK construction industry, setting stringent standards for asbestos management. These regulations, which came into force on 6 April 2012, consolidated and updated previous asbestos legislation. Key provisions include the requirement for non-licensed work to be notified to the relevant enforcing authority, keeping a record of the work done, and ensuring medical examinations for workers. The regulations place a duty on those responsible for maintenance of non-domestic premises to identify and manage asbestos-containing materials. This includes conducting asbestos surveys, maintaining an asbestos register, and implementing an asbestos management plan. For construction work, the regulations mandate that companies must determine if asbestos is present before commencing any project. If found, only licensed contractors can remove high-risk asbestos-containing materials. The regulations also emphasize the importance of training, requiring that anyone liable to disturb asbestos during their work receives the appropriate level of information, instruction, and training. These regulations have led to increased awareness and improved safety practices in the construction industry, although compliance remains an ongoing challenge, particularly for smaller firms.

Middle East Complementary And Alternative Medicine Market To Reach USD 51.40 Billion By 2030
Middle East Complementary And Alternative Medicine Market Growth & Trends
Tumblr media
The Middle East complementary and alternative medicine market size is expected to reach USD 51.40 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 22.77% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) include remedies or treatments that are used instead of or as supplements with conventional allopathic treatments. The various types of complementary and alternative medicines include remedies based on traditional alternative medicine & botanicals, mind-healing techniques, body-healing therapies, external energy, and sensory healing.
The Middle Eastern region and its cultures offer lucrative opportunities to players in the complementary and alternative medicine market, owing to a history of commonly practiced spiritual healing techniques and herbal medicine, such as Unani, for the treatment of several disorders. As a result, traditional practitioners are a vital part of disease management in the region. Traditional alternative medicines and botanicals include naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and traditional Arabic medicine.
Due to the increasing burden of chronic diseases and the rising popularity of alternative medicines, several new healing centers are being launched in this space in the Middle East. For instance, in July 2021, the Lootah Group of Companies, in partnership with Kerala's Santhigiri Group, launched the Santhigiri Holistic Healthcare Centre in Dubai, which offers a range of complementary and alternative medicine varieties such as acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and yoga. Such centers are likely to boost the market over the forecast period.
The Middle East region has witnessed significant social and economic impact due to the coronavirus pandemic. The government authorities in this region are keen on promoting the use of traditional alternatives in COVID-19 treatment, however, it is imperative to cater to the conventional research standards devised for all the other drug candidates. In addition, in the recent past, WHO has also acknowledged and stated that CAM exhibits several benefits, that may assist in the effective, safe, and maximum at-home management of COVID-19 symptoms.
Furthermore, an increase in the geriatric population in the region is expected to boost the market growth in the region. According to WHO, in 2050, 80% of older people (above 60) will be living in low- and middle-income countries. Commonly, older people are increasingly choosing CAM treatments, especially acupuncture, herbal products, bloodletting, medical massage, cauterization, and religious rituals. In addition, certain disease conditions such as back pain, insomnia, Alzheimer’s disease, and colds are associated with the use of complementary and alternative medicine among older people.
On the other hand, key challenges faced by the Middle Eastern population using complementary and alternative medicine, are the lack of well-documented data pertaining to the efficacy of CAM therapeutic interventions, lack of robust support from doctors, physicians, and professionals toward incorporation of CAM in conventional treatment options, and fewer number of CAM training programs. However various conferences are being held in the region on complementary and alternative medicine to overcome the challenges associated to CAM therapies. For instance, CAM therapies 2022 conference organized by Pulsus is scheduled on the fifth and sixth of December in Dubai, UAE. Such platforms in the region are helping to share, promote and encourage advancements in complementary & alternative medicine.

Who is more Susceptible to Antimicrobial Resistance?
Children and Neonates
While anyone can be affected by antimicrobial resistance, we also have to consider who might be most vulnerable to it. According to Dr. Gisela Robles Aguilar by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, children fit in the category of who are more susceptible to antimicrobial resistance because their immune systems are vulnerable, making them more at risk to getting infections. Neonates are also at risk of this since they don't have the capacity to defend themselves against any bacteria. It wouldn't be ideal to prescribe them antibiotics immediately. To protect kids from the antimicrobial resistant- infections, Dr. Aguilar suggests to be aware of infection, prevention control measures, and have access to clean water and sanitation. Although somewhat controversial, Dr. Aguilar also suggests vaccination as a good way to prevent infections, and that there are plenty of vaccines available for young children that would prevent these infections.
Tumblr media
The Elderly
According to the University of Minnesota, new research shows that roughly 40% of deaths caused by antibiotic resistant infections occur in Americans 65 and older.
Vulnerability in the Elderly
Unfortunately, because older adults spend more time in hospitals and long-term care settings and have either deal or have dealt with multiple chronic conditions, they are more likely to be exposed to these pathogens and are at risk of infections. Another thing to consider is over the years, their immune system starts to weaken slowly. David Hyun, director of Pew's antibiotic resistance project, said the aim was to "nail down" just how vulnerable this population is to resistant infections.
"We have seen plenty of examples of infectious diseases where older Americans are shown to be very vulnerable compared to the younger people and the rest of the population, and the COVID-19 pandemic is a very recent, and a very good example of how vulnerable this population is." Hyun told CIDRAP News.

'Eye-opening' Numbers
Hyun and his co-authors discovered that invasive, hospital-onset infections with these pathogens were the most deadly and costly for those 65 and older; attributed 30-day morality ranged from 14.8% for invasive MRSA infections to 26.9%. Attributable costs for treating those infections ranged from $23,301 (MRSA) to 54,494 (CR Acinetobacter)
Invasive hospital infections caused by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae had a 16.2% mortality rate and cost an average of $36,077 to treat. Invasive CRE infections had a 16.7% mortality rate, with an average cost of $45,668. For all six pathogens combined, the aggregate cost for 2017 was an estimated $1.9 billion, with 11,852 deaths and 448,224 inpatient days.
Hyun called the findings "eye-opening." "MRSA may not have the highest risk of death among the pathogens we looked at, but it certainly has the highest numbers," Hyun said. "It's probably because it's pretty prevalent in the community setting as well as the hospital setting."

Human Resources Inadequacy in Healthcare in Africa
Tumblr media
One of the greatest challenges in quality healthcare delivery in Africa is not the lack of
technology but inadequate human resource, especially amongst the medical personnel where
the doctor-nurse, doctor-patient and nurse-patient ratios are below the recommended by
WHO. At the same time, we have a population of unemployed medics in some of our
countries. These statements sound like a paradox considering that many medical people
especially doctors and nurses are always leaving Africa for Europe and the USA for what has
come to be termed as greener pastures. Nurses from Africa are globally known to be very
professional and diligent in their patient care. To this end, employment agencies are always
looking for nurses for foreign lands. This is especially common of Kenyan and South African
nurses.
Contributing to the issue that has been a concern in the ever-expanding industry, Jayesh Saini,
a Kenya based businessman who has invested heavily in healthcare says there are various
factors affect this scenario. He points out that though most are common amongst the
countries, some are more pronounced in some countries than in others. As an example, he
said there are generally few training institutions with limited capacity for the medics and
therefore fewer graduates available for absorption. In the poorer nations, inception into such
institutions is limited due to the cost of the courses, without political will to increase capacity.
Another key factor has been that nations have generally not kept abreast with changing
health patterns that have seen increased demand for the medics.
Attrition rate has been on the increase due to various factors including the search for greener
pastures out of Africa, more and more people leaving the career for more financially
rewarding careers such as administration and management jobs even in health facilities, while
the older generations that took careers like nursing as a vocation are retiring and leaving
vacuums. More and more of the younger generation on the other hand are looking for more
money, more time for themselves and less taxing jobs and nursing is not one of them for
example. Where they would consider medicine, they find time in college too long and many
are not willing to venture into that pathway. The search for more money has left some of
them unemployed because they decline offers available on the basis on salary. Another
unfortunate scenario that has created unemployment is that there are no facilities with
capacity to absorb them due to financial constraints or other considerations such as facility
size. In some instances, available vacancy in such remote or insecure places that individuals
opt out of such opportunities as they regard the hardship allowance nothing compared to the
emotional, mental and relational strain this would have on them.
There is need for incentives, one to discourage medics from living their home countries for
other countries and to go to remote and risky areas. Governments should either build
training facilities or where not possible put in place incentives such as tax exemptions for
private investors to invest in training facilities and more health centers of different levels –
from basic to tertiary care facilities.
Jayesh Saini started Bliss Healthcare in 2012, an outpatient service provider, offering a wide
range of services from routine examinations to managing chronic conditions. With over 50clinics across Kenya, Bliss serves more than 960,000 patients per year and has clients from
all segments including National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), Teachers Service
Commission (TSC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), private insurance companies and direct
walk-in clients.
Jayesh believes that healthcare is not a preserve of the rich or the urban areas only and that
the services should be expanded even into the remotest areas noting that falling ill is not a
choice issue but can and happens to people of all walks of life. Bliss healthcare is in the
forefront, supporting the Government of Kenya’s initiative of Universal Health Coverage
(UHC) through providing affordable quality services across Kenya
