I hate how difficult it is to find quality furniture these days. I especially hate how the gulf in price between "shitty, cheap, particle board nonsense that's a little wobbly and none of the pieces fit together flush because lol what are tolerances?" and "made of actual wood" is hundreds and hundreds of dollars wide. I grew up in a house where nearly all of our furniture was salvaged antiques that my mom refinished or furniture that was family heirloom. Even the stuff my parents bought in the '80s and '90s was of a higher quality. The IKEA kitchen table that my mom is still using? It's made of solid pine, it's held up for close to forty years now. I wish that objects were still made to last for decades, sometimes even well past their practical use cases (e.g. my parents' entertainment console which has limited them to a 24" TV, or my great grandfather's smoking table which, and I cannot stress this enough, is an entire table you'd place in your house that was dedicated to smoking). The bedframe in my room at my parents' place is this gorgeous Art Deco styled maple frame that had been my great grandfather's and it's paired with an equally gorgeous Art Deco dresser. My bedframe and dresser here are cheap pieces of shit. I'm basically waiting until my parents die to have nice furniture again, which is not a happy thought.

swerved at the last minute into impulsive baking experiments, and now I have a batch of chocolate-matcha cookies instead.

Bristol UK - The Victoria Rooms

The Victoria Rooms, also known as the Vic Rooms, houses the University of Bristol's music department in Clifton, Bristol, England, on a prominent site at the junction of Queens Road and Whiteladies Road. The building, originally assembly rooms, was designed by Charles Dyer and was constructed between 1838 and 1842 in Greek revival style, and named in honour of Queen Victoria, who had acceded to the throne in the previous year. An eight column Corinthian portico surmounts the entrance, with a classical relief sculpture designed by Musgrave Watson above. The construction is of dressed stonework, with a slate roof. A bronze statue of Edward VII, was erected in 1912 at the front of the Victoria Rooms, together with a curved pool and several fountains with sculptures in the Art Nouveau style.

The Victoria Rooms contain a 665-seat auditorium, a lecture theatre, recital rooms, rehearsal rooms and a recording studio. Jenny Lind and Charles Dickens performed at the Victoria Rooms. It was also the venue for important dinners and assemblies, including banquets to commemorate the opening of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the quatercentennial anniversary of Cabot's discovery of North America, meetings which led to the establishment of the University College, Bristol, an early congress of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and suffragettes "at-homes". The building was purchased and given to the university in 1920 as a home for the student union and, circa 1924, it spent a brief period as a cinema. Following a fire in 1934, the building was refurbished by the university. It remained as the base of the student union until purpose built facilities were opened in Queens Road in the 1960s. The Victoria Rooms then became an exhibition and conference centre, before housing the music department in 1996. They remain in use in the 21st century for concerts, exhibitions, plays, recitals and lectures.

i love my friends but i swear their house is at least somewhat haunted and while i do not consider myself superstitious or spiritual at all i'm gonna take the general route of "pretend it didnt happen/dont react to the creepy noises until they stop" approach

we finished painting the walls in my room today - well, two of them, the ones that we started yesterday. tomorrow we're going to ikea, and then hopefully we'll finish the one wall in my husband's room, and start the two in my room (they're gonna be a different colour than the first two)
