Hi, reader. Remember that children book series you adored? Here’s how old the characters would be now.

Percy Jackson - turning 31 this August (The Lightening Thief was published in 2005. Percy was twelve.)

Amy and Dan Cahill - 30 and 27 (The 39 Clues wiki page puts Amy as born in 1994 and Dan in 1997.)

Sabrina and Daphne Grimm - 30 and 26 (The Fairytale Dectectives was published in 2005. Sabrina was 11. Daphne was 7. Some disagreement on the fandom wiki for their birth years compared to publication date.)

Artemis Fowl - 38 (The first book was published in 2001. Artemis was 12.)

And the real kicker?

Junie B. Jones would be 37. (The first book was published in 1992. She was 5 in the series.)

artemis fowl is probably like one of my favorite series’ ever I read it around 2020 and was ENTRANCED to the point where I begged my older sister to draw art of it (and she did and she posted it too it’s still up on insta lol) and when she would send me letters she would doodle the characters for me on them for me and i would constantly draw them

anyway this series is coming back to rot in my brain so I had to draw art for it

real talk okay thinking back on it couldn’t have Artemis took out his eye to survive the gate??? Also i know Butler was canonically too distraught by Artemis’ death to come to the funeral but I drew his shoes anyway

ALSOOO the fandom is actually gone like I’m in shock Like there is tops 1-2 people I see on tumblr that actively post Artemis fowl stuff and other apps have AF posts that range from 2-6 years ago maybe I haven’t looked too hard but let’s bring AF back🙏🙏

Stop whitewashing Holly Short

I feel like I have to have this talk somewhere outside my head.

I, a 14 year old teenager of color, have always loved Holly Short.

She was described as powerful, with features like a hooked nose, and a dark skin, that made her beautiful. Things that I have always been insecure about, teased for, insulted for, were what made her beautiful.

The powerful woman, who fought sexism and always did the right thing, IMMEDIATELY became my comfort character.

I started to feel better about myself. Draw portraits with my favourite features in my self exaggerated in them. I loved my own features, because she had them.

And then, after reading the whole series and loving it, came the thirst for content. Content in wich, Holly Short, was always whitwashed.

So many fanart, official comics, covers, the goddamn movie! In all of them, Holly wasn't how i imagined her to be. The fact punches me every time. Her skin, her features, are FLAWS that people just prefer to erase from her character.

I still remember how sad i got when i first was raving to a friend about Holly and she said 2 my face how she thought she would be prettier if she were white.

Whitewashing Holly is basically saying the same thing.

Many may go, "whatever, who gives a shit about her color".

But things like this are what make teenagers, kids, like me back at the time, insecure and hating themselves because of simply simply being born the way they are born.

It's striking that Artemis arguably hurts Holly most cruelly when he considers her a dear friend, rather than at the beginning of the series when he is her captor -- consistently, Artemis is cruelest to those he considers his loved ones, as what is most important is the safety (physical, mental, etc) of these people in his life.
