SDF-Macross ep. 13: Blue Wind

The Macross approaches Earth, but they’ve still got an enemy blockade to get through. Meanwhile, the 3 Zentraedi spies are now loose in the ship, running around in their little smocks... I like to think they’re cut up from socks for full size Zentraedi, tied with maybe... dental floss? Anyway these guys saw enough human TV to know they need different clothes, or ‘uniforms’.

They see the 3 bridge bunnies go into a locker room and come out dressed differently, so they figure they can too. Next comes a delightful scene that I don’t remember being in the english version, where they are trying to pry open peoples’ lockers to steal their clothes.

Where did the crowbars come from?

Their hurdle more or less overcome, they are now free to proceed with their mission!

The color really suits him.

Elsewhere on the ship, the former captives are giving a briefing to the brass on the Zentraedi fleet, including such highlights as: it’s estimated at 4-5 million ships, doesn’t have any civilians or culture other than war, was probably artificially engineered to their current size and can likely do this the other way, and that they fear something called ‘protoculture’ that they think the humans have.

One thingthat  boggles my mind about this scene is that at NO POINT does it occur to any of these supposedly smart individuals that the Zentraedi could use the ability to shrink themselves to send spies into their ship. You know, like they are doing. Right now.

Anyway.

The top guys aren’t convinced that their observations are accurate (my dudes, why would they make this shit up), but Global wants to risk a bluff and push through the enemy line banking on the alien’s fear of ‘protoculture’ to keep them safe. The four are dismissed, and given a promotion and a vacation so that’s cool I guess. Apparently there’s also going to be a party in their honour.

Meanwhile, the spies have reached the city part of the ship, and are dazzled and confused by the bright lights and chaos.

Relatable.

All the activity makes them think it must be an important area of the ship, but something is amiss... What could it be? Ruh-roh...

Despite the fact that they definitely knew this was the case before coming here, they apparently can’t handle seeing it first hand and start flipping their shit, drawing more attention to themselves, which leads to the inevitable ‘hilarious’ 80s oh-noes-a-man-in-a-dress moment, followed by the equally ‘delightful’ man-in-dress-chased-out-of-both-gendered-bathrooms scene.

At the reception for the former captives, Minmay gives them all flowers.

The audience goes crazy as she kisses each of the dudes on the cheek (what, no kiss for Misa??), the 3 Zentraedi guys get spooked all over again, and Minmay starts singing her one song (I guess she isn’t any more creative/prolific in the Japanese).

She does have that effect...

Misa ignores her vacation and comes back to work early, just as the Macross gets ready to make its ship through to Earth. On her own ship, Lap’Lamiz (FINALLY she’s in the episode) decides to just watch what they are doing for now, pretty much exactly as Global predicted.But Khyron (FINALLY he’s in the episode) doesn’t listen to her any better than he did Breetai, and wants to destroy them before they can escape to their home planet. He orders his guys to increase speed and get ready to attack instead. In response, the pilots who aren’t Lil Hikaru & co. get ready to fight, as Global is determined to break through the blockade.The ship transforms in preparation, and the spies are caught outside...

As a side note there’s an unusual amount of colour fuckupery in this episode... like that’s supposed to be Max in this jeep, and the poor Zentraedi here are all over the place...

Anyway, Khyron’s guys advance, and the Macross fires with their main gun. Undaunted, Khyron orders his ships to fire, and the pinpoint barrier is predictably ineffective.It looks like Misa and Global’s strategy may be wrong, but then... 

Azonia, annoyed by Kamujin’s insubordination, orders her own ships to shield the Macross. She calls him up to berate him and tells him that if he doesn’t back off he’ll have to fight her. He does but he’s not happy about it...

Aw, he’s so cute when he’s angry :v

So the SDF Macross makes it into Earth’s orbit, albeit somewhat damaged by Khyron’s attack. They semi crash into the Pacific Ocean, and there was much rejoicing.

Crying in the club so I was playing Kingdom Hearts again and I was getting to the end and I was like I've seen this ending like 300 times I won't cry this time but then I heard the first few notes of Simple and Clean and I was like oh no and then I saw Kairi walking in the cave and I was like Oh No and then I saw her pre-rendered tears fall down her face and I was like OH NO so I guess what I've learned today is Mufasa's death? Pure Feeling Playlist

Okay, so I had someone on twitter express interest in the songs I have for my playlist for Pure Feeling and figured, yeah, I could share it. I don’t have a spotify (I don’t like the interface plus the music selection is way too limited for my taste) and the playlist itself is on Youtube Music. It’s also private because I don’t really want random people seeing it or other people messing with it if I unlocked it, so I’ll just type up all the songs here with links that way y’all can scroll through and listen to what you want.

I understand there’s probably an easier and faster way to do this probably, but hey, with the quarantine I clearly have some extra time on my hands so why not?

Though, couple of warnings:

1. It’s LOOOOOOONG (it’s 300+ songs in total) (don’t worry I’m gonna put this under a cut)

2. Some of the songs aren’t going to make much sense in terms of the AU. This is for two reasons: a) Some of the songs allude to events/characters that haven’t shown up in the story yet (there’s a LOT of songs regarding Mara’s father) and b) some of them are just general songs that I use to get a basis of emotion/vibe when writing particular types of scenes.

3. My music tastes are all over the place (and this doesn’t even include some of the other genres I listen to just because it doesn’t fit this AU lol)

ok i was going 2 make a #moodboard for this but that’s gonna take Hours so lemme just stick this here. this is my star trek squad request, pls feel free to send me messages either here or on discord or w/e works best for u. i’ll talk abt some of the characters i’m looking for and sort of what i’m thinking about in general for this group!

so i am a mess and i apologize for this Being a mess in advance however this is what i got so far: the enterprise, junky little space vehicle that is held together by pure hope probably maybe. the enterprise’s crew is a little robin-hoody. taking what they can, distributing wealth the best they can. trying rly hard not to get arrested and/or murdered which they come across in equal amounts on their adventures. this will be subject to expansion once we find out more things, but yeah!

spock - first officer/right hand person, the calm and cool head in contrast to the passion of their leader. in my head kirk n spock are ladies in a v happy slash complicated lesbian relationship (tho also ot3 w bones would be Excellent) but if u wanna go a different way i am v up to discussing it. serious and stony but also there is a depth of caring there that most people on the enterprise secretly know about and let spock mb fake not having.

bones/leonard mccoy - chief medical officer/almost-doctor just trying their hardest to keep the squad patched up. southern?? maybe?? gal? lad? who knows, that’s up 2 u. but kirk n bones are soulmates in a best friend way (or an ot3 way) and while kirk is frequently worried about Everything, and spock is frequently concerned about the logistics bones is worried about the heart of things. gruff and with a bedside manner that seems like it could use some fixing, bones expresses affection through calling u an idiot to distract you from the hypo they’re injecting u with. reserved for nora

hikaru sulu - lieutenant/navigator, helmsmen, plant enthusiast, etc. again the whole gender debate is totally up to u. sulu is a certified badass, kirk frequently tosses themm the charge of the bridge. has a plant named gertrude that is carnivorous and probably shouldn’t be on the ship but kirk turns a blind eye so long as no one’s fingers go missing. is Amazing at fencing. tactical whiz-person, and eager for adventure.

nyota uhura - lieutenant/ communications whiz, the Voice Of Reason. as always who knows what gender, do what u feel. a true romantic and always looking for the best in people. could kick ur ass and Will if u try them. loves to sing!! as them and they Will. likes to needle spock a lil to try and get that “human side” out. mb romantically interested in scotty? up 2 y’all.

pavel chekov - ensign/helmsman, engineering cutie, security boy, smol baby who just wants to prove themselves and do Good in the world. sometimes can be a little precocious but backs it up w a brilliant mind. mb is p close to spock, fills everyone in on sciency thing when spock’s not around. 

montgomery scott - chief engineer, tactical station/weapons genius, person who keeps this ship running despite kirk’s best efforts. often seen as the comic relief but honestly if ppl could just stop asking them to defy the laws of physics that would be Great for their health. mb some kind of hacking genius too? that way whenever corporations figure out how to make their ships go real fast, scotty can do it bigger and better and for peanuts compared to what they’re selling the upgrades at. 

other characters i could go on for days and mention but if u made it this far who knows: christine chapel, janice rand, saavik, carol marcus, security chief giotto, christopher pike...

things we could do: general shenanigans are always good but also lets consider: general kodos/tarsus iv massacre, gorn fight, hitting up planets to see if they can steal minerals to sell before big companies get a hand on them, THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES, honestly so much more and i am so v passionate about this dumb gang and the places they could go and i am Always open to hearing other ideas so pls... hmu.

SDF Macross Ep. 11: First Contact

We pick up where we left off, with Breetai laying the smack down on the humans.

And it pretty much continues in this vein!

He knocks Kakizaki AND HIS MECH out cold. Max is all :surprised pikachu: because he just blew him into space wtf. While this is happening some Zentraedi scoops Lisa up into a bag. A BAG. Breetai beats the living shit out of Lil’ Hikaru with his BARE HANDS, ultimately impaling the valkyrie on some… idk, coat hooks?

Why don’t you... hang around for a while? :v

Rick ejects to try and escape but Breetai LEAPS into the air and snatches him. Lil’ Hikaru’s mech explodes from the abuse, blowing a hole into the hull (again) and sucking Max out into space (again). Don’t worry though, Breetai is fine.

This is literal... Zentraedi higher ups are actually genetically engineered to be smarter and tougher!

The Zentraedi put the humans in the shame tube. THE SHAME TUBE!!

What’s this? Another thing VLD ‘referenced’? :O

While B&E discuss what they are, the humans wake up and immediately start bickering. Rick says some incredibly fucked up shit to Misa. He blames her for the recon pilot getting killed. And then, these gems!!!

LIKE WHOAH HOLY SHIT RICK. I honestly don’t remember him saying anything this blatantly horrible, although my sister says it wasn’t that different. For some reason instead of giving him the dick punch he so richly deserves, Misa just tells him to watch how he talks to a superior officer and that she can do those things too.

B& E watch them fight and Exedore comments that men and women being together in the same place leads to disaster. No honey, that’s just Rick. Anyway it’s giving Breetai (and me) a headache so they turn off the monitor. They decide that they need to bring the prisoners to the Main Fleet for their head dude to decide what to do.

Meanwhile Max sneaks back into the ship via a hole in the hull before they fold, and back on the Macross, Roy breaks the news to Minmay that Rick is missing; I do not care. He is very tall though.

We learn that time passes differently during a fold… An hour in hyperspace apparently equals like 10 days back on the Macross, and Lil’ Hikaru is missing Minmay’s debut, boo hoo.

As the Zentraedi ship defolds, the humans are dismayed and astonished by the sheer size of the main fleet. They fly into some kind of a giant asteroid base. Meanwhile Max beats up a hapless Zentraedi who was just trying to go to the toilet, and steals his uniform.

Breetai prepares to make his report to Bodolzaa, which will take place on his own ship so the humans don’t contaminate the core with their gross human cooties. Bodolzaa starts interrogating them, which immediately hits a snag when the Zentraedi can’t grasp the concept of ‘civilians’ and ‘before I was in the military’. They also demand to know how men and women can live together, and why they have chosen to become miclones. Misa at first refuses to answer, so Bodolzaa decides a display of force is in order and shows images of the fleet destroying a planet. She judges that they must have something he wants or he would have blown up Earth and the ship already, so she calls his bluff. Get dunked on Baldy.

The power of… friendship? (spoiler alert no, it’s boning)

This does not make Bodolzaa happy. He scoops her up and demands again to know why she became a miclone, threatening to kill her until the guys tell him they were born this way. This leads into the world’s worst sex ed class…

Poor Exedore, his giant brain is breaking.

Oh my God Breetai. At least Misa didn’t break out a powerpoint. Hayao gets as far as explaining that they kiss and “hold each other” before Bodolzaa demands that they (he and Rick) demonstrate. Thank God he didn’t hear what comes next or this would have been a very different anime. Because it’s the 80s Lil’ Hikaru refuses to kiss a dude, so Misa volunteers and orders him to kiss her.

The Zentraedi are FREAKING OUT.

Protoculture is mentioned. Bodolzaa orders the humans taken away. The shame tube is too good for them now and they’re tossed into what appears to be a closet, while the Zentraedi try to figure out what the fuck just happened. The lower ranking scouts don’t even know what Protoculture is, so we’re treated to some exposition! In the ���time of Protoculture” the ancestors of the Zentraedi used to be miclone-sized, and all lived together, and had something called ‘culture;’ but most records of this time have been lost. Now they believe that if anyone comes in contact with protoculture they become unable to fight and will be destroyed… This is srs bsns.

The secret of protoculture is obviously bangin’.

We end with some gratuitous Minmay singing, which is thankfully much less painful than the English version. It’s just sort of bland and generic 80s anime music as opposed to horrible, grating nonsense.

This episode had no Khyron, but loads of Breetai so it still gets a thumbs up from me. I love this big hairy cyclops man. :3

SDF Macross Ep. 10: Blind Game

The three Zentraedi scouts are trying to explain bikinis and how weird they made them feel to B&E. They are fighting again about whether they’re a weapon, some kind of combat suit, etc, leading to Warera (Bron) decking Conda...

After dismissing their agitated spies, B&E discuss how to proceed next. Exedore wants to collect some samples. Breetai for some reason suggests they continue their conversation in his room...  ��

The Macross finally has contact from Earth! Bad news tho, they think that because the ship has been able to not get destroyed so far, maybe the Zentraedi aren’t so scary after all. So the Macross should just wear them down and buy Earth time to get ready. We’re disappointed but not surprised.

Breetai has ordered Kamujin to ‘threaten’ the Macross but not damage it: a warning shot. Kamujin thinks this is dumb and probably Exedore’s idea but whatever.

He has a better plan... Apparently there is an ‘old timer’ aboard their ship who is ‘about to retire’... Wait hold up, Zentraedi get to retire? What does that look like? Is there a pension plan or is it more a boot out the airlock kind of deal?? Anyway wouldn’t it be a shame if this old guy who ca’t shoot for shit ‘accidentally’ actually hit the ship? >:3c Kamujin thinks this will be a much more effective warning.

Who needs peripheral vision when you’re this cute?

Rick gets stood up by Minmei because now she’s busy with singing lessons and crap. Blah blah don’t care...

The Zentraedi perform their threat display and as [Khyron] planned, the old guy blasts the ship and the radar tower is destroyed. Several humans die on screen. The ship is now surrounded by debris and bits of asteroid, rendering their short range scans useless. They try to turn on their long range radar and that’s when they realize what’s happened...

Exedore is pissy about Khyron damaging the Macross but Breetai is all ‘naw it’s cool’ because them having no radar will make their next move easier, which it does. They launch some battlepods, and also send a transmission (in whatever language the Macross peeps are meant to be speaking) demanding their surrender, and telling them the previous attack was only a warning. Global is impressed that they have already deciphered their language, but declines to answer. Instead they will send out a recon vessel to see what’s up.

Lisa, feeling guilty about sending pilots to die against the Zentraedi, decides to do the recon herself, with Rick and his guys providing the escort. This is all according to keikaku for Breetai! They send out some more battlepods, and Lil’ HIkaru and Friends engage. Max is the first to realize it isn’t a real attack; they head back to Lisa in the recon plane but it’s too late. The cat’s eye pilot freaks out when they almost run into the gigantic enemy flagship they somehow hadn’t seen with their own damn eyes, and then they get hit by an asteroid fragment. The pilot is killed, and the Zentraedi scoop up the plane!

Much to Breetai’s annoyance, the veritech squad follow them into his ship. He heads to the hangar to FIGHT THEM HAND TO HAND.

Max manages to grapple him and blast a hole in the hull to drag him outside and leave him there. But my dudes, Breetai is HARD AS FUCK and GIVES NO SHITS ABOUT THE VACUUM OF SPACE. My guy pulls himself along the outside of his ship until he finds an airlock, and comes back in.

Just out for a stroll in -245 C weather, nbd

The humans,  who think they’re soooo clever, are trying to cut their way out again but oh NO HERE’S BREETAI WITH A LEAD FUCKIN PIPE GET DUNKED ON MICRONIANS!

Some Micronians are about to get lead poisoning

This Breetai fight (which continues in the next ep, First Contact) is one of the moments that was indelibly seared into my brain as a kid. You can totally see where (again) Voltron referenced/ripped it off with the Keith/Zarkon battle at the end of season 1!

Anyway this is a Zentraedi-heavy episode, and thus Very Good.

SDF Macross ep. 12: The Big Escape

I keep typing that as the Bog Escape. Which would be a pretty good episode I feel.

Anyway. The captured humans have hatched a brilliant plan to have Rick and Lisa kiss again the next time the Zentraedi show up to feed them or something, and then escape; but now Lisa has her moral dignity pants on and doesn’t want to.

The Zentraedi discuss their strategy for dealing with the micronians. Bodolza wants to send a spy, despite the danger of exposing themselves to Protoculture. The three reconnaissance officers EAGERLY volunteer.

Who indeed... Also, someone needs to get Exedore a booster seat.

As someone opens their cell (closet) door, Lisa agrees to the plan finally and she and Rick smooch. However it was for nothing because it’s Max! To the rescue! He is a lil surprised to find Rick and Misa kissing but whatever. He puts them in his stolen uniform pockets so they can ride around like hamsters.

Keep it classy, Max...

Despite Max’s very convincing disguise, they are soon made and a chase through Breetai’s ship begins. 

How could anyone have seen through this? :o

Max flies his veritech in Guardian mode THROUGH Breetai’s command center. Dolza is not impressed. They manage to ditch their pursuers but the damaged Valkyrie overloads and explodes. Misa and Lil’ Hikaru are separated from Max and Hayao, loose in the ship.Misa and Hikaru stumble across the cloning chamber where the future spies are being Micronized! Although it’s not clear they realize that’s exactly what’s happening.

All of this seems to be the last straw for Bodolzaa.

Breetai is relieved, and Lap’Lamiz (Azonia) will now command the fleet at the front line.

Meanwhile Misa and RIck hypothesize about the Zentraedi: that they used to be small but engineered themselves into giants in order to fight the ‘Supervision Army’ (whatever tf this is? it wasn’t a thing in Robotech so I’m ?? hoping to get a little more information); and ‘Protoculture’ was the civilization they had before, lost in the process. They are almost caught while chatting, and Rick murders the hell out of another guy, shooting him in the head with a dropped weapon. And then shooting him about 20 more times just cause I guess. Rick pries Misa from the dead guy’s grasp and they get away (again). They end up in a cooling tank (?) for the engines and have a lil bonding moment >.> He manages not to say anything too sexist and disgusting the whole time!

Meanwhile the three spies are preparing to ship out with Azonia.

Rico’s name is... LOLI DOSEL??? XD

Misa and Lil’ Hikaru meet back up with Max and Hayao, and they all spot the supplies being moved from Breetai’s ship to Azonia’s, rightly judging that this is the one to hitch a ride home on.

We get our first look at Lap’Lamiz and Milia! 

Helllo Ladies! Milia is not impressed with the idea of sending in spies, it’s too passive. Milia decides she will take the spies on her own because the Miclones are too dumb to pose any threat to her. Which... they don’t :v. She rips her way through their defenses effortlessly, then tears a hole in the side of Macross and it’s done.

Meanwhile the humans have stolen a battlepod and managed to escape the ship, and are finally on their way home.

SDF Macross ep. 15: Global Report

Apparently it’s been a year since the start of the show, and Captain Global is making his report to the Earth brass on all that they’ve learned. I was reaaaallly hoping this wasn’t going to be a clip show like they had in the english version when I saw the title buuuuuuut.... It is. I’m afraid this is going to be a short and boring post, because this episode is basically a half hour of ‘Previously On SDF Macross.’ So. Ya know. Weh.

I miss his corny Russian accent here, and since this is all told from the POV of the Macross crew, the only Zentraedi scenes are from the episode where Lisa & co get captured. Two demerits.Well... 1.5 because they do show Breetai crushing it with the lead pipe at least.

At the end of ye old clip montage Lisa shows up and brings Global a coffee. THAT’S IT THAT’S THE SHOW. Next ep is China Town.

Meanwhile Breetai and Exedore (let’s call them B&E from here on out because that reminds me of Crime) are watching the ads for the pageant trying to figure out wtf. Their signal is crappy so they decide to send a recon craft to get a better one. Code name blue wind!

Apparently the prize for winning Miss Macross is a free plane. Cool I guess. Captain Global is a judge. Claudia says Lisa should have entered; she could have won. Wouldn’t that have been a different show...While they are chatting about this they detect the enemy craft. They try to call up Rick to go investigate, but this dumbass has gone AWOL and apparently stolen a bike to go watch the pageant. Even though he could have watched it on TV from the base. You would think he’d get in Actual Trouble for this but he probably won’t. He’s like Harry frigging Potter that way. Since he’s not answering the phone the Bridge just breaks into the stadium intercom to shame him into coming back to his goddamn JOB.

The Zentraedi, watching the pageant now, are pretty horrified to see men and women interacting. “SHOULD THEY BE DOING THAT??” Historically, probably not, my dudes.

Lil’ Hikaru has finally gotten into his plane, but fakes ‘static’ to tune out of his military comms to watch the pageant instead. He’s so distracted he almost RUNS INTO the Zentraedi recon ship, and barely snaps out of it long enough to shoot down their missiles. 

The Zentraedi scouts, meanwhile, are made confused and horny by the swimsuit contest. Are they combat suits? What is happening??

BTW these are (L-R) Bron, Rico and Konda (not sure their Japanese names yet) and they are some cuties whom we will see again... Since apparently this is the first Zentraedi ship not made of papier maché, they hold out long enough when Lil’ Hikaru comes back to shoot at them to get to the escape pods. They set the ship to self destruct, catching him in the explosion.

Oh and Minmay wins the pageant.

Any episode after Khyron’s introduction that doesn’t include him is sort of a letdown tbh, but the 3 Zentraedi Musketeers are a decent consolation prize... Next Ep is BLIND GAME!
