So we jump forward 2 years... They're trying to rebuild the Earth, but it's going to be tough. The whole surface is blasted and cratered. I'm not seeing any greenery or water anywhere. Looks like a wasteland.

Some Zentradi are having trouble adapting to civilian life. They want to go back to the good old days of unending war. And it looks like Quamzin is trying to get himself some kind of personal army going.

Max and Milia have a baby. I haven't caught the kid's name, but I don't think this is Mylene from Macross 7. It kind of makes me wonder how many kids they have.

Misa is still pining after Hikaru - and it doesn't seem like she's actually confessed her feelings or anything. Hikaru is still pining after Minmay - doesn't seem like he's confessed his feelings either. There's a neat reveal that the picture album we've been seeing in end credits for each episode is Hikaru's.

Minmay and Kaifun are still together... I don't think there's anything romantic there? Kaifun just kind of seems to be her manager or something? But he's turned into a miserable drunk. He's all kinds of resentful about playing small towns and blames the military for absolutely everything.

Too exhausted and busy to write meta or answer Asks right now. Really sorry everyone. Work plus outdoor yard things and house things are devouring me right now. Also, trying to track down the source of the image below:

I’ve seen it referenced in a few places , and it’s supposedly from Animage 1983 Vol...? (月刊アニメージュ 83年(多分)7月か8月号付録)

It’s really bizarre, and I recall something from the Macross 2036 PC Engine Duo game that Kamjin survived his and Laplamiz’s suicide attack on the SDF, and now this is driving me crazy because it’s not in any of my Macross artbooks, and I asked some fans who collect more heavily than I do (that’s not hard to do as Macross isn’t a priority for me) and they’ve never seen it either.

The two places (Japanese Macross fandom wiki and a fan blog) mention that in the original cut of the series, that Kamjin and Laplamiz would have survived. I recently saw something about this art used for an alt-ending novel, but I don’t know if that’s true.

I don’t have energy to explain more than that, but now I’m hunting for Animage magazines from 1983 (presumably the August edition?). When I first saw the art, the text was not with it, so I believe that art must appear in an art book, and the image above is from an advertisement in a magazine.

Maybe I can find the time/energy to try and translate the text in this image.

EDIT/UPDATE: I found the source of this illustration, bought it (old Animage), and translated it and it’s fun. Will post my translation eventually.

SDF Macross Ep. 7: Bye Bye Mars

So we open with the Zentraedi surveying the abandoned Mars base while Breetai and Exedore discuss the reinforcements he’s ordered... Exedore is horrified to learn he has called up Kamujin Kravshera. THAT’S MY BOYYYYY!! Who apparently destroyed a fuckload of their own ships while drunk one time. And also wiped out two divisions of friendlies in another fight (although he also did kill every last enemy; you win some you lose some)... While they are discussing this Kamujin’s ship’s defold, super way too close to Breetai’s, and the noise Exedore makes is HILARIOUS. It turns out that K had a bet going with his second in command as to how many they’d hit, with the winner getting the other’s “booze ration”. So apparently the Zentraedi get liquor rations in this; that’s a thing. Nice.

Apparently Kamujin has been sidelined for 6 ‘taarns,’ whatever those are, for his naughty behaviour. So, way to make a good first impression, you beautiful piece of garbage. Breetai has a plan for him to lay an ambush for the Macross.

Also, in the English version he was called ‘Khyron the Backstabber’ and I’m sorry but ‘Kamujin the Ally-killer’ just doesn’t have quite the same ring. And he had this great affected British accent, that I miss too. 

Blah blah Minmay invites Rick to her birthday party. Who cares. He feels special but later it turns out she invited THE WHOLE GOD DAMN MILITARY or something. 

The Macross receives a signal from Mars Salla base, that’s supposed to be abandoned after it was attacked during the Unification wars (I think?). Misa’s boyfriend (?) Riber was apparently stationed there so she has some Feels. Anyway the Captain decides that they can probably find some supplies and stuff at Salla so they go to check it out. Misa wants to check out the base just in case there are survivors, to which Global agrees. 

Meanwhile Khyron and his troops are hiding out in a ravine. They have planted a bunch of gravity mines underground to trap the battle fortress once it’s in position. It’s actually a pretty good plan and Kamujin manages to be patient and wait for them to move closer but one of his guys jumps the gun and gives away their position a teensy bit too early. The mines are all set though and the Macross can’t get away as Kamujin attacks, oh noes. 

And look how fine Kamujin is looking:

Anyway the Macross crew figure out if they overload the base’s underground reactor they can destroy the mines, so they get Lisa to set that off. While she is on her way out she gets trapped between two emergency bulkheads... Right in front of Riber’s room, what a crazy random happenstance. Wait, Riber? 

Or is it.. 

LIVER??! Ok... Misa gets caught in her feels and won’t leave Riber’s room, forcing Hikaru to have to come and rescue her, which she protests vigorously. Doesn’t anyone in this show enjoy being alive??

The reactor blows, freeing the SDF and destroying most of the remaining Zentraedi fighters. Khyron is equal parts pissed because he hates to lose and intrigued at the prospect of an actual challenge... 

And this is the best-behaved he’ll be for the whole rest of the series! :v

Next episode is: THE LONGEST BIRTHDAY. I guess Minmay’s celebrating on the Sunday of the time change?

SDF Macross Ep. 10: Blind Game

The three Zentraedi scouts are trying to explain bikinis and how weird they made them feel to B&E. They are fighting again about whether they’re a weapon, some kind of combat suit, etc, leading to Warera (Bron) decking Conda...

After dismissing their agitated spies, B&E discuss how to proceed next. Exedore wants to collect some samples. Breetai for some reason suggests they continue their conversation in his room...  ��

The Macross finally has contact from Earth! Bad news tho, they think that because the ship has been able to not get destroyed so far, maybe the Zentraedi aren’t so scary after all. So the Macross should just wear them down and buy Earth time to get ready. We’re disappointed but not surprised.

Breetai has ordered Kamujin to ‘threaten’ the Macross but not damage it: a warning shot. Kamujin thinks this is dumb and probably Exedore’s idea but whatever.

He has a better plan... Apparently there is an ‘old timer’ aboard their ship who is ‘about to retire’... Wait hold up, Zentraedi get to retire? What does that look like? Is there a pension plan or is it more a boot out the airlock kind of deal?? Anyway wouldn’t it be a shame if this old guy who ca’t shoot for shit ‘accidentally’ actually hit the ship? >:3c Kamujin thinks this will be a much more effective warning.

Who needs peripheral vision when you’re this cute?

Rick gets stood up by Minmei because now she’s busy with singing lessons and crap. Blah blah don’t care...

The Zentraedi perform their threat display and as [Khyron] planned, the old guy blasts the ship and the radar tower is destroyed. Several humans die on screen. The ship is now surrounded by debris and bits of asteroid, rendering their short range scans useless. They try to turn on their long range radar and that’s when they realize what’s happened...

Exedore is pissy about Khyron damaging the Macross but Breetai is all ‘naw it’s cool’ because them having no radar will make their next move easier, which it does. They launch some battlepods, and also send a transmission (in whatever language the Macross peeps are meant to be speaking) demanding their surrender, and telling them the previous attack was only a warning. Global is impressed that they have already deciphered their language, but declines to answer. Instead they will send out a recon vessel to see what’s up.

Lisa, feeling guilty about sending pilots to die against the Zentraedi, decides to do the recon herself, with Rick and his guys providing the escort. This is all according to keikaku for Breetai! They send out some more battlepods, and Lil’ HIkaru and Friends engage. Max is the first to realize it isn’t a real attack; they head back to Lisa in the recon plane but it’s too late. The cat’s eye pilot freaks out when they almost run into the gigantic enemy flagship they somehow hadn’t seen with their own damn eyes, and then they get hit by an asteroid fragment. The pilot is killed, and the Zentraedi scoop up the plane!

Much to Breetai’s annoyance, the veritech squad follow them into his ship. He heads to the hangar to FIGHT THEM HAND TO HAND.

Max manages to grapple him and blast a hole in the hull to drag him outside and leave him there. But my dudes, Breetai is HARD AS FUCK and GIVES NO SHITS ABOUT THE VACUUM OF SPACE. My guy pulls himself along the outside of his ship until he finds an airlock, and comes back in.

Just out for a stroll in -245 C weather, nbd

The humans,  who think they’re soooo clever, are trying to cut their way out again but oh NO HERE’S BREETAI WITH A LEAD FUCKIN PIPE GET DUNKED ON MICRONIANS!

This Breetai fight (which continues in the next ep, First Contact) is one of the moments that was indelibly seared into my brain as a kid. You can totally see where (again) Voltron referenced/ripped it off with the Keith/Zarkon battle at the end of season 1!

Anyway this is a Zentraedi-heavy episode, and thus Very Good.

SDF Macross Ep. 8: The Longest Birthday

Any scene with Minmay feels like the longest anything so

We open with Breetai and Exedore contemplating the humans’ progress toward their planet, wondering if they have let them get too close. But nah, it’s just going to be eveb more awesome when they defeat them within sight of their home, so it’s all good. The only thing Breetai is worried about is... Kamujin!? Like dude YOU hired him. And he was being good last episode. I mean, he isn’t going to be now but that’s beside the point :v.

Yeah he is totally planning to pretend to do a training flight and instead attack the Battle fortress. This will become a pattern, lol.

Yeah he will. Also, seeing the Zentraedi use slang like this amuses me a great deal :3c

So Rick is getting a medal and promoted, I can only imagine because they are running out of guys. Roy puts him in charge of Hayao something and Maximillian Jenius (subtle foreshadowing, so subtle). Rick has to get to Minmay’s party and ends up dragging them along, although Hayao would apparently prefer to go to a strip club... Lisa realizes standards aren’t what they used to be when she hears about Rick’s promotion.

Anyway Minmay is salty that Rick didn’t bring her a present. She starts flirting with Max, who, to be fair, is cuter and less of a dolt. Hilariously the mayor is at this party and WILL NOT stop calling Rick ‘Lil’ Hikaru.’ xD

On the bridge Lisa realizes her radar is being jammed just as Khyron sends his first guys to draw out the defenders.

Such drama. I stan. :3

So the guys get called into action and Minmay is a brat about them having to leave, predictably.

Kamujin’s ‘decoy’ force draws off the main valkyries, and then his main force attacks. Macross is getting its butt kicked although Max is doing great. Almost like he’s... some kind of... geinus... Hayao sucks at everything but being loud. There is a pretty sweet standoff between Kamujin and Lil’ Hikaru where they each cut the hands off each other’s mechs.

Breetai is watching and complaining about ‘typical Kamujin.’ Again, YOU HIRED HIM. He decides that even though Kamujin is WINNING, he can’t let him just do whatever he wants (this will again be a pattern...) and orders them recalled, threatening to send Kamujin ‘back to where they came from’ if he does not retreat. I remember that in the English version this was not an order/threat but like a remote override that recalled Khyron’s ships against his his will. EIther way Kamujin is pissed.

After the battle Rick goes over to Minmay’s. He still doesn’t have a present so he gives her his medal. She can’t tell one shiny object from another so she loves it. Mission accomplished I guess. He is so happy he runs all the way home. Oh and apparently it’s now been 8 months since the Macross left, which I geuss does make Rick’s promotion slightly more believable. I guess.

Next episode is MISS MACROSS!

This is so damn valid. I hadn’t even read all the way down saltwife’s post till my nostalgia for Breetai beating a Veritech/Valkyrie in hand-to-hand combat took over and I thought: “Has anyone else done that? Giant alien leader from a warrior race vs a giant transforming robot in space? ... Oh. Zarkon vs Red Lion.”

Anyway, this is one of my fave Macross episodes because Breetai vs a mecha in space is in my top ten mecha fights and now I’m thinking about Breetai vs a xenomorph because why not?
