The Adventure of the Speckled Band (1949)

Насколько я прочитал, эта 26-минутная экранизация “Пестрой ленты” первоначально должна была быть пилотом самостоятельного сериала про Шерлока Холмса, но в итоге ее показали в составе сериала-антологии Your Show Time. Поэтому в начале, середине и в конце здесь есть курящий и довольно раздражающий рассказчик, у которого совершенно не подходящий голос для рассказы��ания историй. Сама экранизация тоже получилась довольно вольной - например, здесь присутствует жених Элен Стоунер, которого им в какой-то момент даже пришлось оглушить и связать, чтобы устроить ночное бдение в ее комнате. Да и в диалогах здесь регулярно отходят от канона. Холмса здесь играет некий Алан Напье... Забавно, вот ты играешь великого сыщика в конце сороковых, а в шестидесятых ты уже дворецкий Бэтмена. А в восьмидесятых ты умираешь и в твою память называют одного зеленоволосого клоуна, и эта фамилия потом просачивается в канон, оставившись там навсегда. В общем, из Напье получился относительно сносный Холмс, хоть и строит странные рожицы, когда типа улыбается. Во всяком случае, он не раздражает, это уже кое-что. А вот его Уотсон это совсем другая песня, как и в случае с Найджелом Брюсом это скорее “разрядка смехом”, чем полноценный напарник. Здесь он то пытается согнуть кочергу а ля Ройлот после его ухода, то шумит, когда нужно сохранять тишину, то отбивается от бабуина... Больше всего меня, как ни странно, разочаровал Ройлотт - получился он какой-то дохленький, нестрашный и даже не верится, что он был способен согнуть эту кочергу. Не скажу, что он ее вообще как-то сильно уж согнул... Холмсу-то там даже выпрямлять ничего особо и не пришлось. Сцену появления змеи в спальне полностью слили, едва там что-то зашебуршало в вентиляции, Холмс сразу начал стучать тростью - то ли по стене, то ли по отверстию. А когда они пришли в комнату Ройлотта и обнаружили его труп, Холмс еще и в змею несколько раз выстрелил (хотя в каноне осторожно перенес ее при помощи плети обратно в сейф). Интересно, что должна была подумать мисс Стоунер, когда сначала услышала крик, потом выстрелы, а потом обнаружила труп отчима и стоящих над ним Холмса с Уотсоном? Как по мне, что Холмс решил дело радикально и пристрелил Ройлотта. Он так и сказал, что это было “лучшее решение проблемы, мисс Стоунер”. Потом Холмс и Уотсон препоручили мисс Стоунер ее освободившемуся жениху, а на Уотсона опять прыгнул бабуин. На вопрос, почему бабуин к нему ластится, Холмс ответил, что это, мол, любовь. Что вообще происходит?..

Paul Edwin Roth - a versatile character actor and Germany’s Dr. Watson

Paul Edwin Roth was born into a family of doctors in Hamburg on October 22, 1918 and grew up in the Hanseatic city. After graduating from high school at the "Johanneum" in Hamburg, he actually had other career plans and wanted to become a doctor like his father. Only at the urging of his mother did he attend the drama school of the "Deutsches Schauspielhaus" from 1937 until 1939. Roth made his stage debut in 1939 at the "Stadttheater Heilbronn" as Gustave de Grignon in the comedy "What the Ladies Like" by Eugène Scribes, followed by engagements in Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden.

At the end of the Second World War he was  severely wounded and probarbly traumatised by his horrible experiences he was released as a prisoner of war from the Russians.

In 1948 Roth played the leading part of Beckman in the stage play "Draußen vor der Tür" ("The Man Outside") by Wolfgang Borchert at the “Hebbel Theater” in Berlin. It was a huge success and Roth was regarded as one of Germanys most important character actors since then.

His other outstanding stage roles in the late 1940s included his interpretation of Moritz Stiefel in the drama "Frühlings Erwachen" ("Spring Awakening") by Frank Wedekind as well as the title role in Friedrich Schiller's play "Don Carlos".

Paul Edwin Roth gave his film debut in 1947 in “Und über uns der Himmel” (“And above as the Sky”) in which he played the former soldier Werner Richter, who lost his eyesight during the war but regaines it later. In 1949 he played in “Unser täglich Brot” (“Our Daily Bread”) the young blackmarketeer Harry Webers who commits suicide in the end. In his film carreer which spanned more than forty years he mostly played distinctive supporting roles.

Paul Edwin Roth's main field of activity had become television since the late 1950s. He made numerous television movies and appeared in many telesvision series. His role as lawyer Patterson in the second season of the television series “Gestatten mein Name ist Cox” (“May I introduce myself - my name is Cox”) (1965) was a big success. It was probably his excellent teamwork with the leading actor Günter Pfitzmann (Roth was some kind of his sidekick) that resulted in his most famous role two years later.

In 1967/68 the first West German TV channel ARD broadcast the only German television series about Sherlock Holmes. The series consists of six episodes originally written by BBC authors based on stories by Arthur Conan Doyle: “Das Gefleckte Band” (“The Speckled Band”), “Sechsmal Napoleon” (“The Six Napoleons”), “ Die Liga der Rothaarigen” (“The Red-Headed League”), “Die Bruce-Partington-Pläne” (“The Bruce-Partington Plans”), “Das Beryll-Diadem “ (“The Beryl Coronet”) and “Das Haus bei den Blutbuchen “ (“The Adventure of the Copper Beeches”) Strangely the credits don’t mention Sherlock Holmes but only Arthur Conan Doyle.

Erich Schellow (1915 - 1995) played the master dectective while Paul Edwin Roth  portrayed Dr. John H. Watson. They had a great chemistry (Schellow called his fellow actor Roth - whose two first names Paul and Edwin were drawn together as “Pled” as a nickname - “a clever guy”) and played the relationship between Holmes and Watson as warm but also as very ironic. The fact that the two of them are using the informal “you” (“Du” in German instead of “Sie”) particularly illustrates their loving relationship.

Erich Schellow plays Sherlock Holmes in an aristocratic manner with great dignity and much esprit. The actor wanted to add a touch of depravity to his portrayal (including the use of cocaine) but director Paul May disapproved of it and insisted on an irreproachable Sherlock Holmes.

Paul Edwin Roth (the mustache is false by the way) plays Dr. Watson not as a buffon like Nigel Bruce did but nevertheless he often provides funny moments. Watson’s constant use of his umbrella as a vessel for alcoholic beverages is the  running gag of the series. Altough he is a physician he does not appose at the least against intensive use of tobacco and alcohol. He is a very clever man who is proud of remembering every single name and address that is ever given to him. He is also a brave man who doesn’t hesitate to use his army revolver and in “Das Beryll Diadem” he even knocks down the criminal with a stick. Even if he doesn't know what’s going on he remains cool and makes some witty remarks. The dry sense of humour is an outstanding characteristic of the series.

Inexplicably, the series was not a great success. It was only repeated once in 1991. Luckily this gem was released on DVD in 2012 and re-released in 2021.

In addition to his extensive work for film and television, Paul Edwin Roth was also a renowned voice actor. Inter alia he regularly dubbed Montgomery Clift and Michel Bouquet but also Dirk Bogarde in "Accident" and Alan Bates in "Zorba the Greek" and Jason Robards in "By Love Possessed".

Paul Edwin Roth succumbed to cancer on October 27, 1985 in his home town Hamburg - a few days after his 67th birthday.

Ele-May-ntary - Number 29

Welcome to Ele-May-ntary! All throughout the month, I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, from movies, television, radio, and even a couple of video games! Last time, I discussed Alfred Pennyworth – I mean, Alan Napier, and his one stint as Holmes in the 1949 version of “The Adventure of the Speckled Band.” That was a very obscure version, but today, we’ll be covering a somewhat more well-known portrayal. Number 29 is…Ian Richardson.

Richardson is what I would consider a cult classic Holmes. I say this because, when I see documentaries about different takes on Holmes as a character throughout the years, Richardson is an actor I don’t think I’ve ever seen mentioned. Despite this, the Shakepsearean-trained Richardson gives a portrayal that seems fairly popular among Conan Doyle fans. He first played Holmes in a television film adaptation of “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” which came out in November of 1983. The following month, a sequel came out, also based on a Conan Doyle Novel: “The Sign of Four.” There were plans to make more movies, but due to copyright issues, they were never produced. Later on, Richardson would play the real man who inspired Sherlock Holmes – Dr. Joseph Bell – in the crime series “Murder Rooms,” which told the story of how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle came up with his classic adventures. The late Richardson is and was a fine actor; one of the greatest of his day, with a mellifluous voice and a commanding screen/stage presence. It should also be noted that he is one of the actors who most closely resembles the Holmes drawn by Sidney Paget in the original illustrations for the Conan Doyle classics. His casting was excellent, but for some reason, I’ve never been able to enjoy his Holmes the way so many other people do. Which is not to say he’s a bad Holmes, I should add: Richardson has a sort of ironic, disconnected sort of sensibility in his take on the Master Detective. He’s not as directly discourteous as other Holmes portrayals tend to be, it’s more that he never seems to realize his many oddities ARE oddities: he treats everything he does with a sort of casual flippancy, not seeming to understand why people find him strange. He takes nearly everything in his stride, and goes out of his way to try and save his enemies, even if they by no means deserve it. In a way, he’s one of the most outright heroic takes on Sherlock you can find, without straying too far from the necessary elements of the literary source. Having said that…I’ve just never cared THAT much for Richardson in either of his Holmes outings. Honestly, I found him much, MUCH more interesting in “Murder Rooms,” perhaps because of the fact he’s not TECHNICALLY Sherlock Holmes there, and his take on Dr. Bell is indeed very strong. I think part of the problem with Richardson’s Holmes is a lack of a consistent, strong Watson: in the first film, Watson was played by Donald Churchill. In the second, he’s played by David Healy. Neither of them are bad actors, per say, but I just can’t stand their Watsons: they once again play the character of the good doctor in the vein of Nigel Bruce, but without the gravity or charm Bruce had. Richardson, in turn, feels like a kinder version of Rathbone, but without the proper chemistry required between himself and his partner(s). I don’t hate either movie – “Hound,” in particular, is mostly pretty good – but I’m just not in the crowd that adores Richardson’s Holmes all that much. But don’t be too disappointed: other highly popular Sherlocks will prove more successful on this list. Wait and see. ;) The countdown continues tomorrow! Who will be next? Check in and find out!

Elementary

“My name is Sherlock Holmes.  It is my business to know what other people do not know.” (“The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle”)

You’d be hard pressed to find a more famous detective (any literary character, for that matter) more famous and known throughout the world than Sherlock Holmes.  Since the character’s introduction in A Study in Scarlet in 1887, his adventures have been reprinted around the globe; he has starred in films and television shows (indeed, at the time of this writing, there are two different shows that cast Holmes in the modern world and a third installment of a blockbuster film franchise starring the detective is in the works).  But the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his legendary consulting detective enjoyed a long life on radio and was a fixture during the World War II era as he simultaneously entertained audiences on the big screen.

And his patron saint on the airwaves was an actress, singer, and writer named Edith Meiser.  Meiser had grown up reading the Conan Doyle stories, and she believed Sherlock Holmes’ adventures were a natural for radio.  She worked tirelessly to bring the stories to radio, and she succeeded in 1930 when her adaptation of “The Speckled Band” premiered on NBC on October 20.  William Gillette, who wrote and starred in a stage adaptation of Holmes, played Holmes in that first broadcast.  The series, which starred Richard Gordon, Louis Hector, and eventually Richard Gordon again, ran on NBC until 1936.  Through these different actors and series, Meiser remained a consistent hand at the wheel

Holmes returned to the air following the success of the 1939 film version of The Hound of the Baskervilles.  NBC commissioned a new series to be written by Mesier and to star the actors from the film - Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Watson.  This series, The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, premiered on NBC on October 2, 1939.  It ran until March 1, 1942, when it moved to the Mutual Network.  Most of the episodes were original adventures “suggested by” incidents in the original Conan Doyle stories.  When Meiser left the series in 1944, scripts were provided initially by Leslie Charteris (creator of “The Saint”) and Dennis Green.  When Charteris left to focus on bringing his own creation to radio, Anthony Boucher stepped in and co-wrote the series with Green.

Rathbone, concerned about typecasting, left the role in 1946 after the final film in their series was released.  Nigel Bruce had no such concerns, and he stayed on in the part as producers brought in a new Holmes - actor Tom Conway.  As the veteran of the cast, Bruce received top billing for the 1946 - 1947 series, sponsored by Kremel Hair Tonic.  The Conway/Bruce series lasted 39 episodes before both actors left at the end of the season.  Rathbone’s departure coincided with Meiser’s return; many of her earlier scripts were re-used for Tom Conway and Nigel Bruce.

The show came back for the 1947 - 1948 season with new actors at the microphones.  Alfred Shirley assumed the narration/sidekick duties as Dr. Watson, and John Stanley took over as Sherlock Holmes.  When some listeners heard Stanley in the role, they suspected one of Holmes’ famous disguises might be in use.  As Edith Meiser recalled, “Everyone thought that Basil Rathbone, who had said he would have nothing more to do with Sherlock Holmes, was now moonlighting as ‘John Stanley.’”  Stanley, she said, “was a darling who sounded exactly like Basil Rathbone.”  To this writer’s ears, Stanley outdoes his predecessors and emerges as the definitive radio Holmes.  His performances are far more polished than Rathbone’s, and Stanley is unencumbered by any of the baggage (such as frustration with the role) that Rathbone brought with him to the program.  Stanley was also admired by Holmes fans; he wrote a monograph on the pistols used by Holmes and Watson that appeared in the July 1948 issue of Black Maskmagazine.  And both he and Alfred Shirley were given wonderful lines by Edith Meiser.

Unfortunately, this season of Sherlock Holmes proved to be Meiser’s last.  She was fired for, as she put it, refusing to put more violence into her scripts.  “The producers were always telling me to make Mr. Holmes more hardboiled,” she’d recall years later.  The show continued on without her, with a decidedly more modern feel to Holmes than what had come earlier, before leaving the airwaves in 1950.  John Stanley left the role in 1949 and he was followed by Ben Wright (later to star as an intrepid Scotland Yard inspector on Pursuit) before the airwaves in 1950.

Holmes and Watson continued their radio adventures across the pond after they wrapped up on American radio.  John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson starred in an excellent series of Conan Doyle adaptations in 1955.  Co-produced by ABC, the series featured Orson Welles as Professor Moriarty in an adaptation of “The Final Problem.”  And of course, the character is still going strong on television (Sherlock and Elementary, which recast the sleuth in the modern world, draw millions of viewers) and in films (Robert Downey Jr.’s re-imagined take on the character has become a box office smash franchise).  But few of the writers who have adapted the character since his creation have been able to match Conan Doyle’s style in the way Edith Meiser pulled it off.  Thanks in no small part to her work, the Sherlock Holmes radio adventures are a must-listen for Sherlockians and fans of radio drama alike.

Ele-May-ntary - Number 30

Welcome to Ele-May-ntary! All throughout this month, I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, from movies, television, and even a couple of video games! Last time, we talked about the Fourth Doctor’s adventures as the Master Detective. Today, we see an equally familiar face to the world of geekdom. Number 30 is…Alan Napier.

Proof that Alfred taught Batman everything he knows.

Yes, for those who are unaware, Alan Napier is an actor most famous for playing Alfred Pennyworth in the 1960s “Batman” series, starring Adam West & Burt Ward as the Caped Crusader and Robin the Boy Wonder, respectively. In my opinion, Napier is the definitive live-action Alfred. Yes, other actors of more recent times have been quite good – Michael Gough, Michael Caine, Jeremy Irons, and more – but in many ways, I feel the 60s Alfred was something of a bridge over the gap between the Alfred of the time before then, and the Alfred we know today. In the early days of comics, you see, Alfred was a comic relief character: not even remotely the parental and often militant figure we know today. It was the 60s show that made Alfred just as much of a hero as Bruce Wayne could be, actively taking part in crimefighting and actually having experience as a soldier. He was the perfect blend of the man of action and the sophisticated servant. Having said that, long before he started serving tea and crumpets at Wayne Manor, Napier was a distinguished actor onscreen, and had been involved in theatre for several decades. In 1949 – more than 15 years before he became Alfred – Napier was cast in the role of the Great Detective in a TV production of Conan Doyle’s own personal favorite Holmes story, “The Adventure of the Speckled Band.” It aired as an episode of the series “Your Show Time,” and co-starred Melville Cooper as Dr. Watson. The episode adapts the classic story rather faithfully, in terms of characters and plot; the only great change is the addition of a second suspect: in the original story, the culprit is fairly obvious, and the real question is how he plans to deal with his victim. In the 1949 version, a red herring is added to the mix, so – for those who don’t know how the original story goes – the mystery becomes more cloudy. Melville Cooper is by no means my favorite Watson; the episode was made right on the heels of the popular Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce films and radio series, and Cooper’s bumbling, comical Watson is clearly an attempt to capture the spirit of Bruce’s take on the character, but without the charm and balance that Bruce had. Napier, however, is a highly respectable portrayal of Holmes. Rather than attempt to mimic Rathbone, he brings his own take to the role: a sly, sharp gentleman with a wit as keen as his eyes and/or brain. Honestly, it would have been lovely to see more stories adapted with Napier’s Holmes, or even get a proper film treatment with him in the role (the “Your Show Time” episode is only about a half hour’s length, and has a VERY small budget to deal with), but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. What more can I say? If we ever needed further proof that Alfred is arguably more awesome than Batman, this is where you can find it. Tomorrow the countdown continues! Who will be next? Впереди еще столько неоткрытых Холмсов и Уотсонов! В скобочках, кстати, указаны исполнители главной роли (или актеры озвучания). Звездочкой отмечены самые приглянувшиеся мне Холмсы (но это не всегда означает, что сам фильм такого же качества). Не все фильмы тут просмотрены в хронологическом порядке. Пост будет обновляться.
