Durandal was the mythical sword of Roland, a legendary paladin (knight) and nephew of King Charlemagne.
The magical qualities of the sword have been vividly described in the 11th-century epic poem "La Chanson de Roland" (The Song of Roland). The poem is the oldest surviving major work of French literature.
According to "The Song of Roland", Durandal was first given to Charlemagne by an angel and was supposedly the sharpest sword in all existence. At the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 AD, Roland used it to hold off the Saracen army long enough for King Charlemagne's army to retreat into France.
There are many legends about the sword of Roland. A local legend from the 12th-century monks in the medieval town of Rocamadour claimed when Roland was mortally wounded, he threw the sword into the air and it magically landed embedded in the rock cliff in Rocamadour.
A sword can be found wedged into the cliffs above the Notre Dame chapel in Rocamadour until recently - however the local Tourist Office calls it a replica. This replica of Durandal has been reported missing on 22nd of June 2024.
love having weird old books, hate having to google which translation of a strange, ye-olde epic is the best one. what do you mean i can’t just pick up any copy of the epic of gilgamesh. what do you mean not all of them are good. why isn’t it good. what happened to it.
I just finished Equal Rites!! 🥳 and the cinder block that is The Count of Monte Cristo. While I do have books queued up to finish next (Red Side Story & Don Quixote are first), I find my 2024 book list running short... What should I add to it?
feel free to make yr case as to yr choice if u wish, or to state support for multiple! I am nothing if not suggestible...
Wait, I'm stupid. Is Roland and Olivier from Vanitas no Carte supposed to be referencing Roland and Oliver?? The classic French friend duo who died tragically trying to win a battle that was rigged against them? Who were loyal to the other to the point of death despite Oliver being the literal braincell in the friendship and warning against Roland's pride? Who were almost brothers but couldn't be ala them dying before Roland could marry into the fam via Oliver's sister?
Man what even was Roncevaux Pass like for Olivier. The guy begs Roland to call for reinforcement like, three times. Did some part of him hope, somewhere, that Roland was right, that he had it handled, that surely he was overreacting? Or did he know all along that this would be his grave? What does it feel like to go into battle knowing you are doomed- and knowing your dearest friend is to blame?
A lot of songs suck, Song of Roland is one of those songs. Without a doubt, this song is a flop, and no matter how someone defends their claim, I will not change my mind about it. Now you may be asking, "Why does this song suck so much, and why do you feel the need to write about it?" Well, my dear reader, I will gladly tell you. First off, the song makes it seem as though Roland is the greatest of the great, at least in chivalrous terms, but he definitely isn't. In reality, he is surprisingly dumb and selfish. Roland put his friend and all the other people who chose to go into battle with him at risk. He may have wanted to seem glorious, but in the end, he just seemed like a huge jerk. He should have simply gone by himself instead of putting others at risk, especially his best friend. Putting other people at risk because you feel you’re so high and mighty is one thing that makes anyone who does such a thing a bad person. In short, Roland is a horrible role model, and the song and Roland himself suck. End of story.
I apologize for the obnoxious watermark, 😒🙄 this is a modern art image of Frankish knight, Roland fighting the Saracens at Roncevaux Pass. Artist unknown.
