We're like three days out from it at this point, but Nellie got read to filth by the party bard's tarot cards in the last session, which she would have handwaved away as Generic Esoteric Bullshit of the kind that the bard is known for doing, except that the bard then asked to see the locket that Nellie has been wearing since childhood - the UNOPENABLE LOCKET, which she has had people who are stronger/smarter/more magically inclined try to open, all without success - and IT OPENED??? FOR THE BARD?? AND HAD HER FAMILY NAME ETCHED INSIDE??

The bard was totally unphased by this even though she too had no idea why one of her mother's trinkets ended up in the hand of this weirdo gnome, which infuriated Nellie to the point that she basically didn't sleep all night.

So now Nellie's convinced the bard's mom is the secret to helping her Figure Stuff Out and she has all but assigned herself to the bard as her guide/bodyguard for the foreseeable future, all without being asked, and I've been spinning them both at high speeds in my brain because holy SHIT. This DM was not playing when it came to making us give a shit about each other's backstories!!!

Wyn

1. What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?

I couldn't tell you for sure! I just woke up one morning and the concept of a noble grave cleric that had tried and failed to resurrect someone dear to them - who then became a champion of the dead and the dying as a monument to that failure - would not leave me alone.

I think I was aware that I wanted to play one partially because I had seen Caduceus Clay of Critical Role fame in action and thought the playstyle of a grave cleric rocked - and there were DEFINITELY influences from The Locked Tomb and the Gentleman Bastards death god of Aza Guilla - but at the time, it felt like it kind of came out of nowhere.

And then I stumbled across the adopt that would eventually become her design, and it fit PERFECTLY with the aesthetic I had in mind, and within the week I had Wyn. :>

5. How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?

Here's a fun fact about me: I can't name a character something that does not invite the chance for a shorter nickname. So when I came up with Wyn's name, it was mostly because I thought the name "Elowyn" was elegant and noble-sounding, and it meant that I could shorten it to Wyn. SIMPLE VIBES.

I did just look it up though, and apparently the name Elowyn is in reference to elm trees, and Wyn does have a crazy connection to the big creepy black tree in Barovia, SO. MAYBE IT WAS ON PURPOSE, ACTUALLY.

13. Do you have a voice claim for the character? What do you imagine the character sounds like?

19. What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?

My favorite thing about Wyn is that I find her very easy to play. She's got a sadness about her that I feel like I can really connect with, but she's not so dour that she doesn't like a good bit when one comes along. I find it very easy to ride the line between her introspective tragedy and her wry, mischievous humor, because I think it touches my two extremes in a way that I find really harmonizing. Wyn feels like the sort of person that can be both of the things that I want to be, and she marries them in a way that doesn't feel jarring.

My least favorite thing about her is that her recent experiences have made her incredibly conflict-avoidant, and sometimes I wish she would just say, "Actually, fuck you!" and Inflict Wounds the damn thing!

Nellie

1. What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?

I can't say exactly what it is because my fellow players follow me, but I will say one thing: it has to do with a particular spell, and the VERY loose rules around said spell. I wanted to push those rules to an extreme and see exactly how someone would cope with the fallout of that.

Also, I wanted a gnome!

5. How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?

Another vibes-based name. I always like to give my gnomes names that they will shorten or nickname-over, and I thought "Patronella" had exactly the level of kind-of-awful that I wanted for a gnomish woman who I knew was going to insist on a nickname early in life. "Nellie" also provides a sense of girlishness that imparts the exactly right level of "definitely went to boarding school" that I wanted for her. Callowmire was just the first thing I came up with after I realized that her original last name (Tritchet) had gotten stolen for my FFXIV character. WHOOPS.

13. Do you have a voice claim for the character? What do you imagine the character sounds like?

If you bring Nicola Coughlan's voice down like...A LITTLE in octave, that's very close. Nellie's voice is still higher than mine usually because I play her a little more nasal overall, but she's still got a bit more alto in her than, say, Fizz. Which is a LOW bar, obviously, but it's worth mentioning since I have a tendency to put Gnome Voices in the same place in my mouth LMAO.

19. What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?

I looooooove that Nellie is so competent! I love that she's got this self-assuredness that doesn't fall down into overconfidence. She's willing to admit that she's not good at some things, but the things that she IS good at receive her full and complete conviction that she'll get it right. Even Val, my high-level paladin who has put down every nasty creature that has ever been put in front of her and who has yet to find a problem that she can't wrench her way out of, doesn't think of herself as capable of anything special. Nellie knows what she can handle and she HANDLES IT, and I love having a character like that. ESPECIALLY considering backstory stuff!

My least favorite thing is that I have to be so goddamn cagey about her backstory stuff because SHE'S cagey about her backstory stuff. I am SUFFERING.
