Does Paleo Have To Be Low Carb?
While carbs from Paleo-friendly vegetable and fruit sources as well as nuts and seeds add interest to our diets, taste great, and provide fiber and valuable micronutrients, we should only eat enough to support our individual needs and goals. Why? Because excess carbohydrates result in metabolic disturbances that create inflammation, fat accumulation, and associated diseases.
So how much is enough? The Paleo diet is referred to as low carb but is it really? Is eating just enough carbohydrates to support our needs and goals automatically low carb? Is carb quality important? And what does “low carb” mean anyway?
What Is a Low Carb Diet?
While there isn’t an official definition, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the World Health Organization (WHO) define a low carb diet as <130 grams/day. The research community breaks dietary carbohydrate levels down further to prevent ambiguity in the literature and agrees on the following four standards: (1)
Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD): 20-50 grams/day or <10 percent carb/day.
Low Carbohydrate Diet (LCD): <130 grams/day or 26 percent total calories.
Moderate Carbohydrate Diet (MCD): 26 to 45 percent total calories. The upper level of this standard (43 percent) is based on the average carbohydrate intake of Americans prior to the obesity epidemic.
High Carbohydrate Diet (HCD): >45 percent total calories. The standard American diet (SAD) currently recommends a carbohydrate intake of 45 to 65 percent.
Is the Paleo Diet Low Carb?
Where does the Paleo diet fit into all this? Research shows that when possible, hunter-gatherers consumed 45 to 65 percent of their energy not as carbohydrate (the current recommendation) but as animal food.
In a study of 229 hunter-gatherer populations, findings showed that 73 percent derived between 56 to 65 percent of their intake from animal foods, and only 14 percent of these societies derived this much from gathered plant foods. Most of the populations studied had a carbohydrate intake in the range of 22 to 40 percent. (2)
If we base our definition of Paleo nutrition on the majority of contemporary hunter-gatherer intakes, and take into account the carbohydrate standards above, it can be said that the Paleo diet is a relatively low carbohydrate diet compared to the high carbohydrate SAD diet.
But Paleo doesn’t have to be low carb! The beauty of the Paleo diet is that you can tailor it to your specific needs and make it work for you. However, many people benefit from reining in their carbs.
The Benefits of Low Carb Diets
Although traditional approaches to diseases of civilization such as heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome have involved low fat interventions, the lackluster results and reliance on drug therapy have driven interest in low carb approaches.
The research on low carb diets involves different versions. Some are low carb, and some are very low carb, while some are short term and others are longer term. However, across the carb spectrum and in both the short and long term, low carb diets are beneficial for health. (3,4,5,6)
Low carb diets have been shown to:
Improve glycemic control and diabetes
Result in the reduction or discontinuation of diabetes medication
Reduce circulating insulin
Be effective for weight loss
Decrease heart disease risk factors
Improve features of metabolic syndrome
Reduce markers of inflammation
Reverse heartburn (GERD)
Improve fertility in overweight and obese women with PCOS
Show benefits independent of weight loss
In addition to the benefits above, very low carb ketogenic diets have therapeutic value for a number of conditions: (7)
Epilepsy
Parkinson’s
Acne
Autism
Bipolar symptoms
Dementia/Alzheimer’s
PCOS
Certain cancers
The Research for a Relatively Low Carb Paleo Diet
As a consequence of excluding grains, legumes, dairy, and sugar-laden processed food, Paleo is relatively low carb by default. The research comparing the Paleo diet to other mainstream diets bears this out and reveals the benefits.
In one recent study, thirty nine healthy women were randomized to either the Paleo diet comprised of lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, fruit, vegetables, olive oil, and coconut oil, or the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE) comprised of whole grains, fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and reduced quantities of high-sugar products and refined grains. A comparison dietary patterns, and an examination of metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors, revealed that the Paleo group had lower intakes of carbohydrate, and higher intakes of fat and over the four weeks of the study, the Paleo diet resulted in more weight loss and decreased waist circumference compared to the AGHE. (8)
In another randomized study thirteen patients with type 2 diabetes consumed a standard diabetes diet (whole grains, vegetables, fruits, berries, and lower total fat) and a Paleo diet (lean meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, root vegetables, eggs, and nuts) while spending three months in each diet period. Compared to the diabetic diet, the Paleo diet was lower in total carbohydrate, even though it was higher in fruits and vegetables, and resulted in improved glycemic control, higher HDL, and lower risk factors for heart disease including triglycerides, diastolic blood pressure, weight, BMI, and waist circumference. (9)
The researchers in this study tested the theory that a Paleo diet would induce weight loss and improve hyperlipidemic parameters: plasma total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides, in adults to a greater extent than a traditional American Heart Association diet. After four months on each diet, only the Paleo dieters significantly lowered total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides and increased HDL, independent of changes in body weight. (10)
And finally, a meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials revealed that when compared to diets based on distinct but similar national food guidelines, the Paleo diet showed greater short-term improvements in metabolic syndrome components including waist circumference, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar. (11)
Can Low Carb Diets Hurt?
Low carb diets are not recommended for everyone and very low carb ketogenic diets have been shown to have some inherent health risks. (12,13,14,15,16,17,18)
People who meet the following might feel better or require higher levels of carbohydrate consumption:
Women who are pregnant
Women who are breastfeeding
Women with fertility issues and or amenorrhea (delayed or absent menstruation)
Athletes interested in maximizing high intensity performance
Those suffering from hypothyroidism
Those with symptoms of adrenal fatigue
Can High Carb Diets Have Benefits?
There are many traditional societies known for their good health and high carb intakes. The Kitavans, traditional Okinawa, and Tukisenta all thrive on diets that we would consider very high carbohydrate, between 70 and 95 percent!
Other populations known for their low fat, high carb intakes include the Tarahumara Indians, the pre-industrialized Thai, the traditional Hawaiian, the traditional Taiwanese, the African Bantu, and the traditional Pima.
Furthermore, very low fat diets where total fat intake is less than 10 percent of calories, such as the Pritikin Diet, are therapeutic for some people. (19,20,21,22,23)
How Many Carbs Do You Need?
It’s up to you to personalize your diet depending on your current state of health, your unique physiology, and your goals. If you’re not sure of where to start, take a look at Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint Carbohydrate Curve.
The Carbohydrate Curve provides a guide for how much carbohydrate is generally needed to counter the ill effects of metabolic dysfunction and facilitate better health and weight management. Although individual needs will differ, Sisson’s carbohydrate ranges predict the following impacts on the human body:
0-50 grams/day: induces ketosis and accelerated fat burning.
50-100 grams/day: Sisson calls this the “sweet spot for effortless weight loss.”
100-150 grams/day: for weight maintenance.
150-300 grams/day: promotes steady weight gain.
>300 grams/day: unless your energy expenditure is extreme, this is the danger zone where there is a high risk for weight gain and metabolic derangements including inflammation that leads to chronic disease.
Carbohydrate Quality is Important
Whether you eat a high carb or a low carb diet, carb quality is key to health. What are high quality carb sources? Starchy and non-starchy vegetables and fruits.
In addition to containing fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, these whole foods are “cellular” because they retain intact cell walls. Contrary to this, the majority of the carb sources in Western diets such as refined grains, sugar, and processed foods lack not only the nutrients but the structural integrity of whole veggies and fruits as well. Refined carbohydrates are “acellular.”
Acellular carbs have a much greater carbohydrate density than cellular carbs and it’s hypothesized that we are not adapted to the effects these carbs have on our gut microbiota as it is only very recent in our history that humans have largely abandoned whole food carbohydrate for processed types. Acellular carbs are thought to cause gut bacteria imbalance, leaky gut, systemic inflammation, weight gain, and obesity. (24)
Recipes Rich in High-Quality Carbs
The Paleo diet is all about eating high-quality food that drives individual genetic expression towards health and away from disease. Although generally lower carb than standard diets, the Paleo template supports any carb range from very low ketogenic to high.

Casino Features and Bonuses
Casino offers a wide range of bonuses, bonus codes and packages, covering different types of games and also bonus targeting specific times and periods. Also all bonuses are subject to the rules of the casino. Certain wager requirements must be met by any player using these bonus packages to make withdrawals of earnings. Casino offers a welcome package of $400 and when such players reload their accounts, they are entitled to a bonus of about $100 or 100 Euro, as the case may be. A welcome bonus, which is 100% of the first deposit of up to $400, must meet the wagering requirement of 40x within 30 days. Comparing this wager and time requirement to most other online casinos, you will see that it is quite fair.
There are also bonus packages for the loyal players of Casino, so each time you play points are earned, these points are accumulated over time and can be exchanged for cash. The number of points accumulated set users into different category ranging from Bronze, Silver, Gold and VIP Elite. The VIP Elite status requires a player to have 20,000 points and a deposit of over $3000 and the status can only be obtained by an invitation. The VIP status on Casino comes with its merits: a personal account manager, bigger bonuses and larger deposit and withdrawal limits, birthday gifts and invitations to exclusive events. The VIP status is maintained for life.
There are also special promotions usually given to the players on Casino, and some of them include getting 25% of every deposit above $50 each for 7 Tuesdays following month after the first deposit. However, the requirement for these offers differs from the welcome bonus and here you need to meet up the requirement in a week and also note that these cash values are not withdrawable.
Players are also rewarded with a ticket to pay a random real money prize draw for every $50 deposited at any time in the second month of membership. If a user enters a certain code (FIRST1), Casino will match the amount in your account 100% to your current membership status. When a user reloads from 9-11 of a month and enters the code MID-MONTH, he/she gets a 25% reload bonus. Furthermore, when you refer someone and they complete the signup process and meet up all requirements to get their welcome bonus, you get a $50 bonus reward. Members are always advised to check and read the terms and conditions for every bonus package so they do not end up using a wrong offer or making any claims.
Casino Payment and Withdrawal Methods
Casino tries to make banking on the site very easy and simple by providing various options. Users can deposit and withdraw funds using Neteller, ClickandBuy, EcoPayz, Laser, Maestro, MasterCard, PayPal and WebMoney. Usually, it is best to use e-wallets, as they happen to be the fastest way to deposit and receive funds. Casino has a 48 hour on hold cash out policy. 3-4 days happen to be the fastest time a user can receive a payment, if they opt for e-wallet during cash out request. Also, note that Casino takes its security seriously, so be aware that a proof of identity will be requested before the first withdrawal will be processed. Live Casino
The thrill of playing at a live casino is usually a different feeling and most online users prefer this adrenalin rush. Latest Research on Best Cooking Oils
By Dr. Mercola
You may have wondered about many of the recommendations you see regarding cooking oils, such as what types are healthiest and how they should and should not be used. There's peanut oil, safflower oil, coconut, avocado, grapeseed and olive oils, and plenty more. So which one's best?
It's probably fair to say that most recipes today calling for some type of oil for cooking usually suggest "vegetable" oil or canola oil. But a recent study1 in Australia found that vegetable oils, which are extracted from seeds, are at the bottom of the barrel, so to speak, because of how they behave in two areas:
Instability when heated
The production of harmful compounds when heated
Here's how the study was carried out: 10 of Australia's most popular cooking oils were heated in different ways, then returned to room temperature before being stored for later chemical analyzation. The oils tested were:
Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
Virgin olive oil
Olive oil
Sunflower oil
Peanut oil
Coconut oil
Avocado oil
Grapeseed oil
Rice bran oil
Canola oil
The researchers made interesting observations of the oils, especially in light of other studies that have taken place in recent years. In fact, some of the results were surprising and contradictory to other studies. One finding was that EVOO was rated the best cooking oil for both oxidative stability and lack of harmful compounds produced when heated.
But coconut oil, deemed to be the next safest for cooking at high temperatures, failed when levels of naturally occurring antioxidants were compared. Smoke point, by the way, is the temperature at which it exceeds safety by releasing free radicals that react with oxygen to form harmful compounds that can harm your cells and even your DNA, according to the Health Science Academy.2
Avocado oil didn't rate as high as one might expect, given other studies. The Healthy Home Economist notes that avocado oil has a higher smoke point of 480 degrees Fahrenheit (F) for unrefined and 520 degrees Fahrenheit when refined. In fact, "No other oil ranks higher including ghee, tallow and lard, making avocado an excellent choice for high heat cooking and frying."3
However, the featured study found smoke point was actually not useful in gauging a cooking oil's suitability for heating and, in fact, those with the highest smoke points tended to produce higher levels of harmful compounds after heating. Keep in mind, too, that one reason the oil you cook with is important was noted in a study in Taiwan, which found "epidemiologic observations in which women exposed to the emitted fumes of cooking oils are at increased risk of contracting lung cancer."4
Interesting Conclusions From Australian Study
Each of the top 10 oils used Down Under underwent two types of testing in scientifically accredited laboratories in Australia to determine the oxidative stability of the oils:
The first gradually heated 8.5 ounces (250 millimeters (ml)) of each oil from 77 degrees F to 464 degrees F, with samples of each being collected at different levels of heat.
In the second trial, 3 liters (100 ounces) of each oil were heated in a deep fryer for six hours at 356 degrees F.
When oils are heated, the rate at which they react with oxygen increases and the oil breaks down, a process known as oxidation. As one study explained, the longer an oil resists oxidation, the healthier it is to eat the food the oil has been heated with.5
However, according to the researchers involved in the featured study, contrary to conventional wisdom, a cooking oil's smoke point is a "very poor marker" of its safety and stability. Typically, the more saturated fat and monounsaturated fat in an oil, the better its oxidative stability. In fact, according to Diet v.s. disease:
"Data from this study showed that coconut oil had the highest oxidative stability. This is due to its extremely high saturated fat content (about 92 percent), which makes it solid at room temperature …"6
Additionally:
"If a high smoke point did accurately represent an oil's stability at high heat, the seed oils would produce the lowest levels of polar compounds after cooking, not the highest."7
Peanut oil came in second on the oxidative stability scale, with extra-virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil and olive oil filling the next three slots. Canola oil came in just ahead of avocado oil, with rice bran (allegedly an industrial fat used for cooking at Chipotle8), grapeseed and sunflower oils coming in dead last.
Polar Compounds and Antioxidant Levels of Cooking Oils
Scientists observed the production rate of harmful polar compounds such as lipid peroxides and aldehydes, produced when an oil breaks down in the heating process.9 Both are linked to serious diseases, including neurodegenerative, age-related, carcinogenic and hypertension-associated illnesses.
In the end, the study concluded that EVOO won the most-stable-oil-when-heated competition, followed closely by coconut oil, and EVOO came out on top in terms of harmful polar compounds produced. EVOO had the lowest amount of harmful polar compounds after heating, followed closely by coconut oil. However, the study authors mentioned that:
"The experiments were carried out without food being cooked. While cooking, the water and steam which comes from the food being cooked aids the process of hydrolysis. The absence of food in these trials may have allowed for a greater impact of oil oxidation when compared with other deterioration reactions."10
Scientists also reported a big difference between virgin and extra virgin olive oils: All three grades contained many more antioxidants compared with the other oils, with EVOO being highest and having 18 times more than canola oil and 700 times more than coconut oil. EVOO, compared to virgin olive oil and the refined version, differs widely.
It's a far superior choice and contains many more positive attributes due to the way it's extracted and produced. Diet v.s. disease contends that "The antioxidant content of extra-virgin olive oil was overwhelmingly greater than all the seed oils, avocado oil and coconut oil combined."11 However, keep in mind that coconut oil does have other beneficial qualities, like being a good source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs).
Olive Oil: A Bona Fide Superfood
Olive oil has been used for several applications for thousands of years, including purification and ceremonial rites and symbolic references such as purity and abundance. Olive oil was a popular trade commodity that, when prepared and cooled properly, could be stored for years, according to early Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.
Olive oil has been used for lamp oil and topically to soothe dry skin. It's still drizzled on raw vegetables, i.e., salads, and breads with cheese and herbs, such as bruschetta. However, using it for frying was not customary among early cultures. Faye Levy, author of "1,000 Jewish Recipes" states:
"The French chefs I studied with in Paris preferred delicate olive oil and reserved it mainly as a 'finishing' oil for drizzling over cooked dishes at the last minute … If you have a really good olive oil, it's best to use it in a dish where the oil's taste is noticeable, such as a dip or salad …
Even a modest amount of a fruity, somewhat pungent olive oil will provide plenty of flavor. Because the flavor of extra-virgin olive oil is finest when the oil is heated gently or not at all, it's a good idea to reserve your best bottles of olive oil for adding to dishes at the last moment."12
Unfortunately, producing extra-virgin olive oil has become a big business, which has led to fraud the world over. Even olive oils labeled "extra virgin" may have been tampered with and adulterated by being diluted with inferior oils, such as some of the seed oils previously mentioned. Taste and smell are two of the best ways to determine authenticity.
Why Olive Oil Is So Good for You
Olive Central, a "portal for the South African olive industry," observes that extra-virgin olive oil has a number of health benefits and lists five main reasons why it's a bona fide superfood:
Oleocanthal — This phenolic compound has reportedly shown several ways in which it reduces diseases affecting joints, neurodegeneration and certain cancers. It may inhibit the COX1 and COX2 enzymes that cause inflammation and prevent Alzheimer's disease by helping clear beta-amyloid plaques from your brain.13
Antioxidants — These can help prevent cell damage caused by oxidants, protect your body from damage caused by free radicals that can cause serious diseases, including cancer, and reduce your risk of heart disease.
Monounsaturated fatty acids — These fatty acids are "good" fats found to protect against disease by increasing your cell membranes' elasticity, which reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and colon cancer, and may benefit insulin levels.14
Vitamin K — A fat-soluble vitamin recognized for its role in blood clotting, this vitamin helps build strong bones and may help prevent heart disease. One tablespoon of EVOO contains about 10 percent of the reference daily intake (RDI) recommended for adults.
Vitamin E — Vitamin E, aka tocopherol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in protecting against skin and eye problems, cancer and diabetes, as well as neurological diseases like Alzheimer's. Often included in skin creams, it helps promote healing and reduces scarring.15
Cooking Oil: What to Use, What to Avoid
When it comes to cooking foods with oil, one of the things to watch for is oils that are hydrogenated or interesterified (a fat where the triglyceride molecule is engineered to change the melting point of the oil). One thing untested in the Australian study was something Americans use often: organic, grass fed butter, which is among the best fats to cook with. Ghee, another delicious alternative, has been used for cooking for eons and is another good choice.
Perhaps the information unmasking margarine as an artery-clogging substitute is old news, but just in case, avoid margarine along with refined cooking oils and vegetable oil, and avoid vegetable shortening, as well. Polyunsaturated fats may be the worst, as the omega-6 fatty acids are more prone to damage — one reason to stay away from corn oils, soybean oil, safflower, cottonseed oil and canola oils, too.
Coconut oil has much more going for it than the Australian study revealed. Fifty percent of its fat content is lauric acid, which your body converts into monolaurin, which contains powerful antiviral, antibacterial and antiparasitical properties.
Multiple studies point to coconut oil and avocado oil as far superior to olive oil for heating food due to the smoke point, but some of the most prominent entities people turn to for information regarding their health have not yet gotten the memo regarding healthy fats; some may in fact be ignoring the newest studies.16
It's worth mentioning, too, that the Australian study was carried out by researchers with Modern Olives Laboratory Services, which provides services for the olive oil industry. While there's no doubt that olive oil is good for your health, its suitability as a cooking oil deserves further study.

SEO is by far the most talked about, searched for and read about topic for web entrepreneurs. And so it should be, considering how vital it is to get SEO right for your business!
What’s puzzling, however, is that there are so many myths and misconceptions about SEO floating about. I mean, we all want to get SEO right, so why do these myths live on, acquiring the status of urban legend?
Some of them are hilarious, but some can really hurt you. They can keep you from improving your search traffic and website rankings, and hinder your best content marketing efforts.
Personally, I would hate to spend weeks perfecting one aspect of SEO only to realize a month later that it’s not even considered important by Google (and I’m sure you would, too!)
So I thought I’d write this post to debunk some of the most common SEO myths I’ve come across, and explain why you need to stop believing them today.
1. SEO is a scam
The myth: Fast-talking SEO consultants charge astronomical fees to provide services without any explanations that do almost nothing and may even penalize your website.
The reality: Sigh. SEO is not a scam. Check out Moz’s organic search improvement over SEO efforts of three years.
Sadly this myth probably came into existence because there are many dodgy SEO companies out there that make a profit spamming sites with your links, leading to a quick increase in rankings that rapidly drops when the sites linking to your site are deemed to be spammers by Google.
However just because there are unethical SEO companies that promise you top rankings in Google then leave you high and dry, that doesn’t mean SEO isn’t legit or ‘real’.
For decent companies making sincere efforts to increase website traffic for their clients and improve user experience, SEO is a continuous effort that helps them beat competitors and gain from high SERPs.
This myth is probably rooted in the false idea that SEO involves quick and easy wins with little effort.
It doesn’t. It’s a continual investment, but it’s worth it. Just stop making silly SEO mistakes and keep the quality work up.
2. Reacting quickly to algorithm updates makes you more successful
The myth: Every time Google updates its organic search ranking algorithm, you need to make changes to your site as soon as possible to stay ahead!
The reality: Every search engine out there is continuously working to improve its search algorithms – Google alters its search algorithm approximately 500 times a year. The only updates you need to worry about are the major algorithm updates.
When these happen, the smart thing to do is wait and see if your site has been impacted. More often than not, if you are doing SEO right, your site won’t have been impacted negatively anyway, and you could even see a boost!
There’s no such thing as the perfect search algorithm, so updates will always be around. Try to wait to react, read credible sources about what the update involves, and give yourself a couple of days or even weeks to make adjustments if necessary.
If it’s an update that the search engine will stick to, you will soon hear about best practices for adjustments from the company itself anyway.
I visit this site on a semi-regular basis to stay abreast of the latest web news, and you could also follow the Twitter accounts of SEO gurus. However, the main thing to remember is that in the instance of an update, no one wins a prize for panicking or revamping their site the fastest.
Make a note of where you are when the update occurs and compare your metrics after a few weeks.
3. If you optimize for Google, you’re covered for all sites
The myth: You don’t need to worry about optimizing your content for other search engines if you’ve optimized it for Google.
The reality: Google search may comprise more than 60% of the search market, but Bing’s share is improving steadily. Bing is a great example of a website that works slightly different from Google and deserves your attention.
Bing doesn’t value backlinks as much as Google: instead, it compiles rankings based on user engagement, social signals, click-through rates, page authority and keyword domains. Google doesn’t use metrics such as Facebook shares or Twitter Followers directly in search rankings. So you can clearly see that if you only optimize for Google, you’re not covered for Bing.
If you are targeting exposure to 100% of web traffic, you should optimize for at least the top 3 search engines.
4. HTTPS isn’t important unless you’re selling stuff
The myth: You only need to bother with HTTPS encryptions if you’re in eCommerce, otherwise the original HTTP protocol works fine.
The reality: Wrong! At the start of 2017, the average worldwide volume of encrypted internet traffic finally surpassed the average volume of unencrypted traffic, according to Mozilla (the company behind the Firefox web browser).
That means when you visit a website, you’re more likely than not to see a little green lock right next to the web address that indicates it came to you via HTTPS, the web’s secure protocol, rather than plain old HTTP.
Google has said loud and clear that it will give preference to websites with the HTTPS prefix over others.
That’s because the encryption within HTTPS provides benefits like confidentiality, integrity and identity.
Ultimately, using HTTPS is better than leaving the web unencrypted and it’s been a priority for big sites like Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and The New York Times to switch to HTTPS.
We’ve passed the tipping point when it comes to encrypted vs unencrypted data, and organizations like Let’s Encrypt are now helping millions of companies add HTTPS to their sites for free.
5. H1 tags increase search rankings
The myth: Using H1 tags is a must-do when it comes to good SEO practice.
The reality: This is not at all true, technically. Whereas H1 tags do help to make content more organized for the reader and also make it easier for web developers to design your website, they don’t contribute to SEO directly.
Former Google software engineer Matt Cutts says in this video that it doesn’t matter whether you use H1 or H2. What matters is that your page contains relevant and useful information that will address the needs of your users.
A few years ago, H1 tags used to be one of the most critical SEO factors; today, however, they’re just a part of basic best practice and not a source of SEO differentiation.
6. Link-building is black hat and attracts Google penalties
The myth: Google hates black hat link-building!
The reality: This is hilarious, really. Google rewards your website for backlinks – the only proviso is that these backlinks have got to be from relevant and credible sources.
If you plant your website’s links on article farms, unrelated websites, spammy websites or websites with malware and other suspicious scripts, then yes, you can expect to be penalized for back-linking.
But in that instance, it’s actually spamming, not back-linking.
When you’re building quality links, you don’t need to worry about this SEO myth. Many people think that leaving comments on blogs is a black hat SEO technique, but that’s only the case if the comments only link to your website without adding value.
The key is to ask yourself if you’re adding value every time you leave a comment on a blog or link to a website in an article – if you are, then you’ve got nothing to worry about.
7. Content is king
The myth: All you need to do is create high-quality, useful content to rank well in search results without much help from SEO.
The reality: Look, I’m not going to bag out the ‘content is king’ mantra here for fear of upsetting too many digital marketers. But while publishing timely, relevant and well-researched content is great, it’s not going to get you to the top of Google alone.
Content is like one of many directors sitting on a board, waiting to make a joint decision. The other directors are equally powerful: some of them include quality backlinks, user experience and responsive design.
If your whole website isn’t optimized, crawlers could struggle to even find your content, which means it won’t show up in results at all.
Focus on content, for sure, but don’t be myopic about it, as you’ve got to take care of the user experience on the whole.
8. Hosting location is important
The myth: If your website isn’t located in the country you are targeting, you may as well forget about success.
The reality: While it is better to host your website in the company you are targeting, it’s not essential. Google is smart enough to showcase the right country version of your website to the right audience. And this study shows us that Google prioritizes quality information over local content.
That means ‘au’ links are shown to Australians and ‘nz’ links are shown to New Zealanders.
If you don’t already use a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), I suggest using Google Webmaster Tools’ geographic target setting. In the Webmaster Tools sidebar, simply go to Search Traffic > International Targeting, and specify the target country for the website.
For international websites, just select ‘unlisted’ from the tab below.
9. Having an XML sitemap will boost your search rankings
The myth: Installing an XML sitemap can help improve your search engine rankings.
The reality: A sitemap doesn’t affect the rankings of your web pages, although it does make them more crawlable.
Sitemaps give more information about your site to Google and therefore make sure it indexes quickly.
However, there’s never been any Google announcement or study-based outcome to suggest that XML sitemap submission improves your website’s SEO.
Use one to make sure all of your URLs are indexed for easy crawling as this can improve the visibility of your website in the long run.
I suggest trying a plugin like Google XML Sitemaps generator, which works great with WordPress websites.
10. With personalized Google searches, there’s no such thing as ranking first anymore
The myth: Since everyone’s search results are personalized, everyone sees different results and there’s no way to be ranked #1 anymore.
The reality: My request to all readers – please, don’t be mislead by such rumors. Here’s a trick to try at home.
Do five Google searches related to your industry’s niche, first using your personal computer (where, in all likelihood, you’re seeing personalized Google search results), and then by adding &pws=0 at the end of the URL of the SERP.
That depersonalizes Google.
Now notice the difference.
Chances are, there isn’t one. Because websites that are good enough to make it to Google’s top 10 are good enough to feature on any personalized searches, too!
The differences between personalized results and non-personalized results are relatively minor. The advent of personalization does mean that rank tracking may provide somewhat less authoritative data than before.
But in no way is it the end of SEO or does it necessitate a completely new look at SEO practices.
11. Keywords in comments and title tags provide SEO juice
The myth: The strategic placement of keywords in HTML comment tags and the title attributes of IMG and A HREF tags will help you win at SEO.
The reality: Rankings really don’t work this way.
First and foremost, comment tags specifically mean that the content is out of Google’s view for calculating ratings.
Secondly, title attributes are not supposed to help you with SEO.
This Moz article will help you understand the specifics of why precisely title attribute tags are not linked to SEO.
In summary
There are at least half a dozen more SEO myths I could add to this list, but these are some of the main ones I see causing confusion amongst digital marketers, programmers, webmasters, designers, small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Hopefully I’ve debunked a few myths for you or at least motivated you to apply a bit of critical thinking to the next one you hear.
There is no easy science to SEO, and because the digital landscape is constantly changing, it’s hardly surprising that there’s a lot of misinformation out there. But moving forward, stop giving time or energy to SEO strategies or techniques that have no substance behind them or probably came about because of a bunch of snake-oil SEO salesmen.
Which SEO myth ticks you off the most? Let me know in the comments below.
