AI’s “human in the loop” isn’t
I'll be in TUCSON, AZ from November 8-10: I'm the GUEST OF HONOR at the TUSCON SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION.
AI's ability to make – or assist with – important decisions is fraught: on the one hand, AI can often classify things very well, at a speed and scale that outstrips the ability of any reasonably resourced group of humans. On the other hand, AI is sometimes very wrong, in ways that can be terribly harmful.
Bureaucracies and the AI pitchmen who hope to sell them algorithms are very excited about the cost-savings they could realize if algorithms could be turned loose on thorny, labor-intensive processes. Some of these are relatively low-stakes and make for an easy call: Brewster Kahle recently told me about the Internet Archive's project to scan a ton of journals on microfiche they bought as a library discard. It's pretty easy to have a high-res scanner auto-detect the positions of each page on the fiche and to run the text through OCR, but a human would still need to go through all those pages, marking the first and last page of each journal and identifying the table of contents and indexing it to the scanned pages. This is something AI apparently does very well, and instead of scrolling through endless pages, the Archive's human operator now just checks whether the first/last/index pages the AI identified are the right ones. A project that could have taken years is being tackled with never-seen swiftness.
The operator checking those fiche indices is something AI people like to call a "human in the loop" – a human operator who assesses each judgment made by the AI and overrides it should the AI have made a mistake. "Humans in the loop" present a tantalizing solution to algorithmic misfires, bias, and unexpected errors, and so "we'll put a human in the loop" is the cure-all response to any objection to putting an imperfect AI in charge of a high-stakes application.
But it's not just AIs that are imperfect. Humans are wildly imperfect, and one thing they turn out to be very bad at is supervising AIs. In a 2022 paper for Computer Law & Security Review, the mathematician and public policy expert Ben Green investigates the empirical limits on human oversight of algorithms:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3921216
Green situates public sector algorithms as the latest salvo in an age-old battle in public enforcement. Bureaucracies have two conflicting, irreconcilable imperatives: on the one hand, they want to be fair, and treat everyone the same. On the other hand, they want to exercise discretion, and take account of individual circumstances when administering justice. There's no way to do both of these things at the same time, obviously.
But algorithmic decision tools, overseen by humans, seem to hold out the possibility of doing the impossible and having both objective fairness and subjective discretion. Because it is grounded in computable mathematics, an algorithm is said to be "objective": given two equivalent reports of a parent who may be neglectful, the algorithm will make the same recommendation as to whether to take their children away. But because those recommendations are then reviewed by a human in the loop, there's a chance to take account of special circumstances that the algorithm missed. Finally, a cake that can be both had, and eaten!
For the paper, Green reviewed a long list of policies – local, national, and supra-national – for putting humans in the loop and found several common ways of mandating human oversight of AI.
First, policies specify that algorithms must have human oversight. Many jurisdictions set out long lists of decisions that must be reviewed by human beings, banning "fire and forget" systems that chug along in the background, blithely making consequential decisions without anyone ever reviewing them.
Second, policies specify that humans can exercise discretion when they override the AI. They aren't just there to catch instances in which the AI misinterprets a rule, but rather to apply human judgment to the rules' applications.
Next, policies require human oversight to be "meaningful" – to be more than a rubber stamp. For high-stakes decisions, a human has to do a thorough review of the AI's inputs and output before greenlighting it.
Finally, policies specify that humans can override the AI. This is key: we've all encountered instances in which "computer says no" and the hapless person operating the computer just shrugs their shoulders apologetically. Nothing I can do, sorry!
All of this sounds good, but unfortunately, it doesn't work. The question of how humans in the loop actually behave has been thoroughly studied, published in peer-reviewed, reputable journals, and replicated by other researchers. The measures for using humans to prevent algorithmic harms represent theories, and those theories are testable, and they have been tested, and they are wrong.
For example, people (including experts) are highly susceptible to "automation bias." They defer to automated systems, even when those systems produce outputs that conflict with their own expert experience and knowledge. A study of London cops found that they "overwhelmingly overestimated the credibility" of facial recognition and assessed its accuracy at 300% better than its actual performance.
Experts who are put in charge of overseeing an automated system get out of practice, because they no longer engage in the routine steps that lead up to the conclusion. Presented with conclusions, rather than problems to solve, experts lose the facility and familiarity with how all the factors that need to be weighed to produce a conclusion fit together. Far from being the easiest step of coming to a decision, reviewing the final step of that decision without doing the underlying work can be much harder to do reliably.
Worse: when algorithms are made "transparent" by presenting their chain of reasoning to expert reviewers, those reviewers become more deferential to the algorithm's conclusion, not less – after all, now the expert has to review not just one final conclusion, but several sub-conclusions.
Even worse: when humans do exercise discretion to override an algorithm, it's often to inject the very bias that the algorithm is there to prevent. Sure, the algorithm might give the same recommendation about two similar parents who are facing having their children taken away, but the judge who reviews the recommendations is more likely to override it for a white parent than for a Black one.
Humans in the loop experience "a diminished sense of control, responsibility, and moral agency." That means that they feel less able to override an algorithm – and they feel less morally culpable when they sit by and let the algorithm do its thing.
All of these effects are persistent even when people know about them, are trained to avoid them, and are given explicit instructions to do so. Remember, the whole reason to introduce AI is because of human imperfection. Designing an AI to correct human imperfection that only works when its human overseer is perfect produces predictably bad outcomes.
As Green writes, putting an AI in charge of a high-stakes decision, and using humans in the loop to prevent its harms, produces a "perverse effect": "alleviating scrutiny of government algorithms without actually addressing the underlying concerns." The human in the loop creates "a false sense of security" that sees algorithms deployed for high-stakes domains, and it shifts the responsibility for algorithmic failures to the human, creating what Dan Davies calls an "accountability sink":
https://profilebooks.com/work/the-unaccountability-machine/
The human in the loop is a false promise, a "salve that enables governments to obtain the benefits of algorithms without incurring the associated harms."
So why are we still talking about how AI is going to replace government and corporate bureaucracies, making decisions at machine speed, overseen by humans in the loop?
Well, what if the accountability sink is a feature and not a bug. What if governments, under enormous pressure to cut costs, figure out how to also cut corners, at the expense of people with very little social capital, and blame it all on human operators? The operators become, in the phrase of Madeleine Clare Elish, "moral crumple zones":
https://estsjournal.org/index.php/ests/article/view/260
As Green writes:
The emphasis on human oversight as a protective mechanism allows governments and vendors to have it both ways: they can promote an algorithm by proclaiming how its capabilities exceed those of humans, while simultaneously defending the algorithm and those responsible for it from scrutiny by pointing to the security (supposedly) provided by human oversight.

𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐳𝐲 || 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐎’𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐱 𝐅𝐞𝐦!𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫
𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲_ one day you realize you are jealous of your boyfriend’s AI left hand. Because it wasn’t normal she always interrupted you two, and it was making you mad.
𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬_ age gap, angst, fluff, very mild nsfw, 𝘔𝘋𝘕𝘐 𝘗𝘓𝘌𝘈𝘚𝘌.
♪ ♫ The ultimate Miguel O’Hara playlist ✰ Index (+ fics here)
Every day, at some point, you got struck by the fact that you were Miguel O’Hara’s girlfriend.
You just simply couldn’t believe it. Like, at what fucking moment that happened?.
You met him as a late teenager (around 2-3 years ago), and now, starting your young adult days, it happened.
He knew you were a pain in the ass from the beginning. But ever since the first day, he tolerated you. Only to be increasing his affection for you day after day of having you in the team.
Until the change was evident between you two. You were always clinging to him like a koala. He only rolled his eyes every time you bothered him but never scolded you. The only person besides Lyla that was always in his office was you.
Lyla, that sneaky little burden….
“Did you make evaluations for the anomaly?…” Miguel’s voice startled you. When you looked down at your wrist, you accepted the communication to see his image on your watch and answer him.
“Just finished it…” you say, looking around the old train station. Earth - 9664 hosted a female lizard. And to be honest, it scared you a little.
“And?…” he urged you to continue.
“It’s moving towards the East…” The technology of the watch lets you know that your enemy is near you.
“Go and corner her. If you go to the south and turn left, you will corner her,” he indicated with a low voice.
“On it, bitch….”
“Did you just?-…” you find a moment to giggle after insulting your boyfriend.
“Sorry. You know lizards scare me….”
“I curse a lot when I’m nervous or stressed…” you didn’t know, but the man smiled back at the HQ.
“I know, little one….” Oh, you loved every time he decided to give you a nickname. Which didn’t happen very often.
“Alright, mi amor. Time to beat this…” you say, arming yourself with courage; you sigh.
“You can do this. I’ll be with you the whole mission and waiting for you when you come back….” you knew he would.
A loud grunt and violent movements near you evidently were getting closer. Fucking lizards and their stupid necessity to experiment with things out of their control.
_____________
When you came back, you were greeted by Gwen and Miles. They turned to look at the just-opened portal and quickly ran to you.
“Damn. What the hell happened to you?” Gwen asked, inspecting you.
“That hideous lizard!. It came with acid spit and everything!” Your hair was a mess; part of your suit was a disaster. Your left shoulder was bare, and a big burn was decorating the skin.
“Acid hit your skin?” Miles asked worriedly and shocked, handing a water bottle.
“Yeah. None of this would’ve happened if-… Where’s Miguel?” The teenagers look at each other, and you keep sighing.
“She left with Lyla an hour ago….” They know you’re slightly pissed; how you roll your eyes and then throw your head back is a clear sign of anger.
“What? Why?” You finally ask in disbelief.
Miguel was supposed to guide you through the mission, not leave with Lyla to do God knows what.
“A report got lost and apparently was important,” Gwen explains, reaching to take your weak body and help you...
“He left me for a missing report?. Oh, he’s…” but you didn’t finish because you moved your shoulder, and the pain was unbearable.
As Miles and Gwen escort you to the medical aisle of the HQ, all the other spider people turn to look at the mess that you are.
“Easy… I’ve never interacted with acid, but it sounds frightening,” Gwen admits kindly. You nod at her. Even when she’s just younger than you by little, both of you work well.
“Why has your skin not fallen apart?”
“I’m half spider, half butterfly, Miles. Remember?” your skin worked in different ways. It was shiny and firm. Soft but when injured, it healed a little slower than it should.
“Are your wings okay?” Gwen asks, your arms move a little only to confirm your wings were fine, but they hurt. You could grow cute butterfly wings like a tattoo inked to your skin. It was pretty cool.
“Yeah, well… I don’t know.” You admitted, but thankfully, the three of you were at the medical aisle. Spider-doctor kindly gave you a private room, making Miles and Gwen wait outside.
“You’re fine. But I need 12 hours of rest at least. Okay?” you nod at him. After that, Spider-doctor left, and you spent hours with Miles and Gwen. Even Hobie and Pavitr played cards, brought you food, and chatted.
But Miguel didn’t come for the whole ass evening. Between talks with your friends, you mentally cursed your asshole boyfriend.
Sometime after Doctor-spider checked on you again and gave you a syringe of vitamins, Miguel's tall and broad figure entered the room.
“Hey…” his sweet voice almost made you forget you were mad at him. He came closer to take a look at you.
Immediately his eyes looked at your chest, noticing you were only wearing a strapless top because your shoulder was covered in bandages and dry blood.
Your right cheek was slightly purple, and some scratches covered your neck.
“Don’t you dare to ask if I’m okay or that you’re sorry, Miguel O’Hara,” you say firmly, looking at his pouting face? He might be sorry, but you didn’t want to hear it.
“I’m sorry…I really am” he has to kneel beside the hospital bed. Cause he’s so tall that even on his knees, he could barely face you.
“Oh really?… Even if a report was missing, I would have stayed with you the whole time. Bad boyfriend…” he wants to laugh when you say the last two things crossing your arms and looking to the window, away from him.
But he was trying, ridiculously trying to be good enough for you.
“Yeah, right. I’m never doing it again, promise,” he stated, taking your hand.
You really wished he was more like this every time, every single fucking day.
Because even as your boyfriend, he was always so damn distant.
“Don’t make promises you can’t fulfill…” How he was caressing your knuckles distracted you from your anger. He was good, very possessive, but a fantastic distant partner.
“Look at me, please….” His sharp features, gorgeous lips, and attractive eyes greet you. You simply stare in awe.
“I hate seeing you like this. And knowing it was my fault makes me feel worse.”
“I take care of you, and you take care of me. Right?…” slowly, you smile.
“I think we’re getting on the same page, handsome” When you interlock your hand with his, he knows it’s okay.
“Stop…” he sighs, closing his eyes. The touch of your free hand across his soft hair and scalp is always too much for him. All his worries are gone, but he knows it’s not the right time or place.
“Why? Does this remind you of something, babe?…” it makes him remember something for sure.
His head buried between your legs. A wet mess and the most erotic night of his life.
“Don’t do this to me, y/n,” he pleads. The memory of your first time with him some weeks ago was killing him because it hadn’t happened again.
“I’ve been thinking about it…” your disguised innocence shouldn’t turn him on. No, you are innocent compared to him. You’re a burst of light. But you had to unconsciously be so hot and sweet.
“What part?” He teases back. Feeling proud and praised already.
“Everything. Though, I’m scared you won’t fit in again next time…” there it is. You knew his weak point. The amount of ego he needed.
“Oh, butterfly. You want to find out?” You nod, slightly spreading your legs, lifting the ruffled hospital gown you had.
His lips brush yours when someone something interrupts the moment.
Instantly you pull the gown down, and Miguel pulls away from you.
“Oh, hey. Sorry to interrupt!” It’s Lyla, always smiling and moving energetically around you two. You feel awkward.
“An anomaly has appeared on earth-1234, boss,” she alerts happily.
Earth-1234, Does that even exist?.
Miguel sighs. His serious tone and distance from you are back. While you welcomed the private affection, you disliked letting him go. Because you didn’t have enough of him, maybe you never would.
“We need to go to the monitors and trace a plan. Do I call Jessica? Or Peter?” The AI asked, completely ignoring you.
Which made you feel uncomfortable feeling on your chest. And you refused to let it take control.
“Whoever is available first,” your boyfriend says, returning to see you.
“I’m not taking too much. Sleep, and I’ll be here when you wake up” Knowing there was no other option, you nod.
You know he’s not gonna kiss you or pet you. He’s just going to leave because Lyla was there.
So something possessed you to say something out loud.
“Love you…” it wasn’t the first time. He had said it; you had too. But never in public, just in the privacy of you two.
“…me too,” he says, with his mask on. He means it, but he’s awkward about saying it out loud. Because he doesn’t want to show anyone he could be soft.
And you try to convince yourself you had said that I love you out loud because Miguel couldn’t kiss you that night.
Because that would compensate for the lack of communication and time together.
But deep down, you said it out loud so Lyla could hear.
______________
A new area in the cafeteria allows you to sit outside and have a beautiful view of the city and the clear sky.
You always fight for a table over there. The closer your lunch was to sunset, the cooler the sky looked.
“Hey… there’s my favorite flying spider,” Peter greeted, sitting next to you, placing his tray of food and Mayday on the table.
“Hello to my favorite spider father and spider baby duo,” you salute back. They both giggle, even if Mayday is less than a year old.
“How have you been?” The older man asks. You debate whether to say anything about your increasing insecurity or not.
“I’m good. I’ve missed you two,” you had to admit. Peter was so kind when you met him; everyone said he was a bad mentor. But you believed he had some talent.
“Same. This missy here always gets fussy when she hears your voice” That information melted your heart. Causing you to reach for Mayday and hug her tightly.
“Oh, Mayday. I love you like you were my sister” Peter had already asked you to be his kid godmother because MJ wanted to organize a baptism for little Mayday.
“My spider sense tells me you’re not comfortable. Mind to elaborate?” The man changed the subject suddenly. So you decided, if Peter had to learn Miguel was your boyfriend, fuck it.
“Have you ever thought about where Lyla comes from?” Your question made him furrow, ignoring that Mayday was eating a slice of apple from your salad.
“What? Why?”
“She spends a lot of time with Miguel….” You hoped Peter wouldn’t start asking more questions about Miguel.
“Well, she’s like Miguel’s second hand.”
“Yeah, but-, When did she start sticking around? I’m just curious,” Peter shrugs.
“She was already here when I entered. Some say Jessica brought it here. Others…” When he leaned to whisper, it made you nervous.
“There’s an old rumor. JUST A RUMOR… That Miguel created Lyla based on his…late lover.”
“WHAT?” You asked in horror.
“I know. Sounds terrible, but… honestly? I don’t know either. I’ve never asked him.”
Hobie startled you with the sound of his tray banging against the table. Miles, Gwen, and Pavitr were already seated when you looked around.
“What sounds terrible?” Pavitr asked, but you didn’t know whether to answer or not.
“Would you guys think I’m crazy for being jealous of Lyla spending too much time with Miguel?” Everyone stood quiet, looking at you like you were the weirdest creature in all universes.
“Why?” Gwen asked, with her pierced brow arched.
“Cause-, uh-… He’s my boyfriend.” A new wave of silence and looks ruled the table.
Until everyone kind of digested the information and started acting like the fire drill of The Office show.
“NO WAY, WHAT?” Miles yelled. Gwen checked your forehead to see if you were okay and not on some delirious fever moment.
“I wasn’t expecting this…” Hobie didn’t act very surprised, but of course, he was.
“When did this happen? Why you didn’t tell us?” Asked an offended Peter, taking Mayday from your arms as a punishment.
“Because…ugh-, It was a new relationship and-, I-, I- wanted to make sure it was real-“ you’re nervous. And the fact that their looks are fixated on you makes you feel even more nervous.
“How long?” Asks Pavitr starting to eat.
“Like… two or three months?” They nod and start acting like it is apparent.
“Okay. That explains a lot… but, How?” The blonde girl’s question makes you remember how everything started.
“We met when I was your age…”
“And Uhm-. I don’t know; we always had a soft spot for each other. Only now that I’m a little older, it just happened” Since Pavitr and Peter are the only ones in relationships, they nod with a little smile. Like two little lovers who know what you’re talking about.
“That’s very sweet…” Your friend Pav was a helpless romantic. And it shows.
“And what has to do with Lyla?” Hobie asked.
“She’s very nosy…and Miguel never stops her from being nosy.”
“Like?…”
“Yesterday. I stayed late with Miguel keeping track of the anomaly recordings. And we-, uh, we were kissing. Then she appeared out of nowhere, and with one sentence, she had Miguel out of the room, leaving me alone” Instantly, Gwen and Miles remembered the incident of some days ago when you came back from fighting with that lizard.
“Lyla has always been with Miguel. But… maybe you should talk to him,” Peter suggested, but they received your head shaking after no.
“I can’t. He makes me nervous as hell.”
“But he’s your boyfriend….” Miles reminded you.
“So? He still makes me nervous” They couldn’t blame you. Miguel was… imposing.
“Just talk to him…” Since Peter was the oldest in the group, you knew he was right.
…
And you took a decision hours later, you would avoid your boyfriend.
Because the more you thought about the rumor Peter told about, the more freaked out you started to feel.
You successfully left the HQ that night without telling Miguel anything.
He noticed it; you were being distant. Sending him a little awkward smile before you left with Mayday to the ladies' room.
“I think she’s avoiding me, Lyla,” the AI shrugged.
“But you’ve been great. All the things we reviewed… Isn’t it enough?” She speaks worriedly.
“I don’t know…” he replied distantly.
“Well, let’s try harder. I’m a busy gal, and you have to get the girl” Her giggles made Miguel roll his eyes.
“I meant, keep. Keep the girl, boss” After that, she disappeared.
When Miguel tried to find you, he learned you had already left the HQ.
___
The curiosity to eat authentic Puerto Rican food was killing you. Miles had invited you and Gwen to his mom’s birthday party. You had met her once, and she was so sweet, his father too. His family had this fantastic warmth that made you feel welcome.
So the three of you agreed to meet at the HQ an hour before the event.
Many of your coworkers looked weirdly at you cause you weren’t wearing your suit. You had a halter top, wide jeans, and a pair of sexy boots. Your wings were safely inked to your skin, and the top did an excellent job showing them off.
A hoodie hangs on your forearm, and a little gift box is in your right hand. Only a little set of fine jewelry.
“Boo!” You jump at Gwen, scaring you. She’s wearing a dress and jacket with sneakers. Very much of her style.
“Damn, Gwen!. You scared me….”
“Hey, you look hot,” she said, sending you a smirk.
“That wasn’t the intention; it’s a family party. By the way, you also look very pretty” She thanks you, and seconds later, Miles comes in.
“Hey! Ready?” The boy flatters you and Gwen before checking his watch and opening a new portal.
A shiver runs through your spine because you know Miguel must be around, probably looking for you.
Literally, you push your younger friends inside the portal.
…
Miguel watches you dance in the middle of the rooftop with Gwen and the other guys. You seem happy, unbothered, and peaceful. He understood that maybe Lyla was right; he didn’t need a daily checkout to see how he was doing. He needed to be himself and make you happy.
Yes, he had followed to earth-1610. Because he was losing his mind over what he did wrong to cause your distance.
Seeing you so happy and having fun went straight to his heart because he couldn’t remember when you two had that much fun since your relationship started.
So he dressed like an average person with his suit underneath and took the courage to walk into the party. Because Pavitr told him that it was Miles’s mom's birthday party. Hobie refused and basically said fuck off to Miguel. So with Pavitr's words in mind, he was entering the party.
The Latin music was evident, and everyone laughing. He got closer and caught you singing a song in Spanish and dancing. The sight was attractive for Miguel, a definitive turn-on.
Slowly, he stood behind you, making you jump.
Sure, you were surprised to see your asshole boyfriend with a hand on your hip, in casual clothing, outside the HQ.
“Miguel? What the hell are you doing here?” You’re in shock. Gwen looks closer and blinks, unable to believe what she’s seeing. So she nudges Miles, and his reaction is the same.
“You’re avoiding me….” you get blushed. The embarrassment of the cause of your distance from him, and the anger towards his attitude, and Lyla. Ugh…
“What? No. I’m not avoiding you….” he sends you a prominent look. Trying to tell you he’s not stupid.
“Yes, you are….” Before you can say anything else, Gwen drags Miles and stands beside the two of you.
“What are you doing here?” Gwen asks, judging your lover. Miles is quiet and slightly nervous that the man who tried killing him some time ago was at his home.
“I need to talk with y/n” Miles shrugs at Miguel’s comment. While he sips the soda from a red cup.
“Why? It’s our free day, man. And you don’t like the dangers of going to random universes if there are no anomalies” You stay quiet. Only glancing between the pair of teenagers and Miguel.
“Because, Miles… She’s my girlfriend. And I don’t have to worry because the only Spider-Man and Spider-Girl of this earth are in front of my eyes.” No one was expecting him to publicly confirm he was your boyfriend.
“Now… we’re going inside to the hallways to talk. Privately…” Before anyone can add anything, his giant hand drags you across the rooftop inside the building.
“Now, would you tell me what it’s going on?” He asks calmly. You sigh, hands on your hips.
“Okay… I feel-“
Maybe it was the most reasonable idea to maturely talk about the issue. But everything goes to hell when Lyla appears between you two.
“Woah. Am I late? Hope not to cause-“
“GOD!. She’s my problem!” You spit out, tired and highly irritated. And there was no turning back; you had to do this with both being present.
“Me?” Lyla asks, offended.
“Look, she’s known me for some time now, and you keep treating me like a ghost.”
“She’s always interrupting us and taking you away from me. The only thing left is her interrupting us in the middle of the action bed to give you a new list of anomalies” Both stand there quietly. Super awkward and uncomfortable. At least the hallway of that floor is empty, and the sound of the music coming from the rooftop.
“And I don’t know if I’m fucking jealous or not. But I’m certainly hurt, and this is so embarrassing, so… I’m just-gonna… leave.”
“It’s nothing personal, Lyla. I’m sorry. And I wouldn’t be opposed if you choose to break up with me, Miguel” Your cheeks were burning, dying out of cringe. So you awkwardly run downstairs, and once you are far enough, you spread your wings to fly and swing with your webs through the city.
This thing of being in love was making you crazy.
——-
You spent two days with Gwen. In case Miguel tried to break up with you at your home on earth-1610, in your apartment. Or, in case he wanted to reach you in the HQ.
You just wanted to postpone the moment.
You couldn’t because an emergency emerged, and even Jessica called you.
“Hey, I’ve been covering you for two days. But this is an emergency. We need you. Relax, it will only be Spider-Cat, Hobie, and I,” she alerted you through the watch.
“I’ll see you on earth-3344 in ten….”
It was 7:00pm on Gwen’s universe. She was out, and the whole two days you spent with her, you were crying and sobbing all over her place.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck… FUCK” You keep cursing as you hurry to get your suit. At least you took a shower the day before.
You look okay. Your eyes were red from evidently crying for long periods. Aside from that, everything seemed stable.
So you leave a note for Gwen and make your way to earth-3344.
…
The showers are empty. You keep singing Stars Dance like you are part of a music video.
I'll make you whisper my name
And never leave the room
Night and day, I'II be your muse
No other girl can make you feel the way I do.
You had a good voice, you had to admit.
After the fight with some alternate venom, you ended up as a mess, so you decided to use the showers of the HQ and then call it a day.
Luckily, you hadn’t thought about Miguel and your stupid tantrum about him and Lyla. Your mind was on what you would have for dinner that night.
I can make the stars dance
Light up the moon
I can make the stars dance
If you want me to.
“Found her, boss. The ladies showers on the eighth floor,” You scream when you hear a voice behind you. Lyla is there, talking to someone.
“WHAT THE HELL?” You yell again, gripping your towel harder. There was no time to process what was happening; you just looked worried at the AI.
“There you are. Miguel has been looking for you like crazy. He’s coming right now!” Your eyes widen exaggeratedly, so you rush to turn and grab your things.
“WHAT?. No, no, no…” she’s offering a big smile.
“Gosh. I’m just in a towel, you know?”
“Oh. Don’t be ridiculous. I’m an AI!” And that’s when you remembered what you said about her last time. So you sigh, trying to find some time to apologize to her.
“Look… I’m sorry about the other day. It’s just… I miss him, and… we’re both busy. So I really treasure every moment I have with him.” Lyla tilts her head and starts pacing in circles around you.
“It’s okay. I knew it was wrong. But Miguel really wanted to check in with me after everything interaction you two had” You frown, confused at her words.
“What?, Why?…”
“Cause he wants to make you happy, silly. And I’ve tried to tell him that it would be better if he decided to be spontaneous rather than a perfectionist” Instantly, your heart softened twice. A smile appeared on your face, and you couldn’t help but stare at your feet.
“He wants to take things slow and thought spending too much time together would make you want space from him. I guess it turned out the opposite of what he expected” You nod. Because him bringing Lyla to stay away from you caused all this.
And he came in. Closing the door behind him. You remember you were still in a towel, and your hair was wet.
“Thanks, Lyla” The AI nodded and gave you a friendly wink before disappearing.
You and Miguel stared in silence at each other for some minutes. He stepped further toward you, and the invasion of privacy didn’t bother you.
“I know.” You start, shrugging. Telling him that you are aware of his reasons to add Lyla every time he could.
“You should have told me before acting like an immature bitch and taking it out on Lyla” The memory of you yelling at Miles building makes you cringe. But Miguel is fixated on your clean face and how pretty you are. He had lost everything, but now… You were his everything.
Knowing that you wanted more of him calmed him.
“I don’t want to break up with you because of what happened.”
“I just want this to work out” his raspy voice and deep eyes are enough to make you nervous. So you just nod, grabbing his hand.
“Me too. But it would not last if things continued like now” There’s a little echo in the room. Only a single window illuminated the showers in green and blue tones.
In your head, it was the perfect time to kiss him. A hazy scenario, ideal for a kiss.
“I’m sorry. The event of the lizard and acid still haunts me…” he admits closing his eyes briefly.
“Hey, it’s okay. Look, there’s not even a single scar on my skin….” you say, looking at your bare shoulder.
“I see that.” Miguel didn’t mean to sound so lustful, but he did. He couldn’t help his anatomy to increase blood to certain areas.
“I can hear your heartbeats, dear” Your giggles make him want to blush.
“I won’t trespass until I apologize, little one” Of course, he would say something like that.
“I’m sorry.”
“Me too…” you reply, pouting.
“We don’t say it very often, but I-“
“I love you,” he says immediately, surprising you. But it’s more than enough. You have him, and you wouldn’t let him go again.
So you gently push him towards a bench facing the mirror and vanity where your stuff rests.
He lets you take the lead. There’s no turning back when he spreads his legs and grabs your hips to cage you between them.
“I like this….Now kiss me.” He likes your eagerness because it drives him crazy how you could also be so shy and sweet at the same time.
Your chaotic attitude matches his stoic presence. And it never failed.
“Are you sure? Cause I don’t think I will be able to stop” Oh, you love that tone, the one he used the first he marked you as his.
“I think we should call Lyla” He can’t laugh.
“Now you want to call her?”
“To soundproof the room?”
“Smart little fairy…” he coos, and you instantly switch to the most passive girlfriend. You think it’s because of the new nickname. His little fairy…how cringe and sweet at the same time.
And he knows it.
So you let the towel fall. And like an animal instinct, your wings spread open, leaving you bare in front of him.
“Care to make us a safe room?” his eyes never leave the sight of your naked body, but he shoots out one of his shiny orange/red webs to lock the door of the showers.
As he makes you straddle him. You have to close your eyes at the feeling of his fangs brushing the soft skin of your neck. It tickles and sends shivers through your body.
But finally, he kisses you. It’s slow but very passionate. He takes the time to draw patterns through your naked back, barely brushing your wings. And make his lips give you the pleasure of feeling lost in the moment.
He hadn’t even touched you most intimately, and you feel like you had taken another shower.
Your body looks impossibly smaller compared to his broad figure. His hair starts to fall against his forehead, mixing with his sweat, turning you on more than it should.
“M-Miguel. Make love to me, please.” You finally plead. Surrendering to his charms.
“I’ll do more than that, amor.”
When his claws grasp your hips, it’s over; you’re a goner.
“Miguel?” You ask shyly.
He looks deeply into your eyes, ready to fulfill your desires. Because he can’t deny how much he loves you anymore.
“Please don’t stop kissing me,” so he does.
Cause you want him in every way. Accepting you’ve fallen too hard on him.

Cw DARKFIC, DUB-CON/NON-CON, dark cbf!Johnny, smut, manipulation, kissing, groping, teasing, tell me if I missed any. Since tumblr removed this post a few minutes ago, I’m reporting it! I’m not sure if it was removed because someone reported it or the AI found it or smt, but I always have a back up :)
Your mother had always cooed at how close you were with Johnny, an unbroken and loyal friendship that she hoped would keep even when you grew older, changing schools and moving to find work. She thought it an innocent thing, adorable and cherishable in every sense knowing that Johnny was a strong and aspiring man, he would be able to protect you and help you in your time of need. And he did, Johnny was glued to you by the hip, following you everywhere you went and stared at you with devoted and desperate eyes. You could trust Johnny with everything, even your deepest and darkest secrets.
When you confessed to Johnny that you watched your friends kiss, the naked love in their eyes shining through, and felt a slight twinge of curiosity and envy in your heart, he showed you how it felt to kiss with love. Johnny hid you in his room, fingers curled around your hair and pulling you forwards, his lips warm and soft against yours. He kissed you with intent, a hot and churning love that had you whimpering and clinging onto him, melting in his arms while he moved your lips to his beat. It took your breath away, instilling a burning fire in your heart, the young embers of a bonfire that would light up your heart with a booming throb. Despite you gasps and shortness of breath, you sought Johnny for a second and a third kiss, leaning towards him with pouted lips.
You were only 13 when you gave your first kiss to the perfectly plumps lips of your best friend.
When you caught boys groping their girlfriends in public areas, unabashed about their affection being perceived as lewd or inappropriate for the public, and gossiped with Johnny about how weird it was to grope someone - even a lover - in public was and that it should be kept indoors, especially when one would moan or yelp, Johnny explained it to you with his body. You were left in your house’s living room, parents off to work and leaving you two alone at home, he groped you, his rougher fingers kneading your pubescent body. Johnny squeezed the curve of your hips, trailing down your plush thighs and up your ass until you gasped in shock before it turned into mewls, little, breathy sounds that encouraged Johnny to do more. He slid his hand beneath your shirt and pinched your perked nipples, rolling your little nubs between his thumb and index while you arched, writhing so much that Johnny had to straddle you to keep you from moving too much.
You were only shy of adulthood when you felt the first dribble of slick down your ass from your childhood best friend’s hands.
When you shared to Johnny all the stories of your friends losing their virginity - the V-card, they called it, as if it were something worth losing or giving without much though - and all the brutish and callous ways they spoke of it, you edged on shock and apprehension about such a thing, Johnny promised he would show you how important it was to give it to someone worth your time and heart —him.
“Ye trust me, dinnae ye,” he whispered your name so reverently, his breath tickling your nape as he pressed himself into you.
You do, your trust Johnny with your whole life, but you were still unsure about it. You were nervous with how optimistic Johnny was about taking your virginity as much as he was to give you his, and yet, despite your fears, you still gave yourself to him because he was your trusted, childhood best friend. Johnny fucked you amaturish but devoted snaps of his hips, rocking into you until you cried out his name whenever he bumped into something gummy and sensitive inside of you. You bled, but the pain never persisted, it was quickly swallowed by pleasure, waves of drowning ecstasy that numbed your mind and wracked your body with tremors. You saw the appeal in losing your virginity, to succumb to the pleasure of sex and give yourself to someone you truly loved and trusted.
You were only 18 when you felt the uncut and hard cock of your childhood best friend.

More than 300 million children across the globe are victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse each year, research suggests. In what is believed to be the first global estimate of the scale of the crisis, researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that 12.6% of the world’s children have been victims of nonconsensual talking, sharing and exposure to sexual images and video in the past year, equivalent to about 302 million young people. A similar proportion – 12.5% – had been subject to online solicitation, such as unwanted sexual talk that can include sexting, sexual questions and sexual act requests by adults or other youths. Offences can also take the form of “sextortion”, where predators demand money from victims to keep images private, and abuse of AI deepfake technology. The research suggested that the US is a particularly high-risk area. The university’s Childlight initiative – which aims to understand the prevalence of child abuse – includes a new global index, which found that one in nine men in the US (equivalent to almost 14 million) admitted online offending against children at some point. Surveys found 7% of British men, equivalent to 1.8 million, admitted the same. The research also found many men admitted they would seek to commit physical sexual offences against children if they thought it would be kept secret. The chief executive of Childlight, Paul Stanfield, said: “This is on a staggering scale that in the UK alone equates to forming a line of male offenders that could stretch all the way from Glasgow to London – or filling Wembley Stadium 20 times over. “Child abuse material is so prevalent that files are on average reported to watchdog and policing organisations once every second. “This is a global health pandemic that has remained hidden for far too long. It occurs in every country, it’s growing exponentially, and it requires a global response. “We need to act urgently and treat it as a public health issue that can be prevented. Children can’t wait.” Stephen Kavanagh, the executive director of Interpol, said traditional law enforcement approaches were struggling to keep up. “We must do much more together at a global level, including specialist investigator training, better data sharing and equipment to effectively fight this pandemic and the harm it inflicts on millions of young lives around the world,” he said. Grace Tame, a child sexual abuse survivor, who founded the Grace Tame Foundation, said a centralised global research database was essential to safeguarding children.
but sure child abuse isn't "normalized" at all

I’m inclined to agree with you about AI image generation but I was reading about Google’s currently-in-development program that just seems like it’s AI generated plagiarism:
“To produce articles, publishers first compile a list of external websites that regularly produce news and reports relevant to their readership. These sources of original material are not asked for their consent to have their content scraped or notified of their participation in the process—a potentially troubling precedent, said Kint.
When any of these indexed websites produce a new article, it appears on the platform dashboard. The publisher can then apply the gen AI tool to summarize the article, altering the language and style of the report to read like a news story.”
Idk in general I don’t see any positive developments coming out of LLMs beyond mild novelty and this specifically seems like using the technology to straightforwardly do plagiarism, minus any meaningful transformation or sleight of hand
yeah this is definitely my least favorite part of AI in general, the gradual shitting up of google search results. and just like with AI image generators being used to crib a specific artist's style, this use of AI is tricky to figure out a response for because it fundamentally doesn't create any "new" kind of offense (like those AI image gens used to "undress" pictures of women), it just massively lowers the barrier of entry for an existing one.
the parallels between these "plagiarism summarizers" and warehouse automation robots is actually kind of funny now that i think about it. in a vacuum, they both save human labor: summarizer-bots could just be used on a personal level to give people a summary of recent articles from sites that they personally choose to follow like an RSS Feed (remember RSS Feeds? oh my god im so old), and automated storage and retrieval systems literally exist to make warehouse work easier. and yet because we live in a world where capitalism demands websites make their money off ad revenue and warehouses make their money off working their employees to the bone, summarizer-bots are used to shit up search results with autocompleted drivel that reads like the intro to a recipe on a cooking blog, and ASRSs are used to fire half of a company's workforce while doubling production quotas on the remainder. there's so much potential for robotics to help humanity as a whole but all the money rn is funneled into getting robots to either cut corporate costs or kill people

Coven, Part I
Coven is a work of erotic fiction, intended for adults 18+, written by Ottopilot. Images were AI-generated by Ottopilot using Stable Diffusion 1.5. Don't like AI? Text-only version here. Content warnings: sexual content, mature language, mind control, corruption, occult, sadism
This is: Part I, Continued in: Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V
"I didn't have anywhere else to go," Sarah murmured, her voice scratchy and quivering. She brought the mug of hot tea up to her lips, feeling the warmth spread down her chest.
Lilith Solomon studied the wearied figure on her living room couch, her fiery hair and sharp features obscured by a damp black hoodie. After two years, Sarah appeared unexpectedly tonight like a ghost, here to haunt Lily for past misdeeds. Lily observed Sarah intently while she frantically told her story, flinching at the thunder as her eyes anxiously darted towards the window, looking for unseen boogiemen. Finally, those big brown eyes settled on Lily, and behind the weary facade, she recognized the Sarah Rodgers she knew so well.
Lily spoke, her voice calm and measured. "Sarah, I want you to know you'll be safe here." Strong and reassuring. Same old Lil, keeping up appearances, Sarah thought, taking a sip of tea while hiding a slight smile. She hasn't changed one bit. "Jamie set up a towel in the bathroom for you to get cleaned up, and I can lend you some clean clothes. I think it's best if you get some rest tonight."
Lily rose from her seat opposite Sarah. She towered over Sarah, her imposing presence a contradiction to her soft, friendly face. With her smooth mahogany skin and waves of raven black hair, she looked positively regal in the moonlight.
The words dried up in Sarah's throat, and she blushed as she realized she was staring. She wanted to tell her former lover she was a goddess. She wanted to ask her why she left. But all she could muster was a nod, and a thank you.
Lily closed the bedroom door softly behind her. She sauntered over to the open window, closing her eyes and removing her jewelry. She took in the smells of the unexpected autumn storm as she tried to process Sarah's frenzied arrival. She had made every effort to appear composed and dispassionate, but she could not deny being rattled by her former love's reinsertion into her life.
Emerging from the en suite on the other side of the room, Lily's boyfriend Jamie misread her conflict for incredulity. "Do you believe her?"
"How much did you hear?" a weary Lily asked.
"Enough," Jamie Mendoza shrugged. He leaned against the entryway, a blue t-shirt and athletic shorts hung nicely on his slim, toned frame. He rubbed his index finger against his five o'clock shadow pensively. "I can believe quite a bit. Hell, I'm Filipino, we still have exorcisms. But witches? Human sacrifice?"
"What concerns me is Sarah believes it," Lily said, frowning. "That woman is terrified. I hope it's okay if she crashes here for a couple of days while I check this out."
Jamie nodded. "Sure. I have classes, but I can swing by before lunch and check on her." He paused. "You're seriously going to look into this?"
Lily sighed and nodded. "It's not like Sarah to just make shit up. Anyway, I'll grab a coffee and do some digging at the stacks. They won't miss me at the paper tomorrow morning. Besides…"
"You just have to know," Jamie finished knowingly, with a chuckle. "The Blackthorn Ledger's intrepid bulldog reporter is a good friend to have."
"Yeah," Lily said, her voice trailing. She wondered what Jamie suspected about her past with Sarah.
Lily was still unsure about her future with Jamie. He was a kind and good-natured boyfriend - better than she deserved. She seemed drawn to the innocent ones like him. Even with her best intentions, she took too much pleasure in corrupting them, and they brought out her basest instincts.
No, she would break it off with Jamie before she got in too deep. That was the mistake she had made with Sarah. Even now, her need to help Sarah was less altruistic than driven by guilt that she failed in a domme's most important job: protecting their sub. Lily knew she wasn't as good and moral as the image she projected. That she was capable of darkness. And she hated that about herself.
"You see something you want?" Jamie said, playfully, a glint in his eye. Lily realized that, lost in her thoughts, she must have been staring.
It had been a long and strange night, but Lily was willing to take the bait. Besides, seeing Sarah again had stirred up a tempest in her mind and body, and she could use a release. "Bold of you to presume what I want," she snarled, her posture stiffening. Lily squared her body to face Jamie, hands on hips, her demeanor almost threatening. "Know your place, boy."
Silently, Jamie removed his shirt, then his shorts and briefs, revealing his smooth, hairless body. A flawless canvas, perfect for me to mark up, Lily thought, before dispelling that notion. He deliberately walked toward Lily, eyes cast downward, and kneeled directly in front of her. Finally, he looked up. "Yes, Mistress Lilith."
Lily playfully teased her fingers through Jamie's hair, then quickly grabbed it and pulled. Hard. Something between a gasp and a whimper escaped his mouth. "Make it up to me," she demanded. She guided his head under the hem of her dress, until she could feel his hot breath on her bare, glistening pussy.
Jamie panted, reveling in submission to his queen, his superior. Slowly, his hands traveled up her soft thighs, gripping her hips firmly but reverently. He inhaled deeply, her scent deepening his trancelike state, before his tongue dutifully lapped at her folds.
Holding his head still, Lily ground her pussy forcefully into his waiting mouth, as Jamie increased his fervor. "Such a good boy," she purred. And he was a good boy, so willing to obey. For a brief second, she let herself entertain the thought of how far she could push him. What would he let her do to him in the name of devotion? How wet would her pussy get to hear him squeal and see him grimace in pain? But Lily focused on the pleasure, and let the wave subside and recede from her mind. She always had - no, needed - to be in control.

Considering Perplexity’s bold ambition and the investment it’s taken from Jeff Bezos’ family fund, Nvidia, and famed investor Balaji Srinivasan, among others, it’s surprisingly unclear what the AI search startup actually is.
Earlier this year, speaking to WIRED, Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity’s CEO, described his product—a chatbot that gives natural-language answers to prompts and can, the company says, access the internet in real time—as an “answer engine.” A few weeks later, shortly before a funding round valuing the company at a billion dollars was announced, he told Forbes, “It’s almost like Wikipedia and ChatGPT had a kid.” More recently, after Forbes accused Perplexity of plagiarizing its content, Srinivas told the AP it was a mere “aggregator of information.”
The Perplexity chatbot itself is more specific. Prompted to describe what Perplexity is, it provides text that reads, “Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search engine that combines features of traditional search engines and chatbots. It provides concise, real-time answers to user queries by pulling information from recent articles and indexing the web daily.”
A WIRED analysis and one carried out by developer Robb Knight suggest that Perplexity is able to achieve this partly through apparently ignoring a widely accepted web standard known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol to surreptitiously scrape areas of websites that operators do not want accessed by bots, despite claiming that it won’t. WIRED observed a machine tied to Perplexity—more specifically, one on an Amazon server and almost certainly operated by Perplexity—doing this on WIRED.com and across other Condé Nast publications.
The WIRED analysis also demonstrates that, despite claims that Perplexity’s tools provide “instant, reliable answers to any question with complete sources and citations included,” doing away with the need to “click on different links,” its chatbot, which is capable of accurately summarizing journalistic work with appropriate credit, is also prone to bullshitting, in the technical sense of the word.
WIRED provided the Perplexity chatbot with the headlines of dozens of articles published on our website this year, as well as prompts about the subjects of WIRED reporting. The results showed the chatbot at times closely paraphrasing WIRED stories, and at times summarizing stories inaccurately and with minimal attribution. In one case, the text it generated falsely claimed that WIRED had reported that a specific police officer in California had committed a crime. (The AP similarly identified an instance of the chatbot attributing fake quotes to real people.) Despite its apparent access to original WIRED reporting and its site hosting original WIRED art, though, none of the IP addresses publicly listed by the company left any identifiable trace in our server logs, raising the question of how exactly Perplexity’s system works.
Until earlier this week, Perplexity published in its documentation a link to a list of the IP addresses its crawlers use—an apparent effort to be transparent. However, in some cases, as both WIRED and Knight were able to demonstrate, it appears to be accessing and scraping websites from which coders have attempted to block its crawler, called Perplexity Bot, using at least one unpublicized IP address. The company has since removed references to its public IP pool from its documentation.

Recent discussions on Reddit are no longer showing up in non-Google search engine results. The absence is the result of updates to Reddit’s Content Policy that ban crawling its site without agreeing to Reddit’s rules, which bar using Reddit content for AI training without Reddit’s explicit consent.
As reported by 404 Media, using "site:reddit.com" on non-Google search engines, including Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Mojeek, brings up minimal or no Reddit results from the past week. Ars Technica made searches on these and other search engines and can confirm the findings. Brave, for example, brings up a few Reddit results sometimes (examples here and here) but not nearly as many as what appears on Google when using identical queries. A standout is Kagi, which is a paid-for engine that pays Google for some of its search index and still shows recent Reddit results.
As 404 Media noted, Reddit's Robots Exclusion Protocol (robots.txt file) blocks bots from scraping the site. The protocol also states, "Reddit believes in an open Internet, but not the misuse of public content." Reddit has approved scrapers from the Internet Archive and some research-focused entities.
Reddit announced changes to its robots.txt file on June 25. Ahead of the changes, it said it had "seen an uptick in obviously commercial entities who scrape Reddit and argue that they are not bound by our terms or policies. Worse, they hide behind robots.txt and say that they can use Reddit content for any use case they want."
Last month, Reddit said that any "good-faith actor" could reach out to Reddit to try to work with the company, linking to an online form. However, Colin Hayhurst, Mojeek's CEO, told me via email that he reached out to Reddit after he was blocked but that Reddit "did not respond to many messages and emails." He noted that since 404 Media's report, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has reached out.

Chapter 46 | Prev chapter | Next chapter Chapter Index
DIVINER: Aloy! Have you saved everyone yet??
FlameHairSavior: What?
FlameHairSavior: Alva, it's early and I had a long night.
DIVINER: Because you saved everyone already??
FlameHairSavior: No, sort of the opposite.
β: wait you killed everyone
DIVINER: [Betrayal.gif]
ADMIN [Zo]: I'm sure she didn't mean it like that.
FlameHairSavior: Yeah, no, just...
FlameHairSavior: Look, I have a headache, can't you just watch my focus recordings?
DIVINER: That would take hours! Even with fast-forward!
HIMBO: YEAH, MOST OF IT IS JUST WATCHING YOU RUN AROUND THE BEACH OPENING BOXES.
FlameHairSavior: ...you already tried to watch me?
HIMBO: KOTALLO THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FASTER.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Specifically, I thought it might be a more effective way of obtaining an after-action report. We watched your arrival to the area, up to destroying the defense tower.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Even with what you had already told us, we could barely follow what was happening.
β: you move fast
HIMBO: DID YOU KNOW YOU MUTTER TO YOURSELF A LOT?
ADMIN [Zo]: Really, that's the only reason I could follow at all.
FlameHairSavior: Fine, just let me eat breakfast first.
DIVINER: Yay!
----
FlameHairSavior: All right, I'm awake.
β: did you stay up too late with your new girlfriend
FlameHairSavior: Sort of.
HIMBO: HA!
FlameHairSavior: Wait. Was that a joke?
β: yes
ADMIN [Zo]: It's good that you are getting some of your own.
HIMBO: YOU'RE OFFICIALLY LESS SHELTERED THAN YOUR SISTER!
β: i think it just means ive watched more stupid romantic comedies and sitcoms
HIMBO: IF I PRETEND TO KNOW WHAT THOSE ARE, CAN WE MOVE ON?
DIVINER: Aloy, PLEASE tell me you found some movie archives!! The context you all lack is killing me!
MARSHAL Kotallo: ...I think she was busy trying to rescue your people?
DIVINER: That's more important, obviously!!
FlameHairSavior: No archives yet. Just...
ADMIN [Zo]: Why don't you start from the beginning?
FlameHairSavior: Right.
FlameHairSavior: Seyka and I found a ruin where all the missing Quen had been working. It was Londra's old headquarters, or at least one of his major bases. He was having the Quen dig it up because he needed something.
FlameHairSavior: A few of them were worked to death.
DIVINER: And none of the Quen objected to this? We have labor laws.
FlameHairSavior: He is literally a Living Ancestor with incredible power come down from the heavens. He's got them all wrapped around his finger. He's promised them...
FlameHairSavior: I'll get to that later. We didn't find out much about his relationship with them in this first ruin.
DIVINER: Still, I can imagine. We're taught that the Ancestors are the font of all knowledge. If an actual Ancestor came down and was just a little clever...
MARSHAL Kotallo: Aloy said all the Diviners were dead. Do you think that things would have been different if there had been any left?
DIVINER: I don't know.
FlameHairSavior: I think Londra would have just recruited the non-Diviners. His little workforce isn't the entire expedition, just a big chunk.
HIMBO: YEAH, THAT'S HOW CULTS WORK. YOU REMEMBER THE ECLIPSE. THEY DIDN'T TRY TO RECRUIT ME, THEY TRIED TO RECRUIT THE ONES WHO WEREN'T LOYAL.
β: i thought they were racist why would they ever recruit you
HIMBO: YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
FlameHairSavior: Anyway. Londra has some sort of AI, Nova, sorting through data for him. We found a security recording. Londra was looking for some project called "MSP" and had it transferred somewhere else.
FlameHairSavior: He also mentioned running from Nemesis. I... might have bungled that part with Seyka.
MARSHAL Kotallo: You explained Nemesis to her? Well done.
MARSHAL Kotallo: A soldier cannot fight an enemy with incomplete information.
ADMIN [Zo]: I do wish we could tell more people. A blight is best fought by all hands working together.
DIVINER: I know we can't tell EVERYONE, but I think it's a good idea to at least tell our closest allies!
HIMBO: I EXPECTED YOU TO TRY TO AVOID THE SUBJECT.
FlameHairSavior: ...
β: you avoided the subject didnt you
FlameHairSavior: Look, there's... Seyka was clearly emotionally compromised, she's looking for her sister and I was annoyed that she was hiding something from me...
FlameHairSavior: I wanted to at least wait until we find her people. So she's not distracted.
DIVINER: That's... maybe a bad idea?
DIVINER: Won't she be mad?
MARSHAL Kotallo: Ultimately, Aloy is the one on the ground. We must trust her judgment.
FlameHairSavior: Anyway.
FlameHairSavior: We found Londra's second facility easily enough. He was siphoning power from a nearby Horus for a shield, but we disabled the siphons and got inside.
ADMIN [Zo]: Wait. A Horus as in a Metal Devil?
FlameHairSavior: Inactive, of course.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Thank the Ten for that.
HIMBO: JUST A HEAD'S UP, IF YOU EVER FIND AN ACTIVE ONE, I THINK WE ALL NEED TO HEAR ABOUT IT.
FlameHairSavior: Noted. So we got inside, found the Quen, but managed to convince them we were there for the... "Ascension Hall" to... "embrace his light."
HIMBO: CULT. CALLED IT.
FlameHairSavior: Yeah. It's basically a museum to Londra, with a "devotion test" to see if you're worthy of "ascending from this world."
β: i think i see where this is going
Icarus: From what little I was able to glean, every single Zenith agreed on fleeing Earth before Nemesis arrives. They just had disagreements on how best to do so.
DIVINER: As horrifying as all this sounds, I have to at least give him credit for thinking to use the locals more! Why didn't more of the Zeniths do some basic politics?
Icarus: Politics take time, even with an overwhelming technological advantage to scare the locals into compliance. They had the keys to the kingdom, why bother talking to the peasants?
Icarus: By the time they might have considered the possibility, they had already antagonized everyone.
ADMIN [Zo]: Speaking from personal experience, I take it?
FlameHairSavior: Anyway, the museum talked about Londra's relationships with his friends and wife, his favorite bodyguard, blah blah.
FlameHairSavior: He's pretty clearly the guy who wants adoring fans who don't disagree with him. That's what he thinks friends are.
HIMBO: AREN'T YOU HAPPY YOU GOT US INSTEAD?
FlameHairSavior: Most of you, at least.
HIMBO: OUCH!
FlameHairSavior: So we got through the door, it was annoying, found what he's doing.
FlameHairSavior: Londra co-opted the printer of the Horus to make himself a spaceship. But it's too small to take all the Quen, or even all the Quen who are following him. He's leaving most of them behind.
FlameHairSavior: Also, the launch will irradiate the land for a thousand miles, killing everything in the region.
HIMBO: BASTARD.
β: you can see the logic
HIMBO: YEAH, WE'RE ALL ALREADY DEAD, SO HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT KILLING US.
HIMBO: HE'S STILL A BASTARD.
β: not disagreeing
FlameHairSavior: The Quen soldiers came in while I was explaining all this to Seyka. They finally realized we were imposters. Still, they started shooting REALLY fast. They didn't even blink at Seyka being Quen.
DIVINER: That's... odd. I know you had a bad first impression, and our soldiers can certainly be xenophobic, but they shouldn't be so quick to attack another Quen! Especially if she was wearing a focus! Surely they would have considered she might be a Diviner!
FlameHairSavior: Yeah, I think something is up with them. I don't know if it's just Londra's cult or something else.
FlameHairSavior: So after the fight, the rest of the Quen found out they're being left behind.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Wait. You fought how many soldiers by yourself?
FlameHairSavior: I don't know. A dozen? Maybe two? Oh, and the boss had this Zenith-tech weapon that makes things explode. I might be able to use it.
MARSHAL Kotallo: And you did this with just yourself and the Quen woman.
HIMBO: THIS SURPRISES YOU?
MARSHAL Kotallo: No, I simply wanted to remind everyone that Aloy is terrifying.
FlameHairSavior: Funny.
FlameHairSavior: Well, I did tell Seyka about Nemesis after all. She... didn't take it well.
β: you get used to the existential angst after a while
FlameHairSavior: Yeah, I was really worried about her for a bit there.
FlameHairSavior: I was afraid she might give up on me after that, which would have been terrible.
β: erend
HIMBO: UPDATING THE ODDS AS WE SPEAK.
FlameHairSavior: What are you even talking about?
DIVINER: We can't tell you! It might foul the results!
FlameHairSavior: Fine. Anyway, we know where Londra's headquarters is, something called "the park." It has another tower, but I'm going to override a waterwing to get there. It can dive into the water, so we should be able to dodge the tower's shots.
β: she called me for help with that part
FlameHairSavior: Yeah, and now I'm just scrounging up the parts for the override.
DIVINER: But what about Seyka??
DIVINER: Did you talk to her?? Is she still on the team??
FlameHairSavior: Yes, yes, I did talk to Seyka. I think we're doing better now.
HIMBO: VERY INTERESTING.
FlameHairSavior: Now you're just doing it on purpose.
HIMBO: YEP!
ADMIN [Zo]: Personally, I find this all fascinating.
HIMBO: ODDS ARE LOOKING LIKE YOU'RE GOING TO LOSE THE POOL, THOUGH.
ADMIN [Zo]: I consider that a small price to pay.
FlameHairSavior: I hate you all.

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲_you’ve been lost for a day, and Miguel is worried. And it’s all because you’re not a science girl, thankfully your boyfriend is there to help you with your biochemistry class. 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬_age gap not specified (I’m 19, I can’t help it), idiot lovers, implied sex, fluff, Miguel best bf, civilian! shy! Insecure! reader, implied Mexican reader. ♪ ♫ My Miguel O’Hara playlist. ✰ Index (+ fics here)
Hi, I might be busy, but leave a message. Love u…. *beep*
Miguel smiled, thinking the love u you had as a voicemail was only for him.
But soon he grew irritated. You hadn’t answered your phone for the whole day. You hadn’t even touched the device he had created for you to contact him through his gizmo.
“Why the sad face? Is it because your girl hasn’t answered?” Lyla asked appearing beside him. Miguel only eyed her.
“No.”
“Mmh… Even civilians have busy lives. Just because they aren’t spiders doesn't mean they don’t have responsibilities” the AI said trying to do a wise tone.
“I know, Lyla.” Huffed Miguel, clearly annoyed.
“Well. Then don’t worry, boss. Your girl is okay” You were smart, and Miguel knew you were fine. It only was strange, because you always answered.
“Oh, Peter and Gwen asked permission to come and see you” Once again, he rolled his eyes. Miguel could already hear a silly comment coming from Peter and Gwen cheering him.
“Tell them to be quick”
“On it, boss” With that Lyla disappeared.
Miguel could not wait to leave the HQ and call it a day.
…
By the time the sun was about to start fading, Miguel was able to finish a mission and report and leave everything ready for the next week. The HQ was okay and all the anomalies were safely contained.
He knew it would be easier to find you with his suit.
Most of the people in Nueva York lived in apartments, futuristic and minimalistic ones. Miguel lived in one of those. Until he met you.
Not so long ago, when an anomaly was causing chaos, he saved your life. An angry venom was about to devour you when he appeared.
He thought you were a kid. But later he learned it was your first year of college just when he was finishing his Ph.D...
Long short story, both fell in love at the very beginning of summer, but he waited.
He waited until turned twenty to be your boyfriend. Because your mother disapproved of him.
Your house was in a decent neighborhood. The street had these rectangular houses that were built upside down with long crystal windows and terraces as rooftops.
But you weren’t there.
Your window was open, but no signs of you.
“Damn it, where are you, y/n?” He mumbled, hanging from his bright web in your window.
Huffing, he activated his mask again and started balancing across the city.
He even thought about calling your father. As the man seemed to tolerate Miguel; offering beers and exchanging tastes in music at every gathering. But your boyfriend knew he didn’t have to worry.
Although Miguel didn’t possess a spider-sense, he knew you were not in danger.
And he almost missed to see your tiny silhouette.
He stopped on the balcony of an apartment complex.
The smell of coffee invades the whole avenue.
Your seating, alone. There’s a cup beside your laptop and a book is splayed. You seem very concentrated. Miguel thinks your furrowed brows and hand under your chin are cute.
Peace floods him after finding you.
Relief assaulted him when you started collecting your belongings. You thank the waitress and you leave, putting on your earphones, and carrying your big tote.
So he smirks.
You are humming one of your favorite songs, and finally, you finished all the modules of all your classes.
You can’t wait to go back home and call Miguel. You had missed him so much and-
“What the hell?” You yell as you are pulled towards an alley.
Miguel is there. Suit on, imposing height coming closer to you.
You cross your arms over the red shiny web around your waist.
“Oh look… You don’t own me from Lesley Gore started playing” you say with sarcasm, showing him your phone.
“You didn’t answer any of my calls” Deep down, you knew he was worried. And it made you feel guilty.
“I know, I’m sorry. I’ve been busy with school” Suddenly, Miguel remembered you had started a new college semester. And everything made sense.
“Tough course in specific?” He asked, his mask disappearing to your eyes, meeting his gorgeous face.
“Uh—, actually… yes”
“Why you doubted?” You blushed. And more embarrassed you felt.
“I was struggling and I didn’t want to ask for help. Especially to you” Miguel was confused. His web let you go, but he came closer to you. The way he was so tall and broad made you feel like a rag doll, always having to look all the way up to him.
“And why is that?”…”
“Silly me completely forgot the biology of drugs was biochemistry in disguise” Miguel laughed. He actually laughed and to that point, you were red like a beetroot.
“You’re so stubborn, muñeca” The music had stopped at that point. Putting your phone inside your bag was a good idea to avoid his deep gaze.
“What? I don’t want you to know how much of an idiot I am. I’m not a science girl and you know that…” Miguel stopped smiling.
You had said in the past that you were ashamed. Because you weren’t special like him. You were just a normal girl living a boring life. While he was Spider-Man, he was the leader of a whole group of people like him. He had a job besides that. Miguel was successful, and you were soon to become something. Yet, you were lost.
“We’ve talked about this, y/n. I’m not with you for pity or something. I just happened to fall in love with the most sweet and caring woman I met in the middle of chaos” he had mentioned his late daughter. The mother wasn’t in the picture. Miguel never knew who was his partner in that universe.
And yeah, on Earth-929, he had seen this woman named Dana, but it didn’t last. He never felt in love.
“I know, Miguel. I know that very well, bebé” You pull him closer to you, and immediately your lips welcome him. He closes his eyes and completely leans towards you.
After missing you the whole day, he melts in your lips, savoring each second his skin is on yours. Allowing himself to feel happy.
“I would still look like a bimbo if you ever tried to help me” he laughed, a long laugh, before venturing again into your soft lips.
“Then I’d look like a himbo if you introduced me to arts and literature” both of you giggle, hugging in the middle of a dirty alley.
“Your parents are out?”
“Yeah. They went to visit my abuelita for the weekend. She’ll come next week so I declined the trip to stay and learn about enzymes” Your man nodded.
“I’ll take you home. And I’ll stay with you these days” The news made you really happy. Miguel had stayed with you before. But most of the time it was just a single night. You barely visited his apartment.
“Wait till my parents find out” As you giggle, he rolls his eyes.
“We can keep it a secret”
“Oh, so romantic of you” Miguel feels like a puppy when you start smooching his cheeks. He said he would never grow a beard because he didn’t like it. You had said loved him however he decided to look, but honestly, you really loved his clear face.
“Just for you, mi vida” When you met him, he was this grumpy giant who hated physical contact. Now, he was still a grumpy giant but loved physical contact, just yours of course.
“Wanna go watch the sunset?” He asks holding your waist. You nod, you would never say no.
“Hold tight” his strong arm envelopes your hips, and you hug him so tightly. And the pressure of being lifted appears suddenly, startling you.
As Miguel starts balancing across the city, he notices your head buried in his neck, which makes him smile under the mask.
“This isn’t new, muñeca. You are missing the view” Slowly, you open your eyes, but you don’t dare to move your head, the wind obstructing your view, but across your stubborn hairs, you can see Nueva York.
The lights of the cars, every single highway, the sounds of news on big screens. But the most beautiful view is Miguel and you and his arms. Every skyscraper is a mirror for you and your boyfriend. You can see how small you look compared to him.
As you start approaching your neighborhood, you have to close your eyes again.
You can feel how hard he loves you by the way he holds you as if his life depends on it.
“I don’t like the way my stomach churns every time we do this” you admit on his ear.
“Good to know we are already here, bebé” Pink, purple, orange, and yellow make your eyes collapse as you encounter the most beautiful sunset you’ve ever seen.
Miguel lets you go. He lets you walk across the rooftop and appreciates you for some seconds.
“It’s beautiful…” you almost whisper, referring to the sky.
“It is…” but he means it about you.
You were his miracle. A safe miracle that came in the most unexpected moment.
“It’s a fruit punch sunset…” You’re worried because you hear Miguel laughing again, which is weird. You turn around to encounter him smiling at you.
“Really? A fruit punch?” You’re blushing again.
“Okay… It’s a summer sunset” he knows you’re annoyed. Because he laughed earlier and now again.
“I’m sorry, mi chiquita. It’s a fruit punch sunset” he admits hugging you from behind.
His soft hair brushes your temple, and his hands around your stomach make you put yours on top of him.
“I love so much” he whispers.
“I love you too, Miguel” Everything was all too well with you. And he intended to keep it that way.
…
Again, that little scrunch you tended to do once you were stressed or highly concentrated.
“Okay… so enzymes are?…”
“Proteins.” You answer shyly.
“Correct”
“And where does the substrate bind with the enzyme?” He is testing you, and you don’t like it. But it’s for your own good.
“The activate site?”
“Good girl” You send him a bad look and he just chuckles.
“See? You’re not dumb, mi amor. You’re very smart” You bump your head with his shoulder.
Both of you are in the kitchen, on the table actually. All of your books are displayed with notes and pens.
“I really want to be done with requisites” Miguel sighed.
“I had to take three English courses when I was in college, y/n. And believe me, I wasn’t the most brilliant. My essays used to have red marks all over” you giggle.
“I don’t think so, you’re a genius”
“Just because I developed this thing with Lyla doesn’t mean I am a genius,” he said pointing at the gizmo in his wrist.
“Oh, Lyla. I miss her” you admit.
It had been a couple of weeks since you visited the HQ for the last time.
“I can take you next week. Actually, I’m strongly thinking that I might need help with the reports” proving that you were very smart, Miguel remembered the system you developed for the spiders to accommodate the reports filled after an anomaly attack.
“Oh stop it, Jessica said it would be fine”
“Jess had actually stated that having you would be very helpful” It surprised you.
“Really?”
“Yeah. A lot of people like having you around the HQ. Peter’s kid especially”
“Mayday?” Miguel nodded. Remembering how fussy the baby got after hearing your voice in a voicemail you had sent to your boyfriend.
“She’s a newborn, Miguel”
“So? She’s like two months old. She already knows you” you shrug. Remember the time you met Peter and how he told you his wife and he wanted to have a kid. A couple of weeks later he broke the news and you had crocheted the baby’s first plushie. A pink little spider girl.
“I love Mayday but don’t use her to make me your assistant” Miguel kissed your nose.
“Why would I do that, mi vida?”
“Because you’re a cheeky asshole” breaking a record, Miguel was laughing again.
“Ay, corazón. No seas así”
“I’ll think about working more time at the HQ. Qué tal?” He nods.
“That would make me very happy”
“Nah, you just want to have me around like your rag doll” Miguel smirked, so you gently punched his chest.
“I’m not in the mood to keep learning about DNA, enzymes, and monosaccharides” you admit rolling your eyes and pushing your head back in the chair.
“Well, I’m in the mood to teach you anatomy now” Your eyes widen, and you start giggling.
“Fine. But not on the couch. Last weekend Mom was this close to finding my ripped panties under the pillows” Miguel couldn’t help but laugh at your index and thumb almost brushing.
“Don’t worry. I won’t throw away your panties. But for sure I’ll rip them apart”
“See? Cheeky asshole”
“I’m just being honest” You would never get tired of how serious Miguel sounded every time. Even when he was saying nasty things. It was in his nature to be sassy.
“Yeah, yeah. Now take me to bed and do what you’re good at” Carrying you in his arms, he hurried to take you to bed.
He gently placed you over the sheets. And before anything, he made sure to show how much he loved you. By kissing your lips like he always used to.
“Miguel?” You ask suddenly.
“Yes, preciosa?”
“I think I forgot everything about steroids… Oh no,” you want to face-palm yourself.
“It’s okay. I’ll make you remember everything, muñeca” As his kisses traveled through your jaw and neck, you relaxed. Finally, let the heat flow across your body.
“First thing, steroids help growth energy, metabolism, and reproduction, bonita” reproduction, naughty ideas start to cross your mind.
Like the morning your parents left to get some things for a gathering, and he had you sweating and crying under him on your floor carpet. But beyond that, you only have eyes for your Miguel. The only thing you seem to need in life.
Your strong and beautiful geneticist boyfriend.
You are unsure of how you ended up by his side. Dating the infamous Spider-Man, visiting the HQ of the Spider Society, and dealing with everything all together.
And he held you tightly the whole night.
Even when things would change in less than a year. With new piers joining, Miguel growing obsessed with keeping in harmony the spider-verse, grieving his past. And how he would traumatize a teenager in hopes of saving everything. Miguel would see you dying thanks to the spot, and the only way of preventing that was making you a spider too. The changes after that would be big. Even with all of that, both of you thought the same; you were in the correct pair of arms, and hopefully, you’d stay long. If not, forevermore.

If you aren't disgusted by Tumblr's complete lack of basic integrity around selling your posts and blogs to AI companies, the reporting at 404 Media this week should help:
"SocialGist calls itself the 'world’s largest index of human to human conversational content,' advertises access to WordPress and Tumblr including 'posts, comments and likes from the world's most popular blogging platform, including Wordpress.com and popular WP-powered sites around the web,' and on a page outlining its data sources, explains that 'Tumblr is home to over 500 million microblogs generating 1 million posts per day that can provide you with deep insights into the mind and market of Millennials & Gen Z in 2020 and beyond.'"
change your settings and then get off this fucking site

Is Palantir the Number One AI Stock?
$PLTR has been one of the hottest topics this year in the world of finance. It has turned the heads of even the most successful investors following its year-to-date jump of over 200% making it one of the highest-growth stocks in the AI sector. Here I will break down all the key events of 2023 leading to Palantir’s success and potential going into 2024 and why I believe Palantir deserves a place in everyone’s portfolio.
In Palantir’s Q2 earnings report, it reported a net income of 28 million with a year-over-year revenue of 13%. However, things just kept getting better for Palantir in 2023.
In Palantir’s Q3 earnings report of 2023, It announced its earnings with a quarterly profit and a net income of $72 million and a revenue improvement of 16.8% compared to Q3 of 2022 revenue. This earnings report demonstrated Palantir’s potential for profitability and a shift towards more profitable commercial contracts.
In October of 2023, Palantir was included in the S&P 500 index, a massive milestone for every American company. This solidified Palantir’s position at the forefront of the AI sector. In 2023 Palantir’s AIP (Artificial Intelligence Platform) showed great potential and was greatly received by customers. This led to Palantir conducting major collaborations with some of the biggest names in finance. One of which is $IBM. IBM and Palantir collaborated to produce IBM Cloud Pak. This product is aimed at helping businesses with operations and improving efficiency. The IBM Cloud Pak was seen as a very powerful and useful tool for businesses to optimize and can be used in a variety of markets such as healthcare and finance.
Similarly, Palantir collaborated with the giant $AMZN on the AWS sector. This collaboration consisted of Palantir Foundry now being accessible through the AWS infrastructure saving time for businesses to access Palantir making it an even more useful tool for businesses to use giving it leverage over competitors in the market.
Palantir is already collaborating with the NHS to improve efficiency, better patient care, and perform advanced decision-making. This collaboration is a huge label for Palantir due to it being trusted by the UK’s biggest health service, to optimize operations.
Overall, I believe $PLTR is a very promising company in the AI sector and shows great profitability potential. In 2023 Palantir has made major collaborations giving it leverage over rivals and solidifying its status in the world of finance.
