CRAWFORD: (FRI) PACK LOSE TO UTICA IN SHOOTOUT
Tumblr media
Utica Comets 4, Hartford Wolf Pack 3 (SO) BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Utica, NY, November 9, 2018 – The Hartford Wolf Pack saw a 3-1 third-period lead slip away Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Utica Comets. Ville Meskanen scored twice in the second period for the Wolf Pack, who also got a goal in the second from Tim Gettinger.  Lukas Jasek and Petrus Palmu both connected in the final five minutes of the third period to bring the Comets back, though, and Jonathan Dahlen and Michael Carcone had shootout goals. “Three-one lead with five minutes left in the third, there’s no excuse for letting that game slip out of our grasp,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said. The Wolf Pack were outshot 11-6 in the first period, but Hartford goaltender Marek Mazanec (27 saves) held the Comets at bay, despite a two-man advantage for Utica of 47 seconds starting at the 8:46 mark.  That was when Gabriel Fontaine was called for high-sticking, with Shawn O’Donnell already off for slashing. The Comets opened the scoring at the 7:29 mark of the second period, on Zack MacEwen’s sixth goal of the season.  Olli Juolevi got the puck past the Wolf Pack’s John Gilmour at the right point, sending the Comets away on a 3-on-2.  Dahlen carried into the Wolf Pack end on the left side before dropping the puck off for MacEwen in the middle, and he fired a shot past Mazanec on the stick side. The Wolf Pack would get the next three, though, starting at 10:03, just 2:34 after MacEwen’s goal.  That was when Gettinger knifed the puck past Utica netminder Ivan Kulbakov (34 saves), after Michael Lindqvist had a point-blank chance blocked. Meskanen then struck for a pair, the first at 13:55, putting the Wolf Pack in front.  Libor Hajek cut off Kulbakov’s clearing attempt at the right point and snapped the puck at the net, and Meskanen tipped it past Kulbakov’s stick side. With time winding down in the second, Meskanen made it a two-goal Wolf Pack lead with only 17.4 seconds left.  Peter Holland intercepted a pass attempt by Tanner Kero on the right side and left the puck for Meskanen, who one-timed the puck past Kulbakov, with Matt Beleskey screening. The Wolf Pack protected the lead solidly in the third until Jasek cut the margin in half at the 15-minute mark.  Tanner MacMaster dug the puck out from behind the Hartford net and fed across the goal mouth to an unguarded Jasek, who buried it from the left side. Palmu tied the score with 1:27 left, getting his first North American pro point.  Lindqvist’s clearing attempt was blocked by Brendan Woods on the left-wing boards, and he put the puck towards the net.  Mazanec made the save on a deflection by Jonah Gadjovich, but Palmu was able to shove the puck underneath the Wolf Pack goaltender and just over the goal line. The Wolf Pack had a two-minute power play in overtime after Carcone was penalized for tripping as time ran out in regulation, but they couldn’t capitalize, and the game made it to a shootout despite a 10-4 shots advantage for Hartford in the extra frame. In the shootout, both Dahlen and Carcone were able to score on Mazanec, and Kulbakov denied both Wolf Pack shooters, Ryan Gropp and Steven Fogarty. After playing five straight games, and nine of the last 11, on the road, the Wolf Pack are back home on Saturday night, hosting the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:00 PM.  That is “Country Night” at the XL Center, and tickets for all 2018-19 Wolf Pack home games are on sale now at the Agera Energy Ticket Office at the XL Center, online at hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Tickets purchased in advance for kids 12 or younger start at just $13 each, and all tickets will have a $3 day-of-game increase. Season ticket information for the Wolf Pack’s 2018-19 AHL season can be found online at hartfordwolfpack.com.  To speak with a representative about all of the Wolf Pack’s many attractive ticketing options, call (855) 762-6451, or click here to request more info. Talk about being a brick wall at the right time, @tdemko30! Demko’s 48-save effort (and a shutout, no less!) is the most saves by a goaltender, in a playoff game shutout that did not go to overtime. Demko’s impressive performance also makes him the first rookie goaltender to win his first two starts when facing elimination since Jacques Plante in 1953 - that’s 67 years! That’s the stuff, Thatch! #canucks #vancouvercanucks #thatcherdemko https://www.instagram.com/p/CEtIs0Thw4D/?igshid=fg29jslpidov

CANTLON: ZBROVSKIY CUT LOOSE BY THE RANGERS
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - For a second time in two months, the New York Rangers have placed a Russian born defenseman on unconditional waivers in order to terminate their contract. Last month, Alexei Bereglazov was cut loose and on Thursday, after clearing waivers, it was Sergey Zbrovskiy. He wasn't available long as he signed a two year deal with HK Sochi (Russia-KHL). This is part of the plan the Rangers have had since announcing their rebuilding plans in February. They are starting to clear contracts and personnel space as they enter the NHL Draft this weekend and free agency period that begins on July 1st. The moves that are happening and will be happening over the course of the next few days will alleviate the glut of defenseman as several new names will be coming on board. Zbrovskiy played ten games with the Wolf Pack on injury recalls. He had no points, earned 10 PIM and was a plus-one. He spent most of the year with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, who were the Pack’s (ECHL) Double AA affiliate. While there, Zbrovskiy skated in 47 game amassing 17 points on 5 goals and 12 assists. He was a minus-10. The Russian d-man is a former third round pick (79th overall) in the 2015 draft. He came to the organization after playing at Regina (WHL) for three seasons under the tutelage of former Wolf Pack coach, John Paddock. ___________ The AHL-to-Europe list added five more names this week. The Sound Tigers lost goalie Kristers Gudlevskis, who heads back home to play for Dynamo Riga (Latvia-KHL). Charlotte says goodbye to Sergei Tolchinsky who signed with CSKA Moscow (Russia-KHL). Two players are heading to the KHL to play for Barys Astana (Kazakhstan). The two players are RW Patrice Cormier (Manitoba) and Curtis Valk (Springfield), who dominated the Wolf Pack over the last two years. Another Springfield Thunderbird who split the year with Florida (ECHL), and who just played in the Kelly Cup Final, Matt MacKenzie has left to sign with HC Bolzano (Italy-AEHL). Those moves make it 30 players and one coach to make the move East. So far, 17 AHL teams have lost at least one player. One more collegian has left school to sign in Europe. Landon Smith of the Quinnipiac University Bobcats (ECACHL) signed with Karlskrona HK (Sweden-Allsvenskan) making 20 collegians that have signed in Europe. Bo Brauer of Notre Dame (Big 10) signs a contract with the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) making 206 total collegians to sign pro deals in North America and Europe. Two others have transferred to Canadian colleges since the US college regular season ended. Ex-Sound Tiger defenseman, Cole Jarrett, leaves the Belfast Giants (Northern Ireland-EIHL) to play with the Braehead Clan (Scotland-EIHL). One player thought to be heading to Europe was Utica goalie Richard Bachman, however, he decided to stay and signed a nice deal to stay with the Comets. Vancouver signed Bachman to a two-year, two-way deal earning him $650K at the NHL and $275K if he plays in the AHL in the first year. He makes $700K in the NHL and the same $275K for playing in the American League in the second year. Former QU Bobcat goalie, Mike Garteig, is now fifth on the Canucks goalie depth chart. He sits behind Jakob Markstrom, ex-Sound Tiger, Anders Nilsson, prized prospect, Thatcher Demko, and Bachman. Toss in the team is paying off $800K per year of Roberto Luongo’s deal until 2021. Seems like it would make sense for Gartheig to look to get a better deal where he'll get playing time in the AHL at another organization after he was migrating between Utica, Alaska and Kalamazoo the last two years. While hockey has ended here, the regular season is underway in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) the top team currently is the CBR (Canberra) Brave that are led by former UCONN Husky, Trevor Gerling. In eleven games of their short thirty game season, Gerling has nine goals, 16 assists (25 points) which is good for third best in the AIHL. The Brave have a record of 9-2-0-0 for 27 points. Cheshire native, Rob Malloy, is playing in his sixth season in the AIHL. He's only played in just nine games and has four assists. Malloy is presently on the injured list for the fourth place Newcastle North Stars (4-4-0-2-2 18 points). In New Zealand, the NZIHL defending Birgel Cup champion, the Southern (Queenstown) Stampede are coached by Adam Blanchette (Berlin) a Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack alumni like Malloy. Read the full article
