People will go on about how "Katara's story is a tragedy" because she... ended up marrying the guy she loves, having children and grandchildren which she was always excited about and literally becoming a master waterbender and rising to the top of her field as a healer.
Tumblr media
Yes, Katara's story has tragic aspects to it. And there are certainly flaws in how she is written in tlok (Though I will argue that there are actually more issues with how Toph and Zuko are just plopped in there for no reason in later seasons). And her storylines aren't perfect, for example her resolving her trauma around the murder of her mother being more used to prop up Zuko than her own internal turmoil. (Most of TSR is from Zuko's perspective and I hate that actually)
"Katara's story is a tragedy" Why do you have such a hard on for this woman's misery? Let her be happy, man.
You know what gaang girlie's life is an actual onscreen tragedy?
Toph's!
Tumblr media
People will fucking downplay Toph's childhood abuse because she wasn't physically hurt, but her childhood was a never ending carousel of abelism, misogyny, neglect and isolation. The way Toph describes her parent's treatment of her as "pressure and pain" is heartbreaking.
Tumblr media
Toph's only escape was Earth Rumble and earthbending, but despite her skills, she remained the perfect little lady her parents always wanted her to be. She's never known a different life, and she was only able to be her real self in secret.
And when Toph finally opens up to her parents, when she finally lays her real self bare in front of the people who are supposed to love and care for her?
She is met with what may be, in my opinion, the cruellest rejection in the show.
Despite this, even when Toph runs away, she still cares for her parents' approval. Hell, she's even lured into a trap due to her getting a forged letter from her mom and getting excited because it looked like her mom was finally accepting her.
It's also important to note how determined to be self sufficient and to prove herself Toph is. We can especially see this right after she joins the Gaang, where she refuses to participate in splitting with the rest of the group, insisting on "pulling her own weight". This isn't Toph being a brat, or spoilt, this is her wanting to prove that she can handle herself because people have handled and understimated her her entire life.
Eventually, Toph starts to learn to trust the members of the Gaang and this is a step in the right direction. She's literally making friends for the first time in her life I'm so proud of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I was genuinely upset when Toph's life changing field trip with Zuko didn't work out. When Toph was trying to connect with Zuko and he blew her off (I'm not blaming him tho they had shit to do), I couldn't help but remember the rejection Toph suffered from Lao.
Tumblr media
Post canon, Toph continues to try and prove herself, starting a metalbending school and training new metalbenders.
She also reconciles with her father. Not before Lao disowns he rmultiple times and calls her a rude, ungrateful thing. And while he eventually comes to understand Toph and cherish her, that type of trauma sticks with you.
Tumblr media
So it's no wonder really that Toph, someone who went her entire childhood seemingly without even speaking to someone her age, would have trouble forming connections. She has children with two different men, neither of which seem to stick around.
Toph tries to do right by her daughters and gives them the freedom she never got. Sadly, the pendulum swung too far to the other side, since it seems that she started to neglect her daughters, which led to them developing a sleugh of issues of their own.
Toph becomes the cheif of police, which kind of makes sense. Republic City was only slowly emerging as an actual metropolis. Toph took on a role as a protector, and probably as a way to prove herself. But as Republic City grew, Toph probably realised that she became something she hated. A cog in the machine, and started to despise her job.
Tumblr media
Searching for a semblance of the freedom and happiness her travels afforded her in her childhood, Toph leaves the city and takes up the life of a hermit in a swamp. She managed to fix her relationship with Suyin to some extent, but still seems reluctant or simply unable to connect with her daughter or grandchildren. Since she apparently hasn't seen Opal, a grown 20 year old woman since she was a little girl.
On the surface old Toph doesn't seem terribly dissimilar to young Toph, still tough and spunky. But she is more jaded, depressed and pessimistic. She comes out to save Suyin from immediate harm and manages to somewhat reconcile with Lin, but then she fucks right back off to the swamp where she seems to literally hide until Wu and Korra straight up force her to come with them.
Toph's story began with her alone and it seems to end with her alone as well. It's a story of a girl who grew up isolated and handled by others, and was woefully unprepared for the real world, which only jaded her further. She lives with the guilt of fucking up her daughters' lives and a belief in the pointlessness of life.
Tumblr media
Toph started off longing to experience the world and ended up willingly isolating herself from it.
If that isn't a tragedy, I'm not sure what is.
Tumblr media
Mind you, this is not the trauma olympics. I'm not saying that Toph has suffered more than Katara or that Katara's trauma is not as valid as Toph's. Katara and Toph's experiences are completely different, Katara being a victim of genocide and war, Toph being a victim of child abuse. I'm just saying that, objectively, Katara had a happier 'ending' than Toph.

i want to say something thats been bugging me for a while but there was this whole argument about katara and zuko being FUNDAMENTAL in each other's character arc and that baffled me because its simply not true? you can say they play an important role but to say they are fundamental is over exaggerating it. as fundamental at least to me inherently implies they are the foundation for each others arcs. like it got me sooo confused because i in no way see how zuko plays such a role for katara and same with zuko. because did we just forget that uncle iroh is the one thats actually fundamental to zuko? i feel like i never see him get talked about by these "zuko fans" unless its from a book with like one or two short sentences thats very clearly uncle iroh being a stereotypical dad and being like "oh a nice girl maybe good for zuko?" as if he wasn't pushing zuko to bring home a girl and getting him to go on a date with that girl in ba sing se idk to me it reads off as a parent thats just yappin lol
regardless of that though, im still baffled by that. katara isnt fundamental to zuko's character arc, uncle iroh is. zuko isnt fundamental to katara's character arc, her mother is (and i'd argue aang but i feel like that would just cause a shipping mess by even breathing his name lmao) anyways sorry but that still gets me to this day because how utterly confusing i found it. no one was even saying that they didn't play an important (role along with the other characters in the gaang) in each others arcs, it was saying they simply are not fundamental and that, for some reason, made them so mad lol
I'm sorry, anon, but I am saying they were not important to each other's character arcs, and this is taking into account my bias as someone who really likes their friendship. If a character is not around for someone's arc, or on their mind during it, they're not relevant to said arc.
Katara canonically saw him as nothing but the generic face for evil Fire Nation people until their talk in Ba Sing Se - only to then immediately regret her moment of empathy towards him and never mention him again. And as I've already said, that moment meant so little to Zuko that he couldn't even understand why Katara was mad.
They don't start interacting for real until Zuko the second of half of the final season, and they're not friends until the show is TWO EPISODES AWAY from the finale.
In The Southern Raiders, Zuko is basically the guy driving the taxi so Katara goes on her revenge quest. This doesn't hold a candle to the three seasons she spent being supported by the Gaang (or two in Toph's case), always thinking about her family, mainly her mom.
In the Last Agni Kai, Katara is just there to take action when it's time to shout MEDIC! This doesn't hold a candle to Ozai and Azula's shadow constantly hanging over him, Iroh's advice, the memory of his mother, his relationship with Mai, and the simple "Maybe we could have been friends" from Aang that was canonically haunting Zuko for months because it got to him that much.
Now, do I think it's possible, and very likely, that they will be very important in each other's lives from that point onwards? Of course! They ARE friends now, and if someone is in your life they're gonna play some kind of role when you're going through stuff. It's only natural.
But in the actual canon events? No, they were not important to each other's arc. They didn't have the opportunity to be - and that is part of why I wish the show had 4 seasons instead of 3, or that the comics had not sucked. It would've been so nice to see Aang not be the only member of the Gaang that plays a major role in Zuko's arc, and vice versa (especially with Toph, not only because I love their friendship but because she was denied a life-changing field trip).

Zutara only works with aang.
Zuko getting hit by azulas lightening because he jumped infront of katara is Enhanced by katara being reminded of when Aang died.
Southern raiders aka zuko and kataras life changing field trip works because Aang talks with her before and after the trip.
Zukos redemption works because aang said "do you think we could have been friends hack then" and because of zuko and katara talking underneath ba sing se.
Basically what I'm saying is that polyamory is the way due to the fact that their character arcs are all tied to eachother and they are when it comes down to it the real main focus/perspective characters of atla (sorry sokka, Toph and suki)
Of course this is all mostly going with the assumption that shipping is based on canon and ones interpretations of canon. I know that many ship zutara in their own version of atla they've made in their head which is their right of course.
With me it's because I love atlas own canon and want my ships to be slotted right into it.

I don't think Sokka or Katara would know swears either; they grew up in a village consisting of them, Gram Gram, and a bunch of little kids and their moms
I don't know if the airbenders taught aang swears or not but I know he's not really the type to swear anyway
Zuko, on the other hand, spent about 3 years of his life as a young angry teenager surrounded by sailors
I know we all know that toph loves to cuss, but I just realized
She had an extremely sheltered upbringing, then when she snuck out to fight, she went to the Earth Kingdom version of WWE, which, if it's like real world WWE, is family entertainment, and she never spent time backstage, she came she fought she left
I don't think Toph knows any swear words

A Life Wasted
Azula Week Day 1: Childhood
Summary: Azula has trouble coming to terms with that she didn’t really have a childhood and struggles to see a future for herself.
She is surprised to get as many visitors as she does, Azula could have sworn that they would stick her in this horrid place and forget all about her, leaving her to her own nightmares and personal horrors. Somehow they don’t forget her. Somehow they find it within themselves to pay her visits now and then. Sometimes they come with specially prepared meals other times they come only with stories and company.
Azula wishes that she could appreciate it. Wishes that she could push her resentment aside. She wishes that they would just leave her to suffer and fester in her shame alone. It is bad enough having them around to see her like this, to make their judgments. But they have to bestow her with stories about how great the outside world is, about how they have all accomplished so much.
They do so until she one day snaps at them to stop bringing her news. She expects them to stay away from then on out. Instead they come back with tales from the past.
TyLee’s childhood is bathed in shades of pink. She was never alone and was constantly at the tailend of a braid chain. She always speaks of laugher and gossip and trips to the berry fields. Of coming home with smeared cheeks and stained clothes.
Mai’s childhood was more subdued, lonely. But when her parents came home it was warm. They would take her onto their laps and read her stories about dragons and courageous Fire Nation warriors until she begged for a blade of her own.
Katara and Sokka both have frosty and cold childhoods but in the most dreamy way. They both recount different aspects. Sokka tells her about fishing and hunting trips with his father; about adrenaline spikes and hiking around glaciers. While Katara paints a more domestic image in her mind; the smell of cooking fish and firepit smoke. Of heavy coats and fur rugs.
Toph’s childhood was sheltered but exciting when she could sneak away. It was full of adventure and mess. Of tussling with the boys in alleyways and knocking on strangers’ doors and running before they can get to the door.
Aang’s was serene. Otherworldly and mystifying. His childhood makes her stomach ache with longing the most. He speaks of how all of the children were raised side by side. Every adult was a mother and a father to all of them and each child was a sibling to the next child over. Before he found out that he was the Avatar he was never alone. He would munch on pastries and and have glider races.
And Zuko’s...she knows about Zuko’s and she doesn’t want to hear anything of it. It is as unforgiving as her own but in such a different way.
She wishes that she could have had a childhood. Maybe she wouldn’t be this way if she did, if she had been allowed to be a child for just a few years before being thrust into the war machine. Maybe if she had hours of running wildly through the palace garden instead of hours of training and katas she would be less of a weapon and more of a human being.
She stares at her palms, trying to recall even one moment where she had been a child. Just one that isn’t tainted by undertones of political speak and warfare. But she can’t find even one. Even her fondest childhood memories are either followed by something awful or had war in the background.
On one occasion, a golden day on Ember Island--she had convinced Zuko to help her swipe some mangos from a fruit cart just to test their skills. They had snatched one and darted off to climb a palm tree and hide as they tasted their prize. Father found them with sticky mango juice smeared around their mouths and dripping down their chin. That evening they were dirty, disgusting miscreants and he was ashamed to be their father. That night there was no trip to the beach to collect shells and build sand castles, they were locked in their rooms listening to mother and father argue; “they’re children, Ozai! Children do that stuff, let them have fun!” “They have duties to their nation, they are better than other children.” Zuko blamed her for getting them in trouble with her stupid idea and she blamed him for talking too loud and getting them caught.
On another occasion she found herself sitting at the edge of the turtle-duck pond, kicking her feet at the shimmering waters, the sun reflecting on its surface. In one had she held a calligraphy brush which she was using to paint random doodles on her legs. In the other she held a loaf of bread which she was biting into, paying little mind to where she was nibbling on it. She was quite and out of the way so no one paid her any mind. Which is probably why they so openly discussed how triumphantly they had slaughtered Earth Kingdoms soldiers on the battlefield.
Such are the types of memories her childhood is sprinkled with. And the more she thinks on it, the more she realizes how truly and deeply imprinted the war is on her mind. She doesn’t think that she knows anything else but battles and punishments.
She remembers when her mother stopped loving her. When the woman realized that her baby had already been claimed by propaganda and a sense of patriotic superiority. Azula wishes that the woman would have done something more to keep her from succumbing. From falling so deep into the indoctrination.
She remembers when mother had told her that Lu-Ten had died. That was the night that mother stopped loving her. When mother realized--before anyone else--that something was very wrong with her. That was the night when her father had told her just how proud he was of her.
She was finally the weapon he had been craving.
And now she is broken. The remnants of a once mighty war machine. And in a world without war, she doesn’t have much use. She supposes that it is just as well that she is stuck in this institution. She can’t see herself doing anything anyways. Can’t seem to think up any other purpose for herself.
They mistake her low for recovery. She no longer yells and screams and demands that Zuko and his friends be sent away. She is simply indifferent, it doesn’t matter if they are there or if they aren’t. It doesn’t matter if their happy childhood tales make her tummy tingle with sorrow and longing. Nothing matters. She doesn’t matter.
She had wasted her childhood. Now she is wasting her adolescence. Her life is a waste…
Zuko grips her shoulder. Her blank eyes don’t lift from her palms. Not until he helps her stand and leads her out of the institution. She questions his decision but decides that she can’t be bothered to stir up any trouble anyways, so his decision won’t really leave an impact either way.
“I think that it’ll be good for you to get some fresh air.” Zuko comments. “We’re planning on taking a trip to Kyoshi Island and I thought that you should come with us.”
She furrows her brows, “why would you think that?”
He shrugs. “I guess that I want us to both have a few memories that are just...nice.”
She doesn’t think that this is it.
“We can’t exactly make good childhood memories, but we can do this.”
Azula nods.
“I also thought that it would be good for you to start to...get back into the world so you don’t fall behind.”
“I already have.” She mumbles.
He gives her back a little rub. “You’re not too far behind. Nothing we can’t catch you up on. And besides, we’d like your input on certain things. There’s this new city in the making and we think that you’d be good at helping us plan and fine tune it. You’re good with details.”
“What does that have to do with Kyoshi Island?”
Zuko laughs, “nothing. Kyoshi Island is just going to be a break before we really get into it.”
“I’ve already had a break…”
His smile falters but only for a moment. “I guess that you have. But I’m talking about a real break, Azula. Something that could be fun for you if you’ll give it a try.”
She supposes that, at this point, she is willing to try anything to get rid of the despair and helplessness that has taken root within her soul. “It would help more if I can just have a look at this city. I need something important to do. Something that matters.”
“You will be doing something that matters on Kyoshi Island.”
“Oh.” She quirks a brow.
“You’ll get to have a good time and learn about some new cultures. And you’ll get to watch me struggle with awkwardness. The last time I was on Kyoshi Island I...did some things…”
“How is that important?”
“Because it’s about your health and you matter. You know that, right?”
“Important to who?”
He gives her a gentle hug. “Believe it or not, you’re important to me. And as soon as the others see that you’re not a completely mean and angry person…”
“I’m not angry.” She thinks that she has only ever been angry once, during the comet. Mostly she is just numb and unfeeling. Cold. And maybe that is worse than having a temper. At least a temper can be cooled…
“Trust me, this is going to be good for you. I can’t fix our childhood bet we can make something of the future.”
She doesn’t know if she believes him, but she would like to. At least she is out of that facility. At least she can get back to firebending and relish in freedoms to be rediscovered. He smiles again and she decides that the least she can do is humor him. Either nothing will change at all and she will continue on in her melancholy or he will be right and she will pave herself an adulthood that is warmer than her childhood ever was.

Hi! I’ve just found your blog and will you marry me?!? AANG CONTENT?!?? ! I saw the requests open and if you’re still open for them could I request a Zuko x reader? Zukos been awed by readers sheer power over and over cus he’s a sucker for strong women. And when he joins the gaang he is soo smitten with the reader and every one sees it but the oblivious reader. And he enventually asks for everyone’s help but during the ember island play she finds out cause they over dramatize his big crush?
Awww! We should probably meet before getting married lol  Sorry for taking so long with the request, life has been kicking my butt. Here you go! c:
As a former citizen of a small village in the Earth Kingdom, you always longed for adventure and there weren’t many ways to leave your family farm. Or at least not without having to take something from them, and you had refused to. You knew they had little enough already.
But it was different one day, after meeting the avatar himself and his friends. As an earthbender, you weren’t sure where you could go but you wanted to go everywhere. And if you could beat up some Fire Nation soldiers, then you would be having the time of your life.
You had gone into the market for some feed for the lone ostrich horse, and a few of the Fire Nation soldiers had caught wind of the avatar. You were sure that he could actually take them down himself, but you weren’t exactly going to test that theory, and you trapped them in pillars of earth before helping the group out of the market and towards your family farm.
That was how you had met them anyway, and you had asked to join them that day. You hadn’t exactly expected them to say yes either, but they had, and you were overjoyed. So were they, but you assumed that Katara was more or less just glad to not be the only girl there.
Shortly after you joined however, the adventure you always wanted seemed to be a bit much at times.
First, there was the general that actively tried to get Aang into the avatar state and had put all of you in danger for it. Then there were the nomads that you had wanted to leave in the tunnels, you couldn’t believe how carefree they could be in the middle of a war. Even after all that your group had done to get into Omashu, you all found out that the Fire Nation had overtaken it and that Aang had to find an earthbending teacher himself. You offered, but you still had much to learn for it yourself.
And your least favorite place happened to be the swamp. Everyone there had visions of some person they already met and lost or in Aang’s case, were going to meet. You however, had a vision of your family. You had left them, and who knows if you would see them again, but you kept reminding yourself that it was okay, and they understood why you did.
The next place was some odd avatar-hating village, and Aang got arrested. But it was okay, because the day had ended with him out of prison, you beating up some soldiers, and some weird dough-like thing that you immediately spat out after tasting.
In another Earth Kingdom town, your group had gone to an underground earthbending tournament which you had a blast watching. You had wanted to participate as well, but ended up following the rest of them as they looked for the Blind Bandit. The day went well, considering Aang had managed to get an earthbending teacher and so had you, despite her parents originally saying no. You had assumed that her parents never changed her mind like she said, having done the same thing with your own.
After Toph had joined, there was a strange metal contraption constantly following them by way of Appa’s fur trail. It had turned out to be the Fire Nation princess herself, and her two nonbending but still dangerous friends. You had helped Sokka and Katara with the other two that you had yet to learn the names of, while Aang was dealing with the last one. There was a fight because of course there was, you were starting to wonder just how many more fights you would have to go through in this. That was not to say you didn’t like to fight. You excelled at it.
That had also been the first time you had actually met the Prince Zuko that had literally followed them around the nations, and the first thing you wanted to know was where his ponytail had gone. Sokka had made sure to tell you all about it, but had left out the fact that he could actually be considered attractive, not that you would say that part out loud, and especially not when he was your enemy as well.
You had definitely been thrown for a loop when Azula had shot Iroh with lightning, only for Zuko to refuse help from any of you, even though Katara would have been the only one able to actually help.
Your second least favorite place was the desert, even though you thought the library had been amazing, apart from Wan Shi Tong getting upset that you guys had actually only come to learn how to defeat the Fire Nation. But Appa had gone missing, and you were absolutely convinced none of that was Toph’s fault. Another part of the desert that you didn’t like much were the buzzard wasps, but at least you had begun learning how to bend sand, which was definitely odd.
On your way to Ba Sing Se, they ended up meeting a few old friends of theirs, the Kyoshi Warriors and you had been quick to introduce yourself as well. Mostly since you had grown up hearing about them, and how amazing they would be, you really aspired to be more like them.
Of course, the ticket lady wouldn’t let any of you get onto the ferry without passports, and Toph had managed to get all of you, only for the group to go the other route to Ba Sing Se when a pregnant lady and her husband had mentioned that their things were stolen. The Serpent’s Pass, you thought was aptly named when going through it. The serpent was terrifying, and you severely hoped that you wouldn’t have to go that way again.
But at least you had made it through before Ying had her baby, which you thought was surprising considering she was quite far along. She asked you if you wanted to hold her, and you declined, having held more babies in your life than you probably would have liked, not to mention you hadn’t particularly wanted to hold any more. At least for now.
The new family had separated from you and your own group when you finally reached Ba Sing Se, only to find out that the Fire Nation trio was back again and they were trying to take down the wall with another metal thing. You had been helping Toph and Katara bend the awful rock and water combination and successfully kept a few of them back that way.
Ba Sing Se was a horrible city in your opinion, the Dai Li only being a part of it, but you were having a big issue with how the poor had less opportunities and the like.
You were partially glad when you left with the group, but heavily concerned for the avatar you’d come to think of as a younger brother. He had been shot with lightning and actually died, it was a miracle when Katara had healed him.
The weeks passing seemed to grow longer and longer, and nobody said it but everyone could tell that there was a lot of concern and worry for Aang when he hadn’t woke up. You spent your days learning how to bend metal like Toph, and it had taken you a while to even start.
Once he was awake however, you had to leave the boats you’d grown somewhat accustomed to and wait for the solar eclipse to grow nearer.
Unfortunately where you had to wait happened to be in the Fire Nation itself, and you hadn’t exactly wanted for more red in your wardrobe but it couldn’t be helped.
The next month or so, you weren’t sure how long it actually had been and couldn’t be bothered to remember, Katara had helped a coast village with its sick by posing as a river spirit and had even blown up a Fire Nation factory with Aang and finally scared the soldiers away from the town by continuing the ruse. Sokka had acquired a master of his own and made his own sword out of a piece of rock that fell from the sky. Toph had been scamming people in town, occasionally with your help but you ended up stopping when you thought that it would be too obvious. Katara had ended up finding another Southern Water Tribe bender, but unfortunately due to decades of being in prison had gone mad and had been kidnapping innocent people and trapping them under a mountain.
Hama had actually terrified you more than anything else had, but you couldn’t help but pity her at first. Your empathy had been shut off when you saw how Katara had to bloodbend her that night, and how upset she was.
The day of the invasion had been off to a good start, but it had been cut short when everyone learned that the Fire Nation already knew of the solar eclipse and had planned for it.
All of you had regrouped, apart from the adults that had gotten arrested for being a part of the invasion, and had gone to the Western Air Temple. Having never gone to any of the air temples yourself, you had quite a bit of fun exploring this one.
When the prince himself appeared and offered to be Aang’s firebending teacher, you wanted to throw a rock in his face and probably would’ve, had anyone else started a fight. It had been his choice to join his sister in Ba Sing Se, and now he wanted to join the group that he’d been chasing this entire time? Needless to say, you held a grudge against him, and you wouldn’t hesitate to earthbend him to the edge of the cliff if he tried anything.
The next day however, Toph returned with burned feet and Zuko had come back yet again. After his apologies, Aang had accepted him as his firebending teacher shortly after that.
It seemed like everyone but the ones that could earthbend had gone on a field trip with him, oddly enough, when Aang and Zuko had gone to learn real firebending, then it was Sokka and Zuko apparently breaking Hakoda and Suki out of prison but they also brought back a prisoner named Chit Sang too. Then it was Katara’s turn, and she went with him to confront the man who killed her mother. Thankfully, she hadn’t killed him.
Instead of camping out, Zuko had offered up a new place to sleep at, and it was a house that apparently no one goes anymore. You were a little weirded out at the thought of it, and Katara thought so too.
“Doesn’t it seem weird that we’re living in the Fire Lord’s own house?
“I told you, my father hasn’t come here since our family was actually happy. And that was a long time ago. It’s the last place anyone would think to look for us.”
“True, but still weird.” You piped up, doing your own stretches as the two firebenders had finished with their training.
“You guys are not gonna believe this. There’s a play about us.” Sokka said, walking out onto the courtyard with Suki, holding a rolled up poster, looking awfully smug.
“We were just in town, and we found this poster.” Suki continued, while Sokka rolled out the poster and held it up so all of you could see it.
“What? How is that possible?”
“Listen to this.” Sokka started, before beginning to read off the poster itself. “The boy in the iceberg is a new production from acclaimed playwright Puan Tin who scoured the globe, gathering information on the avatar from the icy South Pole to the heart of Ba Sing Se. His sources include singing nomads, pirates, prisoners of war, and a surprisingly knowledgeable merchant of cabbage.”
“Brought to you by the critically acclaimed Ember Island players.” Suki finished, before Zuko began to groan.
“Ugh. My mother used to take us to see them. They butchered “Love Amongst the Dragons” every year.”
“Sokka, do you really think it’s a good idea for us to attend a play about ourselves?”
“Come on, a day at the theater? This is the kind of wacky, time-wasting nonsense I;ve been missing.” And with that answer, you all headed out to the theater to see whatever play this would end up being.
Upon arriving, you all settled down into the seats, Katara sitting next to Toph and you sitting next to her, much to Aang’s disappointment, you were sure. You expected Aang to just sit down next to you, but no, Zuko had.
“Why are we sitting in the nosebleed section? My feet can’t see a thing from up here.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll tell your feet what’s happening.” Katara answered to Toph, while your gaze was awaiting on the curtains.
They opened to show what was supposed to Katara and Sokka on a boat in the sea, back in the South Pole you assumed. You almost laughed at Sokka’s excitement to notice the two when he grabbed his sister’s shoulder and pointed from each other back and forth.
“Sokka, my only brother.” The fake Katara let out a sigh, dramatically gesturing to the painted “ice glaciers” on her side. “We constantly roam these icy south pole seas, and yet, never do we find anything fulfilling.”
“All I want is a full feeling in my stomach. I’m starving.” ‘Sokka’ responded, making the real Katara and Sokka give each other a look as the audience burst into laughter.
“Is food the only thing that’s on your mind?”
“Well, I’m trying to get it out of my mind and in my mouth. I’m starving.”
“Is that all that guy says?” You grimaced, starting to dread when your character showed up.
“This is pathetic. My jokes are way funnier than this.” Sokka exclaimed, while Toph laughed at him.
“I think he’s got you pegged.” With that, the rest of you turned back to the play.
“Every day, the world awaits a beacon to guide us, yet none appears. Still, we cannot give up hope, for hope is all we have and we must never relinquish it, even. . . Even to our dying breath.” Fake Katara began to sob, and you drew in a breath through your teeth when Katara crossed her arms.
“Well, that’s just silly. I don’t sound like that.”
“You have your moments.” You admitted, but even you would agree that this was an exaggeration for sure.
“Oh man, this writer’s a genius.” At least Toph was having fun.
“It appears to be someone frozen in ice, perhaps for 100 years.” ‘Katara’ said, when a light shone down onto a floating iceberg.
“But who? Who is the boy in the iceberg?” Fake Sokka asked, the two climbing up the iceberg.
“Waterbend, hi-ya!” Fake Katara cried out, drawing her hand down as if to actually crack the ‘iceberg’ herself, only for it to break and reveal fake Aang, whose actor was a girl apparently.
“Who are you, frozen boy?
“I’m the avatar, silly, here to spread joy and fun.” ‘Aang’ giggled, and you looked to the avatar himself, only to see him frowning deeply.
“Wait, is that a woman playing me?” He asked, right as a fake Appa showed up and went around the iceberg in a circle while fake Katara gasped.
“An airbender. My heart is so full of hope that it’s making me tear-bend.” She began to fake sob, falling to her knees and grabbing onto fake Aang’s leg.
“My stomach is so empty that it’s making me tear-bend.” Fake Sokka cried out, falling to his knees as well and grabbing onto ‘Aang’s’ other leg. “I need meat.” With that, you really couldn’t help but laugh, even when both Katara and Sokka were beginning to glare at you.
“But wait! Is that a platter of meaty dumplings?” The actress for Aang mentioned, pointing up at nothing in particular.
“Ooh, where, where?” ‘Sokka’ quickly asked, only for ‘Aang’ to start laughing.
“Did I mention that I’m an incurable prankster?”
“I don’t do that. That’s not what i’m like. And I’m not a woman.”
“Oh they nailed you, Twinkletoes.” Toph joked, laughing at the play as she basically had been this entire time.
A new boat showed up on the stage, this time carrying Zuko and his uncle.
“Prince Zuko, you must try this cake.” ‘Iroh’ offered, while fake Zuko was looking out at sea with a telescope.
“I don’t have time to stuff my face. I must capture the avatar to regain my honor.”
“Well, while you do that, maybe I’ll capture another slice.” Fake Iroh said, before literally shoving the cake into his face and eating.
“You sicken me.” ‘Zuko’ said, with a disgusted look on his face, and you let out a laugh.
“They make me look totally stiff and humorless.”
“Actually, I think that actor’s pretty spot-on.” Katara joked, and Zuko had been quick to turn to her.
“How could you say that?
“Let’s forget about the avatar and get massages.”
“How could you say that?” Fake Zuko cried out at Iroh’s suggestion, only for you to laugh when you saw the look on Zuko’s face.
The scene panned out to show Aang the actress at the Southern Air Temple, with a tail sticking out of the fake bushes.
“Hey, look! I think I found something.” Fake Aang kept digging into the bushes, only to come back out with a fake puppet of Momo on his shoulder and a fake arm hanging from his side. “A flying rabbit-monkey! I think I’ll name him Momo.” He laughed, before moving the puppet so it would look like it was talking.
“Hi, everybody. I love you.” At the sight of it, both you and Aang let out a low groan. Momo did not deserve this slander.
With another scene, it showed a Kyoshi Warrior, which you assumed was supposed to be Suki before ‘Sokka’ came out, dressed in the same Kyoshi Warrior ensemble.
“Does this dress make my butt look fat?” He said, making the real Suki laugh, as you turned to look at the couple.
“So nobody told me you were a Kyoshi Warrior? I do have a question though. Did you look as good as Suki does?” You couldn’t help but tease him, although this was definitely bringing up some topics that you had missed out on.
The scene changed yet again, but this time was showing what was supposed to be King Bumi. Was he really that buff?
“Riddles and challenges must you face if you are ever to leave this place.” It showed fake Aang pushing a boulder, fake Sokka running from a gorilla rabbit, and fake Katara groaning as she was trapped in crystals.
It cut to a different part of the play, showing a pirate boat and pirates began to surround the trio. The pirates continued to fight each other as the trio actually got out quite safely.
“Why did you have to steal that waterbending scroll?” Fake Sokka asked as they crept away from the pirates.
“It just gave me so much hope.” Fake Katara answered, sobbing yet again.
“I really hope my character isn’t as bad.” You added, wearing a grimace, since you knew Katara didn’t cry nearly as many times as this one made her out to be like.
“The avatar is mine!” Fake Zuko cried out, while fake Aang was chained to a wall with soldiers surrounding him. “Wait, who’s coming?” He pointed to a different part of the stage where a person with a large blue demon-like mask held dao swords.
“I am the blue spirit, the scourge of the Fire Nation, here to save the avatar.” He exclaimed, before the soldiers began to drop to the ground dramatically and he somehow defeated fake Zuko as well as simultaneously untying fake Aang.
“My hero.” ‘Aang’ said, before leaving the stage with the blue spirit.
The scene changed, and it showed a sobbing ‘Katara’ with a fake Jet, hanging from a rope.
“Don’t cry, baby. Jet will wipe out that nasty town for you.”
“Oh, Jet. You’re so bad.” Toph laughed, while Katara tried to hide her face, and you just lightly patted her shoulder with a slight look of pity.
“Look! It’s the Great Divide. The biggest canyon in the Earth Kingdom.” Aang mentioned, standing atop fake Appa.
“Eh, let’s keep flying.” Fake Sokka shrugged, while you only leaned back into your seat.
“Don’t go, Yue. You’re the only woman who’s ever taken my mind off of food.” The two actors dramatically kiss, before fake Sokka turns away with a gag. “Wait, did you have pickled fish for dinner?”
“Goodbye, Sokka. I have important moon duties to take care of. And yes, I did have pickled fish.” Fake Yue said, going up into the sky with the moon.
“You never told me you made out with the moon spirit.” Suki chuckled, and you glanced at the couple to see tears in Sokka’s eyes as he shushed her.
“Shh, I’m trying to watch.” Turning back to look at the stage, you saw the actress for Aang in a fish spirit costume, crushing fake fire Nation ships.
“The avatar is back to save the day! Yay!” He said, kicking and stomping on the rest of the fake ships before falling onto the floor as the curtains closed.
“So far, this intermission is the best part of the play.” Zuko mentioned when all of you sat on the steps outside of the theater.
“Apparently, the playwright thinks I’m an idiot who tells bad jokes about meat all the time.” Sokka angrily shoved jerky into his mouth, as Suki teased him.
“Yeah, you tell bad jokes about plenty of other topics.”
“I know!”
“At least the Sokka actor kind of looks like you. That woman playing the avatar doesn’t resemble at all.” Aang lamented, putting his hands over his head, as Toph shrugged.
“I don’t know. You are more in touch with your feminine side than most guys.” With that, Aang groaned and Katara interrupted when he stood up.
“Relax, Aang. They’re not accurate portrayals. It’s not like I’m a preachy crybaby who can’t resist giving over-emotional speeches about hope all the time.” Everyone had clearly been looking at her but nobody said a word, until she asked. “What?”
“Yeah, that’s not you at all.” Aang backed her up, sitting back down and rubbing the back of his neck.
“Listen, friends. It’s obvious that the playwright did his research. I know it must hurt, but what you’re seeing up there on that stage is the truth.” Toph offered, and you tilted your head.
“Not quite I don’t think, this is definitely exaggerated.”
As the group went back into the theater, the scene was apparently when you had met the group, seeing as it looked like your hometown.
“Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom.”
“I’d better have a look around to see if I can find an earthbending teacher.”
“Hey, is that the avatar? Get him!” A Fire Nation soldier exclaimed, pointing at fake Aang, when fake you appeared on the stage.
“No, don’t take him! I need to leave this town and abandon my family forever!” ‘You’ cried out, fake earthbending the soldiers out before running with the group. “I don’t want to live on this farm anymore! I want to beat up people!”
You grimaced at their portrayal of you, but at least the actress looked somewhat like you, even if the personality was quite a bit off.
“That’s not. . Quite true.” You added, seeing fake you leave with the rest of them.
The scene was changed into another Earth Kingdom town, and you assumed this was where Toph showed up.
“Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom again. So we can find an actual earthbending teacher.” Fake Katara repeated, the four of them standing next to a suspiciously large rock.
“This must be where I come in.” Toph whispered as fake Aang ‘flew’ around the audience with a rope.
“I flew all over town, but I couldn’t find a single earthbending master.”
“Here it comes.” Toph said, leaning forward in her seat.
“You can’t find an earthbending master in the sky. You have to look underground.” Fake Toph was apparently a very large and buff man, throwing the fake rock off stage. Which only caused everyone but Toph to start laughing, yourself included.
“Who are you?” Fake Aang asked, as fake Toph spat away from him, before proudly pointing to himself before beginning to flex his arms.
“My name’s Toph, because it sounds like tough, and that’s just what I am.”
“Wait a minute. I sound like a guy. A really buff guy.” Toph said, already starting to smile when Katara turned to her.
“Well Toph, what you hear up there is the truth. It hurts, doesn’t it?”
“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t have cast it any other way. At least it’s not a flying bald lady.” Toph answered, making Aang frown as you bit back a snicker.
“So you’re blind?” ‘Aang’ asked, waving his hand in front of ‘Toph’.
“I can see you doing that. I see everything that you see, except I don’t see like you do. I release a sonic wave from my mouth.” Fake Toph explained before beginning to scream, causing everyone in the audience to flinch, apart from the actual Toph of course, who only grinned. “There. I got a pretty good look at you.”
The scene changed to show Iroh and Zuko who apparently had long hair now.
“Zuko, it’s time we had a talk about your hair. It’s gone too far.”
“Maybe it’s best if we split up.” Fake Zuko dramatically flipped his long hair as the two actors walked off the stage, only for everyone to come back with fake Azula as well.
“Azula, my sister, what are you doing here?”
“You caught me. Wait, what’s that? I think it’s your honor.” She said, pointing up and everyone in the cast looked away from her as she slipped away.
“Where?”
“She escaped. But how?” Fake Katara asked, and it switched to show Azula and Aang at the wall of Ba Sing Se with the drill.
“If she continues drilling, this wall will come down for sure.” Fake Aang said, throwing a fake rock at her.
“Yes, continue drilling. The city of Ba Sing Se can hide no longer.” Fake Azula said as ‘Aang’ continued throwing rocks, but it never showed how it ended as the scene changed to show a mind-controlled Jet.
“No, Jet, what did they do to you? Fake Aang cried out, dodging as fake Jet swung out with his hooks.
“Must serve Earth King. Must destroy!” He exclaimed as a fake rock fell onto him, before curling up underneath it so his body wouldn’t be showing.
“Did Jet just die?” Zuko asked, as Sokka answered, gesturing with his hands.
“You know, it was really unclear.”
“I have to admit, Prince Zuko, I really find you attractive.” Fake Katara said, now seemingly in the crystal caves of Ba Sing Se as fake you was looking for a way out, hardly paying any attention to the two.
“You don’t have to make fun of me.” The actor said, turning away and then turning back when fake Katara sat down onto the same rock as him.
“But I mean it. I’ve had eyes for you since the day you first captured me.” With that, you noticed the real Zuko and Katara briefly glance at each other with mildly disgusted looks as Aang frowned at the stage.
“Wait. I thought you were the avatar’s girl. And besides I’m in love with someone else.” Fake Zuko then said, beginning to walk away and very obviously looked towards fake you. ‘Katara’ laughed, before starting to say.
“The avatar? Why, he’s like a little brother to me. I certainly don’t think of him in a romantic way. Besides, how could he ever find out about this?” She hugged him, and you looked at the stage in confusion.
“There’s no way you two would do that.” You said, knowing for a fact that Katara was crushing on Aang, and she had already divulged that he kissed her the day of the invasion. “But what I don’t get is why the actor looks at me when he says he’s in love with someone else. What’s up with that?” You questioned, only to get radio silence from everyone there. You shrugged, figuring that you would weasel the answer out of someone later.
“Oh, you’re getting up? Can you get me some fire flakes?” Sokka asked Aang when he walked out of the theater after that debacle. “Oh, and fire gummies.”
“Well, my brother, what’s it going to be? Your nation or a life of treachery?” Fake Azula said, only for fake Zuko to contemplate things.
“Choose treachery. It’s more fun.” Fake Iroh said, drinking some tea as ‘Zuko’ walked over to him and paused.
“No way!” ‘Azula’ yelled before he pushed ‘Iroh’ over onto the ground and headed towards his sister’s side.
“I hate you, Uncle. You smell, and I hate you for all time!” As he left the stage with ‘Azula’, the Earth Kingdom flag fell onto the actor for Iroh.
“You didn’t really say that, did you?” Katara asked, and you frowned when Zuko answered.
“I might as well have.”
The next scene was Ty Lee and Mai taking over Ba Sing Se, only for Aang to appear out from behind the throne.
“Avatar state, yip-yip!” Fake Aang proceeded to be brought up from the stage by a rope as fake Azula appeared.
“Not if my lightning can help it.” A ribbon was thrown at the fake avatar who pretended to be electrocuted and fell to the floor. “The avatar is no more.” At that, the whole audience seemed to cheer, apart from your group.
You stretched during the intermission, thankful to be out of the seat.
“It seems like every time there’s a big battle, you guys barely make it out alive. I mean, you guys lose a lot.” Suki mentioned, only for her boyfriend to quickly respond.
“You’re one to talk, Suki, didn’t Azula take you captive? That’s right, she did.”
“Are you trying to get on my bad side?”
“I’m just saying.”
“Does anyone know where Aang is?” Katara interrupted the couple, and you hoped that the two might finally talk about how they feel.
“He left to get me fire gummies like ten minutes ago, and I’m still waiting.” Sokka complained, only for his sister to turn away from him.
“I’m gonna check outside.” She said, walking out of the theater, as a child dressed up as Aang pretended to fly around.
“Suki, what are the chances you can get me backstage? I got some jokes I want to give to the actor me.”
“I’m an elite warrior who’s trained for many years in the art of stealth. I think I could get you backstage.” And the two walk off, leaving you with Zuko and Toph.
“Well, I think I’m going to go check out how bad Sokka’s jokes are. Maybe you can tell her now.” Toph suggested, before following Suki and Sokka.
“Wait-” But you had cut Zuko off before he could continue.
“Tell me what?” Would someone finally tell you about why fake Zuko looked at you when he said he was in love with someone else?
“I-uh.. The actor wasn’t entirely wrong.” He partially confessed, only leaving you with more questions.
“Wrong about which part?” You simply couldn’t understand any bit of it.
“I’ve kind of been in love with you for a while.” He quickly answered, glancing at you to see your reaction before looking away.
“Wait what-” You said, only momentarily confused before shaking your head. You didn’t exactly understand why, and that’s exactly what you said. “Why? I don’t get it. There’s nothing special or anything about me.”
“You are far from ordinary, Y/N. You’re so strong and-”
“So what you’re telling me, you’re attracted to strong women?” You teased, oddly satisfied upon seeing the light pink of his cheeks as he groaned before letting out a sigh.
“Yeah.” He admitted, before continuing. “I even asked everyone for help with this.”
“Wait, is that why you had told me I was pretty the other day? And why I found flowers in front of my door the next morning?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I thought you were hot when we first met, so we’re even.” You shrugged, looking at him from the corner of your eye.
“Do you still think that?”
“What do you think?” You answered his question with a question, leaning closer to him until your faces were merely inches apart. “Y’know, I started training to get my mind off you.”
Just as your lips were almost touching, you had closed your eyes only to quickly open them and pull away when you heard a wolf-whistle.
“It’s about time!”

if yall can’t tell im doing som part 2′s tonight!! holla
part 1
Tumblr media
“Do you want to go back?”
The Fire Nation capitol was abuzz in the hours before the invasion was supposed to arrive. Zuko was supposed to be hiding in the bunker, where he wouldn’t be found. You were leaving a military meeting of generals who suddenly cared about your opinion, as odd as that was, but Zuko caught you as you left the palace.
“What?” You said, caught off guard.
“Do you want to go back to the avatar?” he asked, and the tone of his voice said that he knew the answer.
And here it was, here was the moment that would change your life. You hated the Fire Nation. You hated keeping up appearances and aiding these old men who wanted nothing but blood from the people of the earth kingdom. You hated being here, away from what felt like the only real friends you’d ever had. Sure, Ty Lee, Mai, Azula, they were your friends, but they weren’t Aang. Katara. Sokka. Toph.
Here it was, the moment to speak your mind.
“No.” And you didn’t take it. Your expression hardened. You couldn’t give him reason to doubt your loyalty.
His grip tightened on your arm and his face got just a bit closer to yours, his voice hushed.
“I’m not asking you as your prince, I’m asking you as your friend. A fellow former outlaw.” Your eyes widened as you caught onto his implication- he was running away, and offering you the chance to come with him. “Do you want to join the avatar?”
It was a small nod, but it was a nod.
“Go to the airfield. Behind the blimps are balloons. All the way on the left, the furthest from the guard shack, there’s a balloon I’ve filled with supplies. Get a pack together and be there before the invasion begins. I’m going to get my uncle and we’ll find you after the eclipse.” Though he spoke fast, and quiet, you caught his words, and raced away.
In the rush of the preparation, and the evacuation, no one noticed the young prodigy hero of the Fire Nation running not toward the exit of the city but instead the other way, to the mountains behind it. If they did, they didn’t question it- obviously you were instrumental to the plans of the Fire Nation.
You were what was considered a wild card.
And yet, Zuko trusted you- in telling you, he admitted that he trusted you not to tell the Fire Nation what he was planning. He knew you wouldn’t blow his cover, and it was clear that he knew you’d come with him.
As the two of you manned the balloon, he told you that his uncle had escaped, but also that Iroh had known your betrayal was coming. Apparently, the prince had talked about you when visiting the prison. That had to mean something.
“Two firebenders, begging for forgiveness, in one day!” Katara shouted, and you couldn’t bear to look her in the eyes. “Zuko, the one who tried to kill us on multiple occasions, and Y/N, who gained our trust for months before turning on us!”
“How could you ever expect us to let you join us?”
You did. And you were right- they did. Even if they weren’t quite okay with it.
Zuko gained their trust thanks to his ability to take a punishment. When they yelled at him, he took it, and didn’t fight back.
You, on the other hand, your winning trait was your honesty. You sat with them, without Zuko, and explained everything.
You had always been in love with him. You’d always been loyal to him, but you could use cowardice as a cover to stay out of his path, because to be in his path would lead to betraying Aang. You told them about the way that he won you over in Ba Sing Se, and how you couldn’t bring yourself to fight him. You told them about how much the Fire Nation disgusted you, and how you took the chance to run with Zuko the second you got it.
As you told them: you wanted to be on their side. But you would always follow Zuko. And now that he was here, too- well, everything worked had out, huh?
Well, one thing hadn’t worked out. Zuko seemed to keep you more as a friend than a partner, which is what you really wanted, though he had no idea. Toph was being the worst about it. She knew exactly how you felt, and too often either made you miserable through pranks in front of Zuko (one very mud-soaked shirt intended to force you to borrow his clothing still made you seethe), or she stuck too close to someone’s side to make you sit beside him. It was the worst thing on earth.
No, the worst thing on earth was that Zuko was oblivious to it all. It wasn’t like this was unrequited- he’d initiated plenty back in Ba Sing Se! But now you’re both traitors to the Fire Nation again and things are so much different?
You were frustrated.
Especially since he was gone, like, all the time, now. First it was Aang, then Sokka, then Katara, and it was like, hey, guys, you all know I have a crush on him, so why are you stealing him all the time?
He made up for it by sparring with you. He did seem to want to spend time with you- like he missed you or something, which was odd, because the two of you had spent every day together all spring and summer, pretty much right up until his little field trips with the rest of the gaang. And yet, at dawn, when none of the rest of them were awake, you and he always went out to the beach and sparred.
His technique was so interesting to you. You were a prodigy, and he wasn’t, you knew that. But your gift was in the martial arts- you just understood the style that firebending was taught within. He, on the other hand, clearly was influenced by Iroh’s world traveling, using firebending as an extension of his body. You caught him, sometimes, doing things that were clearly from other elements. This one wave of fire was obviously a motion straight out of waterbending.
But when you asked him about it, he didn’t really have an answer. He could explain the move, but not why he chose to do it- just that it made sense to him.
That was one thing you loved about him. He wasn’t just a firebender, fire was in his blood. He breathed it, and it breathed back. His fire was raw, and moved with his emotions, with his heartbeat. It was more beautiful, to you, than any of the forms you could do effortlessly, the flying kicks, the spins. His fire was the philosophy, more in his veins than in his mind.
He knew you were staring, he had to. There was no way he could’ve missed the way you stopped practicing to watch him. And yet he kept going, technique after technique, shirtless as he was, he had to know that he was a spectacle. Self conscious and bashful as he was, Zuko knew he was attractive. The little stunt at Emerald Island with his robe proved that. So he had to know-
Didn’t he?
“How’s Mai?” you asked him suddenly, chewing on your lip like it could make you feel less stupid for asking the question.
“Don’t know,” he said, pausing his motions, “she was really upset, after I broke up with her.” Your eyes widened, surprised.
“You broke up with her?”
“Yeah, the day I ran off with you to come here.”
The day I ran off with you.
That had to mean something.

can we get a zuko x reader with the cuddling for warmth trope? for practical reasons, naturally 👉👈
Naturally. Get ready for fluff :))
Preserving Heat
Zuko x Reader
Tumblr media
It was your turn for a life changing field trip with Zuko. You just didn’t expect it to be so damn cold.
Sat under the night sky on the back of Appa, you shivered, the air frigid like ice. It was then you became jealous of your friends, Sokka and Katara with their furs they had in the South Pole, and of Zuko, who seemed immune to the blistering cold. Did Sokka have to deal with numb fingers when venturing to the Boiling Rock? Or did Aang have to meet the last dragons half blue from the icy air? Did Katara have to weather the howling winds that prevented any hope of sleep? And Zuko – Prince Zuko, the ever warm – did he feel any sort of regret coming on this trip with you?
Your thoughts were almost as bitter as the atmosphere itself. Huffing, you curled up further into yourself, trying in vain to conserve what little heat you had. All you could do to distract yourself was think of what you may find ahead.
Being at Ember Island, counting down the days until Aang had to face his destiny, you felt guilt rack your soul more and more each day. Yes, your fight was alongside those you loved and for a noble cause, but you couldn’t help thinking about the people you might leave behind. Your mother was still in Fire Fountain City, where Toph and Katara had pulled the ‘scam of all scams’. Before you risked your life, you wanted to see her.
Zuko jumped at the chance to assist you.
This might have shocked you more a few weeks back, but now the group felt wrong without Zuko; he felt like a friend, an integral member of your found family. Once you dug past the ironically frosty exterior, you found he was an incredibly gentle and funny person. His dry wit, though often unknowingly amusing, always brought a smile to your face. When you would spar, him with his dual swords and you with your longsword, Zuko couldn’t help but hold back, once falling apart when he nicked your cheek, a small cut down your left cheekbone.
(It took an entire day before he would even consider allowing you to forgive him.)
A violent shiver racked your body, bringing you out of your thoughts, though your finger traced the thin scar along your cheekbone still. You whined lowly, pulling your sleeves down to cover your entire hand.
“Cold?”
Zuko. He had been so quiet you could’ve almost forgotten he was there. In his open palm flickered a single flame, basking his face in a serene orange glow. The gold in his eyes was only illuminated more by the fire, revealing a haunting beauty to them – to the scar he bore, born of vengeful flame. Dark hair fell in the way of his gaze, obscuring them slightly, and yet this only made him look better. His cheeks flushed slightly, hand wavering under his face.
You were staring.
Spirits, you were staring.
“Oh!” You exclaimed, sheepish and kicking yourself internally. “Erm, y-yeah. It’s pretty cold.”
And yet now, under his flustered gaze, you already felt warmer. You ripped your eyes away from his, lips pursed as you shook like a leaf in a hurricane. The silence that followed was less comfortable than the previous; you could feel his eyes still on you, like he had something to say, but the words caught in his throat.
“C’mere.”
You turned your head ever so slightly, his words so quiet you thought you’d misheard him. “W-what?”
He huffed, stretching one arm out, inviting. “I said c’mere.”
Swallowing the lump in your throat, you shuffled over, keeping yourself in as small a position as possible, protecting what precious body heat you had. And yet when you leaned into him, you realised none of it was necessary. The boy was literally a furnace. A pleased noise left your mouth, completely unintentional, as you pressed yourself into his side. He tensed, hand hovering over your side, ghosting over it in a way that was so awkward it was cute.
“You can hold me, y’know,” You said, looking up at him from your position, comfy against his chest. “For the sake of preserving heat.”
Zuko cleared his throat, hand now resting on your side, echoing, “Heat. Yeah.”
Content was the only word that could come to mind right now. Laying on the chest of a prince, under a blanket of starlight, atop a flying bison, warm and held, nothing could be better. You brushed a hand against his stomach, giggling as your cold skin met the smallest bit of exposed skin, causing him to stifle a yelp. You almost felt bad, and yet you were so cold and he just happened to be so warm.
You continued your way up his stomach and to his chest, cold hands warming quickly under his shirt. The entire time he was still, tense and watching.
“I can stop if you want me to,” You told him, looking up at him beneath your lashes.
“No,” He shook his head, voice low – hoarse. “Don’t stop.”
With a grin, you trailed your hand all the way up to rest palm flat against his chest, using it as leverage to hold him closer. There was something about making him squirm that you seemed to enjoy, and the fact he seemed to enjoy it too made it all the better. Slowly, you removed your hand, bringing it back to rest in your lap – and you swore you saw his face fall when you did. Instead, you brought it up to his face, thumb tracing along his jawline. All in effort of staying warm, you thought to yourself.
And then everything happened so fast.
His hands cupped your face as he closed the gap between you.
Oh.
Your mind was empty of everything that wasn’t Zuko. This went beyond teasing and flirtation. This was soft and real and warm. His lips were chapped, and yet he was so gentle, the kiss ghosting ever so slightly like he may not have done it at all. You pulled back for just a moment. mouth parted in delicate shock. Beautiful. He was beautiful.
Before he could ruin it, apologise or even take it back, you took your chance, meeting him halfway with a deeper, less careful kiss. Arms looped around his neck, you moved almost onto his lap, a stray hand running through his hair and spirits it was soft. Zuko gasped at the feeling, and you only took advantage of that. It was beyond warmth now; it was pure heat.
And the moment was ended by Appa jerking suddenly in the air, sending the two of you tumbling across his back and out of the kiss. You snorted, covering your mouth as you laughed at the situation, Zuko smiling sheepishly amused.
“That was...”
“Yeah.”
The two of you splayed out on Appa’s back, one hand on his chest, his arm wrapped around you. Who would’ve guessed Prince Zuko was so tactile? Not you until it seemed he couldn’t keep his hands off of you now. Looking up at the night sky, everything felt right.
“So,” Zuko said, interrupting the silence, “I’d say it’s a little too early to take me home to mother.”
You shoved him with a laugh, watching his face beam brighter than you had ever seen it, amused at his own joke. Life changing field trip with Zuko? An unparalleled success.

Azula and Toph and their life-changing field trip
Okay so you know how Toph is the only one not to go on a life-changing field trip with Zuko?
...What if she went on one with Azula?
Azula needs her own Uncle Iroh, but, instead of soft love like Iroh gave Zuko, she needs tough love. So Toph—who is arguably the best people-reader of everyone and so ‘sees’ that Azula needs someone to give a damn about her instead of coddle her—becomes her Uncle Iroh. (And Toph had a convo with Iroh before and got his wisdom—Azula may not want her around, but she’ll be there if she needs her)
They both have unresolved issues with their moms. Azula thinks her mom didn’t care about her. Toph thinks her mom cared too much about her. (And Toph already reconciled with her dad in the comics, but not with her mom—the one who Toph got excited to see when she heard the letter Long Feng had in Ba Sing Se).
Zuko orders Azula to go on a buddy-buddy trip with Toph because, like Iroh said, sometimes the best way to solve your problems is by helping someone else solve theirs.
Azula helps Toph reconcile with her mom in a very Azula-way that doesn’t work out, and she doesn’t understand why. She had the perfect strategy, so why is it taking so long for the blind fool to get it over with? But Azula comes to realize that wounds can be healed, sure, but you can’t rip out stitches. These things take time and care. So Azula stops talking and starts observing, and she sees, over time, how Toph and her mom compromise in order to understand each other better and come to peace with one another.
^^^Azula tries to hide how jealous she is, but Toph can ‘see’ right through her. Azula can never hide anything from the blind earthbender, and it makes Azula feel vulnerable in a way she hates.
^^^Because of her change of heart, Azula loses her firebending. Toph doesn’t know about the dragons, but she does know about the badgermoles. She takes Azula to them, and Toph and the badgermoles help Azula learn that the elements and bending are a way of interacting with the world and not just weapons.
Toph gives Azula advice like she gave Zuko advice at the Ember Island Players. (“Your mom talks about you all the time, y’know. It’s pretty annoying. But also very sweet.” “She despises me.” “Doubt that. She’s just sad.” “Pfft. Hardly.” “I’m serious. She’s not mad at you. She’s just sad that you lost your way.”)
Ozai scarred both of his kids—Zuko just has a scar that’s easy to see. Toph can’t see at all, but she knows that Zuko and Azula were both equally hurt by their father. Zuko just had someone (Iroh) to take him under their wing. Azula had—and still has—no one.
Azula and Toph start to argue but in an endearing way like sisters because their personalities are actually more alike than not, and Azula is baffled by having what feels like a real sibling. Azula has a lot of trust issues, but Toph is literally the most trustworthy person around because she has mastered the art of not ever giving a single damn. She’s like a rock. A foundation. A cornerstone.
They both think they’re more self-reliant than they actually are, but they truly do crave companionship. Toph understands this, now. She didn’t have a real friend until she was 12. Azula is almost a young adult and never had a real friend (that wasn’t forced to be her ‘friend’.)
I think that Toph and Azula would get along so well once they become friends. “Fuck you.” “Fuck you, too.” would be their version of a hug. They both hide their weaknesses and are the ‘strongest earthbender to have ever lived’ and the ‘strongest firebender to have ever lived’.
imo They’re so much more alike than not, and I really, really want them to have a buddy comedy adventure together.

Rambling about Katara and Zutara
Ok so I’m going to kind of just put my two cents out there on this stuff. I joined the ATLA fandom this past summer and just started watching TLOK (my brother and I just finished Book 2 yesterday). This is a hot debate and I just want to ramble on about my opinions on this stuff. A lot of this will focus on Katara’s perspective because I can understand her better than Zuko or Aang due to personal experience. Im just... gonna... get into it now...
I’ll give you some background on me so you guys can understand where I’m coming from. I’m a 15 year old girl with abandonment issues caused by multiple deaths of close friends and family at a young age (my uncle when I was 4, a grandmother like figure when I was 7, my dad’s mum when I was 9 or 10, my great grandma when I was 11, a close friend of my dad’s when I was 13 and many others). I also am the Mum Friend (my friends literally call me “Mum”). I’m the caregiver of the group- the glue, the harmonizer, the therapist, the teacher, the good advice giver etc. (This stuff actually hot me in trouble as a kid and it kind of messed me up). My friends who have seen Avatar have compared me to Katara on multiple occasions and say I’ve got the temperament of a waterbender. You can kind of see where I’d relate, you know?
I do ship Zutara. My brother turned to me during the Book 1: Water- Episode 9~ The Waterbending Scroll and asked, “What if Zuko becomes a good guy and ends up with Katara?” From then on I was on the Zutara hill and I’ll probably die there. It limited ships that I loved from childhood and I thought it would hav been really cool- it would have fit the themes of the show, it would have been a cool thing to see grow and blossom, etc. It had nothing to do with Katara and Zuko being attractive at all- not in the slightest. It also wasn’t me projecting onto Katara. I didn’t really care to notice any major similarities between us until Book Three: Fire- Episode 7~ The Runaway. It was this exchange that changed Katara from my favorite character to someone I could heavily relate to.
Toph: [Sarcasically.] Oh really, Mom? Or what are you gonna do? Send me to my room?
Katara: I wish I could!
Toph: well you can’t! Because you’re not my mom, and you’re not their mom! [Extends her arm at Aang and Sokka, who are sitting on a ledge.]
Katara: I never said I was!
Toph: No, but you act like it! You think it’s your job to boss everyone around, but it’s not! You’re just a regular kid like the rest of us! Stop acting like you can tell me what to do! I can do whatever I want!
I remember bursting out laughing when I heard this. My brother asked me what was up and I paused it and explained that that was a lecture I revived so regularly when I was younger. It really really ended up messing me up. It’s not like I tried to mother anyone- it just happened. I wasn’t controlling it. I didn’t notice I was doing it and I got in trouble. Now things are different and I’ve embraced the fact that I am the designated Mum Freind. Still working on getting over being told off about it in therapy though. Anyway, I think you now can understand where I’m coming from with this “analysis.” Now I’m going to get into it (for real this time lol).
I think I’m going to start with the caregiver stuff. Katara’s mother died when she was very young. It was a very traumatic death. We can infer that Katara blamed herself for this death because the Southern Raiders were looking for the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe- her. That’s a lot for an 8 year old to try to process. Here’s the kicker: I don’t think she ever fully processed it until after Book 3: Fire- Episode 16~ The Southern Raiders. She almost immediately helped her grandmother take up the roll as the woman of the house. She probably didn’t feel like she had anyone to talk to about what she was feeling however true or false that’s what she most likely perceived this to be. When Hakoda leaves for war with all of the men of the tribe, Kanna might be the matriarch and help raise Sokka and Katara but even Sokka admits that Katara became a pseudo-mother for him. Taking care of others doesn’t leave a lot of time to deal with your own issues. Sometimes it feels easier to help others face their demons than face your own.
We continue to see Katara become the glue of the Gaang as the series progresses. She keeps them together in the Si Wong desert after Aang leaves her, Sokka, Toph, and Momo. She’s always the one cooking, cleaning, and mending not because she wants to, but because she knows no one else will do it and it needs to be done. We see her try to coax Toph into helping out around camp when she firsts joins the Gaang. It doesn’t work and this conflict continues for most of Book 2 and the beginning of Book 3. All of this time, she’s making it a point to take care of everyone. When the adults show up after the Boiling Rock, she’s still the one making the dinner and probably does a lot of the other chores as well (except for tea making- this will come into play later).
There’s a running joke about Katara being “Momtara” within the ATLA fandom (more the Zutaraians in the fandom than anything else but it’s a pretty well known concept). We continue to see this when the Gaang is on Ember Island. She brings them all drink during training sessions, watches said training sessions in case someone gets hurt and they need her, wrangles Sokka to the best of her ability, and just generally looks out for everyone regardless of age gap. It’s her natural instinct to be motherly. She retains this quality even after she finds Yon Rha. (Getting closure on her mother’s death doesn’t mean losing what had become a major personality trait).
Let’s unpack that now, shall we? Kya dies and Katara thinks it’s her fault. She doesn’t really talk to anyone about it. A few years later, Hakoda leaves to fight in the war. The Southern Water Tribe recives no letters or news about what happened to their warriors at all. Katara felt like she lost another parent. She nearly says as much during Book 3: Fire- Episode 1~ The Awakening.
Hakoda: You’re taking about me too, aren’t you?
Katara: How could you leave us, Dad? [She attempts to wipe away the tears.] I mean, I know we had Gran-Gran, and she loved us, but we were just so lost without you.
Hakoda moves to comfort her as she turns away.
Hakoda: I’m so sorry, Katara.
Katara: [Embraces Hakoda.] I understand why you left. I really do, and I know that you had to go, so why do I still feel this way? I’m so sad and angry and hurt!
The thing that sets off this exchange is Aang running away for the third time since Katara has known him (the fourth time in Aang’s lifetime). The other times he ran were when confronted by the rude fisherman in Book 1: Water- Episode 12~ The Storm, then again during Book 2: Earth- Episode 11~ The Desert. Aang has a, for lack of a better word, chronic running away problem. I’m not mad at him for it. It makes him an interesting character and shows that he too has flaws (even if they aren’t always addressed but that’s an issue with Bryke). When Aang flys away after waking up during 3.1, Katara is distraught.
Katara: He left.
Hakoda: What?
Katara: Aang. He just took his glider and disappeared. He has this ridiculous notion that he has to save the world alone, that it’s all his responsibility.
Hakoda: Maybe that’s his way of being brave.
Katara: Its not brave, it’s selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn’t he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?
Katara feels abandoned by Aang. This is completely understandable. She has every right to be angry at him and feel sad that he flew away. He comes back every time but I feel like if I were in her position, as much as I’d hope my friend would come back and I’d tell everyone that I knew he would, I’d still be afraid that there was an off chance that he doesn’t. This is a natural human reaction to this situation. People were seemingly constantly fading in and out of Katara’s life and that just wasn’t good for her mental health. It couldn’t have been. This also raises the question of if someone has a very serious fear of abandonment, would it be healthy to be in a romantic relationship with someone who consistently leaves? Personally I don’t think so. Be friends? Sure. Date? I don’t know. It doesn’t quite sit right with me.
Katara probably feels abandoned by Zuko too. During the Book 2 Finale: Crossroads of Destiny, Katara and Zuko bond in the crystal catacombs under Ba Sing Se. They relate over their shared fear of being abandoned by those they love (yes I think Zuko has abandonment issues too- among other issues/fears). When he turns his back on her, she doesn’t live him (obviously). She has cared about him enough up to that point to offer to use what is arguably her most powerful possession to heal his scar. She cares. Because she cares about him then, she is downright livid when he betrays her. (Of course the difference between Zuko and Aang with this is Zuko leaves once and comes back and he doesn’t leave again. Aang leaves and comes back over and over and over again).
Katara: I thought you had changed!
Zuko: I have changed!
Katara carries the weight of his betrayal on her mind until she and Zuko go on their life changing field trip to confront the man who killed Katara’s mother. This was her time to finally get closure. She had probably had these feelings bottled up for 6 years and didn’t act on them. When she finally had the chance, her best friend and brother tried to stop her. She lashed out.
Katara: We’re going to find the man who took my mother from me.
Sokka pauses and stands up, surprised.
Zuko: Sokka told me the story of what happened. I know who did it and I know how to find him.
Aang: Um ... and what exactly do you think this will accomplish?
Katara: [Shakes her head in dismay.] Ugh, I knew you wouldn’t understand. [Begins to walk away.]
Aang: Wait! Stop! I do understand. You’re feeling unbelievable pain and rage. How do you think I felt about the sandbenders when they stole Appa? How do you think I felt about the Fire Nation when I found out what happened to my people?
Zuko: She needs this, Aang. This is about getting closure and justice.
Aang: I don’t think so. I think this is about getting revenge.
Katara: [Angrily.] Fine, maybe it is! Maybe it’s what he deserves!
Aang: Katara, you sound like Jet.
Katara: Its not the same! Jet attacked the innocent. This man, he’s a monster.
Sokka: Katara, she was my mother, too, but I think Aang might be right.
Katara: Then you didn’t love her the way I did!
Sokka: [Hurt.] Katara!
Katara gets a lot of flack for this interaction. She says Sokka didn’t love their mother like she did and Sokka I’d understandably hurt. It doesn’t excuse what she said, but people do lash out when they are feeling a lot of emotions and they get defensive when they feel like they’re being ganged up on or attacked (I myself am guilty of this sort of thing). What Katara said was wrong but I have no doubt in my mind that she didn’t apologize to Sokka when he and the rest of the Gaang arrive on Ember Island later in the episode. She is seen walking over to him after she hugs Zuko.
Zuko and Katara go after Yon Rha anyway. For once in her life, Katara is feeling emotions and no one is trying to get her to stop or to push them aside. She doesn’t have to be constantly taking care of someone so she can focus on herself. Katara trusts Zuko more than I think she realizes. I mean she trusts him with a lot and he follows through on a lot of unspoken/subconscious agreements and promises.
Zuko is looking out for her. Zuko has her back. Zuko is allowing her to feel all of these emotions and work them out of her own accord. Zuko isn’t telling her to feel one way or another. Zuko isn’t going to judge her for whatever she decides to do when they find Yon Rha or what she does in order for them to get to that point. Zuko ensures she gets the closure she feels she needs.
When he sees her bloodbend, he’s surprised, but he isn’t appalled. When he thinks she’s going to run Yon Rha through with a giant shard of ice, he doesn’t try to stop her. He lets her be her. He sees a dark side of her in a way that no one else in the Gaang has seen. It’s strangely intimate. Clearly it has enough of an impact to make her forgive him. She knows he isn’t going to abandon betray her and her friend again.
Once they become friends, and even before that, Zuko starts to help out with small things here and there. We see him making tea for all of the kids at dinner. He tells jokes to make them laugh. He teaches Aang firebending. He goes with Sokka to the Boiling Rock to make sure he doesn’t get himself killed or in a prison cell for the rest of his life. With all of this, “Dadko” is born.
If you strip away Zuko’s anger, he just becomes the awkward-turtleduck-first-time-father that we all know and love. There’s more balance in the Gaang with him there to help and become an “authority” figure with Katara. They become the parents of the other members of the Gaang. It’s an interesting shift in their relationship- enemies to unsteady acquaintances to enemies to frenemies to friends. They’re close enough that they show small signs of physical intimacy and they tease each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also if you look close enough when the Gaang walks into the “seedy Earth Kingdom tavern,” Zuko and Katara appear to be holding hands and are near each other from then until the finale episodes. They are clearly just great friends by the end of the show. I mean Zuko also takes a bolt of lightning to the chest for her...
Zuko doesn’t leave when his life gets difficult- not after he joins the Gaang. He made that mistake once and he won’t make it again. Aang was always part of the Gaang but continued to leave (again, I’m not mad at him for it but he never seems to realize the effect it has on the people around him- especially Katara). Zuko also doesn’t all but forget Katara and continue to run around the world. When Zuko fully decides to stick around, you best believe he is sticking around.
This works really well for Zutara. They’re both each other’s rock. They support each other and help each other in times of trouble. Do they argue? Yes. Is that a normal part of a healthy relationship- romantic or otherwise? Yes. Do they take care of and look out for each other while also not smothering or suffocating each other? Yes. I don’t know about you but this sounds stable and healthy to me. They balance each other out so well (I’m not going to get too into that because if you’re reading this you probably already know with the whole Tui and La, Yin and Yang, Oma and Shu thing).
Now, this is a big deal for me and it makes me furious, but Katara is forgotten by history. She has no statue. She is reduced to a housewife and healer- things our wonderful water feminist was afraid of becoming as an adult. I mean this girl
Tumblr media
This girl
Tumblr media
THIS GIRL
Tumblr media
She becomes nothing but a housewife stuck in a healing hut who gets forgotten by the world and left behind by her family just... let’s all of that happen? Yeah that’s pretty unrealistic. I think about this frequently and with starting TLOK I have formed even more opinions and have a little thingy (I don’t know what to call it) for what happened to her.
Kya II is everything Teenage Katara wanted to do and be before settling down. Old Katara is everything Teenage Katara was so afraid of become reduced to/becoming.
It’s an interesting way to think about it and I thought I’d share. Now if Katara was Fire Lady, she wouldn’t end up like that. She’d have the power to change the world and continue to fight for what she believed in. She could have helped with the trail with Yakone. Katara has so much potential to not be forgotten or brushed aside and somehow it happened. It makes me so sad. The potential Zutara had to make sure Katara had a genuine legacy was right there at their finger tips and they didn’t use it. What a shame. What a shame.
With all of the things I’ve talked about, I just feel like Zutara would have been better for Katara than Kataang was. I think that’s more Bryke not developing the relationship well enough and instead choosing to be sloppy and selfish in the way they structured the relationship. Yeah this is my rambling on about the issue. Hope it was mildly entertaining! If you want me to write something about how Zuko would have benefited from Zutara, let me know!

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Series Finale: Sozin’s Comet
In case you’re finding this post just by browsing the tags I’ve used for this post, this is the Watchathon, a blog where I’m hoping to watch an episode of a TV show every weekday, with a short blog post where I write down my thoughts as I watch. Each new thought starts with a hyphen and a bolded first word.
- Like so. Now that the introductions are over with, it’s time to break that one-episode-a-day rule and finish off Avatar: The Last Airbender with the climactic grand finale, Sozin’s Comet:
Tumblr media
PART 1: THE PHOENIX KING
- Okay, so, Katara in the intro is still saying “He has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone.” I could’ve sworn they removed that part by this point... Maybe that was just something for the DVD?
- I like that the “Previously on” segment is so long. It really emphasizes how much buildup there was to this. How much the Gaang has been through to get here.
- I gotta say, I was not expecting a beach party in this episode.
- Somehow, for reasons I can’t explain because I don’t understand them myself, this ambush from Zuko made the audio of Nicolas Cage saying “Surprise attack!” in Into the Spider-Verse play in my head.
- Zuko’s really lucky that he earned Katara’s forgiveness before this violent pop quiz, seeing as just a half season ago... “You take one step backwards... one slip up... give me one reason to think you might hurt Aang - and you won't have to worry about your destiny anymore. Because I'll make sure your destiny ends right then and there. Permanently.”
- It never occurred to me that we didn’t get details on the war meeting before now.
- I’d bet hearing about this plan is the thing that tipped the scales and fully convinced Zuko to join the Gaang, and prevent the genocide of the Earth Kingdom.
- It’s so nice to see Zuko being welcomed into the group hugs. Especially when it’s Katara who invites him.
- I like that Zuko is teaching Aang to redirect lightning, the same way Iroh taught him.
- Even before it’s made explicit, you can tell that Aang’s uneasy about the idea of killing.
- Toph is just delighting in her role as Melon Lord, isn’t she?
- Someone out there has definitely written an AU fanfic where someone gets killed during this training and it’s Toph’s origin story as the malicious Melon Lord. If not, then I will write it myself, and it shall be the crackiest crack fic that ever cracked.
- Y’know what, I wish Toph could’ve actually gone on a life-changing field trip with Zuko too! Everyone else got one...
- This scene of Sokka climbing into Appa’s mouth is even more uncomfortable once you’ve... well, once you’ve grown up and... Okay, I tried to put it subtly, but I just can’t: Once you’ve been cursed with the knowledge of what vore is.
- Well, there’s a bait-and-switch if I’ve ever seen one: “Azula, you’re the new Fire Lord!” “=)” “But I am now the Phoenix King and still your superior who you will answer to.” “=O”
- Nice to see June and her Shirshu make a comeback.
- Does this mean Aang wasn’t running away on purpose? I honestly thought he was just going to that island to get some alone time, maybe meditate or contact the previous Avatars’ spirits.
PART 2: THE OLD MASTERS
- I’m not sure if this is something I forgot from June’s first appearance, or if it’s actually just never been brought up before, but I didn’t know her Shirshu had a name.
- It’s sweet that Zuko is seeking out Iroh’s help. Even if the method of finding him is, ah, well... unorthodox.
- Even Avatar Roku doesn’t know where Aang is. And here I thought it was some Avatar thing that had never been brought up before.
- It’s nice to see these people make a comeback. Bumi, Piandao, even Jeong Jeong and Master Pakku are here for the finale.
- I am surprised that we didn’t get an interaction between Toph and Bumi, though. The man Aang wanted to teach him Earthbending, the girl who ended up doing it... But I guess there’s only so much time, and I don’t think there’s any scenes that could be deleted to make room for it.
- It seems like Aang is just searching for confirmation of his beliefs, rather than actually seeking wisdom.
- I like that we get to see Bumi taking full advantage of the eclipse to take back Omashu from the Fire Nation, instead of just being told about it.
- It’s nice to see so many past Avatars beyond just Roku and Kyoshi, Avatars that we never heard of before, but now we hear their stories. But all of these past Avatars echo the same sentiment that Aang should kill Ozai, even an Air Nomad Avatar.
- What can I say about this scene of Zuko and Iroh reuniting? Forgive me for echoing a post I made on my main blog, but this is a scene that’s both sweet and sad.
Sad, because Zuko’s abuse at the hands of Fire Lord Ozai left him anxiously expecting furious punishment for crimes much less than what he did to Iroh. He can’t even comprehend the idea that Iroh would forgive him. His expression while apologizing to Iroh clearly shows he’s expecting the worst.
Sweet, because Iroh still loves Zuko like his own son, and doesn’t even need to forgive him because he never felt anger at Zuko’s betrayal: Only sadness and a worry that Zuko had lost his way, truly lost his honor. And Iroh is so clearly happy to see that Zuko has found his destiny, and joined the fight against the Fire Nation.
I could go on and on about this scene... It’s my absolute favorite scene in the whole series and it brings me to tears every single time I see it.
Gosh... it’s gonna be so awkward going back to the jokes and little mundane thoughts after this, isn’t it?
- Okay, I have officially given up on the idea of finding out what the heck this island is.
- I like the smile on Katara’s face, when she’s asked to team up with Zuko and fight Azula.
- It’s nice to know that Iroh will get the opportunity to run that tea shop, even if Zuko won’t be there to work with him.
- Okay, okay, so the island was actually a lion turtle. Frankly, I’ve still got a lot of questions. Even some new ones.
- It’s nice to see that the Netlix subtitles aren’t ALLCAPS anymore.
PART 3: INTO THE INFERNO
- Gotta hand it to the music, it can make even a scene of Azula making a fuss over a non-pitted cherry rather unnerving.
- Azula’s... Azula-ness has gone straight up to eleven with her newfound role. Hasn’t it? What with all the banishments, even banishing the entire Dai Li.
- Sokka, Suki and Toph are the real dream team.
- And we get a great final blind joke!
- I like that we get to see everyone doing their part in this final battle. All the members of the Gaang, even the White Lotus, get their moments to shine.
- The hallucination of Ursa shows that Azula, on some level, has an idea of what’s wrong with her. You can tell that they were thinking of a redemption arc for Azula come Book 4, though I am glad that didn’t happen.
- It’s chilling to see Ozai razing the forests of the Earth Kingdom like it’s nothing. And then to realize that this is what Aang will have to face.
- At first I wasn’t sure what Sokka’s plan was, but now that I see it in action, it’s really creative.
- I like the idea of a final one-on-one Zuko vs Azula duel(...a). It’s been a rivalry since Book 2, and it’s nice to finally see it get settled, even if I can’t imagine it’ll end up that easy: Otherwise, what would Katara do?
- It’s so cool to see Aang showing his prowess in all bending techniques, using them all in this final showdown.
- The background music during Zuko and Azula’s Agni Kai really sells it. It makes it sound almost tragic, and it is: two siblings pitted against each other, no choice but to fight to determine the future of the world.
- Azula might be slipping, but she’s still Azula, all too willing to cheat in what’s supposed to be a one-on-one duel.
PART 4: AVATAR AANG
- Netflix isn’t showing the intro for the individual parts, but I’ve gotta say... There’s no way that Kataras still saying Aang’s “got a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone.” Right?
- I like that we get to see one last use of Metalbending from Toph in the finale.
- Dang, I hope this isn’t really the end for Sokka’s sword, or his boomerang. Especially when the sword was so cool, and one could say meaningful.
- I honestly wasn’t sure the Avatar State would ever be a factor again. But if there was ever a time, this is it. (ADDENDUM: This is probably the best time to clarify that I find and add the images at the start after writing the rest of the post.)
- And it’s so epic to see Aang bending all four elements at once.
- I like that Iroh got to burn down the Fire Nation flag.
- Since Zuko’s down for the count, I guess this means a battle between Katara and Azula, the latter powered up by Sozin’s Comet.
- To be honest, I could barely make out what Azula just said. “kjsdbksrbfkjvf family position to look after, kdcbkfh”?
- Katara may not be stronger than Sozin’s Comet-powered Azula, but she’s much more clever than Azula is right now as she loses her marbles.
- This is just the perfect kind of defeat for Azula. There’s no grace to it, no dignity, just writhing around, screaming and spewing fire as Zuko and Katara look on with pity.
- There’s probably a great practical reason someone could find for Spiritbending being a thing, but here’s why I’m glad it exists: Aang gets a happy ending. He gets to take down the Fire Lord, and hold true to his beliefs. If it weren’t for Spiritbending, if Aang killed Ozai, then he would be conflicted to the end.
And I don’t want that. I want Aang to get an unambiguously, undoubtedly happy ending, where the world is saved and that’s all there is to it.
Plus, Spiritbending is quite the spectacle.
- I’m guessing Sokka’s space sword and boomerang really are done for. But hey, there’s always headcanon. Maybe Sokka searched the forest and eventually found them.
- Weird to think that Ty Lee’s gonna be a Kyoshi Warrior.
- Again, I can’t believe Zukaang’s not the most popular Zuko ship in the fandom. Not a ship I’ll go to bat for, but it’s got all the hallmarks of a fan-preferred couple.
- It’s so nice to see Zuko’s coronation, and the official end to the war. It’s a happy ending for the whole world, the start of an era of peace.
- “Love and peace,” huh...? Now that’s funny to hear in the finale to this show, considering the next show I’m covering, come 2021...
- I like that we get to see one last confrontation between Zuko and Ozai. Even if Zuko’s question of where Ursa is doesn’t go anywhere (in the show, I know they touch on that in the comics), it’s nice to see the newly-crowned Fire Lord Zuko having evolved past a need for Ozai’s attention, or a fear of Ozai’s wrath.
- It’s nice to see the whole Gaang having fun at Iroh’s tea shop, in the end. And I stand corrected, this is where we get the final blind joke.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I’m lucky in that most of my childhood cartoons hold up as an adult. I watched Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, Code Lyoko, Courage the Cowardly Dog...
Still, there’s something special about Avatar: The Last Airbender. It had a unique aesthetic and world that no other show was quite like. It had a story that was like nothing I’d ever seen as a kid.
And it doesn’t just hold up, it’s even better.
When I was a kid, it was as simple as rooting for the good guys to win, and for the Firebenders to lose, except for Zuko once he turned good.
Now, as an adult (but mostly as someone with a DVD player/Netflix account so I’m not just watching whatever reruns I can catch) I can appreciate the character development, the arcs, the entire story.
I can appreciate how Aang grew from a little boy who does indeed have a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone, into a hero who could save the world.
I can appreciate how Zuko was an abuse victim who did what all abused children wish they could do and left his abuser.
I can appreciate... Gosh, Iroh’s entire character and dynamic with Zuko.
Some people say that Avatar “starts off as a kids show, then turns serious”, but I’d disagree. Avatar is a show where our heroes change, where they learn lessons, where they come of age and become the kind of heroes who can end a war that’s been going on for over a century.
As relieved as I am to be (mostly) done with these posts for the rest of the year, I am still oh-so-glad that I’ve rewatched Avatar yet again, and I know that I will be whenever I rewatch it in the future.
Now, with all that said... Farewell! Until the Christmas special, at least...

Heat- Chapter 60: Fire Lord
Aang meditates at the beach house porch in front of four candles, some berries, a plate of fruit, and a small cup of water. Momo flies in front of Aang.
Aang strokes Momo’s head. “Hey, Momo. I don't suppose you know what I should do.”
Momo squawks.
Aang sighs. “I didn't think so.”
Aang looks from the beach house to an island.
Momo lays down to rest, and soon Aang falls asleep too after the candles have burnt out.
Aang jolts awake to chanting and walks toward the mysterious island, barely awake with Momo following him.
Aang starts swimming when he reaches the water.
The next morning, Sokka and Jet throw the last of the stuff onto Appa.
Jet dusts off his hands. “Okay, that's everything.”
Toph shakes her head. “No, it's not. Where's Aang?”
Team Avatar runs to the beach house.
“Aang? Aang!” Zuko cried out, panicking from the loss of the boy he considered as pack.
Toph stomps around, throwing open doors. “Come on, lazyass, let's go.”
Suki and Katara run to check one side of the beach house.
Sokka, Jet, and Toph run to check the other side.
Zuko opens a door, but does not find Aang.
Toph shrugs to show Zuko she hasn’t found him either.
Zuko checks the porch, feeling the beginnings of a panic attack.
Jet gently holds him.
He spots Aang's staff as Katara and Suki follow him.
Sokka picks up the staff, “He left his staff. That's so strange.”
Zuko walks onto the porch with Jet. “Aang's not in the house. Let's check the beach.”
The group walks onto the beach.
Sokka points to some footprints. “Look, there's his footprints. The trail ends here.”
Suki folds her arms over her chest. “So, he went for a midnight swim and never came back?”
Katara looks around with concern. “Maybe he was captured.”
Jet examines the footprints. “I don't think so. There's no sign of a struggle.”
Toph snaps her fingers. “I bet he ran away again.”
Sokka shakes his head. “Uh-uh. He left behind his glider and Appa.”
Toph rolls her eyes. “Then what do you think happened to him, oh sleuthy one?”
Sokka puffs up with pride. “It’s pretty obvious. Aang mysteriously disappears before an important battle? He's definitely on a Spirit World journey.”
Zuko frowns. “But if he was, wouldn't his body still be here?”
Sokka deflates. “Oh, yeah. Forgot about that.”
Toph shakes her head. “Dumbass,” she mutters.
“Then he's got to be somewhere on Ember Island. Let's split up and look for him,” Katara said determinedly.
Toph latches onto Zuko's arm.
“I'm going with Zuko! What?! Everyone else went on a life-changing field trip with Zuko. Now it's my turn,” Toph said defensively.
Zuko flushes but laughs anyway.
Sokka and Jet ride on Appa, searching the shores for Aang.
In Harbor City, Suki and Katara approach a group of people gathered in a circle.
“Aang! Aang! Aang!” the crowd cheers.
Shocked, Katara and Suki glance at each other and simultaneously run into the circle.
Actress Aang stood in the center as Actor Toph hoists her onto his shoulders. “Avatar State! Yip-yip!”
The crowd cheers.
Suki and Katara become frustrated by the false lead.
Toph and Zuko weren’t doing any better walking along the beach.
“And then when I was nine, I ran away again,” Toph droned on.
Zuko nods, partially paying attention. “Uh-huh.”
Toph kicks a rock. “I know I shouldn't complain. My parents gave me everything I ever asked for, but they never gave me the one thing I really wanted, their love. You know what I mean?”
Zuko nods. “I do. I know you had a really rough childhood and I can relate more than anyone here. I want to rant about Ozai being a dick later, but right now, let’s really focus on finding Aang.”
Toph grins. “I can’t wait, Sparky.”
Later, back at the beach house, Toph, Zuko, Suki, and Katara sit on the beach house stairs.
Sokka and Jet land Appa below the stairs.
Sokka jumps off Appa after Jet. “Judging by the looks on your faces, I'm guessing you guys didn't find Aang, either.”
Zuko shakes his head. “No. It's like he just….disappeared.”
Jet suddenly looks around. “Hey, wait a minute. Has anyone noticed that Momo is missing, too?”
Sokka turns to Appa. “Oh no! I knew it was only a matter of time! Appa ate Momo!”
Sokka opens Appa’s mouth. “Momo, I'm coming for you, buddy.”
Katara rolls her eyes. “Sokka, Appa didn't eat Momo. He's probably with Aang.”
“That's just what Appa wants you to think,” Sokka hisses, climbing into Appa’s mouth.
Zuko grabs the collar of Sokka’s shirt and pulls him out of Appa’s mouth. “Get out of the bison's mouth, Sokka. We have a real problem here. Aang is nowhere to be found and the comet is only two days away.”
Katara turns to Zuko, eyes frustrated.
“Zuko. What are we gonna do?”

ATLA fanfic part 10/10
You can read the whole thing on AO3 here !
--
Not only did Zuko happily attend Aang and Katara’s engagement party, he also somehow ended up hosting it. As it turned out, Aang and Katara’s world-travelling lifestyle had prevented them from having a permanent home where they could reasonably accommodate even the most modest guest list. When Sokka had so kindly reminded Katara how convenient it was that they were all friends with several people who had significant real estate to their name, the solution to their problem seemed actually quite simple.
With that, Zuko found himself opening up his family’s Ember Island beach house to what ended up being a Team Avatar reunion of sorts. He himself wasn’t familiar with the concept of celebrating a couple’s engagement, and he supposed that came with the territory of his family history of arranged marriages. Still, when Sokka had declared his interest in getting the gang back together in honor of his little sister and long-time friend’s impending marriage, Zuko certainly wasn’t about to argue. There was a first time for everything, after all.
Perhaps none of them truly had the blueprints for what an engagement party should entail, but whenever Aang was involved, you could be sure that it would turn into a dance party at some point. Zuko found himself watching Aang try to teach Toph and Sokka an ancient Air Nomad waltz, and he couldn’t help but think about how Azulon would be rolling over in his grave if he knew that the Avatar was currently in his beach house giving dancing lessons to an Earthbender and a Water Tribe warrior. The thought gave him a rush of pride in a way he never could have imagined years ago.
When it seemed clear that the moves Aang was trying to teach required a certain degree of ability to defy gravity for proper execution, Aang broke away from the dance floor, sweaty and gleeful. He caught Zuko’s eye, and for a moment Zuko worried that he was about to suggest they do the Dancing Dragon together. It turned out that Aang had a different objective, however.
“Oh, Zuko! Can I ask for your advice on something?” he asked, joining his friend in the torchlight away from main festivities.
“Well, you’d be better off asking my uncle if you want advice. But I can try,” Zuko responded. He wondered if performing the Dancing Dragon in front of all their friends might actually have been an easier request.
“I’m sure your advice will be just as good!” Aang said brightly, in that way of his that was so entirely genuine. “So, Katara and I are getting married next summer.”
“Yeah, that’s kind of why we’re all here,” Zuko pointed out.
“But, see, the thing is that I’ve never actually been to an Air Nomad wedding before.  I want to incorporate my culture into our wedding somehow, but how can I do that if it’s one part of my culture that I just...don’t know anything about? I want to honor my people in some way, but I don’t know how to do it right. Is it worth it to try to find something in a book somewhere about it? The only library I know that might have had something is buried in the desert! So maybe it’s time for another life-changing field trip...”
This wasn’t what Zuko had been expecting at all.
“Aang, I really don’t know if I’m the right person to be asking,” he said cautiously.  “Look, my country probably has thousands of books on traditional wedding culture, but they were also the people who started a hundred year war just because they thought that their culture was the best of all time and felt like traditions needed to be the same everywhere. At this point, I’d say you can just make something up. Or do whatever the Water Tribe does. Or both?”
Zuko’s heart sank while waiting for the response to what he feared was the least helpful advice he had ever given, but to his surprise, Aang actually seemed less tense than before.
“I guess I never thought about it like that before. I’ll have to ask Katara what the Water Tribe does, since I’ve never been to a Water Tribe wedding either! Actually, I don’t think even she has. Maybe we will have to make something up. Thanks, Zuko.”
--
Months later, Zuko found himself wrapped in a thick, ornate blue parka while attending what was certainly the most epic jumble of a wedding that the world had ever seen, with a guest list that featured the Earth King, the chiefs of the Southern and Northern Water tribe, the Fire Lord, the full force of the Kyoshi Warriors, a handful of swamp people, Air Acolytes, ex-pro benders, and the greatest earthbender in the world. Aang looked wise and regal in his brilliant, golden robes, and Katara was breathtaking in her finest furs.
In the end, Aang and Katara’s ceremony was most likely unfamiliar to any culture, but all that mattered was that there was a massive potluck dinner, a full night of music and dancing, and many, many heartfelt speeches about how love is brightest in the dark.

A:TLA watch, part 17 - SERIES FINALE
All of my posts on this are here.  I’ll be putting up a masterlist sometime soon.
*deep breaths*
Okay, it’s time. Time to finish this series. I’m both desperate to find out how it ends and also desperate to stay in the middle of it. It’s been a hell of a ride… here we go!
Sozin’s Comet, Part 1: The Phoenix King
Zuko teaching aang is so great, even when he’s getting touchy about it.
BEACH PARTY lol sokka, never change
Appa sand sculpture!!
Nooooooooo zuko I know you have to teach but NOT THE SAND SCULPTURES
Oooo aang wants to wait??
Ohhhh call back to that one war meeting!
Oh shiiiiiiit wiping out the earth nation. Big task. LOVE the shot of him walking over the map and casting his shadow before him.
Omg dragging zuko into the group hug XD
HOW TO REDIRECT LIGHTNING ZUKOOOOOOOO uncle tea would be SO PROUD
“yeah, I’ll just do that” :( aaaaaang.
I am really curious as to how they’re going to handle this (aang potentially killing the firelord)
Omg look at the precious children training I love them so much
God aang :( I love how much weight they’re giving this.
The music as he walks into the night!
Wait. Where did the island aang was heading towards go????
“what? Everyone else went on a life-changing field trip with zuko, now it’s my turn” Toph, I sincerely love you
“get out of the bison’s mouth, sokka” XD
“if anyone’s got experience hunting the avatar, it’s you” GOOD POINT
Fire Lord is leaving? Where is he going?
Damn the dynamic between Azula and her father…
“mole? Her skin is flawless” jesus this show XD. Also, yet AGAIN, a logical, perfect call back to an earlier character. The way this show winds this stuff back in really makes the world feel real and solid.
“where are we?” AANG
Sozin’s Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters
My dvd player is skipping a bit :/ hope this doesn’t keep happening. Maybe it’s because I keep pausing so much to type stuff. Hmm. I’m gonna try overlapping windows and see if that helps. [edit: it did, though I had to stop the whole thing and give it a rest between episodes. It’s old and cranky.]
“he doesn’t exist” hell of a disappearing act there, aang
ZUKO WANTS TO FIND UNCLE TEA HELL YES
I have been WAITING for the return of Iroh!!!
Oo maybe talking to zuko will help
THE ORDER OF THE WHITE LOTUS RIGHT??? And aang’s friend is one of them!!!!
“new grandfather” XD XD XD holy shit sokka’s so enthusiastic
“all old people know each other” LOL
I genuinely love aang working through previous avatars, trying to get an answer.
“did you do anything interesting on the day of the eclipse” “no, not really” LOL
SURFING AVATAR
Ohhh how nervous zuko is!
Ooo an air nomad avatar…
“I have to kill the firelord” is it me or is that the first time aang’s used the word “kill”
ZUKO’S CRYING. IROH’S CRYING. I’M CRYING. OH GOD.
“it wasn’t that hard uncle. You have a pretty strong scent.” God XD
THE ISLAND IS A SEA CREATURE I AM UNNERVED BUT DELIGHTED
“the fatherlord” XD
“it has to be you” oh BLESS
“my destiny is to take it BACK” ohhhhhhhhhh

Also sokka looks so little in that helmet, I can’t deal with this
Duuuuude the island beast thing!!
Oh boy here comes the comet oh godddddddd that closing shot of aang…
Sozin’s Comet, Part 3: Into the Inferno

Azula… jesus no one needs to take down azula, she’s going to do it herself XD
TOPH KNOCKING ON THE DOOR AND THEN USING IT AS A METAL SUIT MY MOUTH IS JUST OPEN IN DELIGHT
“I can’t believe the captain remembered my birthday” BAHAHA AMAZING
God azula is just dissolving isn’t she?

~
SO WE DON’T HAVE TIME TO UNPACK ALL THAT
BUT I LOVE IT
I LOVE ALL OF IT
HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS
*steadying breaths*
This series is absolutely INCREDIBLE and I am SO GLAD I watched it. I can’t wait to rewatch it in the summer (I’m planning it with a friend) – and next month I’m going to get hold of Legend of Korra to keep me going in the meantime.
Thank you so much to everyone who’s been following along, it’s been really lovely to share this with you!! I am one hundred percent here for anyone who wants to talk (read: let me yell with them) about the whole series now, provided there are no Korra spoilers.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to ramble to myself about how amazing this was until it’s fully sunk in XD

listen i will never be okay with the fact that there is no book of air / season 4 of avatar the last airbender
so to cope i came up with a list of things i WISH would have been covered and things i headcanon wouldve been true if s4 existed
the white lotus is definitely connected to the lion turtle and i want to know how
the fact that energy bending exists?? listen i KNOW this happens in lok too but honest to god i cant even consider that canon anymore kfndkfnfjf there was SO much potential behind that
like. before the avatar people bended energy??? how did that turn into bending?? who really was the og avatar bc while i love wan he wasnt the actual origin story and im Mad
sokka and aang interacting one on one cmon lets fucking go. these two barely have ANY relationship development. but their ideologies and temperaments are so different? wheres the clash between aang’s all-encompassing altruism and sokka’s more selective desire to help others like cmon
i saw somewhere that apparently the gaang was supposed to find More Airbenders if there was a fourth season and i have never felt more robbed in my life
like idk how true that is but can there at least be like. one??? ik it directly conflicts w the title but CMON
at the VERY least we shouldve gotten more of aangs backstory. what life as an air nomad was like. his friends, his family, more on monk gyatzo
ALSO. WHERES KUZON. WHAT HAPPENED TO AANGS OLD FIRE NATION PAL
give toph the zuko field trip she deserves
how did the fire nation react to ozai’s defeat? how easily did they accept aang and zuko as leaders??
WHERES ZUKOS MOM WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT the comics suck and i dont believe them so What Happened
especially bc that arc would tie in so well with azula and any recovery she might make (or not make)
also can we have more azula backstory like. from HER side. she mustve felt all that pressure growing up so how did she cope with it and what are key moments in her childhood that shaped who she is???
HOW DID SHE TY LEE AND MAI MEET i want more on the royal fire academy for girls STAT
so you know how waterbending has bloodbending as its Bad Side™ and firebending has the sun dance stuff as its Good Side so like. what about air bending
LIKE what are the extended capabilities of air bending?? what makes it stronger or weaker?? why wasnt it expanded like the other elements come ON
can we go into sparky sparky boom man and his fellow combustion benders too like. is it the combination of air and fire bending? like lava bending for fire/earth?? who are the combustion benders where do they come from
TOPH AND HER PARENTS PLEASE i want closure and she deserves it
and just in general more toph development bc wheres her big character arc, her fatal flaw, what internal struggle is she dealing with
(like she kinda dumped her whole life story on zuko at one point and apparently ran away from home multiple times so like wheres the development on that huh)
and in that same vein whats irohs backstory and how did he come to realize his mistakes and how did he change?? like theres a reason he loves zuko so much and its obvious he sees some of himself in zuko imo so whats his deal
the lion turtles gotta come back at some point and this time in the context of a general imbalance, not just fire vs the other elements. like some real white lotus shit. like i honest to god feel so strongly about this, it would make for such a killer fucking storyline fjjdjdnfjdn
ba sing se in the aftermath of the war give it to me what happens to the dai li how does it all go down
MORE ON MOMO bc momo can see spirit world stuff and ik hes just a silly animal sidekick but I Want More
ik i keep coming back to this but
the white lotus. where did they come from. and honestly??? WHEN IS ZUKO GONNA BECOME AN INITIATE like thatd fit so well with his character and his arc and could tie in so well to the beginning of the organization (and the origins of the avatar too probably?)
is there a sun spirit like theres a moon spirit. is this taking it too far bc i wanna know
more on mai and zukos relationship bc ngl i didnt totally buy it lol
ALSO can we have sokka and katara interacting one on one more too?? like?? a sibling episode or something bc im in desperate need of them working together and working through their different ways of dealing with their traumas (aka losing their mom, their dad going off to war, etc)
just in general. SIBLING BONDING please im on my knees
i love atla with all my heart and soul and whats already there is more than enough but like. i have so many questions and there are so many facets of the story and characters and world to explore

"But they remind me of Toph/Zuko" I LOVE THIS SHIP!! It's just because of the fanart that I started shipping that and??? They are precious I love them??? Not an OTP or something like that but. They were precious!! I feel really alone about that haha, sorry I needed to talk about my "secret" love for them.
THEY ARE SO PRECIOUS. Yeah like it wasn’t something I seriously shipped but darn it, there was a lot of really lovely fanart of them~ They were adorable together and if they were a couple, they’d be a lot of fun too lol. Even just as friends, they’d be so much fun together. (Did they ever interact in Korra?! I can’t remember but omg I want to see old lady Toph picking on old man Zuko hahaha)
For anyone unfamiliar with the show, this blush on Zuko’s face is a 100% real canon blush haha. All the other characters had gone on adventures with Zuko so when they were splitting up for another mission or something, Toph quite literally called dibs on Zuko right away because “everyone else got to go on a life changing field trip with Zuko, now it’s my turn!” and it was so cute
