About ATLA Relationship Arcs
So, this is me, finally trying to write some meta after lurking in my little tumblr corner for months! Hi!
Although I’ve tried to tag properly, if you are a Kat*anger and just want to enjoy your favourite couple in peace, this might not be the post for you. I am not trying to bash characters but I do have a lot of critical stuff to say about the writing.
Anyway, you have been warned and here is my story about my personal first Atla experience: I watched the show this year for the first time, and after the end of Book 1 I decided to look up spoilers, because after what happened to Yue, I wanted to make sure that Zuko and Iroh would be ok. So I knew what was going to happen: Kat*ang endgame and absolutely no Zutara at all. Still, by the end of Book 3, I was convinced that I had read wrong - that there would be an epilogue with a different ending or at least that Aang would only get together with Katara post-show- in that Korra series or something - because anything else wouldn’t make sense- right?
….
After I got over my shock and surprise, I went online and found out about that decade-long aggressive passionate ship war and how even the showrunners got involved.
And then I really worried that I might have missed a few points. Apparently ”Aang and Katara were the DNA of the show”, according to the creators themselves, and “Zutara could never have happened”.
Another popular anti-ZK argument I found was: Why do you always go on about Katara and Zuko? Just look at Zuko and Aang! They are the hero/ anti-hero and each other’s foils, their relationship is much more meaningful!”
So I tried to find out what it was that I apparently couldn’t see.
(Another disclaimer: I love analysing stories (like many Zutarians apparently) and this will get long and rambly. If you get bored to tears when people start talking about “narrative structure” you will probably not like this.)
Talking about narrative structure, I do believe that, in order to let your story, your characters and their relationships really shine, a good basic structure is important. There should be a recognizable development and individual parts of the story that build upon each other and lead to consequences and change, until there is a completed arc - because it is all about the journey that takes you to a satisfying ending, right? So that’s what I tried to do, with my personal Kat*ang vs. Zutara take, I tried to look at the structure and development of their relationship arcs.
The argument that threw me off track for a while is that compared to Aang and Zuko, Zuko and Katara’s relationship is not supposed to be that relevant for the plot. After all, Zuko is the foil, the anti-hero, the deuteragonist to Aang, who is the hero protagonist.
This is all true of course. But then why is it that in every finale, Zuko’s main opponent (and later ally) is not Aang but Katara? Why is it that their sun/moon, red/blue, fire/water dichotomy is so obviously highlighted?
I think one reason why Zuko and Katara are paired off so frequently in the story - as opposite elements, as opponents and as allies - is that they BOTH are Aang’s deuteragonists. While Zuko also acts as antagonist and Aangs foil/mirror, Katara takes over the more traditional deuteragonist role of confidant / best friend/ narrator.
Protagonist Aang is what connects them, although they are on opposite sides: Both need Aang because he represents their hope to save their world. Very simply put, Katara protects him, so he can make the world a safer place again, and Zuko wants to capture him, so he can go home and be safe again. That rivalry between them is already established in the first episode, even before they meet each other: Katara, who hopes that the Avatar will return (as she tells everyone in the intro), and Zuko, who seems to be obsessed with finding him for more sinister reasons.
And just to make sure, I am not talking here about the characters’ feelings and emotions! This is just about the abstract roles they have been assigned within the narrative.
When regarding Zutara’s special connection to Aang and their rivalry with each other, it makes absolute sense to stress their “same but different”ness as well, visually and metaphorically: Red and blue, fire and water, sun and moon, arguably Painted Lady/Blue Spirit, and, when you put into account their story arc, also Oma and Shu.
With this basis, which puts them together and sets them apart simultaneously, their relationship already becomes very dynamic and interesting, even before you consider any romantic potential.
And here’s another thing, Zuko and Katara also have their own story arc within the main plot. Although they don’t have many scenes together before Zuko joins the Gaang, when they do meet there is always a new shift in their relationship and in quite a few cases their interactions are important for the main plot as well. If you just look at their “end fights” at each book’s finale, there is an obvious and consequential build-up, like any decent story arc should have:
Book 1 starts with Zuko as the powered-up enemy and Katara as the weak newbie waterbender. Both are battling over Aang. At the end of Book 1, they are finally established as equally powerful fighters but still fundamentally different (You rise with the moon, I rise with the sun!)
In CoD at the end of Book 2 happens the next step: they realize that they are not different at all! But Aang still doesn’t represent the same for them and they end up on opposing sides of the war again.
In the Book 3 finale, when Zuko has completed his own (anti-) hero's journey and Aang represents the same “hope” for both of them, they do not only join forces: Their “same but different”- traits make them such a uniquely suited match that they are even able to save each other’s lives during their fight with Azula (who in turn happens to be Katara and Zuko’s antagonist/mirror/foil).
And in addition to their own story arc they even get an individual recurring theme, which also appears in every book whenever their relationship status changes: The lost mothers, especially Katara’s mother.
In Book 1, Katara’s necklace (the symbol of Kiya) plays not only a major part in two of Zuko’s capture attempts, it is the reason for their very first one-one one encounter in the story.
Their first friendly connection in COD in Book 2 happens because they start talking about their mothers. And in Book 3, their final reconciliation (sealed with a very cathartic hug) happens after their life-changing trip which is, of course, all about Katara’s mother.
Again, I am not even trying to analyse their characters and motivations within the story - there are many metas that have already done that much better, more detailed and with screenshots. This is just dry structure and tropes and themes. But I think people recognize and connect with a well-structured arc, even subconsciously, which is one of the reasons that makes Zutara such a compelling couple. They complete and contrast each other, their relationship dynamic constantly changes, builds up, falls apart, reconnects. Such a setup is the perfect playground for a lot of creative takes on what-ifs and alternative scenarios and of course, shipping them romantically is extremely tempting - think of all the possibilities! It’s no wonder that the Zutara fandom is still so active decades after the end of the show. And it’s also no wonder that the Zutarians are known for “over-analysing everything”. You can only over-analyse if there is anything that gives you enough food to analyse to begin with. Which brings me to
KAT*ANG
I just go right to the top and take the quote from Br*yke themselves:
Kata*ng was in the DNA of the thing from the start…. [Zutara] was just dark and intriguing.
If you read this quote and then start watching the show, I would (grudgingly) agree that:
Aang and Katara understand and complement each other really well. Aang gives her the chance to have fun and go on adventures and in turn, Katara is his fiercest supporter from the very beginning, something that he really needs after he lost all his people AND has to find out that the world thinks the war is sort of his fault. In turn, the journey to the North Pole is as important to Katara as it is to Aang, because it is her dream to learn waterbending properly. That’s what she literally says when Sokka & Co try to banish Aang: (Sokka: Where do you think you’re going? Katara: To find a waterbender. Aang is taking me to the North Pole.) In that way, they are friends who give and take equally and are equally taken care of. They even have the last Airbender/ last Southern Waterbender status that connects them. The few times they have a fight, Aang does something in the end to redeem himself (perform some heroic feat) and Katara sees that she is right to believe in him.
Aang has this very sweet crush on her and it will be very sweet and wholesome when Katara will return his feelings at the end of their adventure after he has hit puberty. On the other side, there is also some heavy shipbaiting with Zuko: I save you from the pirates. The betrothal necklace. June and her excellent shipping taste. But in the end they are enemies, they barely know each other and, come on, it would be too dark and intriguing! There is no real threat against friends to lovers Kat*ang, the soft heart of the story. It’s very straightforward and there are a lot of simple “the hero saves the day” scenes for Aang but that’s fine! It’s not really my kind of ship but that’s not the point, it works for the story they want to tell.
End of Book 1.
In my - probably harsh- opinion, everything you really need to know about the Kat*ang relationship has been told by this point. If you want to be really mean, already by Book 1, episode 3.
That explains maybe why many (not all! but many) pro-KA arguments sound as if their shippers have not watched Book 2 and 3 at all. The Book 1 synopsis also perfectly sums up Bry*ke’s quote above. But then Book 2 and 3 are still there and I don’t know what happened but it seems as if they somehow decided that the Kat*ang story does not need any new and lasting input. Maybe because they were afraid that too much new development and change would stray too far away from their original Kat*ang vision. But there are still 2 more books and more adventures and Kat*ang somehow has to be kept apart until the finale.
So the tension in their potential romance is based largely on the question whether or not Katara will return Aang’s feelings. In general I don’t have a problem with that will-she-won’t she-technique. It works well in books where the love interest is not a POV or in shows/ movies where the love interest is not one of the main characters. But Katara is not only the female lead but also arguably the narrative voice of the whole story! As a result, this kind of writing makes Katara look as if she doesn’t have any agency in their relationship, which is not surprisingly a very popular anti-KA criticism.
Additionally, since her dream - learning waterbending - has been fulfilled by the end of Book 1, the relationship work becomes a bit one-sided. Of course Aang is the hero and his journey is the heart of the story. But in order to highlight their special connection it would have helped to give Katara another personal agenda, which Aang could have supported in some way. She is still the last Southern Waterbender and he the Last Airbender but this is not really explored in the Kat*ang relationship. And her other personal agenda, her mother, is already reserved for the Zutara arc.
Instead, in Book 2 and 3 the Kat*ang story is somehow all over the place. Of course there is new conflict and a few romantic scenes as well. But obstacles are either introduced too late or just dropped when not needed anymore, conflict is not resolved and their flirty, romantic moments never lead anywhere- and if they do, they lead to more conflict that is not resolved (yes, I am looking at you, EIP Kiss!).
Take for example Katara’s very sudden argument that they cannot be together now because there is a war going on. We hear her saying that for the first time in the very last episode (EIP) before the 4-part finale. That is too late to have any impact! That she has these kinds of thoughts was never even alluded to before. Not once.
Or the pattern Aang runs away/ is flaky - Katara is upset - Aang comes back and does his hero thing - Katara is relieved. In regards to their relationship arc, nothing changes here between Book 1 and the finale, only the stakes for Aang’s heroic performances get higher.
Or Katara being the one who is able to calm Aang down when he cannot control the Avatar state (which, in my personal opinion, is neither romantic nor healthy). This is also connected to the problem with the seventh Chakra, that Aang needs to let go of his attachment for her. I will be angry forever with how they wasted this for a possible relationship development! That Aang has to decide to either do his duty or save his forever girl (because let’s be fair, he did try to let go and only ran when he had the vision of Katara in danger) - that’s a fantastic setup!
But no, it doesn’t have any real consequences for Kat*ang at all. Instead there were only half-baked attempts – Aang does lie about his failed practice with Guru Pathik but the ultimate reason why his chakra is blocked is Azula, not his decision to run. Aang does try to let go of Katara for a little bit but then Azula shoots him. Nothing in Book 3 shows any change in his feelings that could have been a result of his instant let-it-go. If anything, he gets weirdly obsessive - which could have been used as a side effect of his blocked chakra but – again, no, nothing happens.
I suspect the whole thing was just introduced to create temporary drama for poor Aang, but it is never explained why Katara holds him back, what aspect of the attachment is blocking him or what would happen if he did let her go. Maybe they tried to make a statement about how love is more important than Avatar rules – which would have been fine but it’s also never properly explored. Instead, as soon as that plot point becomes inconvenient it’s simply dropped like a random rock™.
Compare all that to the Zutara arc, where both characters’ feelings about each other are always very much in the open, and where every interaction causes lasting effects in their relationship. Yes, it is unfair to compare that to Kat*ang, because up to the end of Book 3, Zuko and Katara almost never meet, while Aang and Katara spend almost every episode together – of course they cannot do meaningful things all the time. But on the other side, with Kat*ang, there would have been a great chance to show a subtle, gradual build-up instead.
It also doesn’t help that the Zutara arc seems hellbent on sabotaging every romantic moment Aang is allowed to enjoy:
There is Kat*angs first maybe-kiss in the dark before the background of the Oma and Shu legend. But it does not lead anywhere. Instead, Zuko and Katara almost reenact the legend itself in the Book 2 finale as two real enemies to almost-friends, including a glowy rocks-backdrop and the right costume colours, just so nobody misses the message.
In Footloose The Headband, Aang and Katara have a really sweet dance together, and everybody can see how they almost intuitively know each other's moves. This could be a great hint on how well they will fight together in the finale. But is it plot-relevant? No, because the final tag team is Katara and Zuko! While Aang gets paired off with random rock™.
Then there is Aang’s riding off to battle- kiss in DotBS, which Katara is not even allowed to enjoy, because keeping her feelings vague is apparently more important than character development at this point. It is the only romantic moment that gets mentioned again, but in a way that sinks the former cute and wholesome ship into the deep ocean, and the reason is - Aang is jealous of Zuko!
If all of this was only done for the sake of shipbaiting, then it really went out of control at some point.
In the end, the showrunners still had their reasons to choose Kat*ang, maybe because that corresponded more to their own vision, and there are still enough people out there who agree with them. Which is absolutely fine! In the end, what matters most is how you personally connect to the characters and nobody needs to defend their personal taste. But the typical anti-ZK claim, that all the Zutarians with their crazy analysis and rambling meta essays are reaching and delusional and that they desperately try to construct something that isn’t there, is not only a very lazy argument but simply not true.
And I’d claim that in spite of the canon choice, Zutara is technically the better written relationship. By far.

Nev, Max, Help!-Nate Jacobs Oneshot
Requested: Yes
Warnings: aggressiveness and rudeness from Nate and a brief panic attack scene
A/N: The reader is gender neutral since the requester did not specify what they wanted and I did not want to disrespect the storyline from the show. Also, it’s a long one.
For once, Amy Winehouse’s low, melancholy voice did nothing to soothe my nerves as I typed what I was looking for in the designated box. “Love is a Losing Game” was definitely not the best song for the mood but I loved her voice so much; it was like a really messed up security blanket for me. My thumbs shook as I kept typing and quickly deleting my words.
Someone to have fun with.
No, that’ll bring every single creep to my profile.
Someone to watch Netflix with.
Ew, no, they won’t want to go anywhere or do anything.
Someone to discuss Maya Angelou with...
This could go one of two ways: attract a sensitive, nice person or the ultimate softboi who was really just an f-boy in a sensible cardigan.
Okay, Y/N, just add to it.
...and have adventures, great conversations, and watch the best movies.
That seemed broad enough and, potentially, weeded out all the weirdos. Patti Stanger would approve of this. I took such a deep breath that I could feel the oxygen in my feet as I pressed the green check mark. An adorable buffering sign appeared before being quickly replaced by a CONGRATULATIONS, Y/N/N, ON COMPLETING YOUR PROFILE.
The air came out of me slowly, like a balloon, and I tried to make myself relax as I swiped through different matches. One person was too short, the other too tall, another had way too many pictures with reptiles in his profile, and one’s bio simply read: DM and you’ll find out.
Serial killer much?
“That’s part of your problem, Y/N,” Jules had chastised me a few day prior.
“What do you mean by ‘part’?” I’d replied.
“Well, for one, you barely leave the house anymore unless I drag you out,” Jules argued.
“I’m busy,” I’d defended.
“Rewatching Breaking Bad for the eighth time does not count as being busy. Plus, you’re so picky.”
“Am not!”
“You said you’d only do DiCaprio in his Great Gatsby days,” Rue had added.
“Did you see him in that suit?”
Jules then shrugged. “All I’m saying is if you aren’t careful, you will end up all alone.”
“That’s not true, Y/N might get cats.”
That conversation had haunted me since and had driven me to making a dating profile after the required Saturday night family dinner. While my parents and brother were downstairs watching a movie, I was holed up in my room, cringing and regretting accepting any chat requests.
Half an hour on the app caused the images of various male genitalia to be burned into my mind. I would need my brain soaked in holy water for it to be erased. I huffed and kept scrolling, vainly hoping and wishing for a decent guy to pop up on my radar.
Maybe Jules and Rue were wrong. Maybe I had all the right in the world to be picky, I thought harshly to myself.
I dropped my phone on my nightstand and flopped against my pillows as Me and Mr. Jones began playing. I sighed and felt myself being lulled into the comforting abyss Amy created.
Ding!
I jumped out and glared at the source of the noise. Another chat request, another picture to ruin my young brain?
“Be positive, Y/N, this might be good,” I stated as I grabbed the phone.
Tyler wants to chat!
I frowned and opened up the app, only to be met with the most sculpted six-pack I had ever seen. My heart began banging against my chest and my thumbs fumbled for a moment to answer the chat request.
Whoosh.
My stomach dropped as I stared at my first chat to Tyler: Shg.ismtle
I’m. Going. To. Die. Alone.
I quickly typed: Please ignore that, I’m so sorry!
Seconds later, my phone dinged.
Tyler: Really? I thought you were trying to send me a secret code and I liked that we were that cool already.
This was not real, this could not be happening. Tyler had to be a bot, that was why he didn’t show his face in his profile. Bots were supposed to have a hard time recognizing and creating faces, right?
But, on the off chance Tyler was real, it would have been rude to leave the conversation so abruptly?
Y/N: Who knows? Maybe it was a secret code and I’m just testing you.
Tyler: Ok, let me guess what it means.
Tyler: Hi?
Y/N: Haha, you really thought I’d use such a simple code as a first message?
Tyler: It’s my bad for underestimating u. I should have known u were smarter since you read Maya Angelou.
Y/N: U a fan?
Tyler: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
He knows Angelou? He could have Googled a quote though. Still, it’s a good quote to use if he had Googled it.
Y/N: Nice, but, doesn’t get u out of the guessing game.
As Tyler helplessly guessed wrong for several minutes, I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. I used to think online dating was a last resort or a breeding ground for predators. But, maybe there were decent people looking for something (or someone) meaningful after all.
Tyler: I give up, you’re really good.
Y/N: Thx. But, I can tell you what I meant to say.
Tyler: The suspense is srsly kiilling me.
Y/N: I meant 2 say hey.
Tyler: I guessed that!
Y/N: No, u guessed ‘hi’, there’s a difference.
Tyler: C’mon, barely.
For the rest of the night, Tyler and I chatted. He told me that he plays baseball at a school across town and he doesn’t like anyone around there. He liked John Mulaney stand-up, lemon bars, going to the gym, hanging out with his friends, and reading good books. He was an only child and his parents tended to spoil him. I told him about my friends and how I liked being on the swim team at my school as well as the different YouTubers and books I enjoyed. When I finally fell asleep, I dreamed of talking to him.
On Monday, Jules and Rue were hanging out outside the school as other people either headed to class or relaxed on the lawn. I could not stop my feet from bouncing as I walked up to them.
“...and that is why Sailor Mercury is the most underrated character of the whole show,” Jules affrimed.
Rue seemed halfway interested as her head nodded slowly underneath the hood of her burgundy hoodie. “Cool, all I asked was who’s your favorite but, cool.”
Jules rolled her eyes playfully and straightened up when she saw me. “Hey, Y/N, nice shirt.”
“Thanks.” I wore a sky blue tie dye shirt with ripped jeans and white Converse.
Rue leaned forward and squinted at me. “You’re not wearing black, something’s wrong.”
“Nothing’s wrong, she’s obviously been influenced by me!” Jules teased as she wrapped a slim arm around my shoulders.
“Yeah, you can only hang out with this literal rainbow human so long before she starts influencing your outfit choices.”
We started heading inside, which was really just Jules and me dragging Rue into the building.
“But I don’t wanna be here. It’s so stupid that I have to wait six more months before I can legally decide where I spend my time,” Rue muttered.
“It’s fine, you have us!” Jules insisted.
“Yup!” I agreed.
“Hey, Y/N, Rue, Jules!” Cassie greeted as she sidled up next to me.
We all greeted her.
“Have a good weekend?” Rue asked.
“Yeah, there was this great party that Nick Davis threw. I swear, everyone there was on acid.” Cassie stopped herself and bit her bottom lip. “Sorry---”
Rue shook her head. “It’s fine.”
“How were yours?” Cassie asked as we continued to our lockers.
“Fine,” Jules said.
Rue shrugged in response.
I opened my mouth to reply when my phone beeped and I wrestled it out of my pocket.
Tyler: Is it 2 late 4 a good morning text?
I smiled.
“You’re so cheesy,” I muttered under my breath.
“Who’s that?” Cassie asked, peeking over my shoulder.
I jumped and cradled my phone to my chest like it was my child. “No one.”
Jules pulled open her locker and cocked a bleached eyebrow. “‘No one’ does not cause huge smiles like that!” She jabbed a sparkly-manicured finger at me.
“Yeah, show us,” Rue said. “We are your friends.”
“It’s nothing,” I insisted as I weaved around them.
I pushed myself against my locker and managed to open it with my free hand. Rue was on one side of me and Cassie was on the other.
“Is it a boy?” Cassie sang.
“Or a girl?” Rue questioned.
“It’s none of your business,” I gritted out as I grabbed my necessary books.
As I shuffled the books in my arms, Jules came from behind and slipped my phone away from me. I gasped, whirled around, and watched as Rue tried to look at the phone while Cassie playfully blocked me.
“Guys, this is not cool! This is such a serious invasion of privacy,” I argued as I tried to move around Cassie.
“We’re besties, there’s no such thing as privacy!” Jules retorted.
“Wow, Y/N, these are so----” Jules cut Rue off.
“Adorable!” Jules squealed and turned to face me.
Cassie took the opportunity to glance at my phone and she smiled. “Aw, this Tyler guy sounds so sweet.”
I snatched my phone from Jules. “Well, now you know. Can we please go to class now?”
As the other girls grabbed their things from their lockers, I got out my phone to reply to Tyler.
Y/N: It’s never too late...until noon technically.
Somehow, I started wandering away from the girls until I ran into someone. I tried to jump away, but they grabbed me by the forearms.
“I am so sorry, I should have looked where I was going---” I stopped speaking when I recognized Nate’s direct gaze on me. I was pretty tall but I always felt like he could throw me into the lockers if he wanted to.
“Watch it, Y/N,” he muttered.
“Nate, let go of them,” Maddy chided, her hand resting against one of his arms.
She seemed to have the magic touch because he relaxed and I joined my friends. As the couple continued down the hallway, I couldn’t help but admire them. In a very messed up way, they worked. Kat had told me only a little about what Nate would do whenever Maddy upset him and I felt so bad for her, angry at him, and then conflicted. Nate just had to have that stereotypical amazing all-American look.
“You okay, Y/N?” Cassie asked.
“Yeah, is it weird that I can still feel his eyes on me even when he’s not looking?” I asked.
“No, his need for dominance permeates everyone’s sense of autonomy,” Rue assured.
“Nice,” Jules said.
“And scary accurate,” Cassie added.
Jule looped her arm with mine and steered us in the direction of our first classes. “Anyway, if he tries anything, I’m sure Tyler would gladly kick his butt for you.”
Throughout the day, Tyler and I chatted and I even had to get creative with responding. In English, I kept my head down during quiet reading time and made sure my phone was positioned just right in my lap. During geometry, I told Mrs. Packer that I was having some digestive issues and spent most of the class outside the bathroom, texting Tyler. At lunch, I could barely focus on my friends’ conversation.
“Hello, Earth to Y/N?” Lexi waved her hand in front of my face and I blinked.
“Sorry, I was----”
“Texting her boooyfriiiend,” Jules sang.
“He’s not my boyfriend, we’re just talking.” I started poking at my sandwich. “What did I miss?”
“Oh, nothing, just the fact that I nearly blew up the school during chem,” Cassie said.
“Magnesium chloride isn’t an explosive,” Lexi argued.
“Well, the tube overflowed and everyone was freaking out,” Cassie argued.
“Yeah, because magnesium chloride can have bad side effects,” Lexi continued.
“I wonder what would happen if the school exploded and we weren’t all here? Would they have to give us our diplomas?” I thought outloud.
“Ooh, and I could go to fashion school early!” Jules cheered.
“I’d be happy not coming here anymore,” Rue admitted.
It was quiet for a moment as we all ate but that quiet was broken when Maddy yelled.
“WHO ARE YOU TEXTING?”
I couldn’t help myself but look. Maddy was standing behind Nate, who was sitting with his teammates at the center table. Bebe and Kat flanked Maddy a little behind. Everyone stared at them. Nate’s jaw tightened.
“Maddy, calm down,” his relaxed, controlled voice nearly echoed in the silent cafeteria.
“DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN! YOU’VE BEEN ON YOUR PHONE ALL DAY!” she snapped.
“Maddy---”
“ARE YOU TEXTING OTHER GIRLS?” Maddy shouted.
“Can we talk about this somewhere else?” Nate asked.
Maddy sighed. “Are you gonna let me see your phone?”
“Maddy, we need to talk.”
“Don’t talk to me again.”
Before Nate could respond, Maddy dumped the contents of her lunch tray over his head and threw the tray aside. Kat and Bebe followed her as she strutted out of the cafeteria amid the shocked gasps.
“I’m gonna go check on her,” Cassie whispered.
We all nodded and she quietly exited the room. As I stared at Nate, the supposed king of the school, drenched in soggy salad and fat-free milk, I wondered why he could never stay broken up with Maddy. Their relationship was not just toxic, it was volatile. Their breakups were always public and outrageous, but they always ended up back together. No one questioned it either. I never understood why people could continue to choose relationship they knew was bad over pursuing something new. I told Tyler as much that night.
Y/N: It’s like those dogs that get killed by electric fences because they keep walking into them.
Tyler: U have a good point, but, that couple’s relationship is more complicated than u think.
Y/N: Probably, but, it doesn’t look that way. They hurt each other a lot.
Tyler: How do u know?
Y/N: Bc I’ve seen it. I don’t mean 2 b judgy, but, I could never be in a relationship like that.
Tyler: Well, I don’t think anyone would b if they knew it would b bad.
Y/N: Good point. But, why would they get back together so much?
Tyler: Idk them, but, it could b bc it’s familiar and it’s what they know.
Y/N: Still, it’s messed up.
Tyler: Yeah, but I don’t wanna talk abt them anymore.
Y/N: K, what do u wanna talk abt?
A few seconds later, Tyler sent me a picture so graphically beautiful that I was convinced I passed out.
The next day, I showed Rue and Jules the picture during break time.
“Holy crap!” Jules took my phone and leaned into it for closer inspection.
“Tyler is packing,” Rue agreed.
Jules slid my phone back to me. “You haven’t replied to him?” “No, and he hasn’t talked to me at all today.”
“He’s probably expecting a reply that’s similar to what he sent,” Rue said.
My face warmed up. “I can’t send him nudes,” I hissed.
“Why not? It’s like the greeting cards of our generation,” Jules stated.
“Really? You’d send your grandparents a greeting card of your naked body?” I replied sarcastically.
“Relax, if you’re uncomfortable, we can help you,” Jules assured.
“We can?” Rue asked.
“We can.” Jules gave her a look and Rue relaxed.
“It’s still weird, but, I guess you guys can come over after school.”
“Sweet! Your mom still bakes cookies for you after school, right?” Jules asked.
I nodded.
“She might stop once she learns her darling favorite older child is sending nudes,” Rue snorted as she spoke.
I recoiled in my seat, taking a second to bask in the sun’s warmth. “Don’t remind me.”
After swim practice, once my teammates left the locker room, I eyed my naked form in the mirror. I had nothing to be ashamed of, really, thanks to all the swimming, but, I just felt weird being naked in front of people. There was something so vulnerable about it, like, being on display in a museum or lying on a cold surgery table. But, online dating was supposed to get me out of my comfort zone and I’d found someone who’d made me feel comfortable enough to do it. With this resolve, I changed into a hoodie and some sweatpants and left the school. It was dusk and I typically walked home after practice since it wasn’t far. Plus, I’d told Jules and Rue to just go to my house after school.
The late breeze rippled past me and I dug my hands into my pants’ pockets as I started walking towards the parking lot. There was barely anyone around, except stoners hotboxing their cars, some couples making out, and dance team members and football players getting out of practice.
I kept my head down as I maneuvered around the few cars and people around. It felt like someone could spot what I was about to do once I got home and it was nervewracking. All I had to do was get home, let Jules make me look even better, take these pictures, and never thinking of it again.
“Something on your mind, Y/N?” Nate called.
I froze and snapped my head up to look at him. He was leaning against his truck, looking like a model for Ford in only a tshirt and jeans. Ford should hire him.
“No, not really,” I said.
I started to side step the truck, eyeing the sidewalk that was only a few yards away as though it was a lifeline.
“Get in,” Nate ordered.
I paused and looked at him. “Excuse me?”
“I see you walking home all the time, let me do you a favor, one athlete to another.” Nate was about halfway in the driver’s seat of the car and all I could do was stare.
“We’ve...never really talked before,” I stated.
“We can talk during the drive.”
I stepped back and my eyes flittered around, like the best decision would hit me in the face. Then, I saw Maddy across the lot. She was standing with a couple of dance team girls, including Cassie. She stared me down as though daring me to do it. I glanced from her to Nate, who started the engine loudly.
I quickly climbed into the passenger’s seat and stared into Maddy’s reflection in the rearview mirror as he pulled out of the parking lot.
“How do you know where I live?” I asked.
“You forgot that I gave you a ride before?” Nate asked.
“When?”
“After Cassie’s sweet sixteen. You blacked out, your friends were panicking, and I offered to take you home. For some reason, you remembered your address,” Nate recalled.
“Oh, thanks?”
“Sure.”
We pulled up to my house a few minutes later, Lil Wayne bragging about his conquests filling the quiet. I hopped out of the truck and grabbed my bag.
“Thanks for the ride, this one, I mean, I owe you,” I said.
“Yeah, see you around, Y/N.”
I closed the door and headed inside.
“I’m home!” I called.
My mom poked her head out from the kitchen. “Y/N, how was school and practice?”
“Fine.”
“Was that Nate Jacobs outside?”
I hesitated.
How did she know what Nate’s truck looked like? “Yeah, he gave me a ride today.”
“Aw, isn’t that sweet? Rue and Jules are waiting for you in your room. They took the cookies with them.”
I nodded and went to my room. As soon as I walked in, they bombarded me with questions.
“Why did Nate give you a ride?” Rue asked.
“What did you guys talk about?” Jules inquired.
“Don’t you hate him?”
“He’s kind of a dick, but, unfortunately, super good looking.”
“Did Maddy see?”
“Do you think she’s gonna kill you?”
“Guys, I don’t know but I do know that if you do not take amazing pictures of me with no clothes on soon, I will delete my entire profile,” I interrupted.
They both nodded.
“But, we will ask for details later,” Jules insisted.
“Okay, but, please give me a cookie, I’ll need it to get through this.”
Rue extended the plate towards me and I bit into the melty goodness as Jules began doing my makeup. It was simple, only bringing out my best features. I made them both turn around as I undressed. Once I had, Jules encouraged me.
“You look amazing, I would be shocked if he didn’t jizz in his pants,” Jules said.
“Lower your voice, Y/B/N can only play Five Nights at Freddy’s so loud,” I hissed.
Jules held her hands up and Rue direct me to lay on the bed, my phone held up in front of her.
“Okay, look sexy,” Rue said.
I tried to smolder, but, by their expressions, I did not achieve it.
“No, like, pout your lips, like, you just heard that TheOdd1sOut is not uploading for a month,” Jules directed.
“And give the camera bedroom eyes, you know, as though it’s Tyler.”
“Okay.” After a few pictures, I slowly got the hang of it and even started posing a little naturally.
“Oh my gosh, Tyra is shook!” Jules cheered.
“Yeah, these are pretty good if I do say so myself.” Rue handed me my phone and I flipped through the pictures.
She was a talented photogrpaher and I joked that maybe she should go professional.
“Yeah, I’m sure I’d have a nice clientele.”
I laughed as I changed back into my hoodie and sweatpants. “Okay, help me pick one to send.”
Jules took my phone and she and Rue began scrolling.
“No, the lighting’s off in this one,” Jules muttered.
“No, it’s never off in any of these,” Rue argued.
“I’m not shading your talent, I’m just trying to find the best thing for Y/N to send Tyler.”
After a little more bickering, we all agreed on the picture and I sent it to Tyler.
“Should I follow it up with something?” I asked.
“Maybe say ‘Wrong person’? Guys want what other guys want,” Jules suggested.
“Or say ‘Sorry for the late reply’,” Rue added.
“I’ll go with Rue’s, sorry, Jules.”
Jules shrugged.
I sent everything off and my friends and I watched as Tyler typed a response.
Tyler: It was worth the wait ;).
We squealed so loud that my mom yelled for us to keep it down. We apologized as we descended into a fit of giggles. Through it all, I could not help but feel so bouncy and light all over. Was I...falling for this total stranger?
“What do you think he looks like?” Jules asked during lunch later that week.
I shrugged. “It’s different every day, if that makes sense.”
“I guess that’s the nice thing about interacting with someone who doesn’t show their face,” Jules thought outloud.
“How do you see him now?” Lexi asked.
I sighed. “Right now, I think he’s tall, six feet at least. He’s got a mix of blonde and brown hair like a surfer because it’s lightened from all the time he’s spent in the sun. He has green eyes, freckles, and he dresses well.”
“Sounds amazing,” Jules said as she rest her chin in her hand.
Rue nodded slowly. “You’re not nervous or anything?”
“No, this is so cheesy, but, I feel like I know him, you know? He’s so easy to talk to and has so much to say.”
“Y/N’s blushing,” Jules teased. “Do you love him?”
“I really, really, really, like him.”
“Do you think you’ll meet soon?” Lexi asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t know, neither of us has brought it up.”
“Well, it just matters that you’re comfortable, okay?” Rue said.
“Okay.”
If I was honest, I did not know if I wanted to meet Tyler. I knew that I liked him more than I liked anyone before, but, there was something strange about breaking this wall the internet provided us. It was freer to talk on the internet than it was in person. What if I said something stupid in front of him? What if he thought that I looked different in person? What if he looked different in person?
I managed to keep these thoughts at bay for the rest of the day until I got home. Post-dinner had been officially declared Talk to Tyler Time. None of my family knew what I was doing besides blasting Amy Winehouse in my room for about an hour. My laugh nearly overpowered her high note in “Best Friends, Right?”. I had to blink away my happy tears as I replied to him.
Y/N: That did not happen! Tyler: Yes it did! Do u want 2 c the scar????
Y/N: No, I think I’m good.
I wiped away my tears and settled under the covers. I wondered if his friends would agree that Tyler gets into some weird situations as well. Just as I started typing, Tyler beat me.
Tyler: I want 2 meet u.
The speed that I launched my phone away from me almost shocked me more than the text.
Almost.
My heartbeat thrummed in my ears. This was it, I knew I couldn’t avoid him much longer, but, I felt like I couldn’t move. All I could do was stare at my phone like it was the most offensive object in the world. Slowly, I regained mobility and grabbed my phone. I took a deep breath.
“Take a chance, Y/L/N,” I whispered.
Y/N: When and where?
“You’re meeting him tonight?” Jules squealed the next day.
I hushed her as people in the hallway paused to look at us. “Not so loud.” “But this is so exciting. Please let me help you decide what to wear,” Jules pleaded with a pout.
“Sure,” I said.
Jules hugged me. “This is going to be so fun. I won’t go crazy with glitter since this is the first time you’re meeting this guy.”
“Thanks?”
“Do your parents know?” Rue asked.
“No,” I replied as I slowly pulled away from Jules. “They’re coming Senior Night tonight, though. and I’m going to meet him at Mercy Park an hour before it ends.”
“Are you sure you even want to do this? I know that Jules and I tease you about your love life, but, this is risky,” Rue said.
“You weren’t saying that when you were helping me with those pictures the other day,” I shot back.
“That was different. You’re...you’re actually meeting him now and he could be a psychopath or a sociopath or, just, a creepy old guy who likes to look at teenagers!” Rue insisted.
“Rue, relax, everything’s going to be fine.”
“You don’t know that!” She turned on her heel and hurried into the bathroom with Jules and I on her tail.
When we entered, Rue was leaning against the wall, panting and staring up at the ceiling. Jules and I approached her slowly as the girls who were in the bathroom quickly filed out.
“Rue, slow down your breathing,” I said slowly.
“I...I can’t. You-you could get hurt or something and-and I would know about it an-and I-I couldn’t live with that!” Tears burst from her eyes as Rue began pacing and Jules and I were close but gave her room.
“Rue, Y/N is going to be okay, we both know what time she’ll be at the park. If anything happens, we’ll know the area she could be in,” Jules assured her.
Rue shook her head and stopped in her tracks. Then, she looked between us helplessly before bowing her head and sobbing. Jules and I carefully hugged her and let her cry.
“I’m sorry that I’m scared and I care about you and I don’t want you to get hurt,” Rue mumbled into my shirt.
“It’s okay, I appreciate it. I really want to meet Tyler, though, and, I promise I will let you know if something happens, okay?”
Rue nodded and sniffled.
It took Jules about an hour to make me look amazing. I had no idea my hair could be so fluffy and put together until she was done with it. She used eyeliner to make eyes look bigger and rounder and added sparkly lip gloss to make my lips look plumper. After she contoured and highlighted the best places she deemed that her work was done. My outfit, a fitted forest green long-sleeve shirt and fitted black pants with Jadons, was also approved by her.
“Tell me everything later!” she insisted.
Rue couldn’t join us since she had “prior commitments” but I texted her that I would let her know when I head to the park and when I leave. My nerves didn’t let me focus on the soccer game my parents insisted I joined them and my brother at. I couldn’t care less that the forward on one team got a yellow card or that the goalie on the other team made illegal blocks. I was practically buzzing with excitement and fear so much that I had to give my pretzel to Y/B/N. Finally, the third quarter arrived and I told my parents that I would meet them at home since I’d promised Lexi that I would help her with some homework.
Lexi wouldn’t mind being used for a lie this one time; it was an emergency.
I tried to practice some calming deep breaths as I walked over to the park. The dark night sky provided a little bit of comfort to my walk. I wondered how different Tyler would look from the picture in my mind. I wondered if he thought I would look any different. Maybe (hopefully) it wouldn’t matter to either of us.
Finally, I reached the park. It was empty, save for the oak trees scattered throughout the lush green scenery that seemed mysterious under the mooonlight. A few benches and wooden tables were around as well, but, Tyler and I had agreed to meet at the fountain which was further in the park. The breathing exercises had to have helped because I felt much more relaxed and I hoped that everything would go all right.
When I got to the fountain, there was a tall person facing it. All I could make out were dark clothes and broad shoulders. I took another deep breath and kept walking.
“This is a nice spot, you have good taste,” I commented.
“I could say the same for you.” I stopped in my tracks as Nate slowly turned to face me. His face was unreadable but his eyes stayed on me.
“What? Wh-where’s Tyler?” I asked, my voice already hoarse.
Nate glanced down at his shoes. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know how else to talk to you.”
I shook my head. “No.” My vision got blurry but I could tell that Nate was looking up at me now.
“Just let me explain,” he requested softly.
He took a step towards me and I took two steps back .
“I don’t wanna hear it. This....this is some sick joke to you or something?”
“No, never, Y/N, just listen to me.”
“I don’t want to!” The tears rolled down my cheeks and I swiped at them so hard that I thought I scratched myself. At least I could feel something because my heart felt numb. “You catfished me!”
“I just wanted to talk to you, I really do like you, Y/N. Tyler and I are the same, just different names,” Nate insisted, coming closer.
For some reason, I didn’t move. I didn’t know if it was from emotional exhaustion or stress, but, I let him approach me. I kept shaking my head.
“No,” I hiccuped.
“I wanted to meet you tonight because I was tired of lying. I want to figure this, us, out,” Nate said.
I sniffed. “Us?”
At that moment, I could actually see his face and Nate seemed so hopeful. There was a slight smile on his lips and his eyes seemed light for once. Maybe he wanted there to be an “us”. Maybe, despite all logic, he wanted to talk to me seriously and could not do it offline because of his reputation. Maybe, he was over the on-again-off-again situation with Maddy. Maybe, this was my chance, our chance.
I wiped my face again, mentally cringing at how upset Jules would be for my ruining her masterpiece.
“Yeah, us.” Nate stepped closer to me, gently wrapped his arms around my waist, and pulled me into his chest.
Gradually, my muscles relaxed and I relished in the feeling of his strong upper body and his warmth. Then, I began to feel pressure on my waist and gasped as it intensified.
“Nate, you’re...squeezing...too hard,” I rasped out.
And he started laughing, no, cackling. As he laughed, his grip tightened and I continued gasping and clawing at everything I could.
“Nate...stop!”
But he kept laughing and squeezing. When he finally released me, I looked up and saw nothing behind his eyes. Everything in me told me to run, but, I knew he could have easily caught up to me.
“I really thought you were smarter than that, Y/N. C’mon, you couldn’t honestly think that I would do all this to be with you,” he sneered.
“So why do it then?” I asked, my voice so small that I could have kicked myself for it.
Nate sighed and folded his arms. “Because you made it so easy and, to ask for a favor.”
“What? That makes no sense,” I argued. “I told you I owed you one that day you gave me a ride!”
“Yeah, well, I needed to make sure that you were available when I needed you.”
“Whatever, screw you,” I hissed as I pivoted on my heel.
“Too late for you, you’re already screwed.” Nate pulled out a folder from inside his jacket pocket. “Remember those special pictures you sent to Tyler? Well, they count as distribution of child pornography, which has a hefty fine and sentence.”
My mouth opened and closed several times before I faced him and responded. “But...but you held them, doesn’t that count towards possession? And, you’re extorting me!”
Nate glowered at me and stormed over. “Heresay, no solid evidence for your case. Plus, I’m a Jacobs, so, who are you kidding?”
I felt so sick to my stomach that I could have thrown up, fainted, or cried at that moment. This was not real, this could not be real.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Like I said, just be available when I need you.”
“Fine.”
“Sorry, what was that?” He gripped my chin his hand and forced me to look up at him.
“Okay,” I said softly.
“Hmm.” His eyes scanned my face before he released me. “And if I ever hear you judging my relationship with Maddy again, these pictures are going to be the least of your concern.”
I nodded weakly, regretting every single thing I ever told him. Nate Jacobs was truly the devil. He wandered off into the night like a centurion leaving a victorious battle. It seemed like he always won.
I managed not to start crying until I was on the empty sidewalk. No, I sobbed so bad that my throat went dry.
How could I have been so stupid? I should have known it was him that day Maddy yelled at him for texting all day.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
My sobs continued as I grabbed my phone and texted Rue.
Y/N: U were right.

The love language concept sounds interesting! I’d say George’s love language/the way he shows love is physical touch, Paul’s is receiving gifts, Ringo’s is positive affirmation mixed with quality time, and tbh I’m not to sure for John. maybe acts or service or quality time for him?
Mwahaha, you've fallen into my trap! The truth is I wanted to do this topic more or less for myself, but felt bad bc I still have a few requests left to do. So thank you for sending in a "request" for me so that I can do one out of order real quick >:3
Lol but really tho, thank you for humoring me and these are good! I could honestly see all of these, but for John I'd say acts of service with you, bc the "To Do" stuff just sounds like his character tbh, but maybe also I feel like there's some physical touch too???
Ik I've heard that John kind of actually didn't like being touched, but I mean... If you look at literally any picture of him with Yoko, he's always at least holding her hand, if not just totally draped all over her lol, so I'm assuming for an S/O it's totally different!
But anyway, here's some headcannons real quick and then back to requests. Thanks everyone!
---
George
Honestly? I feel like George would just not be able to keep his hands off you
Like, not necissarily in a sexual way (although that too, if you're in the mood lol), it's just that he loves to let you and everyone else know you're his
He's not all too shy about it either lol
I mean obviously he saves the more lovey dovey stuff for private places, but in public he still has a lot to offer
Everytime he sees you he kisses you either on the cheek, forehead, or mouth and then pulls you in for a hug
Always
Then the rest of the time, as long as he doesn't have to be working, he likes to hold your hand and play with your hair
And if he's feeling a little risqué, he likes to let you sit on his lap and cuddle against him
In private tho...
Oh, he is all over you!!!
You are his sanctuary and safe haven away from the public eye and the daily grind that comes with being a Beatle
I've seen quite a few quotes from geo lamenting the fact that he and the others had literally no private life thanks to their stardom
So yeah, believe me when I say he could live a thousand years and still never feel like he could repay you for giving him the rest and love he needs
He'd be like a long, giant cat. Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, if he has an opportunity to snuggle up to you, he takes it
And if he's not exhausted, and if you let him !! he likes to just touch and kiss your body and face
Having that closeness and intimacy is so important to him, he wants to let you know how deeply he loves you
All of you
And of course, the best way you can return his love language back to him is by returning the intimacy he does for you!
When in Rome, after all
Honestly, just by accepting his offers when he initiates a request to hold your hand or hug or cuddle, he already appreciates that!
But if you initiate any of those things, he's definitely feeling the love!!
Although, one thing you like to do a bit different is giving massages
Of course George would certainly give you one if you asked!
But since he's usually tired, either mentally or physically, from always being on the go, you like to do him a favor lol
And he loves it
Seriously, you've never seen a man more blissed out then George gets over something as simple as a back or scalp massage
Assuming he doesn't fall asleep under the spell of your skillful fingers, he repays you with kisses or cuddles after :)
John
Ok idk if I'm like projecting, or reaching, or SOMETHING along those lines, but I feel like of all the boys, John is probably the one most looking for a true partner, as in like his other half
Paul is very close behind with his relationship with Linda, but for John it always came off as a need for him, more then like a want or nice thing to have
So anyway, all this to say that as far as acts of service goes, I think he gets a lot of security out of receiving this!
Like, whenever John's feeling particularly stressed or overwhelmed having you there to approach the issues with an objective mindset is a HUGE relief
Really, like I cannot stress this enough
Phrases like, "What can I do to take some pressure off for you?"
Or, "Well what if we just focus on x for now, and then we can take care of y and z tomorrow?"
All give him such a powerful sense of relief
And of course, the way that you, you know, actually follow up on your word, makes him fall even deeper in love with you then he thought possible
Now on the other hand, is physical touch
While this is a part of his love language cocktail, John likes to express this one a bit more then he likes to receive it
You see, unlike George, John is a little more reserved with his PDA
He will kiss you and hold your hand of course! But unfortunately his anxiety is a thing, so as much as he hates it, he has to reserve his physical affection for more private settings
But when you two are alone, he's like puddy in your hands!
He likes to just hold you a lot
It doesn't matter if you're preoccupied with something else, like a book or the telly, he just wants to have physical contact with you
And if you can do any of those things cuddled up on his lap or against his chest, even better!
But also, John definitely loves to get that energy back
He likes it when you give him cute little kisses and pet his head
I think he'd also like it if you rubbed his temples or the bridge of his nose/third eye lol
Wearing glasses all day can get uncomfortable you know!!
I think if you can establish that trust and physical closeness, that's when you'd also get a return on his acts of service
Really, if you've bonded this deeply with John he'd do literally anything for you
Whatever you need, whatever you want, if he can do it he will and if he can't he'll find a way to do it anyway!
He'd be loyal to a fault and love you forever after
Paul
Please tell me why I could see Paul being your sugar daddy on the low 😭😭
Really, like he just likes to spoil you!
Honestly if someone showed me proof that the real actual, 78 year old, 2021 Paul McCartney uses stacks of hundred dollar bills as tinder for his fireplace, I literally wouldn't even blink
Like even back in the day, he's got that Beatles' money baby !!! and he.... Kinda doesn't care for it, actually
I personally don't think any of the boys come across as like money hungry or something like that, but I could see Paul especially figuring that he might as well use all this dumb money to buy you things you like!
It may feel overwhelming to be on the receiving end of so many random, but expensive gifts tbh
You might even tell him to stop or that he doesn't have to do all that!!
I think he'd be able to understand that overwhelming you with nice things kinda has the opposite effect of what he's intending, but....
He just gets a little carried away sometimes lol
I mean growing up he didn't have all that much, and even now, like obviously nice things are nice, but meh
What he really wants to do is make sure you're enjoying the high life too!
I could see him doing more of writing you songs and music instead so that he can still fulfil his desire to give, should you feel uncomfortable with the fancy gifts
But yeah, if you're uncomfortable he totally would get that and dial back the materialism, but if you don't mind, then he doesn't either!!
Now you might be wondering how you, a delightfully average person, could impress Paul McCartney with a gift giving love language...
I mean, what do you give the man who has everything?
Well I'd tell you this... It's simple!
You could bring him literally anything that you find meaningful and be like "This made me think of you!" or "I just thought you'd like this!" and he'll love it!
He would definitely run up some organized collections of the little things you've given him
He has some dedicated display boxes for all the random, shiny rocks and pebbles you've found
A little filing drawer of all the notes you've ever wrote him
And if you like art or photography, he'd decorate his personal spaces with your work!
Of course he'd appreciate traditional gifts too tho
Like a watch or bass strings or a new tie ect ect
But the thing for you to not get caught up on is the price!
That doesn't matter to him :)
He likes your gifts bc they came from you!
Ringo
Ok, positive affirmation is definitely a big thing for Ringo
He gets roasted a lot by the boys and even the media, and all in good fun I suppose, but after a while enough is enough you know?
Not to mention, he just feels a bit... Lesser then?? Compared to the others and their musical talent
So the poor guy really needs a break!
Literally, even just little one word sentences of encouragement mean sooo much to him
"I'm so proud of you Ritchie!"
"That sounded wonderful!"
"You've done a great job today at the studio, good work!"
Stuff like that makes him melt
Of course he also appreciates the more conventional things like "I love you" and when you call him handsome!
And as for the spending quality time, that comes easily!
Ringo looooves to take you out on dates!
Now yes, there's your typical movie date, dinner, dancing, all that
But his favorite things to do is go on little adventures!
He takes you to the park, the beach, out to explore thrift and consignment stores, and anywhere else you want to check out!
However, not everyone wants to run around outside 24/7
So in the house, he likes doing things that you two can do together!
Painting is a big one, seeing as it's his other hobby, but it could honestly be anything, like puzzles, board games, or just watching TV!
I'm trying to think of how he'd return the words words of affirmation side of his love language, but I think it would be a little harder for him to do then expressing quality time tbh
You just make him so darn shy!
What with all your good looks and kindness, he just feels a little overwhelmed
Have you ever seen a work of art, or architecture, or even a landscape so breathtaking that you don't really know where to start when describing it to someone?
Yeah, it's like that
He definitely wants to try tho!
I think he'd stick to simple things like complimenting your outfits and praising your work or personal projects you show him!
He's worried that that comes across as just common decency tho, so he says "I love you" a lot and tries to make up for his bad way with words with quality time

American Horror Story Apocalypse: Michael Langdon - Type 8w9
Michael is powerful, sinister and complex. Michael is the embodiment of evil, and wants to have power over the entire world, however he wasn’t always like this.
At his best, Michael just wanted the approval of the people he loved. In his relationship with Ben Harmon, as he does try to repress his impulses due to Ben’s influence. However, this is very short-lived and Michael gives into his dark desires after being shunned by Tate. He also seems to really love Mead and tries to help her and make sure she is ok.
At his worst, Michael is power hungry and malevolent to the people around him and especially the Coven. He wants to destroy all the witches, so he cannot be stopped in his plans for the Apocalypse. Michael also becomes singularly focused on bringing about his plans and neglects all over things in his life.
Michael loves to find people’s weaknesses and use their weaknesses against them. When he first comes to Outpost 3, he interviews the survivors one by one and zeroes in on their fears and weaknesses. Michael then uses these fears to achieve his goals and to gain power over others. He also uses his charms and attractiveness as a way of getting people to do what he wants and making them give into their own impulses. For example, he seduces Mr. Gallant and then gaslights him, resulting in Mr. Gallant killing his grandmother. Michael also uses the warlocks so that he can gain more influence over the witches and fully enact his plans for the Apocalypse.
Michael’s fate was predetermined and impossible for him to escape. At times in his childhood, he didn’t seem to want to kill, instead it seems like he just wanted to gain acceptance from Constance and others he loved. After he meets the satanists, he feels like he is finally accepted and fully embraces his evil tendencies. Michael also had trouble controlling his actions and emotions. For example, after being rejected by Tate he murders innocents in the Murder House.
Michael fears nothing and views fear as weakness. As a child he seemed to be less confident in himself and seemed to exhibit fear and remorse over his murderous tendencies. However, as he grew up he became fearless and stopped caring about the consequences of his actions. This makes Michael incredibly threatening to the people around him. For example, Venable is very afraid of Michael when he comes to the Outpost, as are the other survivors.
He shows his wing 9 as he is more calculating and strategic than an 8w7 would be. Michael is also less likely to show his emotions and anger due to his 9 influence.
Tri-type: 8w9 - 4w3 - 6w5
Some quotes to describe Michael’s motivations
"I've been assigned to evaluate the people here and select the ones most worthy of survival. I could take all of you, or none of you. Those who make it live. Those who don't, end up like my horses."
"No need for rules anymore; Chaos has won."
"You see I have a talent, call it a kind of night vision of the soul. I can see into the dark places that people desperately try to keep hidden."
"When I'm done, you'll all wish you were still dead."
"True darkness requires a certain depth of character. You're much too shallow for any kind of meaningful negativity."

suzuwarahikaru replied to your post “what happens at 5 am?”
where is the essay, OP!?
@suzuwarahikaru Honestly, it’s drivel and I didn’t feel like it particularly went anywhere and it was just me monologuing about one aspect of a bigger question so that’s why I didn’t post it. But ok, just for some context: You probably know how the MCU was often criticised for having “bland one off villains” and that’s true especially in their early films - and that was time when Heath Ledger’s Joker loomed very large and Ian McKellen was famous for his performance of Magneto and the idea for a Magneto solo film had just been scrapped in favour of XM First Class. At that point apparently the MCU guys walked up with the demand that Thor 1 only has to give them 1 thing: A villain as good as Magneto which they could use in Avengers. Now, obviously it had to be Loki, because Loki is Thor’s most famous antagonist and he was the first guy the Avengers ever fought in the comics, and Loki in Thor 1 is satisfyingly complex - but now that Loki’s dead and has a solo show coming out in a while, people dug up that old quote and started arguing about whether Loki actually became a villain “as good as Magneto” - which I honestly wouldn’t care about, except this argument spilled a few “But Loki is great and Magneto is boring”-posts into the Magneto tag a while ago (which mixes with a lot of: Why did Cherik get a happy end but Stucky didn’t that’s so unfair!!!! posts) and then some comments started lowkey implying that Loki is a character who’s more attractive to sophisticated fans and that Magneto fans are usually men and Loki fans women (with the not so subtle implication being that Magneto fans are comic dude bros who like him for his cool powers and because he’s a Bad Guy(TM) I don’t really care about that, but over the course of this argument someone made a rather interesting post, wondering about what “went wrong” with Loki and while I love Loki as a character and as a villain, it made me ponder what could have been done to make Loki (even) better and to help him stand on his own 2 feet as a character and this was their post:
Now and this was going to be my response: Personally, I don’t think that having spectacular powers or anything make a villain good (they make good visuals though) but whether the hero learns something from fighting them, whether their motivation maybe reflects something that we experience as well and that maybe they unmask something that we usually don’t feel comfortable to address. And Loki has all these qualities.
I’m not going to try to objectively pinpoint where it ‘went wrong’ but it’s actually interesting to look at the XMCU and the MCU and to compare notes. The XMCU is often criticised for being too wordy, too slow-paced and “what’s with the constant time jumps and decade-hopping?” But I think that’s something the Thor franchise could actually have profited from, because…these guys are immortals and it just feels rushed in my opinion to watch their world fall apart in what is for them a matter of a long weekend.
For example, a bigger distance between the events of Thor 1 and Avengers would have lent more weight to Loki’s disappearance and Thanos torturing and brainwashing him, Thor’s and Jane’s relationship would have been given more time to develop (making their reunion in Thor 2 more meaningful). They could also have given her more time exploring Asgard/battling the Ether. We could have learnt more about the Dark Elves, the Frost Giants, the Nine Realms in general.
And that’s at least part of the problem, in my opinion: We don’t know enough about Asgard. You can’t just throw in an alien word without world-building and you can’t introduce characters who are millennia old by showing us 6 years of their lives and maybe 1 flashback. There is a reason why a show like Good Omens spent basically an entire episode on Crowley and Aziraphale’s lives through the millennia. Captain America got a film set in the WW2, Wolverine Origins covers over a century of Logan’s story. Magneto isn’t a better (or worse) villain than Loki, because as you said, the writing makes the character and both get pretty good and pretty bad writing at times. But a big difference is: We know a lot more about Magneto than we know about Loki.
One example of this is personal relationships. Something I never realised before I started typing this is how little space Loki is given to let him form/have/maintain/test/strengthen meaningful relationships.
Basically, all his meaningful interactions are inside his family. Magneto (to be clear, I’m bringing up so often bc the MCU apparently insisted on being rude af and asking Kenneth Branagh on drawing inspiration from a character who’s basically the opposite of Loki in every regard) gets a lot more screen time to develop his relationships with other characters, even if it means less CGI action scenes.
In fact, I’m currently tempted to find out how many 1 on 1 dialogue scenes Loki gets per hour of film vs. how many Magneto gets. Loki enters the picture with a family, ‘friends’, a biological father, servants, an entire kingdom of people who know him, but he barely gets to have any meaningful interactions outside of his family environment. Seeing him interact with a friend or even someone who hates him for reasons unrelated to his relationship with Thor or someone who supports him would in turn show us a lot about how he sees other people, how he sees himself, how he treats them, what he values in a person, what kind of people trusts (if he trusts) – that’s a lot of potential that was left pretty much wasted in my opinion.
One of the first things Agent of Asgard did was add Verity Willis to its main-cast so have a character for Loki to interact with, to serve as a moral anchor, and to call him out on his bullshit. Having relationships is powerful. In the MCU, Loki’s relationship with his mother is such an important, humanising element to his character. Also a lot of headcanons and metas and thoughts about Loki are inspired by those few scenes where we see him interact with the Warrior’s Three and Sif before Loki finds out about his parentage.
And even when encounters the Avengers, they meet once, they talk once, then Loki he returns to Asgard and they never meet again, except Bruce - and even then there’s barely any time to talk about what happened in Avengers 1. He doesn’t get to form any meaningful relationships with his adversaries when he talks to them in Av1, these scenes just exist to present the Avengers in a certain light. And in the end it’s canonised that Loki was brainwashed so it’s all pointless anyway. (pls (don’t) make me write an essay on agency and the MCU, because honestly, between Bucky, Gamora, Nebula, Loki and everyone else was brainwashed it’s actually worth a conversation)
Even in Thor 1 Loki never meets Jane or Darcy, one of the main-characters. And we never see a single frost giant after the first film. Erik Solveig is the only Earth character from Thor 1 Loki actually meets and he’s brainwashed for most of that and in Thor 2, they don’t get to meet again.
Imagine if Loki had had someone he trusted in Thor 1 and told them about finding out he’s a Frost Giant and they reject him and treat him like a monster. This could be three or four scenes that don’t throw off the film but would have been very powerful. Or imagine if Loki keeps his heritage a secret from that friend/trusted person and they find out in Thor 2 and confront him about it. Valkyrie and Loki never talk about him invading her mind or the things he saw.
We never get to see him alone on Sakaar to deal with what he presumes is the end of his home world and the death of everyone he knows and we never see him interact ‘win the Grandmaster’s trust’.
We never see him interact with the Hulk before they’re suddenly fighting side by side in Infinity War. We never find out exactly what the Aesir’s sentiments towards him are, what kind of prince he was in the past, how present he is in public, what reputation he has beyond silver-tongue mischief guy and which specific events shaped it.
If the MCU wants a villain “as good as Magneto” (which is already annoying bc they imply that Loki is not as good a villain which is such a subjective measure – Magneto done wrong is a horrible and downright offensive villain and trickster characters done right are amazing for revealing the flaws of a hero.*) then they have to give writers and actors the same means to do that with. The X-Men franchise, for all it flaws, always gave Magneto screen-time (so much that people criticised it).
There’s a Charles-and-Erik dialogue in pretty much every film, allowing us to follow the state of their eternal argument at every step. We see his friendship with Mystique grow and fall, we see Wolverine call him out on his bullshit, his attempt to make young Hank and Mystique feel better about their visible mutations, we know how he treats his followers, his new recruits, his enemies, his students, his wife and his daughter, (daughters, if we count The Gifted and his legacy), his colleagues, his lovers, his ex-lovers, allies and former allies, politicians, police, prison guards, Nazis, soldiers, insane Egyptian gods – and we get to learn his feelings and thoughts about all of these through personal interactions, decisions and gestures. And in turn we know how they feel about Magneto. What do we know about Loki’s feelings about people outside his family? How does he feel about Fandral? What are his thoughts on the Valkyrior? How did his views on Frost Giants change and when? Did he challenge them at all or did he just become cynical about them?
As I said, Loki is a formidable villain but I think that he suffers from the same problem as many MCU characters: We hardly know them. Think about Natascha whose been part of the franchise since Iron Man 2 but we hardly know anything about her. How much do we know about the family Drax lost? Or about Wanda’s family? About Pepper’s private life? We hardly know anything about them and especially when characters are thousands of years old and we know nothing about their past, it really creates a gaping hole in their biography and that really leads back to my original point: If we could spend more time with them, we would know them better and care more. One of the reason Dark Phoenix is a bit under-whelming is because we know very little about Jean and Scott in this time line.
There are two DCEU films I actually own and watched more than once: Wonder Woman and Aqua Man. And while I personally didn’t find Aqua Man that good, this film actually tells us a lot about him and despite my lack of knowledge about the DCEU and me being a giant Marvel nerd, I preferred Wonder Woman over Captain Marvel and that is because I felt closer to her character. It really boils down to a “show don’t tell issue” and for me, that would mean: Maybe fewer giant CGI battles. more people living their lives. *(which should also highlight why setting Magneto as a mark for K.B. is so off-mark. Loki is about unmasking hypocrisy, Magneto himself is a hypocrite who regards himself as a hero but often does immoral things and that for example gets unmasked by Wolverine, another social outsider with littl care for social conventions)

Just How In Love With Daenerys is Jon Snow?
If you’ve read any of my posts you probably already understand that I believe Jon’s interactions with Daenerys are motivated by his duties to the North and his behavior in Season 7 can be easily explained with the fact that he’s trying multiple approaches to try and change her priorities.
So many times, the contra opinion has been “No, Jon is definitely in love with Daenerys. The cast and crew says so. The marketing says so. The show runners say so.”
Ok, among the myriad of reasons why I think this is a terrible argument is that;
1) The same people swore up and down that Jon was dead forever;
2) The same people blatantly discussed some deadly rivalry in S7 between Sansa and Jon
3) The script page cited as “he realizes he’s fallen in love” did not initially leak with all of the other script pages that proved to, more or less, true...so someone needs to show me otherwise in the first place;
BUT the most important thing I’d use to examine this is;
“Ok, well what does Jon Snow say throughout Season 7?”
Post continued under the cut...
I noticed such a different pattern of behavior with Jon when it came to how he privately spoke with Daenerys and how he spoke about Daenerys with other characters.
I operate under the assumption that the creators put scenes into their own shows on purpose (revolutionary, right?) and I just can’t escape the conclusion that Jon Snow is two different people in Season 7: the laser-focused, big-picture, intelligent hero of the story AND on the other side the love struck, flattery-extolling, miss-the-forest-for-the-trees, dopey lovable hero.
I’ve already written previously about the way Jon dresses up his language around Daenerys, particularly after he observes Jorah interact with Daenerys in e5.
I’ve now concluded that’s only half the story...because maybe you could argue that he just started seeing what Jorah and Tyrion and Missandei see in Daenerys.
If he really sees this greatness, strength, and worthiness in her, surely he would indicate to SOMEBODY else how strongly he feels about Daenerys.
I can’t even find ANY room in Jon’s interactions with other characters where they discussed Daenerys to support that he loves her or even finds her particularly “good” in any way.
I’ll go clip by clip.
Jon’s Motivation for Leaving
Now it would be unfair for me to say that this clip shows anything about how Jon feels about Daenerys because he doesn’t know her yet.
What it does tell us is that Jon’s mission is to get a powerful ally to come North to fight the Night King.
It also tells us Jon already knows he’s going to need to “persuade” her.
Alone, does this tell us anything necessarily? No...but it tells me that Jon has a clear objective in going to Dragonstone, he has a very specific goal in mind, and he knows he will have to work to persuade her.
First Meeting / Talk With Tyrion
Jon learns pretty quickly he needs to change tactics. I’ve gone over this before...but I really want to focus on what Jon says ABOUT Daenerys in these interactions...because it’s projected to us, as the audience, that Jon is falling in love with Daenerys and it’s so heavy-handed about telling us this fact that I would imagine his feelings would leak through when speaking with others...
I can’t even cite anything about what Jon says to Tyrion about Daenerys except for one thing (later) because that conversation seems to only set up Jon trying to do some research on the Dragon Queen to figure out how to convince her more effectively.
Davos
Jon’s asked multiple times during the season what he thinks of Dany and each time Jon gives a rather bland answer or chooses not to talk about her in any meaningful way on a personal level.
This is the first occasion. Jon initially doesn’t realize Davos is asking about Daenerys. Maybe you can argue he’s playing coy, but then when Davos really asks him, he says something that basically amounts to “well, she doesn’t seem to be a bad person.” Ok...not much revealed here...
But there clearly ARE things about Daenerys that have already rubbed Jon the wrong way...how do I know this?
Missandei
Jon and Davos happen upon Missandei. Jon prods her a bit about who Daenerys is and what Daenerys believes. Missandei predictably tells Jon how wonderful the Breaker of Chains is and how much she believes in her.
Davos notes how Missandei was “freed” by Daenerys only to serve her in a way that doesn’t differ terribly from her previous state. Missandei grows irritated and says she serves Daenerys because she chooses to serve Daenerys.
Right away alarm bells are going off in Jon’s head. He poses a pretty damning question:
Pretty simple...oh...can you really leave?
“Yes, of course!” claims Missandei.
Jon gives her this incredulous look. “You really believe that?” He asks. Missandei responds “I know it!”
Now as viewers, are we not able to see through exactly why Jon is asking this question. He’s not asking Missandei because he wants to know more about Daenerys...he’s asking to test Missandei and her followers.
How do I know this?
BECAUSE JON JUST POSED HER THE EXACT SITUATION HE FINDS HIMSELF IN AND KNOWS WHAT THE REAL ANSWER WOULD BE IF SHE WAS HONEST ABOUT DAENERYS.
How can anyone take this scene to seriously mean that Jon learns more about Daenerys. My contention is this is Jon’s attempt at learning about the Cult of Personality surrounding Daenerys. This is why I think Jon is learning much more about the people around Daenerys than he is learning about Daenerys.
So Jon doesn’t tell anyone anything particularly meaningful about Daenerys while on Dragonstone. Ok, maybe you could think “well hey he’s guarded while on Dragonstone but by the time he leaves he’s really falling for her” so let’s look at the dialogues AFTER Jon leaves. (Hint: Jon gets more frank and demonstrates a pretty good understanding of what it is Daenerys wants)
Wight Hunt
Jon has a few conversations about Daenerys while on the infamous wight hunt. A few preliminary observations: he doesn’t distinguish Daenerys from Cersei in any meaningful way, he doesn’t initiate Daenerys as a topic any of the times he talks about her, and each time his comments only reflect that he knows her political ambitions and he knows what she wants him to do in order for him to gain her help with the Night King.
This is sort of a funny quote so I’m actually leaving that out because I think it distracts from the real content of the conversation.
1) Jon apparently hadn’t told Tormund that the wight hunt was for CERSEI...just for the two queens. So he didn’t distinguish Daenerys already before the dialogue starts. He still sees Daenerys and Cersei as squabbling children who are complaining that the game isn’t fair. His attitude about their conflict hasn’t changed since 7x03 in his first meeting with Daenerys. Only his approach has changed.
2) This would have been a great time to show Jon saying “well they’re nothing alike!” or “I hate Cersei but it must be done” or “Daenerys will help but we still need Cersei on board”. Instead we get none of that. Jon still knows he’s going on this stupid mission because, primarily, Daenerys isn’t committed to the cause. Why do I conclude that it’s about Daenerys? Because Jon never mentioned ONCE a desire to get Cersei’s support and he never agreed with Daenerys that a ceasefire was particularly important. He only knows that he can’t get Daenerys unless Cersei sees a wight and agrees to a ceasefire.
Again, Tormund starts this exchange by asking a pretty simple question.
“So you met this Dragon Queen....and?”
This continues the pattern of people asking open ended questions to Jon fishing for how he feels about her personally...and again Jon demonstrates a laser-like focus on his overall mission that he needs her to fight with the North and what he needs to do in order to get her to commit to doing that.
I think it’s important that Jon is asks about Daenerys this way: open ended, leaving him ample opportunity to say SOMETHING about personally. Time after time, Jon...just...doesn’t...care.
He is still only viewing Daenerys through the scope of what she can do for him with regard to the war with the Night King.
THIS IS THE SECOND TO LAST EPISODE OF THE SEASON. WE SHOULD BE SEEING SOMETHING FROM JON APPROACHING AFFECTION.
Beric
Later on, we have Jon asserting once again that he serves the North. His entire S7 arc is about serving the North, even if it leads to his scorn, it’s not about Jon falling in love and giving that kingdom away.
I also enjoy the subtlety of Jon looking over his shoulder before he says he serves the North. Probably doesn’t mean anything narratively, but this isn’t the behavior of guy falling in love.
Maybe this is cheating...but I’m including what Beric says because it’s the first time in a very long time that the viewers got to see Jon connect with another person about his “purpose” since he left for Dragonstone.
How long has Jon been waiting for someone to say something that makes sense to him? Tyrion tells him he’s not a prisoner; he’s just not free to go. Daenerys tells him not to hold her accountable for her father’s crimes but demands he be held to the vows of his great x900 grandfather and also tells him she believes him about the NK so that must mean he should be more than willing to bend the knee. Missandei tells him that she knows Daenerys would let her leave for Naath if she asked for a ship WHILE JON IS BEING HELD PRISONER AND PREVENTED FROM GOING TO HIS SHIP.
But what Beric says triggers Jon in a positive way. It confirms what we all should know: Jon doesn’t care who sits on the Throne. He just doesn’t. He’s trying to navigate this entire situation so that he can defend his home and his people.
Theon
So Daenerys saves Jon. Now people argue that this is the point that Jon fell in love with Daenerys. I’m going to again argue otherwise because of what I see...
Beric talks about someone sitting the Throne whom he barely knows and not caring about that; Jon tells Daenerys before leaving for the wight hunt that he’s asking her to trust him, a stranger. I think it’s reasonable to say that, given the total lack of any personal exposition given by Jon to Daenerys, given the total lack of positive reaction to being asked questions ABOUT Daenerys by other characters, and given the striking similarity between Jon’s stranger speech and Beric’s quote to Jon, Jon still sees Daenerys as a stranger when she comes to his rescue North of the Wall.
And this is supposed to be the moment Jon falls in love with Daenerys? Wow, if that’s the standard, I guess it’d be really hard for anyone to argue that Jon isn’t already in love with Sansa then, right? Of course that’s not the case. At the point of the wight hunt, Jon still shares no particular warm feelings regarding Daenerys. If the foundation of their love is that she saved him after he didn’t express any fondness to anyone despite weeks (months?) together on Dragonstone, I’m wholly unconvinced.
Which brings us to the scene with Theon. How anyone can see this in any way other than foreshadowing (or even a semi-reveal) of political!Jon is still beyond me. What other narrative purpose for Jon saying “it might LOOK LIKE I’m doing the right thing but I’m REALLY NOT” other than to show that there’s more to this Northern Fool than meets the eye. The same one who suddenly was placed on a pedestal for his apparent incapability to lie.
Folks, Jon is saying there’s more to him under the surface than he’s showing outright.
If this is how Jon Snow acts when he’s in love, then Kit Harrington did the worst job conveying love of any character on a TV show that I can recall seeing. Because I will agree he shows a measure of seduction with Daenerys in his conversations with her through the season. But that simply doesn’t explain his behaviors with other characters.
He acts dopey, honest, and impulsive with Daenerys. He acts laser-focused, driven, and pragmatic with the other characters.
Jon Snow is two different characters in Season 7.
The proof is right there in the show screaming at you.
Shouldn’t this be enough to convince you that political!Jon is possible if not probable???
Aye, maybe that’s enough.

Shadows of Valentia Top Ten -- #1 Lukas: The Messenger
Well, I am who I am. I imagine I should stop hoping for more.
Sometimes canon gives you a character so precisely attuned to your biases that you can't believe it's actually real.
Lukas. The name means "bringer of light" so it's fitting he's the one who sounds the Call to Arms for Alm's particular Hero's Journey. My assumption regarding Lukas headed into the remake was pretty simple-- he'd be, like, Alm's surrogate-brother guy. His death quote in OG Gaiden references Alm, he was in the Team Alm banner for FE Heroes along with Clair & Faye aka Alm's fangirl squad, so I figured he and Alm would be bros. Or, you know, "bros" with the usual wink-wink stuff.
Yeah, well, they're not bros like that. Everything about it is way more complicated, from the position Lukas holds as the younger son of a noble but not-very-illustrious house to what's going on inside of his head. On the surface, he's this incredibly pleasant and reasonable guy. Take the scene where he agrees to bring Alm & Friends back to the Deliverance and Lukas assures Tobin that it's fine to have a not-idealistic motivation like money for joining the army. What a cool guy! So open-minded and reassuring to the village kiddies! What a great Team Mom he is.
Three base conversations later, we find out Lukas himself had zero motivation to join the Deliverance or any other army and was in fact sent there by an elder half-brother who plainly didn't care whether Lukas lived or died and most likely would've been A-OK with his little brother coming home in a box. And Lukas relays this with a small smile and no emotional shading whatsoever, like he's discussing the weather. On the one hand, it comes out of left field, but on the other hand, this was set up from the moment he recruited Tobin: "It's OK not to have heroic motives for being here. I don't. :)"
This happens a great deal with Lukas, as pieces of characterization flow forward and backward across the main game script, the support conversations, and the Rise of the Deliverance DLC. That big confrontation he has with Fernand at Deliverance HQ turns out to have a massive and meaningful backstory. Any alarm bells that ring when he gives Alm advice on conducting a "good-hearted" invasion of Rigel that's bound to have casualties rise to a crescendo at the finale to Rise of the Deliverance when Lukas uses civilian hostages as a bargaining chip in dealing with Chancellor Desaix. He seems more than a little irreverent towards Valentia's gods and the “old children’s tale” of a prophesied hero even as he acts out a self-aware role in fulfilling said prophecy-- emphasis on the self-aware part as I don't think that can be overlooked. And that perpetually even-keeled niceness turns out not to be a front for something more troubling but a result of his central conflict as a character.
Lukas doesn't feel things like other people and he's not happy about it. Deep visceral emotions like rage, envy, and romantic passion are outside his experience. I'm not going to digress into the root cause of his state of being, whether he's good or bad representation of whatever it is he's representing... assuming the writers didn't get lucky when assembling him. We don't know if this is an organic disconnect or something that developed from how he was treated by his father and half-brother or a combination of both... or if someone on the writing staff wanted a character "like that" and didn't think too hard as to why and were just savvy enough not to use "magic" as a reason. But it's the through-line of his one in-game support with Clive and the big reveal of his DLC support with Python and it manifests in everything else from the glimpses he gives of his ungood family life to his final battle quote. Killing a god? That could potentially be exciting.
Setting aside the issue of whether or not it takes deicide for Lukas to get his rocks off, instead of being bros with Alm, reboot!Lukas has clearly imprinted on Clive (the only character whose death Lukas mourns post-chapter) and their dialogue at the end of Rise of the Deliverance is a wonderful scene that evoked memories of reading about historical generals dealing with the aftermath of real-life battles like Shiloh. Yet their support chain goes pear-shaped immediately as Clive praises Lukas for his cold and analytical nature aka the very thing Lukas doesn't especially like about himself. This is not your standard senior knight/junior knight mentoring here, as Clive steps in it during the C support, causing Lukas to stew and then unleash (by his standards) an outburst in the B support, and then Clive makes a transparent and clumsy attempt to make it all better in the A-support at the end of the war. Sounds like they haven't talked much about anything deep in the interim. And the way it wraps up, with Lukas saying "Why do you keep me around if not for my greatest virtue?" is probably self-deprecating humor, but who knows?
Then too there's a sense of containment in spite of his network his friends in the Deliverance (and both his Clive support and his Heroes dialogue show a clear-eyed and unsentimental take on said friends). Everyone thinks well of him but should he die, no one person takes a time-out to mourn him. His ending, though fitting and satisfying, is fixed and the loss of Clive or the others won't change it. Doesn't sound like he finds value in his background as a middle-tier noble, which he's basically repudiating by Act V anyway. Oh yeah, and even before the main game he's rejected his blood family, declaring he has no home with them anymore. One can only assume the lady he was courting (as referred to in the Python supports) never hears from him again.
Back to the prophecy. If Clive gets the Dorias role in this as the voice of flawed traditionalism and a certain strain of idealism that goes with it, Lukas takes on the role inhabited by August (and then Soren) as the pragmatist who gets shit done, the one willing to metaphorically and literally dirty his hands-- while both of them were in on the hostage plot, Clive’s the one affected by their actions. Lukas doesn’t appear to have any qualms. In another possible echo of the way August groomed Leif for his role, Lukas appears to grasp well before the Big Reveal that what they're all doing with Alm isn't giving a kid an army and turning him loose, but actually making a hero. Despite his skepticism of the whole “hero prophecy” thing, in trying to shape the narrative of the invasion of Rigel, in saying what he does and doesn't when Alm picks up the Royal Sword, possibly all the way back in Ram Village when he recruits five teenagers instead of the veteran leader he was sent to collect, there's an undercurrent of craft to what Lukas is doing. How curious that this deliberately literate character is the one speaking in terms of "taming myths" and of messaging while Clive (who also knows about the prophecy) is fretting over bloodlines and whether not he bet on the wrong colt.
I've seen some speculation that Mycen tipped off Lukas to the grand plan during the failed "recruitment" and I don't think that's entirely true because the Royal Sword scene is the rare moment where Lukas sounds shocked, but even if Mycen didn't give him the crib notes I think Lukas pieces together enough that by the invasion of Rigel he is trying to make sure hero suitable to the prophecy shows up at Rigel Castle. Why else establish that he and Clive are actively thinking about the identity of the hero? For lulz and irony, maybe. Maybe, but there’s all the other stuff above to take into account..
So, Lukas. Coldly competent, sweetly fucked-up, calculating as hell, genuinely nice, turning a dry and unsparing eye and a polite smile upon the world. He uses my favorite FE weapon class and he really just wants to lose himself in a book. And hanging above him is that undefined and seemingly unattainable "more" that we never can know for sure if he actually finds, or at least finds peace in the lack thereof. And we never do find out what his "ambition" was referred to in his retreat quote even was before he apparently (?) let it go. Don’t pity him, though-- he’s not asking for pity, and he’s not allowing himself regret.

21) Kissed someone on your Facebook list: I don’t have Facebook, and again, I’ve never been kissed (ah, I remember that movie)
General
22) How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life: See 21.
23) Do you have any pets: I have a dog
24) Do you want to change your name: I’m starting to grow attached to my first name, but I still wanna change my last and middle names.

26) What time did you wake up: Around 8-9.
27) What were you doing at midnight last night: I think I was asleep?
28) Name something you can’t wait for: BTS comeback! It’s going to be amazing!
29) When was the last time you saw your mother: Can I just register the fact that this question is a little weird? My answer is 2-3 months ago, I honestly can’t remember.
30) What is one thing you wish you could change about your life: This is deep. One of two things. I wish I could either change how emotionally sensitive I am or the fact that my family is so disjointed.
31) What are you listening to right now: You Were Beautiful by Day6.
32) Have you ever talked to a person named Tom: Weirdly specific question. Yes, I have a step-grandfather named Tom.

34) Most visited website: YouTube
35) Elementary school: 5 different ones.
36) High school: Only one.

41) What do you like about yourself: How quickly I learn and how sympathetic and emotionally creative I am.
42) Piercings: I used to have the standard ear piercings, but I let the holes close in.
43) Blood type: I used to be tested a heap, but I don’t have contact with anyone who knows. I’m actually curious.
44) Nickname: Tash, Trash.
45) Relationship status: Single and not really willing to mingle yet.
46) Zodiac sign: Pisces
47) Favourite TV show: I don’t really know…how about…American Hustle Life (BTS TV series)! That was on TV! It’s a series! It counts, right?
48) Tattoos: I don’t have any, but once I’m legally able to get one, I want a pretty reference to a book/movie/anything really. It would probably be one of those deep and meaningful quotes, it would be somewhere I can hide easily but won’t look weird if I show off.
49) Right handed or left handed: Right handed, though I don’t feel uncomfortable doing some things left handed.
First
50) Surgery: I don’t know if I had one earlier, but I had to have tongue surgery because the join between my tongue and the bottom of my mouth was REALLY far forward.
51) Piercing: My ears, I think I was 9-10.
52) Best friend: Jacob, I haven’t seen him since I moved house just before I was 8, I honestly could barely even remember his name, makes me feel kinda sad.
53) Sport: Swimming, I think I started that before horse riding.
54) Vacation: Cairns, QLD, Aus. I was 8 years old.
55) Pair of trainers: Wait, who ACTUALLY remembers that stuff!
Right now
56) Eating: Haven’t eaten for AGES

60) Waiting for: As above, BTS COMEBACK ITS GOING TO BE AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL. Also for the next Every Day6 release, Hi Hello is beautiful and makes me feel emotions.
61) Want: My friends, food, sleep, no homework, BTS comeback, all BTS merchandise and music, to meet BTS.
62) Get married: Umm? Not at the moment, and I’m uncertain about making that commitment at all.
63) Career: Frankly, I have no clue.
Which is better
64) Hugs or kisses: Hugs, because I have experience and a good hug is the BEST feeling.
65) Lips or eyes: Eyes, they tell you so much about a person and they’re really pretty to look at.
66) Shorter or taller: Depends on what for. For friendship I’ll say shorter because I’m used to that. For a romantic relationship I’ll say taller, but not by much, probably because of relationship stereotypes. I think I’m slightly traditional in terms of romantic attachments.
67) Older or younger: I don’t care about age specifically, but I internally believe in the stereotype that older people are more mature so might go for someone older for relationship on that basis. I focus on personality more that age.
68) Romantic or spontaneous: I really don’t know, I want a connection with my partner so I don’t really care about romantic gestures.
69) Nice arms or nice stomach: Honestly, I couldn’t care less. I care about how I get along with my partner. Can I answer nice personality?
70) Sensitive or loud: I want someone who is both. I suppose more sensitive as I want someone who really pays attention to me and cares about how I feel. I want someone who can be loud though as I want to be able to have fun with my partner.
71) Hook up or relationship: Relationship, no doubt. I care about emotional connections.
72) Troublemaker or hesitant: I want someone who can do both. I suppose troublemaker as that person would be more confident than the hesitant one?
Have you ever
73) Kissed a stranger: As above, I have no experience.
74) Drank hard liquor: Nope.
75) Lost glasses/contact lenses: Real talk, I am the WORST when it comes to losing glasses. At one time I had THREE pairs of glasses lost AT THE SAME TIME.
76) Turned someone down: Um, no one’s ever propositioned me…so…
77) Sex on first date: No, I despise the thought.
78) Broken someone’s heart: Does my own count?
79) Had your own heart broken: Platonically, yes, almost constantly because of a few bad friendships I’ve been in. Romantically, see above.
80) Been arrested: No.
81) Cried when someone died: When that someone was a fictional character, yes. I am TERRIBLE at not crying, I just feel all the emotions and can’t help myself. When that someone is a real person, yes. Nowhere near as much as a fictional character, but still a lot. I taught drama to young primary school children and one of them was involved in an accident. This was around November last year and I still wanna punch anyone who brings the topic up.
82) Fallen for a friend: I draw a strict line between people I allow myself to feel that way for. Anyone in a position of authority or I am close to platonically are definitely in the DO NOT FALL FOR zone
Do you believe in
83) Yourself: Not really.
84) Miracles: No
85) Love at first sight: That, my dear, is called hormones and is an ATTRACTION. I believe that ‘love at first sight’ will not last unless built up and strengthened over time.
86) Santa Claus: Nope, the only reason I pretend to around my family is so that I get the benefit of presents.
87) Kiss on the first date: Depends on how long you’ve known each other, how close you are and the dynamic at that moment. I would definitely say no to anything too extensive,
88) Angels: Not beyond the comparison to really kind people.
Other
89) Current best friend’s name: I refuse to choose between Tara and Payton, so there you go, you get both (see Tara, one of us is fair).
90) Eye colour: Blue
91) Favourite movie: I really have no clue…
Ok, that’s it. I don’t really have anyone to tag so just feel free to do it. Sorry for the delay in posting.

Responses to {Part 29} I Won’t Stop You // Jeon Jungkook, Vampire!AU Asks~
Please ‘Keep Reading’ to find my response to your ask ^^ As always, I have copied and pasted all asks into this post in regards to last night’s chapter to avoid clogging up people’s dashboards and to avoid spoilers for those who may still wish to read the chapter. Thank you ^^
(I have also included asks that I received before this IWSY chapter was posted ^^)
@jungshaking said: I was so hyped during work yesterday. I thought "oh yes a new chapter tonight" MULTIPLE times, but I had to remind myself each time that it was Monday 😩😭 (cont.) tbh I'm so scared that the upcoming IWSY chapter will be the last now that Yoongi is gone

@clara-licht said: So in the end, I didn't get the univ invitation and I also didn't get the Wings Tour ticket even after waiting in the venue for hours, so I felt really shitty even until now. (I still can't listen to 2!3! or I'll break down in tears) But still, I look forward to Wednesdays because IWSY can always get my mind off these problems even if only for a while. How many more chapters do you reckon it will be? I, for one, don't want it to end but all good things will come to an end after all :')
Awh babe I’m so so sorry to hear that :/ that really sucks but don’t worry, BTS will definitely be coming back to where you live in the future and you can have another chance to see them okay? Same with the University, are you able to apply for another one? Did you get any more offers? I’m glad that IWSY can make you a little happy ^^ And I’ not 100% sure, but I suspect that next week might be the last chapter, I haven’t fully decided yet! But the final chapter will have ‘Final Chapter’ written in the title :D
@nora2bts said: Hiii! I'm sorry I don't want to be annoying or anything but I binge read "IWSU" and I reallyyyyyyy loved it a lot! You’re not annoying love! I do write at the top of every chapter that IWSY is posted every Tuesday evening between 9-10pm UK time and I have always stayed true to that so fear not! Thank you so much for enjoying the story my love, you’re so welcome ^^
@clara-licht said: I was listening to Spring Day when I read chapter 29 and for the first time since WT in Jakarta I can listen to the song and sing it happily instead of feeling hurt and upset, because I was so excited throughout the chapter! So thank you for that :) I can't stop smiling, gosh! I really, REALLY want to know how Jiminnie is faring. And I think I fell for Namjoon. That sweet, sweet boy 😍 Oh btw, how old are they all by now? Including Namjoon, Yoongi (had he been alive), Jin, and Hobi?
AwwwwHHHH YES! I’m glad it holds no bad memories for you now my love ^^ Thank you for reading the chapter dear :D And as for their ages, I did specify Yoongi’s was older than Taehyung in a precious chapter (I just can’t remember which chapter, sorry!) and Namjoon is University/college age so somewhere between 18-25 (I decided not to give a specific age). Unfortunately, I never specified Hoseok and Seokjin’s ages in the story but they would have been University age too :D

Anonymous said: Babe, the 29th part of IWSY was absolutely amazing ;-; but i feel that the end is nearing.. I loved IWSY so much it brought me to tears and it hurts to think that so beautiful a thing would actually be coming to an end.. Your writing skills are on fleek and the story is well woven.. Thank you so much for such an incredible experience ~ ❤😭😘
The end is definitely nearing, sadly enough :c IWSY has become a real world to me for the past almost 30 weeks of my life! lol :3 I suspect that next week will be the final chapter, but I don’t know for 100% so don’t quote me on that ;D Your words about me are beautiful and I don’t deserve them, but thank you so much my love ^^

Hahaha don’t worry it was just a little accident! Even if Jungkook were to never marry Y/N, I’m sure their relationship would still be a solid, loving and caring one ^^ for all three of them! :D thank you so much holoAnon! :D
Anonymous said: I'm so happy that Joonie is finally at peace with the notion of being a vampire, and the way Y/N told Tae about how Yoongi was happy in his own little world with Tae and their parents was so incredibly heartwarming and what made it even better was what that meant to Tae, and I just ugh. This chapter made me soft. Like Yoongi's gummy smile soft. Thank you for always writing such amazing stories.
Yes - I was excited to reveal why Namjoon was the way he was, so that everyone could understand him better. I felt that this chapter was the best time to do that as the other chapters before the ball kind of painted him in a negative light. But he always had a heart full of gold c: YOONGI’S GUMMY SMILE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER HE SHOULD ALWAYS SMILE LIKE THAT :D hehe~ aww thank you so much and you’re welcome for the story dear ^^
@kookietaejimin said: hi!!! do you know how long iwsy is going to be?

Warming and torturing is something I love doing :D hehe~ IWSY is almost over, yes :( But fear not! I plan on doing a spin off for Tae and Jimin in the future (maybe like 2-3 chapters) on how their relationship formed way before Y/N met Jungkook :D For those of you who love Vampire VMIN! ^^ Thank you for loving the layout and the plot - you warmed my heart in return :D I love you too and thank you so much my dear!! ;3

@koreaisanaddiction said: great chapter. one of my theories were correct. the one about namjoon. but the one about the baby was wrong. i realized i thought about it in the eyes of human logic not vampiric. oh well better luck next time for me i guess.
Thank you for thinking it was great! And yay! one out of two isn’t bad at all heh ^^ Don’t worry dear, I’m still really happy you enjoyed it :)
Anonymous said: Is it bad that I'm actually really completely genuinely satisfied with the ending of chapter 29 of ISWY? and that it would be completely fine if you just stopped the series right there? I dunno, but the way you wrote this chapter, it doesn't make me feel the need to question anything. Sara, you ended it perfectly and now, you're turning me from a loyal maknae-line stan to a namjoon stan. That.... not many people can do. *applauds* Anyways, I love you, take care, and keep writing! <3 - army anon
Awwwww that’s so freaking sweet I CAN’T guh ~~~ I’m legit crying at your message right now, seriously :( haha OKAY I’m good~ lol Well it looks like right now there will be one more chapter to go, but I’m not completely sure or decided yet. There’s still one or two things I’d like to include to wrap things up once and for all :3 AND OMG NAMJOON SNATCHED YOU?! Uh oh..makenae line is gonna have to step up their game if they want you back :3 I love you too and thank you so much for being so kind to me always, you have no idea how happy and cheerful it makes me :)

Anonymous said: is it just me or is part 29 shorter ??? oh my gosh I can't get enough of it T.T I honestly think after the end of the series you should gather all the chapters and make it into a story book. it's way too good!! -bunnykookie96
Hiya love! Hmmm well it’s the same length as any other chapter really :3 Possibly because it’s just drawing to an end that one might feel like it’s shorter :( I actually would really love to do that but I have no idea how lol :c Anyway, thank you so much for reading the new chapter my deary!! :3

22 of the Best Motivational Speeches of All Time
It was halftime during one of my 7th grade football games. And we were losing 14 - 0. With our knees planted in the grass, my team was quietly huddled, drenched in sweat and defeat. We all knew the game was over.
That's when our assistant coach bursted through our circle and shattered our pity party, delivering one of the best motivational speeches I've heard to this day.
I can't directly quote him because he said some things that are inappropriate for a blog post (and, in hindsight, probably for a bunch of 13-year-olds too). But the point is, he harnessed the power of words to rejuvenate a physically and emotionally drained team. And we came back clawing to win the game.
Just like in sports, being motivated at work is crucial for your performance. This rings especially true when you have a looming deadline, an important presentation to give, or colleagues or customers depending on your performance.
To help you stay motivated, no matter what your job throws at you, we decided to compile 22 of the best motivational speeches from business, sports, entertainment, and more. If you want to get fired up for a project, watch these videos. Trust me, I was ready to write a 5,000 word blog post after I saw them. And while the messages vary from speech to speech, they will put you in the optimal frame of mind for tackling and crushing your next big challenge.
(Disclaimer: Some speeches -- *cough* Al Pacino *cough* -- may contain NSFW language.)
22 of the Best Motivational Speeches
1) J.K. Rowling: The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination (2008)
youtube
In J.K. Rowling's 2008 Harvard commencement speech, the Harry Potter author explored how two phenomena -- failure and imagination -- can be crucial to success. While failure can help you understand where your true passion lies, and where you should focus your energy moving forward, imagination is what will allow you to empathize with other people so you can use your influence to do good.
We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better."
2) David Foster Wallace: "This Is Water" (2005)
youtube
From the opening minutes of David Foster Wallace's 2005 Kenyon College commencement speech, in which he questions commencement speech conventions, it's clear that Wallace has some serious wisdom to share. The crux of his speech: Many of us are oblivious to our own close-mindedness. We picture ourselves as the centers of our own, individual universes, instead of seeing the bigger, more interconnected picture.
If you're automatically sure that you know what reality is and who and what is really important, if you want to operate on your default setting, then you, like me, probably won't consider possibilities that aren't annoying and miserable. But if you've really learned how to think, how to pay attention, then you'll know you have other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer hell-type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred -- on fire with the same force that lit the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down."
3) Bren Brown: "The Power of Vulnerability" (2013)
youtube
The video above is an animated excerpt from researcher Bren Brown's speech, "The Power of Vulnerability." In the speech, Brown explores how our fear of not being good enough (among other fears) drives us to shield ourselves from our own vulnerabilities. The alternative to wearing this emotional suit of armor: Embrace vulnerability through empathizing with others.
Empathy is a choice, and it's a vulnerable choice. Because in order to connect with you, I have to connect with something in myself that knows that feeling. "
4) Al Pacino: "Inch by Inch" (1999)
youtube
Yes, this speech is from a football movie (Any Given Sunday), but trust me: This isn't your stereotypical rah-rah-go-get-'em sports speech. It's deeper than that. It's about life, and loss, and ... gosh darn it just listen to Al Pacino, he's pouring his soul out!
Either we heal as a team or we're gonna crumble, inch by inch, play by play, till we're finished. We're in hell right now, gentlemen, believe me. And we can stay here and get the $@ kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of hell, one inch at a time."
5) Steve Jobs: "How to Live Before You Die" (2005)
youtube
Considering the YouTube video of Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford commencement speech has 24 million views (not counting the 10 million+ additional views from duplicate uploads), it's likely that you've seen this one already. In the speech, Jobs plays on two themes: connecting the dots (anecdote: how taking a calligraphy class helped inspire the design of the Mac) and love & loss (anecdote: how getting fired from Apple helped inspire his greatest innovations). Perhaps the most memorable part his speech comes at the end, when he quotes the (now-famous) lines from the final issue of his favorite publication, The Whole Earth Catalog:
Stay hungry. Stay foolish."
6) Ellen DeGeneres: Tulane University Commencement Speech (2009)
youtube
Ellen's speech, as you might expect, has its humorous moments. But it also explores some of the very personal and tragic episodes in her life that helped push her into comedy in the first place. Two key themes of DeGeneres'speech: overcoming adversity and being true to yourself. ForDeGeneres, that meant pushing onward with her career after her sitcom was canceled in response to her publicly coming out as gay.
Really, when I look back on it, I wouldn't change a thing. I mean, it was so important for me to lose everything because I found out what the most important thing is ... to be true to yourself. Ultimately, that's what's gotten me to this place. I don't live in fear. I'm free. I have no secrets and I know I'll always be OK, because no matter what, I know who I am."
7) Will Smith: Speech from The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
youtube
Here's another speech from the big screen, this time from the 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness. In the scene above, Will Smith's character explains to his son why he shouldn't pursue basketball (because he'll end up being "below average") before having a major change of heart.
Don't ever let somebody tell you ... you can't do something. Not even me. All right? You got a dream. You gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they want to tell you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period."
8) Sheryl Sandberg: Harvard Business School Class Day Speech (2012)
youtube
In her speech to the HBS class of 2012, Lean In author and tech executive Sheryl Sandberg deconstructed the idea of the "career as a ladder." For Sandberg, a career is about finding opportunities where you can make an impact, not about chasing titles and planning out a meticulous path. "If I had mapped out my career when I was sitting where you are, I would have missed my career," she commented. What's more, Sandberg eschews the traditional wisdom of keeping emotions out of the workplace. For Sandberg, you need to care not only about what you're working on, but also who you're working with.
"If you want to win hearts and minds, you have to lead with your heart as well as your mind. I don't believe we have a professional self from Mondays through Fridays and a real self for the rest of the time ... It is all professional and it is all personal, all at the very same time."
9) Dan Pink: "The Puzzle of Motivation" (2009)
youtube
Commissions, bonuses, other incentives ... in the business world, these are the things that motivate people, right? According to Dan Pink in his 2009 TED Talk, such extrinsic motivators (a.k.a. "carrots and sticks") could actually be doing more harm than good. The most recent sociological research suggests that the real key to producing better work is to find intrinsic motivation inside of yourself.
There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. And what worries me, as we stand here in the rubble of the economic collapse, is that too many organizations are making their decisions, their policies about talent and people, based on assumptions that are outdated, unexamined, and rooted more in folklore than in science."
10) Denzel Washington: "Fall Forward" (2011)
youtube
In his 2011 UPenn commencement speech, Denzel Washington highlighted three reasons why we need to embrace failure in order to be successful. First, everybody will fail at something at some point, so you better get used to it. Second, if you never fail, take that as a sign that you're not really trying. And third, at the end of the day, failure will help you figure out what path you want to be on.
Fall forward. Here's what I mean: Reggie Jackson struck out twenty-six-hundred times in his career -- the most in the history of baseball. But you don't hear about the strikeouts. People remember the home runs. Fall forward. Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed experiments. Did you know that? I didn't know that-because #1,001 was the light bulb. Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success."
11) Sylvester Stallone: Speech from Rocky Balboa (2006)
youtube
I had to put this one next since it plays along the same themes as Denzel Washington's UPenn speech. In the scene above, from the 2006 film Rocky Balboa, the title character (played by Sylvester Stallone) is having a heart-to-heart with his son. The advice he gives him: Don't let your failures or the adversity you face slow you down. Keep. Moving. Forward.
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"
12) Elizabeth Gilbert: "Your Elusive Creative Genius" (2009)
youtube
Following the extraordinary success of her book, Eat, Pray, Love, people began asking author Elizabeth Gilbert the same question over and over and over: How are you going to top that? In her 2009 TED Talk, Gilbert explores that question while also examining how our ideas of genius and creativity have shifted over the generations. While once seen as separate entities or states of being that anyone could tap into, genius and creativity have increasingly become associated with individuals. And according to Gilbert, that shift has been putting more and more pressure on artists, writers, and other creatives to produce great work.
I think that allowing somebody, one mere person to believe that he or she is like, the vessel, you know, like the font and the essence and the source of all divine, creative, unknowable, eternal mystery is just a smidge too much responsibility to put on one fragile, human psyche. It's like asking somebody to swallow the sun. It just completely warps and distorts egos, and it creates all these unmanageable expectations about performance. And I think the pressure of that has been killing off our artists for the last 500 years."
13) Charlie Day: Merrimack College Commencement Speech (2014)
youtube
Best known for his role in the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, actor Charlie Day had lots of wisdom to share during the 2014 commencement speech at his alma mater, Merrimack College. Day explained to the audience how college degrees are inherently valueless, since you can't trade them in for cash. Instead, it's you, your hard work, and the risks you take that provide real value in life.
You cannot let a fear of failure or a fear of comparison or a fear of judgment stop you from doing the things that will make you great. You cannot succeed without the risk of failure. You cannot have a voice without the risk of criticism. You cannot love without the risk of loss. You must take these risks."
14) Frank Oz/Yoda: Speech from The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
youtube
This speech fromThe Empire Strikes Back felt like a natural follow-up to Charlie Day's speech. In the scene above, Yoda -- voiced by Frank Oz -- is teaching Luke the ways of the force. One of his key teachings: Whether or not something can or can't be done (e.g., lifting an X-Wing out of a swamp) is all in your head. So instead of doubting yourself, believe in yourself.
"Do, or do not. There is no try."
15) William Wallace: Speech From the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297)
youtube
OK, I'll admit it: I couldn't find a recording of the actual speech Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace gave at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 (the historian I spoke with said something about "nonexistent technology" and me "being an idiot," but I digress). Historical accuracy aside, there's no denying that Mel Gibson's version of the speech from the 1995 film Braveheart can help get you pumped up.
"Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!"
16) Orlando Scampington: "The Pillars of C.L.A.M." (2015)
youtube
Sometimes humor is the best motivator. So here's an INBOUND Bold Talk from self-proclaimed author, thought leader, dreamer, cat owner, visionary, and "believer in unlimited human potential," Orlando Scampington. As you'll soon realize upon reading the quote below, it's hard to explain what his speech is actually about -- so I think it's better that you just dive in and enjoy.
"Culture is the bitter drunken coachmen lashing motivation into the ungrateful workhorses, so they drag the wagon of growth down the road of success. I think that's a very accurate analogy."
17) Kurt Russell: This is Your Time (2004)
youtube
The Miracle on Ice is still considered the biggest upset in Olympic hockey history. And for good reason. The Soviet Union won six of the last seven Olympic gold medals, and the U.S. team consisted only of amateur players. It was obvious the Soviets were better. But, in the movie Miracle, which told the incredible story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, Kurt Russell's character -- Coach Herb Brooks -- knew that this game was different. The U.S. was better than the Soviets that day. And his speech conveyed such a strong belief in his team that they pulled off one of the greatest sports moments of the 20th century.
"If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players, every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time.
18) Jim Valvano: ESPY Speech (1993)
youtube
Less than two months before he lost his battle to cancer, Jim Valvano delivered one of the most impactful and timeless speeches about living life to the fullest. My words can't do it justice, so be prepared for some laughter, tears, and thought.
I just got one last thing; I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have. To spend each day with some laughter and some thought, to get your emotions going. To be enthusiastic every day, and Ralph Waldo Emerson said, Nothing great could be accomplished without enthusiasm, to keep your dreams alive in spite of problems whatever you have. The ability to be able to work hard for your dreams to come true, to become a reality.
19) Mel Gibson: The Valley of the Shadow of Death (2002)
youtube
The movie We Were Soldiers takes place in one of the most racially charged decades in American history, but Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore -- played by Mel Gibson -- delivered such a rousing speech that it brought an incredibly diverse group of soldiers together as one unit. He knew if his troops could set their differences aside, then they would form a true brotherhood, increasing their chances of survival as a whole. That way, the memories of their lost brothers could live on forever when they returned home.
I can't promise that I will bring you all home alive. But this I swear before you and before Almighty God: that when we go into battle, I will be the first to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off. And I will leave no one behind. Dead or alive, we will all come home together. So help me God.
20) Kal Penn: DePauw University Commencement Speech (2014)
youtube
In 2014, Kal Penn delivered an uplifting speech that DePauw University will never forget. He advised graduates to strive for success but to not let it loosen their grip on the things that actually matter, like staying connected with loved ones, being adventurous, and acting selflessly. He also comforted millennials everywhere, convincing them that their futures are full of potential and promise because their generation's identity is rooted in innovation.
Opportunity is all around us. You're graduating at a time where youth unemployment is high. And yet your peers are refusing to sit idly by. You're the most active, service-driven generation, the most imaginative, the most tech-savvy. You're creating opportunities, inventing gadgets, placing an emphasis on social responsibility over greed. So stop worrying so much. Why are you worried?
21) Charles Dutton: Speech from Rudy (1993)
youtube
In the film Rudy, Sean Astin's character, Rudy Ruettiger, quits the Notre Dame football team because he has to watch one of his last games from the stands. After two years of grueling practices and never once being apart of the team on the sidelines, he's done dealing with the humiliation. But his friend Fortune -- played by Charles Dutton -- flips the script on him. He shows Rudy that he shouldn't be humiliated. He should be proud because he's proven to everyone that his perseverance and heart can carry him through any challenge. He just needs to realize that himself. And the only way he can do that is if he stays on the team for the rest of the season.
You're 5 feet nothin', a 100 and nothin', and you got hardly a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in with the best college football team in the land for two years. And you're also gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this lifetime, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody except yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back.
22) Vera Jones: But the Blind Can Lead the Blind (2016)
youtube
Last year at INBOUND, Vera Jones told a moving story about the life lessons she's learned from raising her blind son. She explains how having faith in your future and letting it lead you toward your true purpose will help you overcome blinding obstacles. She also discusses how following your passion and trusting your vision develops empathy, which is a critical leadership skill.
Passionately play your position no matter how bad things get. You are significant. Why we are here is not for our own glory. Ultimately, we're here to lead and serve everybody else. By doing that, we encourage others to do the same.

Keep. Moving. Forward.

12) Elizabeth Gilbert: "Your Elusive Creative Genius" (2009)

Following the extraordinary success of her book, Eat, Pray, Love, people began asking author Elizabeth Gilbert the same question over and over and over: How are you going to top that? In her 2009 TED Talk, Gilbert explores that question while also examining how our ideas of genius and creativity have shifted over the generations.
