i forgot how fucking incredible this movie is in 3d.

look, i hate 3d and i’m so glad it’s failed as hard as it has. most of the time even when a movie looks great in 3d it just doesn’t add that much to the experience for me to be worth all the headache–sometimes literally. plus the glasses hurt the bridge of my nose. plus now with masks you have to deal with trying to get them not to fog up.

i’m not trying to go all Old Enby Yells At Cloud here, especially over a fad that peaked 10 years ago, but i just think that 3d is for theme park attractions and the very occasional movie that really, truly calls for it. and those movies should also look fucking great in 2d, btw! avatar is the best 3d movie of all time, but when you’re watching it in 2d there are absolutely zero scenes where you snicker & say “oh, i wonder if this was originally in 3d?” so other movies really have no excuse.

like think of the amazing spider-man movies. even if they looked good in 3d (i have no idea) the first one looks like ass in 2d, and there are a bunch of scenes in both where you kinda roll your eyes because it’s basically the big budget tentpole equivalent of in friday the 13th part iii when they stop the movie to juggle or play with yo-yos. it just dates the movie and makes it harder to enjoy in every format.

so basically you need a filmmaker as obsessive as james cameron who has the clout to bully studios into letting him spend as much money & take as long as he fucking wants to put something like this together for it to be worth a damn. and like, if that’s what it’s gonna be, fine? i’ll happily see those movies in 3d? i just don’t want to return to the years of every single studio movie coming out in 3d because the vast majority of them end up looking fucking terrible in 2d & not really being that good in 3d? and as a 3d hater, i just don’t want to see a 3d movie but every once in a while. i’m sorry.

anyway, like i said, this movie looks fantastic no matter what format you watch it in. but given that i most recently saw it on a laptop screen & (i swear to the gods) on one of those tiny screens on the back of an airplane headrest because i thought it would be hilarious to watch it on the way home from disney after going to avatarland for the first time, i was pretty blown away by how big (heh) of a difference seeing it on the big screen again made. even just the early parade of establishing shots & voiceover narration have so much more power to draw you into the world, and it makes all the amazing alien sights on pandora all that much more powerful because you’re already sucked into the movie’s world. it’s small wonder that so many people found the movie so intensely affecting when they saw it in theaters, but given that not many people are sitting down to watch a nearly 3-hour epic on a regular basis this weird narrative formed about the movie being “forgettable” or whatever the fuck. boy am i ever sick of that one.

i kind of want to go see it again. this is exactly what happened the first time it was in theaters.

i’ve written about my issues with the movie (mostly the totally-avoidable white savior narrative) as well as the things i like about it at length before, and i don’t have anything to add to that now. but as often happens with movies where i let myself be swayed by the popular narrative around them, i find myself looping back to my original opinion when i first saw it: this movie fucking owns. s-rank

1. Who would you rather take to a night club, Carla or Azusa? 

I’ve never been to a club nor am a party person in general but I think that Carla would be a freakin epic person to go to clubbing with. Let’s just say Carla can get drunk off of human alcohol––I wanna see him bust a MOVE!

2. In a Science test would you copy Yuma’s test or Ayato’s test?

Definitely Yuma’s. The guy literally takes care of plants, he probably knows a thing or two about biology or chemistry at least. (assuming I do attempt to cheat cuz man,,, attempting that stuff makes me NERVOUS)

3. Would you rather have Kino and Azusa or Shin and Laito, as your Butlers? 

,,,,,,do I even need to say which option I’d choose? Yeah uhhh definitely Shin and Laito. Listening to that VS III cd of the both of them was so entertaining, they’re definitely a fun, yet unexpected pair. And uh Laito in a more “””submissive””” position??????????? ,,,,,,boy oh boy do I love the masochistic streak that man has,,,,, 

4. Go on a date with Reiji at an Aquarium or go on a date with Subaru at a Cafe instead?

,,,,,,,Bro I can’t stand Reiji but I LOVE aquariums (also Tsuki why are you afraid of aquariums omg ;;;;). But I also love Cafes and going to one with Subaru would be really nice.... But,,,, I can’t abandon an opportunity to go to an aquarium so I’d chose the former option. I’d probably try to challenge Reiji about his knowledge of marine animals. I bet I can outsmart him with my oddly extensive knowledge of horseshoe crabs, hehe (｀･ω･´) (horseshoe crabs are my favorite animal haha)

5. Would you rather go support/see Kou at one of his Concerts or go support/see Shu at one of his Violin Performances? 

Oh GOD this is a toughie!!! I love Kou so much and I think his concerts would be really fun, but Shu is also a very talented bby,,,, I love them both,,,,, But I’d probably have to go with Kou for this one. I’m not usually down with the rave atmosphere but seeing Kou would be SO fun.

6. In a Math Project would you team up with Ruki and Shin or with Reiji and Yuma? Who would fight less with each other? 

I was like “Reiji is def good at math so I’ll choose the latter” then I was like oh god he’s teamed up with Yuma, that’s no good,,,, However, I know Yuma can protect himself so I’m less worried about that, and Reiji could catch these hands after class if he makes any passive aggressive comments at Yuma. I’m a very school-oriented person so I’d probably go with Ruki/Shin on this one, for the grade and the decreased drama.

7. Who would you put your bets on, Kanato eating the most chocolates or Ayato eating the most Takoyaki? 

I think I’ve read somewhere that Kanato got a stomach ache from eating too many sweets??? I think??? So I’d probably bet on Ayato. That guy loves that stuff like no other.

8.- Sleep in Carla’s room, Subaru’s room or in Shu’s room? (You have the room to yourself, they aren’t there) Would you peak on their stuff? 

Considering Shu likes sleep,,,, his bed is probably at maximum comfort. I know he sleeps pretty much everywhere and anywhere, but still. I mean Subaru sleeps in a coffin, and that’s pretty metal,,,,, Also Carla’s room just looks nice too. But I love the layout of Shu’s so I’ll just stick with Shu haha.

Edit: omg I forgot to answer the latter part of the question.... hmmmm it is tempting.... I don’t think Shuu would kill me??? He’d probably mess with me tho—which,,, is better than death ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

9. You’re a princess of the Victorian era! Your father has ordered that you have a bodyguard.. who would you choose as your personal bodyguard, Laito or Kou? 

Kou is probably the more logical answer cuz he can actually throw hands when he needs/wants to, but I’m not logical when it comes to anything relating to Laito so,,,,, Laito,,,,,,, heh

10. Would you prefer to have Kino in his bat form as your pet or Shin in his wolf form as your pet instead? 

Omg first of all I didn’t know Kino had a bat form and that’s wicked cute. I don’t know too much about Kino lmao; I’d go with Kino and his bat form if I did know more about Kino. I love bats, I find them so cute, but I’m also a dog person, and Shin’s wolf form is heavily memed on. So Shin for the meme and also to have a freAKING PINK WOLF????? FUCK YEAH

11. Break a fight between Kou and Ayato or between Laito and Kanato? 

Oh god these are both a terrifying pair,,,, but Laito and Kanato are more terrifying when they're angry compared to Kou and Ayato. So I’d probably break up a fight between Laito and Kanato and then I don’t mind if I get the brunt of it by Laito later oops.

12.- Who would you kiss on the cheek, who would you kiss on the forehead and who would you kiss on the eyelids? Options: Ruki, Subaru, Azusa.

Lol I get to torment Reiji when he’s small???? fuck yeah, but also Subaru and Kino in their chibi form would be rly cute too. Honestly probably Subaru and Kino cuz it would be more entertaining. 

14. Sing/Perform in public Laito’s Q.E.D Song or Reiji’s Mr.ButterflyMask song? 

I can sing both (I’m not a good singer tho lol) but Laito’s song is more in my range I think??? Although I could sing Mr. Butterfly Mask too,,,, but y'all know me, I’m a freakin Laihoe so,,,,, y’all know what choice I’d go for

15. Would you rather wear Ruki’s casual outfit or Yuma’s casual outfit?

Yuma’s! It seems so comfy!!! And I love oversized things hehe

16. Go on a Vacation trip with Shu, Kino and Ayato at an Amusement park or go with Shin, Azusa and Subaru at a Water Amusement Park? 

I’m not a huge fan of either, they’re too overwhelming for me but if I did have to choose it’ll probably be the former. Just cuz that group seems more entertaining to be with at an amusement park. 

17. Would you rather get lost in a forest with Reiji, Kino and Kou or with Ruki, Carla and Kanato?

I never wanna be lost anywhere with Kanato; that’s a recipe for disaster. I’ll do the former! 

18.- Who would you cook breakfast for? Who would you make a scarf for? and Who would you do a drawing for? Options: Kou, Azusa, Shu.

Scarf for Azusa, cuz him swaddled up in a scarf is hella cute Drawing for Kou; I’d probably draw him whatever he asked lol, he is an artist (sure, different kind) so he probably has some fun ideas. And I’d cook breakfast for Shu cuz lazy morning breakfasts are just really nice. Tasty food and lounging around ;) 

19. Participate in a Circus as Carla’s Knife thrower assistant or go to a Casino with Shin and be offered as a bet/reward by him in the Roulette Wheel game? (So if Shin looses you’ll be taken away by whomever won) 

LOLLLL I do not trust casinos so it’ll probably have to be Carla’s knife throwing assistant. 

20. Who would you rather catch by accident taking a shower, Yuma or Kanato? 

*COUGH* ,,,,,Yuma,,,, just cuz that seems more entertaining (god look at me, pulling a Laito; choosing whichever option I deem as less boring). Kanato would probably slice me in half immediately. And,,, I have a stronger liking to Yuma lately thanks to Kai,,,,, *cough*

Aly then told me that “hey remember that I told you that the little boy in Iron Man 3 comes back at one point? Yeah that’s at the funeral” 

STUPIDLY, I then watched the death scene on YouTube, went to bed crying, and of course, dreaming about it. I will never be okay again and I will never be ready for Endgame thank you and goodbye.

I was on a call with Aly as this happened and so I told her that I had given myself a spoiler again and that it was about Loki, and she was all like I can’t remember anything that happens to Loki hmm, and so I thought YAY it’s okay, they just meant one of the times when he fake died!!! so I went on to keep reading, but before I could read anything else Aly stopped me, remembering. She told me it would be gut-wrenching and terrible and I’m just-

it was an enjoyable movie, but like,,, a little meh? 

I feel kinda the same as I did with GOTG

but I like each of them better than the other for different reasons? idk???

the plot wasn’t very thick, like I could have gone away to pee without pausing and probably not miss too much

I didn’t really get invested in the story or the characters

but it was enjoyable for sure

It was the shortest movie but it felt SO LONG because I was so bored through all of it

it just never got me hooked, I didn’t get invested in the story at all. 

there weren’t even any characters that I liked enough to want to see more

sure another infinity stone and getting to know doctor strange and shit, I get why you kinda need to watch it

but I doubt I’ll watch it again

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

the music really carried this movie tho

I love Nebula so much, such a great character

Yondu dying was really great, it did a lot for his character

I feel like it was barely contributing to the infinity saga, the only thing that’s somewhat connected is that Nebula wants to kill Thanos, and the only reason I know that’s connected is because of spoilers

because I’m not really supposed to know the significance of Thanos at this point

but then again, maybe I’ll feel differently when I’ve finished all the movies

like in the beginning it was kinda okay. I didn’t understand her powers, but at least they felt reasonable

then we got to the end and all of a sudden she’s flying and glowing and strong enough to stop and redirect a fuckin missile, and then she’s FLYING INTO BOMBS AND COMING OUT THE OTHER END COMPLETELY UNSCATHED?? 

OH AND THEN SHE FLIES INTO FUCKIN SPACE WITHOUT A HELMET OR ANYTHING AND SHE CAN BREATHE JUST FINE???

it just makes no sense, it’s completely unreasonable and it makes her too perfect to me. Too unbeatable. I don’t like it.

But, I actually think that knowing about Tony beforehand made it a bit easier

oh gosh yeah I know I have more thoughts about this movie that I wanna say but I need to be more okay first oh man

okay hi again, it’s the next day and I’m still sad but here are some more thoughts: 

I hated the whole Bruce/Hulk think. All the good parts about each side of his character were just erased.

I don’t even see the purpose of it. 

Okay I kinda knew that Steve was gonna go back to the 40s, but I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT SO SHH

anyway, I didn’t like Steve staying in the 40s, and here’s why: 

he knew that this was the single one out of 14 million times they won against Thanos, so he knew that changing anything at all would fuck it up

but at the same time, I find it hard to believe that Steve could be aware that Tony and Nat dies and not want to do anything about it

even though he knows he can’t

so wouldn’t it have been easier to just go back to the present after he returned all the stones? So he wouldn’t have to live with that dilemma?

ALSO, I WILL NOT ACCEPT that after everything he did to get Bucky back, he just leaves him. Just like that. 

Literally the only reason this makes sense is as a setup for the Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney+ series.

This was nice, I needed this. 

I didn’t like it as much as homecoming, but I didn’t expect to considering how much I loved hoco

it was really nice to see some more Peter Parker bc i love him but also like,,, most of it was traumatized spidey boy :((( and that was sad :(

He’s literally just a child and he’s already so damaged and it’s big big sad

not that I’ve actually been to high school in the US but like,,, it felt like a high school movie okok

but then I understood that that wasn’t happening so it’s all good

he’s a pretty cool antagonist. not a fave, but pretty cool. 

OH OH FLASH IS SO GAY FOR SPIDERMAN THO RIGHT

he actually got some real nice character development that I had not expected, that was nice

all in all, great movie, I love my spidey boy.

Sooooo, it looks they did the foot washing scene from the novel. Unfortunately minus geography-changing sex and slit throats and suicide attempts but it’s cdrama not Game of Thrones so...

Heh.

Because I am pretty annoyed at the last ten or so eps of Ever Night 2, I was thinking - why don’t dramas play to their strengths? Like - do they not realize what they are?

In this case, romance.

No, dramas don’t need to fixate on romance to be good or even to appeal to me. My favorite cdrama of all time is the Story of Minglan, and the romance doesn’t get going in any meaningful sense until 30+ eps in. I love Nirvana in Fire and romance in there can fit into a thimble. But that is because there are other things to interest me (or anyone else) - family relations, interesting politics, revenge, etc. 

There is nothing wrong dedicating minor time to romance if the drama is about something else but in something like EN2, there isn’t much else magnetic stuff there. The romance in the first twenty or so eps was amazing and hit all my kinks and if the previews for later on are correct, is going to hit all my kinks later on again. But much as I enjoy it, there isn’t much else there this season despite their attempts to have the apocalypse and continent-changing war and mysticism and whatever. Most of the actors involved in those arcs aren’t very interesting and the script doesn’t really do much to make them interesting to cover the lack of acting amazingness. (Frankly, some of the actors are just fine but the script doesn’t do them favors anyway.) I have to care about these people and to find them interesting to watch their battles and schemes but I don’t. It’s like they took the one part of s1 that I always skimmed - the west shrine stuff - and expanded it to cover the bulk of eps from ep 20 on.

I can assure you, nobody (or very few people) are watching the second season for anything but Ning Que x Sang Sang. So just focus on romance, which you do really well! (And which you had so much of that anyone not liking romance probably bailed by now.)

Yet they don’t. It makes me think of General and I, the lifeblood of which was epic, sexy as hell romance between the leads and they spent the bulk of their running time on it, only to engineer an insane twenty-ep separation which basically killed the momentum dead. I ffed through those eps like nobody’s business and I am pretty sure I was not alone.

Same thing here.

Yes, I realize they are separated in the novel.

However:

1. Apparently they are not following the novel closely this season anyway, not like last. So modify it further to make the separation shorter or less absolute or w/e.

2. Shorten the fucking war! Honestly, I love period war dramas. I love period war politics. Three Kingdoms 2010 is on my fave cdrama list and it’s 100 eps of that with very few brief forays into romance. BUT!!! They do not have the budget or the choreography for amazing war scenes. They just don’t. Frankly, even if they did, because so many battles are such high power wuxia, it would become a little repetitive anyway - waves of force and bolts of dirt are only that exciting. Nor can they make their politics interesting or cast actors who can carry off those discussions (Chen Jianbin as Cao Cao in TK2010 made me watch him strategize and destroy like it was crack.) Basically, none of those battles need to be as much or as long. That way we can get to the good shippy stuff sooner. PS I didn’t love NQ in the Wilderness without Sang Sang arc in s1 but it was miles more entertaining than this, no idea what happened.

3. Giving characters room to breathe would both make them more interesting and relatable and allow us shippiness. That doesn’t even have to do with romance per se. Where are Mrs Zeng, Chao Bro’s widow wife,  lady general blah blah blah. When you remove all attachments and relationships, the characters that are left become less interesting. Hell, I’d settle for Long Qing x Flower Fanatic at this rate! It’s not just romance obviously - I wanted to see Sang Sang’s mom’s reaction to her seeming death. I wanted to see Yan Prince’s reaction to his father’s assassination. I wanted something! And that brings me to NQ x SS because even if they are not together, they could show him missing her or thinking about her distraught if they let him have a quiet moment to be a person instead of Mr. Plot. (There is no moderation btw - he spent four eps wandering around Middle Earth Tang yelling out her name and collapsing, and now he’s spent 8 eps being plot plot plot with small breaks and both the former and the latter went on for too long and should have been mixed somehow.) Hell, maybe do like the book and allow them to hear each other’s thoughts and do it at this junction.

4. I’d probably be more OK with this if this was a 60 ep season like the first 1 and I knew that after a few more rough eps we’d get eps and eps of NQ trying to win over Sang Sang-as-Haoran and then traveling and fighting whatever else together, but this season is 43 eps and there is no way. Best case scenario, we get the ending where they reunite and are happy (because there is zero chance this baby gets third season so they better not do an open ending) which is fine, but dammit, 43 eps isn’t much, why did they have to waste god knows how many on boring non-shippy stuff.

I was tagged by the very lovely, @nerdierholler to give up some of my darkest gaming secrets... Yaaay! Thank you, darling XD 

1. Favourite game of the series? Wow... Not pulling any punches, are we? Honestly, they all have things I adore and all have things I dislike. I’ve played DAO more than the others, but that’s because it’s the oldest of them all. I love the camp mechanic and just how in depth Origins is, but the combat is... dated? Da2 has Hawke, which for me is a winner in itself.  And DAI has so many wonderful characters.  

2. How did you discover 🐉 Age? I honestly can not even remember at this point! I remember playing DAO when it was quite ‘new’. I remember dying, aaannnnd then i didn’t play it again until someone showed me how amazing DAI looked. So, I bought it and then got back into them all in a big way, and destroyed my life in doing so! 

3. How many times have you’ve played the games?  Ahahahahaha... Umm... I don’t know..?  Let’s put it this way, on my laptop alone (as in ALL my console hours, which is a whole lot, not counted.) I have clocked up over 1200 hours on DAO, 720 on DA2, and 1250 on DAI... So, yes. Now you all know how very sad I am... 

4. Favourite race to play as? Dwarfs, they hands down have the BEST and funniest dialog options.

5. Favourite class? DAO; Dual wield rogue  DAI & DA2; Mage. Oh, so many mages...

6. Do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time? I kinda vary it, but not as much as I sometimes want to. I’ve never done a pure ‘asshole’ playthrough, even though sometimes I would like to see how it ends up. I blame Bioware for making the NPC’s likeable.

7. Go-to adventuring group? DAI: Alistair, Zevran, Shale. DA2: Varric, Fenris/Carver, Anders. DAI: Varric, Dorian, and random. My 3rd spot always changes so I can hear as much awesome dialog as possible. 

8. Which of your characters did you put the most thought into?

This poor sod...  Viridis - My DAO dalish elf is a close second, but she’s dead, so her struggle is over, and she went out a hero. Poor Faeron suffers every. single. day. And still finds some reason to try and smile. 

9. Favourite romance? Alistair. But that is helped hugely thanks to cute (and not so cute) mods.  This is actually hard because, Although I like to romance certain people more than others, that isn’t me saying that their romance is my favourite.  I mean, I freakin’ love Dorian, but out of all the romances I feel his was done really well, but... A little quick compared to others which had a nicer, spread over time, thing, going on. 

10. Have you read any of the comics/📚? I read one... But that was a long while ago now.  It was good! They’re just pretty pricey and very rarely on sale. 

11. If you read them, which was your favourite 📓? The one I read? 

12. Favourite DLCs? All are acceptable answers, bar trespasser. - I don’t care what you say, I know it was amazing. I know it was stunning. I know it answered a lot of questions and set up DA4 in a great way and such - BUT

This. This is too much. HE’S ALREADY LOST HIS LOVER - AND THEN THE AVERAGE, BALD, WOLF, WHO STOLE FAERON’S ARMOUR BTW, THEN RIPS HIS SODDING ARM OFF?!

13. Things that annoy you? Invisible walls. Boundaries and made to be broken!  And doors in DAI. I am always getting stuck behind one instead of running through the doorway. Please tell me it’s not just me?! I miss the doors of DAO and DA2. I am willing to sacrifice immersion on that one small point, I just want to get through the doorway, please. 

14. Orlais or Ferelden? Who in the shit picks Orlais? For Ferelden!! 

15. Templar's or Mages? Mages. Especially as i’m playing one 95% of the time.

16. If you have multiple characters, are they in different/parallel universes or in the same one? Depends.  Jereth, Xander, Tobias, and Faeron & Nico, are all from the same timeline, and my ‘canon’ run if you like. Xander also has a sister (other than Bethany) who is from the same time, but also has her own separate parallel play-through.  I mix and match backgrounds. 

17. What did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc.) Jereth called his mabari, Captain blightballs, because he is forever 12, and thinks it’s funny. Xander’s mabari was named Wrex, as in Wrex from Mass Effect.  Faeron’s Halla is named Ghilas, which is elven for ‘to go’.  Nico’s horse (yes a horse and NOT a halla) is called stormy, which is a RP in joke.

18. Have you installed any mods? Oh hell yes! Many, many mods. Gods bless you mod makers! You guys make everything so much better! And I say this as someone who has played all the games, many times, totally un-modded.  Lots of better textures for CC, gameplay changes, cheats. You name it! It’s not like I don’t know the base game at this point. 

19. Did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden?       Yes, and no.  Did Jereth want to get out of the circle, and possibly being made tranquil? Oh yes! Yes indeed. However, did he want to drink blood cocktails, watch his bromies die, and actually have to do stuff?  Not so much. 

20. Hawke’s personality? Purple. They always all end up as purple... Or at least, varying degrees. I can’t not.  Xander is 100% purple, bar maybe 4 occasions in the whole game. 

21. Did you make matching armour for your companions in Inquisition? Heh... I have TWINS. I had to try and remember who was wearing what, and which parts were dyed, and then make two sets... Utter nightmare. 

22. If your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change? Jereth wouldn’t change anything, because he isn’t that wise. Plus, in his mind he ended up coming out ahead.  Xander would have tried to save Bethany and paid more attention to his mother. He’d just try and be more responsible, I guess, but probably end up failing and just being the same smartass as ever.  Faeron... My poor boy... Faeron would do it all differently if he could. I think, if he could change one thing, he’d have let Morrigan drink from the pool. Having yet MORE voices in his head was the last thing he needed, not to mention a constant reminder of who Mythal really is...  Nico wouldn’t let Dorian get close enough to Faeron for the relationship to start in the first place. It was was a big enough thing for her to accept it in the first place... But when he decided to leave, and said Faeron couldn’t go with him... Nico didn’t take kindly to it. 

23. Do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon?  Twins? Someone dating Varric? The fact that Hawke, Amell & Alistair are all alive?? Sorry Stroud. (not sorry) Yeah... I substitute that bit... You know all those pictures of Hawke or Alistair’s LI waiting on them? Well, I just can’t ever kill Alistair and leave poor Jereth holding some wilting daisies, pouting. I mean... Who would put up with him full time?? Leliana?? I think not! 

24. Are any of your character(s) based on someone? Yeah, me. All of them. Well, mostly. Tobias for example is nothing like me in any sense. But Jereth, Xander (& his sister Lola), Faeron and Nico are all some part of me. Some of my other wardens and Hawke’s too. 

25. Who did you leave in the Fade? Sorry again Stroud. (Still really not sorry...) 

26. Favourite mount? Faeron on his Halla is definitely most epic... But the Hart sound... It’s like having PTSD, I’m forever on edge and thinking ‘Don’t stop suddenly... DON’T stop suddenly...’  I did get this awesome Dracolisk mod which made them look like Maleficent’s dragon, which was so good for my qunari mage.

My Complete Incomplete Best films of 2016

Every year I go out and watch a lot of movies but not all of them unfortunately. A combination of laziness and not wanting to be that asshole in the theater who watches the movie alone because friends are too busy will keep me from seeing a lot of the year’s more celebrated films.

So I compiled a top 5 list based on the 20 or so new films I saw this past year (about a quarter of them being old films that I had never seen on Netflix) and if it seems like I’m missing a major movie off this list it’s most likely because I didn’t see it. So don’t flame me for not putting “La La Land” or “Manchester by the Sea” on my best of list. Blame them for shitty marketing and not having super heroes and weird space aliens to compel my more shallow interests as a film viewer to go see them right away.

Anyways, without further ado here’s my complete incomplete best films of 2016 list, enjoy…

 5. “Captain America: Civil War”

A few weeks ago this might have been higher on this list but upon a re-watch on Netflix, it was slightly less amazing. 

It lost some steam but there’s no denying this was the MCU’s biggest film to date placing the most super heroes we’ve ever seen on screen together, while delivering a solid story and most of all not fucking it up like other not to be named blockbusters this year...

“Civil War’s” greatest strength is the strong chemistry of Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. and the competing personalities of their characters Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers. This film not only is a great Captain America movie that highlights who is he and his best characteristics but also in my opinion the best Iron man film as we see Stark do more than just deliver quips over and over again. He’s a sad and beaten hero and we see more how his sarcasm and wit masks a much more burdened man underneath.

We also get a fairly strong sub story involving newcomer Black Panther played expertly by Chadwick Boseman who captures not only the warrior king in this character but his strength and wisdom.

On top of all this of course it’s a damn fun action flick, sometimes to a fault of silliness but nonetheless a great popcorn flick that delivered last summer in more ways than one. Paul Rudd is even more funny as Ant-man in this film than his solo venture a year ago and we get a nice teaser of Tom Holland as Spider-man which should make this year’s reboot fun and not a dumpster fire like another not to be named blockbuster.

If “Civil War” established anything it’s that the Russo Brothers are a pair of directors fans should place trust in moving forward, so have your popcorn ready for the Infinity Gauntlet when it arrives in a couple summers.

 4. “Deadpool”

It’s rare to see a film match gargantuan hype and even over deliver in spots but last winter’s raunchy “Deadpool” did just that.

“Deadpool” is a successful film because, much like its titular character, it doesn’t give a fuck. For a film about this character to work it needed to be over the top and anything in between, ie: lightening it up for a PG-13 audience, would’ve been a disaster.

(If Disney made this the guns would be digitally replaced with walkie-talkies)

Deadpool has to be a foulmouthed, politically incorrect, immoral, crazy bastard (with a heart of course) and the film did this all perfectly. There’s countless great one-liners, fourth-wall breaking and ludicrousness going on and yet somehow through all this the film still has a heart with a decent love story going on in between all of this.

And much like “Civil War” it’s also a damn fun action flick. It’s a glorious display of sophomoric violence that the whole family many movie fans enjoyed last winter and in many ways the most comic accurate film to date.

Ryan Reynolds is already as synonymous with Deadpool as Christopher Reeves is to Superman and all us fans should be looking forward to the sequel in the near future.

 3. “Rogue One”

I’ve already talked at length recently about my love for this latest “Star Wars” film (which surprisingly is divisive amongst fans) but it needs to be said again that Gareth Edwards really knocked it out of the park with this movie.

“Rogue One” is a great example of taking established source material and mixing something new into it without disrupting what’s familiar. Yes there are a lot of references in the film but few that actually made my eye roll like some films I’ve seen this year.

For the first time in the series we see how dirty the war between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire was and how desperate that struggle was and it’s part of what makes the story and the set pieces compelling. Finally war in Star Wars is shown the way it really is: fucking awful.

But the greatest strength of Rogue One is its cast, that while may have been better served over a long miniseries, still remain compelling and tragic across a two and a half hour film. The diversity (yes that horrible word, my estranged Breitbart neckbeards) is a primary reason for that. No, diversity doesn’t automatically make a film good but it adds depth and color (heh) that can ultimately make an already good film better. And once again, what the fuck is the problem with having a few more brown people in your movie anyway?

The visuals too, regardless of how you feel about the story, are the best there has ever been in the series easily and has the best space battle, at least in my opinion, to date. And while you may find the fan service-y elements annoying, can we all agree that last scene was fucking epic?

Good, let’s move on.

 2. “Shin Gojira”

I’m probably the only person you know who saw this movie and I’m sure a bunch of you were vaguely aware at best that a new Godzilla film came out last year in Japan but it did and its arguably the best and most poignant one to date.

Generally speaking, when making a giant monster flick you do it one of two ways; you either make it super campy and over the top with lots of action like 2013’s “Pacific Rim” or you make it more grounded and serious like the original 1954 “Gojira.”

This is largely an example of why 2014’s “Godzilla” didn’t work (Gareth Edwards has of course redeemed himself with “Rogue One”); trying have it both ways by having a campy monster flick while also trying to make a dark American take on the famous King of Monsters. It might not have been a complete disaster but it was definitely forgettable.

(Pro Tip: Never give your hero two last names for a full name)

“Shin Gojira,” which literally translates to “New Godzilla” btw, falls into the dark, grounded end of the monster film spectrum, focusing instead on film’s message revolving around Japanese sovereignty and the frustrating and stagnant pace the government has when it comes to responding to real threats.

The film might require a bit of post WWII Japan study before viewing but the message can really be applied anywhere to those that feel frustration with their government’s inability to function.

(*COUGH*)

There’s even a bit of “Dr. Strangelove” going on in the early parts of the film with the constant red tape the Japanese government must go through in order to take action against the giant fire lizard.

“Shin Gojira” also contains my favorite overall action sequence of the year which combines great cinematography alongside a haunting score with Godzilla’s first scene breathing fire on Tokyo. Compared to the 2014’s own first sequence with Godzilla, it truly highlights why “Shin Gojira” is everything Edwards’ film should have been.

(I’m going to tease this to you like Edwards did all of “Godzilla 2014!”)

“Shin Gojira” is the first true reboot to the 1954 original and just as successful delivering its message to film viewers on the dangers of an incompetent government and not taking action when destruction is staring you in the face.

 1.  “Arrival”

Perhaps the only film I saw lastyear that will (hopefully) be nominated for an Oscar, “Arrival” was just a smidge above my previous two on this list but nonetheless a great movie.

The quality of the film is undeniable; with a harrowing performance by Amy Adams and strong supporting roles played by Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker alike, “Arrival” delivers a beautifully positive message in the shit storm of 2016.

It’s a homage to traditional sci-fi in the best way, while delivering a metaphorical middle finger to more modern “sci-fi” like “Independence Day” showing that maybe humanity can united for more reasons other than to just kill a common enemy. It’s a film that will make you ask questions and start discussions about existence, purpose and the importance of talking and communicating.

“Arrival” is also compelling on a visual and cinematic level combining great cinematography and art direction alongside a beautiful musical score by Johann Johannsson that at times are so breathtaking you might be moved to tears by this alone.

(I’m not crying, you’re crying!)

“Arrival” is a beacon of light in a very cloudy time humanity is in right now, regardless of what side you may fall under, and represents why more nuanced views and solutions are needed in society, that our presumed enemies or even just people we may not fully understand can be our friends if we try.

One thing for sure, Denis Villeneuve is a director everyone should have on their radar going forward and definitely has me excited for his next project later this year...
