Trans made TTRPGs
Due to… recent events that I would rather not talk about, today's post is a highlight of different tabletop games made by trans peeps! These games are fantastic in their own right, of course, but you can also know that they were made by incredibly cool and attractive people
(Also, these are flyover descs of the game, they'll get more in-depth singular posts later, this is because I am lazy)
Perfect Draw is a phenomenal card game TTRPG that was funded in less than a day on backerkit, it's incredibly fun and has simple to learn hard to master rules for creating custom cards, go check it out!
Songs for the dusk is fucking good, pardon my language, but it's a damn good post apocalyptic game about building community in a post-capitalist-post-apocalypse-post-whatever world. do yourself a favor and if you only check out one game in this list, check this one out, its a beautiful game.
Flying Circus is set in a WW1 inspired fantasy setting full of witches, weird eldritch fish people (who are chill as hell), cults, dead nobility, and other such things. It's inspired by Porco Rosso primarily but it has other touchstones.
Wanderhome is a game about being cute little guys going on a silly adventure and growing as the seasons change, its GMless and very fun
https://weregazelle.itch.io/armour-astir Armour Astir has been featured in here before but its so damn good I had to post it twice. AA demonstrates a fundamental knowledge of the themes of mech shows in a way that very few other games show, its awesome
Kitchen Knightmares is… more of a LARP but its still really dang cool, its about being a knight serving people in a restaurant, its played using discord so its incredibly accessible
https://grimogre.itch.io/michtim Michtim is a game about being small critters protecting their forest from nasty people who wish to harm it, not via brutal violence (sadly) but via friendship and understanding (which is a good substitute to violence)
ok this technically doesn't count but I'm putting it here anyways cuz its like one of my favorite ttrpgs of all time TSL is a game about baring your heart and dueling away with people who you'll probably kiss 10 minutes later, its very very fanfic-ey and inspired by queer narratives. I put it here because its made by a team, and the expansion has a setting specifically meant to be a trans "allegory", so I'll say it counts, honestly just go check it out its good shit
https://willuhl.itch.io/mystic-lilies
Mystic Lillies is a game inspired by ZUN's Touhou Project about witches dueling powerful foes, each other, and themselves. Mystic Lillies features rapid character creation and a unique diceless form of rolling which instead uses a standard playing card deck.
https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/141424/nobilis-the-game-of-sovereign-powers-2002-edition I… want to do a more general overview on Jenna K as an important figure in indie RPG design, but for now just know that Nobilis is good
https://temporalhiccup.itch.io/apocalypse-keys Apocalypse Keys is a game inspired by Doom Patrol, Hellboy, X-men, and other comics about monstrousness being an allegory for disenfranchisement. Apocalypse Keys is also here because its published by Evilhat so its very cleaned up and fancy but I love how the second you check out the dev's other stuff you can tell they are a lot more experimental with their stuff, this is not a critique, it is in fact a compliment
Fellowship! I've posted about this game before, but it is again here. Fellowship has a fun concept that it uses very well mostly, its a game about defining your character's culture, and I think that's really really cool
Voidheart Symphony is a really cool game about psychic rebellion in a city that really does not like you, the more you discover for yourself the better
Panic at the Dojo is a phenomenal ttrpg based on what the Brazilian would call "Pancadaria", which basically means, fucking other's people shit up. Character Creation is incredibly open and free, meaning that many character concepts are available
Legacy 2e is a game about controlling an entire faction's choices across time, its very fun
remember to be kind to a trans person today! oh also don't even try to be transphobic in the reblogs or replies, you will be blocked so fast your head will spin

studio ghibli ranking list let’s go
(will include nausicaä and the red turtle)
the these-are-actually-bad section:
24. earwig and the witch
Tumblr media
actually the only one I haven’t watched so it’s cheeky to put it here. but I won’t be watching it and no one will blame me.
23. ocean waves
Tumblr media
who sincerely cares about these teenagers they’re so annoying. if the boys had been gay it would have honestly been homophobic.
22. pom poko
Tumblr media
this film is about shape-shifting raccoon dogs waging a war on humans and there’s copious jokes about their testicles. so on paper a perfect film. execution wise it’s so long and so boring and you care about none of them.
the cure-for-insomnia section:
21. tales from earthsea
Tumblr media
hayao miyazaki was right to walk out of this one even though he probably is a terrible father for having done so. some of the animation was really nice but these protagonists made me yearn for the ocean waves cast because at least they have semi-personalities.
20. castle in the sky
Tumblr media
proof miyazaki was judging his son too hard for earthsea because this is basically his version of the same thing: a nice idea with good animation and the most boring boy/girl protagonists imaginable. has got that whimsy he does so nicely however.
the passable-films section:
19. the cat returns
Tumblr media
but should he have? was that really necessary? has a scene of cats walking in a procession on their hind legs though so that’s a plus.
18. arrietty
Tumblr media
visually gorgeous but otherwise a very run-of-the-mill adaptation of the borrowers, which in something that should feel wondrous is less than ideal.
17. my neighbors the yamadas
Tumblr media
some harmless and inventive fun that you can put on in the background whilst eating lunch or doing some light yoga stretches.
the don’t-harm-me-I’m-right section:
16. howl’s moving castle
Tumblr media
yes I do in fact understand the intricacies of the plot and I still don’t care. this is one of ghibli’s messiest films for sure, it can’t decide what it wants to be or focus on and the plot just seems to happen and then not happen for no good reason. I also think howl’s a whiny bastard and hate that sophie has to mother him and endure his contemptible man tantrums. a shame because she’s actually cool.
15. grave of the fireflies
Tumblr media
it was sweet but I’ve watched more moving animated films set in war-time, even. I don’t have much desire to watch it again honestly but maybe I will at some point.
the this-is-getting-there section:
14. the red turtle
Tumblr media
I liked it! an acquired taste but I really felt the harshness of the elements and the cruelty and the love. it's also very beautiful to look at, one of the most visually arresting ghibli productions.
13. only yesterday
Tumblr media
a tale of two films with this one. the parts where she's a young girl are much more interesting, but if this had stuck the landing and it'd been more even overall, could have potentially been a favourite. alas.
12. the wind rises
Tumblr media
a genuinely weird one in ghibli's lineup, in which miyazaki meshes two different stories together (one of inventive 'genius' and a doomed love story, respectively) in a likely attempt to try and grapple with his having chosen his career over all else, including family (noteworthy is that his wife was not able to retain her career as an animator). as a piece of art it's less whimsical and more mature than many of these films, but I struggle to not let my distaste for what it potentially represents get in the way of my appreciation for it as a film, but it's so blatantly personal that it's impossible.
the that-was-just-a-good-fun-time section:
11. nausicaä of the valley of the wind
Tumblr media
aesthetically one of the coolest films on this list but I don't remember the story as well. great protagonist too. must have been great to experience when it first came out in the '80s.
10. porco rosso
Tumblr media
I love this film about a tomboy mechanic and some pilot guy who went off to war and was so changed he is now a pig. watching it feels like if the mediterranean was so small it fit into your back pocket and was also populated by all your friends all your enemies and your ex-lover also.
9. from up on poppy hill
Tumblr media
I found this one boring the first time I watched it but it really grew on me with subsequent rewatches. I really like her predominantly female household and the community they share in the backdrop of the rest of the drama is sweet. the bit of drama midway through is still batshit though but in a loveable, disney-would-never way.
the near-perfect section:
8. the tale of the princess kaguya
Tumblr media
probably takahata's magnum opus with the studio, if slightly overlong. folktales are tricky because they tend to feel moralistic and the characters one-note if you're not willing to build on them but kaguya herself feels very spirited and alive. the prettiest on the list too I'd say.
7. my neighbor totoro
Tumblr media
cozy late summer comfort film. perhaps even more special now because I was able to see the london production. cute!
6. when marnie was there
Tumblr media
surprised this one has ranked so high for me but that's the power of tomboy lesbians heck yeah etc. also the fantastical element of this one is so up my alley and touches upon a particular kind of childhood nostalgia I have of being in old houses and imbuing them with magical qualities. the image of anna facing the house across the marshland is burned into my retina.
the I'd-die-for-her section:
5. princess mononoke
Tumblr media
aesthetically too cool for school and has one of the best ghibli villains and female characters (lady eboshi). they really said all the spirits of the forest are going to die in this one but well it was a nice thought.
4. ponyo
Tumblr media
my comfort movie of all-time! heartwarming! with another great female ghibli character in lisa, sosuke's mum who is legally allowed to drive like that apparently. also one I actually watched for the first time in my childhood when I was around 7 or so at an after school club. the subtitles taught me the useful and now underused gem of a phrase "bog off".
3. kiki's delivery service
Tumblr media
asks the important questions such as: what if you were a young witch from a dying tradition who moves to a gorgeous town in sweden? what if your remarkable gifts were no longer appreciated due to rapid advancements in aviation technology? what if you could live in a bakery?
2. spirited away
Tumblr media
when you're just a timid child who is scared of admittedly a lot and your parents manage to mess everything up spectacularly so now you're forced to work at the age of twelve for people who steal your identity. still one of the best honestly they may never top this as the peak of their artistic achievement.
1. whisper of the heart
Tumblr media
have you ever been a struggling artist? have you ever been in love? have you ever been obsessed with john denver's take me home, country roads? in all seriousness love a story of two artistically inclined people inspiring each other and this has a unique feel compared to other ghibli films forever favourite probably. it feels like basically no one has watched it and that's a shame. rest in peace yoshifumi kondō.

Redraw of one of my favorite Porco Rosso scenes with Shockwave and Windsy!
Damn seekers are hard to draw.
The context for this would be that Windshear was telling him about some of the things she saw/did as a mercenary. She initially doesn’t see herself as a good or even redeemable person, to the point where she lashes out when she’s thanked for inadvertently helping people.
The more I think about the scene as a whole, the more parallels I see between Porco and Windshear.
Not gonna lie I did Not wanna draw the second half of this, I’m still not used to drawing Windshear but we needed the context

I drew Crimson Hawk on the beach while I was riding on a train in Germany. She’s living the Porco Rosso dream
Plus a bonus Sulejmani and Hawk hug that I don’t really like, but I still wanted to share. Having ocs is great I can just use them to hug characters I love

kicked off 2025 by watching my favorite ghibli movie again, Porco Rosso, and I'm full of feelings about it
it is a movie that says as much through images/dialogue as it says by omission. the friend i watched it with (who was seeing it for the first time) was confused by the ending. 'wait, so does he turn back into a human, or doesn't he?'
I said 'well... we don't know!' which she found too vague, but there is a longer version of that answer, the reason why that apparent vagueness is actually a better fit for the story.
i like that we don't get visual confirmation of the outcome of the curse at the end. we do get Curtis taken aback and yelling at Porco to let him see his face, which seems to point to Porco having regained his human self as Marco; but it's hard to be certain, since earlier in the movie, when Fio can't sleep at night, we see a glimpse of human Marco that then goes away. that seeds the possibility that Curtis' glimpse at the end may also have been temporary or imagined. but Marco's story was never about a desire to be free of his pig form; in fact, when Fio questions him about how it happened or how to fix it, he shrugs it off. he has bigger things to worry about—but even if unrelated to his goals, his appearance is undeniably an expression of the movie's theme.
Marco tells Fio in that scene about a near-death experience he had, when all his fellow pilots were shot out of the sky in the war, until only he was left. his plane flew "on its own" up above the clouds, and he saw up in the distance a long line of pilots on their planes, forever flying out of reach, and he watched his friends who just died fly up to join them. he tried to go in the stead of Gina's new husband, but couldn't. he thinks what he saw was not pilot heaven, but hell.
Fio tells him the fact that he couldn't take his friend's place means that "god was telling you it wasn't your time yet" (loosely quoted from Japanese, I don't know the English line). but Marco replies that he always saw it as god telling him to "fly alone for the rest of your life"
this isn't the story of how he became a pig that Fio asked about, but it might as well be. Marco is someone dead set on going it alone. he has left the army, he won't ally with any other force, he is the last one left of Gina's friends. the fact that he looks like a pig only reflects how alone he stands: he is very visibly set apart from every other character because of the way he looks. there are 'people' and then there is him, 'the pig'. he refers to this directly when refusing Ferrari's urging to return to army: "I'd rather be a pig (ie alone, but he doesn't say that word) than a fascist". his convictions aside, he takes pride in being different, even visibly so.
he says to Fio, someone that he tried to keep at arm's length the moment he met her, who then grew on him, that looking at her makes him feel like 'there's still hope for the human race'. notably, it is during that same scene (though at the start) when we see our first and only glimpse of human Marco in the present day.
and though Fio has her own ideas about curing him with a kiss like a frog prince, and we do see her kiss him before that final image when Curtis' reaction implies he might be human again, it's not about the kiss at all.
it's about connection, about the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, about how human it is to seek companionship in each other even through the worst times.
Marco's "curse" is none other than a mix of survivor's guilt and a stubborn resolve to remain alone as he thought he must, after that vision of his fellow pilots in the sky. he sets himself aside from other people to the point that he stops being human at all. it is only in the moments when he allows himself to see the good in the human world around him, and be a part of it (having opened up to Fio and watching over her at the hideout, then at the end apologized to Gina and thus acknowledged the context between them) that he can, even if for a moment, be a person again.

That terrible post for Disco Elysium but with a Witch finding a Cat has been going around again ...I think there's something so peculiar about the way "Ghibliesque" aesthetics have become associated with these like... Cozy rustic settings without any real conflict or deeper themes. Ghibli has made stuff like Ponyo and The Cat Returns, for sure. But the absolute most iconic movies they have put out, and the stuff which inspires these settings the most, tend to not shy away from a particular bitterness in the world. Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa are post-apocalyptic settings where the world is scarred and people who can't let go of the old wars endeavour to weaponize the relics from this era and repeat the same mistakes. One could read very much the political situation of Japan in the 1980s into this. Other films by them include things such as Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises, which obviously are set at a time with some serious things, while even something my My Neighbour Totoro was originally released alongside Grave of the Fireflies as a way to kind of make you feel less garbage afterwards. Ghibli does not shy away from mature themes at all, and true movies that are cozy and belong to that healing genre out of them are actually quite rare... Older settings influenced by these did not suffer any such particularities. When you play Grandia, you are dealing with an army. Little Tail Bronx came out with a sequel recently which involves Dog-Fascists invading Dog-Paris. Even Megaman Legends is still inherently about the world before and the machines it left behind. So, the more I think about it... Maybe Witch-Finding-A-Cat Elysium may be a good idea entirely in spite of itself. Maybe there actually IS a place for a ghibliesque game about a witch finding a cat that somehow also uses the mechanics inherently tied to telling a story where you can't help but cling to a false memory of the past, or throw yourself into half-understood political concepts. ...But like. The girl who pitched it probably wouldn't like it very much.
