The one thing in fandom that frustrates me is fandom no longer using separate ship names for who top and bottom in ships.

"They're the same ship!" Yes, they do contain the same characters and most of the time (dependent on the creator) the only thing that has changed is their positions in bed but when I'm looking for nsfw stuff, THAT IS IMPORTANT.

I have preferences! Sue me! So yes, it's frustrating that fandom has made it harder for me to find my preferences because fandom thinks to stick everything under the same label and make finding things a nightmare.

I wish fandom would stop viewing multiple ship names as bad and go back to viewing them as an organizational tool that will get your work to the audience it intends.

Call me old fashioned but I miss it.

Alright… what if Color and Red were friends?

Picture this: there is a celebration in the Omega timeline. The Stars just won a decisive victory over Nightmare’s gang. Everywhere you turn, there is someone either breathing a sigh of relief, or actively cheering on the victors.

Except those two skeletons in the corner, one with scarlet eye lights and one wreathed in vivid flames. They sit. They watch the festivities, somewhat - every few minutes one or the other checks their phone or glances around apprehensively. It seems like they are waiting for bad news, and while they don’t often acknowledge the other, it is clear that they are supporting each other in that moment.

I do think Color and Red would have been very secretive at first when it came to their connections to Killer and Dust - after all, declaring any sort of bond with a member of Nightmare’s gang could spell disaster for everyone involved. In time though, they figure it out - maybe after a few runs. Maybe Color finds out when Red is forced to kill Dust. Maybe Red finds out when Killer is dusted for associating with Color. Neither of them would want to talk about it at first, it would feel like a betrayal.

But maybe one day Red sees Dust get injured in battle. Dust is unable to contact him, and Red grows increasingly concerned… until Color pulls him aside and informs him that Dust is alive still, Killer mentioned it the last time they spoke. Over time, this becomes a habit - they keep each other up to date on what’s happening at the castle, exchanging tips on avoiding Nightmare and reasoning with his high LV workers.

Maybe they meet up after battles like this one, so the moment either Killer or Dust is able to update one of them, the other will know as well.

(Maybe there are times when they find out they failed, and then they are able to grieve in the company of one of the few other people in the multiverse who would empathize with that pain - the pain of losing someone so universally hated, someone still so precious to them.)

They understand each other. And they provide each other with small moments of comfort and companionship, in a multiverse where those feelings are far too rare.

What is Hackle you ask? Hackle is a ship name referring to Miss Ada Cackle (Headmistress and Spells Teacher of Cackle's Academy) and Miss Hecate Hardbroom (Deputy Headmistress and Potions Teacher of Cackle's Academy) from the show Worst Witch (2017). Diluc jolted awake, his chest rising and falling rapidly. His breaths are short and heavy. Next to him in bed -where you should be- is much too cold. He panicked thinking his nightmare might actually be his reality until he heard the click of the bedroom door opening. There you stood with a cup of tea in your hand. 

“Diluc, are you alright?”   

Tears brimmed his eyes, threating to fall as he looked at you. Closing the door you quickly walked over to him, placing your tea on the nightstand next the bed. When you sat yourself on the bed, Diluc’s arms were immediately around you holding you so close as if you’d disappear into thin air if he didn’t, and to him and his still panic stricken mind, that was a very possible outcome. 

“Do you want to talk about it, love?” You spoke lovingly, voice barely above a whisper.    

His response was a simple shake of his head, opting to instead pull you closer to him. 

“There’s still some tea left, I could go get you a cup if you’d like?” You whispered fondly.   

His response was a simple “Just hold me please.” His voice wavered slightly as he tried to will himself not to cry. 

You pulled him impossibly closer, his head in the crook of your neck, and as you whispered sweet nothings into his ear, the dam finally broke and his tears fell. His body shook with silent sobs as his tears stained your shirt --but you couldn’t care less about your shirt, your mind was only set on calming Diluc. 

“Please... Please d-don’t leave me.” His voice broke through the silence. 

“I’d never dream of leaving you, my love.” You cooed at him as you shifted yourself and Diluc into a more comfortable position. As his tears slowly came to a stop, so did his rapid breaths as they evened back out in the comfort of your embrace. He eventually fell asleep, not long after by you, falling asleep to a pleasant dream with Diluc in your arms --the tea by the bed long forgotten.

In my opinion there are actually two types of FNaF fans. I know that this gets said a lot about different things but hear me out:

Type 1: Canon worshippers. These people don’t really care that much about what makes a good story, but they do really care that every aspect of their timeline is 100% undeniably canon. These people look to books, specific lines from the games, random Twitter posts, and anything they can get their hands on to find more canon lore.

I find Type 1s tend to characterize William as more fully evil, tend to have Charlie or Elizabeth die first, often include illusion disks, nightmare gas or other misc. book things in their timelines. Often they won’t call CC Evan, and will opt to just call him Crying Child instead. You will often find these people on YouTube, claiming to have “Finally solved FNaF”

The biggest pro of interacting with Canon Worshipers is that they tend to have lots of very interesting theories that could be backed up with canon. However, a con is that they tend to often claim that you’re “wrong” about the games, and tend to not play nice with Type 2.

Type 2: Story Lovers. These people actually don’t care what the canon is all that much. Sure, if they get new information they might incorporate it into their personal timelines if they like it, but if they aren’t a fan then they will ignore it. These people look to their hearts for the answers to lore questions, and only pull from canon if they want to.

I find Type 2s tend to care more about the characters and often make characters into almost their own creations. They tend to put Evan’s death first (though not always) and will call him Evan or Joshua or something. William Afton is usually less cartoonishly evil. Often Henry or Michael are portrayed as not just innocent victims, but as morally grey characters themselves. You can usually find these people on Ao3, writing multi-chapter epics about their own version of the lore.

A pro of interacting with this side of the fandom is that it’s very creative. Type 2s search for the meaning behind characters and events and will create some incredible art/writing to express this. A con is that they are often insane and can sometimes will ship characters ceaselessly, making it hard to get along with type 1s.

Conclusion: Calm down guys it’s just Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Liking Webtoons and wanting to analyze them is such a nightmare because most of their fandom activity is in the comments on the episodes, and a lot of the people there love to start beating characters the minute they're too morally grey/flawed or they're considered threatening to the main ship in any way.

For example, using For My Derelict Favorite, Helios gets dragged way too much at times. Like, I see people make him out to be a purely malicious force who's just as bad as Diana as if it's not emphasized that he acknowledges his feelings are wrong and will never act on them and the main reason why he harbors them is because the subejct of those feelings, Hestia, is way more competent than his wife.

A wife who's refusing to acknowledge nuance or her fading powers out of fear and insecurity and shuts down any attempts at healthy communication he attempts to initiate to the point she chases out the woman who basically raised him when his mother died. He can't rely on her and has basically no support system but he can rely on Hestia and his feelings are more born out of a desire to have somebody close who he can rely on.

The difference between Diana and him is WILDLY big, with Diana chasing out anyone who tries to question her and replacing them with the corrupt temple, choosing to drop her husband the minute he doesn't validate her batshit wild choices. She then decides to go and steal another woman's husband, who she previously condemned to the point of him becoming suicidal, because he defied her strict moral compass. Helios chooses to protect her still because she's his wife and he loves her and doesn't want to give up on her which is an objectively bad move, but he's in an awful position where anything he does will result in some kind of loss.

But I see the comments crawling with complete vilification and ignoring the character's honestly fascinating struggles so they can piss on him for threatening the beloved main ship. I even see some people compare him to WAYYYY worse characters, like Sovieshu from The Remarried Empress, which takes some sort of mental gymnastics as they are only similar to a surface level extent. Sovieshu is unredeemable but Helios is trying and making some bad calls while under pressure along the way.

For another example lets look at Annabel Lee from the amazing comic Nevermore. Everyone in the series is morally grey to some extent and some people will piss on Annabel Lee for being cruel, selfish, etc in such a shallow way. Instead of actually looking at her, a flawed character in a really fucked up situation trying to protect the one she loves at the cost of others, some people just say she's a bitch and want her to be expelled from the narrative for it. We can analyze Annabel Lee and why she’s Like That in so many ways because she's an incredibly dynamic and round character but some people don't care about that they just care she was Super Mean in some way and deem her The Enemy.

I have so many more examples like the fighting in the Jackson's Diary comments about who was the bad guy in a situation where both characters hurt each other in awful ways (I could go on about that for hours and might make a seperate analysis on it) but I think this post is long enough and I don't feel like inciting the possible wrath of any more comic fanbases.

Okay so I used to read a LOT of merthur fics back around 2011-2013 and have only recently hopped back on the bandwagon so this will be a mix of some oldies i've revisited and some newer fics that have made me insane :))))

0. this one goes without saying but The Student Prince is seriously one of the best fics in any fandom i've ever read to this day. I relisten to the podfic every single year and it SLAPS every time. If you haven't listened/read recently this is obviously my #1 rec hahahha

Okay onto some actual recs

1. Tired by spqr

King Arthur gets enchanted and keeps having dreams about his court sorcerer merlin :))))) He obviously doesn't say this to Merlin, but Merlin notices he's not been sleeping and Arthur comes clean about having 'nightmares.' When Merlin tries to figure out a counterspell, he accidentally casts it on himself and ohh nooo they're both having sexy dreams about each other but also have to act normal in real life ITS SO YUM. This fic was surprisingly soft, like yes they are having some full on dreams but also the bits that made me extra insane were just the little soft moments between non-dream merthur 🥺

This was a school holidays read and i remember reading this in the staff room of the elementary school i was working at trying so hard not to SCREAM. At one point i had to go on a spirited walk around the building just to get my energy out because it was JUICY.

If you like: canon era fics, court sorcerer merlin, the intimacy of domesticity, arthur with a beard and merthur being so in love but also fucking clueless about it this the fic for you <3

2. But It's a Good Refrain by lady_ragnell

Merlin runs a relationship advice/matchmaking service radio show and Arthur's ex calls in and rips into him on air. Arthur calls in to defend himself and he and Merlin butt heads. An oldie but such a goodie. I love this one because the characterisation feels very natural. Plus i loooove arthur POV fics. Merthur are so sweet in this one and i love love love the dynamic of their respective friendship groups merging. It also features the fandom favourite m/f crack ship that is elena and gwaine which im always here for.

If you like: silly modern AU friend group nonsense, Arthur POV fics, snarky Morgana, and a fic writer who understands the sheer power merlin emrys' 🥺 face would have over not only Arthur but literally ANYONE who looks at him, this is the fic for you.

3. Second Chances by DragonDucks

This is a canondivergence/fix-it fic set immediately after Arthur dies in 5x13. In this version Arthur tells Merlin he loves him with his dying breath and Merlin's magic sort of implodes sending him back in time to 1x1. So it's like sad s5 Merlin getting a second chance to save Arthur in the body of tiny baby s1 merlin.

I'm gonna be honest i'm still reading this one but it has me kicking and screaming!!!! Most of the dialogue is repurposed from the show which makes it extra juicy to me and its just delicious i love it so much. The POV switches between S5 mourning merlin and S1 gay panic arthur and its soooooo good i'm loving it so far. Some of the side characterisation is a little weird but Merthur are PERFECT. It NAILS that yummy introverted Arthur and fond Merlin characterisation.

If you like: canon era fix it fics, time travel, Arthur pendragon falling in love with merlin bit by bit and actually having space and time to grow as a person, and merlin emrys being like no everyone shut up about my destiny i just wanna have a good time with my boyfriend, this is the fic for you.

4. All is Semblative by Whitefox

I just fucking love crossdressing fics okay 😇. This is cinderella meets Merthur. Uther is throwing a ball to find Arthur a bride and servants aren't allowed. Out of spite (and, lets be real, also jealousy) Merlin tries to disguise himself to sneak in and ends up accidentally turning himself into a princess. Arthur hits it off with a weird but beautiful mystery princess who turns out to be his manservant he's been in love with this whole time. Simples.

If you like: Prince Arthur knowing about merlin's magic and being cool with it, fairytale AUs, accidental genderbending (but still canonically mlm merthur), and arthur pendragon singlehandedly embodying demisexual panic this is the fic for you.

5/6. As Long As We Have We AND No Matter How Far Away You Roam by lady_ragnell

Lady Ragnell again because I looove the way they do modern day Arthur. and i've been going through their stuff. These are both super cute christmas fics (I know its a little early but I couldn't help myself). In the first one, Uther has just died (rip uther you will not be missed) and Arthur accidentally collects lonely friends to spend christmas with him in the empty house. At the same time he befriends Merlin, the owner of his local bookstore, and merlin brings his own group of strays to Arthur's christmas...and obviously everyone gets along super well and merthur fall in love. The second one is a fake dating. T get his parents off his back, Arthur lies to Uther and Igraine that he and merlin have been together for years and Merlin (plus his mum and his sister Freya) has to play along one christmas..and obviously everyone gets along....and obviously everyone gets along super well and merthur fall in love.

If you like: found family, cute christmas fics and fluffy merthur these fics are the ones for you!
