Angela Orosco Silent Hill 2
#in anticipation of the incoming remake#i tried my best to imitate the SH font but#silent hill#silent hill 2#angela#angela orosco#theme of laura (reprise)#i've said it before but in spite of its occasionally clunky diction i think silent hill 2 is an unusually emotionally intelligent game#for any year and still today but especially so for where gaming storytelling was in 2001#and for as many pitfalls a story like hers could've dipped into i think it particularly shines through with how they treated angela#not just choosing to depict victimhood as something that can be ugly and fractious and open quote ā€œdifficultā€ but then this#actively rebuffing james for trying to be a white knight and dressing him down for it too#ā€œi know you mean well and want to help but this isn't a simple problem"#ā€œand it's really hurtful and a bit insulting that you act like you canā€#the switching to a first person view turning it into an address to the player as well#maybe even old videogame tropes too#ā€œthis isn't some princess in a castle kind of situation dude this is more serious than thatā€#it felt like a very deliberate statement about the depth and severity of a trauma like this#and in doing so showing it so much respect#then angela just leaves#and you never see her again#i really don't think it was to imply that it consumed her i think it was to underline what was just said#this isn't your problem to fix#this is where your part in this story ends#there is no quick easy solution to this and you won't get one#there's some strength in that

QUICK NO ONE'S LOOKING
(See readmore for thoughts, cope, bonus, etc.)
Anyone else up thinking about Ratio's big, strong, secure arms and how warm and all-consuming they could be in a hug or embrace. :/ Anyway
I just wanted to draw them being cute and seizing a sliver of a moment where they could have some PDA silly time without actually having any eyes on them. They're public figures and working adults with very clear boundaries between public persona and private life (to varying degrees of "in a sad way"), so while it may be in Aventurine's nature to constantly blur lines for various agendas and self-preservation (read: play "the flirt" without an aligned goal), I believe that in an actual relationship they'd be fairly private.
It's kind of fun to break your own rules, though! Ratio would be more upset about the consequences, though. He's a little bit of a hypocrite, which is devastating for someone of such discipline, but nobody's perfect.
I'm of the mentality of, "If you're tired of working on it, then just post it!", so here are some fun peripherals that I didn't feel like adding:
Some staff in the background sweeping up to evoke a blended sense of fragile privacy and liminal time.
A laptop on the aquarium/bar/counter because there's something fascinating about seeing people on their work laptops in public.
The rest of their clothes (casual friday)

DP x DC: The Most Dangerous Card Game
Ok so Danny has essentially claimed earth as his. And he is fully aware that there are constant threats to the planet. Now he canā€™t stop a threat that originates on earth (thatā€™s something heā€™ll leave to the Justice league) but he can do something about outside threats. Doing some research on ancient spells, rituals, and artifacts, he cast a world wide barrier on the planet to protect it from hostile threats so they cannot enter. This will prevent another Pariah Dark incident. However, barriers like this come at a price. You see, there are two ways to make a barrier. Either make one powered up by your own energy and power (which would be constantly draining) or set up a barrier with rules. The way magic works is that nothing can be absolutely indestructible. It must have a weakness. The most powerful barriers werenā€™t the ones reinforced with layer after layer of protective charms and buffed up with power. Those could eventually be destroyed either by being overpowered, wearing them down, or by cutting off the original power source. No, the most powerful barriers were the ones with a deliberate weakness. A barrier indestructible except for one spot. A cage that can only be opened from the outside. Or that can only be passed with a key or by solving a riddle. So Danny chooses this type of barrier and does the necessary ritual and pours in enough power to make it. And he adds his condition for anyone to enter.Ā
Now the Justice league? Find out about the barrier when Trigon attempts to attack, they were preparing after he threatened what he would do once he got to earth. How he would destroy them. The Justice league tried to take the fight to him first but were utterly destroyed, so they retreated home to tend to their injuries, and fortify earth for one. Last. Stand. Only when Trigon makes his big entranceā€¦heā€™s stopped.
The Justice league watch in awe as this thin see-through barrier with beautiful green swirls and speckled white lights like stars apears blocking Trigon and his armyā€™s advance. The barrier looks so thin and fragile yet no matter how hard the warlord hits, none of his attacks can get through and neither can he damage said barrier. Thatā€™s when Constantine and Zatanna recognizes what this barrier is. Something only a powerful entity could create. For a moment, the league is filled with hope that Trigon canā€™t get through yet Constantine also explains that itā€™s not impenetrable. And clearly Trigon knows this too for he calls out a challenge.Ā
And thatā€™s when, in a flash of light, a tiny glowing teenager appears. He looked absolutly minuscule compared to Trigon and yet practically glowed with power (this isnā€™t a King Danny AU though).
And that is when the conditions for passing the barrier are revealed. And the Justice realize that the only thing stopping Trigon and his army from decimating earth. The only way he can get throughā€¦.is by beating this glowing teenager in a card game.Ā
Not just any card game though. The most convoluted game Sam, Danny, and Tucker invented themselves. Itā€™s like the infinite realms version of magic the gathering, combined with PokĆ©mon, and chess. And Danny is the master. So sit down Trigon and letā€™s play.
(The most intense card game of the Justice leagueā€™s life).
After Danny wins, this happens a few more times with outer word beings and possibly even demons attempting to invade earth, yet none have been able to beat the mysterious teenager in a card game. Constantine might even take a crack at it and try to figure out how to play. Heā€™s really bad though. Every time this happens, the Justice league worry that this might be the time the teenager looses. Yet every time, he wins (even if only barely).Ā
Meanwhile, Danny, Sam, and Tucker have gotten addicted to the game and play it almost daily. Some teachers might seem them playing the game are are like ā€˜awww how cuteā€™ not realizing this game is literally saving the world. Jazz is just happy they arenā€™t spending as much time on their screens playing Doomed.
#DPxDC#Kizzer55555 ideas#Danny makes a card game to save the world.#Technically he worded the ritual so that they had to ā€˜beatā€™ him as those are the most powerful barriers and most reliable.#keys can just get lost or stolen (like the one to Pariahā€™s Coffin)#A riddle would be useless once someone figured out the answer. Like how no one takes the sphynx seriously anymore.#(Sorry Tuck. But itā€™s true).#And there is NO WAY Danny is just leaving a hole open for anyone to pass through. No thank you!#Soā€¦beating him. But itā€™s not like Danny wanted to fight soā€¦he edited the ritual a TINY bit. Card games are good. Much less painful too.#Danny Tucker and Sam made the most complicated card game they could imagine.#Itā€™s based on their strategies for fighting ghosts. Capturing them in thermoses. And MUCH based on a on field battle strategy.#It often requires spontaneous thinking on the spot. So Danny? In his ELEMNT. It doubles as practice for his actual ghost battles too.#They had SO much fun making this.#Sam added an entire series of plant cards that act as traps and healing ointments and duds that just take up the field.#Tucker added legitimate hyroglyphics combined with Latin as well as English and ghost speak.#Yes. You actually have to speak that language to play. With proper pronunciation. (Amity Parkerā€™s think the three are talking gibberish.)#I headcanon Sam and Tucker are fluent in Ghost.#Constantine WILL figure this game out SO HELP HIM!#Some of the cards also have combinations related to constellations either in name or placement on the board.#By the way the board is based on a Hexagonal summoning circle with Rhunes along the edges#And the placement of the cards on the board and on what rhune MATTERS.#Also the cards move disintegrate and have certain abilities. Think of Harry Potter Wizard Chess.#But they are normal when Danny plays at school. This is just for āœØeffectāœØ Against invaders.#Danny faces multiple opponents. He also halts alien invasions.#While Danny COULD stop crime on earth heā€™s not sure how to fight a normal human and hold back so he sticks to ghosts.#The Justice league are going crazy trying to figure out who this entity is and after deep research are convinced this is some sort of#Ancient being who has protected earth for millenia. They have paintings on ruins and everything.#Danny is not aware they think this.#Raven starts praying to Danny as if he is a god and wrangles the other Teen Titans into doing so as well. Danny is still unaware of this.#Danny is not a King or an ancient. Just a very VERY strong ghost.

Soulmark AU + Sleeping Beauty ; requested by @candeartist422!
For the last few years, Dukeā€™s been waiting for his soulmate to die.
It sounds cruel to say it that way. But the waiting is more painful, he thinks, than just mourning a lost love. Itā€™s not like most people ever meet their soulmates anyways; his parents werenā€™t meant to be, but they still loved each other and had a life together. He wishes he could turn his focus away from his soulmate, but Duke is a romantic at heart and has always wanted to find the other half of his soul.
But since he was fourteen, his soulmark has dulled, fading in and out of color. What was once a vibrant blue crystal star, with eight points and a swirl of watercolor hues around it, dimmed more and more until Duke was sure he was watching his soulmate die slowly.Ā
His soulmate didnā€™t die then. Whoever they are got better, his soulmark gaining color, but it never went back to the way it was. For years after, Duke would check at the beginning and end of each day, keeping track of when it faded and when it regained its color.Ā
He thought his soulmate was sick. In and out of hospitals, fighting to stay alive.
And then it went nearly colorless.Ā
Duke doesnā€™t remember much about that day. He knows he woke up, brushed his teeth, the lifted up his shirt to check his soulmark in the mirror. The blue was almost completely gone, the star on his left hipbone nearly gray with how colorless it was. He started at it for a moment, shocked, and reality slid away from him as he retreated into the safety of his mind, fully dissociating.Ā
Bruce had found him when Duke didnā€™t show up for breakfast. He held him and offered quiet words of comfort that Duke couldnā€™t understand, but just having someone with him lessened the hurt of losing his soulmate.Ā
Seeing the color come back the next day, faint as it was, hurt even more.
A year later, Duke still canā€™t break the habit of checking his soulmark twice a day. It hasnā€™t changed at all, still faint and dim, but carrying just enough color to show that his soulmate was still alive. At the very least, they were still breathing, but his chance of ever meeting them is basically zero. Still, he canā€™t help but hope, wishing that he could meet them even once before they die and leave him forever.Ā
ā€œSame as ever,ā€ he murmurs to himself as he brushes his thumb against his soulmark. Heā€™s terrified that heā€™s forgotten how beautiful the blue of it was when his soulmate was healthy.Ā
Duke doesnā€™t let himself think on it too much anymore. Though his thoughts often turn to his soulmate during quiet moments like these, the busy nature of Gotham is usually more than enough to pull his attention back to the here and now. Thereā€™s no use in obsessing over his soulmate anyways; theyā€™re just going to die, sooner or later, and Duke knows heā€™ll never get to meet them. Theyā€™ll just be another empty space in his life, right next to his parents.Ā
ā€œCome on, Thomas, focus,ā€ he tells himself firmly, then gets dressed and heads down to the kitchen for breakfast.
The manor is quiet. It usually is in the mornings, with everyone from the night shift dead asleep and trying to get as much rest as they can before they have to start their day. Not that many of them stay in the manor these days; Duke and Damian are the only permanent residents at the moment, but Steph usually stays half with her mom and half in the manor during the summers when sheā€™s home from college, and the others drop in whenever they feel like it.Ā
Bruce lives more in the Batcave than the manor, so he doesnā€™t really count. Itā€™s also why Duke is surprised to see Bruce awake and dressed like a normal person, drinking coffee in the kitchen as if this is a normal occurrence.Ā
ā€œMorning,ā€ Duke offers.
ā€œGood morning, Duke,ā€ Bruce replies. ā€œSleep well?ā€
ā€œWell enough. Alfred out or something?ā€
ā€œHe may have kicked me out of the Batcave to clean it up a bit,ā€ Bruce answers tiredly. ā€œWant me to make breakfast?ā€
Duke has heard the horror stories of Bruceā€™s attempts to make edible food in a kitchen. In the interest of not dealing with food poisoning, Duke shakes his head quickly and says, ā€œNah, itā€™s fine. I was kinda wanting to eat out for breakfast. Get out there as me, and not a mask, you know?ā€
ā€œMind if I join you? Alfred may forgive me for not sleeping if I willingly go outside.ā€
Duke laughs. ā€œSure man, as long as you pay.ā€
ā€œIā€™ll drive, too.ā€
ā€œWhat, donā€™t trust me behind a wheel?ā€
Bruce gives him a tired look, eyes dead and dull. ā€œI have taught all my children how to drive. The day I willingly let them take the wheel when I am not actively dying is the day Iā€™ve been replaced by a robot clone of myself who doesnā€™t know better yet.ā€
ā€œThat isā€¦ very specific. Is that a thing you usually worry about?ā€
ā€œIā€™m Batman. I have to worry about everything.ā€
Yeah, that tracks. Duke wouldnā€™t be surprised if he has at least five contingency plans for that scenario, should it ever happen. ā€œWell,ā€ he says, ā€œRight now, all you need to worry about is having your wallet and driving us down to The Foodie Nook. Iā€™ve been craving their breakfast plates for ages.ā€
Bruce doesnā€™t object to his choice of restaurant and follows Duke down to the garage, grabbing a random set of keys and pointing it out to the many cars he owns. One near the front blinks its lights as it unlocks and Duke cheerfully tosses himself into the passenger seat as Bruce opens the garage door.Ā
The drive into Gotham is smooth. They donā€™t hit traffic until they reach the bridge that leads into the city proper, taking them away from the quiet of Bristol. The morning is busy, but not enough that Duke worries about being out as the Signal to help keep the peace. Itā€™s a normal type of busy, one borne from people going about their lives, feeling safe enough to go out.Ā
The Foodie Nook is entirely local and very popular, so the parking lot is nearly full. But they expanded their space last year, which means he and Bruce donā€™t have to sit outside while they wait to grab a table. Bruce keeps conversation light and casual, well aware of the many listening ears around them, and itā€™s nice, feeling normal for once.Ā
Well, as normal as life can be with Bruce Wayneā„¢. The server who comes to lead them to a table realizes who sheā€™s talking to after she gets a proper look at them while holding open the door and promptly stutters over her words.Ā
ā€œNo need for any special treatment,ā€ Bruce laughs lightly, ā€œWeā€™re just here for breakfast. Nothing special.ā€
ā€œOf course,ā€ she replies, cheeks red. ā€œUm, right this way! Weā€™ve got a table by the windows for you. Just two, yeah?ā€
ā€œYup! Just two. Thought this was a good day to spend some time with Duke. Heā€™s a great kid, you know, Iā€™m glad I was given the opportunity to foster him.ā€
The sunny, cheerful Bruce Wayne persona is so different from the usual Bruce he works with that it feels like heā€™s standing next to a stranger. But his words are sincere and warm his heart, filling up the gaps that his soulmate has left.Ā
ā€œHere you are!ā€ their server announces, showing them to their table. ā€œIā€™ll be right back with some menus.ā€ Sheā€™s gone in a rush, and other customers glance over before quickly averting their gaze.Ā
Itā€™s one of the unspoken rules of Gotham: give the Waynes their privacy while theyā€™re out in public. Questions and conversation are for public events only, but if they see a Wayne out and about during a normal day, everyone leaves them be unless spoken to first. Duke used to follow those rules as well when he was just another Gothamite. Itā€™s strange being on the other side of that now that heā€™s in with the Waynes.
Duke barely has to look through the menu when itā€™s handed to him. The breakfast plates are his favorites and he gets one every single time he comes to The Foodie Nook; stacked full with breakfast foods from around the world. As a kid, he loved the Mexico Plate, but these days heā€™s craving either the Brazilian Plate or the Vietnamese Plate.Ā Ā
He canā€™t decide on which one and thinks about tossing a coin to decide, but seeing how thatā€™s Two Faceā€™s whole thing, he decides to hold off and settle the matter with eenie-meenie-minnie-mo.Ā
He gets the Vietnamese Plate.
Bruce, on the other hand, reads through the entire menu like itā€™s a novel, then leans over and says rather loudly, ā€œDuke, whatā€™s a tort-illa.ā€Ā
The pain he feels hearing that is only worsened by the amusement in Bruceā€™s eyes. Heā€™s doing it on purpose, playing up the Brucie act for the public so he can psychologically torment Duke. A few nearby customers choke back laughter, turning away to hide their smiles.Ā
Duke shakes his head and says, ā€œDonā€™t worry about it. Itā€™s just food. Donā€™t ask any more questions, I just want a peaceful breakfast.ā€
ā€œWell then,ā€ Bruce replies, ā€œI suppose I know what to order now.ā€
As if she was summoned, their server reappears before them, cheeks still looking a little flushed. ā€œHi! Ready to order?ā€
She writes down their orders quickly, valiantly keeping a straight face at Bruceā€™s mispronunciation of tortilla, then heads off to deliver their orders to the kitchen.Ā
Rather than draw out a conversation with Brucie Wayne, Duke settles for playing a few idle games on his phone; his current favorite is one quiet cat cafe game where he directs cats into fulfilling cafe orders.Ā
Bruce, despite being out in his civilian identity, is working. Heā€™s on his Batman phone, which looks the same as his other cell phones except this one has a bat symbol sticker just barely hiding a Superman sticker on the phone case. His brow is slightly furrowed as he reads whatever file heā€™s accessing from the Batcomputer. Itā€™s a little worrying but it could be anything. Bruce makes the same expression when he reads one of Timā€™s snarky comments getting quoted in the news.
But thatā€™s not Dukeā€™s problem! Heā€™s here to enjoy his breakfast and it will take the end of the world itself to remove him from his seat before heā€™s done eating.
The game takes most of his attention until their food comes out, and by then Bruce has tucked away the smallest of his Batman mannerisms. They enjoy a normal, peaceful breakfast. Bruce ends it by asking their server if she has any debt thatā€™s weighing her down, then giving her a tip thatā€™s at least five thousand dollars above that.Ā
She does cry and Bruce hugs her. Itā€™s very sweet.Ā
As soon as they get back into the car, his easy going smile drops and Duke knows some superhero nonsense is about to take over his day.Ā
ā€œDuke,ā€ Bruce starts, seriously, ā€œI received a message from Zatanna.ā€
ā€œDonā€™t drag this out,ā€ Duke says, ā€œJust give it to me straight. What terrible thing is about to happen to us?ā€
ā€œItā€™s nothing too big. They just recently defeated a magical being who had been tearing apart secret government facilities in Illinois. He had both magic and a high tech weapon, which they confiscated and are delivering to me. The government agency he was fighting was suspiciously interested in the weapon, and based on their behaviors and newly revealed work, Zatanna made the decision to turn the weapon over to us so it doesnā€™t fall into the wrong hands.ā€
Bruce smoothly merges into traffic as he speaks, getting them onto the road back to the manor. Thereā€™s a look in his eyes that means heā€™s keeping a lot unsaid, and Duke knows without a doubt that whatever this government agency was doing is bad if Zatanna needs Batman to act as extra security.Ā
Heā€™s not sure about her decision to trust the weapon to be safe in Gotham, either. Sure, Batman will keep it as safe as he can, but with their luck, itā€™ll end up in the hands of a Rogue and lead to a lot of death and destruction.Ā
As soon as they cross the bridge and return to Bristol, Bruce steps on the gas and the car tears down the road. Without any other cars to worry about (or traffic laws), it takes barely two minutes to reach the manor, when the gates open for them and let them into the garage.Ā
Alfred waits for them by the door, looking them over with a critical eye. ā€œI see you have managed to go outside, Master Bruce. Whatā€™s the special occasion?ā€
ā€œJust breakfast,ā€ Bruce answers. ā€œIā€™m heading back down to the Batcave. Zatanna will be here soon to deliver a weapon.ā€ Heā€™s gone before Alfred can say anything more, hurrying down the hall and turning the corner, disappearing from sight as he heads towards his office.Ā
ā€œI see we have yet to break that bad habit of his. Did you enjoy your morning out, Master Duke?ā€
ā€œSure did, Alfred. Iā€™m, uh, also going down to the Batcave. Heā€™s definitely not telling me a lot about whatā€™s going on, so Iā€™m just going to read about it over his shoulder. Iā€™ll be back up for lunch, though!ā€
ā€œAnd perhaps youā€™ll be able to drag Master Bruce away from that cave of his,ā€ Alfred comments wryly as he walks with Duke towards the office. He gives Duke a nod, then splits away from him, returning to the kitchen where Duke can hear Damian speaking to someone, probably Tim by the annoyed tone of his voice, and mentally wishes Alfred luck in handling them.
Duke sets the correct time on the clock in Bruceā€™s office and heads down to the Batcave, taking the steps two at a time.Ā
Bruce is already at the Batcomputer, shoulders tensed, when he arrives.Ā
ā€œMore bad news?ā€ he asks as he makes his way over.
Bruce doesnā€™t bother looking away from the screen as he says, ā€œMore details about the fight. It seems the magical being called himself a ghost and was going on a rampage due to a betrayal. He says they nearly killed his son.ā€
ā€œOh, yikes.ā€
ā€œAnd two of the scientists working with the government agency said that he stole their son and is keeping them from saving him.ā€
ā€œYikes,ā€ Duke says with more feeling.
He doesnā€™t get to hear anymore details about JLDā€™s fight with this ghost when he catches a flicker in the corner of his eye. Duke turns and stares at the empty space in the Batcave near the medbay and watches as colorful magic gathers and swirls in dizzing circles. The portal opens a moment later and Zatanna steps out, looking exhausted and lightly singed.Ā
ā€œBatman,ā€ she greets, holding a white gun that looks like it belongs in an early sci-fi movie from the 60s. ā€œThe GIW is trying to arrest us. Constantine keeps burning their badges and documents so it shouldnā€™t be a problem, but they are determined to get this back. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they came after you next. Theyā€™ve got some way of tracking things, but I didnā€™t have time to get any details before I had to leave.ā€
Bruce takes the gun from her hands carefully, looking it over with a sharp gaze. ā€œWhy would a ghost want to use a gun?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t know. He had a variety of powers, too.ā€
ā€œWhat does this do?ā€
ā€œShoots ice. He never let it go and nearly burned me alive for taking it before we subdued him.ā€
ā€œWeā€™ll keep it locked up,ā€ Bruce promises.Ā
Zatanna sighs. It looks as though a physical weight fell off her shoulders. ā€œThanks. Iā€™m going to head back to stop Constantine from getting into a fistfight with the GIW agents.ā€
She opens another portal with a waved hand and a muttered spell. Bruce is already walking away to set the gun down on a work station, so Duke is the one to wave Zatanna goodbye.Ā
By the time he reaches Bruceā€™s side, the gun is already dismantled, all pieces neatly set aside. Sticky notes denote which pieces go together and in what order. It looks the same as most guns, save for the aesthetic, but the heart of it is a glowing blue orb, large enough to cover the entirety of Bruceā€™s palm, and it brings a chill to the air.
Duke stares at it and feels his soulmark burn ice cold.
ā€œDuke?ā€
Itā€™s in his hands. He doesnā€™t remember reaching out to take it, but itā€™s in his hands. He canā€™t take his eyes off of it, cradling it gently and bringing it closer to his chest.Ā
Itā€™s the same blue his soulmark once was. Before his soulmate began to fade, before every day became a waiting game to see how long his soulmate will last before they die.Ā
This has something to do with his soulmate. Heā€™s sure of it.Ā
He wonā€™t let anyone take it from him.Ā
ā€œDuke. Give that to me.ā€
He doesnā€™t feel like heā€™s in his body. Heā€™s detached, floating somewhere outside his body, puppeteering his limbs, making them move without feeling the motion. Shadows condense around his feet and Bruce takes a step back, wary.Ā
ā€œDuke,ā€ he says again, but Duke canā€™t find any words, canā€™t draw on his voice, canā€™t even look away from the bright, bright blue of the orb. It pulses lightly in his hand like a heartbeat.Ā
Bruce reaches a hand out.Ā
Heā€™s pulled back by shadows before he can get close, and Duke holds the orb against his chest, right against his heart, and feels the cold seep into him.Ā
ā€œDuke. I need you to look at me.ā€ This time, Bruceā€™s voice has Batmanā€™s growl in it, a heavy command that he canā€™t help but instinctively follow. He looks up and meets Bruceā€™s eyes, but he canā€™t focus. All his awareness is in his hands and the heartbeat of the glowing orb.
ā€œI have to protect this,ā€ Duke manages to whisper. ā€œIā€¦ I think itā€™s alive.ā€
ā€œOkay. Letā€™s get you to the medbay so you can sit down. Weā€™ll figure this out, Duke.ā€
Bruce slowly, carefully, sets his hand on Dukeā€™s shoulder. He keeps his attention away from the orb, so Duke allows it and lets Bruce guide him to the medbay and onto one of the medical cots. Bruce leaves him after a minute of quiet fussing, muttering about calling Zatanna.
Whatever. None of that matters when the heartbeat of the orb grows stronger, steadier, and Duke feels it match the beat of his own heart.
Time slips away from him. Distantly, he hears people move around the cave, speaking in low tones. A hand presses against his shoulder, warm, then moves away.Ā
The orb in his hand moves.Ā
Duke blinks slowly, then claws his way back to awareness, pushing past the haze thatā€™s fallen over his mind. The orb turns over in his hand, then cracks right down the middle. The glow grows stronger, washing the medbay in blue light and a symbol appears on the orb.
Itā€™s his soulmark.Ā
Later, he wonā€™t be able to say why he did it. There were no thoughts, no reasonings, no explanations. Duke simply moved on instinct and lifted the orb up to his face and pressed a soft kiss against it.Ā
One moment, the orb was still.
The next, it had burst in a flash of light that blinded everyone in the Batcave, and then a thin, injured teenager had fallen into Dukeā€™s lap.Ā
Hands immediately grab him, pulling him away from Duke. The teenager puts up no fight, eyes barely open, but he reaches for Duke weakly. On his wrist is the bright blue snowflake, the color strong and vivid.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s me soulmate,ā€ Duke whispers as he watches Bruce and Tim set the boy down on another medical cot.Ā
ā€œWhat?ā€ Tim says, turning to face Duke, concern clear on his face.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s my soulmate,ā€ he repeats, louder. Then, panicked, he pulls up his shirt enough to see his own soulmark; the color is still dull, weak, barely there, but itā€™s more blue that it has been in a while. He doesnā€™t need to say anything. Tim sees the dullness of his soulmark, looks at the boy, and puts the pieces together on his own.
ā€œIā€™ll call Doc Thompkins,ā€ he says, already moving to fix everything. Bruce remains where he is, making sure the boy is tucked in and breathing steadily before he returns to Duke.Ā
ā€œAre you alright?ā€
Duke swallows roughly, unable to tear his eyes away from the boy. Heā€™s pale and thin, as if heā€™d been starved, and thereā€™s frost beginning to spread on the bedsheet from his fingers. ā€œHeā€™s my soulmate,ā€ Duke manages to say. ā€œHeā€™s been dying for two years.ā€
Bruceā€™s eyes a hard, a determined light in them. ā€œWeā€™ll save him,ā€ he promises.Ā
If anyone can, itā€™s Batman.Ā
If anyone can, itā€™s them, Batman and the Signal, and their entire network of family and friends.Ā
Dukeā€™s been waiting for his soulmate to die all this time. Now, heā€™s going to save him.

Couldnā€™t stop thinking about Dust being able to pass as Classic. So I had an idea where Dust replaces Classic in a timeline and steals(?) his partner.

YJ S3 Dick, still in the midst of his fever dream, hides underneath the 'souvenir' instead of behind some boxes, and accidentally opens the airlock trying to take care of the Parademons. The others get it to close... but not before Nightwing is thrown into space.
There, he stares at the ship holding his friends and mentors. There, he wishes more than anything that he can, somehow, survive. There, he tries to live, if only so his family don't have to bury him like Jason.
There, Nightwing dies, wanting to save everyone, even with the cold seeping into his bones far too quickly for a regular section of space.
Then, Dick opens his eyes to... Earth? There's a little house, and grass, and trees, but there's a bubble of green over it all. Outside of that green was an entire castle, one that looked like it should have far more support beams than it does for even a hope that it stays standing.
And the sky was swirling shades of that same green. It makes him think of Lazarus.
"Well, that's something you don't see every day." He whips his head behind him, a bit too fast for Earth's atmosphere, but it doesn't hurt him. Past the bubble of green was a blue-skinned adult in purple robes, the insides of a grandfather-clock fitted inside their torso, and a black staff with a stopwatch on its top. Beside them was a man with snow white hair, glowing green eyes, a crown of frozen fire dancing above his head, and the most galaxy-like cloak Dick's ever seen clasped to his shoulders. He's wearing... a hazmat suit? Maybe? The twinkling stars and odd lighting of wherever he is were giving him a bit of a headache.
But in front of those two, within this bubble, was...
"DICK!" Wally shouted with unrestrained glee, a blur overtaking his spot for barely a heartbeat before Dick's stuck in a crushing hug that he reciprocates once his brain stops feeling like its melting.
He doesn't know how long it took for them to calm down, but the man with the crown spoke up after a time, as Wally was still wiping their faces free of tears. "Welcome to the Infinite Realms, Nightwing." Dick barely even registered that he was still wearing his suit, but now it felt suffocating. "I suppose you're the one Clockwork was holding out for; There shouldn't've been enough Ectoplasm around you to form a Ghost, and your physical body's still in space. I can see why you like this one, though, Clockie," he states flippantly, turning to his companion. Almost like he didn't expect Dick to pay too close attention to what he was saying.
"Either way, there's two options for you." The man didn't let Dick swallow his tears and question anything. Dick's not sure if he's grateful or not. "First: Stay in the Realms permanently. You'll see Kid Flash whenever you want and learn to be a Ghost with the denizens of the Realms. Maybe find your parents."
"But..." Dick pulls away from Wally, keeping him at arms length, eyes flitting between them. The two outside the bubble were distinctly... ghost-like, so the mentions of 'Ghosts' make sense. But Wally looked... alive. A bit pale, a bit thin... but alive. Dick can't see any of his own skin to see if it was blue or tinted that way, but the Nightwing symbol on his chest kept flickering between its own blue and this 'Realms' green. "But--What about the others? What about you? Why can't you come home?" The last two, he focuses on Wally, because now he can feel a heartbeat beneath his gloves. Wally's alive. He's alive.
His friend just shrugs. "Something about their portals not fit for the living? I'm meant to wait for someone to figure out a permanent portal, but they won't tell me how long that'll take." Wally glares at the... 'Ghosts'? There was a heat to it, but it also seemed like this was a well-worn argument.
"The permanent portal was always an 'if', Wallace West. And that is entirely dependent on if Richard Grayson takes the second option," the clock Ghost--Clockwork?--speaks up. But instead of the adult Dick was expecting, there was an elderly Ghost in their place. Still with the time motif. Was that... more literal than Dick took it?
"Yes, the second option..." The crowned man glares daggers at Clockwork. The temperature dips below comfortable. Dick tries to blink the spaceship and stars out of his sight, withdrawing his arms from Wally to try and warm himself. Tries to remember he's not in space. "The second option is that you return to your body... changed. You'll be able to protect Earth better, stay with your alive family, save the Lost Ones... for a price."
Dick doesn't know if he should ignore the plural in 'Lost Ones'. He doesn't know if he's reading too much into how, in this Realm, apparently only his parents were able to be found. Where's Jason? He doesn't dare hope, but...
"What's the price?"
The man smiles and a ring of blue forms around his waist. It splits in two and travels up and down his body, replacing the cloak and whatever clothes he was actually wearing with a NASA shirt, worn jeans, and red sneakers actually duct taped together. The blue tint to his otherwise tan skin fades completely. His hair turns black. His eyes turn blue.
He was like a taller, slightly slimmer, way hotter version of Bruce.
The man walks through the bubble, but doesn't disturb the grass beneath his feet. "You become the Ghost King's vassal." Dick flinches away and almost hides behind Wally. "Not my idea! But, well... it is either this, or your permanent death."
"What does becoming a vassal do to him?" Wally asks, gently trying to stop Dick from breaking his ribs with how tightly he was hugging himself. Does he even have ribs?
"He gains my powers. Ice, electricity, invisibility, intangibility, flight... He becomes a Halfa. He becomes what I was, in life. Just... needing to make offerings to me, now and then. Something like that, at least. I give him powers, he gives me a chunk of, I don't know, chocolate once a week. Like a warlock."
Wally keeps talking to the man, keeps getting information that he knows he should pay attention to, but something in his chest screams to accept this deal, and he can't focus on anything else.
Nightwing can protect. He can return to life and go back to BlĆ¼dhaven, be the Vigilante they need. He can visit Gotham every now and then, help with cases and stop criminals from harming others. He can see his brother. He can see his friends. He can eat Alfred's cookies, and have little get-togethers with Babs and the Team--hell, he can argue with Bruce.
And all he has to do is... give an offering to this guy? The Ghost King? Every once in a while?
"There's no other price?" The King turns his attention to Dick. His eyes had shifted to a blue-green that almost hypnotize him. The green swirls, the blue forms and melts like snowflakes, and he can't look away.
He takes another step forward and Wally steps to the side. There was familiarity between them. Wally deferred to him. Dick can't quite tell why. Though, with how Wally hasn't once looked at Clockwork, maybe it's because he's... grounded? Are all speedsters in trouble with, what, the Ghost of Time? That... actually makes perfect sense.
"I'll be honest, Nightwing: You've impressed me." The weight behind the King's words lifts the ones that've been on his shoulders since he was nine. "You remind me of myself. Maybe, if I wasn't a Halfa... If I had a mentor... I could've been like you.
"Despite Clockwork's insistence over the years that I get back in touch with the living, I've held off. When he eventually suggested that I help create another Halfa, I locked him in his tower for twenty years. I didn't want anyone to go through what I had. But, now... I see that you won't. You can't. Even if you hide this deal--our shared powers... You'll still have people by your side. Strong people. Smart people. You can already handle yourself. And I'd love to see what you can do--who you can save--with my help."
There was maybe two inches between their faces when the King finishes speaking. Dick roves his eyes across the other's face, trying to find the common and familiar ticks that show lies and deceit and manipulation. All he finds is sincerity and genuine care.
Wally plays with his fingers from the corner of his eye, gaze hopeful as he looks between the two of them. Wally, who was alive and breathing and able to leave if he accepts. Eventually. Somehow.
Dick Grayson sends a quiet apology to his parents and hopes they will forgive him for being a little bit selfish.
"I accept."
He flings his eyes open. Above him, domino mask too wobbly to be properly secured anymore, was Robin crying and begging him to wake up. His hands were sloppily placed over his heart. Batman was trying to drag him away, the firm set of his jaw screaming grief.
Nightwing gasps once he registers his lungs burning.
There's a large cacophony of noise, multiple bright suits and people hounding over him, and the distinct artificial taste of slightly-too-much oxygen that the ship with the Parademons had. That he flew out of and died. He was still too cold.
Someone moves their arm beneath his knees and shoulder and Dick passes out.
(Dick 'Nightwing' Grayson dies in space. Ghost King Danny Phantom likes this too-human Hero. They split their souls in half, take one piece of the others, and all they know is that Phantom is now Nightwing's Patron Deity. Danny uses ice, for electricity killed him. Dick uses electricity, for ice killed him. They are opposites, and yet so incredibly similar. Clockwork was looking forward to when Danny starts putting off his paperwork to hang out with his new 'friend'.)

Remember: The burning sensation is part of the process.
#Mouthwashing#blood#body horror#Emphasizing here that this is in reference to a media and character and not a cry for help on my end.#Mouthwashing is one of those games that tickles my brain and checks all the boxes for my niche interests -#-but it wasn't something that got the silly comic part in my cortex firing up. My analysis brain is eating well though!#What said...It is impossible for me to see this scene and not say out loud: ā€œMe in the middle of my work day".#While there is a lot more going on with curly I personally resonated a lot with his struggles with burnout.#Burnout feels like mouthwash to me. That you keep rinsing out your mouth trying to get rid of the rotting smell#but it's just surface level solutions. The real cure requires something far more significant to actually make a difference.#The job 'is hard' and 'everyone struggles'. It's part of the process right? You're tired? Anxious? Depressed? Us too! Chin up!#Actually I resonated with a lot of things within Curly (this is a curly positive space - he's not perfect. He's just human).#One thing being his desire to see the good in people and believe in their potential.#Because here's the thing. Some people truly do just need someone in their corner who stands by them so they can grow and improve.#And some people will take advantage of your kindness. You focus so much on their humanity while you stop being a person to them.#The horrifically toxic relationship persists because Curly tries to see the bigger picture and believes in the good within.#Anyone who has lived through constantly trying to reframe the hurt as something else knows-#-just how many excuses your brain will make to avoid cognitive dissonance. It's human psychology.#Jimmy sucks so bad. But we the audience have the privilege of not having years of baggage associating him in our minds as 'friend'.

IT WAS ERIC AFTER ALL!!!! I'm so glad we got to meet him (before Vil snaps him away with those Infinity Gauntlets) (can't wait to see what happens when we get the matching Infinity Tiara to go with them, there will be no survivors)
(sorry to be so slow/rough lately, just got a lot of stuff on the ol' brain at the moment! alas, if only I could spend all my time drawing incredibly stupid characters I mean I do but)

Wayne Family Adventures literally had 2 entire seasons worth of healthy dad Bruce who sits down and talks with his kids. He brought Jason down from a nervous breakdown. He got Damian a dog. He told Tim that it's Batman who looks out for Robin. He felt incredible guilt over missing even one of Cass' recitals. He plays with the kids, he takes care of them, he talks with them about family and what they mean to him. He puts in the work.
And yet we still have people coming out of the woodworks to claim that being an asshole is "integral to his character" the one time he says fuckshit to the kids.
Look I came from from multiple abusive households (yeah that's right I'm pulling this card). I know what that looks like. This ain't it. What Bruce said is fucked up, no doubt about it. But this is after potentially years of kindness and heartfelt discussions. Saying something fucked after all that healthy behavior isn't abuse, it's a call for help. And that's what the kids are trying to do. He's scared. He even admitted to Damian that none of it matters as long as they're safe.
This arc isn't to point and go "oh look at how horrible Batman is and how he treats his family". It's showing how grief and trauma can twist the people you love into something that hurts, and the effort and pain needed on both sides to fix that (like in the Jason episode, how he lost control and almost hurt Dick and then told them to take care of Bruce). Keeping this idea that violence and abuse is integral to Batman and his relationships is the same mentality that has kept main timeline Bruce in that behavior for the last god-knows-how-long.

No but actually I've been really thinking about it and Mihawk just doesn't do shit by halves does he? he's so obsessive.
He doesn't just like red wine it's literally his favorite food
He doesn't just like swords, his is practically his soul made physical. Yoru is so coded in his dna that they literally had to make a replica for his clone.
he isn't just into swordsmanship he literally became the world's best and strongest swordsman
He doesn't just like to duel he's overdone it so much that no one can hold his interest anymore
He didn't just kill marines he was the literal marine hunter.
He doesn't just wait for Zoro at the top he collects every single bounty poster obsessively tracking his rise
He doesn't just let the kids live with him he adopts them, and teaches them how to be stronger. Doesn't let Perona go until he knowns that he can no longer properly guarantee her safety.
He can't just have a garden he has to go full on farmer strawhat and all.
He doesn't just like Shanks he wants to consume him whole he let's the memory of their duel haunt him and even 12 years later he can't fully forgive them. This might be the single most important relationship in his life.
There isn't a moderate bone in his body. He's either making decisions just because or letting them consume him whole.
I bet it's all the Catholicism.

I saw an interesting post a while back that said ā€œCapcom made us [Miles and Diego/Godot] only have like two(?) interactions because they knew we would be unstoppable with a brother dynamicā€ and tbh it stuck with me bc it was intriguing.
So yeah that potential brotherhood, but that Godot/Diego AU I made (that I still need a name for)
Also I bet Gregory Edgeworth would have smelled like a bit like coffee, and so Diego just reminds Miles of that comforting presence šŸ˜ (the von Karma estate was a tea household, so he didnā€™t smell much coffee after DL-6 and didnā€™t realize how much he missed it/reminded him of his father)

The Helena diaz of it all has me fascinated. Iā€™ve said for a long while that Eddieā€™s real issues are his mommy issues and this episode just cemented for me that weā€™re gonna explore that and deal with it.
Because itā€™s Helena who forced Eddie to grow up to fast - because her husband wasnā€™t around much - so she pushed Eddie into de facto parent and husband role ls - selfishly filling her needs and ignoring the damage it was doing to her son (it is a form of abuse in my book).
Eddie then had the audacity to fall in love with and marry Shannon and get her pregnant. Itā€™s why Helena was always so off with Shannon - she was punishing her. She is also punishing Eddie for all of this and his refusal to return to El Paso only cemented further her bitterness and resentment.
Now she does have Ramon back she doesnā€™t need Eddie any longer to fill that role so she is still punishing him and part of that is tied into her glee over now getting to parent Christopher - something she has always been intent on doing the doppelgƤnger just gave her the opportunity- as well as allowing her to further punish her son and his love of Shannon.
Her barbed comments about building a pool were all about showing what she can provide Christopher - how she is parenting him better than Eddie - itā€™s part of her mind games - making Eddie feel like more of a failure as a parent to his son.
The reality of course is that the reverse is true - Helenaā€™s parenting is all superficial, flash and showy - it isnā€™t the hard day to day parenting when things get tough and you have to be the bad guy. While Eddie has made mistakes, there is nothing superficial, flash, or showy about his parenting. Itā€™s why bucks comments about Eddie being a great dad are so important.
Eddie feel like a failure right now and that he is entirely to blame for everything. But in reality, while he does bear a bit of the responsibility, the truth of the matter is that he needs to learn and deal with the fact that all of it actually stems from Helena and her abuse of her young son - Shannon never stood a chance just like Eddie never has.
#genuinely donā€™t see how she can get any sort of redemption arc#but this is 911 so maybe theyā€™ll find a way šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø#Helenaā€™s treatment of Eddie is a form of child abuse - it has done so much damage to him psychologically#I do really hope we finally get to meet Sophia and adriana as part of this arc beciase I think it might be very revealing#I am also wondering if Ramon had a stache in the past - and that is what Eddie is subconsciously trying to mimic#and that is about him trying to regain his mothers affection - trying to fill that husband role she forced him into#and that shaving it off is a part of his dealing with that and choosing to free himself from her clutches#and in doing that - standing up for himself etc - it will be the trigger that v ring schristopher back#the catholic guilt and Eddieā€™s queerness is also all tied up in this - the church reinforces and condones Helena and her actions#the Catholic Church has a long history of abuse of children in all itā€™s horrendous forms#so Eddie seeking solace in that direction think it will help him find away back to Helenaā€™s good books only for it to open a few doors he#has bolted shut#as for the queer aspect - forcing Eddie to grow up too fast and fill this role of husband to his mother and parent to his siblings means#Eddie never got the chance to learn who he actually is - to explore his sexuality and all that goes with that - at the age one normally#would - as a teenager and into your 20ā€™s. it explains so much around his relationship with Shannon and dealing with the helana of it all#and the queerness of his identity - ā€‹will also allow him to actually let Shannon go#Eddieā€™s arc is going to be incredible - heartbreaking and gut wrenching - but incredible#Helena diaz itā€™s on sight - she is evil and cannot be redeemed in my eyes!#911 spoilers#Thinky thoughts#eddie diaz#911 abc
