With the autumn season comes change. All around the Isle, canopies begin to transform into canvases of brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and purples. A cold breeze blows from the north, prompting the need for warm clothes and spiced drinks. The earth begins to grow quiet in light of the coming slumber, allowing the twin moons to shine throughout the longer nights.  But just because the world slows doesn’t mean that its residents do . . . Please refer to the ARCANUS ISLE COMPENDIUM for creature and plant references.

Overview.

During the peak of the autumn season comes a celebration of bountiful harvests and the memories of loved ones. The Yestereve Harvest occurs in October, featuring various fall activities with plenty of food and traditions that honor those who came before, and celebrate the blessings we have today. 

Spiced and sweet foods flood the streets during this season of giving thanks. This is particularly true as the Gladus Feast approaches. A three-day celebration across Aevum Isle, where families come together to enjoy bountiful harvests and tall tales of history. Many Aercon also enjoy the Spirits Jubilee, a celebration of ancestors and the legacies that have been brought into the present day. Every family celebrates a little differently, but there is plenty of fun to be had anywhere an Echo looks. 

Activities:

Spirits Jubilee

Spirits Jubilee is a two-week-long party ( from Oct. 2nd - 19th ) dedicated to honoring ancestors, legacies, and the magic that dwells in all denizens of Aevum. Participants are encouraged to share gifts of candy, celebrate with parties and events, and dedicate time to honor the lives of those who came before. Many families will build temporary memorial shrines filled with flowers, food, candles, and other decorations to remember their ancestors. Others will focus on the family members around in the present with parties and fun traditions. 

During this time, children of all ages dress up in costumes. These can all range from historical figures, jobs, legends, fictional characters, and more. Some of these costumes may also include Echoes who are of Ardent rank or higher! The kids will go from door to door, collecting sweets from those who are giving them out (any household that has lights on) after they say the phrase “ Spice and Sweets! ”. 

Echoes can expect little ones to make appearances at their doorsteps, though this activity is not just limited to the younger crowd. Adults and teens may participate, too. All across the city, people are hosting costume parties and competitions showing off people's creative talents. 

Some places may also offer the following kind of candy: 

Effect Candies: These treats may appear to be just the same as ordinary candies at first glance, but upon further inspection, these have a rainbow, shimmering glow about them. These candies are imbued with magical properties, bringing to life parts of your costume for as long as you eat them.  The originator of the candies is unknown, but it can be assumed it might have been a historical alchemist. Though their name has been lost to time, their legacy lives on with fervor! These treats are a community favorite during Yestereve Harvest, especially by those who seek the spice side of this activity.  EXAMPLE: - If you are dressed as a ghost, then eating the candy may allow you to phase through walls.  - If you are dressed as a pirate, you will find yourself gifted with a sword and stuck in talking in pirate speak. - If you are dressed as a dragon your wings will help you fly and you can breathe fire. Note: These candies can be received at any time and can be activated at any time during the duration of the festival. These candies do not transform the person into their costume, but rather create an extra effect to enhance the costume.  They will only work while the Echo is in a costume.  Candies may be saved after the event is complete, but they will lose their shine and magic and will taste bitter instead of sweet.

Downtown Arcanus.

The Fall Festival 

All throughout Downtown Arcanus, the streets come alive with the celebration of the autumn season. All of the shops and cafes sell all manner of autumn decor and fall-flavored favorites, following the shifting colors and cooling temperatures. Even the Archives get into the spirit by decorating the tables with pumpkin arrangements and harvest-themed displays.

Arcanus University is hosting a widespread Fall Festival, run by the student clubs with aid from the faculty. Each club has a different activity associated with it. The art club hosts face painting, the culinary program makes pumpkin pastries, the book club passes out fall books, the chess club has a giant chess board, etc. 

There are also plenty of carnival games to compete for prizes and a few small rides. There is a petting zoo hosted by the Whisperwind Hacienda for visitors to see. The Festival also has a section of booths dedicated to local artists selling home decor. There is plenty of fall fun to explore here as the university continues in full swing of its new semester.

Meanwhile, the Aurora Amphitheater will be hosting multiple locally directed and staffed performances. Everything from dance recitals to Shakespearean dramas, and even musical theater is welcome. Every day has a different show. 

The St. Azalea’s Foundation is also working in tandem with Fanalean farmers to host weekly food drives to provide warm meals and materials for those in need. During the Gladus Feast, they will be hosting a massive celebration buffet style for local Aercon and Echoes alike.

Rosewood District.

Twilight Screams

Several of the clubs within Rosewood have come together to host a special event called the Twilight Screams! The buildings have been decorated and refurbished into haunted houses for the season, filled with volunteers dressed up as monsters and ghouls meant to frighten visitors. Many of the costumes have been enhanced by effect candies, though the actors are not supposed to touch the visitors. That hasn’t stopped rumors from circulating that members of the Venom Rings have infiltrated the party intent on causing a bit of a ruckus. 

These “haunted houses” are hosted all throughout the month, and are typically busiest in the late evenings. Food and drinks are served outside the venues, usually trying to promote business to the bars, clubs, hotels, and other amenities of the Rosewood District. There are four main clubs that people can visit. Each has different themes to them. The following houses are listed in order of least scary to most scary.

After Tea Party - Decorated to mimic a high-end mansion, every ghost and ghoul is invited to the mansion for a high tea. Share in spooktacular blends and sweets that will be to die for! Or partake in a ballroom dance with music that will send shivers up your spine. These ghosts seem lost in their ways, spending eternity in a happy death. The halls seem never-ending, created by illusions of mirrors, fog, and projections that make it easy to get lost. 

Junkyard Jumpscare - The loudest and most eclectic of the houses. Actors pose as monsters and humans wearing thick layers of torn garments and junk armor, shouting about anarchy and rebellion and purging society of the status quo. They prefer to get into your face and utilize plenty of pyrotechnics and effects in order to make themselves known. Wars are always being fought. Will you pick a side? 

Raided Temple - An Egyptian-style tomb with many of a Pharaoh's treasures, creating a unique decor and plenty of puzzles for the visitors to solve. There’s a lot of story in this house, detailing the betrayal of the pharaoh by his best friend who stole his wife and kingdom and now his animated corpse seeks vengeance. The actors here wear long cloaks and dark masks to hide their faces, with trailing scarves behind them. Do not touch the treasure! Lest the curse of the pharaoh’s wrath fall upon you!

Nuclear Science Facility - After an accident with a nuclear reactor, this house’s whole facility has become engulfed in radiation, causing everything inside to become mutated. As visitors travel through the space, they may see some morally questionable experiments that occurred in the various rooms. Toxic goop and monsters can be found everywhere, making this house the hardest one to complete. 

Lunar Coast.

Memirror Fog 

While the cities and forests celebrate, the Lunar Coast finds itself growing dormant. Creatures retreat to warmer waters while fewer visitors make their way to the beaches. The Comet Promenade remains active (as the show must go on!), but something else stirs in the air. 

Across the Arcus Cove sets a permanent fog, visible regardless of the weather in the area. The Kruptos Lighthouse is always visible during this time along Quill Pillar Shores, caused by the imbalance of Aether at play. Sailors tell stories about the Memirror Fog. An autumn phenomenon that settles over the shores of Arcanus. After watching the seas for long enough, visions of the past begin to appear. For Echoes, this can mean they can see glimmers of people, objects, or even places that belong to their homeworld. Beckoning them out to sea to follow them.

Going out on a ship will eventually lead you to Arcus Cove, where the visions will persist. If an Echo is drawn even further in, they will find themselves among the ruins of the old Aether Temple on the coast. Here, Echoes may relive experiences from their past while under the fog's enchantment. The mists can only rely on the memories of the Echo and will replay as they were perceived at that moment. Even if the Echo behaves differently now than in their memory, it will continue onward, as if it is playing a recording. The memories are unable to be shared unless both Echos were present for the featured memory. However, anyone viewing from the outside may be able to break the enchantment.

In order to break out of a Memirror on one’s own, the entire memory must be played from start to end. Trying to break out before the memory has fully played out will result in the fog following the Echo as a shadow no matter where they go until the Echo finishes what it started.

Fanalea.

Gladus Feast

One of the most sacred and treasured celebrations of Fanalean locals is the Gladus Feast ( from Oct. 28th-30th ).  The Gladus Feast is a prime time for loved ones all around Arcanus to gather together and celebrate a plentiful harvest. Fanaleans go all out when it comes to the food of the feast. Most of which prominently feature local harvests such as:

Sapeng Cheeses, Mushroom Medleys, Whole Yaffle Hog Hams, Gourm Turkeys, Pecus Grain Breads, Perlbery Sauce, Star Fruit Pastries, Arcana Pumpkin Pies, and a variety of classic fall favorite veggies and dishes. Mulled wines and spiced drinks are also provided by the Honeyglow Meadery.

There is plenty more to do during the Gladus Feast than eat plenty of food. While farmers prepare the fields to rest for winter and finish up the harvests, they also utilize the space to host all sorts of fun activities. 

Pumpkin Patches - available for Echoes to purchase pumpkins. Carving stations are also available to create fun and unique designs into the pumpkin’s face. Each participant’s pumpkin will come with a complimentary candle.

Corn Mazes - mazes with varying levels of difficulty. Participants who get to the end of the maze will be given snacks of their choice!

Bulb Beetle Gazing - Join sightseers across the Fanalean Fields to watch the Bulb Beetles fly and sing their mating songs.

Hay Rides - pulled by falcaniform-drawn wagons, these hay rides travel all around Vesper Town Farmlands to marvel at the dall decor and wheat fields. 

S’more Making - Join the Fanaleans in Vesper Town Plaza as they share spooky stories and old legends around the central bonfire!  

Wreath Making - Echoes can make a beautiful fall-themed wreath with materials supplied by the locals including ribbons, wires, and other wreath accessories.

Candle Making - Echoes can make custom, wonderfully scented candles to give to their friends or keep to remind them of their loved ones.

Everyone is invited to participate, especially when it comes to cooking!

Aether Reserve.

Totem Poles 

“Find yourself through the eyes of another. “ the ancient texts say. 

Throughout Silverbrook Hollow, totems stand scattered across the forest, each bearing carvings of all manner of creature. The origins of the Totems are unknown to locals, and all denizens will claim that these totems have always been there, and certainly have heard warnings to not get too close. Particularly when their eyes mimic candlelight.

Exclusively during October, the totems’ Aether stir once more. Echoes who venture into Silverbrook will eventually note that the eyes of each animal seem to always be following them. This is true no matter where they walk. Should an Echo make eye contact within five feet of the pole, or should they touch the carvings, the Echo will find themselves face to face with their own personal Alter. Soon, they will become engulfed in the totem’s light. Above the canopy, a small orange-and-gold aurora borealis lights, filled with the silhouettes of animals and other creatures..

When the aurora diminishes, the Echo will find themselves transformed into their Alter. Without an Alter Totem, the transformation lasts for three days. After which, their normal form will be restored. 

Echoes with shapeshifting powers will also find themselves unable to restore themselves.) 

Echoes who are already anthropomorphic in nature (or otherwise animalistic) will find themselves with a humanoid form for the duration of the effect.

However, for Echoes who have an Alter Totem from the Tent of Wonders, they will be able to freely shift in and out of this form.

Merchant Town.

The Tent of Wonders

In the middle of the market a mysterious red tent, draped in ornate purple fabrics and lanterns, has appeared. This is run by Maxamillia La Mystica, an eccentric woman who speaks exclusively in rhymes. Upon entering the tent, hanging all along the walls are various wooden carvings of all kinds of creatures and beings. These are called Alter Totems and are made partially from Echo Wood. Curiously, she already has a totem just for you.

Alter Totems

A piece of wood with mysterious symbols carved into it. All echoes may be allowed to receive a totem with or without explicitly venturing into the tent in threads or drabbles, but they may only ever receive one. 

Upon contact, the wood will shift and morph into the likeness of the Echo’s Spirit Creature. Also known as an “Alter”. These can be real, or mythological creatures. Examples of mythological creatures can include dragons, mermaids, centaurs, gorgons, griffons, pegasi, unicorns, phoenixes, sphinxes, banshees, and more!

These may also be animals found in the Aevum Compendium (marked with a plant, fire, or star emoji) or common animals from the echos homeworld.

The Totem itself does not appear to do much in your hands, apart from you feeling yourself drawn to Silverbrook Hollow… 

What each totem manifests into is entirely up to mun discretion.

Each Echo can only have one Alter Totem at any given time.

If the choice of creature changes during the events of the Festival, the Totem will shift accordingly. 

If a mun changes their mind about their Muse’s Alter after the events of the Festival, the Totem may be changed once by visiting the Totem Poles in Silverbrooke. After that change, it cannot be changed again until the next Yestereve Harvest.

Alter Totems cannot be destroyed, traded between, or gifted to other Echoes. If a Totem happens to get lost, it will reappear on the bedside table of Echo’s house.

NOTE: While all Echoes will be given one for the duration of the event, if members wish to keep their muse’s totem beyond the event, they will need to submit a Totem Voucher to the Marketplace (with proof of participation in this festival). Upon voucher submission, the Alter Totem will come with five charges that, in-universe, would last up to ten minutes. The Echo will see the totem’s power diminish by the candlelight in its eye. More charges may be purchased for 100 emblems after the voucher’s submission.

Autumn Flora + Fauna.

Bulb Beetles

Flying bugs whose entire bodies glow a bright, yellow-orange light. They are brighter than fireflies, and will also chirp a little tune during mating season. In the middle of September, they hatch into Bulb Larvae before burrowing underground to morph into their adult forms.

Throughout October, the Bulb Beetles fill the sky, shining their lights while they are looking for mates. Once they find a mate, they will lay their eggs underground. These eggs will remain dormant and incubate until the next autumn. 

Gourm Turkey

An Arcanus variant of turkey sporting brilliant purple feathers that ombre to resemble a sunset. They’re typically temperamental animals and require a very specific environment in order to be raised happily. They are so picky about this, that most farmers do not find it to be a worthwhile endeavor. Wild Gourm Turkeys live in Deep Fanalea and love to cause mischief to passersby. They are fiercely protective of their chicks and will use their sharp claws to attack anything that gets too close. They nest typically under trees, their eggs taking on the same ombre effect as an adult’s feathers.  They are crepuscular in nature, being mostly active during dawn or dusk. 

Yestereve  Mushrooms

During autumn, a slew of mushrooms grow in odd places all across Arcanus Isle. These mushrooms are harvested by the locals for use in cooking. They are edible, but all have strange flavors, and are notably striking in appearance. 

Mushroom species include:

- Bunco: A flat mushroom with a large cap colored in a red-to-orange gradient. It is noted as being incredibly spicy, and has an equally strong aroma. - Cozen: A very long mushroom with a glowing blue cap. It is noted for having a minty/cold flavor. - Gull: A mushroom with multiple small golden heads that almost sound like a bell when touched. They have an intense bitter flavor. - Rook: A mushroom with a sphere shaped, purple. It leaves behind a purple stain if it touches any clothes or fabric. It has a sweet, fruity flavor. - Wile: A mushroom that looks like it has been turned inside out. It is a striking, pure white. It has a very salty taste. 

Arcana Pumpkins

An orange and white striped pumpkin with green colored seeds inside. Some variations may also feature speckles. These pumpkins grow from a white vine that flowers and leaves. They are a favorite ingredient in many fall-themed dishes, having a similar but typically more savory taste than a normal pumpkin. Arcana Pumpkins are native to Arcanus Isle.

They are also a feature in the popular tradition of Pumpkin Carving as they rot significantly slower than normal pumpkins. When a candle is placed inside and lit, legends say that you can hear the voice of a loved one from your past speak to you.

Zebulon is the product of two wandering faeries that found each other and joined a commune.  Born second in his family, he was raised with full blooded siblings and adopted siblings in this unique commune on the outskirts of Opulence.  Throughout his childhood, his parents and the other adults on the compound tried to instill in him the importance of nature, being one with nature, and the shallowness of the material world.  However, since he could remember he always felt different and never grasped these concepts.  Homeschooled until the age of fourteen, he lived a sheltered life and was then thrust into the public education system.  Needless to say, Zebulon struggled at first being the freak child from the compound and people comparing the commune to a dangerous cult. It was in his teen years that he learned his mother actually came from an affluent, strict, traditional family in the fae realm.   Suddenly everything clicked for him, he was never meant for this flower child life.  No, he was destined for greatness.  After graduating high school as valedictorian, Zebulon found it important to go to the fae realm and get to know his grandparents better.  For over a decade, they started to groom him into the proper gentleman that would make the family name proud and pressured him to find a wife that would help achieve these dreams. When Zebulon left the fae realm, he took on his grandfather’s name, in honor of him and to completely change his identity.  The fae went straight into college getting a MBA and finding his future wife that fit the perfect mold of what he needed for success, she came from wealth and opened doors for him.  Only problem, this was a marriage of convenience for him.  Mark had always been attracted to men, although he never told anyone, because the times he grew up in, it was not something that was accepted in the society he wanted to be part of. Over the years, his wife and him became socialites of Opulence often hosting charity events at their home.  They are the proud parents of six children who often test their parents’ patience and on a couple of times had to have their parents’ bail them out and pay people off to cover the story of their misbehavior.  Currently, Mark works for the town council in charge of the town’s funds and how to allocate the money to the different department agencies.  He also works as an advisor to the Duszek Decorous ensuring his family’s legacy as well as co-owning The Vault with his closest friend Rowan. Just one problem with this picture perfect family, there are a lot of things hidden.  Through the duration of his marriage, Mark has had multiple affairs with different men over the years and is currently having another one that he is keeping hidden.

The television series is called ‘Tall Pines.’ It started last week.

In the first episode a small town police force are taken by surprise when they uncover a murdered child at the edge of the woods. They are taken all the more by surprise when a second, identical child is found, also dead, the next day. And another the next.

What begins as a standard police drama about a poor murdered child spins, all too quickly, into something else. Something larger and much more dangerous.

The lead actor is called Dean James. He’s traditionally handsome, though a little younger than normal for this kind of drama, he has his hair slicked back and maintains a charming affability throughout. He plays the role of an FBI agent, with a mysterious past, who enters the town of Tall Pines for the sole purpose of getting to the bottom of this mystery.

He is joined by Charity Dodgson as the proprietor of the inn in which he stays for the duration of the show. By Alexander Lovett as the local police chief. By Grant Snyder as a local businessman. By Robbie Doyle as a fellow patron of the inn. By Jane Coyle, Rose Bridges, David Wayne, and Tom Carter as teenagers caught up in all this mess. And by Lucy Capullo as the voice in his head.

Jennifer Lane was hooked from the first few minutes. She loved the theme music that eery slow guitar that played over the images of the town before anything had even happened.

Then it was time for the camp to open up again.

The autumn season. Less popular than summer, far fewer kids around, but work nonetheless. Jennifer barely managed to convince her co-counselor, Vickie Black, to put the show on. Vickie wanted to watch that live sketch show. The same live sketch show Jennifer’s parents will be watching about now. She doesn’t want to think about her parents.

To convince Vickie to put Tall Pines on Jennifer promised to clean the showers in the morning; work that was supposed to be Vickie’s responsibility. A promise she intends to back out of. She also talked a lot about how attractive David Wayne and Tom Carter are; she hopes she sounded convincing because she doesn’t find them attractive at all. Her sister made a comment during the twenty seconds she was actually in the same room as the rest of the family. That’s the only way Jennifer knows that the two boys could be considered attractive by girls her age.

The music starts.

‘Is this it?’

‘Shh!’ Jennifer lays on her front right in front of the TV, it only has a small screen after all, she pats the rug next to her, ‘come one.’

The police are in a room together. They are talking about the case. It all shot reverse shot pretty simple stuff. But something isn’t right. The camera isn’t pointing to the right place. The characters aren’t centred in the frame. What is centred in the frame? On the wall, something on the wall. It’s a fly.

Vickie yawns. ‘This better be good.’

‘Shh!’

Vickie rolls her eyes.

The camera follows close behind the police as they walk from the conference room down to the holding cells.

‘Found him this morning.’

‘Another one?’

‘An alive one.’

‘Who are these people?’ Vickie whispers.

‘Detective Brooks,’ Jennifer points, ‘and Agent Moore. The others don’t have names.’

Detective Brooks opens the door to the holding cell. The boy inside is identical to bodies from the first episode. Only he is alive. Jennifer says this as quick as she can. Detective Brooks ushers Agent Moore into the room. The two stand, with the door open behind them.

Agent Moore kneels to talk to the boy.

‘Do you know where you are?’

No answer.

‘You’re in Tall Pines, a little ways outside…’

The TV goes static.

‘Shit,’ Jennifer rushes up to hit the side of the TV with the flat of her hand. ‘No.’ She moves the aerial, slowly, until the signal comes back. ‘Stupid. Shit. What did we miss?’

Vickie shrugs.

‘Do you have a name?’

No answer.

‘Is there anyone you’d like to call. Anyone you’d like us to call for you?’

The boy looks up for the first time.

‘You swore?’

‘What?’ Jennifer is trying to pay attention.

‘You did. You said shit. Twice.’

‘So?’

‘Thought you were a good little church girl.’

‘Shut up.’

We cut away to a different scene. Three teenagers, each played by actors in the range of 22 to 27, two boys one girl, are stood behind the school. They are in uniforms. One of the boys is smoking.

‘Eve, Mark, James,’ Jennifer points to each.

James offers his cigarette to Eve, she refuses.

‘They’re bad for you.’

‘No they’re not.’ James takes another puff. ‘You’re such a prude.’

Mark laughs. ‘You guy want to go back to the roadhouse tonight.’

Eve rolls her eyes and groans. ‘My parents found my ID.’

‘Roadhouse never checks.’ James puts out his cigarette. ‘I think the owner wants to get in your pants.’

‘Gross.’ Eve shoves James. ‘He’s like fifty.’

‘Yeah. Probably hasn’t got any in years.’

There’s a voice from behind them. ‘Uhhm, excuse me.’

Vickie turns first. ‘Yeah?’ It’s one of the kids. Vickie thinks his name is Alfie but she is wrong. ‘What is it?’

‘I need to go to the toilet.’

‘Ricky can take you.’

‘Ricky’s asleep.’

‘Uggh.’

‘I’m not going anywhere tonight,’ Leah has entered the scene, ‘not with whatever is out there.’

‘Listen to her.’ James speaks with an arrogance only afforded teenage boys, his 24 year old actor doesn’t quite pull it off, ‘thinks there’s monsters in the woods. ‘Don’t worry Little Red Riding Hood I’ll be your woodsman.’ He gropes at her and Jennifer isn’t quite sure if it’s Leah flinching away from James or Jane Coyle flinching away from David Wayne.

‘C’mon.’

‘What?’ Jennifer is pulled back into the real world. Away from Tall Pines and back to the dingy camp cabin floor on which she is lying.

‘You know the rules,’ says Vickie, ‘two at a time.’

The toilet is a smaller wooden building a few yards away from the cabin. It is almost exactly equal distance between two cabins. In the summer season it serves both. In the autumn season only about half the cabins are in use anyway.

Vickie passes the boy, who’s name the wrongly believes to be Alfie, a roll of toilet roll ‘make sure you use it,’ and shuts the door. She keeps her flash light pointed at the gap in the door. She rocks on her feet as she waits.

‘Are you cold?’ says a shivering Jennifer.

‘Oh yeah.’

‘I’m missing the show.’

‘You’ll live.’

‘What if something important happens?’

‘Do you really think those boys are hot?’

‘What?’

‘I’ve never heard you talk about boys before. Ricky was all over you at initiation last year and you didn’t even say anything.’ Vickie shrugs. ‘I always thought you were a dyke.’

‘I’m not…’

‘Sorry,’ Vickie laughs a little, ‘church girl.’

‘I…’

‘I’m done.’

‘Wash your hands.’ Vickie idly points the flashlight over at the tap sticking out of the ground.

Agent Moore sits down in an armchair. ‘Mr Clark,’ he says, can I talk to your daughter alone for a moment?’

‘Of course. Of course.’ Mr Clark leaves the room.

‘Miss Clark.’

‘Leah.’

‘Leah.’ Agent Moore leans forward. ‘You know you can talk to us. If you need to. If you know anything you can talk to us. You can tell us.’

‘I don’t. I don’t know anything.’

‘What do you think we missed?’ Jennifer takes a blanket that Vickie is offering her, ‘thank you. DO you think she does know something?’

‘Why do you like this show?’

‘I don’t know. Please. I… If I have anything to say I’ll say it.’ The camera is focusing on a fly again. A fly on the wall.

Jennifer realises there is a slight buzzing in the under layers of the background music. ‘It’s doing something different. Something… I don’t know.’

Another scene. We are back at the inn. Charity Dodgson, as Norma Reed, is at the check in desk. She is cleaning. Doing an inventory of the keys. There is a fly on the wall. Norma finds a spare key to Agent Moore’s room she examines it for a while and notices what looks like a speck of blood on the end.

Commercial break.

‘Seriously,’ Vickie groans goes to change the channel, ‘we could be watching, like, anything else.’

‘No. No, I like this.’

‘Fine. But, seriously what is even happening in this show.’

‘I don’t know.’ She watches Vickie roll her eyes again. ‘Okay, okay, I get it, but, I like it, I want to know what’s happening.’

‘Why do they keep showing that fly so much?’

‘I don’t know yet. I want to find out.’ Jennifer stands, ‘please just, let me have this. You can choose what we watch every other night. Just. Please. Just this.’

‘Fine.’

The room has a checker board floor. It is, on all sides, surrounded by unbroken black curtains. There is TV in the middle of the room. A woman is styled as Pierrot and standing next to the TV. She is holding a red balloon.

Agent Moore is standing facing Pierrot.

‘Hello,’ says Pierrot.

‘Hello.’

‘You need to wake up.’ Pierrot lets go of the balloon but it stays in place. ‘You need to remember three things.’ Pierrot puts up three fingers on her now empty hand. ‘Do not trust the woodcutter.’ James’ face flashes on screen so quick it is blinding. ‘The ring must return to the lake.’ Leah takes a bottle of drink from the fridge, she is wearing a silver ring with an inlaid sapphire. ‘There is no Fly.’ The screen goes entirely black.

Norma ascends the stairs of the inn until she finds the room in which Agent Moore has been staying. She reacts to a smell. The sound of buzzing increases on the soundtrack. Norma opens the door and screams.

She keeps screaming as the camera moves slowly through the room. It is a mess, as though a fight has happened here. There is blood on the carpet. A gurgling sound can be heard just below the sound of Norma’s scream.

As the camera reaches the bed, it raises, and turns. On the bed is the body of Agent Moore. He is smiling a big toothy smile from ear to ear. His belly has been cut open. His guts are spilled over the bed.

The credits roll.

You known each club has its own conditions, and here it is, the Serenity Club ver.

I. Terms of Service

1. We only accept one account per–person, and it must be a GEN RP account with a username and display name related to the character.

2. No need to be worry ‘cause we welcome all types of roleplay characters, and it’s best to join us with your main account. However, using a side account is also fine as long as you stay engaged.

3. If you want to join us with a new account, you need to have at least 100 active followers and 500 tweets.

4. We don’t allow twins, unless your character has a genuine twin.

5. You are only allowed to have three open agencies and two squads including us, but fret not ‘cause squad groups are not included in the calculation. However, the number of following you have should not exceed 500.

6. To keep your character’s activities up to date, it’s recommended to repost official accounts or tweet manually. You are not allowed to reposting fan accounts for the convenience of other guests.

7. Make sure you include your year of birth in your biography.

8. Refrain from engaging in discussions or reposting tweets related to real-life issues, and other negative topics. Keep your timeline safe everyday!

9. You are strictly forbidden from creating circles in circles (CIC) or becoming involved in any drama. Please make sure that the other guests and rubies feel at ease with you throughout the Serenity Club’s duration.

10. Please be cautious about posting out-of-character (OOC) content excessively and refrain from sharing Not Safe for Work (NSFW) content before 2 AM and after 3 AM to maintain a respectful environment for the younger members in our club.

II. The Instructions

1. You must be active during the club period.

2. Notify rubies via via direct message if you with to change your character. But if you want to change your character, you can do it two weeks after verification. Please take a note that you are only allowed to change your character once a month.

4. Notify rubies via direct message with a clear reasons, if you are unable to participate in our events or daily missions.

5. Notify rubies via direct message if you encounter any problems, such as account suspension or other issues.

6. Your presence is important, so you must participate in all games, events, and daily missions provided by our club.

8. You can only switch your character temporarily for up to three days, and avoid to using the same face claim as your guest mates.

7. You will receive a warning if you fail to participate in our daily activities twice without informing us.

9. There is no minimum number of tweets required per day, but you must keep interacting with other guests.

10. All requests for permission to be absent from club activities must be approved by rubies.

III. Additional rules

1. To request permission for absences like hiatus or unverification, you must send a direct message with clear reasons and get approval from Rubies.

2. You can take only one hiatus per month.

3. A short hiatus for three days and a long hiatus for five days are permitted. You cannot take a hiatus for more than five days because our time is limited, but if it’s really necessary, you can discuss it first with Rubies.

How to write essays fast

I've been writing a lot of papers, so that's what's on my mind.

So this mostly applies to your standard 5-paragraph paper, though it's fairly straightforward to adapt it to longer (or sometimes shorter) assignments.

One of the main things to note is that essays are VERY formulaic, so knowing the formula and being able to write down your ideas in a way that fit into the formula is probably the number one way to get stuff done fast. Because of that, most of what I’m covering is breaking down the formulas so they’re more accessable.

Also this got very long. If there’s anything you want me to expand on just let me know in the comments or send me an ask/DM and I’ll make another post that goes more in-depth about it.

Structure (I hate this step, so I’ve figured out how to do it very fast becuase it’s still important)

The first thing to consider is prewriting and structure. To start, there are two major paper structures I usually consider. The first goes

This is good if you have a lot to say on the topic, or if it's something closer to a summary essay where there's not really an opposing side. In something where there are distinct sides, (or if you have less to say to support your own side), you may want something that looks like

Why the other side is wrong

Conclusion

The "why the other side is wrong" side is involves thinking through the MOST credible arguments the other side might make, and methodically breaking them down to show how they don't work. The stronger the argument you choose, the more effective this is.

Since I personally hate prewriting with a passion, I usually do this step very fast and end up with an outline that looks like

Intro [insert thesis statement]

P1: [three word summary]

P2: [three word summary]

P3: [three word summary]

Conclusion

(thesis statement, introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion tips are all below the cut)

Usually, this is enough so when I look at my outline, I can see what I'm trying to focus on for each paragraph - and do so without straying from my main point.

For the prewriting, the main things to do are identify with basic structure of the two will serve your purposes better, and write a thesis statement that solidly supports your argument.

Thesis Statement

There are so many guides about creating thesis statements that are powerful, but I'm just going to quickly go over how to be fast about it.

The first thing to know is that a thesis statement is usually a complex sentence: it's your entire essay distilled down to a single line. The general formula I follow goes something like this:

"In their [media type] [name of specific piece], [creator's full name] explored/demonstrated/other verb [theme you're going to be arguing about] demonstrated/using/as evidenced/as shown by [example 1], [example 2], and [optional example 3]."

For example, a thesis statement that follows this format might go

“In his short film Job at Place, David Davidson explored the manifestations of human stupidity through the absurdity of the main character’s home, school, and office.”

Or, if you're writing a historical piece, it might look something like this:

"In [place/time period], [thing you're arguing was happening]: they had to/the conditions were such that/other thing to set up a list [example 1], [example 2], and [example 3]."

For example, a thesis statement that follows this format might go

“During the Tusken Invasion of 32nd century Tatooine, it was the lives of the children that were most affected, from their social development and connections with others to more personal struggles they didn’t yet have the tools to overcome.”

The examples you give are going to correlate to your paragraphs - example 1 is for body paragraph 1, and so on. 

Introduction

I like to think of the introduction as a funnel that gets more and more specific.

First, write a broad statement that touches on whatever theme you’re referencing. 

Job at Place is about human stupidity, so something like “while great minds have flourished throughout the ages, so have the not-so-great.”

Tatooine is about war, and about child development, so something like “children’s development has always been impacted by the state of the world around them.” or “war has many effects, many of which impact those not directly involved with the conflict.”

The idea is that it’s a broad statement that can almost be looked at like a universal truth.

Next, you’re going to go deeper - two sentences that narrow down the time and place you’re talking about specifically, and how that time and place fit into your universal statement. 

The fourth sentence gets even more specific - introducing how the thesis sentence fits into your first three sentences.

Then the last line is your thesis statements. 

Body Paragraphs

Your three main body paragraphs all follow the same formula. (I’ll get to the “why the other side is wrong” paragraph in a minute)

The first sentence you’re going to want is a topic sentence. For this, you’re going to want to look at the example you gave in your thesis statement that corresponds to this paragraph, and see how it relates to your central claim. 

If we’re going with the Job at Place example from above, for the second paragraph, you might open with a line like:

“A striking characteristic of Davidson’s short film was the abnormality of the main character’s school, used to showcase exactly what happens when poor decisions get taken too far.”

Everything within the paragraph will then back up the claim you’re making in the topic sentence (which in turn is backing up your thesis). 

For each paragraph, you’re probably going to want about three pieces of evidence, either in the form of direct quotes (plucking words directly from the source) or paraphrased quotes (summarizing what happened in your own words). The quote should be used to directly support your argument.

After each piece of evidence, you’re going to want about... twoish lines of analysis (this number can change as you need it to, but two lines is something solid to fall back to). 

While analysis can take all kinds of forms, one pattern you can use if you’re stuck is

evidence sentence 

what it means

how that meaning ties back into your main point

Following this pattern, a piece of analysis of Job at Place might look like:

“One of the first images of the private school is that it’s a tall spire with creaking stairs and loose floorboards. Despite this, the principal has eight personal cars parked outside on full display. While the first glimpse of the school might indicate that there is little money to care for the structural integrity, the notion is directly negated by the principal’s actions. By using these two images, Davidson demonstrates what can happen to the youth when those in power let greed carry them away.”

After you write your analysis, include some kind of transition phrase, and go onto the next piece of evidence.

The last line of your paragraph is going to transition into the next paragraph while also summing up the main point of what you talked about in the current one. (This line can also get moved down and tacked onto the beginning of the next paragraph, before the topic sentence, but I have found it tends to look less cohesive that way).

You might choose something like:

“While the school was a disaster in its own right, it wasn’t the only example of human folly.”

If you’re writing a “this is why the other side is wrong” you’re going to want to think about the MOST compelling arguments the other side could make. Take the top one (or two), and figure out ways to crack them apart using evidence from your source material.

In this case, your topic sentence might start off with something like

“While opponents might say [insert compelling counterargument], their reasoning breaks down when one takes into account the evidence.”

At this point, you’re going to follow the same formula as above. The main thing to keep in mind is that for the duration of this paragraph, your point is that the other side’s claim of X is wrong.

Conclusion!

If you know what you’re doing, this is actually the easiest part.

(wait, what??????)

The thing is, you NEVER want to introduce new ideas into your conclusion. Instead, you’re summarizing your main points.

The formula I follow per sentence is:

Thesis statement but reworded (you can change the sentence structure too)

Topic sentence for paragraph 2 or 3, but reworded (I’ll explain why you shouldn’t do the sentence for P1 in just a sec)

Topic sentence for paragraph 1 or 3 but reworded

Topic sentence for paragraph 1 or 2 but reworded

Wow sentence or question (i’ll get to this too)

The idea for the middle three sentences is you don’t want them to read as repetitive, so you’re going to mix up the order so it doesn’t match the order of the rest of the essay. This will help to keep it fresh.

The wow sentence is basically the last impression you get to make. I find it’s usually a good idea to go just a tad dramatic (it sounds dumb, but it has never failed me). If I can’t think of anything, a declarative statement on whatever major theme was being discussed throughout the essay usually does the trick.

Examples:

All of this shows that in the absence of friendships and platonic love, humanity will falter.

Fiction may seem far fetched now, but if the world falls into those same mistakes, it’s only a matter of time until it becomes a reality.

Art has existed for as long as humans have populated the earth; it’s not going away any time soon.

A lesson everyone must understand is the most powerful weapon isn’t anything physical or tangeable: it’s the ideas that exist in the minds of those who care.

(I told you they were going to be dramatic) A way I look at it is if you can’t imagine dropping the mic on the last line, it needs to be stronger (yes I found that plagiarized with not even a whisper of credit on Pinterest, but it works).

If you wrote a SOLID essay, consider ending with a question aimed at the reader (this will push your essay in the direction of either the positive or negative extreme: a strong essay will become stronger, a weak essay will become weaker). Questions can be a call to action or rhetorical as a means to drive home your final point. Becuase they’re more nuanced to the content of the essay, I don’t really have great examples to give you though (sorry).

Hunter: Pretty Woman

this is not the first time that i have publicly declared that i think hunter has a deep rooted connection to the movie pretty woman and it will not be the last

first of all this movie is incredibly soothing to hunters overwhelming savior complex

second of all hunter is literally richard gere (debonaire but emotionally distant gentleman that learns to love) and julia roberts (hooker with a heart of gold) at the same time

he was a little skeptical the first time you put it on but he instantly fell in love with it

the humor, the sensuality, the class divide, the glamour, the unconventional cinderella story of it all. it just really butters his bread

after the first time, when you suggest watching a movie and you pick this one he’ll act very aloof about it (“whatever you want cyar’ika, it doesn’t matter to me”) but secretly he’s really really happy bc it’s one of his favorites (you def know this and def pick it more often)

he absolutely hates the scene when stucky the lawyer hits vivian. like it doesn’t matter how many times he watches it he will fully turn his head away from the screen and say “I don’t like this part” and when it’s over he nuzzles a little closer into you and very tenderly kisses your forehead

he loves the soundtrack too. like he fully exposes how much he likes the movie when you catch him singing or humming “pretty woman” or “it must have been love” absently to himself (you kept it to yourself for a while but eventually you just had to tease him about it. he just smiled a little sheepishly and admitted he liked the songs before promptly changing the subject)

hunter also lowkey definitely wants to recreate the ending where richard gere shows up to her apartment in the white limo with you bc he thinks it’s such a sweet gesture and he wants to treat you like royalty

Crosshair: 10 Things I Hate About You

if there’s one thing about crosshair it’s that he’s a sucker for the enemies to lovers genre

maybe its just him projecting (spoiler alert it most certainly is) but he really enjoys watching the drama conflama of a miserable bastard be tricked into love

and really that’s the true essence of 10 Things I Hate About You

he will grumble and bitch and moan about not wanting to watch a ‘chick flick’ when you put it on, but 15 minutes in and he’s hooked

he has strong negative opinions on literally every single character except for kat and patrick

(crosshair really really wants to think he’s patrick but when it comes down to it he is katarina stratford in every single possible way)

he doesn’t say a word throughout the entire movie but you can tell when he’s annoyed at like bianca or cameron or joey bc he will openly scoff at them

will absolutely hum along in your ear during the “can’t take my eyes off you” scene and make out with you during the paintball scene

(seriously he wants to be patrick verona so bad)

when it’s over and you ask him what he thought he’ll roll his eyes and say “i guess it could have been worse” but his little smirk let’s you know he enjoyed it a lot more than he’s willing to admit

Tech: 50 Shades of Grey

ok hear me out on this one

tech is a huge movie talker. like subtitles are a non-negotiable if you wanna be able to take in any of the movies dialogue bc tech is most likely gonna make commentary over it the whole time

this makes him absolutely indescribably so much fun to watch bad/corny movies with

he will go off about EVERYTHING. the plot, the dialogue, the acting, the costuming, the music, the production quality. nothing and no one is safe. whether you just enjoy letting him talk at you or you join in on the roast, cheesy movies are a hoot between you two

and honey. 50 shades is one of THE cheesiest movies ever

you and tech will literally spend the entire duration of the movie tearing it to shreds

and the thing is tech is a very sarcastic, funny guy when he wants to be (and when it comes to you he definitely wants to be) so by the end of it he will have you in absolute stitches from laughing at the ridiculousness of both the movie and him

with any of the other batchers watching a movie like this either turns into a shy, slightly awkward experience (wrecker, echo) or an incorrigibly horny experience (crosshair, hunter)

but in this context tech literally has no shame or squeamishness about sexual things (why should he it’s a natural biological process?) so to yall the sex stuff is just another thing to roast

literally christian grey could be fully tying dakota johnson down and flogging her and tech will be like “in the last 3 minutes they have panned up to her nipples 4 times. this is criminally shoddy cinematography”

even tho he’s busy giving a detailed play by play critique, he never fails to keep some sort of physical contact with you (wrapping an arm around you and running his hand up and down your skin, playing with your fingers or your hair) so you know he’s enjoying spending this time with you despite his nasty words about the movie

also 1000% after you watch it tech will do extensive research on the ins and outs of bdsm and will have lots of hypotheses he wants to test out (as long as you’re willing and able ofc) ;)))

Wrecker: 13 Going On 30

of all the bad batch members, wrecker is the only one who unabashedly loves any movie that could be considered a chick flick

like he doesn’t even try to hide it or act like he’s too masculine for it. he loves romance and he’s proud of it

this man will have full marathons with you. rom coms, regular roms, tragic roms, hallmark roms, you name it and he’s game

his absolute favorite tho is 13 Going On 30

i feel like he has a huge soft spot for childhood best friends to lovers stories like he finds that type of lifelong partnership so endearing (and he loves to live vicariously through jenna since that type of romance was obviously never an option for him)

wrecker is also very childlike at heart and i think the idea of a 13 year old sweetheart trapped inside the body of a 30 year old cut throat magazine exec is so amusing to him (and maybe makes him feel just a little bit represented in the media)

he is definitely the type to completely engulf you in a cuddle for the entirety of the movie and he DEFINITELY cries into your shoulder at matty’s wedding when jenna is crying on the stoop with her dream house

he wants to try razzles so bad. like so bad. i think if he ever came across them somewhere he would barter at least one of his brothers for them

wrecker really just loves love and watching movies about it just reminds him of how lucky he is to have his own love story with you <3

Echo: The Princess Bride

i feel like it’s glaringly obvious why echo loves this movie

pirates. sword fighting. decades long revenge plots. the value of an honorable, loyal man. true love that never wavers even in the face of devastating tragedy and the darkest of hardships. clever but goofy humor.

echo considers this an action/adventure movie and NOT a romance movie (even tho it 100% totally is a romance movie) and requests to watch it very frequently

he can quote the whole thing. i’m seriously telling you echo loves the princess bride with his whole chest

even tho he refuses to admit it’s a love story above all else, he really does try to model himself in your relationship after wesley

like especially given what happened at the citadel and all the time you thought he was dead, the cinematic parellels are alive and present in y’alls relationship and he strives to be even half the man to you that wesley is to buttercup

literally in your day to day life he will sometimes respond to your requests with a smooth “as you wish ;)” (it doesn’t matter how many times he does it it still gives you butterflies)

when you watch the movie, he snuggles as close to you as possible and does his best to make youre comfy the whole time (he’s insecure about his prosthetics hurting you no matter how much you reassure him they don’t)

he just loves to be able to feel your heartbeat and your laugh when you giggle at the funny bits

every single time without fail at the part when buttercup is about to stab herself he leans down, ghosts his lips against the shell of your ear, and whispers the line in time with wesley: “there’s a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. it would be a pity to damage yours”

every single time without fail you wind up making out until he pulls away and tells you to watch the next part when wesley challenges humperdinck to a duel to the pain

echo just loves you to bits and wants you to know he’d endure a thousand fire swamps for you

Omega: Clueless

i have this really specific obsession with omega being a total girly girl and having very traditionally feminine interests as she keeps experiencing the universe and being exposed to a spectrum of gender expression beyond clone (masc and boring) and kaminoan (ugly)

so with that headcanon of her in mind, it’s vital to me that she sees clueless as soon as possible

clueless is an essential piece of media for a girl entering adolescence and i will die on this hill

it has literally everything you want and everything you need to develop into a well-rounded young woman

it’s so deliciously 90s and glamorama and valley girl humor and camp. its got meaningful female friendships and valuable life lessons and paul mf rudd

if there’s one thing you should encourage a burgeoning hetero teen girl to do, it’s to stick to dating guys like paul rudd in clueless. the earlier this message can be broadcast the better

the second you’re able to steal omega away from hunters watchful eyes (“hunter we’re just gonna watch finding nemo i swear!”) you show her this movie

at this point omega is not really a girly girl, but omega also has absolutely zero feminine influence in her life

the first time she sees clueless she is absolutely obsessed. like seriously she is so enamoured with the glitz and glam of cher horowitz

she asks you questions the entire time. she wants to know about EVERYTHING. the makeup, the clothes, the hair, the slang

(she definitely goes around saying stuff like “i’m totally bugging” for long enough afterwards that almost all of the boys have slipped up at least once with some ridiculous valley girl slang. you thought you were gonna die of laughter when you overheard tech say “as if!” to wrecker in the middle of an argument)

it just really introduces her to this whole world of femininity that she didn’t even know existed and she absolutely loves it

she makes you watch clueless with her seriously once a week at minimum. she begs you to style her hair like tai’s and you can’t help yourself when you happen to run across a little yellow plaid dress and buy it for her on sight

(hunter was gonna scold you for recklessly spending credits until he saw how omega almost cried from how happy she was for the gift)

honestly she enjoys the romance of it all and paul rudd is def her first celebrity crush but she enjoys more that you and her now have this special thing of hair and nails and pretty dresses

she loves how confident and beautiful and special you’re able to make her feel, and you love that you get to bring her that small sense of normalcy and happiness

Synopsis: You accompany Zemo to the Sokovia Memorial. *Hurt/Comfort*

Background: After protecting a child in Latvia, Zemo offers you his services to assist with tending to your wounds. You invite him to stay the night at your home.  This is a follow up to The Right Thing. It can probably be read as a standalone, but it is the same reader/character from that story and picks up the next morning.

TW: mentions of previous character death/death of a child; grief centric; angst with uncertain ending. 

A/N: I know my fluffy Zemo stories are more popular but in my HC, you don’t get Soft!Zemo without putting in the work and helping him through his deep-rooted grief. So it’s important to me to explore this side of him too, as there is no redemption possible without it. My HC is that you can read this reader throughout almost all of the stories. 

The floorboards in your old apartment creak in the quiet of the morning, you strain your ears, listening to your guest's movements. You continue preparing breakfast, hopeful that he might join you, but the footsteps lead away instead of nearer. 

You follow the sound, noting how the area where he had slept had since been tidied. 

"You don't have to leave," you offer with a subtle shrug as you approach the entrance. "Stay...at least for breakfast."

His lips pull at the corners as he nods in contemplation, but you can tell by the strained expression he had already decided to go. "Thank you for the hospitality, but I must depart." 

His hand taps almost subconsciously over one of the inner pockets of his long dark grey coat. Your mind drifts back to the previous night when he had offered the garment to you. You had noticed a small bear tucked inside. You had been curious but hadn't wished to pry. 

"There is something I must do," he stated solemnly.

You nod your understanding. You knew he wouldn't stay; why would he? Nevertheless, something inside of you begged you not to let him go. You watch as he continues toward the door. At the last moment, you take a quick step forward.

"Wait!" You blurt out with more volume than you had intended. "Do you want company?"

"Where I'm going, I don't anticipate having much time left." He turns back toward you. "I have a promise to keep and then—" he pauses, knowing what he has to do, knowing his freedom was only ever a short-term gift, one he would exchange when his work was complete. He continues, "—I have an agreement to honor." 

You look away, trying to school the disappointment on your face until you realize he hadn't entirely said no. You feel a slight rise of hope as you study his features. You sense the heaviness in his heart in his sunken gaze, despite the mischievous smirk toying on his lips. "I could use some air, even if it isn't that long." 

He inhales, considering your offer. Neither of you fully understand the curious feeling growing inside; yet, both of you are reluctant to ignore it and part so soon. He nods thoughtfully. "I've called for the car. It will take us where I need to go."

Your eyes grow inquisitively at his words. You had assumed the place was nearby. But more so, the ease in which he mentions such a luxury takes you by surprise. Not many from your neighborhood could afford such a thing. 

You grab your coat and follow him out into the streets. You pause as you near the black car, questioning for the first time if this is a wise decision. Your thoughts are pulled back as he opens the side door, motioning you inside. 

Your face warms at the gesture. It wasn't often you encountered manners such as his. He was different, and that intrigued you.

He closes the door carefully behind you before walking around and joining you on the other side.

"The memorial, if you please." These are the only words spoken for the duration of the trip. 

You watch your city fade away to the countryside that eventually gave way into a bareness. Despite the years since the battle, the land had yet to recover fully. Some new growth highlighted the landscape, but much was still bleak and lifeless. 

Every now and then, you stole a glance at the man beside you, deep in contemplation. Occasionally, he would record his thoughts in a small notebook that he kept guarded.

As the car arrives at the memorial, you wait, watching for him to take the lead, not really knowing what to expect. 

His hand pauses as he reaches for the door handle. You watch his deliberate movements, almost forcing himself forward. 

The grief drawn on his face pulls your own features down in reply. You wonder for the first time whom he had lost.

He nods to himself as if willing his body to continue and leave the car.

You linger with the intent of giving him a moment. However, to your surprise, he opens your door for you and gestures you out. 

You take in the expansive memorial to the fallen country. A lake to the right had formed as the land resettled. A monument at the center with a serene trickling fountain welcomed you quietly.

But what caught your attention most was the wall of names. The Avengers had saved a lot of people that day, but the list of the dead was longer than you expected. Your stomach drops at the realization as your gaze scans the seemingly endless wall. The news covered the victory and the destruction, but it did little to prepare you for this truth. The cost of human lives should have outweighed any other press, but it didn't. 

You whisper a silent prayer to honor the dead, knowing so many of them may no longer have anyone to remember them. 

He stands beside you, his gaze distant.

"It's beautiful." The words slip from your lips in reverence. The memorial was simple yet powerful. You couldn't help but feel the weight of the loss standing before the massive wall in the distance, but the fountain and the lake helped ground you. "I wonder who designed it."

"I did," he replies, his voice marred with pain. "I may be a man without a country now; but, it is still my duty to care for the ashes of my beloved land and all those who were lost... and those I failed to protect." 

The more he talked, the less you realized you knew about him. He spoke of Sokovia with deep admiration as though he were once a significant member of its ruling body. You wonder how a man who seemingly had so much ended up hiding in the shadows of your city. The sorrow in his expression answered your question. Loss. Loss cuts more deeply than any physical wound ever could.

"It's beautiful," you repeat quietly. You know that no matter what you offer, it will never be enough to satiate his loss.

He doesn't acknowledge your reply; instead, he continues forward, heading toward the end of the list of names.  

You stay near the fountain, giving him space and privacy to mourn. You try to turn away, but you can't help but continue glancing in his direction. You want more than anything to understand him. 

You watch his body grow rigid, the color draining from his face. He leans against the wall for support, his fingers tracing a line of names. He reaches in his pocket and retrieves the small bear. His hands shake as he looks between the toy and the wall. 

You press your fingers to your lips, wondering what memories the token holds for him. You could practically see this man's heart breaking in front of you. 

His knees buckle under the weight of his grief until he crumbles to the ground, clutching the bear tightly in his hands. Despite being hidden by his jacket, you see his body rock as he weeps silently, his suffering too great to bear.

This man who confidently came to your rescue, who despite his mysterious nature had offered an air of self-assuredness in all that he did, was now broken in a way you realize only the loss of a young child could cause.

You move silently behind him, resting a reassuring hand on his shoulder. The two of you might be strangers still but, you knew he needed to know he wasn't alone. 

"I'm sorry," he cries quietly, though you know the words are not meant for you. "I failed you. I should have been there. It should have been me."

He had spent years grieving in silence, throwing himself in his mission to avenge their deaths and later in prison, reading philosophies to justify the actions he had taken. He had never given into the sorrow, not in a meaningful way. It was easier to stay angry and to hate those responsible than to let the weight of his grief suffocate him as it did now. But, he had made them a promise that they would never be forgotten—that no one loss that day would be forgotten. He promised to remember them and then to visit once the memorial was complete. And now, he could keep that promise, even if it meant little compared to the one promise in his life that he had failed to keep—to protect them above all else.

You remain silently at his side, letting him grieve. He didn't recoil under your touch, so you kept your hand on his shoulder, knowing it would do little to quell the sadness of the loss of a child—the ultimate tragedy. 

As his grief quiets and his body relaxes, you give his shoulder a gentle squeeze and retreat, offering him time alone with the family he had lost.

He kisses the crown of the bear's head and rests it against the wall. He remains a while longer in silent vigil. You keep watch from the fountain, admiring how the sun sparkled on the lake, offering a promise of hope for the future amongst the wreckage. 

When he returns to you, his mouth opens in gratitude, but his words fail. He nods simply, and you understand all of the unspoken meaning it held.

"What will you do now?" You question softly. 

"Wait," he replies, sitting stoically beside you.

"How long?" You had already been away almost a day and were curious where this was leading.

"As long as it takes?"

"For what?"

"I made an agreement. As easy as it would be to go on my way and accept this freedom, I must honor the vow I made. What would a man be without his word?"

You don't understand what he means, but you sensed his peace in his decision. "Okay."

His gaze meets yours. "The car will take you anywhere you wish to go."

"What about you?"

"I trust other means of transportation will have been arranged."

You take this as your cue to leave, so you stand, despite your reservations. "Thank you... for your help last night."

"It was my privilege to do the right thing."

"Will I see you again?" The question slips from your lips before you can stop it.

The corner of his mouth twitches up momentarily. He reaches in his pocket, retrieving the black notebook he was writing in earlier. "That is entirely up to you."

You shake your head in confusion as he hands the book to you.

"This is who I was and who I am." His head tilts to the side, reflecting on the time you'd spent together. "It also holds what events I trust will transpire in the coming days and where to find me should you wish to after you've learned the truth."

"I don't understand."

"I know. You will if you read this." He offers a halfhearted smile. "If we don't meet again, I understand, but if we do,  I'll know—" he goes quiet, choosing his words carefully. "I'll know there is more work to be done. That you have seen what I could be, and I'd like that chance."

You stare blankly, wanting to understand but sensing you can't.

"Thank you," he paused, his voice rising, searching for something more.

"Y/N," you whisper. You had both decided the previous night it was best to keep your identities concealed.

"Y/N," he repeats, reaching for your hand. He brushes a kiss on your knuckles. "It's been a pleasure."

Your eyes mist over, even though you're not sure why. You wait, hoping he might return the sentiment with his name, but his lips press together, and his only reply is to gesture toward the book he handed you. 

"Go," he encourages.

You feel yourself walking away even though that's the last thing you want to do. You hold the book—his book—a little closer, not daring to look back. Despite the slight promise in his words that this wasn't the end, you couldn't help but feel like this was an unspoken goodbye. 

A/N2: I started writing after episode 4 when Zemo first mentions the memorial. The original ending wasn’t angsty/uncertain, but I wanted to make it work with canon so I wanted him to decide to stay alone so he could return to prison, keeping the agreement he made to Sam and Bucky in the beginning. There may be a third part in their story... just saying 😉

An imagine for adeuce please! They hang out someplace in their hometown during vacation but awkwardly run into crewel. I think treys family bakery would be a nice location but the setting is your choice in case you want to limit the dialogue and number of characters

Ps. I personally feel like the game needs more interactions between the students and teachers. Hopefully we can get more in the new event

Teacher-student interactions are so much fun! We definitely got more from Vargas Camp (which I’m really thankful for), and I hope we keep getting more!

So far, my favorite teacher-student dynamic has been Vargas and Azul. I’d feel bad for octoboi if I wasn’t laughing so hard at his flying fails--

I really liked this prompt, so I wrote more than my usual ~1000 word imagine; please enjoy!

Imagine this...

The Rose Kingdom was aptly named for the flowers that bloomed in nearly every corner of its land. In the summer time, they blossomed magnificently, perfuming the warm air with their heady aroma—but in the winter, those delicate rosebuds were banished by a spell of frost. Without fail, a great cold would wash over the region every year, casting their famous red flowers in a thick layer of white.

It was a pattern that the kingdom’s residents had long since grown accustomed to. This was, after all, their beloved home—amid the roses, frozen as they were.

“Oi, Deuce! Hurry it up, will you?!” Ace called, tossing an annoyed glance over his shoulder.

His friend—wearing so many layers that he resembled a moving blueberry more than a human—lagged several paces behind.

Deuce attempted to return the sass, but his words caught in the scarf bound tightly around his mouth, coming out muffled instead. The puffball on his winter hat furiously bobbed up and down, as though communicating his frustration for him.

“If we don’t pick up the pace, they’re gonna sell out of hot chocolate and fresh pastries!” Ace rushed back, grabbed Deuce by the arm, and tugged. “C’mon!! I thought you were in Track and Field Club or something—so let’s get moving!”

Deuce loosened his scarf with his free hand and, glaring at Ace, declared, “No way am I running with the roads this icy. That’s a recipe for disaster.”

“Hah? You serious? I already got wasted enough time waiting for you to dress in your 101 layers of coats,” Ace grumped, gesturing to Deuce’s ridiculous outfit. “It can’t hurt to be a little quicker about it.”

“Mom wanted me to stay warm,” Deuce countered stiffly. “I’m gonna respect that, no matter what.”

Ace rolled his eyes and waves dismissively. “Yeah, yeah, whatever—enough talk, we really gotta get going...!! I’ll be damned if I freeze out here.”

“The Clover Bakery isn’t that far from here, so we don’t need to rush.” Deuce indicated a warm building at the end of the block, which gave off delicious fumes—spun sugar, baked bread, and spices. “Slow and steady wins the race.”

Ace groaned loudly. At this rate, it would take all day for them to waddle on over. He was about to bury his head in his hands when an idea dawned on him.

A mean, but clever, idea.

“Betcha I could make it there faster than you,” Ace chirped, his voice casual.

“It’s not a competition,” Deuce reminded him sternly.

“No one said it was, dummy! I’m just saying I could definitely beat you at your own game.”

“Tough words for someone shaking like a leaf in the cold.”

“Oh yeah?” Ace’s grin was wicked. “Prove me wrong, then.”

“I don’’t have to prove anything. It’d be dangerous to run in this weather, anyway.”

“I bet it’s way more snowy in Pyroxene—and Jack’s probably totally fine with running through it!”

“That’s Jack, and this is me. I said I wasn’t going to rush things, and I meant it.”

“Yeah? Too bad~” The redhead gave an exaggerated sigh and a shrug. “Backing out, huh...? Oh well. Guess if you snooze, you lose...!!”

“Hey, I never said...” Deuce’s voice trailed off, for Ace had shoved by him, darting off in the direction of the bakery. “H-Hey...!! Ace...!! ACE!! GET BACK HERE!!”

He tore after his friend, shouting at him all the while—and Ace, with his (cheating) head start, only laughed in return. Deuce soon caught up (no thanks to his club conditioning), and they were neck-and-neck for first place.

Windchill, knives upon their faces. The biting cold seeped into their lungs, making it hurt to breathe as they hurtled toward their destination. Yet they sailed on, determined to outdo the other.

Both boys launched themselves at the bakery entrance, grasping the handle at the same time.

“EXCUSE US!!” Ace and Deuce yelled in unison, yanking open the door (struggling to cram through the doorway at the same time) and stumbling in.

They were greeted by a blast of warmth and the smells of sweet cakes and toasted breads. The employee manning the counter glanced up, startled at the duo’s sudden appearance. When he saw who it was that had barged in, he sighed and calmly readjusted his glasses.

He looked a little different than usual, wearing a white shirt with green plaid that showed off his broad shoulders. The sleeves were rolled up to reveal thick forearms forged from years of lifting flour sacks and kneading dough. A brown apron was slung over his attire, four-leafed clovers sewn on the pockets.

“If it isn’t Ace and Deuce. How are the two troublemakers of Heartslabyul doing?” Trey asked, his smile lopsided as his underclassmen approached.

“A-Are we really troublemakers in your eyes, Clover-senpai?!”

“I’m just kidding,” he reassured Deuce. “Well, you are troublemakers, but more for Riddle than for me.”

“Geez... thanks for the vote of confidence...” Ace grumbled, casting the third year a cheeky look. “Some senpai you are, huh?”

“Now, now... I’m allowed to have some fun, aren’t I? We’re all ‘off-duty’, so to speak.” Trey said light heartedly. “Anyway, what brings you guys to the Clover Bakery? I’m assuming you’re not dropping by just to say hello.”

“Hehe. Obviously we’re hungry, so we came by for some grub!” Ace held up his index finger. “One large hot chocolate, and a plate of assorted butter cookies for me!”

“I’m okay with a small spiced apple cider,” Deuce chimed in, “please and thank you.”

“Gotcha. I’ll get you your drinks in a bit,” Trey nodded, “but as for the butter cookies, I’m afraid I won’t be able to sell those to you.”

“Huh?” Ace’s face collapsed. “Why not?”

“We’ve only got a few dozen left, and they’re reserved for a client that preordered them. Sorry.” Trey pointed to a neatly wrapped box already set upon the counter, done up in a bright green bow.

Through the plastic window in the box, Ace could see that the cookies had been converted into little sandwiches. Each pair housed a generous dollop of cream, caramelized raisins threaded throughout it.

“What? Who needs that many butter cookies? And why are there gross raisins in them--“

The door to the bakery flung open, summoning a gale of cold once more. A bell suspended above jingled, ringing in a new customer.

“Ah, speak of deville the devil,” Trey said—while his underclassmen balked in terror.

There, in the doorway, was a tall man in black faux leather gloves and a voluminous fur coat—striped, black and white. Beneath that, he boasted a crimson turtle neck and a blazer, half solid white, the other half a black , checkerboard pattern. This, paired with his slicked back hair, steely eyes, and regal face, made him appear as though he had just strutted off the runway, were it not for the leashes he gripped.

Two Dalmatians—one in a blue coat, the other in a red one—stood alert by his feet. They caught Ace and Deuce’s eyes and barked in greeting, but the two boys were far too fixated on the Dalmatians’ owner to gush over dogs.

“Crewel...”

“... Sensei?”

Ace and Deuce glanced to one another, then back at their Alchemy teacher.

“C-CREWEL-SENSEI?!”

“Wh-What’re you doing here?!” Ace demanded, pointing an accusatory finger. “School’s out for winter break...!! You... You didn’t hunt us down to make us do our homework, did you?!”

Crewel snorted. “Spare me your theatrics, Trappola. Your instructors are granted a vacation for the duration of winter break as well. Were you not aware?”

“I-I knew that! I just didn’t know you lived in the Rose Kingdom, too!”

“I thought teachers lived at school...”

“... Seriously, Deuce?!”

“The more you know.” Crewel narrowed his eyes at Ace. “But speaking of homework, I trust you pups are keeping on top of your assignments? Being on break is no excuse to slack on your studies.”

“D-Duh! Of course I haven’t been slacking!” A lie, Ace grimaced, thinking to the piles of homework he had abandoned in his bedroom in favor of hanging out with friends. Whatever, he could just pester his brother for help later. “Right, Deuce? Back me up here!”

“I’ve been diligently studying and working on my homework bit by bit every day, Crewel-sensei!”

“... But have you done it accurately?” Crewel asked, raising an eyebrow. “Simply writing down an answer does not guarantee full marks, Spade.”

“... Errrrrr, okay, maybe I need to work on it a little more.”

“You’ve got your notes and a reliable Science Club member to count on for assistance,” Crewel quipped, gesturing to Trey with a gloved hand. “There is no excuse for why you should not do well. That goes for you as well, Trappola.”

“Y-Yessir!”

“Crewel-sensei, I think that’s enough interrogation,” Trey called, waving for him to come to the counter. Outwardly, he wore a smile, but inwardly, he sighed. For the love of the Great Seven, don’t offer my help for me. “Here, I have your order prepared--oh, but be sure to keep your dogs at the doorway. No pets allowed beyond a certain threshold for health and safety reasons.”

“I am aware, yes.” Crewel’s eyes passed over to the two scared stiff underclassmen. “... Trappola, Spade--come here. Do your professor a favor and tend to my Dalmatians for me.”

“What? You want us to watch your dogs?”

“I’ll do my best, Sensei!!”

“Don’t just blindly agree to it, Deuce!”

“It will only be for a moment,” Crewel insisted, shoving his leashes into Ace and Deuce’s hands. The boys fumbled, but held firm--the Dalmatians eagerly staring up at them.

“... Oi, don’t give me those looks,” Ace grumbled. “You’re... You’re too cute looking and innocent to be Crewel-sensei’s pets.”

The dog in the red coat gave a happy bark, as if pleased with the compliment. Its partner, in the blue coat, panted with delight as Deuce gave it a firm head pat.

Crewel received the box of raisin butter cookies--but allowed his eyes to quickly a scan the glass display case as he strode up. “Do you have dog treats in stock as well?”

“We do.”

“Then add two to my total, please--peanut butter flavor.”

“Alright, you’ve got it.” Trey ducked, retrieved a pair of tongs, and fished out two bone-shaped biscuits. He dropped them into a paper bag and handed them over to his teacher. “That’ll be--”

He was cut off by several bills being fanned out on the counter.

“I’ve ordered enough from your bakery to know the general prices,” Crewel smirked, tucking his wallet away into his massive fur coat. “If there is a discrepancy, you may keep the change.”

“Ah, thanks for that. Hope you and the dogs enjoy--” Trey paused, cut off this time by the sound of several small footsteps from the back room of the bakery. He groaned, already knowing what was coming. “Oh no...”

“Trey-nii!!” A chorus of high-pitched voices piped up, startling Ace and Deuce. “We heard bark-barks!! Did Mr. Fluffy Coat bring back his doggies?”

Three heads of green hair poked above the counter--just barely. One girl and two boys, probably elementary school age, all of them sharing Trey’s mustard yellow eyes.

“Guys, not now. Big bro’s busy with the customers,” Trey warned. He passed an apologetic look to his underclassmen and teacher. “Sorry, my siblings are excitable sometimes.”

“I wanna pet the doggies!”

“I wanna feed’m snackies!”

“I wanna dress them up!”

To the boys’ surprise, Crewel merely chuckled. “No worries. Fellow canine lovers are always welcome.”

“Mr. Fluffy Coat!! Can we feed your doggies?”

“Pretty please with candied violets on top!”

“Please, please, please!!”

Crewel barked with laughter. “Perhaps I can allow it, little ones--permitted that your brother grants his permission.”

All three Clover siblings looked expectantly at their eldest sibling.

Trey heaved a sigh. “... I guess I’ve got no choice. Go ahead.”

Excited squeals filled the interior of the bakery. The Clover siblings nearly tripped over themselves racing over to Crewel’s dogs (they nearly trampled Ace and Deuce’s feet, too).

“Hey, watch it! We’re the ones babysitting these dogs, not you!” Ace cried as the kids descended on the Dalmatians. I’ve only had these dogs for five minutes but if anything happened to them, I’d kill everyone here and then--

“We can share, Ace!”

“Spade is correct. There is plenty of the pups to go around,” Crewel interjected. He produced two dog treats and broke them into smaller pieces, offering them to Ace, Deuce, and the Clover siblings. “Go on, then. One for each of you to feed them.”

The Clovers cheered and eagerly claimed their pieces, holding them out and allowing each Dalmatian to sniff and lick the treats straight out of their palms. As soon as the food was slurped up, the Clovers proceeded to vigorously pet the pups. But the first years hesitated.

“You’re... being awfully nice,” Ace noted, eying him suspiciously. “Are you gonna spring a pop quiz on us as soon as I take the treat?”

“Keep biting the hand that feeds you, and I just might consider it,” Crewel warned with a dark smirk.

“W-We’ll take the treats!” Deuce snatched up two pieces, shoving one into Ace’s hands. “Come on, let’s not worry too much. We’re on winter break, after all. Let’s just relax while we still can.”

“You’re right, you’re right! Let’s not sweat it!”

They exchanged a brief laugh before kneeling and offering up their own dog treat pieces to the Dalmatians. Just as the dogs’ sloppy, wet tongues connected with the boys’ hands, their cell phones went off.

“... Huh? Did you just get a text, Deuce?”

“I think I did. I heard your phone ping too, though. Did you get a text too?”

“I can check. One sec...” With his free hand, Ace fished his phone out of his coat pocket and consulted it. He immediately paled. “Oh, shit.”

(“Hey, language!” Trey shouted--but his protest seemingly went ignored.)

“What’s wrong?” Deuce asked, frowning.

“Check your phone. Check it right now.”

“Is it something seri...” Deuce’s face dropped as soon as he looked at his messages. “Fuck.”

(“I said, language!” Trey tried again, only to be snubbed a second time.)

The distressing text they had received?

Ace and Deuce abruptly stood and bolted toward the exit, much to everyone’s surprise. They paid no mind to the concerned shouts of Trey, nor Crewel, or to the excited barks of Dalmatians no longer held by leashes.

All that remained of where the duo once stood were soggy, half-finished peanut butter dog treats.

Can we just talk about the ending of KawoShin open discuss. *sort of spoilerish*

I feel like I’m the only one who’s like reallly disappointed LMFAO--ya’ll there’s so much “canon” alternative universe and merchandise for Kawoshin in Evangelion that it kind of makes me upset to realise this couple just went down the drain. Yeah, I can see how people were like, “Kaworu’s toxic” or “Kaworu has a hero complex for Shinji” to which I say are valid points. But the toxic thing I feel like can also be applied to pretty much everyone around Shinji tbh, except for Rei. I did NOT, like Asuka at all but I really love her character though, and I felt for her a lot throughout the series.

I did not ship them either because honestly, Shinji and Asuka seemed better off playing the sibling dynamic instead of trying to play bf/gf which honestly is kind of forced by their living situation. Also since they’re in a similar disposition non existent father and dead mother, you’d imagine they would rely on each other for emotional comfort. Though Asuka—her personality I feel like she can’t differentiate between familial love and romantic love and the affection she wants is a bit of both. But, her character tries to be “mature”; she wants romantic love more and does this through sexual means and romantic gestures e.g. like kissing. One of my friends told me that you can’t stay friends as a boy and a girl cause eventually you catch feelings. Which I say is kinda dumb cause I have a lot of male friends, and I definitely don’t harbour those feelings, but I guess it’s a common phenomena.

I think this is what happens in this case, of Asuka and Shinji. Even after rejection of instrumentality they actually are depicted as childhood friends. But knowing how they both were before to each other, it was not good tbh. Also to mention the choking like thrice— bro if anything, this showcases a really abusive relationship and I think this outstretches the idea of their character tropes. Which I firmly stand by saying they’re superficial to each other. AsuShin were never really there for each other and are using each other in a forced situation. However, you can’t deny that they didn’t at some point catch feels, also Shinji is pretty consistent how he still cares about everyone around him. Which I really like how they add that to his character because it reminiscent of Yui, because you see a duality of both his parents personality in Shinji throughout the series—it’s a really nice touch. But bruh, if we gonna talk about that coma scene—I’m out LOL.

Thoughhhh, she is a true definition of best girl I really like her arc, fighting drive, and her skills as an Eva pilot 😭💗--but bruh she’s still a toxic and sometimes annoying tsundere trope, but still she’s 14 what can you do. So I feel like Kensuke and Asuka are actually a pretty good combo, cause he’s always been pretty mature even without parents. Also Asuka was into older guys, so I guess this is a win win?? Also Rei and Shinji, I honestly cannot get my head around it cause that’s pretty much his mom—so in a way that’s like either his half-sister or mom-ish clone?? Idk but Yui is definitely the donor LOL.

Kaworu and Shinji I felt like brought a bunch of things out of each other. I don’t know which timeline begins first, but I’d like to think the manga, the anime (plus its movies), and then to the rebuild series. Because I think that order is kind of pivotal to observing Kaworu’s character development from being a person who’s trying to understand human feelings to then the kinder person we see in the final series. You can tell how he’s changed and he knows Shinji a lot more as well as being considerate to him e.g. giving him personal space or letting him work at his own pace. Also that “we’ll meet again.” Is an obvious nod to how he’s done this before.

His literal story in every timeline is always romantic LOL, like bruh I can’t remember which game it was but basically a bad ending of Kawoshin route is that you reject Kaworu and he starts the third impact 🤡. Also I don’t know why but I started to see a weird dynamic between those two, in the manga their interactions reminded me of Asuka and Shinji—which Shinji is the tsundere Asuka here. I don’t know if this is relevant but the older character relative to the character they’re with seems to play off a mature vs a childish person trope. Asuka is younger than Shinji and Shinji is actually younger than Kaworu. Then again I could be overseeing this but istg manga Kaworu and Shinji mirror the whole Asushin dynamic. Like he’s seriously agressive against Kaworu, then after killing him he admits liking him. 🤡 I don’t know which is funnier no homo Shinji, homophobe shinji, or just closet Shinji who needs to realise sexuality is a spectrum so he could’ve idk—come out as bisexual, but whatever manga Shinji lol that timeline is over.

Anyways the development of these two is real and I think the rebuild timeline shows them at their best bringing their own personage out from each other like how they both enjoy music together--WHICH I’M SO SAD WE NEVER GET TO SEE THAT CELLO AGAIN. Then there’s those feelings of humanity, love, kindness, etc. Which yeah an angel could represent those things, but Kaworu is still his own person, self-aware of a cycle and if you think about how he initially was there to USE Shinji, but ultimately turned on that plan set by SEELE because he loved Shinji (and a bunch of other things like him showing Kaworu humanity). I also can see the argument, how “ideal” Kaworu is to Shinji, but he’s more self aware of the time he has before he KNOWS he’ll die and knows how to act for himself in that duration to make the most of it. All with Shinji. At some point, I think he fell in love with Shinji tho I don’t know where it began tbh—considering that all those alternate universes do exist. Kaworu does romantically love Shinji--so, in some universe they both reciprocate their feelings to each other. 

In the last movie during that convo with Shinji. Like bREH it’s so emotionally moving because Kaworu remembers ALLLLL the timelines and how he’s been with Shinji and later Shinji himself recalls the events too. Where they show the scene from the manga and anime. Kaworu cries after being set free from the EVA cycle. Which, I definitely understood what he meant by him saying “it’ll be lonely” and how Shinji changed or that he’s actually different this time.

Either way, Shinji did right by him because it’s always Kaworu who has the purpose of “trying to save Shinji” but it always ends up the same. I thought that was really moving because Shinji tells Kaworu he’s gonna let him live a life for himself for once and he wants the same for everyone as well. Which was honestly so meaningful cause I think Kaworu’s character and like Rei too when they start to realise how to “live” like a person and not another puppet it’s truly liberating. Another thing I forgot, bruh Kaworu calls Gendo his father and ngl I feel like this is kind of a weird lore situation because I for sure don’t think he’s the donor. I think he calls him that as an insult because he knows Gendo’s whole doing and relative to Shinji—I kind of see it as a joke LOL. Like it’s equivalent to saying, “daddy chill”, or “hey look it’s daddy and his plans to end the world” also I kind of like to think of it as a father in law thing cause you know, Kawoshin *winks amirite*

The ending, I’m honestly hoping is just an open ending because it gives everything an actual start of their adult lives not being dictated by extraterrestrial forces. Though, I’m kind of wondering if the world doesn’t have EVAs does that still mean everyone else still has the same backstory, and do they remember? Maybe Mari really is just a coworker lmfao, and there’s still a chance for Kaworu and Shinji cause ngl, they did have a convo (presumably from the spoilers) about still remaining close afterwards and that stare at the ending seems very hopeful.

I call bs from Anno saying, “oh Shinji is based off him and Mari off of his wife”, like honestly any OCs made theres always some part of yourself made into that character. Which is probably why a lot of people relate to the characters in EVA because they’re based off real things (e.g. those war machines characters are named after and people around them). I think why Kaworu and Rei are together at the end, is bc they’re very much the same. They’re mass produced dolls—which oddly enough that’s the case for all the children except they don’t recall the loop. Kind of funny also how both Kaworu and Rei became farmers lmfao so ig it runs in the family (yes that’s right I like the idea that they’re siblings it was always noted that they’re like “the same”).

Another thing, i think why the rebuild really did well for Kawoshin and in my opinion canonised it—the convo with elder Ryoji Kaji (Misato’s baby daddy) that there was a time he felt incredibly lonely and depressed thinking Misato didn’t love him and so he started looking out for himself. So self love and found himself a hobby in farming which he suggests to Kaworu—basically saying he might feel like Shinji doesn’t love him but he’s gotta remember to take care of himself. if I go thru a breakup ill feel like it’s the end of the world but Kaji says y’a gotta self love broe and take care yo self gad dam fam 😭 💗.

Though, that look at the end from Shinji to Kaworu—I’d like to believe there is still hope that one day when they’re a bit stable in their adult lives, they’ll run into each other.

The race between Langa and Joe was very well done. As much as Joe lives to skate, I don’t think he would’ve gone that hard on Langa if it wasn’t about Adam. It’s him wanting to go up against Adam but also wanting to protect the being of Langa.

Langa is clearly not in the zone in the first part of the race. Something is missing. This such a rad beef, yet his usually restless heart is unusually calm. What’s going on? What have I been doing?- But then his hears his name. That voice. Reki. It’s Reki. But Reki said he wouldn’t join the beef. So why is he there? - Right, I’m skateboarding. And the feeling is finally back, his heart is beating again.

Reki is still in doubt about what to do. He knows Langa’s genius, has an enormous amount of faith in him but can’t bring himself to truly feel happy for him. Watching from the sidelines doesn’t cut it for Reki, he wants to be right there, to experience it all with Langa.

Playful banter aside, it’s clear that Cherry and Joe deeply care about each other, and it was really nice to see.

Did anyone else catch that close-up of that Yellow haired guy when Cherry and Adam were preparing to race? I wonder if he’ll come into play later, the close-up definitely seemed intentional.

“I’ll see it for myself what your heart feels.” Cherry wants to know if there are any fragments of the old Adam left. Every day was so fun. Getting to spend time with this great friend, this amazing skater who pulls his friends along and doesn’t leave them in the dust. ( Doesn’t that ring a bell? Adam’s and Langa’s character arcs parallel each other pretty closely)

“It doesn’t matter if you see me. You guys are special.”  Where had it went so wrong? Where had the joyful child who Tadashi taught to skate, the great friend who pulled Cherry and Joe along with himself gone?

“ I know your true self!” He is gone now. Cherry played it so aggressive in my opinion to see how far Adam is willing to go. Not only did Cherry get injured by his old friend, but humiliated as well.

Joe isn’t willing to let Adam go though. Adam is an amazing skater but he is all alone. I feel that Joe regrets not fighting harder for Adam back then, when the two of them were pushed away by him. Friendship and its importance are continuously emphasized throughout the whole duration of the show. We are reminded again and again that to truly feel the joy of skating, you have to share it with someone.

I’m really about to expose myself here huh

anyway, this post is the brainchild of my quarantine. Beginning somewhere around April (what even is time) and ongoing to this day, I’ve written screenplays and fics, made pinterest boards and spotify playlists, dreamed up choreography, and plotted storylines, all as a product of both escapism from this insane world and yearning to be part of my favorite tv show in any capacity.

guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, buckle your seatbelts and allow me to introduce you to “Zoey’s Extraordinary Cousin”, Victoria Evelyn Clarke.

(most of this was written before s2 premiered, and I won’t always be changing her whole story as it would be required on this post, but I’ll continue to add fics which modify stuff to fit s2 canon)

name: Victoria Evelyn Clarke (named after a song-first-and a friend-middle)

height: 5′9″ (plenty of opportunity for the brogrammers to joke about how short Zoey is when compared to her younger cousin)

family: her father is Mitch’s brother, so Maggie and Mitch are her aunt and uncle, making Zoey and David her cousins

occupation: just graduated from a BFA musical theatre program; hired to play piano in the SPRQpoint lobby, stays there for most of the time that her story is shown and eventually books a role in the LA area, which causes her departure from the show (if she’s just a recurring character)

disclaimer: I’m fully aware that a lot of concepts I’ve come up with for her couldn’t actually happen on the show (especially if I played her, which of course is the ultimate dream), but I just wanted to put all of my ideas into one place

because she ends up working at SPRQpoint, Victoria serves as a bridge between Zoey’s work life and family life, making the story more cohesive

due to the blood relation and her empathetic nature, she can tell when people are singing to her. Zoey tells her about the power right away, and she provides insight, taking on a similar role to Mo but with the added bonus of already knowing her family and getting to know her coworkers better. A complication in the powers is always interesting, and it opens the door for many more possibilities

she’ll bring more musical theatre songs to the table and diversify the music genres discussed on the show; it would also be really interesting to have a character that plays an instrument and see how that might factor into heartsongs

she’d strengthen the theme of music bringing empathy through storytelling; through her insight and empathetic nature, she sees qualities in some characters that Zoey and the audience haven’t seen yet

she’s been the “therapist friend” all her life, and a big part of her arc is learning how to take care of herself and realizing that her own emotions are just as valid as those of the people she helps; this gives a contrast to Zoey’s initial awkwardness when it comes to emotions and helping people, and they help each other through everything

the fact that she quickly falls for Leif sends Zoey into a bit of a tailspin; she feels that she has to tell her what else he’s sung, which results in a question about the ethics of the power and privacy. Zoey Clarke: her cousin. After graduation, Victoria visits her family to be there for them after the funeral, and this begins her storyline. The extended Clarke family is tight-knit, and she and Zoey have been really close friends throughout their entire lives. They can read each other well, and the established relationship is really clear in their dialogue and the way that each is one of the few people that the other feels genuinely comfortable around. Partly because Zoey never had a younger sibling, she was always very protective of her younger cousin. This comes into play in a huge way during Victoria’s storyline, beginning with her second heartsong. One of Zoey’s internal conflicts throughout this situation is the decision of how much to share with Tori of what she knows due to earlier heartsongs; she feels it would be an invasion of privacy to tell too much, but she also feels at the start that Tori is being naïve and a bit too trusting and doesn’t want her to get hurt. This struggle deals with both Zoey’s personal relationships and the ethics of the power.

Leif Donnelly: the reason for the aforementioned internal conflict. Victoria falls hard and fast for him during her first tour of the fourth floor, leading to her second heartsong. When confronted by a dumbfounded Zoey about it, she denies it as nothing more than infatuation at first sight, but this gets harder to believe as time goes on and Zoey has to watch her cousin and sworn rival genuinely becoming friends. After a few weeks, she learns and has to accept that Victoria’s feelings are genuine. Reciprocation, though, is a whole different matter; they find this out by way of another heartsong, which is also how Victoria learns of her own addition to the power. Witnessing that song pushes Zoey over the edge, and similarly to s1e5, she eventually blurts out the truth about Leif’s previous heartsongs and relationship with Joan, which leads to Victoria’s very conflicted heartsong rendition of “Toxic” (because if no one sings it to him at some point in the series, that’s a seriously missed opportunity). We see their later conversation: Victoria isn’t sure how to bring it up, but she doesn’t have to, because the events of the end of s1 obviously did take a big toll on Leif and he wants to be honest with her about it (see chapter 7 of singin’ from a streetlight). It would be interesting if she had something to do with the way he eventually found out about the power; Victoria lives very much by her moral compass, and she would feel awful about knowing things that he doesn’t know that she knows. If I had to sum up the relationship in terms of how it serves the show, Victoria sees the parts of Leif that Zoey and the audience (for most of the season) don’t, and he’s one of the first people who’s ever made her feel wanted.

Mo Montgomery: these two get along splendidly. So splendidly, in fact, that Zoey sometimes even regrets introducing them, especially when she can’t sleep due to their late-night, belt-to-the-rafters karaoke sessions that can be heard through the apartment walls. Mo finally has someone in the building (Victoria is staying with Zoey through the duration of her arc on the show) who properly appreciates music, and the three of them (plus Max and whoever else learns about the power-Simon absolutely has to in season 2, come on) become a sort of ragtag let’s-figure-out-this-crazy-power group of friends.

David Clarke: I’ve always thought that the backstory revealed in ep 5 of David being a former theatre kid was really interesting. He and Victoria have bonded over this for a long time, and she feels betrayed when he leaves it behind due to the toxic masculinity explored in ep 5. I’d love an ep called “Zoey’s Extraordinary Brother” or something that goes deeper into that; Victoria definitely has a hand in helping David embrace that part of himself, and she’s almost as close with him as she is with Zoey.

Max Richman: she’s actually known him for quite a while, having done a bit of community theatre with him before he even met Zoey (because you cannot tell me that this man, who can canonically sing and dance and genuinely enjoys it, wasn’t one of the only boys in his high school theatre program and didn’t ever play Georg Novak at some point). He seemed to have gone through some Good Old Fashioned Character Development in ep 12, what with the “focus on yourself right now” and everything, but there’s still quite a lot to unpack that was revealed between 7 and 11. Honestly, I just want to see someone Talk Some Freakin Sense Into Him, and an old friend who’s been removed from the situation but knows both him and Zoey very well is a pretty good bet.

Simon Haynes: Victoria, along with Mo, acts as Zoey’s confidant for the central love triangle. She’s a bit put off by the idea of Simon’s cheating, but sympathizes with both him and Jessica after learning the whole story; upon meeting him, she thinks he’s wonderful. (he honestly gets some of my favorite dialogue on the show...who else can pull off all of those deep conversations along with “this is a classy affair, of course there’ll be pigs in a blanket”? in this house we appreciate JCS)

Tobin Batra: the first person she meets on her first tour of SPRQpoint, much to Zoey’s dismay. As the audience learns more about him (which I’m so freakin excited for, by the way), he and Victoria share quite a bit of banter while the season goes on. Tobin also thoroughly enjoys trying to push Leif and Victoria together, and there are a lot of fun scenes in which he has a blast acting as a wingman for his oldest and newest friends.

Mitch and Maggie Clarke: they mean absolutely everything to her. Victoria’s parents are usually supportive, but they often consider her career as an entity separate from her as a person and discuss it as if the decisions are up to them; she was always able to come to her aunt and uncle when she needed to, and she’ll always be grateful to them for it. As  previously mentioned, the extended Clarkes are really close, and Victoria deeply regrets not being able to make it to Mitch’s funeral. At the start of her arc, she believes that she doesn’t have as much right to grieve and that she has to “stay strong” for her family. Over the course of her storyline, she realizes that there are people that are there for her just as much as she’s there for them. This includes Leif, Zoey, and Mo; Maggie is one of the most important of these for her. Family is at the core of this show, and at the core of Victoria’s being.

Emily Kang: first of all, I’m still hoping she gets “Everything Changes” from Waitress in season 2. Victoria admires her wit and they enjoy each other’s company; when needed, she loves babysitting her second cousin.

Abigail: give her a last name gosh darnit. I hope she comes back as an intern in season 2; she and Tori would be SUCH good friends, and it might be neat if they had a duet of sorts, so that she’d be signing with the strings carrying on her part as Tori sang.

Aiden:  okay, I knew from the beginning they’d be best friends oh my god. She’s closer in age to him than she is to Zoey; she was often babysat by her cousins when she was little, and that’s how she got to know the kid next door, the kid who air-guitared along to the radio and made plans with her to travel the world when they got older. Naturally, she had the biggest crush on him, which Zoey thought was hilarious. They still support each other’s music and keep in touch to this day.

I’m not sure what’s going to happen in season 2 with new characters, etc, and whether characters such as Joan, Autumn, Howie, Eddie, Deb, Ava, Jessica, etc are coming back. My ideas for this character and her relationships will obviously change as the show progresses (I say as if anything will happen-it’s one of the only things I have left to hope for, okay, voice in my head, shut up) and I’m looking forward to seeing how the story continues to unfold.

some potential heartsongs

“Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from The Phantom of the Opera: the first that the audience sees of her. After an episode of Zoey Going Through Some Stuff, she needs to talk to her dad, and realizes once she reaches the cemetery that she’s not the only one. It’s raining, much as it was when they tried to choose his plot. It’s just the beginning of the song; on “all that you dreamed I could”, Victoria’s voice cracks-she’s crying as she’s singing-and she trails off, then the instrumental continues while they talk. I mean, we’ve already had a song from an ALW musical...IT COULD WORK.

“Absolutely Smitten” by Dodie: after her first tour of the fourth floor, to an oblivious Leif. I’ve always wondered why they haven’t used the swings in the choreography yet, so I just decided to do it because Why Not. The vibes of this song would be perfect for the vibes of SPRQpoint, and it works for the scene as well; it’s vulnerable enough to be the beginning of real feelings, but cutesy enough for her to deny it to Zoey as nothing more than infatuation. If we can put the railing on the staircase back in from the pilot, it fits pretty well as a sliding-down-the-railing song, if that makes sense.

“Human” by Christina Perri: a visit to her parents. enough said. It serves as a major release for Victoria as well as the reveal that she’s far from the put-together person that she tries to be; I also feel like this kind of song would fit well into the show, and it’s more recognizable to the mainstream than most of the other songs on this list. This is also a wake-up call to Zoey that her cousin really is hurting, and the “help” that prevents the song from haunting her comes from the fact that she’s the first person to really understand Victoria’s relationship with her parents and be there for her.

“Strawberry Blond” by Mitski: the epitome of Yearning™. A few weeks have passed since “Absolutely Smitten”, and as much as Zoey would like to stay in denial about her cousin’s feelings, the universe isn’t going to let her; “I love everybody because I love you” is pretty difficult to twist out of context. This one is short and sweet, starting at the second verse and skipping to the repeated chorus. The choreo epitomizes the paradox of combined awkwardness and grace that lies at the heart of Tori’s character. She floats and spins, propelling herself around the office as if lifted from within by the music, never taking her eyes away from Leif. This is when Zoey realizes that she actually has to deal with it, prompting the swear guitar title card; this song and the next two are all part of the same episode.

“Victoria” by Jukebox the Ghost: this song is Leif’s; she accompanies it. Zoey comes downstairs to the lobby a few hours after the workday ends and hears the piano, but there’s no one playing it. It would be really interesting to see the way that instrumentals happen in heartsongs if there are actually instruments in the room; just something fun to play with in regards to the power. (yes, I named her after this song specifically for the purpose of this song, and I’m aware that if the full song is taken into its own context it doesn’t portray a particularly healthy relationship but the piano part is cool and the song just has this electric energy okay?!?!?!) The choreography is very La-La-Land-esque; it’s sweeping and explosive as they make their way across the lobby. At the second verse, she starts actually playing the piano; this cut of the song goes to the last chorus after the second verse. This is also another example of Tori’s being able to tell when she’s being sung to (the way that she finds this out is explained in jumpstarted (see below), but that wouldn’t work in this universe, so this song is how she finds out if she were actually a character). She’s in utterly joyful disbelief, going in between trading incredulous glances with Zoey and allowing herself to fall into the choreography. This song is the turning point for Zoey when it comes to the relationship she’s witnessing; while they’re on the piano bench, Leif smiles at Victoria in a similar way to the end of episode 7, and this sends Zoey’s protective-older-cousin-mode into overdrive. Feelings are one thing, but reciprocation is quite another, and this is when Zoey realizes that she has no choice but to tell Victoria the truth.

“In Case You Don’t Live Forever” by Ben Platt: let’s say that at the beginning of this episode, there was a dream that Zoey had about an old memory with Mitch in which she watches her younger self heartsing this to him, and she’s attempted for all of that time in between to remember the melody. A few days after “Victoria” takes place, Zoey is struggling to figure out how to bring up the needed conversation, and she tries to preface it by explaining how much Victoria means to her. She doesn’t get very far in her speech before she hears the music she heard in her dream; this song is Tori revealing how much she’s always looked up to Zoey, which brings her to tears and causes her to blurt out the last line of the episode: “I need to tell you something.”

“Toxic” by Britney Spears: tbh, this song once came on the radio and I thought “...wait a minute”. It’ll also be more recognizable compared to this list of showtunes and indie pop. This song takes place on the fourth floor during the next episode; Mo has come to pick up the cousins for their weekly lunch, and he and Tori are once again trying to give Zoey a crash course on musical pop culture. Today’s lesson is pop of the early 2000s, and Tori tries to give a demonstration by singing the first verse, almost unable to due to how hard the three of them are laughing. They walk past the conference room where a meeting is taking place, Leif sitting at the head of the table, and Zoey barely notices the instrumentals that have been building in the background until Tori stops short and the all-too-familiar riff (yknow, the daaaaada dadada) comes operatically from her throat rather than the invisible synth. Mo can tell by Zoey’s expression that the demonstration, which has stopped in the real world, has turned into a heartsong. As she sings, she makes her way into and around the conference room, spinning chairs and overdramatically throwing herself against walls, as if magnetically drawn to the subject of the song but trying to pull herself away. It’ll show how conflicted she is, but it’ll also be freakin’ hilarious.

“Unusual Way” from Nine: After the aforementioned much-needed conversation in the episode which “Toxic” appears in, Leiftoria (is that an unintentionally awesome ship name or what) is official. I’m not sure how long her story on the show would last, but this song marks the end of it; she books a role at a fantastic dinner theater in the Los Angeles area. In the scene of her last heartsong, Tori, Zoey, and Leif are sitting in an airport lobby. The ticket machines are down, and dozens of impatient passengers are waiting with them, listening to the drone of announcements and tinny pop music played over the loudspeakers that slowly morph into a melancholy arpeggio. If anyone reading this hasn’t listened to this piece, I highly recommend it, by the way-it’s utterly haunting and you’re definitely gonna cry. The cut starts at the second verse and skips the solo third verse to go right into the duet. There’s nothing extravagant about it; as in the musical itself, this song is carried by the sweeping, raw emotion behind it.

singin’ from a streetlight: a collection of oneshots that goes through most of the potential heartsongs listed above, from Zoey’s pov. chapter 7 is an interlude, back in Tori’s pov, because Zoey doesn’t see her and Leif’s much-needed conversation on the evening of “Toxic”.

but i’ve never been quite alright: I thought of “Human” as a potential song for her after the entirety of “singin’ from a streetlight” had been published, so this is a seperate fic to explain that scene; it fits in both of the above universes.

scaffolding and christmas lights: cheesy fluffy office party holiday fic because why not. It’s fun to consider how other glitches in the power might manifest; in this one, anyone that Zoey makes eye contact with sings their heartsong to the world. this doesn’t really go with the timeline of either universe, but it’s an interesting idea that might be worked into either

with a little motivation, i’ll go far: she experiences her first heartsong, “California” by Ricky Montgomery, at the airport as she comes into San Francisco. I just this song fits her well at the beginning of her story-this was a really fun one.

it’s the terror of knowing what this world is about: taking the little bit of David’s canon backstory and RUNNING with it. he and Tori would have bonded so much over musical theatre when they were younger, and she must have felt so betrayed when he tried to abandon that part of himself; this fic explores that

I would give anything to be part of this show in literally any capacity; from the beginning I loved the concept and by now, as cheesy as it sounds, it feels as if it’s almost knit to my soul. the entire cast, crew, and creative team are such wonderful people (at least from my limited view, but they seem to be very genuine) that I’d love to work with, and this idea has been a sort of a coping mechanism through everything going on in the world and in my life. This post will probably be updated as I come up with more content and the show develops during s2 and beyond. even if nothing comes of this, I love my Tori dearly, and I hope anyone reading this enjoyed learning about her as much as I’m enjoying creating her story.
