Welcome to Cryogenic Hopetown!

-The theme of this area is ‘hospital’. The sick and injured of Alterna came to this place for medical care-- in the worst cases, their bodies were frozen, in the hope that they might be revived in the future. A future that, ultimately, never came…

-There are lots of medical tools lying around: you can give Smallfry a checkup if you like. ^^ You don’t know much about Salmonid physiology, but he seems to be in good health.

-The outpatient garden is a great place to relax. It seems other animals have started living in Alterna too~

-In the hospital itself, you can find a biometric monitor to put on, and through it gain access to your ‘Wellness File’: a physiological/emotional observation record maintained by O.R.C.A. It will allow you to view Agent 3’s reactions to certain events and features of the environment– explore and interact with as much of Alterna as you can to fill the file~.

-In a lower collapsed floor of the hospital, you can still find some occupied cryogenic tanks. According to O.R.C.A., these people cannot be revived– energy imbalances as Alterna was destroyed disrupted their storage conditions, and at this point they have essentially been mummified. Still, the idea of waking them up and talking to them is interesting to think about.

-Wellness File ###: Elevated heart rate, elevated adrenaline levels detected Neurological signals indicate recognition and attention. Patient ‘Agent 3’ may be excited, surprised, or mildly disturbed.

-The hospital lobby contains a ‘crystal mirror’ that shows you your desires: happy scenes with trusted friends, playing on repeat. It’s a little embarrassing to watch, so you try not to hang around it.

-Wellness File ###: Muscle tension detected Neurological signals indicate evaluation and memory access. Patient ‘Agent 3’ may be ashamed, conflicted, or yearning.

Ask the Agents

I want to introduce Tumblr to my agents (officially because I have made posts featuring them all already). My intention was to do this via the Askbox but because I’m new and still don’t 100% know how to work Tumblr yet, I have no idea if the Askbox is even set up so you can just leave a comment and I’ll reply to it. You can ask me about my agents or you can ask the agents themselves a question. The agents are:

Bear (he/him) is the Smallfry but you’re probably not going to get too much information on him unfortunately. I haven’t actually worked out when the agents meet him and who meets him first. Hunter and Stitches love him though.

August/Auggie considers Maisie to be her sister, they come from the same hometown. After Splatoon 2’s story mode, Maisie lived with Auggie for a bit to make sure she wasn’t still hijacked. She’s got a kind heart and a rough exterior, and she’s incredibly cautious around new people, letting other agents speak for her until she’s sure enough to talk to them. She has a limping gait due to past injury but she’s still very physically strong.

Quin took a long time to adjust to Inkopolis after octo expansion and over the course of that she got quite comfortable around Maisie to the point that when she moved back home, Quin followed her. So now they’re roommates!! Yay!!

Rika got fuzzified after running into the fuzzy ooze in Alterna one too many times (she never learns), and August is perpetually on babysitting duty. Rika will chase after any object thrown in her line of sight and Aug uses this tactic to get a moment of peace by throwing smallfry as far as she can to distract the other agent.

Maisie is essentially treated like August’s little sister and she acts the part. Likes sending her annoying texts (or rather, sending them to Agents 1 and 2 and telling them to pass the message onto August who doesn’t have a phone.) She’s very loud and extroverted, the perfect balance to Quin’s introvert.

What are the side effects of Ivy’s partial internal fuzzification? And how does Ivy feel about them?

The partial internal fuzzification is really complex with a lot of side effects, so I'll go down the list in no particular order.

Altered internal organs.

This one's the most intuitive. After she gets clawed, a lot of her organs change to resemble mammalian organs.

Thankfully, she seemed to dodge this majorly affecting her ink production.

This means that only one of her hearts is used to transport blood throughout her body, and that she starts producing body heat. Due to the hearts meant to allow her gills not functioning, she can no longer breathe in ink.

It also means that she bleeds red blood instead of blue blood, which is the typical blood color for cephalopods.

2. Fur patches.

This is a more minor side effect, but she now has fur growing where she was clawed by Mr. Grizz.

Depending on where they are, minor scratches and cuts unrelated to the fuzzy ooze can also start to grow fur.

3. Increased vulnerability to the fuzzy ooze.

Now THIS is the interesting one.

Due to the ooze already having started the fuzzification process, it can be more easily progressed.

This means that touching the fuzzy ooze at this point would completely fuzzify her, unlike beforehand where it would simply cover her in fur.

What's even worse is that touching the little "blobs" of fuzzy ooze that smallfry eats in order to clear the rest away would not only completely fuzzify her, but also cause her to sort of become a "host" for the ooze. This has more to do with my headcanons on fuzzification, so I'll probably talk more about those in a separate post. (I'll give a hint: it's simmilar to how Mr. Grizz interacts with the ooze.)

A more unexpected side effect that would fit under this category would be that exposure to a fuzzy octarian's ink would progress the fuzzification progress.

“Well here we are! Octavio’s already seen the place but I know you haven’t yet Y/N!” , Craig prattles on presenting the treehouse to the duo, Y/N looks up at it intrigued and Craig starts climbing up.

“Yea the dork lives here apparently”, Octavio says, moving next to the ladder waiting for Y/N to start climbing themselves, helping them up into the treehouse despite his earlier annoyance at their disobedience.

“Wow really? What’s that like? I hardly know what living outside the palace is like since I grew up there, my folks are smiths for the palace.” ,Y/N states with excitement as they climb up, Craig waiting at the top and holding out a hand for them to grab and help them up the last couple rungs, Octavio following soon after scoffing, a look of jealousy briefly flashing across his face.

“It ain’t much but I guess it’s nice to wake up to the cool morning breeze and see the sunrise from up here.” Craig sits on the edge of the deck and points towards the town and shoreline in the distance. Y/N sits nearby motioning for Octavio to join them, who when Y/N turns their attention from him picks them up and sits down with them in his lap much to their protests, Craig laughing next to them though with a bit of a worried look going unnoticed by the duo. “So Craig what’d we get from the competition?” Octavio bluntly asks startling Craig who starts to dig into his pockets. “Nothing big unfortunately but we did get some participation tokens!” He says with an awkward smile handing Octavio his token.

“The loser's token, huh?” Octavio says unimpressed.

“I thought we did surprisingly well!”, Craig responds from his spot prompting Octavio to boredly say, “Yeah, for a back-alley hack job of the Calamari Incantation!” Craig awkwardly chuckling, “Ah, l-let’s not dwell on that too much, take a moment to enjoy the view!” He motions out at the view.

Octavio looks to the side knocking on the wall a bit, “I gotta admit I’m surprised an airhead like you build a treehouse this stable.” This statement making Y/N lightly smack his shoulder with a quiet comment of “that’s rude!”

“WELL… The first time I tried, the floor broke apart.

“WHAT?!” Octavio exclaims looking at the inkling in shock and horror.

“After that mess, I went to the docks and asked a nice mechanic to help me.” Craig assures the prince.

“Ok, but? Why didja wanna live up in a tree anyway!?” Octavio questioned Craig settling back down.

“Because I overheard some locals talk about how much trouble they have with the smallfry waves in the spring.” He pauses to take a breath looking out over the lights of the town before continuing with pride, “I plan on staying one year, and up here, nothing escapes the razor sharp gaze of capt’n Craig Cuttlefish! I wanna do good with my short time on Mount Nantai by warning the folks of fishy activity~”

“BLEGH, I didn’t think you were such a goody-two-shoes” Octavio feigns disgust smirking as the mood lightens back up. Y/N lightly laughing before yawning a bit, which both the boys take notice of.

“Whatever. I'm glad you're staying a full year. That means we can crush the competition for real next time the festival rolls around.” Octavio states moving Y/N to lean up against his chest as they start drifting off slightly.

“Wait, really? You want -You want to keep the band going?” Craig says surprised, confused Octavio looks at him saying, “UUH, yeah? Why wouldn't I?”

“I thought you were mad about tonight! And you're ROYALTY! I bet there's important

stuff you-“, Craig starts rubbing the back of his neck.

“ARE YA KIDDING МЕ?! They gave FIRST PLACE to a buncha PREPPY school band geeks! We gotta take back what's ours!!” Octavio states fired up from frustration accidentally waking Y/N back up. “Ah sorry Y/N, didn’t mean to wake ya…”

“It’s ok, I probably should head on ahead back to the palace anyway, I need to get some sleep still if I’m gonna be able to function tomorrow for my duties as the gardener.” Y/N carefully standing up from Octavio’s lap who pouts a bit in response.

“Well let me at least help ya down the ladder so you don’t get hurt on the way down. Talk to ya again soon though! I’m sure tavi will join you soon enough once we finish up with our conversation.” Craig stands up helping lift the hatch and lower Y/n onto the ladder, a pang of jealousy hitting Octavio again but restraining himself as to not weird out Craig with his more possessive tendencies. Once the hatch lowers once more Craig returns to the deck and sits back down.

“Alright Tav what’s going on? I didn’t want to bring it up while they were around but I noticed y'all had some tension between y'all earlier… Everything alright between you two?” the inkling asks shocking octavio that someone like him would notice something was up.

“Everything is fine.”, Octavio scoffs, brushing him off and avoiding the question.

“I may be an airhead but even I can tell that’s bullsquid.” Craig responds with a deadpan look on his face, “come on I’m your buddy you can tell me. I know I saw you two hanging back earlier and saw the concerned look on Y/n’s face when you whispered something to them.”

“Like I said it's none of your business, let's just focus on crushing the competition next year before you go ya slimy hipster!” Octavio snaps back annoyed at the cuttlefish’s persistence to butt in on his business. Even if he had every reason to be concerned. He did let his anger get the better of him earlier and got jealous over nothing.

“Riiiiiight, well, It was a fun night otherwise, even if we didn’t win.” Craig states eventually dropping the topic in favor of talking about the two’s band again.

“Yea, the way all those people just…listened. The way they moved to the beat.” Octavio calmed down, reminiscing the competition earlier, the crowd’s faces as they played.

“Heh, the thrall of the moment is nice and all, but it’s what happens AFTER that matters.”, Craig says, holding up a finger and grinning his signature goofy grin. Confused Octavio side eyed the inkling asking, “What’s that s’pose to mean?”

Craig looks out over the mountain, the late night breeze blowing past the pair, he smiles and says, “A great song is one you remember. After the shows over, and there’s nothing to see~ The melody etches your soul and sets you free~” Octavio scoffs at this and smacks Craig's shoulder with a smirk Laughing, “PFFT! Ya sound like my kooky philosophy teacher!”

“Its true though!”Craig laughs with him, making Octavio respond, “Sure, sure, ya slimy hipster!”, he pauses before getting a giant smirk smacking his fist into his other hand he says with excitement, “Oooh, and next time we'll have a cool catchphrase like: Time ta drop beats till

ya DROP DEAD!”

Craig gives Octavio a sly grin responding with a hand on his chin, “Okay well, maybe avoid THREATENING the audience.”

The prince rolls his eyes at this saying, “C'mon. Don't throw shade at an idea just cuz it's trying something new.” At this Craig soon says deep in thought, “Huh. 'Trying something new. Out of the…”

“Try something new.... We're....” Octavio joins him in thought, but soon the two get an idea saying together, “Try something new… We're here Out of the Blue!” Both men grin at the sound of their new catchphrase, it rolling so smoothly and easily off both of their tongues. Watching the horizon the two sit in silence, the only sound being the crickets and the faint buzzing from the small zapfish nearby. Both once more deep in thought, only breaking out of their individual trances when they start to see the faintest light peek over the water.

Groaning Octavio stands up stretching, “Ah shit I gotta get back before the retainers realize I’ve snuck out or think I was octonapped.”

Also standing up Craig responds, “I’ll walk you back, I know the best route to sneak back in.” The duo climb back down to the ground, they talk as they return to the palace. “Todays gonna be rough since we were up all night, hopefully they advisors don’t notice the exhaustion.” Octavio sighs.

“Well if they do you can always just say you didn’t sleep good” Craig suggested.

“True, I’m definitely telling Y/N to take the day off cause they were up late too.” The prince says half heartedly, exhaustion clear in his voice. Eventually the duo reach the wall bordering the garden.

“Well you get some sleep Tav, wouldn’t want you passing out at any point today!” Craig says as Octavio climbs up, turning to look at the inkling ���yea you too, don’t want you falling from your tree house because you’re too delirious to see straight.” He responds with a smirk before dropping back down into the garden. Creeping back into his room he changes into his sleep wear, hiding his disguise in a decorative chest. Turning to go to his bed he notices a small package on his table with a note. “I found something for you when I was out, I wasn’t able to give it to you earlier. Hope you like it, love Y/N”

He smiles a bit at the note before picking up the parcel, opening it and seeing a new octobrush maintenance kit, the comb in his last one had broken and had been using his fingers to clean out the brush for a bit, often forgetting to request a new one, the wax had also gone bad due to his past kit being of a bit lower quality, a servant who’d since been fired for cutting corners in their duties had not grabbed the correct one when given instructions to pick up a new kit, they’d tried to pocket the extra coin from their attempt to once more shirk their job. This one however he could see was much higher quality, a sturdy comb laid in the small box with a new stick of wax, stamped with the maker’s signature, as well as an application brush for the wax and a new cloth for finishing the process. There also was a small jar of conditioner for the bristles of the brush as well. He smiled at the thoughtful gesture, his prior anger completely fading and becoming a bit embarrassed at how he behaved towards them, especially when he’d seen Craig helping them up into the treehouse. “Shit, now I feel bad snapping at them like that, looks like I owe them an apology, I should return the favor and find something nice for them as well next time I get out to town with Craig.” Yawning he closes the wooden box and sets it down, turning in for the night, his kind set on making it up to his partner in the morning.

Now you listen to me SolarSparky. I am talking directly into your ear now. You will give us the Cricket lore of I am throwing you to the salmonids at Um’ami Ruins.

I shake your hand and give you the lore/rambling ideas for the Cricket So Cricket was raised by Salmonids, I think how I'm going to get it involved with them is they wander a little too close to a school (I'm just gonna call a settlement of salmonids that) of them (it's far off, Grizzco does not know about them/doesn't send workers to that specific location.). I don't know how Cricket ends up there, maybe they are just a wanderer, maybe their egg was left in the area and they just kinda frolic and live around there.

They do observe salmonids going in and out from a far at first, but realize they may be able to take them in. But before they can just show themselves, a smallfry comes around and seems interested in Cricket. This is Soggy Seaweed aka Soap. It comes around and gets called away but enough meets happen and Cricket is able to take on a salmonid form (either a Chum or Smallfry I'm having a hard time deciding.) So Soap takes Cricket in disguise and shows them to his mom, she just thinks Cricket is from another salmonid group but honestly the school doesn't mind so they are allowed to join.

They are most definitely given a job, they can't do front line field work/battling obviously, I think maybe they start off just as a tool and weapon cleaner, maybe they help build buildings/other things. I think I would like them to be part of the group that is in charge of/goes and trades with the Octarians. Cricket can be like "Oh there are other people like me…"

So at some point. Cricket decides that it may be time to leave, we have 3 options

Grizzco finds them and starts sending workers; Cricket and Soaps mom is unfortunately killed

Cricket and Soap leave but they lie about it being a trip to somewhere else (something something salmonid lore)

Maybe one of the Octarians noticed the "abnormalities" in Cricket disguise and one day ways just like "I'm getting you out of here bro I dont care where you go just. Go." (If we go with this option, Cricket later works for Grizzco. We could treat it as them looking for the school again)

So my idea for Cricket is that they end up down in Alterna before Solfish (first neo 3) gets down there, same with the NSS (depending on when they got down there). Grizzco gave Cricket a special offer due to Crickets excellent work and abilities, but whoopsies, it ended up leading them to almost being a subject for the fuzzy ooze. They get out mostly unscathed, they either get memory loss or they still can't speak. We have another set off options:

the test facility was in a layer above Alterna (there is a diagram of it and it shows theres something above) Cricket falls down but it's fine and conscious. The NSS catch them skittering around

the facility was in the rocket or one of the islands. Cricket superjumps away for the first time and lands on the first island; it's a rough landing and Cricket ends up unconscious for temperature and trauma reasons; the NSS find them partially covered in snow and out cold (literally, they are cold-blooded, I'd imagine if they get too cold their systems slow down. They help them out though.) Ye :]

Skipping forward a bit in this re-concept, just because I can~ (loooong post ahead)

So one of the many things I found underwhelming about Return of the Mammalians is the lack of villainous impact Mr. Grizz has on his own story.

For starters, he’s straight up absent from 80% of it. =/ Just a vaguely threatening disembodied voice that does weak comedy bits with Cap’n Cuttlefish from time to time…and that’s basically it until we face him in the final battle.

The worst thing he’s responsible for in the story (as in, a successful act we have to contend with, rather than a work-in-progress that we interrupt) is dehydrating Cuttlefish…which is very temporary and played for laughs immediately afterwards. We don’t even get the opportunity to engage with this “tragedy” by actively rescuing the Cap’n in gameplay, we just suddenly find his body during a cutscene.

Compare this to Commander Tartar manipulating the player and lying directly to their face throughout the game, attempting to kill the player during the reveal of its treachery in one of the most memorable scenes of the entire series, brainwashing a former protagonist into fighting the player, and then attempting to destroy an entire city while quietly confessing that it murdered thousands of victims just to get to this point.

I’ll let you guess which one of these antagonists feels like a genuine threat, and which one just feels like a disappointment. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now, I don’t mind Mr. Grizz being less violent and deranged than Commander Tartar…the two have different personalities and slightly different goals, and anyway a body count isn’t really necessary to be a convincing villain. But I DO mind him being so totally uninvolved, despite being a character that we already knew and interacted with beforehand. Like, at the very least…talk to the player. o_O Care about the player. Do something to interfere with the player sometime before the last minute! The fact that Grizz just doesn’t give a damn about our existence for most of the campaign is baffling from a writer’s standpoint, and heartbreaking from a Grizz-fan’s standpoint. ;_; Notice me, Kuma-san!!

…Anyway, there’s a million ways to remedy this, because it’s such a simple and obvious problem that really shouldn’t exist. ^^; And the one I chose for #re_rise (besides having Grizz haunt the game like an ever-present specter, as explained here) is one of my old tried-and-true favorites: using the villain to parallel the protagonist.

Basically, both characters are lonely at heart. Agent 3 left home for the Splatlands in search of a “fresh beginning”, after spending most of their life feeling like they never fit in anywhere. Throughout the story, we get subtle clues that what they want most is belonging and friendship…which they’re clearly discovering through their interactions with Deep Cut and Smallfry, although it’s not until the climax of the final battle that they can truly believe in it and accept it.

And of course, Mr. Grizz lost his home and entire civilization, and even in the midst of a thriving new one (that he actively engages with through his corporation…!) he’s apparently such a massive bigot that he doesn’t consider it worthy of his company. ^^; Fish-people do not count to him, thus his loneliness is self-inflicted and intensified. He believes his only recourse is to transform the world back into something he can accept.

These parallels, plus the desire-manifesting powers of Alterna’s crystals (discussed in this post) eventually brings the two characters to an understanding of sorts. Without having to exchange words, they can see and consider the similarities of their innermost feelings.

This doesn’t have much of an effect on Grizz, outside of something he might muse about while Agent 3 ascends the launchpad (and maybe quietly internalize as proof that fish-people have feelings too, just to give his last-second change of heart at least one leg to stand on). But it weighs heavily on Agent 3, especially since they’re being physically changed by their adventure in a way that makes these parallels even more relevant…yes, I’m finally gonna talk about what I actually drew. ^^

My idea was that spending too much time around Fuzzy Ooze will affect you even if you don’t touch it (i.e. through splashes/aerosols), just to a lesser degree. And since Agent 3 was the first to actually enter the underground lab spaces and spends more time fighting there than anyone else, they’ve had an unprecedented amount of secondhand exposure to it.

Through O.R.C.A.’s files, they can understand why this mild fuzzification is happening to them, and that it may not be reversible, although they press on anyway (I’d like to imply that they’re willing to ignore it to impress Deep Cut~). But Grizz’s offhand comments make them realize that they may be unintentionally setting themselves up to be cast aside again, slowly turning into a repulsive mutant monster that no one will want to be around. The only one of their kind in the world, just like a certain Ursine Anomaly…and if they succeed in stopping Grizz’s plan, that’s all they’ll ever be. 

…On the other hand, if they were to sit back and let him fuzzify the world, then…no, they couldn’t do that. They…wouldn’t…

- on the captain: ‘she’s sooo much better than i am! at music and agent stuff and everything else! why did she give me her agent outfit ????’/‘she was kind of an oddball, but 8 and i helped her get back on her feet. she’s got my back now, and i’ve had hers for a while.’

- on 8: ‘she’s nice, but i don’t know why she’s so keen on doing stuff with me. she likes to talk to me and listen to music with me and make me food and all that other stuff. i don’t deserve that. she seems eccentric and peppy to strangers, but i know that’s all a ruse. also holy shit is she strong what the fuck’

- on 3: ‘thanks for kicking my ass and not leaving me for dead. also sorry for trying to attack your smallfry and all that.’

8:

- on the captain: ‘so cool! she was very apologetic when she remembered what happened in the spinal phase, and i had to tell her i forgave her a lot. it’s strange to see that she’s the captain now, since taking care of her felt like yesterday.’

- on 4: ‘i like spending time with her. she doesn’t believe she’s strong, but she thinks i am. why can’t we be strong together?’

- on 3: ‘you went into space?! how cool is that!’/‘smallfry is adorable.’

Flip (Flip w/ Agent 4, but will be babysat by Callie. Marie or Cuttlefish. Will babysit Captain 3 and Agent 3 (if neo even wants to be), and obviously their moms (pearl + marina) will take care of them)

Doesn't like being called parental petnames but rather stuff like bro/brother or big bro! Sister is off the table, but sibling/sib/sis isn't !

Doesn't regress too often or too deeply, but when they do, they regress from 3-7 but generally stays verbal.

Calls the littles they care for silly nicknames when allowed!

Careful when talking around littles because they know that if you say the wrong thing, they might feel hurt!

Not very strong, and not good at talking, but is a great listener and will follow every command when playing pretend !

While little, Eight wants to be called petnames, but is always too shy to ask whoever taking care of them

These can and will include being called their angel, their little princess, or sweet baby boy.

Chews on things they're not meant to when little, like haphazardly.

Mostly their hands or their shirt. This is a clear way for others to tell when they're starting to feel a bit small. However, anything that feels clean enough to bite WILL absolutely be bitten.

Has to be redirected to other items to chew or they won't stop

Prefers teethers over pacifiers but will chew anything.

Very snugly !! loves to cuddle w/ friends and family! Marina and Four are often victim to this.

Captain 3 !

Little but occasional babysitter. Their primary caregivers are Callie, Marie and Craig Cuttlefish

They don't act too "out of the box"

Until they're in a babyspace

Three will have trouble walking, talking and might get stressed when alone.

They used to regress covertly, but started to lose the ability to mask it after a while.

Despite the lack of verbal communication, they will always find a way to be held.

Loves to be babied always, even if sometimes they hide it.

Their regression isn't normally voluntary, but sometimes they might choose to.

Regresses from 0-5 mainly! Likes to have pacifiers to chew on.

Pet regressor! Doesn't really care to have someone to watch over them as they're pretty independent, but might hang around Callie and Marie, Eight or Deep Cut!

Super energetic and hyper, ready to cause ruckus with their Lil' buddy!

Will absolutely NOT sit still. You cannot get them to be quiet either.

Don't touch them without their permission, even when big. They don't like it at all.

Oftentimes they will be found trying to eat power eggs

Loves just running around in open spaces and climbing things!

Very fast and strong

Would probably break a tree down for fun

Very hard to get them to listen. They have trouble following any rules they set, and tend to not be patient, but some have found the trick!
