when I was like 15, a drunk woman I didn’t know at a party who was smoking a cigarette on the porch started randomly opening up to me about her infertility journey and I told her how I was my parents rainbow baby after multiple miscarriages and fertility treatments said not to lose hope. she comforted me about being a strange kid without many friends my age (hence why I was at a party full of adults thrown by my uncle) and told me everything would work out eventually. the next time I saw her like 2 years later (small town, mutual friends) she was carrying her newborn. I think about that a lot. it’s easy to feel disconnected from people and but sometimes just talking to them and hearing their point of view and relating makes you feel less alone. even if you’re only each other’s company for a few moments.

i just feel like “what if the trauma we go through is usually not noble but purposeless and terrible and the things we develop to keep us alive often change us for the worse” is one of the most important realizations you can come to in terms of like. empathizing with your fellow man and yet whenever that theme shows up in fiction so many people are immediately like its either PERFECT VICTIM OR IRREDEEMABLY EVIL. open the door and walk out of the dichotomy

nothing makes me more insane than the phrase "selling your body" btw. like was i not also selling my body at every other job i've had where i had to be on my feet all day, lifting boxes, working in a warehouse, etc. why is it that sex work is uniquely labeled as "selling your body" while every other job is sorted into another category, no matter how much that job might have a physical impact on your body. lmao.

My great grandmother lived in Appalachia her entire life. Born in the Alleghenies, moved to the Smokies. She always loved to swim, almost died in the 1930s when she contracted tetanus after cutting her leg on a jagged piece of slate in the swimming hole near her childhood home. That didn’t dampen her love of water and when I knew her, she’d often drag an umbrella and chair into the backyard pool on hot days and sit there enjoying the water and the shade.
It wasn’t until the early 2000s that the family started going on trips to Nags Head. It was a 6 hour drive, across the entirety of North Carolina, starting in the mountains and ending at the Outer Banks. She was excited, of course.
Everyone still remembers the first time she saw the ocean. We thought she would be thrilled. Instead, she stood at the shore staring into the vastness of the sea and mumbling “It’s so flat, it’s so flat. brain trying to make sense of this completely alien landscape. And I think about that a lot. I can’t remember the first time I saw the ocean, I was probably a baby. I can’t imagine how disorienting it would be to be 60+ years old and have been surrounded by the gently rolling hills of Appalachia your entire life and see, for the first time, a body of water so big you couldn’t see the other side.
She got used to it eventually. She loved the sea. Like we knew she would.
