#that bryce quote haunts me though

i desperately need to know how that date actually went. like if drink choice, wardrobe, and planning things were the worst things that happened then it really couldn’t have been that bad. clearly there’s more they’re resentful of whether that’s more history between them or something that happened on the date.

assuming there isn’t some secret torrid affair of course, my read on the situation would be claire was genuinely excited and owen self-sabotaged and continued to do so. if we go off interviews, it would make the most sense that way.

(bryce: chris said his character [owen] loves me [claire] in the beginning of the movie. i [claire] don’t really care for him though. one of the many mistakes my character makes at the beginning of the movie)

it’s very easy to see where claire’s resentment comes from: he wore board shorts to this date while I presumably dressed up. ergo he’s not as invested in this as me or he’s only here to get me in his bed. I’m inclined to think she’s genuinely upset about the clothing choice

on the other hand, with owen, i really can only understand the itinerary complaint. there’s the possible thought of: oh she’s treating this as a business arrangement. is that all this is in her mind? does she have any actual interest in me or is this some emotional/sexual quota she wants to fulfill. (personally I would find it deeply adorable though. i love you claire)

the tequila thing though? I’m more inclined to think he’s nitpicking things to make them seem incompatible to himself. because honestly it’s just tequila. if alcohol is that big of a make or break, I’m taking her side fully.

moving back a little, if we take actor’s words as character fact, we know that owen had feelings before claire got to the same place. whether that love happened before or after the date, we aren’t sure, but I think it’s a fair assumption to say he had feelings then.

which brings me back to the claire was excited, owen self-sabotaged reading. claire’s excited because she sees the idea of developing feelings and is even more taken aback by how little he seems to care (shorts). and of course she’s pissed at herself that she’s even disappointed by this because what did she expect from him?

owen is probably crushing on her at this point, which is very scary because people suck, so what does he do? board shorts! either that or he’s a dumbass who thought claire would be at all accepting towards a casual date but if he knows her well enough to crush on her, I’d assume he knows her well enough to dress in a way she’d respond positivity towards.

it might not have been a fully conscious decision, but I do believe it was an intentional one to make this date not work out so he could get rid of these Terrible Feelings. and then he keeps finding things to convince himself they’re incompatible because this is a woman who plans things!! she doesn’t even like tequila!! they’re clearly from different worlds. he cannot have these feelings for a woman like this.

naturally, this is a terrible plan that doesn’t work. now he’s just into a girl who kinda hates him and annoying her with bad innuendos until she cracks a smile is the only way he can get through to her

i really don’t think those things on the surface could lead to animosity like that. they’re just things that represent the things they’re actually bothered by. i think a date between them could genuinely turn out very well if they have a real conversation about where they went wrong the first time

For the prompt thing Bryce x jeanie wearing each others clothes. In my heart I read it like they both wear each others stuff, like Bryce in Jeanies clothes and her in his specifically

Hi, Nonny! Your prompt has been sitting in my inbox forever. I finally got inspired to finish it today. It’s pretty fluffy, but I kind of love how it turned out. I hope you do too! 

“So, start another season? Order in some food? What’re you thinking?” 

On the leather sofa next to Jeanie, Bryce lounges with his long legs stretched in front of him and his feet propped up on the coffee table. Dressed in a Harvard hoodie and a pair of sweatpants, his aura of chill is even stronger than it usually is.

“I don’t think it’s a great idea to make the delivery guys go out in this weather,” Jeanie replies, stifling a yawn. “Probably goes against that whole Hippocratic oath thing to make them risk their lives just so we can have more Szechuan chicken.”

Two days ago, they went to Donahue’s to celebrate having an entire weekend off. Laughing and flirting in a dark booth had led them to the dance floor where Bryce’s touch, his warm breath on Jeanie’s neck, and his low voice whispering promises of making her come apart in the most delicious ways had brought them here - Bryce’s loft apartment in Dorchester. They’ve been holed up together avoiding the blizzard outside by spending their time watching Netflix and having sex and really not doing much else, but Jeanie’s not complaining. Bryce’s easygoing nature is starting to rub off on her. She’s more relaxed right now than she’s felt since before starting med school.

“Okay, no take-out,” Bryce agrees. He gives her a lopsided smile and slips his hand under the blanket that’s covering her, fingers teasing upwards along her bare legs. “We could always…”

“Nah, I’m sleepy,” Jeanie yawns again and snuggles against the solid warmth of Bryce’s shoulder. “I’m gonna take a nap.”

“What? You have all of this at your disposal,” Bryce gestures along the length of his lean, muscular body, “and you want to nap?”

“Mmm…sure do,” Jeanie grins at him unapologetically. “It’s your fault for wearing me out.”

“Yeah, it is,” Bryce agrees proudly. “Well, if you’re going to sleep, then I’m watching the next episode without you.”

He hits play on the remote and the Gilmore Girls theme starts up again.

“Joke’s on you,” Jeanie tells him. “I’ve already seen every episode at least twice. By the way, you know you don’t have to keep watching this if you don’t want to, right?”

“Nah, I’m into it now. I gotta know who Rory ends up with.”

As he settles in to watch, Bryce wraps his arm around Jeanie’s shoulders and pulls her against his side. It’s a warm, easy gesture that feels natural and right and Jeanie can’t help but freeze when she realizes it’s happening again. It’s the same feeling she got last night when she fell asleep in his arms. They didn’t even have sex last night before bed. Instead, the two of them had brushed their teeth side by side in his bathroom, settled into his bed, and fallen asleep snuggled together. Last night, she’d brushed off the feeling because she was tired and it was late. But, now she’s feeling that thing again. That feeling of home just from being beside Bryce Lahela and it was all starting to feel dangerously close to boyfriend/girlfriend territory.

As much as she likes Bryce, his flirty, scalpel jockey playboy persona doesn’t exactly scream “committed relationship material.” Even if she wants to take things to the next level with him, she’s happy enough with the way things are not to ruin it by asking for more. But that doesn’t mean she should put herself in a position to make things worse for herself. 

“You know what?” Jeanie sits up abruptly and shrugs Bryce’s arm off her shoulders and stands up. “I should probably get home actually.”

“What? Why?” Bryce asks, clearly confused by her sudden change in mood. “I thought we were having a good time.”

“We are. We were. I’ve just…uh, I’ve been here for two days and I need clean underwear,” Jeanie finishes lamely as goes to the door and gathers up her heavy black snow boots. She takes a knee and focuses on loosening the laces instead of meeting Bryce’s eyes. It’s a piss poor excuse for leaving and, sure enough, Bryce sees right through her.

“You can borrow a pair of my boxers. Or you could always go commando,” Bryce offers and when she glances up, he waggles his eyebrows and gives her a wolfish smile.

Jeanie rolls her eyes and bites back the flirty response that jumps to her mind. God, she loves sparing with him and teasing him and being with him. He’s nothing like anyone she’s ever been with and when they started this whole thing, he wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a way to relieve some stress. But now...she’s not sure how much longer she can keep deluding herself into thinking she doesn’t have feelings for him.

“Come on, Jeanie,” Bryce coaxes her and the tone in his voice gives her pause. She looks up from and he’s standing right in front of her, a serious look on his face. “I can run down to the, almost certainly, haunted basement and throw a load of laundry in and then I’ll dig a pizza from the depths of my freezer. Just stay with me.”

“I…don’t think that’s a good idea,” Jeanie says, swallowing hard. Her gaze flits away from his.

“Why not?” Bryce asks. When she doesn’t answer right away, Bryce crouches in front of her and takes her chin in his hand to gently turn her head to look at him. His dark eyes search hers and she takes a deep breath before answering him. 

“Because I’m not your girlfriend, Bryce,” Jeanie finally tells him. “I’m not. And if I stay here another night, I’m going to start feeling like I am your girlfriend and I know that’s not what this thing between us is.”

“Ah, well...” Bryce says slowly. He nods thoughtfully and pauses before a resigned look comes over his face. “I guess there’s only one thing to do about that.” 

“Yes, exactly,” Jeanie breathes a sigh of relief, glad he understands and that she doesn’t have to explain herself any further. “So, we’ll take a little break and I’ll see you at the hospital.”

“Be my girlfriend.”

Bryce speaks at the same time as her. Did he just… Jeanie’s heartbeat thumps in her chest, the rushing blood in her ears giving Jeanie a good reason to believe she misheard him.

“What did you just say?”

“Oh, you heard me, Dr. Espinoza. If you didn’t, I have the number of a very reliable ENT I can refer you to.” Jeanie stares at him as he stands up, towering over her with that insufferable grin on his face.  

“Bryce…I thought...,” Jeanie ignores Bryce’s teasing as she struggles to wrap her mind around what’s happening. “We’re just friends with benefits, stress relief, blowing off steam. That’s what we agreed.”

“Yeah, but that’s clearly not working for you anymore, right? That’s what you’re sputtering about?”

“I’m not sputtering! I just…”

“Jeanie,” Bryce takes her hand and pulls Jeanie to her feet. His eyes go soft as he looks at her and Jeanie’s breath catches when his fingers brush across her cheeks and slip through her hair to cup her cheeks in his hands. “I want more too. I didn’t plan on it. I didn’t plan on you. But here we are. I want to be your boyfriend if you’ll have me, and I want you to stay. You have bewitched me, Jeanie Espinoza, body and soul.” 

“Wow. Bryce, that’s...that’s...,” Jeanie blinks up at him, momentarily breathless from his admission. A warm feeling fills her chest as she stares into the eyes of the unexpected, wonderful man before her. Suddenly, his words really sink in and her brow furrows. “Hey! That’s a quote from Pride and Prejudice!” 

“What?!? No, it’s not.” 

“Yes, it is! Darcy says that to Elizabeth in that foggy field!” 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bryce argues, though the faintest of blushes begins to creep up his neck to his cheeks. “And if you keep insinuating that I steal my best lines from Jane Austen, I’ll take back my offer.” 

“Okay, well, line stealing aside, I happen to be quite bewitched by you as well, Dr. Lahela,” Janie tells him. She stands on her tiptoes and loops her arms around Bryce’s neck as his hands slide down her back to wrap around her waist. “And I’d really love to be your girlfriend.”

Bryce’s smile is brilliant and sets her stomach fluttering with happy butterflies. He bends his head and lifts her off her feet at the same time as he lays a deep, passionate kiss on her lips. Jeanie signs as she melts into his warm embrace. When they part, breathless and laughing, Jeanie pushes back Bryce’s soft brown hair and smiles at him. 

“You ready for this next level, Lahela?”

“Hell yeah, Espinoza. Let’s do this thing.”

The character I leastunderstand: Mary Bartowski (I think).
