Seeing some of the responses to what's happening in Syria and I understand some of the suspicion but I really wish we, as leftists, would move away from hailing anything that is anti-Western as inherently "good." Syrian religious and ethnic minorities have a valid fear of the opposition mostly being Islamist but that doesn't make Assad the good guy, come on. He is literally responsible for murdering and torturing thousands of his own people. Besides, our aim as leftists in defeating US hegemony and imperialism in the region isn't to welcome Russian imperialism with open arms, that defeats the purpose.
