How I met Gesa

i’ll try to keep it short and sweet; bc that’s basically how it all went. (i say this as the story gets long) it was rather quick, i didn’t wanna take up more of his time, but still just as important and special. i tried so hard to remember every detail, it’s all a blur now.

at the end of the show, a friend of mine found me and said “i was given a sticker badge for an after party, do you want to try going in?” everyone said i had to be the one to go first since i was the main gesa fan to them. i was obviously nervous, but i said yes. i didn’t know what was going to happen.

at the time there was only one badge, so i was going in all alone as my friends waited inside. the party was decently sized, filled with people i didn’t know but seemed important i felt out of place xD

then, a certain photographer well known in the fandom was there. i was brave enough to approach him and give him a gesa sticker. he love the sticker and my outfit and he took my picture. i asked him if he could give mike a sticker and that i was a huge fan. he looks at me, smirks and then walks me over to gesa. gesa was TALL … it was genuinely surreal seeing him in real life especially unmasked in 2024.

i start to panic and the photographer introduces me to gesa. the moment gesa sees me, he greets me with a smile. i offered him a sticker and he thanked me, but while i was handing it to him, my hands were shaking like crazy. so much so that he looks over to me and was like “are you okay?” but in a way that he was worried. i just told him i was so excited. i could’ve sworn he told me “it’s okay”. as we shook hands i explained that i was a big fan of his music bc it’s really helped me over the years. i told him his music healed me. he was listening so intently, nodding and he was very focused on me as if he understood what i meant. he could probably tell i was nervous and emotional. he said “aw come here” and pulls me in for a hug.

i ask for a picture, he politely said he doesn’t take pictures bc he didn’t want to show his face. so i asked if we could take a photo w our backs facing. and he actually said yes to that.

while we position ourselves for the picture gesa tells me “lean to me” so we were shoulder to shoulder. after a few seconds, he decides to wrap his arm around me. the photographer from before took our picture.

and then after that i show him my bag with all my gesa pins on it. he seemed rather interested about it he was looking at all of them. i shakily told him i wanted to give him the one i made. he thanked me. i’m not sure what he’ll do with my gifts but im still glad i gave it to him.

he then asked me for my name. i told him my full name and he repeated it back. he said it so sweetly. i then decided to go. i had friends waiting outside and i didn’t wanna bother him more. ofc i asked for another hug and he enthusiastically said yes. we both said our thank yous and that was that.

when i left the party, my badge sticker fell inside and i couldn’t go back and get it. my friends got their badges and went inside to find it. they found it on the floor and gesa was accidentally stepping on it.

they got to meet gesa while i waited outside. they also said he was very sweet. unfortunately i forgot to get a signature, but they did. they mentioned me to him and i guess he remembered me because they said he said “aww [my name]?”

when my friends came back, they brought back my badge as a momento. me losing my badge felt like i was literally cinderella with her shoe. and gesa practically had it without knowing.

i regret not staying in there for longer, and not talking to gesa more, but it was still an amazing experience. i’m forever grateful for everyone and everything that happened to me.

“It’s time.”

Taehyung spoke up the moment Jungkook left to go to the bathroom during lunch break.

After their rehearsal with the cast yesterday, Adam (who had finally showed up) had plenty to go over with the band today. In all day rehearsal. Jin’s favourite (sense the sarcasm).

“-for the annual ceremony of pin-the-tail-on-the-Jungkook!” Tae was busy announcing.

Jimin and Hobi laughed, already digging impatiently in Tae’s bag as he took out the ‘tails’. Namjoon rolled his eyes along with the eldest two of the group, but wasn’t successful in suppressing his dimpled grin.

Pin-the-tail-on-the-Jungkook had become a tradition, but by no means an annual one as Tae had claimed. No one could remember when it was first played, so now the ‘annual’ resurrection of the game was simply held whenever someone decided they fancied it. The one common denominator was that it happened whenever their maknae was playing viola.

It went without saying that they all loved him, but unofficial orchestra rules were unofficial orchestra rules, and it gave them perfect grounds to poke fun at him. And lord knows he gave back what he got.

“We all know the rules?” Hoseok checked, taking a pack of post-it notes for himself and thrusting a badge into Yoongi’s hand.

“Yes! Now hide them!” Jimin hissed, flapping his hands when he noticed Jungkook coming back.

The rules were simple and self-explanatory. Attach your item to Jungkook without being noticed, with one catch: the game was only on during rehearsal.

So as Jin pulled his violin from his case, a bulky pack of stickers lying in his pocket (definitely not stolen from Tae’s job at the clothing store, how could you think that Jin?), he prepared for the rehearsal to devolve into chaos. Unnoticeable chaos, perhaps, but chaos nonetheless.

Adam called the band to attention and they started their first run-through. First of all, he wanted to practise the strings on their own, and Jin was soon in full-focus, lost in his music. Some passages were very difficult, but he was determined to master them. Beside him, Jimin was equally attentive.

“Okay, the opening was much better that time,” Adam stopped them, “just try to think about- hey guys! Can you quieten down a bit while I run through the violins? Yup, thanks, anyway-“

For a second, the violinists let their attention slide to the back of the band that had just been scolded. They had resorted to whispering as requested, settling down. However, Jin wasn’t put at ease.

Taehyung’s mouth was puckering as he tried to hide a telltale smirk, nodding at the first oboist while his eyes darted between them and the conductor. Most of the woodwind were exchanging little glances, shuffling in their seats.

“Right, from the top! Flutes, can you join us?” Adam rapped his baton on the stand, foiling Jimin’s attempts to catch his best friend’s eye as he turned his gaze back to his music, raising his bow once more.

Rehearsal moved on fairly swiftly. It wasn’t until a good while later that Jin smelled a rat again.

As it happened, Hoseok was the first to shoot his shot. The moment Adam told the brass he would be going over a couple of pieces they weren’t in, he ditched his instrument and dived to retrieve a book from his bag like the rest of the section.

However, from the corner of his eye, Jin could see that all was not as it appeared…

Hoseok’s eyes flicked between the conductor, who was speaking to the horns, and the back of Jungkook’s head. Settling back in his seat, he did his utmost to act nonchalant. It wasn’t convincing. Something about the line of his shoulders… his straight face…

Hoseok always smiled.

Jin narrowed his eyes.

Then, in a blur, Hoseok’s book tumbled from his hands, skidding across the floor.

Bowing his head in apology when Adam looked around, he set off, torso bent parallel with the floor as if that would render him invisible, creeping further forwards. When he reached his stray book, he crouched right down.

He was in position.

Directly behind Jungkook now, he held his breath as he pried the pages of his book open. Grinning prematurely with victory, he took the bright yellow post-it note pad, with ‘TAIL’ written on the top one, from where it was tucked into the pages.

At a painstaking pace, he peeled the first sticky note away. His hand shook as he raised it up, closer and closer until he could place it in the centre of Jungkook’s back as lightly as possible.

Shoulders sagging in relief, he began to shuffle back to his seat. But, hearing the sound behind him, Jungkook looked over his shoulder.

Alas, well-trained agents of the Jungkook-teasing squad always had a backup plan. Hobi’s worked seamlessly; with a smile and nod to the violist, he gestured with the book in his hand so Jungkook knew he had simply been collecting it and there was nothing to see here.

Safely back in his seat, Hoseok winked at Jin. Jimin was muffling his giggles in his jacket sleeve beside him.

For the rest of rehearsal until the next break, nothing more interesting happened. It was safer to spread out their attacks on their youngest friend to avoid suspicion.

After an extended break, they settled back into their seats for the tech run with the cast. Probably the most tiresome part of a show week, often running late into the night with microphones breaking, cast members messing up or directors complaining. All of which equated to a lot of sitting around for the band.

Jungkook had insisted on finishing his snacks before coming back to rehearsal. Yesterday, Taehyung had indeed brought too much and the group had hidden the bag under the tiered seating for extra sustenance today.

Anyway, the end result of this was Jungkook only seating himself once the woodwind had already tuned, in time for the whole band to watch as a yellow sticky note fluttered off his back when he sat down.

Hobi looked devastated.

“Right, mic tests for the band first,” the tech director announced from their position at the top of the audience, “let’s start with violin one, please.”

Everyone played in turn as a harried assistant adjusted mics. Jin was silently practising, staring idly at his music as his fingers mapped out the passagework, when the saxophone was called to play. At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but that itself alerted Jin.

Looking around, he found Jimin was already watching the woodwind with an amused smirk.

Usually, Taehyung would play something random and totally unrelated to the show at mic check to make people laugh. He even took requests.

But this saxophonist was sticking to the music.

Sure enough, it wasn’t Tae. Frowning, Jin noticed one of the oboists was on Tae’s chair, playing his saxophone. Searching the section, he spotted Tae with an oboe in his hands. What was going on?

Turning to their conductor, Jin saw Adam flipping through the score. He hadn’t even noticed two of his players had switched places.

When Tae had found the time to plan this was beyond Jin, since the saxophonist had spent the whole of break with the group. Then he remembered whatever the hell went on in the woodwind section during the previous rehearsal. That must have something to do with it…

Oboe was called soon enough, but Tae still didn’t play his normal selection of music. Once again, he stuck perfectly on-script, playing an oboe passage from the beginning of act 2.

Jin had never heard Tae play the oboe before, but that didn’t mean he was surprised. Tae had a habit of picking up random instruments and learning them at the drop of a hat.

He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t a little jealous.

It seemed Tae had succeeded in the first stage of his plan, however. And said plan was becoming more apparent.

Jungkook seemed to be the only one that hadn’t noticed Tae’s new seating plan, which put him as close as possible to the target himself. With the limited space in the pit, the oboes were pushed up close behind the violas.

So while the cast lined up for their mic checks, Taehyung leaned forward and gently pressed a sticker of a fox onto Jungkook’s shoulder. Then, after they had played half the overture and were stopped for the first crackly mic of the evening, Taehyung excused himself for the bathroom. On his return, his accomplice followed suit, and normalcy returned.

Taehyung had got away with it.

Much later on, they had finally reached the point in the middle of act 2 where everything is bleak and the actors are singing about losing hope and never loving again. The heroine in particular had such a song, and was struggling with timing.

As such, they were going over the part where she sings alone with the two violins, namely Jimin and Jin.

With the house lights dimmed to allow the stage lights to be tested for the tech run, the band was in near darkness, only stand lights illuminating their music. Adam and the director were close to a collective breakdown. This section was important and the audience should feel her turmoil, they said, and it wouldn’t work if she got her entry wrong.

Perfect timing, Namjoon.

A light flicking off at the back of the band was the only clue as to what was about to happen.

He had deliberately chosen to wait until this part of rehearsal to make his move. As the furthest away from Jungkook, he couldn’t employ Hoseok or Taehyung’s tactics, and he wouldn’t get away with this in a light theatre.

Placing his double bass down, he prayed the singer would mess up just once more to buy him time. Then he got on his hands and knees. The cellists gave him questioning glances as he crawled past them, but said nothing.

Suddenly, Adam sighed, calling the song to a stop, simultaneously running a hand through his hair and tipping his head down to check the score in front of him. On instinct, Namjoon ducked. Or rather, he dropped right down onto his stomach.

“Again!” the director demanded, and Jin and Jimin started up again. The song was quite beautiful in all honesty, delicate and soaring.

But down below the sweet singer, Namjoon was shuffling through the orchestra on his elbows like a large slug. Just as he got close enough, his foot caught on a music stand, making it rattle slightly.

Wincing, he looked up at Jungkook as he threw a glance over his shoulder. Thankfully, Namjoon’s form was below his line of vision, pressed against the floor as he was, and he turned around without event. Bringing his legs forward so he could kneel behind Jungkook, Namjoon made quick work of applying his own sticker, which he had swapped with Jin for the post-it notes he was first given. He had lost faith in the sticky notes after the fate of Hobi’s.

Although Namjoon had evaded detection by Jungkook and Adam, Jimin was in the perfect position to watch the whole endeavour unfold. His eyes kept straying from his music, even though he was one of the only two playing, and his bow was shaking with the effort it took to suppress his laughter.

On Namjoon’s trek back up the pit, his plot finally came undone.

Perhaps he had thought turning his stand light off would hide him from view, but now it only served to make his part of the orchestra completely dark. When he felt safe enough to get off his knees, he tripped instantly on his stool, only just catching himself before he crushed his instrument, but it was loud.

Adam was sure to be sending a dirty look his way, but tried to press on, though it soon became impossible as Jimin’s bow shuddered across the strings, butchering his passage at the same time as a loud snort escaped him. On stage, the actress had jumped at the sound and subsequently lost where she was in the music.

Calling the song to yet another halt, Adam looked at the end of his tether. Jimin’s shoulders shook as he lowered his violin, wheezes and whimpers escaping him as he fought to control himself, all while Jin stared at him in pure confusion.

Once order had been restored, they continued, eventually completing the cursed song and making it to the end of the show.

The lights went up, chatter erupting immediately from the cast while the band slumped back in their seats, beginning to pack away. It was a late one, definitely already dark outside.

Watching Jungkook, Jin saw the boy rubbing his eyes and decided the game was up. Like always, he and Jimin didn’t really have a chance at the game since they were playing the most out of anyone as violinists.

He quickly folded the green post-it note from Namjoon into an aeroplane and sent it flying straight into Jungkook’s face.

Startled, the violist fumbled with it for a moment, blinking his eyes open. At first, he looked between the paper and Jin in bewilderment. Then, Jin swore he could see the precise moment the light bulb flicked on in the boy’s head.

His mouth fell open and he contorted his body around, trying to pull off an owl-style one-eighty to see what was on his back.

As he peeled off Taehyung’s fox, the other boys approached, laughing and clapping him on the back. In return he gave them a bunny smile while his arm stretched over his shoulder to pick off Namjoon’s sticker that his fingers could barely reach.

Collecting his stuff to leave, Jungkook pressed the stickers onto his viola case. There was somewhat of a growing collection on there.

But as Jungkook left the theatre that day, his back was not bare. Yoongi’s badge dangled from his hood, undetected.

No one ever found out how Yoongi put it there.

My trip to Japan! ⛩️ Part 5 (last)

The winter solstice made an entrance with a very cold day. Getting out of Osaka station was fortunately much easier than it seemed on Google Maps, and we found our hotel easily. We left our luggage and went straight to the castle. The current one is the third iteration, rebuilt in 1970 after being destroyed twice in the 17th century, when it was first built. Therefore, at 53 years old, this version is actually the longest-standing one. Inside, it's a museum, not a castle, but it was interesting, unexpensive, and the views from the top are fantastic. What impressed me the most, however, was the double moat, huge and full of water. There were even boat rides around it (we didn't ride, but they were there).

We then went to the Namba district, where I had marked a restaurant that had an Attack on Titan collaboration, but it was over. We had lunch in a US-style burger restaurant. In fact, next to Namba there’s this area called Amerika-mura, with many shops of American items or aesthetics. Lots of hip-hop style clothing. It's worth mentioning that the commercial density of Osaka is similar to Tokyo; every building is a shopping center, and there are several covered pedestrian streets as well. Walking around,  we reached Dotonbori, Osaka's entertainment district around the canal of the same name, and went on to a street with several manga and anime shops. I had already browsed some in the previous cities and everywhere, here too, there was little to nothing on AoT. Only a handful of 2nd hand, 2nd rate keychains/badges featuring none of my blorbos (sorry Jean, I love you, but not as much as to buy merch with your horseface on it). Still, I managed to find a tiny string bag from the Sanrio collabo and a couple gachas.

For those who don’t know, gachapon are coin-operated machines that dispense a plastic capsule with a surprise inside. Like a Kinder egg, minus the egg. Each gachapon has a picture showing the trinkets you can get in that machine: small character figurines from a given franchise, or a collection of figurines following a certain theme, or a certain character in various positions; keychains, stickers, totebags... anything and everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. Japanese Rule 34: If it exists, there's a gachapon of it. The variety of themes and objects you can get from a gachapon is as overwhelming as the commercial streets of the country. Every tourist attraction has some related gachapon. In castles, there are gachas of samurai figures, tiny swords, or pins with emblems of Japan's feudal houses; near zoos, there are ones with animals. In commercial areas, there are entire gacha shops, some with several floors. Some of these shops include a container for recycling the empty plastic capsules, and all of them have a change machine, since gachapon only accept ¥100 coins. The price for gachas usually range from ¥200 to ¥500, with a majority at ¥300-¥400, although there are some "premium" ones up to ¥1000. All good, but I'm not willing to pay so much for a surprise.

In this regard, gachas are not alone: buying surprises seems to be something very deeply ingrained and popular in Japan. Many brands sell surprise products. You buy a little box, an acrylic figure, a little doll, but you don't know which model out of the available ones you'll get. In several shops there are products that aren’t for sale; they're tombola prizes. You buy a number at the counter, you get one of those items. While, as Husband observed, we’re not privvy to the exchange rings generated by this business model, not so conceptually different from the stickers we collected as kids or Kinder Eggs themselves, the profusion of surprises really took me by surprise (no pun intended), both for its ubiquity and for the prices, which can exceed ¥1000, and you don't even get a chocolate egg to console yourself if, as it happened to me twice, you get stupid Eren.

For dinner, we did manage to go to an okonomiyaki place that had an AoT collaboration. Usually, collabo places aren’t particularly good places, food-wise. They offer a menu of dishes "inspired" by whatever franchise they’re featuring, and if you spend more than a certain amount, they give you a souvenir like a card or sticker, a surprise, of course. You also have the chance to buy exclusive merchandise made specially for that collaboration. Again, many of these items are surprises. In short, the food was decent, I got my photo with Levi’s cut-out, and got a little card of him, too.

After breakfast, we took the Shinkansen to Himeji. The city's 17th-century castle, which has remained intact until today, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Himeji Castle was defensive; it's not a palace, although it may look like one from the outside. Still, it's fabulous to see what a castle was like during that time in Japan (the defensive systems are very similar to European ones. As someone who hates the cold, I was pleasantly surprised by the arrow slits with replaceable covers). It's also mindblowing that this megastructure, mainly made of wood and adobe, is still standing after three centuries.

A few years ago, for maintenance, they dismantled it... and reassembled it entirely… with the same 300 y.o. pieces. The two main columns are two logs almost a meter in diameter and 25 metres long, going from the basement to the 5th floor. The views from the top are beautiful. The visit included a stroll through the neighbouring Japanese gardens. Here, there's a very cute restaurant with views over one of the many ponds in the gardens, which, oh joy, had very reasonable prices, so being already noon, we had lunch there. We returned to Osaka, and after coffee we decided to go our separate ways so each could shop to their heart’s content until dinner. I checked a few merch shops for AoT stuff, no luck.

⬆️ This comic book shop had a lot of dedicated doodles. I looked all over twice and Yams wasn't there, but I did find some other familiar faces.

We’d planned to meet in Shinsekai, but Husband got there first and said it was pretty dead, so we met in Namba and went to Dotonbori for dinner. We had takoyaki and kushikatsu, a local specialty consisting of breaded and fried skewers. I also ordered a beef cartilage stew, it was delicious and, funnily, it sort of tasted like fricandó, one of my favourite typical Catalan dishes back home.

We woke up early to catch the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. We left our luggage at the hotel (the same one as on arrival), and here I had a great disappointment because we planned to have a mid-morning snack at a nearby place, Hekkelun, which has been selling flan since the sixties. I don't know if I saw the schedule wrong on Google or if they changed it in the ten days we were touring the rest of Japan, but it was closed on the weekend. It made me very angry because I was really looking forward to it and, had I known, we would obviously have gone in the first Tokyo cour. I needed to cheer myself up, so after a tea in front of Shinbashi station, we passed by the NTV building, where there’s a beautiful clock designed by Hayao Miyazaki.

We arrived just in time to see the movement at 12, which was, of course, super cute. We then went to the Hama-Rikyu park. It used to be the shogun's gardens and includes things like ancient tea rooms; a seawater pond, as it’s next to the bay; and duck-hunting ponds, an activity which seems to have been very popular back in the day. Using real trained ducks as bait, they led the birds to narrow corners of the pond with camouflaged huts on both sides from where they hunted them. We returned to Shinbashi for lunch and stumbled upon an inconspicuous sushi place in the basement of the station, where we ate amazing susi for almost half of what takeaway costs here. We decided to go our separate ways like in Osaka, to cover more ground. I checkedd a couple of cute stationery shops I’d bookmarked and went all the way to Shibuya to check the Attack on Titan pop-up shop (it opened on the 22nd, so it wasn't there in the first part).

Finally! I got decent merchandise (plus surprise cards for spending a lot my purchase).

There was supposed to be a collabo café nearby, but I had enough “surprises” and Shibuya was horribly crowded. I would’ve expected that a weekday at 6pm, not a Saturday at 4. I met Husband in Akihabara, where we looked at some merch stores (found nothing), had something at a cat cafe (pretty shitty, but the cats were cute), and had dinner at a nearby place.

We both woke up ridiculously early, so we had breakfast at McDonald's (the only thing open at 6 am where you could sit) and went to Meiji Jingu. It's a Shinto shrine in Harajuku where Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, are enshrined as deities. Emperor Meiji opened Japan to the world in the mid-19th century, ending two and a half centuries of isolation during the Edo era. It’s beautiful, well-maintained and free. There is a small fee for the gardens, that we also visited. These were the emperor's gardens; there's a closed tea house from where the empress would gaze at the lake, with a small pier for fishing. There's also a lily field (barren since it was the middle of winter ofc) with a gazebo to contemplate the blossoming. This field was planted in what was once a rice paddy, where the children of noblefolk were made to work in ancient times to understand the labour than went into rice cultivation and appreciate the food they had.

From there, we went to the ukiyo-e museum a couple of blocks away. It was small but very interesting, with lots of insight into this technique, the one from Hokusai’s famous "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". We ate at a nearby place, Kyushu Jangara: the ramen was excellent, with its tonkotsu broth, soft-boiled egg, and the comforting feeling that a proper bowl of soup brings on a cold winter noon. We took a stroll through Harajuku; it was so full it was a challenge to walk through the pedestrian street. We then walked down the main avenue, full of fancy brands, to Omotesando Station, where we took the metro to Tokyo Station. Here is Character Street, a gallery of character shops. I’d heard it was expensive, it wasn’t so good, yada yada yada… well, here I did get more AoT stuff, including Sanrio items.

I stopped by the hotel to drop off the purchases, and we met at the KFC in Shinbashi to buy our "Japanese Christmas Eve dinner." The tradition, born from a 1970s advertisement, is to have KFC for dinner on this day. Despite what the decorations might suggest, Christmas is not celebrated here. They’re just into it for the aesthetics.

It was our last night in Japan, but not our last adventure! Around 11pm, right before getting into bed, we got an email saying our flight was canceled. Wham!

Needless to say, we slept like shit, and at six, we were already awake. Husband chatted with Lufthansa, and they rebooked us on a flight two hours earlier than the original one, so we got dressed and rushed to the airport. Every cloud has a silver lining, though, and I was thrilled when we got to ride on the LTS monorail! See you, Japan!

¹ POCKETS.

wallet. it’s one of those single zipper, one pouch, wallets that is constantly being tested by the amount liam shoves into it. it’s an orange leather color, and very much coming apart. she’s done a super glue job here and there. inside are crumpled receipts, a penny and a nickel, and some cards: school id (it’s an old photo of liam back from freshman year of college… somehow it looks entirely different from liam now), insurance, a gift card to a coffee shop, two debit cards, and their state id (it’s actually a recent photo— liam only got their license a year ago)

phone. it’s a small, older silver phone model that still has a headphone jack. it’s honestly a wonder how it’s still alive, having slipped out of their pockets and off tables so many times. they can’t wear a case with it or it gets too bulky in the pocket of their spider suit. instead, it’s covered in stickers on the back.

keys. their keys are occasionally shoved into their pockets, on the common occasion they feel overwhelmed and can’t stand them on their side. this is one of many items that finds itself in different places based on liam’s state.

tangled earbuds. there’s always one of the buds hanging out of any pocket liam shoved them into— a vibrant blue pair that gives them grief trying to unknot.

² KEYCHAIN

keys. they stay clipped to their side when they’re back home. with a wrist length lanyard, all five keys are constantly clanging up against their side thanks to a small, rusting, carabiner. some days liam can’t stand the extra stimulation to their synesthesia and tucks them into a pocket while she walks, other days it’s a nice grounding tool.

research badge id. it hangs there too, they need to have it easily accessible on campus but as soon as they’re off the grounds it gets shoved into a pocket or they’re backpack’s front pouch. they’d rather strangers don’t read their full name.

a photo momento keychain. back covered in tiny stickers— bar codes, fruit stickers, scraps from any sticker in the lab. on the other side, behind scratched up plastic is a photo of roxy and liam visiting the moma.

³ SCHOOL BAG

it’s a pretty well cared for blue jansport, with very intentionally placed patches on it. they’re adult achievement patches and fun ones they’ve picked up from small novelty shops.

keys. sometimes located in the front pouch. see: keychain section for more.

laptop. it’s an older macbook, nothing too intense. it runs whatever they need for school and nothing more, but it doesn’t need to. it’s silver, no case, plenty of plant stickers and some doodles over sticky notes on the inside. with that of course comes the laptop charger & one for their phone as well.

binder. 3-ring, half inch, an odd orange coral type of color. none of the 3-rings are actually used, but there’s handfuls of lab packets shoved into the pockets of it. liam’s old lab badge sits in the front cover.

loose highlighters, pens, pencils. there’s not really a place for them in their backpack, they just throw them wherever they feel like it. if they sort their backpack they try to put all of them in the front pocket but that only lasts a couple days. half of them are definitely dead or dry.

gum. liam prefers spearmint, anything else is too strong or too sweet. most of the time, they forget it’s in there and ask to borrow gum from everybody else.

loose coins. any change liam gets gets deposited straight into the front pouch of her backpack. it’s kind of a mixed dangerous bag to shiver your hand in honestly.

granola bars (& granola bar wrappers). they bring and pocket snacks wherever they can find them. with so many long days at the labs and on campus, liam breaks a rule every now and then to open up a basic bar and get some food in their system.

sunglasses. if there’s one thing liam can be recognized by, it’s their heart shaped sunglasses, they have a couple pairs and in different colors too.

water bottle. it’s a plastic water bottle, half filled, mostly crumpled and with the tag falling off. they keep meaning to use one of their four or five reusable water bottles but always forget & end up buying one on campus.

painkillers. liam is always sure to have ibuprofen and tylenol on hand, sometimes even tums. you never know.

headphones. round yellow and black, they’re a cheap pair of over-ear headphones with an average quality but they do a great job of blocking noise out.

⁴ MULTIVERSE BAG

it’s the same blue jansport.

keys. same as before, this time shoved into the bottom of the bag, so far down they forget they’re there until they jab liam in the back because they’ve rotated the wrong way. they’re useless during this time in her life.

clothes. traveling is unpredictable, and just because earth 1530 has a nice new york summer doesn’t mean the rest of the universes are the same. after six months, it hardly matters, liam’s doomed to spend the winter in tons of harsh new yorks. spare clothes are a must and they include certain stand out items: spare converse (liam burns the rubber off more shoes than they can count), an atrociously loud and colorful sweater, and three pairs of fun patterned socks with sayings on them. there’s some obvious other essentials too, but it’s pretty limited to what fits. the spider suit is obviously in there too, when they’re not wearing it & so are their signature heart shaped sunglasses.

yellow spray paint can. one way liam keeps track of everywhere they’ve been, and everywhere roxy’s been, is by using a certain spray paint design by a landmark special to both of them— a pizza place in upper manhattan. she hopes roxy sees it, she hopes roxy starts leaving her own signs, but liam’s not back in the same place twice too often.

cash & loose coins (in different currencies). same as before— it’s anything they’ve scrounged up, found on streets, or been lended.

two journals. there’s nothing special about them on the outside, but their binding is very much being tested by every single entry and item liam tapes onto the pages. it’s their way of taking notes and keeping track of everywhere they go. it’s more or less how they catalogue the multiverse in the early days that allows them to establish the web. this is accompanied by the same loose highlighters, pens, pencils rolling around in their bag as back home.

snacks, wrappers, and bottle caps. finally upgraded to a reusable water bottle, and a large assortment of pop tarts, fruit snacks, and all sorts of bars. they’re all of course smushed or broken, but liam hardly minds any of that on the long days. they still shove wrappers and metal bottle caps into the bag when there’s nowhere to dispose of them.

electronics. no laptop, but they’ve got their phone and a small point and shoot camera that’s withstood the rest of the universe. they don’t build things like they used to. for any piece of tech, there’s a charger to accompany it. there’s earbuds in this mix too— the same tangled ones as before.

painkillers. they’re prepared back home, they’re especially prepared now, with the added pack of alt verse dayquils that have kept them upright through a couple universes.
