So y’all remember that AU where Aunt Cass and Obake are siblings, AKA The Aken/Hamada Collective?  Have some art of the siblings being siblings.

So when Obake’s home at the Lucky Cat with Cass he tends to slum down a little—it’s his sister, he doesn’t have to dress to impress, obviously.  Plus when he stays home someone else makes the coffee, which is always a bonus. ;)

Obake’s sweater and mug are in reference to the song “Istanbul (not Constantinople),” which was stuck in my head while working up some of the info for Austinbul—figure if there’s an Austinbul, there’s a Dallastinople. XD

Being that AU where Obake and Aunt Cass are siblings, which resulted in total chaos and a good chunk of angst but eh, it's Big Hero 6, angst is to be expected. Basically the boys, in addition to their aunt, have a chaos uncle who does not vibe with the law and neither do his friends who also end up being Aunt Cass's friends too. Also the whole star machine thing never happens because Aunt Cass has Opinions about her cafe getting nuked no blowing up the city Bob.

Obake: But science!

Cass: BOB!

The Aken/Hamada Collective--Christmas Bits #3

On the list of Christmas specials the Aken-Hamadas make a point to watch, White Christmas is always a priority because it’s Elaine’s favorite Christmas movie

The collective, during their knockabout years, did indeed go to Vermont one year to try to recreate the movie for funzies (also to get Obake out of Miami, he had done things again)

Elaine got the outfit they wear at the end when she was little and wore it until it fell apart, got a grown-up version of it that year

The Aken/Hamada Collective--Christmas Bits #2

Cass will play a ton of old Christmas songs since that’s what they listened to growing up (parents were big fans of Bing, Dean, Frank and the Beach Boys) but she’ll also play a lot of country Christmas and Jimmy Buffet, plus Harry Belafonte, since she got used to listening to that while wintering in Austinbul and Miami with Obake in their knockabout years

She also got him to learn some of the dances over the years so when a really rockin’ song comes on she expects some assistance

Oh look it’s these two goombas—

So most of my writing time right now is occupied by LaL 2, but infrequently I’ll circle back to The Aken-Hamada Collective, AKA that AU where Obake and Cass are siblings.  Do have some stuff written up for them, and in comparing what I have written for the ‘main’ story and what I have written on the side, I seem to prefer writing the stuff that comes pre-canon.  Saying that, I do have some lined up and ready to go, just need to do the illustrations for them.

On the topic of the art…Cass 100% wants to do cute and goofy stuff and Obake doesn’t, especially before coffee, he probably just rolled out of bed after Cass has been up and running for a good five hours.  It’s not his fault he’s a night owl, okay???

Also reference time, Obake’s mug is in reference to the song “Crazy = Genius” by Panic! At the Disco, while his sweater is based on a shirt Krumitz wears on CSI: Cyber.  Now it’s the question of if he’s the nerd that bought the sweater or if one of his relatives did instead. XD

More Big Hero 6~

This was neither the first nor the last time Cass had to lecture Obake about keeping kids out past their bedtimes.

More on that Aken/Hamada Collective fic I’ve been picking at—based on this meme that I keep seeing around.  Usually I don’t go for meme jokes, but this one fit too well. XD  Obake might hate the mornings (as we saw in this piece), but he can easily go all night. Meantime, Cass can’t keep late hours but she can certainly get up at stupid-o-clock in the morning and run all day. Hiro meanwhile just needs more sleep.

Did this in my sketchy monochromatic color wash style—was initially going to make Obake’s hair stripe red but when I did it stood out too much.  Ah well still had fun with this. :D

More Big Hero 6~

More on that Aken/Hamada Collective I pick at on occasion—The Addams Family Values came on last night and I felt compelled.  Presenting dialogue that I am pretty sure has happened at least once in the Aken household….

Anywho—Elaine’s older than her sibs by a minimum of eight years or so, while Cass and Obake (Bob) are about a year apart.  Cass also had a semi-goth phase due to hanging out with Obake a LOT, so some of his punk-goth-ness rubbed off on her.  The end result is kinda reboot-Webby Vanderquack in outfit and personality, and she tended to follow Obake’s lead until he skipped several grades and they weren’t with each other nearly every waking minute.

Moving on—did this in my old-photo style I’ve been using to represent the Aken sibs, it’s fun and actually kinda easy to do once you figure out which filters to use. XD  Now off to write more….

More Big Hero 6~

More for that Aken/Hamada Collective AU fic I’ve been picking at—the idea bonked me on the head and I decided to go with it. XD  In other news, Obake is by no stretch of the imagination a morning person, his sister is, he loves her dearly, but good NIGHT Cass don’t be so PERKY before noon. He gets better after a couple of cups of coffee tho.

You’ve seen him in that sweater before here, saw a chance to finally sneak up on the full design for it (might finalize the actual graphic and share later).  I’ve gotten plenty of novelty shirts and sweaters like that from my Dad’s business trips over the years and I love the character they have—although I question why hot places like Arizona sell black shirts. The coffee cup, meantime, is in reference to the Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol, an April Fool’s joke done by coders whom I assume had too much time on their hands. As for his pajama bottoms…he’s got a ton of science-themed jammies don’t judge him or he’ll turn your machines against you once he’s properly caffeinated.

Done in my combo sketchy-sketch and color wash with the exception of the sweater graphic, which did have solid lineart (that I then shaded so it wasn’t just slapped on his chest). Now to get back to writing….

Another Aken/Hamada Snippet:

Obake is…absolutely no good in the kitchen

Yes theoretically he should know how to cook it’s chemical reactions and following instructions is a thing but he has never felt compelled to do more than figure out coffee and instant ramen we’ll just leave the cooking to Cass she knows what she’s doing

This does not mean he stays out of the kitchen

He’ll hang out in the kitchen and bug Cass while she’s working and be varying levels of helpful while doling out stupid puns

You can’t do that, Cass—you don’t have the time! *holds up container of thyme*

Cass: Bob get out

Obake, of course, stays out of stabbing range

He also did this to Momakase when they were dating, which was one reason he was totally banned from the kitchen

He’s more inclined to humor Momakase, only because she can throw knives

Cass cannot, Cass kicks him out repeatedly but lets him come back in because he’s tall and there’s stuff on the top shelf she needs

And it gets him in range to smack him in the face with batter

More on The Aken-Hamada Collective—you know, that AU where Obake and Cass are siblings?  I’m sure y’all thought I forgot about this, didn’t you? XD

Anywho…yeah this is what these two nerds do when the boys stay over at their friends’ houses for the night.  As I said before, I figure the Akens grew up in their equivalent of the 90s/00s so they probably grew up on boy bands—which makes it funny when 4 2 Sing shows up because:

Aunt Cass and Uncle Bob exchanged confused glances at that statement.

“The boy band market hasn’t been saturated since…I don’t know, when did the Jonas Brothers break up?” she asked.

“You don’t want to know,” Uncle Bob said.

“And why not?”

“Because the number of years ago it was is depressing.”

Aunt Cass went quiet at that, evidently calculating—

Buried her face in her hands after a few moments.

“And what did I tell you?”

Which is a total mood and the main reason I dislike Pixar’s new movie Turning Red is because I did not need to be informed that the Backstreet Boys were twenty years ago, dangit.

In other news, Cass is wearing an Oh Boyz shirt—since Big Hero 6: The Series and Kim Possible had the same people work on it, I figure there’s some crossover (they might have actually met Kim Possible once when they were kids and Obake kidnapped a boy band for Cass for her birthday).  2004 is the year the “Oh Boyz” episode aired and I was not ready for that to be that long ago. D:  Obake, meanwhile, is wearing a sweater that says I get my coffee from Austinbul—I have a bunch of those novelty touristy T-shirts from Dad buying them for me and I actually really love the personality that goes into them. :D Which means at some point I’m going to have to do the rest of Obake’s sweater so we can see it….

Did this in my sketchy-sketch and monochrome style, which I love—focusing on shading and tone is a fun challenge I like to impose on myself sometimes. :D

Also, it occurs to me that since these two goof off like this and possibly know the whole song and dance routine by heart, the “Krei-oke” episode might actually go like this:

“Remember how you said I could cash in on that favor?” Aunt Cass asked.  “I’m cashing in right now.”

Uncle Bob made a face at that.  “Now see, when I said that, I was hoping that’d involve helping you hide a body.”

She waved him off.  “Oh please, I know you’ll do that for free—this I know I have to cash in on for you to do.”

Uncle Bob looked like he was very dearly regretting everything leading up to this.  “In front of people?”

“Yes, Bob, that’s what karaoke is.”

Obake requests that you send help plz

A snippet on that Aken-Hamada AU:

Obake totally as a kid had A Phase—brief one, mind you—where he tried to get in on the biker/skater scene

Briefly

I imagine the Aken kids grew up in their universe’s equivalent of the 90s/00s during peak grunge and when Tony Hawk (Tonii Taka?) was at the height of his popularity

And Obake did all the calculations and physics and such and went oh yes I can TOTALLY do this

The risk he took was calculated but man was he bad at math

So he makes a whole thing in the backyard and gets Cass to help, when he gets ready to do it Cass has the camcorder and Elaine has the cordless phone in one hand and the car keys in the other, because she just KNOWS this will end badly and she’ll either have to drive him to the hospital herself or call an ambulance

Long story short is Obake failed to account for personal skill and did totally wipe out hard enough to be rushed to the hospital

Cass is filming and laughing the whole way

Obake is yelling at Elaine and claiming all the safety stuff she made him wear threw off his calculations

Elaine is yelling at Obake and telling him well at least I’m not driving you to the MORGUE if you’re so smart why didn’t you account for the extra weight?

So, after healing up from his various bumps, bruises, scrapes, stitches, and greenstick fractures, Obake does revise his calculations and try again

This time around the doctor stitching him up suggests finding a new hobby. Obake agrees

(Obake also thinks his idiocy is safe on the camcorder because of how much fuss it would be to play it on anything else.  What he doesn’t count on is Cass telling Tadashi this and Tadashi being motivated enough to dig it up, convert it, and put it on YouTube oops)

More Big Hero 6~

Hi, can I interest you in some pics of older Akens? :3

So if you’ve been following me on Tumblr you’ve seen this beast of a post I started that grew completely out of control apologies to anyone who doesn’t follow me for BH6 content but I regret nothing. General gist is I one day asked the question what about an AU where Obake and Cass are sibs and it kind of snowballed from there.  But I love it. :D

Anywho, we had them as young kids—now have them as young adults!  Presenting the Aken kids, from left to right: Elaine, Bob (AKA “Obake”), and Cass.  Elaine’s probably in her early thirties here and in-between deployments with Obake and Cass being in their early to mid-twenties, Obake out of school and Cass still in college (and yet to stab a dude by accident).  This is sometime after Obake blew up half of SFIT and patched himself up but before Elaine meeting Kaijo Hamada, so we’re in the free-range young adults causing problems on purpose stage of their lives.  And, possibly, it’s either Momakase or Elaine’s army friend Sam holding the camera.

Also I love how Obake ended up being the tallest but still picked on by his sisters. XD

 Did this in my sketchy monochrome style and then doctored it to look like an older photograph despite nobody present being old enough to have been when black and white photos were a thing but what the hey, aesthetic. Looked up army uniforms (technically ROTC uniforms) for Elaine and then figured out a way around doing the pattern by hand—not sure if I succeeded but with the exception of one or two spots I think it reads well.  I…also got the name tag on the wrong side of the uniform oops pretend you didn’t see that. X\

But anyway have been having fun with this AU—now to work on writing it some more….
