i understand why the danny phantom fandom had a hard time deciding on whether or not jack and maddie are bad parents, because there’s a lot of moments in the show where they’re genuinely well-intentioned and even good parents, and other times where they’re blatantly awful and borderline abusive

but i feel like nobody considers that danny phantom is a show that prioritizes exaggerated comedy and status quo before realistic characterization and character development. don’t get me wrong, the fandom is very much aware that danny phantom didn’t have the best writing and could’ve improved in a lot of places. it’s kinda like, we just gotta take that into consideration too when deciding on how good or bad jack and maddie’s parenting is

the fact that they strapped him to a machine that violently spun him around to “spin the crazy out of him” in that one episode should immediately make them abusive parents. but there’s this gray area where you’re not sure if you should include that or not when making a judgment because it was obviously written as just a joke, but it’s still canon at the same time? and it gets even more confusing because there’s other moments in the show where they care about their son and his safety, but they also did…that. and many other things too

this is a bigger issue with danny phantom’s writing in that it isn’t sure what kind of show it wants to be. it’s ok for a superhero show to have comedic moments, but it’s weird to make it convoluted in a way that the viewer isn’t sure what the tone is. just some thoughts i have

fiber arts really is such an insane category of Things in how it can draw you in. like, 6 or 7 years ago i learnt to crochet and made a few terrible hats and scarves. then i learnt to knit because i wanted to knit a scarf for my friend (now fiance :D). then i realized it should be a woven scarf so i picked up weaving instead, but i still really liked knitting so now i was doing 3 crafts. somewhere along the way i started dyeing yarn as part of my kitchen experiments, and then i was like fuck it i wanna make my own yarn ! and that is where the problems happened. in the span of like 5 years ive acquired like $2000 of various tools (spinning wheel, combs, cards, blending board, several looms, etc), bought dozens of fleeces, and now my bedroom is basically a craft room with a bed, i have wool covering every flat surface in there as well as a huge dresser full of wool and several large drawers full of wool, i meticulously scrape every last bit of avocado out of the peel so i can use it to dye fleece, and i don’t go anywhere (including in my own house) without at least 2 knitting projects and a spindle.

im not complaining or anything, but the rapid shift from ‘guy who does stuff, idk’ to ‘guy who is worryingly obsessed with wool and will infodump at length about medieval sheep husbandry and the history of nettle as a textile if you give him half a chance’ is like. extremely funny to me.

Ethersea hyperfixation day 815 I have started obsessing over a character who functionally does not exist within the narrative (do you guys ever think abt Devo’s mother. because I do.)

some headcanons under the cut

- I’ve been calling her Aurèlie!

- She’s a songstress from the travelling Hominine performer group that came to the shoreside, and her outfit is inspired by traditional French dresses!

- Devo looks almost just like her, and his accent derives from her too.

- Had an acrimonious parting with her Cern partner not long after the move to Founder’s Wake.

- Wasn’t entirely subscribed to the Parish’s beliefs, and was mostly there because it provided shelter for herself and her child, and kept her hidden away from the Cern family whom she wanted nothing more to do with.

- Stopped singing almost entirely after the move, only singing lullabies and other melodies for Devo and no one else.

- Was often reclusive and aloof with the other parishioners— she was uncomfortable with the strange interest they seemed to have in her child. She liked Guidance the least.

- Intended on leaving the Parish with Devo when he was a little older, but it was never able to happen.

- The reasoning for her disappearance or what became of her after is not exactly known, but it was likely not of her own volition— she loved Devo more than anything, and that likely made her a threat to what the figureheads in the Parish wanted from him.

Hey. I'm not really one to throw my hat into the ring over any kind of discourse or anything like that, it's really not my style. But it is really upsetting seeing mutuals, especially my friends, openly and honestly kinda viciously put themselves down.

I struggled a LOT with self love/acceptance, and I know how hard it is to achieve it, but I promise you the effort is SO worth it. Self shipping, whether it's a coping mechanism or a hobby, is something that should make you happy, not sad, and believe me it is detrimental to your health to constantly be making a mockery of yourself, especially through the lense of something that you LOVE.

I know each one of you has boundless love for your f/os and for each other, turn it INWARD. Make your f/os as crazy about you as you are about them, even if you don't really believe it at first and I promise you that over time you will and self shipping will be more fun than ever.
