Actually, you know what, I'm probably going to be annoying about Starkid/TinCanBros etc for the rest of the year because this is truly the year of those guys for me
I've made new friends thanks to a StarKid cosplay in january who immediately joined me in losing our minds figuring out the TinCanBros puzzles
We followed the Tinlightenment kickstarter in february on the edge of our seats and really formed a little community
The Starkid kickstarter came along in April and brought a whole wave of nostalgia with it as they hit their 15 year anniversary too
We just had the concert this weekend
Said group of friends and I will be running a Starkid meet at MCM later this month
I'll be seeing Solve It Squad in person at the Edinburgh Fringe in August
followed by Spies Are Forever in London in september
not to be nostalgic on main or anything
but I think Starkid was among the first things I posted on tumblr 15 years ago
so the concert was really like such a big deal to me and I'm gonna be a little bit annoying about it for a while
#and at some point I'll get to just video chat with the TCB bois#thanks to the power of pledging high enough on their kickstarter#honestly I just wanted the jacket#it's a starkid/tcb heavy year for someone who thought they weren't that invested in Starkid/TCB any more#to sing gotta get back to hogwarts with 2000 people was such an incredible experience

Our goal with CATaclysm is to create an easy-to-learn action-packed tabletop role-playing game that places the fate of the world in the capable claws of furious feline fighters. In CATaclysm you play a Cat, not a Cat person. You think like a Cat. You act like a Cat. Because you are a Cat! The only difference between the Cats you play and your Cat at home is that the Cats of CATaclysm stand on two feet, wear clothes and armour, and swing axes into Rats, Toads, and Frogs. The Cats are aided by Meowgic, a mystic force that they have learned to harness and use to defend Cat civilization.
CATaclysm is a game created by Brent Logan and Shiraz Sheikh, and beautifully illustrated by Toma Feizo-Gas. Together they form Akinji Entertainment, and this is their very first RPG.
Da humanz iz ded. No moar fud for us. No moar scratchez for us. No moar protecshun frum teh outsides for us. We haz taken teh earthâŚ
Catain Galileo Furrwhisker.
No Cat knows exactly how long it has been since the humans left, but one thingâs for sure, they left in a real hurry. The Cats can still see the majestic Human cities of glass and steel on the horizon on a clear day, but they dare not approach, not without protection. These places have become forbidden zones because they are filled with a mysterious and sinister evil: Miasma.
Miasma is a horrible, evil substance that eventually corrupts and destroys everything it touches⌠well almost everything. The despicable Rats, Toads, and Frogs feed off of Miasma, and it is even rumored that they can control it for their own nefarious ends. The Cats believe that Miasma is what chased the humans away in the first place, and now it is their responsibility to defend the world, and Mommy Nurtur, against it.
Although most animals have evolved into sophisticated, intelligent beings, Cats have been given a very special gift from Mommy Nurtur that singles them out from all the other creatures: Meowgic. This mystical force is where the Cats draw their power - the source of their nine lives. As their birthright, all Cats can use Meowgic, however some breeds are more attuned to its power than others.
Feline society is quite complex. Cats are tribal, living in large societies known as clowders which are based on their breed. As a player you choose to play a breed, of which 9 are the most common, each having their own special talents and gifts. The Maine Coons are a large warrior and seafaring breed who are at home both on land and in water; The slippery and sneaky Egyptian Mau have the fastest of cat-like reflexes, making them effective rogues and assassins; the bookish Persians have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge which sends them to the furthest corners of world in search for lore, and; the mysterious Manx are powerful Meowgicians that can manipulate Meowgic better than any other breed.
In recent years, Cats have become extremely curious of their origins and the fate of their ancient masters: the humans. The Cats do not worship humans (did they ever?) and were in fact quite indifferent to things human, however they now know that the key to understanding their place in the world is to uncover what happened to them. Cats now scour the world searching for ancient human lore and artifacts, going to great lengths to acquire them. The ancient Catains (the founders of the original 9 breeds) have left clues for later generations throughout the land of Cats and it is up to you, the Cat Hero, to find them!
This fantasy-based role-playing game brings a fast-paced combat module and a rich Cat-like role-playing experience that creates a theatrical game that moves with agility and grace. Akinji Entertainment has designed CATaclysm with the intention of making it easy-to-learn for those who have never before tried RPGs but at the same time giving it enough bite to keep seasoned players asking for more. We feel that we have accomplished this in two ways: Firstly, by designing a new RPG engine that does not intimidate the new player but at the same time is faithful to the way most RPGs are played, and secondly; by creating an immersive story that is compelling and conducive to a rich role playing experience.
Ph4se Lite (âPhase 4 Liteâ) is Akinjiâs premiere game mechanic that keeps play quick and intuitive. Whenever a Hero wants to attempt an action that has a chance of failure, they roll a ten-sided die (or âd10â). To determine success of the task (for a Talent, Skill, or Attack):
Roll a d10
Add any relevant scores and modifiers
Compare the result to the required result If the required result is met or exceeded, the Hero performs the action or task. If the result is lower, the Hero fails.
Ph4se Lite also introduces a unique life management system that does away with crunchy hit points and replaces them with colour-coded conditions called Phases. These phases represent a Heroâs physical and mental condition as they interact with their environment. Each phase represents a different state of being whether it be cool and collected (green), stressed and winded (yellow), injured (red), or dead or incapacitated (black). Moving into each phase may lock up or unlock certain abilities and talents. Tracking your Heroâs phase is easy with a Life-Force Dial (included with the base game) and the dials are large enough so that everybody at the table is aware of the groupâs health at a quick glance.
CATaclysm debuted at Gen Con 49 two years ago. Originally intended as a oneshot, it was an instant hit with players who wanted more. Since then we have tried to incorporate more, fleshing out the game world and the Cats that make it their home. Since then, we have created a deep and mythical lore-based fantasy realm that will allow players to immerse themselves fully into a rich tapestry of Cat-like role play. We love storytelling and vivid role-playing scenarios and this is another aspect that we have tried to incorporate into CATaclysm. We want to arm both gamemasters and players with lore that can delve deep into the heart of Cat culture, legends, and mythos.
At Akinji Entertainment we believe that every great story needs great art, and we have tried to spare no expense to make that a reality for CATaclysm. We are very fortunate to have Toma Feizo-Gas as our lead artist on this project. Toma comes with years of experience in Fantasy/Sci-Fi illustrations, having worked on many RPG titles such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Mutant Chronicles, Magic: The Gathering, and the new Star Trek RPG. The illustrations you see here are all done by Tomaâs gifted hand and you can see how each Cat is beaming with a unique personality.
But good art doesnât come cheap. We want to make sure that Toma is appropriately compensated for the great work heâs done so we have come up with an idea that we hope will facilitate that, and at the same time give you a unique opportunity to take advantage of. During the production process, if you back us at specific pledge levels, we will add your cat to the game! Just imagine your furry feline gracing one of the pages of the Core Rulebook, the GM screen or supplement - or even the book cover! There are four pledge levels that you can pledge to get your catâs likeness in the game:
Copied Cat (CAN$250): Pledge at this level and we will put your heroic cat in either the Core Rulebook, or one of our other products or supplements from the Kickstarter. Your cat will be credited on a special page in the Core Rulebook. Limit 20 spots.
Copied Cat Hero (CAN$350): Pledge at this level and your cat will be featured on Chapter plate. Each chapter will have a lead-in illustration one of which will depict your cat in a heroic scene! Limit 15 spots.
Catain (CAN$750): At this pledge your catâs likeness will be used as an archetype for one of the main breeds or paradigms in the game. If your catâs breed is not already in the game we will create one to fit your cat. If the breed already exists and has an illustration, we will create a paradigm hero (see Stretch Level 2 below) for your cat instead. Limit 25 spots.
Legendary Catain (CAN$1000): At this pledge level your cat will grace the Core Rulebook cover! Up to three cats can be added to the cover scene, so make sure you pledge fast!
For kindly supporting us in our project, everyone who pledges from the base pledge (Kitty Citizen) and up, will receive the Cat Package, which is essentially the CATaclysm Game Box. The game box comes with:
Full-Colour Illustrated Core Rulebook: The book is planned to be about 6x8 (A5) with gloss finish high-quality paper. The current page count is approximately 110 pages, and sections dealing with Character Creation, Breeds, Feats, Skills and Talents, Combat, Meowgic, Items, as well as a GM section, which fleshes out the CATaclysm world and also includes an introductory adventure.
A Pair of 10-Sided Dice: The box will also include 2 beautifully customized d10s, which is the only set of dice you need to play the game. Remember, the highest number you can role is 9 - a 0 is exactly that, a zero!
A Set of High-Quality Dials: These fully assembled dials are made from a durable 800gsm board, full-colour illustrated with matt varnish with linen finish. They are held together with a plastic button that makes turning the dials smooth and easy. You get:
3 Player Hero Dials
3 Lives Dials to track your 9 Lives
4 Enemy Dials
1 Enemy Leader (Chief) Dial
1 Boss Dial
As a very special thank-you to those who support us on Kickstarter, everyone who pledges the base pledge (Kitty Citizen) and up will receive a Kickstarter Exclusive Dice Bag (CAN$15 value) filled with 5 custom d10s!! The Dice Bag will feature the Black Cat Paradigm archetype Pawzzt DoâPurrden leaping through the air, duel-wielding a pair of curved daggers. Yep, itâs pretty epic.
We are pleased to include a full adventure in the Core Rulebook entitled: The Palace of Ss'inar Hiss. In this adventure, the players are recruited by a mysterious noblecat, Sir Whiskers Shadow, to search for an ancient tome that holds information about the legendary Catains, the heroic founders of the Cat race. However the tome is said to lie within the Palace of Ss'inar Hiss, the long dead Adder Lord, and is guarded by a foul tribe of rats led by a pair of crazed feral cat brothers. The heroes must storm the palace, retrieve the tome, and make off with any human artifacts they can find... sounds easy enough. But there is something waiting for them in the dark...
Kickstarter campaign ends: Mon, November 13 2017 4:16 PM UTC +00:00

Case Study: How To Use Your Blog To Crowdfund Your Next Project
Todayâs post is a case study with sustainable living educator, Laura Trotta.
Laura used her blog to crowdfund more than AUD 37,000 for sustainability initiatives, including the construction of her Self Sufficiency in the Suburbs membership site and her trip to Antarctica to participate in a global sustainability program.
Hereâs how she did it.
When I launched my eco-living blog lauratrotta.com in late 2015, I never imagined it would become the launchpad for crowdfunding substantial amounts of money to grow my business (and my impact). I simply saw it as my main platform to inspire and educate others to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Yet just months after launching, the combination of my vision and tight funds had me looking at alternate funding sources to design and build a membership platform for my online eco-living programs.
I didnât have the finances invest in the project and develop it to the quality I wanted (and my followers expected). So I decided to crowdfund the project.
And the rest is history.
Within a few weeks I raised more than AUD 15,000 (more than enough to cover the project costs), and had 54 members in my Self Sufficiency in the Suburbs membership community.
Buoyed by the success of this initial campaign, a year later I ran a second campaign and raised more than AUD 22,000 to secure my ship berth to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound program.
I was selected as one of 80 female scientists worldwide to travel to Antarctica for a climate change and women in science initiative. But this once in a lifetime opportunity came with a hefty price tag that could financially sink my family.
With the payment deadline to secure my ship berth fast approaching I asked my online following for support via (you guessed it) a crowdfunding campaign.
And Iâm so glad I did. Not only did I raise the funds to accept my selection, I helped 200 supporters become part of something special.
I could go on and on about how crowdfunding through my blog has helped me. But Iâd much rather take a closer look at how it can help you.
Whether itâs securing funding upfront, catapulting their visibility, or seeing if a business concept will fly, more and more bloggers and entrepreneurs are turning to crowdfunding over traditional forms of finance.
In fact, 2015 saw an estimated US$34 billion worldwide being raised by crowdfunding.
In this post Iâll explain what crowdfunding is and how it works. Iâll also share five benefits of crowdfunding (only one is financial), and why you should consider it not just to raise capital, but also to grow your blogâand your business.
What is crowdfunding?
Crowdfunding is about raising capital for a project or venture upfront by receiving monetary contributions from a large number of people. The supporters pledgeâ their support for the campaign in exchange for a reward. Rewards can be a product or service, or just a public acknowledgement.
How does crowdfunding work?
To set up a crowdfunding campaign, you share the story of your project and where youâll invest the funds into an online crowdfunding platform such as Kickstarter, Pozible, Chuffed or Indiegogo.
You then specify different tangible rewards different amounts of monetary pledges.
There are two types of crowdfunding campaigns:
the âall or nothingâ campaign, where you receive the funds only if you reach your campaign target
the âreceive everythingâ campaign, where you receive all funds whether or not you reach the target.
Naturally, there are advantages and disadvantages for each one.
The platform will prompt you to specify a period for the crowdfunding campaign. And once you hit publish, youâre on your way.
Despite what many people think, running a crowdfunding campaign isnât a âset and forgetâ exercise. You need to drive as much traffic as you can to your campaign to make sure you trend high on the platform and receive the financial pledges you need.
Sharing your campaign on social media as well as traditional media, email marketing and other methods will all increase the chances of your campaign reaching (or even exceeding) your target.
What are the benefits of crowdfunding?
You may be put off crowdfunding by the amount time and effort needed, or the fact itâs all so open and public. But before you choose a more traditional form of finance I encourage you to reconsider, as the benefits of crowdfunding go way beyond the financial reward.
Here are some more benefits of crowdfunding.
Raised Profile/Media Exposure. Due to the high traffic volume crowdfunding platforms receive, and the likelihood of friends and supporters sharing your campaign in social media, crowdfunding is one of the best ways to increase exposure and boost your visibility.Following my two successful crowdfunding campaigns, my story was picked up by online and traditional media keen for a âgood newsâ story. My social media and email followers also grew considerably during and after the campaign.
Market Research. Not sure your idea will fly? Crowdfunding will quickly give you the answer. While many people fear a failed crowdfunding campaign, the astute blogger/business owner knows itâs better than investing thousands of dollars (and just as many hours) on a business or project only to have it fail. A successful campaign gives you the confidence that thereâs a market for your product or service before you create it.
Loyal Customers. The people who pledge money will become your most loyal customers. Theyâve personally invested in your idea, and want you to grow and succeed. Thereâs no better feeling than giving these customers their rewards to thanks them for their support.
No interest or ongoing fees. Unlike traditional business lending, once you hit your target, and the platform and transaction fees have been deducted, thatâs it. There are no ongoing fees, and definitely no interest rates.
Accountability. Thereâs no better motivation to keep your project on track than having a large group of customers waiting for a product or service theyâve already paid for. In my experience, a successful crowdfunding campaign is the perfect way to get public accountability and push you to deliver what youâve promised.
How soon after the campaign do you get your money?
In an âall or nothingâ campaign, pledges are processed as soon as the target is reached.
If the supporter has paid by PayPal, youâll receive individual transactions directly into your PayPal account once you reach this milestone. Credit card payments are usually processed at the end of the campaign, and transferred into your bank account within 7-10 days.
Crowdfunding platforms usually take around 5% of the campaign total in fees, and payment gateways can take another 3% in exchange for the services provided. Keep these fees in mind when setting your target. You donât want to shortchange yourself.Â
Five tips to help your crowdfunding campaign hit its target
Around 70% of crowdfunding campaigns fail to reach their target. And the biggest cause of those failures is lack of preparation. So you need to do your research before you launch the campaign, because once youâve hit the launch button itâs too late to make improvements or compensate for your lack of preparation.
Hereâs some of my best tips to help your campaign succeed:
Make it about the cause. A lot of crowdfunding campaigns fail because the creator makes it about them rather than the cause. And people love getting behind a cause.
Employ the âNo pledger left behindâ philosophy. Make every pledger feel valued and appreciated. If you do, theyâll be inspired to share your campaign even more. List and tag (where possible) every pledger in social media, and provide regular updates to keep your pledgers in the loop.
Stay in the game. So many campaigns fail because the campaign creator gives up before the campaign is over. In many cases, the bulk of support comes in during the last few hours, and sometimes even the last few minutes.
Choose âall or nothingâ. Itâs a big leap of faith to choose the âall or nothingâ campaign. But statistics show youâll be more likely to hit your target. Maybe your supporters donât want to see you fail. Maybe they really want their rewards, or would hate to see the money raised go to waste. But whatever the reason, it definitely increases your chances of success. This is in contrast to âreceive everythingâ campaigns, where youâre basically telling pledgers youâll be happy with whatever you can get. Thereâs no urgency in these campaigns, and so people donât feel the need to get behind them.
Have a Traffic Strategy. While angel investors are out there, the reality is that nine out of ten pledges typically come from traffic you send to your campaign. So It pays to have a traffic strategy in place before you launch. As well as regular blog posts and email marketing before and during the campaign, you should also include guest blogging, traditional PR and paid online advertising in your crowdfunding toolkit.
Final thoughts
Crowdfunding via your blog has more benefits than just raising money.
A successful campaign will make you confident thereâs a market for your product or service before you create it. Better still, youâll have group of passionate supporters who believe in your vision and will cheer you along every step of the way.
