Well, we know that once a year they have to mentor tributes and schmooze sponsors for the Games.

It's a pretty big event and seems to be the only type of 'sport' Panem has, so I imagine that for at least 3-6 months of the year a lot of their time will be devoted to that - analysing tactics, coordinating with stylists, contacting sponsors and so on. Gifts are expensive in the Games so they'd start early to encourage Capitolites to save up and pick their team.

Then there's the prostitution, of course. This is likely Snow's big moneymaker and helps grease political wheels via blackmail/bribes.

Beyond that, I'd think their life is pretty similar to an Instagram model's - go to important events with important people, wear the latest brands, be on camera casually saying 'there's nothing like the cool refreshing taste of Panem-Cola(tm)!'

The Careers train potential tributes at the academies and the more charismatic Victors are hosts for reality tv or talk shows. All of them do propaganda films about how amazing life is as a Victor and how grateful they were for the opportunity to represent their district etc etc.

The point is to keep them working and in the public eye, where they're too busy and alienated from their home districts to be able to even think about a rebellion never mind organise one.

(This is something I found so odd about D12's victors. Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta are all proven rebellious pain in the butts and Snow just left them together. Practically unsupervised. For almost a year??? In a super remote district with a minimal government presence????? KP I can forgive, they're babies. BUT HAYMITCH?????)

Hi! I have been following you for a long time…since the Glee fandom woah. I just wanted to say that I have always admired you and the way you engage with fandom. You have so much talent in writing but also manage to be so down to earth and kind. I really worry sometimes if my muses sound too much the same, especially in their internal dialogues. But I find the devil's in the details with like... their respective habits, and how I know they'd react to x, y, or z, and just little tics they each might have; those things really help keeping track.

One of my absolute favorite things about RP and writing in general is just being able to share all those little details and extrapolate and fill things in! And I certainly get inspired by my rp partners pretty frequently. Even if it's just writing a thing on my own, writing is very much an external hobby as it is internal, I think--at least for me. People, things, places, other media, all go into the pot. And my characters wouldn't be what they are without all the RP partners I've written with in the past, and am writing with now. <3 <3 <3

The most joyous thing is to have someone just... ask me headcanon questions, or questions in general, about my characters.

Everything you've said is true.

However I doubt Anya would be willing to let Roy perform his favourite sex act quite as often as he would want to do it... whereas Crystal is always ready willing and able!

Roy doesn't visit Crystal just for the sex, though. He also likes the thrill, the tingling feeling that he is engaging in an activity that is a bit risky and naughty. We also know that Roy is something of a hedonist, and with that in mind he'll pursue as much sex as he can get. And he'll never admit it, because it would blow his entire argument about there being no emotional attachment out of the water, but he genuinely enjoys Crystal's company.

Thank you, Nonners! Especially for you, I present "The Coffee Bean" (known among the students as "The Bean"), the most relaxed place to hang out on campus. Since it's part of the current chapter, I thought I could squeeze this in while the update runs. 😉

The Coffee Bean (Coffee house)

Featuring in the current chapter of "A Taste Of Honey" is this campus coffee house I built ages ago. It was one of the first things I knew I wanted the campus to have. I took a lot of inspiration from Friends and Central Perk, because the thing I always loved about that place is how relaxed and homely it looked.

At "The Bean", there are places to just chill, have a coffee and a chat, but many students also come here to work on a paper or other assignment. There's a tiny stage where aspiring young performers can show their skills.

(Answering this fashionably late bc I'm a terrible person) Hey anon!

First up, how does everyone know her birthday? Was it in the books and I just completely blanked it? It's cute that it's in spring, since that's also when she goes through her 'rebirth' from a scared starving child to Katniss Everdeen, District Hunter.

She's an extremely well written character. The way her grief and the following trauma impacts her and haunts her throughout the series is horribly accurate. It was almost too much when I first read it (self reflection is rarely pleasant) but what makes her so inspiring is how even at her worst she still finds ways to keep going.

For all she's described as the Girl on Fire, to me she seems more like the embodiment of nature. Forests can be burned, rivers can be dammed, and the meadows paved over. But new shoots grow from soil enriched by ashes. The rivers burst their banks in the spring melts and carve new paths in the stone. Roots break the pavement and grass reclaims the earth. It's only a matter of time.

People's strengths and weaknesses aren't really something you can separate; eg. she's very impulsive and tends to leap without looking, which makes for an excellent protagonist and both kickstarts a revolution and puts her and everyone she loves in danger. She's also extremely stubborn - this lends itself to her persistence and refusal to give in, but also prevents her asking for help when she needs it.

Re: casting, the neat thing about her is that she's written to be purposefully racially ambiguous beyond 'mixed race' due to how far ahead in the future Panem is and everyone kinda blending together (as a halfsies, I'm a big fan of it). That said there's a lot that points to her being Native American and that's how I choose to draw her, so someone in line with that would be awesome.

It’s been years since Charles cried. He hates the powerlessness of it, hates the burn in his eyes, hates the mucus that fills up his nose. Hates the humiliation of being useless and weak and reduced to it by a man he could knock to the ground in three seconds flat if he weren’t so stupid about this. Edwin’s hand touches his shoulder and Charles flinches away on instinct, disgusted by the whimper that comes out of his mouth and unable to stop it at the same time.

“Charles,” Edwin breathes out, stepping closer, “please talk to me. I don’t understand what is happening—”

. The comment on his height received an appropriately disparaging look, sharp eyes watching the other with disdain. But Daud otherwise paid it no heed, focused on the new question laid before him. Who would the Abbey want killed that they could not murder themselves? Was it a personal grudge, a tiff between Abbey members? Maybe it was just one poor bastard that had wronged this particular zealot. Perhaps the Abbey had finally taken to removing political opponents now, such that they needed a professional hand and not just the drunken swinging of their footsoldiers. The assassin didn't hear music, so he would entertain the man for a short while. Though, he left the Overseer in dragging silence for a long moment. Regardless of if he was going to take the job, his curiosity had been piqued for better or worse.

. "30 seconds," he said by way of reply. And then, "if I don't find your job interesting, I'll take a finger as payment for wasting my time."

And with respect to your second question... yes!! (I thought of this ask when I wrote the author's note for Chapter 10. <3) only as strong as the warrior next to you was never intended to be the last installment in "the ignorant and the weak" series; I'd always contemplated having at least 1-2 additional installments, assuming I actually made it that far.

After Caro (GRACIOUSLY AND THANKFULLY) offered to beta read, the story got better and the chances of actually finishing it got stronger. When we did a full collab together in the form of bright centers of the universe, in orbit in a fit of utter fury after fandom wank bullshit and we realized how much FUN it was to write together that way, and made the decision that future installments would be co-created.

Our intention, barring any unexpected developments, is to take a break, write a few one-shots from different perspectives, then try to tackle Din POV part 3. We also want to take some time to focus on our own and different projects, including (on my end) original work and maybe a few non-ignorant and the weak Star Wars fic while we're at it. 👀🙏

The addition of new canon in form of Season 3 will, I think, be the unpredictable factor -- new canon always poses the risk that some element will be introduced or some fandom wank occurs that impacts the fannish desire to create in ways that aren't anticipated. (No spoilers for Season 3 of Mandalorian, please!!!!) As always, real life impacts will be a factor also. But that's what we're shooting for, and I'm really excited to get started (including finally being able to watch ANDOR 😍🙏 for the first time!!!!) once we've had a chance to rest up and decompress a bit.

What's your ultimate self indulgent smiling man fantasy?

'Nonners. I love this question, thank you for it, I am totally here for any indulgence of my smiling man obsession.

I don't have a singular ultimate fantasy as I cycle through very similar ones regularly enough, so let me be very very self-indulgent and go into all of them.

Behind a read more because it might be a lot.

So my smiling man daydream fantasies tend to have a few distinct categories.

Folksy/grounded -- where whoever I'm imagining myself to be has made a bargain with the smiling man, similar to the bargain than Jonathan Webster made ,and very often they're in historical settings. Sometimes it's people making a bargain for something earnest, like wanting to have children or paying off some massive debt they can't see a way out of or wanting to get out of being married off to someone (usually these tie into the issues of being a historical woman--wanting to escape a fate); sometimes it's more greedy and selfish, like someone wanting to be a famous artist but wanting that instant magic fix to be famous.

These always end with the character in question being taken behind the mist and used up, after the smiling man is ready to take them.

Servant - where whoever I'm imagining myself to be makes a bargain with the smiling man but becomes his servant in the 'sunshine world' as part of the deal. Usually these characters tend to be desperate but yearning for something that isn't a necessity, like fame--quite often they want to be stage performers because then I can daydream with my music playing and have it be relevant, lol.

Sometimes the servant character falls in love/gets engaged and the smiling man gets mad about it because the character belongs to him, and they didn't even think about that before trying to promise themselves to someone else. He doesn't view it in a "I love them" way, just, "Uhhh you're my belonging, I own you, what makes you think you can just up and devote your soul to someone?"

For supreme self indulgence with this daydream, I turn to "All I Ask Of You" from Phantom of the Opera, where the character and her fiance write a song where my character is alluding to their servitude to the smiling man and all the horror that entails ("All I want is freedom/ a world with no more night/And you, always beside me/To hold me and to hide me") while the fiance is probably just thinking they have lots of personal problems.

And of course, the smiling man gets wind of this song, and is not very impressed and will be having A Talk with the character.

These don't really have endings, they sometimes spin off into other vaguely musical moments, often with "Pure as the Driven Snow" from the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the official Rachel Zegler version of the song, anyway).

Adults with supernatural or smiling man adjacent histories for these Daydreams, it involves a character who has a background with the smiling man in some way or who has a traumatic event that connects them to supernatural or otherworldly things.

Sometimes it's a character who encountered the smiling man and made a bargain as a child, and now they're an adult and he's coming to collect. I often have him show up looking like someone else and fucking with them, because he finds it entertaining.

Sometimes it's someone who saw a ghost or was involved in another supernatural entities shenanigans (sometimes I decide the Other Mother from Coraline was involved, or a creature like her) but as an adult they have the misfortunate to come across the smiling man, who overhears their history and decides they'd make a great way to help keep the doorway to the other side of the mist open.

One in particular I always return to is someone who returns as an adult to this summer camp style experience where the kids lodge in this large building that used to be an old mansion but was refurbished into a summer camp spot with offices, dorm rooms, etc.

As a kid, they were haunted here by this creepy lady ghost who wanted to take them and have them be their "daughter" (because their own daughter died due to their negligence). And when they come back as an adult to be a counselor or chaperone... well, they end up coming back the summer that the smiling man happens to be there looking for new souls to collect.

And the lady ghost offers to help trap all the kids at the camp if he just makes sure she gets to keep the returned character forever and ever.

Folklore - I would say this is probably the most self indulgent of them. In this type of Daydream, the character is someone who is really into folklore beliefs, believing in old traditions like house spirits and witchcraft, who leaves out buttermilk for a house spirit that lives in the wood shed and makes protective bundles every year to hang up around the house that will ward off bad spirits. Who goes into the woods to gather herbs.

For this, I usually imagine the character was taught by their grandmother or something like that. A grandmother who taught them about fairies in the woods, who told them to sweep out bad energy with a broom during changing of the seasons, and who (to steal from Addie LaRue) said to never ask things of any spirit who comes after dark.

And they often have a sibling who doesn't believe in the things the grandma told them and who teases the character about it. Like, the character smacks the sibling's hand because they try to take baked goods that they're going to leave in the forest as an offering, or they try to use buttermilk being collected for the house spirit to make pancakes. And their sibling is just like, 'Ohhh boy, here we go again."

It's lighthearted teasing from the sibling. Mostly just because that allows the smiling man to overhear what the character believes in and have it feel organic.

All of this usually leads to the smiling man deciding that this character could be an interesting way to keep the door(s) to the other side of the mist open. Sometimes I have the smiling man encounter the house spirit, who threatens him to leave the character alone, as she's the only one who still feeds him and believes in him.

(The character does usually have a niece or nephew that she teaches these things too, so trying to keep her grandmother's traditions alive.)

I never really have concrete endings for these types of saydreams as they kind of go back and forth depending on my mood. Sometimes I have the smiling man encounter the character in the woods and nothing much happens, other times he tries to make a bargain and she is smart enough to realize that it's a bad idea.

Often they have conversations about things that she believes in, because he's always interested in people who still believe in the old things that have been overridden by technology and science.
