Question about your a/b/o-verse!

I see the term "carrier" and "parent" be used a lot rather to more usual gendered terms like mother and father (I don't remember if Bruce or Alfred commonly refer to his parents as his mother and father).

Do pup still refer to the parent that carried them during pregnancy as mother/mom and to the other one as father/dad, despite their primary gender? I often see that in a/b/o, like the pregnant parent is referring to themselves as mom no matter if they are a man/woman/other and was wondering about that!

TBH I'm quite curious because I've never read man/woman a/b/o stuffs and I wonder if there was a female alpha with a male omega (him carrying the pups), would he be referred as mom, directly challenging the norms of our society... Anyway! Food for thoughts <3

Hi friend! I'm doing okay. Just trying to get through the week, you know?

My goal in writing this fic specifically was to avoid ever having to call Bruce "mom" just because he's an omega with pups. I really like the gender neutral "carrier" and even "sire" (though I wish there was a better word) since it allows for multiple genders and designations to mix and choose the term that best fits for them.

Since Martha and Thomas were both cisgender, I imagine Bruce might have called them mother and father if he wanted. But he would most definitely call them carrier/sire as a default.

One thing I have done differently which I'm still unsure about is having "carrier" not just as a biological term, but as a gender neutral parenting term in general. I.e., Bruce might not have carried Jason to term, but he is Jason's carrier? Jason doesn't call him mom or dad. But he (and if not him, then other people) refer to Bruce as Jason's carrier frequently.

I suppose it all comes down to personal preference. Since Bruce spent so long repressing his dynamic, I don't think he really relishes being called mom. But Lex clearly disagrees and occasionally uses gendered language, usually just to irk Bruce. He also calls himself "Uncle Lex" despite being omega.

It's all a very interesting hodgepodge of our gender norms, in-universe a/b/o tropes, and the a/b/o tropes I've chosen to subvert with my own interpretations.

And, of course, it all depends on how the in-universe trends are going, as we've discussed on here. Are newer generations more or less comfortable with older pack dynamics/instincts? Are they trying to move to a more nuclear family ("mom" and "dad") and away from same-designation couples? Same gender couples?

I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

After a quick stop by the barracks to deposit Crosshair’s armor and rifle, offer exactly no help in Hunter’s regulations-navigating, and pause just long enough for Crosshair to groan at his hand-wringing and point at the corner of the wall between Wrecker’s bunk and Hunter’s and snap, “There, and there,” gesturing between two gear hooks, “just sling up a damn hammock.”

Hunter turns a slow look on him while Crosshair pays no attention, sliding his rifle case into its usual spot. “You want our new, long-term prisoner-of-war squad-mate to sleep in a hammock?”

“I think it’s adorable you don’t realize the rest of us will be fighting over the hammock but sure, yeah, the lumbar support, silly me.”

ooh hmm. Baking and gardening. Puzzles and painting, if by painting you mean paint-by-numbers. Playing rummikub. Watching formulaic HGTV shows. Yelling at my cats. Pretending I know how to play tennis. Oohing and Aahing at Christmas lights this time of year.

10. When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? (or just felt really good afterwards)

honestly, i think there are more recent things but the first thing that came to mind is when @brenayla and i were talking on discord about fire prep/safety and @xf-cases-solved commented "this is like witnessing two opposite ways of witnessing a natural disaster" and i had this mental image of me running around in circles on a stage while bren stood there all calm and relaxed and the rest of the server was watching and worrying for our sanity

11. Do you have a comfort item? Tell us about it!

i have several pieces of comfort jewelry! although what came to mind for me was actually what i called my "emotional support wall" in my last apartment because there was a wall close enough that i could see it clearly while lying in bed crying (without contacts), so i put "may we all be so lucky..." on it and surrounded it with pictures of loved ones and a piece of art from my old supervisor's office that she gave me when I left that I used to stare at when I was emotional and trying not to look at her 😂 i'll put a picture under the cut <3 and a quilt from my traineeship! there were quilts decorating the walls and when i left, the doctor on our team let me choose a quilt to take with me <3

13. Bath or shower to relax?

shower by default, i guess, i've never really taken baths

i'm excited to post my valentine's fic/gifset! <3

37: Is it easier to forgive or forget? oof, rough one. My first answer was that forgetting is easier, because I tend to just move past little things in relationships to keep going. But then I thought, is that forgetting? Of is it forgiving all the little things until I can't anymore? I think for small things I forgive, for big things (in the realm of csa) I clearly forgot. For big-but-not-that-big I think I'm at a point where I can't do either anymore. It makes me sick. Things have to be talked about, and then I can forgive (but not everything, I don't even want to consider forgiving my parents right now)

52: Do you believe everything happens for a reason? no, life is just unfair. (and I feel weird for this short answer but honestly I think I don't have anything else to add to it)

Oooooh. I mean, probably my longfic just for sheer length. 

But for writing itself… either Summons, which is the one I’m posting now, or the sequel to the pornstar AU that I’m still working on. (no, i technically didnt post it this year. shhhh)

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

OH dear god let’s see. 14? I think? The Ordeal that ate up most of my 2024 forced me to put most of the rest of my life aside, but I’ve got a ton of stuff in the works that I intend to finish. Eventually.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

Nothing! I need space in my brain, especially when I’m editing (which usually happens as I write.... probably not best for my efficiency lol but I'm an overthinker at heart). But when I want to just put a ton of words down without thinking twice, I’ll put on fast-paced music: either Hole or the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack. 

TBH my preferred soundtrack is the ambient noise of being around other people (who of course cannot see my computer screen). I think this is part of why I love sprinting with others even virtually, body doubling really helps me focus.

When I was 18 I was so overconfident about where I wanted to go to college for music education that I literally only applied to one school. I ended up being stuck with going there and fell into a major, a career, friendships, and a marriage that I never would have had if I'd been sensible and thought to keep my options open before I bombed my audition for the school of music.

#8. Who's the early bird and who likes to sleep in longer?

As you might expect, for the Hawk and Thrush birdies.

Whenever Talanah can seize the opportunity to sleep in, she is absolutely the late riser. Aloy's chronically awake at dawn, I feel. At first she jokes about it with Talanah, poking a little impatient fun--"I thought the Carja were supposed to rise with the Sun or something." But eventually she grows to enjoy the quiet time, getting to lie in bed and watch Talanah snooze until the restlessness sets in and she has to get up and do something active.

This song is pretty night-focused and melancholy (They say the night is scary, to me the night is calm // I wish that I was scared, then I might go home) so I'm thinking a pre-during-post AOS character study that tracks Jim's inability to sleep.

When he's younger, he can't sleep at home at all because of Frank. Then as a teenager post-Tarsus (because I'm firmly a Tarsus-in-AOS-truther) he can't sleep because of All That. Then he gets to the Academy, where's he's finally safe, but now he's not sleeping because he's too busy catching up to and then surpassing his peers who had more rigorous schooling growing up. Then after Nero he can't sleep because of survivor's guilt and thinking that if he had been better/faster/smarter he could have saved more people on Vulcan or the cadet corps who died there.

One night, wandering the ship or Academy campus after everyone else is asleep, he discovers that Spock can't sleep either, in the aftermath of Vulcan and discovering the role that he's supposed to play in the future. They start spending their nights together just so they're not alone, but then they discover that around each other is the only place they each feel safe enough to fall asleep.

I thought you two got along?” Javy’s genuine and caring look as he turns from his place in the passenger seat almost makes him spill his guts. But he holds back, knowing that if his friend knew the real reason he doesn’t want to stay with Bob, not only would he cancel the trip where he’s going to propose to his girlfriend, but he’d also try to find a way to drop out of the Navy so he wouldn’t have to go to the training. So he evades. “We do get along. I just don’t want to bother him. He retired from the Navy, and now he’s going to have to deal with all of that crap again when it comes time for my physical therapy and all of that.” “Jake, that’s sweet of you, but when he heard that you needed a place and a helping hand while we’re gone, he volunteered his place. If he didn’t want to deal with “all of that,” he wouldn’t have offered.” Natasha’s matter-of-fact tone makes his heart stop. I didn’t know he offered. “I didn’t know he offered.”
