Just started watching suits recently and was wondering if you had any good fic recs, particularly AUs. The nature of the show really lends itself to Selkie fics imo but also I just love selkies

anon i need you to know that as soon as i saw your ask i immediately went scouring through the AU tag on ao3. i’m not gonna lie, i'm not usually an AU reader but i wanted to challenge myself to provide some recs as unbiasedly as possible.

at first observation, i noticed a lot of the AU fics were still in some way canon (divergent and adjacent)-- usually splitting off somewhere along the show or a situation where Mike or Harvey is still a lawyer, while the other was not. i will say i skipped over smut-based (omegaverse, bdsm) and lengthy fics (under 20k is nothing, anything more than 50k is pushing it for me) cause i just did not have the brainpower to even try to get through them :/

so of course the ones i ended up liking were mostly canon divergent/adjacent but i tried my best to get you something different. what i managed to dig up for you is under the cut and i really hope you like them anon (also fyi these are all pretty much marvey fics, hope that's okay!) <3 also thanks so much for the ask! i enjoyed this little scavenger hunt haha!

SO, with that said: this is not a complete list, but rather a starting point. I will add to this post as I am able, and expand the rec list so that more obikin authors can get the kudos and recognition they so deserve. Without further ado, here are the authors and fics I want to recommend to start.

✨MisanthropyMuse (@complementaryhalves) writes some terrific Obikin. For a great standalone fic, check out promises, promises. ✨BrynneAgain (@brynne-again) was an LJ writer back in the Old Days of Obikin, and has posted a few of her works to AO3. I really enjoy her Series of Short Fics. ✨Dreaminghour (@dreaminghour) has so many lovely fics—and she’s especially good at capturing a complete story in a shorter format. One of my absolute favorites of hers is Three Kisses. ✨Boonki (@boonki) has a fic called i witness heaven in unholy time that is beautiful, but will absolutely rip your heart out—be warned. She also has some less angsty Obikin stuff! ✨Zaecula (@zaecula) has some delightful obikin fics. If you’re up for some second person and some angst (fair warning, heed the tags, Anakin is still married to Padmé in this one), I definitely recommend Touched. ✨Wernnaa (@wernnaa) has a fantastic in-progress fic called Recoil and Ricochet. If you have any interest in mob AUs, this is a great one, and has a wonderful mix of plot and action.

Hey hey. I saw your post about needing a wfa despite it's ooc writing so I thought I'd suggest (or talk about) a non-ooc alternative :) Have you watched The Batman (2004) seasons 3-5 or read it's comic The Batman Strikes!? In my opinion, this show is THE BEST non-comic Batman adaptation.

It's adorable and cute and funny while really capturing the essence of each characters. And it never needed to flanderize its characters to be enjoyable.

I've only ever seen clips of Batman 2004 out of context before, but it's been on my list forever. Thank you for reminding me about it, though, 'cause I definitely need more quality Bruce content.

And, wow, I had no idea there was a tie-in comic! I'll definitely have to give this a read ASAP.

Mind if I ask why only S3-5, though? Just out of curiosity 'cause skipping two whole seasons has me a little intrigued as to the quality of the show XD

found this poem called ‘the poem climbs the scaffold and tells you what it sees’ by natasha oladokun in a batjokes fic a while ago and was never able to shake the immense bruce energy of it.. thought you might get a kick out of it :)

Yes, you thought right, if the kick is in the heart and the result is pain and suffering. And the whole thing is beautiful, but the last part:

It really makes me think of the self-hating side of being Batman and how, to Bruce, it's part-punishment and part-self-destruction and part-atonement, for surviving something that his parents didn't. Every night Batman ("decked in black from scalp to heel/ scythe in hand ready and eager to meet yourself/ pounding at your own door") goes out to fight the evil that took his family and challenging it to take him too, but Gotham keeps spitting him back out, again and again. So Bruce survives himself just as much as he survives Gotham. Enough of him to feel alone, to yearn for other things, and that's what being Batman can't kill-- the animal in the poem truly depends on perspective. It could either be Bruce talking about Batman, or Batman talking about Bruce.

And then the road is too steep for him to see that there's light beyond it. That things could be different. So he keeps doing it.

did you ever watch fargo? it has similar story beats to true detective, at least, season one (it’s another anthology type series, crime focused) there’s a dude in there who i think you’d get a kick out out of… very much quietly intensely batshit insane and Off™️ but somehow presents himself as the sanest one in the room. he’s rust cohle, in a way, but murderer, not detective

Thanks for the rec! Watched S1 over the past week or so. Was good but it frustrated me. Billy Bob Thornton Serial Killer was the highlight, you were right! He was very fun. What a weirdo.

I don't know if it was that I grew up in an area with accents like theirs so I was like, hyper aware They Are Doing An Accent, or that it was based on Coen Brother's work, but a lot of the characters felt... rather like caricatures? I don't know, something about it had a wall between me and it, where I wasn't immersed so they felt like We Are Actors On A Set Delivering Lines Really Well rather than I was in the moment, if that makes any sense. Maybe it was the monologues, Flannigan series can have the same affect to me.

Still, was a really good cast. I needed Martin Freeman to get his comeuppence like three episodes sooner, my god that man could just wiggle out of everything (SPOILER he sent his wife to get shot???? what the fuck is wrong with him. I was screaming SPOILER OVER). I always like it when Colin Hanks pops up in things. Allison Tolman and Billy Bob Thornton fucking carried the whole thing, they were the only two I didn't really get the I Am Delivering Lines With Emotion And This Thick Minnesotan Accent feeling.

Writing was generally tight, too. Good full circle moments and Chekov's guns, pieces came together in satisfying ways. Was fun to be rooting for Molly to catch her killers and for Billy Bob to fucking get Martin Freeman. I think it could have been one episode shorter, or skipped the time jump, to give the police a modicum more competence, they were killing me.

Idk if I'll watch the other seasons, I did enjoy it overall. Might check out the newest one because I'm a slut for Jon Hamm.
